▼ The purpose of this study was to reveal whether there is a relationship between students' volume of text messaging and formal writing performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test writing section. The study also examined gender as a contributing variable in this measure. As a supplementary correlation, student text message volume was also compared to their Writing I course final grade. The study focused solely on texting because texting has become the preferred method of telecommunication among teens and young adults (Lindley, 2008, p. 19). The design included a questionnaire that collected data to show whether any relationships exist that indicate a correlation between paired scores. The sample was taken from college freshmen who have completed the SAT writing test and who finished ENG100, 101, 101H, or equivalent freshman writing course during the fall 2011 semester. The results of the study showed a significant negative relationship between female students' average monthly text message volume and SAT writing scores.

▼ SMS text-messaging is an interoperable communication vehicle known to be dependable for mass media alert notifications in crisis management.
SMS text-messaging also offers potential as one viable two-way communication alternative for field responders in crisis response. Both continuously changing mobile information communication technologies and the importance of precise information exchange constitute a need for communication protocol training and practice. This study introduces a technology-mediated training technique based on speech act and communicative action theories. These theories are used to inform the design of a baseline measure for task performance improvement and to suggest a model to predict communication readiness. Because this research bridges two fields - information systems and communication - it provides a model for full construct-representation of text-based interaction in a technology-mediated environment. The proposed model is validated through a web-based training application with
50 participants who have different crisis response backgrounds, including emergency management practitioners, first responders, public safety volunteers, community volunteers, community citizens, and students over the age of 18. Each group encompasses diverse technological skill and usage levels.
The web-based training application developed in the present study features plain language training so that a clear understanding of user behavior, response, and training would emerge. The training and crisis scenario are rendered through multimedia recordings and designed to measure task response, based on the 160 character per
SMS text-message exchange limit. The mixed-methods design begins with a crisis scenario, followed by pre-training measures, three repeated training measures, and concludes with post-training measures. A total of six tasks are introduced (3 pre-training and 3 post-training) in which each participant interfaces with the web-based training application through a high-speed Internet connection. Task response level results show promise for this exploratory research and contribute to a new discourse mode that extends to mobile technology penetration. Future research will focus on refinement of the model's task performance measures and will seek to introduce additional situation-based scenarios and mixed-modes of communication. During this next research phase, the objective is to incorporate the model into mobile device usage and operationalize the model in authentic crisis management contexts. If successful in extended field simulation, the model may have the potential to ensure effective mobile information communication within the context of crisis.

▼ Self–regulation in writing is viewed as critically important in order to be a good writer. With the
advent of cellular telephony, what passes as ‘good’ writing is being challenged with the
introduction of the abbreviated form of SMS (Short Messaging Service) language. The
purpose of this study was to determine the nature of the changes in SMS spelling and
whether or not these changes affected the participants’ spelling age and their ability to write
formally within the context of a formal SMS and the English language class. This study also
aimed to determine whether a relationship exists between self–regulatory skills and writing in
SMS.
A sequential explanatory mixed–method research design was selected in order to address
the research questions which had been posed. The study examined the nature of Short
Messaging Service (SMS) language and the relationship between self–regulation and SMS,
using a dominant quantitative survey design which was followed by a qualitative phase which
explored and explained the phenomena which had been exposed in the quantitative phase of
this study.
The results of this study indicated that SMS language is an abbreviated form of digital
writing, which is colloquial and informal in nature. SMS language is used in SMS text
messages and within the forum of the chatroom MXit. The results also indicated that the
participants in this study use the self–regulatory strategies of goal setting, strategic planning,
self–recording, self–evaluation and self–reaction when writing SMS text messages that are
more formal in nature. Furthermore, no evidence of SMS language could be found in an
analysis of writing portfolios, indicating that SMS language does not affect the academic
writing skills of the participants in this study.
The main conclusion was that although this study was completed on a very small scale and
that it would be inappropriate to generalise, the implementation of and research regarding
the nature of SMS and self–regulation in SMS writing, require attention in order to ensure that
the self–regulatory skills possessed by learners in our schools are used optimally in order to
promote literacy and good writing practices.

Since the beginning of the XXIst century, the SMS practice questions the use of traditional linguistics norms in daily writings. According to the history of writing, its rapid growth as a prefered practice in interpersonal communication refers to questions about the dissemination of any emergent practice: how people use-it? In which way does a support such as a mobile phone influence the way of spelling? Could the writings depend on the age, gender, place of residency, education level or experience of SMS? Does SMS writing have homogeneous characteristics? Is-it related to the oral language? Can it be the cradle of the evolutions of written language? By manual analysis of linguistic of more than 10,000 authentic SMS in French, from corpora collected in Belgium, Reunion Island, Switzerland, Quebec and southern France, this study shows that SMS writing is aimed at personal appropriation of the graphic code, without orthographic standard systematically suffering. It shows that SMS writing reveals everyone’s identity, in terms of their relationship to writing and ability to adapt the discourse. This research also indicates that SMS writing can sometimes present caracteristics that account for the existence of a strong link between graphic code and cognitive oralisation of a message.

SMS (Short Message Servicing) encourage the emergence of new writing forms and provides the opportunity to study in an original way the general processes of written production. The study of these processes allowed the highlighting of cognitive load that they represent during their simultaneous implementation. However, if these issues have been widely studied in conventional written production, appearance over the new forms of writing provide an opportunity to study spelling in a new way. One of the main characteristics of SMS writing (eSMS) is the use of unconventional orthographic forms (e.g., Slt pk tu menvoi ce mess? Biz [Hi why r u sending me this txt? Kisses]) which may seem, at first, simpler and easier than the conventional writing. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate a cognitive load of producing specific processes of SMS writing (eSMS) for novices and their automation with the acquisition of expertise. In the context of a writing test of SMSes, we varied on the one hand the level of expertise of the participants in the use of SMS writing and, secondly, the attention they could bring to this task through a variety of changes in the experimental dual task paradigm. The results of various experimental studies support the conclusion that the production of eSMS specific processes has a cognitive load, like those of conventional writing.…
