En Tunisie, dans le contexte du changement climatique attendu, les résultats de plusieurs études réalisées ont montré que : Dans les prochaines décennies (aux horizons 2030 et 2050), les villes tunisiennes seront menacées par la multiplicité des phénomènes extrêmes (y compris les phénomènes des inondations). Notre choix est focalisé sur l’étude des principales villes de la Tunisie centrale, en particulier Kairouan et Sidi Bouzid, qui ont connu au cours de l’histoire récente des phénomènes hydroclimatiques extrêmes. Ces derniers, ont provoqué souvent des conséquences graves sur l’économie, la population, les infrastructures de base… Mais l’ensemble des aménagements hydrauliques qui ont été construits suite à la catastrophe de 1969 (Les barrages, les digues …) ont donné à la population un sentiment de confiance, si bien qu’au cours des dernières décennies ces deux villes ont connu une extension urbaine sans précédent y compris dans des secteurs déjà inondés en 1969. La question qui se pose est la suivante : Ces aménagements seraient-ils suffisamment efficaces pour protéger ces deux villes en cas d'épisodes pluviométriques exceptionnels semblables à celui de l’automne 1969 ? En effet, l’objectif ultime de ce projet est de répondre à cette question ainsi que: * Présenter les facteurs naturels du ruissellement et de l’écoulement dans les villes de Kairouan et de Sidi Bouzid. * Déterminer les mécanismes générateurs des précipitations diluviennes ainsi que les facteurs qui sont à l’origine de leur variation spatiale et temporelle. * Etudier l’occupation des sols et son impact sur le ruissellement et l’écoulement. * Et surtout, réaliser une carte de risque inondation, afin d’orienter les décideurs vers le bon choix des aménagements qui serviront à minimiser les dégâts de ce risque.

In the context of the expected climate change, the results of several studies showed that: In the coming decades (the horizons of 2030 and 2050), Tunisian cities will be threatened by the large number of extreme events (including the phenomena of floods). Our choice is focused on the study of the main cities of central Tunisia, in particular Kairouan and Sidi Bouzid, which saw in the recent history of extreme hydro-climatic phenomena. These have often caused serious consequences on the economy, population, basic infrastructure... But all the water projects that were built after the disaster of 1969 (dams, dikes ...) have given the people a sense of confidence, so that in recent decades the two cities experienced unprecedented urban extension including in already flooded areas in 1969. The question is: These arrangements would they be sufficiently effective to protect these two cities in case of exceptional rainfall episodes similar to that of autumn 1969? Indeed, the ultimate aim of this project is to answer this question and: * Present natural factors of runoff and flow in the cities of Kairouan and Sidi Bouzid. * Determine the mechanisms generating torrential rainfall and the factors which are responsible for spatial and temporal variation. *…

Cette recherche s’élabore depuis un travail de terrain mené avec les artistes du spectacle Fractus V (Cie Eastman / choré. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui) entre juin 2015 et mai 2018. Au fil du récit de cette traversée, de Barcelone à Anvers puis sur les routes d’Europe, une réflexion s’articule progressivement autour de l’interrogation suivante : dans quelle mesure le processus de création et la tournée du spectacle constituent-ils des expériences régénératrices pour les interprètes qui s’y engagent ? Rite de passage à bien des titres, Fractus V repose sur un désir de renouvellement et d’entre’fertilisation (« cross-fertilization ») partagé par neuf interprètes de cultures chorégraphiques et musicales différentes : les danseurs Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Dimitri Jourde, Johnny Lloyd, Fabian Thomé Duten et Patrick ‘Twoface’ Williams Seebacher ; les musiciens Soumik Datta, Kaspy N’Dia, Woojae Park et Shogo Yoshii. Leur modus operandi consiste d’abord en deux gestes : les interprètes s’apprennent les uns les autres des danses et s’essaient ensemble à des écritures collectives. Non sans difficultés, la compagnie naissante esquisse peu à peu les contours d’une micropolitique de création embrassant la nécessité de la fabrique d’un commun tout autant que l’inévitable processus de différenciation des interprètes entre eux. Comment les corps parviennent-ils à diffracter les apprentissages ? À faire « à leur manière » sans faire séparément ? À former une compagnie, voire un chœur polyphonique, plutôt qu’un assemblage d’altérités ? C’est à l’étude des pistes de réponse travaillées par les artistes, ainsi qu’à leurs évolutions dans le temps, que se dédie cette thèse. À cette fin, elle élabore une approche ethnographique, écologique et micropolitique des trajectoires et transformations des interprètes en mobilisant les anthropologies des lignes et des modes de Tim Ingold et de François Laplantine, les micropolitiques affectives de Brian Massumi et de Frédéric Lordon, la philosophie ontogénétique de Gilbert Simondon, ainsi que les études poïétiques en danse contemporaine. C’est aux côtés de cette assemblée d’artistes et de penseurs que se formule, au gré de récits et de réflexions théoriques, une pensée de la régénération comme principe d’une micropolitique écologique de l’être en devenir à l’œuvre au sein d’un processus de création chorégraphique collaboratif.

This research developed from fieldwork conducted with the performers of the choreographic worked entitled “Fractus V” by the Eastman/Sidi Larbi company between June 2015 and May 2018. The narrative that unfolds from this fieldwork between Barcelona and Antwerp and thereafter along many roads of Europe revolves around the following questions: To what extent does the choreographic process and the tour of the performance constitute regenerative experiences for the performers involved? How are rites of passage understood? “Fractus V” is motivated by a choreographer’s desire for a renewal and cross-fertilizations shared by nine performers of different choreographic and musical cultures.…

Mîla, est une ville d’Algérie, située dans le constantinois. Elle est construite sur la ville antique de Milev. Très peu d’études ont été consacrées à son développement urbain et architectural. Une partie de son potentiel a disparu au début de la colonisation française au XIXe siècle et au XXe siècle, suite à l’abandon de la ville par ses habitants. En se basant sur les sources écrites des voyageurs arabes, la documentation d’archives de la période coloniale jamais exploitée, les différents plans et projets réalisés lors de l’occupation de Mîla, les résultats de fouilles archéologiques et sur essentiellement un travail de terrain, cette étude propose une reconstitution urbaine, architecturale et archéologique de la ville durant la période ottomane ainsi qu’un inventaire des édifices religieux, militaires et domestiques. Leurs localisations topographiques, descriptions architecturales et reconstitutions spatiales sont également abordées. Ces données, toutes puisées de la réalité du terrain, sont systématiquement accompagnées d’un relevé architectural. Par ailleurs, en s’appuyant sur le processus de formation de Mîla à travers l’histoire et sur son premier plan cadastral inédit, cette étude propose l’analyse urbaine et morphologique de la ville. Cette analyse a permis la reconstitution de Mîla durant la période ottomane avec ses remparts, ses portes, ses quartiers, ses rues, ses places, ses souks et qaysarīyya, ses hammâms et bien entendu ses établissements religieux. D’autre part, cette étude propose une reconstitution de la Grande mosquée de Mîla « Sidi Ghanem » durant la période ottomane comme un dernier témoin de l’édifice avant ses multiples transformations

Mîla is a city of Algeria, located in the region of Constantine. It is built on the ancient city of Milev. Very few studies have been devoted to its urban and architectural development. Part of its potential disappeared at the beginning of the French colonization in the nineteenth century and twentieth century, following the abandonment of the city by its inhabitants. Based on the written sources of the Arab travelers, the archive documentation of the colonial period never exploited, the different plans and projects made during the occupation of Mîla, the results of archaeological excavations and essentially on a field work, this study proposes a urban, architectural and archaeological reconstruction of the city during the Ottoman period as well as an inventory of religious, military and domestic buildings. Their topographical locations, architectural descriptions and spatial reconstructions are also dealt with. These data, all drawn from the reality of the field, are systematically accompanied by an architectural survey. Moreover, based on Mîla's process of formation throughout history and on its first unpublished cadastral plan, this study proposes the urban and morphological analysis of the city. ▼ The research reported here involves a detailed investigation of primary particle size, aggregate size and morphology, primary particle nanostructure (fringe length and tortuosity), surface and bulk chemical composition of the soot generated from a spark-ignited, direct-injection (SIDI) engine at different operating conditions and compare the TEM results to an on road medium duty diesel engine which is of different size class. The comparison is not to find or demonstrate a statistically significant difference but to identify values indicative of differences observed via TEM. The SIDI engine used in this research is a fuel-neutral, single-cylinder, four-stroke research engine which is built into a Ricardo Hydra block. The engine is a 549 [cc] with a flat-top piston, fueled by Tier II EEE. Working in collaboration with GM and PNNL, a clean baseline engine operating condition was established and repeatability at this condition was ascertained. This baseline condition is specified as 2100 rpm, 350 kPa IMEP, 280 [°bTDC] end of injection (EOI), and 25 [°bTDC] ignition timing. Engine operational conditions included lean and rich conditions, a high-load case and an advanced ignition, each relative to a reference condition. Characterization techniques involved physical structure (microscopy) and chemistry (spectroscopy), both electron and optical based. Physical size and structure characterization that include aggregate size and morphology, primary particle size and internal nanostructure, were analyzed by TEM and subsequent image analyses. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) partial oxidation runs were conducted with intermediate study by HRTEM to estimate the degree of burnout for but one sample. Chemical characterization included organic and elemental content quantification as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), volumetric-averaged functional group identification by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy – Attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The TEM measurements showed that there is more primary particle size variation for SIDI samples. The aggregates formed for the conditions with lesser mixing appeared to be more compact with a higher level of tortuosity. Significantly FTIR provided a volumetric measure of the chemical composition as manifested by the functional groups. XPS showed that there are significant differences in composition between the five different engine-operating conditions. High resolution spectra over the C 1s regions showed that the soot particulates surface mostly consisted of graphitic carbon with some organic content. Corresponding relative peak intensities suggest that organics observed by FTIR-ATR are not concentrated in a surface film. Taken with FTIR-ATR measurements, this serves as strong evidence for matrix distributed organic content. A small (< 20%) surface oxygen content was observed by XPS, consistent with FTIR suggesting that the organic content is mainly alkyl hydrocarbons rather than oxygenated species. ▼ This study aims to clarify the spray development of ethanol, gasoline and iso-octane fuel, delivered by a multi-hole injector and spark-ignition direct-injection (SIDI) fuelling system. The focus is on how fuel properties and injection pressure impact temporal and spatial evolution of sprays at various ambient conditions. Two optical facilities were used: (1) a constant-flow spray chamber simulating cold-start conditions and (2) a single-cylinder SIDI engine running at normal, warmed-up operating conditions. In these optical facilities, Mie-scattering imaging is performed to measure penetrations of spray plumes at various injection pressures of 4, 7, 11 and 15 MPa. Experiments were first performed in the spray chamber to measure the spray tip penetration and penetration rate of ethanol, gasoline and iso-octane. It is observed that at 4 MPa injection pressure, the tip penetration length of ethanol sprays is shorter than that of gasoline sprays, likely due to lower injection velocity and increased nozzle loss associated with higher density and increased viscosity of ethanol, respectively. This assertion is further supported by the longest penetration length of iso-octane that has the lowest density among tested fuels and similar viscosity to gasoline. At higher injection pressure of 7 and 11 MPa, the penetration length difference between ethanol and gasoline sprays decreases and eventually ethanol sprays show a longer penetration length than that of gasoline sprays at the highest injection pressure of 15 MPa. This reversed trend is possibly because the penetration regime is changed such that the tip penetration is limited by aerodynamic drag force applied to fuel droplets, instead of the injection velocity or nozzle loss of the liquid jet. It is suggested that with increasing injection pressure, the fuel jet atomisation and droplet breakup enhance and therefore the lower aerodynamic drag associated with higher droplet size of ethanol sprays than that of gasoline sprays leads to a longer penetration length. The same trends of spray penetrations of ethanol, gasoline, and iso-octane are observed in the warmed optical engine with overall higher tip penetration length than that in the cold spray chamber primarily due to decreased air density and increased fuel temperature. In the same warmed optical engine, the effect of injection pressure on the structural transformation of flash-boiling sprays of gasoline and ethanol is investigated for two fuel injection timings of 90 and 300 crank angle degrees after top dead centre, corresponding to low and high ambient pressure conditions, respectively. The macroscopic spray structure was quantified using spray tip penetrations, spray spreading angles and spray areas. From the measurements, it is found that fuel sprays injected at the earlier injection timing, when the vapour pressure of the fuel is higher than the ambient pressure, show the convergence of the spray plumes towards the injector axis evidencing the flash-boiling phenomenon. ▼ Complexes, intrigantes et invitant à un retour sur soi, les créations du chorégraphe Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui rappellent que les mutations sociales entraînées par les rapports croissants de contiguïté entre les différentes cultures mettent forcément à l'épreuve nos présupposés existentiels ainsi que l'ensemble de nos croyances. Il nous a donc semblé intéressant de saisir comment la pluralité des formes artistiques qu'il convoque dans ses (co)créations, qui reposent sur un principe de collaboration, lui permet de mettre en œuvre un dialogue interculturel authentique, à savoir un dialogue axé sur une volonté d'apprentissage et de compréhension réciproque. Ainsi, nous montrerons dans le premier chapitre comment l'expérience de l'altérité que ce créateur belgo-marocain met au-devant de la scène, depuis ses tout débuts, se développe de pair avec une investigation toujours plus en profondeur du processus dialogique, mais aussi de ses enjeux, conditions et exigences. Cette analyse esthétique qui témoignera du cheminement artistique de Cherkoui, tout en éclairant la place qu'y occupent les pièces de notre corpus, soit zero degrees (2005), Sutra (2008) et Babel(words) (2010), nous conduira à affirmer que son discours scénique se positionne sous l'épithète de l'interculturalisme dans les arts vivants. Après avoir avancé l'idée que l'herméneutique contemporaine offre une approche féconde pour aborder son vocabulaire chorégraphique, nous illustrerons comment cet artiste flamand, à partir de l'expérience corporelle, s'emploie à témoigner de l'ouverture constitutive des cultures – ouverture qui permet une contamination réciproque et fructueuse tant sur le plan artistique qu'humain. Dans ce deuxième chapitre, nous prendrons à la fois appui sur certaines thèses de l'herméneutique philosophique de Hans-Georg Gadamer, sur les analyses phénoménologiques de l'être-au-monde de Maurice Merleau-Ponty, ainsi que sur les écrits anthropologiques d'Edward T. Hall et de David Le Breton. Le troisième chapitre de ce mémoire traitera finalement de la quête de sens qui réside au cœur de la pratique scénique de Cherkaoui, une quête indissociable d'un rapport à l'altérité, surtout en cette ère d'intense proximité culturelle. L’objectif est la construction numérique d’un modèle 3D régional de la plaine de Sidi Bouzid permettant la quantification du transfert hydrique et du rôle des crues sur le processus de recharge. Des simulations numériques de l’écoulement ont été réalisées à l’aide de Feflow et validées par des données mesurées in situ. Une conceptualisation des paramètres d’entrée a été réalisée afin de contourner l’absence de données mesurées. L'hétérogénéité de la zone non saturée a un impact significatif sur la variation du flux vertical et la propagation du front d’humidité. Les résultats obtenus en 1D ont été spatialisés à l’échelle de la plaine avec l’objectif de quantifier l’ensemble des flux d’écoulements. L’originalité réside, d’une part, dans la détermination des conditions aux limites appliquées à la surface du sol à partir des hydrogrammes des crues enregistrés et, d’autre part, au modèle conceptuel limitant l’évaporation. Le modèle hydrodynamique a mis en évidence que le bilan hydrique est fortement excédentaire. Les simulations de l’écoulement ont montré que l’approche des épandages de crues au niveau des périmètres surestime la recharge artificielle de la nappe.

The aim of this study is to set up a 3D regional model to quantify water flux in unsaturated-saturated zones and the role of floods on the recharge process. Therefore, numerical flow simulations were conducted using the finite element Feflow that will be validated by measured data. A conceptualization of input parameters was carried out to overcome the absence of measured data. The heterogeneity of the vadose zone have a significant impact on the variation of the vertical flow, the residence time and the propagation of wetting front in the unsaturated zone. The results obtained in 1D were then used to quantify groundwater recharge of the entire area of the study site. The original approach is to derive the time-dependent hydraulic boundary condition of water level at the soil surface of the spreading perimeters by measured flood hydrographs and to develop a limited conceptual model of water uptake by evaporation. The hydrodynamic model showed that the water balance is very important. Flow simulations have shown that the perimeter flooding approach overestimates the artificial recharge of the aquifer.

▼ Resumen Los sistemas de inyección directa han sido uno de los principales puntos focales de la investigación en motores, particularmente en sistemas Diésel, donde la geometría interna, movimiento de aguja y comportamiento del flujo afectan el spray externo y por tanto determinan completamente el proceso de combustión dentro del motor. Debido a regulaciones medioambientales y al potencial de los (más ineficientes) motores "Otto", grandes esfuerzos se están aportando en investigación sobre sistemas de inyección directa de gasolina. Los motores GDi tienen el potencial de incrementar sustancialmente la economía de combustible y cumplir con las regulaciones de gases contaminantes y de efecto invernadero, aunque aún existen muchos desafíos por delante. Esta tesis estudia en detalle una moderna tobera GDi que fue específicamente diseñada para el grupo de investigación conocido como Engine Combustion Network (ECN). Con metodologías punteras, este inyector ha sido usado en un amplio abanico de instalaciones experimentales para caracterizar el flujo interno y varias características clave de geometría y funcionamiento, y aplicarlo para evaluar cómo se relaciona con los efectos observados del comportamiento del chorro externo. Le califat de Hamdallahi a été gouverné successivement par trois dirigeants dont tous portaient le prénom « Amadou » pendant un demi-siècle de 1818 à 1862. La capitale du califat se trouvait dans la région du Macina au centre de l’actuel Mali en Afrique de l’Ouest. Cette région a connu de nombreuses mutations au XIXe siècle, particulièrement sur le plan intellectuel, politique et confrérique. Cette étude couvre uniquement la période de 1800 et 1866 dans la région du Macina. Ce travail s’est basé sur un texte polémique entre les Qādiris et les Tījānis ouest africains du XIXe siècle. Ce choix a pour but d’élargir davantage la documentation sur l’histoire du Macina et surtout faire connaître la littérature ouest africaine du XIXe siècle. L’historiographie de la région s’est jusqu’à présent fondée sur des jugements rapides ne reposant pas sur une étude approfondie des textes, l’intérêt de ce choix est justement de faire parler les textes autour de ces problématiques.Cette étude illustre en partie l’histoire intellectuelle et politique de l’Afrique de l’Ouest au XIXe siècle. Le texte a été composé après la victoire militaire d’al-Ḥājj Umar dans la région du Macina en 1862. Cette conquête a mis fin définitivement à l’existence d’un État théocratique connu sous le nom de califat de Hamdallahi, un des États les plus organisés politiquement en Afrique de l’ouest au XIXe siècle. Ce conflit politique s’est transformé en partie en un conflit d’ordre confrérique. Ibn Yerkoy Talfi disciple d’al-Ḥājj Umar et idéologue tījāni était dans le camp des vainqueurs et s’est retourné contre le plus haut responsable de la confrérie Qādiriyya subsaharienne Aḥmad al-Bakkay. Ce dernier était représentant de la confrérie Qādiriyya et se trouvait parmi les vaincus, Aḥmad al-Bakkay avaient longtemps critiqué al-Ḥājj Umar et sa confrérie.Une investigation beaucoup plus large et une analyse critique des textes nous ont permis de revenir sur certains sujets déjà étudiés auparavant par exemple : la surévaluation de la question confrérique en toile de fond, les enjeux des relations Kunta/Peuls dans la période étudiée. For half a century from 1818-1862, the Hamdallahi Caliphate was ruled by three successive leaders who each carried the name “Amadou.” The capital of the Caliphate was located in the Macina region which is in the center of modern-day Mali in West Africa. This region witnessed numerous changes over the course of the nineteenth century, especially in its intellectual, political and Sufi configurations. This study is focused exclusively on the period from 1800 to 1866 in the Macina region. ▼ Beyond the standardized global model, the Mode 2 can reveal a very marked intra-site, regional and inter-regional typological and technological variability before its replacement by the Middle Stone Age cultures. The site of Sidi Zin (Tunisia) is one of the major Acheulean sites in North Africa, which still retains a considerable archaeological potential to be exploited in the understanding and interpretation of variability within the techno-complexes of Mode 2 in the Maghreb. This site is one of the rare sites of North Africa that has delivered a Mode 2 industry in stratigraphy with cleavers interspersed between two levels, lower and upper, exempted from cleavers. A reexamination of the old material, resulting from the old excavations carried out by E.G. Gobert, as well as the study of new lithic series from excavation and the surface, allowed us to better describe and analyze the morpho-technological characteristics of this industry and to distinguish and discuss the different levels of variability in terms of composition and technical strategies. This variability is perceptible in terms of the economy and the modalities in which the raw material is managed. The lithic industry of Sidi Zin is also marked by variability in the choice of the “façonnage” supports and techniques and types of production between: - Two levels, lower and upper, without cleavers, characterized by the dominance of the total handaxes and pebble-tools; - A middle level with cleavers and handaxes, mostly partials, in which the natural bases and pebble-tools disappear. This variability is to be explained either by cultural or functional factors related to the accomplishment of specific activities by Sidi Zin hominins. ▼ Current emphasis on decreasing vehicle fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from the automotive sector directs many research efforts towards two gasoline engine technologies, namely, the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines, and the downsized TurboCharged (TC) Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engines with variable valve timing (VVT). In the HCCI category, many actuation strategies have been proposed with the more popular being the dual-fuel strategies and the high residual recycling. In this thesis, a heat recycling strategy is considered, specifically, a heated-air inlet HCCI engine with two intake throttles that control the cold and hot air streams. To facilitate the control analysis and development, a physics-based crank-angle resolved and a mean-value models are developed for feedback controller design. We discover that the combustion duration defined as the duration between the crank angle of 10% and 90% fuel burned, provides a universal set point for all speeds and loads for both combustion stability and fuel efficiency. Based on a novel allocation of two actuators, the hot and cold throttles, a feedback controller is designed and simulated to regulate the combustion duration at a desired value during load changes. In the category of the TC SIDI engines, we address the important problem of reducing the calibration complexity when these engines are intended to run on gasoline (E0) and/or a blend of up to 85% ethanol (E85). Typically, there is variability in the optimal VVT and spark values for every blend of gasoline-ethanol. This variability burdens the calibration task for these engines with many degrees of freedom (throttle, VVT, wastegate, fuel injection timing and duration, and spark timing). We first address the transient coupling between throttle and VVT in controlling the air charge. A model-based valve compensator is designed to improve the transient behavior of cylinder charge and torque during tip-ins and tip-outs with the VVT system transitions from set-points. An extremum seeking (ES) controller tuned based on the engine model demonstrates the convergence of both spark timing and VVT to the optimal values to achieve the best fuel efficiency. ▼ This dissertation presents new evidence about Anglo-Moroccan relations in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with particular reference to the development of the links between the Gharb region of Morocco and Gibraltar and the establishment of the Moroccan consulate there. This evidence is used to re-evaluate prevailing arguments about Moroccan isolationism, especially during the reign of Mawlay Sulaymān (r. 1792-1822), linking this to the nature of the Moroccan sultanate's foreign and trade policy over the longer term. It is argued that the Sīdī Muḥammad b. 'Abd Allāh's (r. 1757-90) well-known 'opening up' of the country should be seen not just as a response to European expansion, but also as a continuation of the sultanate's historical development as a state based partly on the control of trade. It is further argued that Mawlay Sulaymān and his successor Mawlay 'Abd al-Raḥmān (r. 1822-59) essentially followed Sīdī Muḥammad's policy. With reference to this context, the dissertation analyses the development of the Moroccan consulate in Gibraltar, including re-dating its initial establishment. The example of the consulate is also applied to reconsidering dominant assumptions about the role of religious discourse in limiting Morocco's contact with the outside world by assessing the wider social and economic context in which it operated, specifically the growth of trade between Gibraltar and the Gharb and the related development of a group of both Jewish and Muslim Moroccan merchants who partly conducted it. The dissertation finally assesses the political importance of these trade links and commercial interests, and how they influenced the operation of power and authority in the Gharb. The overall case is presented in the context of a critique of civilisational or culturalist approaches to the study of reactions to European expansion and modernity that prioritise cultural difference between Western and, in this case, Muslim societies. It is argued that the Straits of Gibraltar - a ubiquitous symbol of the supposed dividing line between different civilisations - actually illustrate the importance of the interaction between different societies for accurately understanding their development and the agency of actors on both sides.
