▼ Transgender care networks are few and far between. Rural transgender care is even more difficult to come by and is seldom discussed in the literature. This article provides a comprehensive literature review of rural transgender care and describes the process of establishing holistic transgender care in a rural town or community. Social workers have a key role to play in transgender care, especially in rural areas where services are often difficult to find or nonexistent. The authors provide social workers with key information about how to locate services and physicians, and train them to provide affirming and compassionate care to those seeking transition. This article also provides information for health care providers who wish to make their own practice more inclusive to the transgender population.

▼ Precarious employment is often experienced as contract
work, involuntary part-time
work, low wage
work, and self-employment. There is a well-developed body of literature pointing to negative health, economic, and social impacts related to precarious employment in urban centres, while little consideration has been given to the particularities that may make a
rural precarious employment experience different.
The goal of this exploratory research project is to understand the experience of being precariously employed in
rural Ontario. Nineteen unstructured individual interviews with
rural Ontarians experiencing
rural precarious employment were conducted. The phenomenon of
rural precarious employment was distinguished by five themes (financial, health, self-view, social, and system) emergent through phenomenology. The phenomenon encompassed experiences of poverty, decreased health, negative self-views, social struggles, and marginalization from support public systems.
Unpacking precarious employment in
rural Ontario from the experience of workers has significance for both
rural scholars and policy makers.
Rural scholars benefit from a better understanding of precarious employment as an experience in
rural areas, and the addition of lived
rural experiences to the precarious employment literature advances the understanding of urban bias in scholarship. This research provides provincial policy makers the opportunity to craft
rural focused employment policy and better understand how services can support
rural precarious employees.

▼ This dissertation examines a number of issues related to how gender and social status shape out-migration, education,
work, and family. In many
rural communities, the bulk of local employment has shifted from high-wage resource extraction and manufacturing to low-wage service jobs, including recreation, health care, and education (Flora et al., 1992; Morris & Western, 1999). These changes have also presented a shift in the availability of jobs which can increase or maintain prestige and social status, especially for men. This change, in addition to women surpassing men in academic performance and college graduation rates in the early 1980s (Massey, 2007), as well as what has been coined the "mancession" (Rampell, 2009), has caused much public outcry about "the end of men" (Homans, 2012; Rosin, 2012) and concerns about women becoming the more powerful sex. These economic changes have raised concerns about changes in gender roles and relations (Bianchi et al., 2012; Hurd & Rohwedder, 2010; Kimmel, 2009).
This study is an in-depth exploration of how
rural gender expectations and norms about education,
work, and family interact with social status to both constrain and enhance educational and employment opportunities within a
rural context that, despite changing economic realities, still tends to favor traditional gender roles and hegemonic masculinity (Connell, 1995). I find that men and traditional masculinity continue to be privileged, even in
work environments dominated by women. Although many women feel conflicted between family and
work obligations, they too tend to do gender in a way that favors femininity as intimately linked to roles within the family. This study focuses on the distinct ways in which men and women manage gender and social status and how these strategies promotes a hegemonic form of
rural masculinity in relation to education,
work, and family that is uniquely tied to positions within the locally-defined social hierarchy.

▼ This research project is an examination of the challenges of service delivery to clients in the child welfare system in a
rural eastern California county. Coordinating and delivering services is an ongoing difficulty for all
rural service providers working with child welfare throughout the country as many clients are isolated, the resources are scarce, programs may be lacking adequate structure or funding, long-distance travel is challenging, and specialized staffing is limited. This particular county is spread over 3,000 square miles of mountainous terrain, is neighbored by other
rural counties, and the closest California metropolitan city is about 300 miles away. This study followed a constructivist paradigm because of the amount of different service providers from various fields, and the subjective nature of the problem being presented. Seven agency administrators and direct service providers who interact with clients participated in face-to-face interviews in order to develop a joint construction of the challenges and strengths when it comes to delivering services to child welfare clients in this community. The researcher analyzed the constructs of each participant through open coding and brought these constructs to a member check meeting.
The findings of this research show that challenges for this
rural community include outreach and prevention, recruitment and retention, providers having to perform multiple roles, utilizing grants and funding streams more advantageous to urban service providers, and travel difficulties with the vast geography and inclement weather conditions. Strengths of providing
rural services were also identified which include having lower caseloads, being able to provide more individualized services, and an increased collaboration between service providers.
The implications of this research for micro social
work practice allow for further adaptations of micro practice interventions and strategies in
rural communities in order to best serve clients and efficiently utilize resources. This research allows for the development of macro social
work considerations such as more specific policies around grant terms for
rural provider, department hiring strategies, and policy improvements.

During the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of denunciations and evidence of slavery work in the Brazilian rural zone, despite the presence of juridical norms aiming to protect the worker against this form of exploration. Indebtedness and the use of violence are the main instruments used to hinder the workers liberty. The juridical understanding on the subject, based on national and international norms, makes it possible the development of more institutional and efficient actions aiming the eradication of slave labor. The observance of the paradigm of decent work will permit the rural worker to develop his/her activity under dignified conditions.

The unemployment of young people aged between 16 and 24 in Brazil worries the country by reaching the number of 3.5 million, which represents about 45% of the national workforce. Besides the concern with the fact that will exist, or not, employment opportunities for this contingent of young, it is necessary to know which kind of work will be aimed at this population group. The migration of young people from poorer regions of the country, particularly in some states of the northeast region, in search of employment in the Southeast region, has been a constant in the story…

▼ This dissertation examines the origins and development of the cheese industry in rural Ontario between the 1860s and 1930s from the perspective of environmental history. Scholars have generally accepted contemporary beliefs that cheese was a “natural industry of this country” and that its growth was cooperative and inevitable. This dissertation tests these claims by comparing the rhetoric and actions of the rural elite and state officials against the human and extra-human work involved in manufacturing cheese for export, a method that has yielded new interpretations about the character and development of the industry. I build on James Murton’s concept of “alternative rural modernity” to argue that rural cheese manufacturing was a project of rural reform encouraged by elite ‘dairy reformers,’ rather than a natural development. Reformers believed cheese factories could support the social, economic and environmental stability of rural society indefinitely. Through cheese, they sought to create a society that was liberal and capitalist, but also cooperative and stable. They also believed that dairying would restore fertility to the region’s soils. In practice, however, their results were mixed. Although cheese became one of the province’s most significant export-oriented industries, transformed the environment, and deepened liberal values amongst rural people, it failed to deliver the alternative rural modernity reformers had envisioned. I provide two reasons why. First, the reformers’ mechanistic vision could not contend with the complexity and unpredictability of the socio-ecological world they sought to control. Second, the industry could not withstand the pressures of the emerging global capitalist food system and, ironically, facilitated the rise of ‘Big Dairy’ after the First World War, which hastened the industry’s demise. Overall, this dissertation emphasizes the dynamism of rural Ontario, contributes to an environmental history of liberal order in Canada, and contextualizes the resurgence of craft-based rural development in the twenty-first century.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
This dissertation examines the origins and development of the factory cheese industry in rural Ontario between the 1860s and 1930s. I challenge the belief that cheese manufacturing was a “natural industry of this country” whose development was cooperative and inevitable. Instead I argue that the industry was a deliberate project of rural reform encouraged by elite ‘dairy reformers’ who believed cheese factories could sustain the social, economic, and environmental progress of rural society indefinitely. The industry failed to deliver all the reformers promised, even though it became one of the province’s most significant export-oriented industries by the early-twentieth century and transformed the environment and rural society in the process. Rural people and the environment behaved in more complicated ways than reformers anticipated, and the changing capitalist economy made the industry’s long-term success untenable. This…

▼ From cases of slavery by debt in contemporaneous agriculture, in this project I interpret the process of reconstruction of workers identity dimensions in Cocais area, in Maranhão, particularly in the cities of Presidente Dutra e Dom Pedro. The targets of this study are the workers submitted to slavery by debt outside this State, between 1990 and 2008. In this analysis I intend to evidence how I approximate myself with the investigated phenomenon and how it was done the weaving of the wires that make this search. This investigation goes on when I identify, though bibliographic and documental sources, the historic relationships that the rural workers from Maranhão and from the reported area created with this phenomenon of slavery by debt, mainly, in the Amazonic area. Then, my analysis stays in Cocais area, its history and memory about rural workers life and quotidian. From the oral report and pieces of memory of the investigated workers are interpreted, in the last part of this project, what it is revealed about slavery by debt and about the identity dimensions that emerge from this historic people.

▼ Solidarity economy is a form of social organization based on collaborative work and networking, its an alternative economy that became a reality amid the current capitalist logic. Its a proposal that provides a new orientation of life space and social interactions, from a perspective of sustainable development, solidarity and quality of life. Considering that the social and economic organization allows different work processes and standards of living, this study sought to relate workers health conditions to their participation into a solidarity initiative. Considering the discursive approach through Brazilian public policies of solidarity and health, the present research aimed to investigate its relationships and possibly effectiveness by making interviews and analysing testimonials from people involved in a solidarity project called Feirão Colonial Projeto Esperança/Cooesperança, created in Santa Maria, Brazil. In order to reach this goal, a health/ecosystem approach were used to guide and analyze the content of the interviews which were carried out with leaders, farmers and consumers. The results showed that there is a close relation between health and work, and how important it is to have a well organised productive chain followed by a logic based on solidarity economy. In addition to this perspective this assignment could show how important and influential is this new social organization in providing improvements in workers health conditions.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Background Due to an ongoing shortage of rural medical professionals both in Australia and internationally, the recruitment and retention of rural doctors has been extensively researched. Mostly the research used quantitative methods to focus on factors associated with rural medical workforce recruitment and retention issues, and until now, limited work has investigated inter-relationships between these factors. Although a few qualitative studies have used thematic analysis to develop models to better understand these issues, none have specifically considered the attitudes of medical students, and female rural doctors. This Thesis responds to this need by using qualitative research methods to develop a model which incorporates feminisation of the medical workforce and generational change in the 21st century. Data were collected from Australian medical students and female rural general practitioners (GPs) as study participants. Aims The broad aims were to develop a model for understanding recruitment and retention of rural doctors in Australia, incorporating concepts of place, gender, and professional identity. Research Questions How are Australian medical students' and female general practitioners' perceptions of entering and remaining in a rural health career influenced by the constructs of place, gender and professional identity? Does this perception change as doctors progress through their careers from students to practising general practitioners? Methods A case series of three qualitative studies were used to develop a model for understanding rural GP recruitment and retention. Data, collected using focus groups and interviews, were analysed thematically by domains describing participants’ lives, and the interaction between the domains was explored to better understand influences on location choice. Results The 'Landscape of fulfilment' model which is integral to this research, incorporates the domains of self, place, work, significant others, recreation, and significant others’ work as the domains of life which influence location choice. Most participants sought balance within their lives, and maximum fulfilment in all domains, but at times they faced conflict between domains. Individuals’ gender, professional, and place identities were related to how they viewed the domains and how the domains interacted. Conclusion This model provides a way of understanding the complex interaction between aspects of life which affect a doctor’s location choice. There is important potential to use the model to inform the development of rural medical recruitment and retention strategies, and as a basis for further rural health workforce research. The model has already been used by General Practice Education and Training (GPET) in developing post graduate general practice training research, and also by the Sustainable Practice Working Group of the Rural Faculty of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) in developing strategies for sustainable rural general…

The aim of this study was the investigation of whether, how and what knowledge has been mobilized and / or produced in the reading experience, especially with regard to the relationship between such knowledge and the work activities of the participants. This is a qualitative research and as a methodological procedure, semi-structured interviews with workers who participate in the Leadership Development Program. This program, coordinated by the researcher conducts activities including seminars reading with agricultural workers. Data were analyzed using the technique of content analysis in the light of ergological approach, from the concepts from the field of youth and adult education and freirean concepts. Throughout the dissertation, we sought the necessary understanding of the context which are inserted those subject. The understanding the dynamics of the company, professional scene of the workers surveyed, was grounded in Marxism. All this input enabled adequate exploration of the responses obtained in the interviews. According to the results, this dissertation suggests that the systematic practice of reading can stimulate the emergence of knowledge and contribute to the empowerment of agricultural workers by developing a critical stance toward the world.

▼ This thesis is an investigation into primary health care (PHC) nursing in Australia, focused on the interface between nurses, their health organisations and the local community. It is set during a period of significant cultural and structural change informed by the move towards a National Primary Health Strategy within health reform. Nurses, as the predominant health workforce in community settings, are pivotal to governments’ health reform agenda; however there are tensions evident with different groups, with different expectations and interests, positioning nurses as providers of PHC. The aim of this study is to explore nurses’ agency through identity work to inform an understanding of contemporary rural PHC nursing in Australia with a focus on how control and agency are evident in PHC nurse identity work. Using a Critical Realist theoretical perspective, an explanation of PHC nursing identity, as a social structure, is presented through analysis of the interactions between structure and agency within a social, cultural and historical context.
Expansion of the role of General Practice is an integral component of the PHC reforms. Historically, Federal Government incentives to increase the number of nurses in these settings were provided to rural General Practice settings. Rural communities experience significantly higher burdens of disease in comparison to urban settings coupled with difficulties in recruitment and retention of health professionals. Therefore, PHC nursing within small outer regional communities provides a distinct and relevant context for this study, given these changing health service environments.
Two forms of empirical data were gathered which reflected PHC nurse identity work at different levels. The first data source consisted of 265 publicly available documents submitted to the National Health and Hospital Reform Commission to inform the draft National PHC Strategy. These documents, as texts, reflected PHC nurse identity work at a broad national level by key groups with an interest in positioning nursing within PHC. Transcripts of interviews with 21 rural nurses working in various PHC settings in two Australian States provided the second source of data, reflecting identity work at the level of individual PHC nurses. Content analysis of the public submissions and thematic analysis of the interview transcripts provided evidence of PHC nurse identity work.
Nurses’ individual interests were predominantly focused on the local context of their clients/community and their local health team through a broad range of nursing roles. Organisations representing government and medical interests emphasised particular nursing roles, and focused on the allocation of funding resources, structuring of medical leadership and support for those roles. There was evidence of nursing’s attempts at developing collective agency as PHC nurses. However, resource allocations for and managerial control of particular nursing roles in PHC evidenced ambiguity regarding PHC nurses’ collective agency in being able to…

▼ This thesis is an ethnography of four rural Anglican communities of faith in Tasmania. Drawing on theorists and concepts from both sociology and theology I examine how a new model of ministry (Enabler Supported Ministry) has facilitated re-invigoration, growth, and an outward focus in these rural parishes, which were formerly characterized by decline and impending closure. My study explores how these four parishes, rather than adhering to traditional forms of ministry and resisting change, have embraced change in both ministry and outlook.
My research sits at the boundary between sociology and theology. I draw on theorists such as Weber, Berger, Drane, Lyon, Bouma, Ammerman, and Finke and Stark who, likewise, explore this fruitful and rewarding intersection of the two disciplines. This thesis is primarily sociological but, given the subject matter of the thesis, it is impossible to separate out the theological and by working at the intersection of these two disciplines I hope to produce a rich analysis.
This research is unique and important because it addresses a much-needed area of study in its sociological analysis of rural Anglican parishes in Australia. It is also methodologically innovative because of my ‘insider/outsider status’ and my explicit use of participatory action research. There are surprisingly few ethnographic studies of contemporary Christianity, and very few of contemporary Christianity in rural locations, particularly from an Australian perspective or context. Much of the contemporary sociology of religion literature is either large scale analyses of secondary data charting changes in church attendance based on census figures of religious identification, or studies of new religious movements or minority religious groups of various types.
In this thesis I argue that, despite the complex and interconnected processes characterizing modern society (such as secularization, pluralism, post-modernism, detraditionalization, deinstitutionalization of religious belief, consumer oriented religious preference and fundamentalism), the reason these four rural parishes have undergone a process of re-invigoration and, each in their own context, have a sustainable future is a combination of both theological and social factors. I describe how, in contrast to their neighbouring parishes which share similar demographic and socio-economic contexts, these four parishes have experienced the longest period of sustained health and stability in their recent history. I would suggest that this is because, in each instance, becoming an Enabler Supported Ministry parish is a homologous response of these parishes to their context. That is, they are sociologically apt; and they are theologically apt, too.

▼ South Africa is characterized by large-scale unemployment and it has been severe
among women, especially those in rural areas. Unemployment has increased the
vulnerability of many households therefore most rural households rely mainly on state
social grants of which the child support grant is most popular. Education is one of the
most important factors determining employment and thus income. Illiteracy among
Black people in rural areas is higher than the national average. The lack of education
of the head of a household is closely correlated with poverty in households.
HIV/AIDS on the other hand, is one of the most rapidly spreading pandemics in the
world and there is well documented evidence that the largest number of people living
with the HI-virus is found in Africa and especially in South Africa. The majority of
people living with HIV in the North West Province are part of households living in
unfavourable economic situations. The extent to which people can protect themselves
from HIV infection depends on their knowledge of perceived risk and their capacity
to apply that knowledge. Based on the above, it is clear that professional and
structured intervention is necessary to address these socio-economic problems rural
communities are facing.
The aim of the research was to engage in an exploratory investigation to determine the
need for social work intervention in a rural community with regard to unemployment
and HIV/AIDS.
The population studied in this research consisted of 230 households in the rural
community called Heuningvlei which was randomly selected. The interview schedule
was utilized and the head of household or the next in charge completed the interview
schedule. The findings showed that unemployment and HIV/AIDS are dual problems
that negatively affect the rural community and therefore needs to be addressed in a
structured and professional manner. In conclusion it can be said that the research has proved that social work intervention
is necessary to address unemployment and HIV/AIDS in a rural community

▼ The study was conducted in Heuningvlei community in the Kgalagadi District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province. This study was part of the "Tshwaragano Project" with the general aim of empowering the disadvantaged communities in rural areas.
The aim of this research was to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a social group work empowerment programme for poverty stricken families in rural areas of the Northern Cape Province.
To achieve this aim, the following objectives needed to be attained:
• To study the psycho-social effects of poverty on rural families. This objective was achieved by means of a critical review and analysis of the relevant literature. It is therefore concluded that poverty is the most problematic social problem facing the South African society today. It is a global problem that troubles many families in South Africa and affects people both psychologically and socially.
• To determine the fundamental causes of poverty on rural families and their strengths to survive. This investigation indicated that poverty in the SADC region is reflected in the low levels of income, and high levels of human deprivation. Unemployment is also the greatest single cause of deep poverty in rural areas. These factors can be traced back to education and illiteracy of Heuningvlei community members. There is close association between poverty and lack of education. Poor or non existent of agricultural practices also bears reference to the alarming rates of poverty in rural areas.
• To design and implement a social group work empowerment programme for poverty stricken rural families. This programme was presented successfully over a stretch of eight group sessions to sixteen community members and was exceptionally appropriate to improve their knowledge regarding poverty. They also received skills to start their own income generating projects. By means of this programme the members of the group also enhanced their social functioning
• To evaluate the effectiveness of a social group work programme in empowering poverty stricken rural families. The evaluation of the programme was done by means of a measuring scale instrument called Personal Multi-screening Inventory (PMSI) scale developed by the Perspective Training College in Potchefstroom. The results obtained through this evaluation indicated that a social group work empowerment programme had brought a significant change in the lives of the members. It was therefore concluded that the programme was successful and effective in the sense that members felt that there was a transition in their lives. Group members indicated that the Tshwaragano social group work empowerment programme provided a positive growth in their lives and it was a learning opportunity that shifted their thinking, for instance the discouragement of the feeling of "apathy" and dependence on the government.
In summary it can be stated that proof has emerged from this research that a scientifically founded, well-planned social group work empowerment programme can undoubtedly be…

▼ The purpose of this community-based participatory research was to understand the employment-health association for immigrant/refugee women from Korea, Asia, Africa, Japan, Arab world and Latin America (KAAJAL) in Grand Erie –a mid-sized urban/rural region in Ontario, Canada. The study utilized photovoice –a visual qualitative research methodology in which participants were given cameras to record their experiences. Intersectionality analysis of 525 participant-generated photographs, diaries, and in-depth interviews of twenty women revealed that various markers of difference such as nationality (i.e. native or foreign-born), immigrant status (i.e. family class sponsorship), geography (i.e. rural or urban residence), socio-economic status, sexuality, age, ability and race intersected to influence women’s health and employment experiences. The results have several policy and practice implications including highlighting individual, organizational, and family factors that lead to health related absenteeism, stress and health problems such as backaches, muscular problems and depression. The study builds on scant literature on work stress and women’s health for this population in Canada’s rural and mid-sized cities.

▼ Domestic violence (DV) negatively impacts individuals and families, including children, across the U.S. Yet, there is little research on the barriers and facilitators to services these families encounter, especially in
rural areas. The goal of this study was to examine service availability in
rural areas for families who have experienced domestic violence.
This study was conducted using a qualitative research design. Researchers conducted face-to-face and phone interviews with nine human services professionals in one
rural California community. The study used in-depth interviews with open-ended questions to encourage participants to share their views and experiences.
The findings were categorized into six key themes: limited knowledge of available services, gaps in
rural areas, client reluctance to seek/accept services, need for specialized training to handle crisis situations, families and providers experiencing crisis, and professional discretion on intervention. Implications from the findings suggest the need for increased advocacy, education, and specialized training for professionals and paraprofessionals who encounter DV. Furthermore, participants recommended the implementation of an immediate response team for DV and expressed a desire for an expansion of current domestic violence services in the study community such as shelters and domestic violence counselors.

▼ This thesis is based on fieldwork carried out among weavers of rush-woven objects in rural Taiwan. In this thesis, I argue that nowadays rush-weaving is good work, though not good labour, for the weavers, and the social logic of Yuanli rush-weaving lies in the process of craft production. It is an ethnographic investigation into the practice of rush-weaving in association with colonialism, the heritage movement, and museum operation. Firstly, this thesis examines the economics and history and practice of craft production, in order to understand how the craft industry has become what it is and what is embedded in the process of production. The skill-based knowledge required of weavers is embedded in the relationship between a weaver and her environment. While this fundamental characteristic remains, new meanings and uses are attached to craft practice and the objects produced. Secondly, this thesis explores the process by which craft production is involved in the heritage and museum movement in contemporary Taiwan, so as to understand the interrelationship between craft production and the movement. I consider how ideas of tradition, heritage, and museums are perceived and enacted in everyday life, and find that these ideas contain contradictions and have different meanings for insiders and outsiders. The analysis as a whole seeks to explain why artisans keep weaving in contemporary society, and that it must be understood in terms of their continuous reaction to the constant transformation that the rush-weaving industry has undergone, which is reflected in the relationship between artisans and their objects in the process of production. The thesis addresses current issues – which are both fiercely contested in events and policies, and marginalised in everyday life – in Taiwan, but also attempts to contribute to the anthropological perspective on knowledge in practice, technology and social logics, past and present, and tradition and innovation.

▼ Harm reduction approaches to psychoactive substance use continue to be a highly
politicized and polarizing topic in today’s society, even after several decades of ongoing
discourse. Many social workers work for and with organizations that include harm
reduction approaches to social work direct practice with individuals who use
psychoactive substances. This qualitative study of six participants explores social
workers’ perceptions of harm reduction work with individuals who use psychoactive
substances and the ways in which they perceive the implementation and
operationalization of harm reduction approaches in their direct practice in rural Central
Ontario. A semi-structured interview design was used, with the research grounded in
structural social work theory, as well as critical ecological theory and a person-centered
perspective. Findings indicate that stigma of individuals who use psychoactive substances
and associated harm reduction work is deeply rooted and reinforced within structural
systems, organizations, and within social work and harm reduction work, itself. Social
workers’ perception of harm reduction and it’s implementation cite organizational culture,
social work as harm reduction work, and clinical barriers to implementation as main
themes in the social work direct practice role, working with individuals who use
psychoactive substances. Social workers are equipped to support harm reduction work
through their social work worldview, and benefit from an organizational culture that both
formally and informally supports harm reduction work. An aligned organizational culture
and social work worldview can more effectively advocate for greater availability and
accessibility of harm reduction programming and services. Implications for research,
policy, and practice are discussed.

black, urban problem. Appalachia represents a
rural, largely white
and persistently impoverished population that is largely
under-examined in welfare literature. The present research examines
the ways that welfare-to-

welfare clients. Perceptions of people on welfare have long been
racialized but I plan to discuss how class and perceptions of
Appalachians come into play for poor, white, Appalachian welfare
recipients. To do this, I analyze qualitative interviews with the
program managers of the 24 Appalachian counties in Ohio from which
data were collected. I plan to explore how Ohio Works First program
managers talk about Appalachian clients with regards to their
cultural knowledge and capital, and to address the larger question
of what program managers mean when they refer to “Appalachian
mentality.”

The present paper examines trabalho avulso, consórcio de empregadores rurais and contrato de trabalho rural por pequeno prazo as alternatives to formalize the rural work with short duration relationship. From the perspective of decent work and preserving the workers dignity, this study is concerned in researching the legal national system adequacy with the small rural producers reality and workers contracted by it for activities that do not last more than a few days or weeks. The adaptability of the right to the reality and legal models adequacy to social actors needs are perceived as a necessary condition for the protection of the rural workers dignity. Each of the three legal figures are critically analyzed to point to what extent are adapted to the peculiarities of the field and how much they are able to protect the rural workers fundamental rights. Upon such verification, elements are suggested to be considered in the search of viable alternatives to formalize the relations of rural work of short duration.

▼ Exotic dance research focuses almost exclusively on the working conditions of urban strip clubs and largely overlooks exotic dance in
rural areas. This ethnographic thesis examined the
work culture and structure of a
rural exotic dance club in the northeastern United States. I reflexively analyzed data from 22 in-depth interviews and 120 hours of participant observation to answer two research questions: (1) What occupational culture do
rural exotic show club dancers share?, and (2) How does the job of
rural show club dancing influence dancers’ relationships with people outside and inside the club? I found that the structure of this club fostered a generally positive occupational culture by emphasizing equality among dancers and by not allowing club patrons to touch dancers. Dancers’ interactions with co-workers were mostly friendly and comfortable, especially when workers were willing to closely adhere to the club’s cultural norms. Dancers’ interactions with people outside the club were strained by negative stereotypes associated with exotic dance. The study found that many dancers wanted to hide their stripper status from outsiders, but had trouble remaining anonymous within a socially dense
rural context.

▼ The purpose of this study is to explore the personal and professional experiences of rural social
workers. This is a qualitative study with a constructivist grounded theory lens. This study utilizes a
sample of four participants. The participants work in the social work field and live in northeastern
Ontario rural communities. Data was collected by audio-taped individual semi-structured interviews
and subsequent member checking. The question explored is, how do rural social workers experience
rural social work practice? Results of the study reveal that rural social workers experience both
challenges and strengths within their professional and personal lives. Three themes related to rural
social work emerged through data analysis. The themes include rural social workers as unprepared for
their work environments, rural social workers as having multiple roles and the strengths and challenges
rural social workers face. This research provides insight into the experiences of rural social workers
and recommendations for how to better prepare rural social workers. The study further provides
information related to implications for social work education, social work practice and implications for
future research. The implications for social work education include a recommendation that social work students be provided with a broad range of training in all areas, including rural social work practice.
The implications for social work practice include that we must encourage and maintain social workers
who demonstrate an interest in rural social work. Lastly, future research could be done regarding supervision and rural social workers.
