▼ This dissertation analyzes the means by which ritual traditions changed and spread throughout the
Roman provinces in
Gaul in the first two centuries CE. While numerous scholars have studied ritual shifts in
Roman Gaul with a focus on material culture and imagery, this has not been accompanied by a focus on the negotiations involving the non-elite. By including non-elite Gauls in the analysis, my research creates a full picture of religious change that traces how the traditions evolved and how these adaptations spread across the region. This project argues that ritual sites, practices of ritual deposition, monuments depicting the gods, burial traditions, burial stelae, and some commercial production were all part of the cultural negotiation regarding ritual among Gauls of various levels in the social hierarchy. Communication of these cultural negotiations was transmitted along the trade and pilgrimage travel routes in
Gaul, including both roads and rivers. Numerous individuals used these routes and discussed their own ideas and learned about other views of the gods on their journeys. As these ideas spread, they gradually standardized. This regional study, that covers a broad periodization, states that the provinces of
Gaul adopted
Roman ritual imports into their religion through a nuanced series of local cultural negotiations that were still part of a regional network connected by travel routes. This process takes into account communal choices in regional changes. By broadening the focus of the study of provincial societies, this dissertation shows that the changes brought into new areas by the Romans created a complex network of negotiation, which crossed social hierarchies and geographical boundaries.

▼ How did the Roman state affect areas under its control? This dissertation addresses that question by examining one area, northern Italy, which was administered by the state at its most and least intensive. In the Republican and Late Antique periods the state frequently and directly intervened in the area. During the Republic changing Roman conceptions of northern Italy led the state to intervene dramatically in ways that remade the physical and demographic landscape of the region, while in the late Roman period similarly changing attitudes led to reformulation of the region's purpose and position within the empire. In contrast, the Roman state's presence in northern Italy in the early Imperial period was minimal, and this study explores the reasons for and effects of that minimalist approach on northern Italy in the first and second centuries AD. Explanations for this early Imperial policy towards northern Italy are to be found not just in the region's late Republican history but also in the creation and evolution of Italian identities. Case studies of the Aemilia and the central Transpadana illustrate the intersection of these identities with state policy and ideology. These studies also examine the consequences of that intersection on everyday life in towns and in the countryside, on matters ranging from tombstones to taxes and from poetry to politics. Further case studies of Aquileia and Liguria look at how the state, even in its minimalist form, shaped the development of local economies and societies through the movement of people and goods around the empire. Together these studies examine the effects of the state on interregional networks as well as on individual communities.

▼ This paper examines the changing attitudes of Gallo-Romans from the time of Caesar's conquest in the 50s BCE to the start of Vespasian's reign in 70-71 CE and how Roman prejudice shaped those attitudes. I first examine the conflicted opinions of the Gauls in Caesar's time and how they eventually banded together against him but were defeated. Next, the activities of each Julio-Claudian emperor are examined to see how they impacted Gaul and what the Gallo-Roman response was. Throughout this period there is clear evidence of increased Romanisation amongst the Gauls and the prominence of the region is obvious in imperial policy. This changes with Nero's reign where Vindex's rebellion against the emperor highlights the prejudices still effecting Roman attitudes. This only becomes worse in the rebellion of Civilis the next year. After these revolts, the Gallo-Romans appear to retreat from imperial offices and stick to local affairs, likely as a direct response to Rome's rejection of them.

According to Zanker (2000:36-7), the Roman Basilica is one of the most characteristic Roman structures of any Roman city. A concrete symbol of the political, juridic and social Roman structure, it suffered morphologic and funcional alteractions both in time and space that still intrigate the scholars. The present work tries to reveal and understand this structure, its origins, its main physical and functional caracteristics, its transformations in Rome and the Empire, but most specially in the Gallia Comata, seeing it as an element of the process of urbanization of the Gallic privinciae. To do so, we performed a study of the basilicas since its begnning, in Rome, its difusion by the Empire and, like a means to know the basilicas of the Three Gauls (Lugdunensis, Aquitanica and Belgium, this one divided into Belgica, Germania Superior and Germania Inferior), a catalog was made, searching, besides the typological differences, the homogeneity in their utilization as elements of Roman urbanization of the former Gallia Comata. And, for better understanding the urbanization, it was studied the Gallic oppida (hillforts), the Celtic proto-cities of the II and I centuries BC, the period that immediately preceded the period of the Roman conquest.

This research envisaged to enlarge the discussion about the temples of Gaul tradition in urban spaces at the Roman Gaul during the High Roman Empire and to give bases for understanding these phenomena. Some debates perpassed all the conception, study and interpretation of data: the \"romanization\", the relationship between politics and religion, the continuation of Gaul religious cults and the space organization in Roman Gaul. The survey of plans where the fana had a relationship with the urban space built according with Roman architectural traditions, has allowed the establishment of data which, when compared to each other, allowed for the presentation of a more precise image of the role of Roman Gaul religiosity in face of the material and symbolic institution of the urban space.

Starting from issues about the provincial religiosity in the high Roman Empire, this work aims at raising and discussing the pillars, \"Jupiter columnsänd other types of correlated vestiges. The interest arisen by these monuments and their study by the bibliography of the XIX century established a \"toposs̈till in use, which gives directions to the Gallic Roman archaeological and religious interpretations. With the theoretical assumptions of the post-contemporary debates and post-colonial theories and in order to understand the devotions and worship services, a series of analysis was made, with special emphasis on an iconographic approach.

This study aims to evaluate the importance of sacred water and cults connected with waters as part of eastern Gaul religious landscape, through the evolution of cult places and ritual practices. By extension, our goals is toprovide a better understanding of the transformations impacting religious activities and how it connects to the promotion of Romanitas by Gallic communities. The religious history of Gaul is well-known for conveying problematic concepts such as "naturist cults" or, in our case, "water cults". Therefore, we strived to study modern literary sources in order to deconstruct historiographical myths. Then, we completed this overview through a diligent re-reading of ancient sources. At this point, we were convinced that "water cult" was a flexible religious concept. Gallic communities would seize the idea of sacred water and cults connected with waters, and adapt it to their needs, even is shared religious norms seem to transcend time and cultures. In order to put this hypothesis to test, we challenged it against archaeological data through a selection of cult places from eastern Gaul, which, in return, allowed us to identify two main chronological phases forming the pattern of the evolution of water cults in Gallo-Roman religious landscape. The first chronological phase stretch from the first century B.C. to the first half of the first century A.D., when this new facet becomes an increasingly growing trend. Afterwards, that new religious discourse reaches a…

The subject of this research project is the study of Roman wall-painting in eastern Cisalpine Gaul, more specifically dealing with the aspects of the creation and development of the local workshops and their peculiar characteristics. The area taken into consideration is set between Altino and Trieste: within this territory Aquileia and Altino have represented the two privileged research fields, given the possibility to analyse thoroughly all the wall-painting evidence preserved in the Archaeological Museums. Direct examination, conducted with a specific attention to the plaster bearer and the painted surface, has been combined with the analysis of unpublished documentation which, in the case of Aquileia, has represented an indispensable instrument for the reconstruction of the original contexts. In this way it has been possible to re-define topographically some well known examples of wall-paintings which, together with many yet unpublished examples, contribute to give a new image of the private houses excavated during the last century.
This research has revealed an outline very rich in respect of the quantities and which has offered interesting starting points for the analysis of the different aspects of the production, specifically aimed to the recognition of local peculiarities developed by the workshops operating in this area.

▼ This thesis explores military identity in late
Roman Belgica II. It examines the central idea of a gradual
blurring of lines between soldiers and civilians which is often
identified as as a distinctive feature of the late Empire. This is
mediated through two scholary paradigms: integration and
militarisation. According to these, late Roman society was
dominated by the military in cultural terms as well as through
domination of the social and economic networks of ordinary life:
i.e. the cities and countryside. This study seeks to refine this
view through an examination of the province of Belgica II. This
province would appear to be an extreme example of the
militarisation process, but a closer study will reveal a more
nuanced picture. This study uses the idea of identity and the
sociological concepts of constructed and complex identities to
explore the dynamic nature of military identity and argue that the
late Roman period should be taken on its own terms, rather than
being compared with an idealised past. The study uses
archaeological and historical material, but adopts a
post-processualist approach, where relevant, with the material
evidence in an attempt to get away from older scholary ideas such
as, “Germanisation,” which often obscures our understanding. A
survey of the literary record from Gaul on military identity is
followed by an examination of military identities in Belgica II
through the remnants of its soldiers, forts, cities, countryside
and finally a brief survey of the changing world of the 5th
century. Cemetery evidence is used occasionally to deepen the
analysis, where appropriate. It is concluded that the terms of the
debate are probably too crude and underplay the importance of the
long-term changes in northern Gaul as drivers of social and
economic change.

This thesis proposes to study the history of ancient theatre in Roman Gaul. It takes up the long historiographical debate highlighting the cultural and social stakes represented by the first theatres discovered in France. The synthesis that follows deals with the appearance, diffusion and adaptation of theatrical architecture in the north-western provinces of the empire. It is based not only on a corpus of some fifty buildings, but also on the epigraphic and iconographic data associated with them. The study provides a new approach to the cultural landscape of Roman Gaul, in which the theatre is an important place where the cultural, social and religious practices of the city converge.

This dissertation examines how poetic and epistolary works of Sidonius Apollinaris brings light upon christian Gaul identity during late Antiquity, and how this author takes part in defining it. This essay focuses on christian speeches, behaviours and duties towards former culture and especially pagan background, paying peculiar attention to claims of renunciation and actual compromises towards past patterns. This essay firstly tries to paint a picture of fifth-century christianity in Gaul, studying how and how much the religio noua has penetrated gallic provincies, and showing remanence of heterodox and «pagan» believes. It also examines the cultural continuity and discontinuity that occurs during religious transition from laity to conversion and clerical status, for which Sidonius Apollinaris, belonging first to lay social élite, then to thee cleric world, appears like a key-figure. This work especially focuses on the importance of poems-writing to enhance a christian identity but also to express one's nostalgic attachement to the ancient world, its litterature, its culture and its erstwhile pleasures.

▼ Excavations in the Roman Southwest, in what is now Portugal, Spain, and southern France, have brought to light a diverse corpus of sculpture that was displayed in late antique villas, ca. 250-450 CE: monumental reliefs, mythological statues and statuettes, and portraits, of both private individuals and imperial personages. Although the production of some statues is roughly contemporaneous with the late antique villa in which they stood, many pieces were antiques, carved centuries earlier. But the diversity within and across these statuary assemblages, and the concentration of such finds in villas of Hispania and Gaul, have not been given a full treatment in modern scholarship. Rather, sculpture is interpreted generically as evidence for the elite status of a villa owner, leading to problematic assumptions that all statuary collections, and late-Roman villas more broadly, evince an indistinguishable class of “elite” Romans. This dissertation invites readers to reconsider the narrow but well-established definitions of the late antique elite, through analysis of the many differences that are readily apparent among villas and their material assemblages. I argue that material culture can and should be interpreted as evidence of the regionalism which played an important role in late antique society, and thus I treat sculpture as a window into the social practices and peer polity negotiations among villa domini.

▼ This thesis examines primary sources in fifth- and sixth-century Gaul and Spain and finds a surprising lack of concern for ethnicity. Authors in the fifth century expressed concern for the sanctity and safety of the church, their patria, and themselves, but seldom mention any issues that could be related to ethnicity. Even the Arian Christianity of the Goths seems to be of little or no concern. This changes in the middle of the sixth century, when Arian Christianity becomes an overarching issue in Visigothic history. The sources portray nearly every political concern in the second half of the sixth century as one of Arian versus Catholic. Contrary to the idea of a Spain in which Roman- Gothic relations were very important, no other mention of ethnic differentiation appears in the sources even at this time.

▼ The aim of the thesis is to use numismatic evidence to extend the picture of N. Gaul in 350-361 which is available from other sources, and in particular to ascertain details about the usurpation of Magnentius in 350-353, the German invasions of 350-355 and the activities of Julian in 355-361. 103 hoards from Britain, Holland, Belgium, France, W. Germany and Switzerland are analysed, together with 54 site-finds from Belgium and the Rhineland which are compared with 5 site-finds from Britain and 6 from elsewhere in the Roman world. A basic pattern of coin-loss in N. Gaul is identified from the site-finds which, when compared with the pattern found elsewhere, reveals a shortage of coin in N. Gaul in 354-361 as a result of the German invasions. One answer to this shortage was to strike barbarous copies, the distribution of which is seen to correspond to the areas which had survived the invasions or where the scene of Julian's work of reconstruction. In addition a series of hoards, destruction levels and intensively occupied hill-top refuges helps to plot the course of the German invasions. More general matters of coin-circulation are discussed. Various circulation-"pools" are identified and their relationship to one another analysed; coin supply as well as the reasons for and the speed of coin movement are studied. Movements of personnel or troops, as well as administrative links, are identified as the main factors in coin movement in N. Gaul. Particular attention is paid to methods of analysis and to the reliability of the evidence from hoards and site-finds, especially the latter, and ways are determined of recognising distorted or unreliable finds.

Wood is one of the most used raw materials in Roman construction. So timber is a key element of theeconomy and of the environment. If stone is easely discovered during excavations timber leaves a fewremains on archaeological excavations. So interpreting resultsis diffi cult. This PhD attempts to approach the Gallo-Roman timber in various aspects (choice and transport ofwood, technical chain of work and wood condition) from an interdisciplinary approach combininghuman and biological sciences. The innovative part of this work is the realization of an atlas to determine the xylophagous’s traces(galleries and frass) into the archaeological wood. Knowing how to identify these traces is importantto develop new archaeological interpretations: Is it an infestation of alive tree? Is it an infestation duringa storage phase, the use of the building or after the abandonment of the site and during the taphonomicalprocess ? To estimate the duration of the infestation and locate its origin; to document choicesand actions of the builders; and to have a better understanding of the conservation of wood heritage.

The development of agrarian archaeology and the exploration of the economic parts of the rural settlements in Roman Gaul allows today to propose a synthesis on the instrumentum fundi ; the equipment of agricutltural field. From 140 archeological sites of Roman Gaul, 1600 tools and economic buildings were inventoried. The recurring identification of granaries, barns or cowbells, sickles and hammer offers the image of an economy at first turned to the agropastorales activities. However, the craft activities are also present through equipments as tile makers' ovens, hammers, scissors, etc. These activities participate in the maintenance and in the functioning of the domain but sometimes exceed this frame, to envisage a real economic productions. The study of equipments such as manure pits, water mills or the vallus allows to demonstrate an investment of domains in installations and successful tools which we can qualify in certain cases as innovations. These observations allow to go away a little more certain pouncing patterns still current concerning an autarkic and stagnant economy, slowed down by a certain technical delay and by a slavery. The identification and the characterization of equipments send back on the contrary the image of a more open economy, associating different actors who use on their scale of infrastructures and effective tools.

With my dissertation, I aim to examine the role and influence of merchants and transporters in the society of Gallic and Germanic provinces of the Early Roman Empire and the relationships between them and other social agents like local notables. Developing my previous researches about rapports between local élite and Gallic merchants as well as relationships among the latter, and broadening the scope of research, I intend to reply to following question: - How did those who were related to economic activities, including transporters and landowners, participate in trade? Certainly, we are aware of many studies on merchants in the northwestern provinces. However, we can make two remarks. On the one hand, certain scholars give particular importance to the issues related to traders as a social group rather than to relationships between different people, either relationships among merchants or those between them and other social agents. On…

In Eastern Gaul and Germanies, several monuments still standing witness of the quantity and the quality of public buildings in lingon, aeduan, leuquan, sequan, raurac and helvet territory during the Imperial period. Our knowledge of this monumental architecture remains however incomplete, since there is no monograph dealing with those monuments or any lapidary collection catalog. This study, devoted to the city of Mandeure, reveals an ambitious display of monuments from the augustean period to the tetrarchian's. It is based on the fieldwork carried out since 2001, including digging and more specifically prospecting of all kind. Mandeure, the city where the largest sequani civic sanctuary was located, displayed during the imperial period every monumental elements of a classic roman city: theatre, temples, thermae, monumental gates, horrea, etc. The study of the preserved remains in situ and of isolated blocks unables us to re-establish all the differents process of construction, restitution or redevelopment from the medio-augustean era to the severinian's. The study of the decoration programs allowed us aswell to restore a very rich ornemental repertoire. The influence of italian models, probably coming from Northern Italy and the Narbonese Gaul, is a sign of the classic dimension of those realizations. Several set of large Carrare marble capitals constitute…

▼ This dissertation uses the presence of imported pottery from North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean as an indicator of social complexity in the countryside of Mediterranean
Gaul in the Late
Roman period (AD 400 – 600). Examination of the published record of imports shows their distribution to have been widespread in coastal areas. While textual evidence gives an incomplete view of the social context within which such imports were consumed, it does indicate that their presence is associated with a complex set of social behaviors. Additional archaeological indicators, including the growth of villages in the countryside, suggest that consumer demand was a factor in the distribution of imported ceramics throughout Mediterranean
Gaul in the fifth and sixth centuries AD. Transport amphoras and fine tablewares are the most common categories of imports in the region. Although imports have not been found on all rural sites, such vessels appear on a wide range of site types, including villas, villages, caves, and small farms. Textual evidence, particularly the works of Sidonius Apollinaris, Ruricius of Limoges, Caesarius of Arles, and Gregory of Tours, illuminates cultural attitudes towards imports in general, and imported wines in particular. For example, Caesarius decries rural festivities during which excessive drinking was the norm. Ruricius of Limoges complains about his son's participation in more private affairs that included toasts and other entertainments. Sidonius and Gregory held imported wine in high esteem. Rural data suggest that this diversity of attitudes can be associated with the consumption of imports by a broad spectrum of Late
Roman society. While it is not possible to trace the steps that carried imports throughout Mediterranean
Gaul, some of the economic factors that facilitated regional exchange can be explored. Shipwrecks and evidence for small harbors, together with written evidence, demonstrate that imported goods entered the region at multiple points and were transported by land to consumers, either directly or through exchange at markets. Merchants played a part in moving goods around the region and were integrated into the society as carriers of information. The development of large estates worked by landless rural laborers encouraged the growth of villages, and these stand out as loci of demand for imported ceramics.

This PhD thesis aims firstly at providing full documentation about the various lead-glazed potteries reported in the southern Gaul and the Rhone Valley contexts. The inventory has pointed out the existence of six ceramic production groups over a period spending between the end of the first century B.C and the middle of the third century A.D. Ceramics come from Minor Asia, northern Italy, Lyon and Saint-Romain-en-Gal’s workshops, the center of Gaul, central Italy and Capitou's workshop (Hérault). Each ceramic category is the subject of a detailed study. This work is mainly dedicated to lead-glazed ceramics of central Italy. Investigation of consumer contexts leads to re-examine the classification of these ceramics and changes dating. A new typological classification is proposed. Some recurrent forms indicate the existence of a real trade - even reduced - of this type of ceramic in western Mediterranean area during the second and third century. The work done on Lazio's workshops, coupled with archaeometric analyses and recent archaeological discoveries, allowed the precise location of lead-glazed ceramic production centres in the Rome area (Nuovo Mercato Testaccio and Janiculum). This study of lead-glazed potteries from the southern Gaul and the Rhone valley, and more generally of the western Mediterranean basin, provides a better understanding of the production,…

My PhD dissertation contains the detailed study of the pottery finds from the Hungarian excavations of the « Grandes Forges » insula. The insula is located in the oppidum of Bibracte (Le Mont Beuvray, Burgundy). The primary aim of this work is not only to study and to publish the pottery finds of the different occupation layers but also to contribute to the results of the already existing ceramic studies of the oppidum of Bibracte. My work offers a chronology to the « Grandes Forges » insula, an archeological site of great importance where the remains of the roman basilica of Bibracte have been found. Finally my work tries to give a better understanding of the chronology and provides a survey of the pottery finds of the oppidum of Bibracte.

The Lyon-Trier roman road is a major axis of communication, which organises an important part of the road traffic in the Eastern Gaul. It has been the subject, since the 18th century, of many researches, but few studies focused directly in its architecture and its characteristics, and many shares of shade remain. This thesis offers therefore an archaeological examination of this one and of its close environment between Lyon (69) and Metz (57), in order to specify their knowledge. A first part concentrates on the study of the methods of building, the structural features and the course of the road. It reveals the diversity of used technical solutions, as well as a strong adaptability with the various contexts met. Moreover, the use of GIS softwares allowed the realization of an important analysis on travel times along the road. It was also the occasion to carry out spatial modelling operations to find the course of the road in sectors where it remained uncertain. In a second part, the environment of the road is examined to specify our knowledge of the organisation and the evolution of the latter. A particular attention is carried to the funeral area and to military and defensive structures bordering the route, in order to understand their relation with the roman road. The rural occupations are the object of a specific study, which…

▼ Already in the Praefatio of Livy’s work the metaphor
of the importation of foreign influence is apparent. Livy chooses
the annalistic narrative style as the most
Roman form possible and
a self -construction as an author who valorizes traditional
Roman
values. These authorial decisions on the modality of the narrative
are intimately linked to tropology and the manufacturing of the
metaphors and ironies that frame Livy’s text in books 31-45.
Roman
control in Thessaly is asserted by manufacturing communities in its
image. These collapse miserably when the guiding
Roman metaphors
are questioned. The failure of
Roman institutions is depicted as
evidence of the restless nature of the Thessalians. A
representative image of Thessaly is given in the character of
Theoxena, a Thessalian exile who kills herself at a festival of
Aeneas. Her story allows Romans to form an emotional bond with the
Thessalians, although it maintains their essential alterity. The
Galatian campaign of Manlius Vulso shows the dangers of Rome’s
encounter with Hellenism. The Galatians are presented as
Gallic-Greek hybrids who are no longer the great Gallic warriors of
the past. Manlius defeats them, but the anecdotes of extortion and
rape show that the
Roman general is corrupted by his encounter with
Asia. In the end, his methods are indistinguishable from those of
his Galatian opponents. These themes are emphasized in the speech
of the Commissioners against Manlius’ request for a triumph. The
Bacchanalia shows Hellenism as a contamination that spreads through
Italy and infects Rome. Throughout the narrative, Hellenism is
depicted as a virus that threatens Rome. Its source is an ignoble
Greek, and it eventually infects the
Roman nobles. Eventually the
consul reasserts
Roman control in Italy through a bloody purge. The
story shows the close connection of home and abroad or city and
empire. Similar themes of infectious Hellenism are described in the
story of Cato’s censorship and the discovery of Numa’s books on the
Janiculum. These metaphors of Hellenism as an infectious hybridity
culminate in the Macedonian ironies of book 40. The description of
Perseus and Demetrius involves an implicit contrast to the rivalry
of Romulus and Remus. Their antagonism is placed in a ritual
context that invites comparison to
Roman customs. The story conveys
differences between Rome and Macedon, as if to dissolve the
hybridities that threaten
Roman purity. These are particularly
shown as a threat to empire in the career of Marcus Philippus,
whose deceptive foreign policy is depicted as embodying Hellenistic
rather than
Roman values. This reading shows the unity of Livy’s
narrative of the Macedonian wars. Its theoretical use is shown in
an examination of a Livy’s story about a lunar eclipse before the
battle of Pydna and the defeat of Macedonia.

The study of ancient cult places affords remarkable insights into the evolutions that shape the communities using and managing them. Since these are the places where the community and its gods communicate and since that function distinguishes cult places from other parts of the territory, they often are the objects of important investments, both financial and symbolic. They, in turn, become an expression of the identity of the community that gathers there. Cult places are distinct from other space-structuring elements because they manifest, within a certain region, the presence of a given group and help to define this group's territory. This dissertation studies the role of Cisalpine cult places - of Western and Central Transpadana to be exact- in the territorial organization of the peoples then cities, of the plain of Padania and the alpine valleys. The chosen period begins with the start of the Roman domination in the region, at the beginning of the 2nd century B.C., and ends in the 3rd century A.D., when the epigraphic evidences become scarce. The length of this period answers the need for a dyachronic study of the relationships between territory and cult places. The integration of the region in Roman Italy was indeed a slow one and was marked by several administrative experiments. The region's inhabitants first signed treaties of alliance with Rome. They received Latin…

Augustodunum, civitas Aeduorum, roman city founded under the reign of Augustus, was equipped with four roman city gates : the gate of Arroux and the gate of Saint André, both well preserved, the gate of Saint Andoche which sole remaining part is a flanking tower, and the gate of Rome, destroyed long ago.The heart of this study lies in the stratigraphic reading of those gates structure and in thoughts about the building site of Autun’s city gates operating process. Moreover, since the 16th century, antiquaries, travelers and artists have described in many ways their visits to the roman city gates of Autun. These accounts constitute a major documentary collection of written and iconographical sources that had never been studied as a whole before. A classification of written sources was necessary in order to understand the borrowings from previous works. A similar work of critical study has been realized for the iconographical representations of the gates. As an essential complement of the stratigraphic reading of remaining elevations of the gates, the ancient archeological documentation study was indispensable to propose a restoration hypothesis of Augustodunum’s city gates long term history from their construction time to nowadays. The last section of this study aims to locate Autun’s city gates in the series of monumental city gates built in Western Roman Empire between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD. Furthermore, that…

▼ This thesis examines the impact that collegia had
on the economy of the western
Roman Empire. There has been a
tendency amongst scholars to dismiss the economic aspects of
collegia and to think of them instead as primarily social or
religious organisations. This thesis demonstrates, however, that
some of the earliest work on collegia was affected by flawed
methodology and that this has in turn affected a good deal of the
subsequent scholarship, undermining economic analyses to a certain
extent. As a secondary research goal, this thesis is therefore
aimed at re-examining the body of scholarship that has gone before
it in light of modern research methods and in hopes of drawing a
line under many of the debates that continue to be given too much
prominence in the literature. In examining the economic impact of
the collegia, the thesis draws on modern economic theory and
especially on a Neo-Institutional Economic theoretical framework to
analyse the epigraphic and, latterly, the papyrological evidence of
associations in the
Roman Empire. The conclusions demonstrate that
many of the collegia in the west did have a clear impact on their
local economies, despite this not always being immediately
discernible in the extant epigraphic evidence. By also examining
other types of evidence, namely papyri and the archaeological
evidence from Ostia, however, we are able to significantly enhance
our understanding of the collegia.
