The aim of this research project was to study effectiveness and safety of phenprocoumon-therapy with a special emphasis put on drug-drug interactions and clinical outcome.rnAt first an activity oriented interaction guidance regarding phenprocoumon-therapy, based on known literature and databases was developed.
Rodent populations are responsible for many economic and health problems. For these reasons different rodents species are called pests and particularly brown rats, house mice and black rats. Their populations need to be managed. This management involves health and environmental measures strictly necessary but is also based on the use of toxic chemicals. As part of chemical control, the AVKs are currently the most commonly used molecules. These AVKs inhibit blood coagulation and are the cause of fatal bleeding. The pharmacological target of AVK is the VKOR enzymatic activity, encoded by the vkorc1 gene. However, the intensive use of AVKs since the 1950s has led to the development of resistance to these molecules. The target resistance has been well studied in the brown rat, but little is known in the house mouse and the black rat

▼ The purpose of this study is to determine the roles of internal and external audits in corporate
governance structure. This study was conducted in ten hotels in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital.
In this research, the stratified sampling method was used in attaining the sample size by
concentrating on the various units of the selected Hotels for the study. This enabled the researcher
to highlight differences between groups in a population which ensured different views obtained on
the subject matter and also allowed for 100% response rate. The research design used was mixed
method. Qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the
Social Science (SPSS). Chi-Square Test was performed to establish whether there is a relationship
among the variables understudied with a null hypothesis of corporate governance which is
independent of internal and external audit. The results of the analysis show that the significances
of these tools are clear as these tools coordinate in providing assurance, enhancing and improving
internal control systems, risk assessments and management, enhancing financial reporting,
ensuring funds are spent as expected as well as enhancing good corporate governance by providing
oversight, foresight and insight roles in relation to compliance to law and regulations both internal
and external. It was also found that, even though management is aware of these significance and
the expectations of stakeholders, they are reluctant to acquire and use these services. The internal
and external audits as demonstrated in this study are two other tools that can help to protect these
investments when acquired and allowed to function as expected. If management is reluctant of
acquiring these services, it could me that either, they are not fully aware of the significance these
tools bring or they intentionally do not want to use them because of their own personal benefits.

The interest in antioxidants has increased considerably in recent years as molecules that reduce lipid peroxidation may minimize or inhibit the oxidative damage caused to DNA, proteins and carbohydrates. Flavonoids, a group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in the plant kingdom, have properties of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-allergic and anti-tumor, in addition to possessing antioxidant and free radicals to inactivate them and prevent oxidative damage at cell level. It is believed that the biological activity of flavonoids is due to its antioxidant properties. Due to the great importance given today to free radicals and antioxidants, there is a strong demand for analytical techniques able to identify and quantify these two groups of compounds. This work describes the study of anti-radical power of the flavonoids kaempferol, fisetin, quercetin, quercitrin, myricetin and rutin against UV radiation and HO radical. The method used was based on artificial photochemical generation of HO radicals by photolysis of H2O2. The flavonoids studied were photpstable towards UV radiation and efficient in the fight against HO radical. The flavonoid quercitrin was the most active compound, followed by rutin, kaempferol, fisetin, quercetin and myricetin. The proposed methodology allows for quantitative comparison of the antiradical…

Neuroinflammation is a key part of the physiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases and is an interesting target in their treatment. In this PhD work, we studied the effects of two potentially anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective molecules, hemin and C16, in an in vivo rat model of neuroinflammation by intrastriatal injection of quinolinic acid (QA). We showed that heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) induction by hemin has deleterious effects whereas inhibition of the protein kinase RNA activated (PKR) by C16 treatment induced neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Concurrently, we evaluated longitudinal evolution of neuroinflammation in our model. Results showed the kinetic of the inflammatory phenomena; the ability of cerebral tissue to recover integrity and the capability of this model to evaluate potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory drugs in a long-time study.

The study uses qualitative method and the theory of service performance to understand this phenomenon. Data from interviews of 30 people including 15 people who are civil servants of the Ho Chi Minh City Inspectorate and 15 citizens who make the complaints in Ho Chi Minh City Inspectorate. At the core of research, it is found that service quality affects the complainant's satisfaction and the performance of the administrative service as well as the administrative organization. There are three virtual factors affecting the service quality and citizen’s satisfaction, including the interaction between civil servants and complainants, the service outcome and the head’s accountability. In addition to this, environmental factors do not impact on the quality of complaint’s settlement in Ho Chi Minh City Inspectorate, while it is considered as a significant factor in assessing the quality of services perceived by customers or private services.

Since the Economic Reform in 1986, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and its center (corresponding to the ancient Saigon) have in particular experienced a boom in construction, in which the private sector plays the key role. In addition, the city of Saigon, now part of the metropolis of south of Vietnam, has a rich urban structure formed by methods of construction which result from an accumulation of various urban cultures, each of them leaving material traces - a complex urban space now challenged by intense movement of construction which the Vietnamese planning institutions with their tools (plans and urban projects, legislative and administrative documents, urban programs) have not been effective in controlling. By studying the urban change of this space through its actors and vectors, this research leads us to a comparison of planning tools and their effects on the typo-morphological transformations introduced by private initiatives in the center of HCMC, through its history of urban construction since the colonial period until today

▼ Abstract Introduction: Previous research showed that comorbidities that are common in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are anxiety and depression. Furthermore, stress can be associated with more depressive symptoms. Patients suffering from depression along with an additional medical condition, tend to have more severe symptoms in both depression and their medical illness. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate depression, anxiety, and stress among COPD patients, and also to examine if there was a difference in levels of depression, anxiety and stress between genders, and between COPD patients and patients with COPD together with comorbid chronic condition. Method: This study had a descriptive and cross-sectional design with a quantitative method. The data collection took place at a respiratory ward at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Sixty two COPD patients, both men and women, participated voluntarily by answering a questionnaire. Virginia Henderson´s nursing theory was used as a theoretical framework. Data analysis was conducted through using the statistical program SPSS. Result: More than half of the COPD patients (88.8%) presented symptoms of depression, 93.5% presented symptoms of anxiety, and 54.8% presented symptoms of stress. There was a statistical significance between genders among COPD patients in anxiety, where all female participants (100%) showed extremely severe levels of anxiety. In levels of extreme severity, both patients with only COPD diagnosis and patients with COPD and comorbid chronic condition presented symptoms in both depression and anxiety, but not in levels of stress. Conclusion: COPD patients in Ho Chi Minh City presented high levels of depression and anxiety. In addition, levels of stress were present, although not as high as depression and anxiety among this patient group. More information concerning psychological distress needs to be offered by healthcare professionals to COPD patients. Further research in this field is desirable.
Metod:…

▼ Parkinsonâs disease (PD), after Alzheimerâs disease, is one of most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases, affects almost 0.2% of the world population. Till date, few pharmacological agents have been isolated that effectively inhibit the progression of PD; although these agents have been proven to be effective in providing symptomatic relief against PD, they have also been reported to cause undesirable side effects that result in long-term oxidative damage. In the present study, PWY21 and PWY29 were isolated from marine organisms. They significantly reduced 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y). The cellular neuroprotective effect of PWY21 and PWY29 were tested in 6-OHDA-treated SH-SY5Y cells, wherein neuroprotection is mediated through modulation of oxidative stress. Moreover, we also found PWY21 and PWY29 also attenuated 6-OHDA-induced motor behavior dysfunction in zebrafish. Therefore, we conclude that PWY21 and PWY29 may be promising candidates for the treatment of PD

▼ Transplantation is the optimal form of therapy for
patients with end-stage liver disease; however, the use of organs
with hepatic steatosis is often associated with increased risks for
poor function and graft loss. In addition, ischemia reperfusion
(IR) injury leads to cellular damage that can culminate in
functional impairment and loss of graft. Furthermore, IR injury is
aggravated by pre-existing steatosis and may involve additional
mechanisms and mediators of cellular damage. Current models to
study IR in vitro are not well defined and may overlook periods of
injury that are involved in transplantation. In this thesis, I
present an in vitro model for IR injury that includes multiple
phases of injury and leads to the upregulation of heme oxygenase-1
(
HO-1), and possibly enhances the expression of matrix
metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). As graft
HO-1 expression correlates
positively with reduced injury, but MMP-9 expression is associated
with increased injury, I therefore examined the utility of in vitro
gene therapies to affect the expression of these proteins. We
conclude that the in vitro model of ischemia and reperfusion is a
promising tool to study the cellular response to IR and may provide
a platform for the development of future therapies which could have
clinical applications.

▼ This thesis focuses on the narrative functions of
motifs in Peter Ho-sun Chan’s love trilogy films on drifting
Chinese people since the 1980s. The examination of object/setting
motifs in Chapter One contributes to the understanding of
character-traits. Chapter Two especially discusses the use of
popular songs in Chan’s love trilogy by analyzing their explicit
meaning conveyed by the lyrics, which is consistent with episodes
of the plot, and the implicit and symptomatic meanings behind these
songs, which actually arouse the collective memories among the
audiences. In Chapter Three the study on the commonly used motifs
throughout the films reflects upon the emotional life of various
drifting Chinese people as a whole. By virtue of ideological film
studies, this close analysis of the motifs discovers the idealism
vs. pragmatism binary opposition constructed by Peter Chan and his
consistent concern about the humanism when portraying drifting
Chinese people.

▼ Background: Adolescent pregnancy is considered to be high risk. The psychosocial challenges of these adolescents are enormous. This study therefore seeks to explore the psychosocial challenges of pregnant adolescents in the Ho Municipal area of the Volta Region in order to help inform policy on the appropriate psychosocial interventions. The scope of this study focused predominantly on the menace of adolescent pregnancy in the Ho Municipal area in the Volta Region of Ghana. Therefore, the central objective of the study was to explore the psychosocial challenges of pregnant adolescents in the Ho Municipal area of the Volta Region.
Methodology: The study is purely qualitative and relies primarily on literature review and interviews for data collection and analyses.
Results: Findings from the study revealed that the major causes of teenage pregnancy in the Ho Municipal area includes poverty, influence of alcohol and drugs on sexual behavior, influence childhood environment, the lack of education on safe sex or contraceptive usage, family structure and its influences on sexual behavior of adolescents and peer pressure. It was also revealed that the psychosocial effects of adolescent pregnancy in the Ho Municipal area in the Volta Region of Ghana includes depression, anxiety, anger and violence, sadness, lack of community and family support, isolation, lack of proper health and stigmatization and discrimination.
Conclusion: Pregnant adolescents in the Ho Municipality encounter various psychosocial challenges. Multiple factors such as poverty, alcohol and drug abuse and lack of adequate knowledge on the use of contraceptive contribute significantly to the menace in the study area. It is therefore imperative that working strategies be implemented to reduce
unplanned adolescent pregnancies, and to support pregnant adolescents in realizing their right to continue with their education, during pregnancy and following childbirth.

▼ Men who had prostatectomy are confronted with several negative health issues, some of which include pain, fatigue, sexual and urinary dysfunctions among others. The purpose of the study was to explore the wellbeing of men post prostatectomy in the Ho municipality in the Volta region of Ghana. The Quality of Life Model Applied to Cancer by Betty Ferrell (1995) was the organizing framework for this study. A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was employed. A purposive sampling technique was used and data was saturated with 13 participants. Data were collected with a semi-structured interview guide. All interviews were audio taped and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. During the study, anonymity and confidentiality were ensured. The four themes specified by the model; the physical, social, psychological and spiritual well-being of cancer survivors were identified. Emerging themes were spousal support, complementary and alternative sources of treatment and life satisfaction. Most of the men experienced body pain, sleep disruption, fatigue, constipation and impaired bladder control. Their social wellbeing was affected by isolation, financial burden, secrecy, sexual dysfunctions and employment challenges. Psychologically, the men expressed fears and anxiety, experienced uncertainty and were depressed. Spiritually, men sought meaning to their illness by questioning God, they became more religious, and had hope that they will be better. They enjoyed tremendous support from their spouses. Men who survived prostate cancer resorted to complementary and alternative sources of treatment in the quest of getting a panacea for their illness. It was recommended that men be counselled and educated.
In Conclusion, prostatectomy precipitated a lot of physical, psychological, social and spiritual lifelong challenges to men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

▼ Performance of public employees become the most concern in the implementation of innovation in Vietnam recently because bad performance or less motivation are the results getting from almost surveys or researches. While public employees which are considered as the precious resource is the premier factor of innovation in Vietnam, such undesired results indicate that it is necessary to find out the reasons as well as the methods dealing with such problem. Issues relating to motivation have been researched meticulously. Among plenty of researches, choosing the one to apply for public sector in Vietnam requires a wide range of serious concerns including culture and specific environment of Vietnam. At inception, Maslow s Hierarchy of needs is basic source of the thesis. Moreover, in the process of seeking direction for the thesis, Nevis s research about hierarchy of need of Chinese can be considered due to certain compatibility with specific conditions in Ho Chi Minh city where the thesis chosen to study. Based on both on Maslow s Hierarchy of needs and Nevis s Chinese hierarchy of need, this research compares five basic factors affecting to motivation of public employees including social needs, physiological needs, safety needs, esteemed needs, self-actualization needs in order to find out which one is more important than the others. The thesis uses SPSS software to analyze data collecting from the survey of 200 public employees in Ho Chi Minh City. The findings from studying indicate that unlike the Nevis s results about the four-factor model in China or the five-factor model of Maslow in Western countries, the appropriate model for public sector in Ho Chi Minh city concludes six factors and the order of such factors is totally different from the previous researches. Although such findings should be continually researched in different ways, the study attempts to significantly contribute on improving managerial methods of public managers in the innovation process.

▼ Ho Chi Minh city is the center of economy, culture and education of Vietnam. The goal of Ho Chi Minh government is to enhance citizen satisfaction to gain objective of administrative reform. However, so far the percentage of citizen satisfy with public services is very low. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of service quality as well as transparency on citizen satisfaction in the public administration sector in Ho Chi Minh City. The survey was distributed to citizens who used public administration services at 4 public administrative organizations in Ho Chi Minh City including People's Committee of District 1; People's Committee of Dakao Ward, District 1 (represent urban area ); People's Committee of Govap District and People's Committee of Ward 6, Govap District (represent rural area). Total 240 questionnaires were sent and 200 questionnaires were collected (80% response rates).
Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling were conducted to analyze the data. Results indicated that service quality significantly related with citizen satisfaction. Four factors which constitute service quality affected citizen satisfaction including Responsiveness, Empathy, Assurance and Reliability. In particular, responsiveness was the strongest affecting factor which brought the highest satisfaction level of citizens. The findings can be used as a guide for Ho Chi Minh city government to enhance citizen satisfaction. Besides, the result of data analysis also showed that transparency did not relate with citizen satisfaction in the public administration sector in Ho Chi Minh city.

▼ International tourism has become one of the largest and most vital economic sectors of the global economy driving huge flows of people, commodities, and capital. Tourism has been and continues to be an important foreign exchange earner to many countries in South East Asia and Vietnam is no exception. The aim of this article is to trace the factors for visiting Ho Chi Minh city, the largest and fastest growing city of Vietnam, image of Ho Chi Minh city as a tourism destination and competitiveness of Ho Chi Minh city as a tourism destination among foreign tourists to Ho Chi Minh city. A survey was used to obtain data randomly from 200 foreign tourists visiting Ho Chi Minh city. From the results, uniqueness and self-connection are extremely important for choosing Ho Chi Minh city as a foreign city for long-haul travel. Ho Chi Minh city is at the top of the list of top five city for long-haul travel in South East Asia. Hospitality in Ho Chi Minh city was better and excellent than many long-haul cities for tourists, followed by natural environment. From the overall implications of this study, it could be concluded that a strong relationship between government, tourism industry players, local authorities, private agencies and businesses should be fostered to ensure that tourists needs, especially foreign tourists, are fulfilled. It is a known fact that foreign tourists have a high taste. Therefore the various tourism industry players need to work hand in hand to improve all types of services provided to the foreign tourists.

▼ The objective of this study is to examine the connection between the service quality and patient satisfaction and loyalty in Ho Chi Minh City public hospitals. This research is about to determine the dimensions of service quality, especially in health care sector. The most concentration is on the relationship between service qualities regarding to physical environment, interaction quality and outcome quality relating to patient satisfaction, patient loyalty in the context of public hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City. Subjects of the research are in-patients who have experience in health care service in these hospitals.
This research is conducted in ten hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City only such as Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, People's Hospital 115, People's Hospital Gia Dinh, Trung Vuong Hospital, Binh Dan Hospital, Hung Vuong Hospital (obstetrics, gynecology), Children's Hospital 1, Children's Hospital 2, Tu Du Hospital (obstetrics, gynecology) and Oncology Hospital.
The results verify significant relationship among sub dimensions of physical environment quality and interaction quality (service quality) and two service performance measures: patient satisfaction, patient loyalty. Some factors that reflect the satisfaction - loyalty connection in the public health services are high switching cost, accessibility and lack of decent private healthcare services. Acquirement of long-term patient satisfaction, loyalty and image can be made possible with continuous monitoring of interaction quality and physical environment quality.

▼ For over 150 years, the city of Wisconsin Dells played host to tourists from all over the American Midwest. In the late 1990s and early 2000s it officially became rebranded as the "Waterpark Capital of the World." Before the indoor waterparks the tourism scene rested on the natural landscape, and with it, the Native American
Ho-Chunk population and their displays of cultural performance. How has this influenced the
Ho-Chunk Nation and Wisconsin Dells communities as they exist today? I argue that tourist spaces served as contact zones and Native gathering places that paved the way for future
Ho-Chunk economic development and allowed for a shared history of interaction with non-Native locals. This had significant impacts on
Ho-Chunk political sovereignty and the identity construction of non-Native local residents. This history is essential for understanding the current viewpoints of community members and the desire to bring back the Stand Rock Indian Ceremonial.

▼ A hemoxigenáz-1 (
HO-1) enzim a kardiovaszkuláris kórképek elleni védekező mechanizmusok szempontjából különös figyelemnek örvend, azonban a
HO-1 induktorok hatását a
Eredményeink alapján a legpotensebb

In addition, the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen is highest (≥8%) in underdeveloped countries including Ghana (with a prevalenceof 12.3%). Meanwhile,Hepatitis B preventive measures are not routinely practiced by some health care workersin the country. Theincreasedrisk of infection among health care workers is due to theirexposure to blood and bodily fluidsbecause of the nature of their work. However, there is a paucity of data in Ghana regarding healthcare workers'practice of preventive measures concerning HBV infection.
Objective: This study assessed the practices relating to hepatitis B infection prevention and its determinants among health care workers in the Ho Municipality, Ghana.
Method: The study adopted a cross-sectional design using a quantitative method in a hospital-based survey. A structured questionnaire and an observational checklist were used to collect data. Three hundred and seventy-two (372) health care workers participated in the study over a period of eight weeks. Data collected was entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analysed with Stata version 15.
Results: Findings from the study revealed that only 16.12% of the health care workers followed standard practice of prevention measures for hepatitis B. Factors associated with the proper practice of prevention measures for hepatitis B among health care workers were determined by the department the participants were working in, and availability of dustbin linings (AOR: 3.41, 95% CI: 1.09-10.73, p=0.036). Findings revealed that the health care workers had a high knowledge (69.6%) of the hepatitis B virus infection. However, there was a disconnect between the knowledge of the hepatitis B virus infection, and the practice of prevention measures for the hepatitis B virus infection. The majority (83.52%) of health care workers have however been vaccinated against the infection. There was high availability of PPE (85.35%), handwashing facilities (97.8 %), and dustbin liners (72.16 %)
Conclusion: The study concludes that less than half of the participants in the study associated knowledge with proper practices. Also, the high availability of standard precautionary logistics did not translate into proper practice of HBV infection prevention measures among the health care workers. This urgently calls for continuous training of health care workers on infection prevention practices.

▼ The United States is becoming more racially diverse, and it is imperative that PK-12 teachers receive high-quality professional development in diversity and inclusion issues to better understand the students whom they teach. The National Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) Project has been a prominent diversity training opportunity for PK-12 educators since 1987 and has been in operation in Black River Falls (BRF) since 2012. BRF is a small town in West-Central Wisconsin and is the context for this hermeneutic phenomenological study. There are three sub-communities discussed in this dissertation: The city of BRF, the BRF School District (BRFSD), and the
Ho-Chunk Nation. Approximately 23% of the students in the BRFSD are Native American (mostly enrolled members of the
Ho-Chunk Nation) and nearly 100% of the faculty are White, which means that the faculty is not necessarily representative of the students whom they teach. This study discovered that voluntary participation in BRF SEED produced transformative results in teacher participants and deepened their awareness of diversity issues. Teachers interviewed for this study described a greater willingness to infuse their curriculum with diversity-related content and reported having a better understanding of their
Ho-Chunk neighbors as a result of participating in BRF SEED.

▼ Ho Chi Minh City has to deal with severe flooding in the rainy season. To prevent the city from this flooding, MARD set up plan 1547. The main idea of the plan is to build a ring dike around HCMC in combination with several movable tidal barriers. One of these barriers is the Muong Chuoi Barrier. In this report a conceptual design of the Muong Chuoi Barrier is made. The structure consists of a movable tidal barrier and a navigation lock, both able to bear the water in both directions. The navigation lock provides a possibility of vessels passing when the barrier is closed. In the preliminary research information is gained about the location properties, the soil conditions, the hydraulic conditions and the shipping class, which results in a basis of design. An analysis of diffrent gate and foundation types give a number of possible alternatives. Vietnamese unit prices are investigated and used to make a proper cost estimation of the different alternatives. The most important requirements from the basis of design are: the normative high water level, the water discharge of the Muong Chuoi river, the shipping class, the number of vessels passing every day and minimum life span of the structure. After a selection between all the possible solutions, that follow from the preliminary research, four alternatives are worked out, which are a combination between two gate types, a lifting gate and a radial gate, and two foundation types, a caisson foundation and foundation with combi wall and underwater concrete. By means of structural calculations, the quantities of the materials used are determined. Based on these results and the unit prices from the preliminary research, a cost estimation of every alternative is made. In the multi criteria analysis for the barrier, the most important factor are the costs, its weighing factor is 50%. Other criteria are: maintenance, constructability, usability and environmental impact. After the multi criteria analysis, the best alternative is alternative D, the radial gate in combination the combi wall foundation. The study of alternatives for the navigation lock focuses only on the lock head. Again a selection is made between the possible solutions that follow from the preliminary research. Four types are selected for the multi criteria analysis: mitre gates, single leaf gates, lifting gates and rolling or sliding gates. One of the most important criteria for the navigation lock are cost (35%). Also the usability (35%) is considered to be important, in particular the locking cycle and reliability. After the multi criteria analysis, the best alternative is the single leave gate. A conceptual design for the lock is created. The inner dimensions of the lock chamber are determined, the structural elements are designed and an structural calculation of the single leave gate is made.

▼ This study is directed at the problem of an apparent contradiction within the theory of Chinese painting, between insistence on the importance of individuality in painting on the one hand, by Chinese critics, and on the other their veneration of traditional ways and means, subjects, styles, and the criteria used in judging excellence.
Since this dichotomy is clearly embodied in the single most important document within the theory of Chinese painting, Hsieh Ho's Six Principles (the First and Sixth in particular), I have structured the first three parts of the thesis around an evaluation of Hsieh Ho's reputation, and the literal meaning of the First and Sixth principles, respectively. The method is essentially that of literary criticism, tempered, hopefully, by a familiarity with many of the great masterpieces of Chinese painting.
In the last two sections I moved from an evaluation of the values and customs of the social class which supported the art of painting, back to the theory itself. Within the scholar-official class, as a social entity, a similar apparent contradiction exists between the importance placed on individual freedom and talent in living, and the recognized authority of fixed tradition. Since this dichotomy is embodied within the apparently conflicting ways of Confucianism and Taoism, I have built my argument around these two socio-religious traditions. The method used is one of socio-philosophical analysis and interpretation.
From a consideration of Confucianism and Taoism a set of relatively a-historical constants emerges: for Confucianism a moral imperative and the practice of calligraphy; for Taoism a metaphysical imperative and the practice of meditation. In the great literary and artistic tradition of China, a fifth constant exists, shared by the Confucian and the Taoist mind alike.
My formulation of these constants and evaluation of their inter-relationships, and interdependence, is almost completely philosophical – the intuitive and deductive construction of a resolution which seems to adequately explain all of the important issues. My actual presupposition that the conflict (between the individual talent and tradition) is illusory comes, foremost, from my sense of complete unity in the painting, and, secondly, from the fact that the Chinese themselves were never particularly aware of any such threat to the production of masterpieces of uncompromised spiritual significance. In the "Introduction" I suggest that the illusion of conflict or compromising conflict within the field-theory of Chinese painting is, very likely, based on a defensive Western cultural-egotism, and the superstition that the Orient has always negated the individual spirit while we in the new West alone know its true value. Once we emphathize with the Chinese scholar-painters, the illusion melts away.
The conclusion I reach is that the apparently opposing and conflicting elements are in fact complimentary and supportive, within the overall unity of the Chinese spirit. However, a certain irony must be admitted in that an…

▼ This thesis is an examination of Nguyen Ai Quoc's (Ho Chi Minh's) role in transmitting communism to Vietnam in the period between the First and Second World Wars. As the Third International (Comintern) provided the theory and much of the organizational support for this task, it is also a study of the Comintern's changing policies towards revolution in colonial countries. It has grown out of research in the Moscow archives of the Comintern, which first became available to researchers in late 1991-1992. It also makes extensive use of the French colonial archives at the Centre d'Archives d'Outre-Mer in Aix-en-Provence. This study begins with Nguyen Ai Quoc's appearance in Paris in 1919, when he lobbied the Paris Peace Conference for greater Vietnamese freedom and was then drawn into the political world of the French left. It follows his first contacts with the Comintern in Moscow (1923- 1924), through his two-year sojourn in Canton during the Communist-Guomindang United Front, when he established the first training courses for Vietnamese revolutionaries. Chapters IV and V cover his return to Asia in mid-1928, his founding of the Vietnamese Communist Party in 1930, and the 1930-31 insurrectionary movement in Vietnam. Chapter Six deals with his Jime 1931 arrest and his long period of political inactivity in Moscow, from mid-1934 until the autumn of 1938. The final chapter covers his return to southern China and his efforts to regain his influence in the Vietnamese communist movement from 1939 to 1941. The thesis concludes that, with the benefit of the documentary evidence now available, it is necessary to readjust the perception of Nguyen Ai Quoc as an influential communist during his early political career. Initially he received little financial support from Moscow and he never became a member of the Comintern Executive Committee. Nor did he exist entirely within the world of the Comintern. Although the latter was an essential force in the creation of Vietnamese communism, there were other factors which shaped its growth, including family and regional ties, as well as Chinese and French left-wing politics.

As witnessed by recent Ebola, Chikungunya or Influenza (H1N1) breakthroughs, emerging an re-emerging viruses are still responsible for major health crisis. Efficient and safe antiviral therapies are thus highly needed. Over the past decades, nucleoside analogs have lead the fight against manyof those pathogens, including: HIV, HCV or HSV. Recently, C-nucleoside analogs bearing a quaternary anomericposition have emerged as promising antiviral drugs against these «new» viruses. There are still very few ways to access to such motif in the literature. In the course of this PhD thesis, collaborating with Janssen laboratories, we have developped new strategies to reach these originals scaffolds, relying on C-nucleosides chemistry. Notably, we have synthesized a familly ofanalogs, having a 1,2,3-triazole and a cyano group attheanomeric position, exploiting “Click” chemistry and metallo-catalyzed C-Ccouplings.

▼ Middle managers are tasked with supporting new initiatives and change, while at the same time experiencing challenges in making sense of the strategic initiative and giving sense to other members of the organisation. This dissonance experienced by middle managers tasked with change informed the topic of the research. The current study explores the strategising of middle managers through sensemaking and sensegiving during a strategic initiative in a single case study within a financial services provider in South Africa. The study seeks to examine the phenomenon through the theoretical lenses of the strategy-as-practice perspective, middle manager perspective and the theory of sensemaking and sensegiving. The study adopted a qualitative-exploratory design which involved collecting data through semi-structured in-depth individual faceto-face interviews. Data was analysed through coding, using thematic analysis and the categorisation and interpretation of common themes. Three main themes emerged from the study which were categorised as middle manager dissonance, middle manager sensemaking and sensegiving actions and middle manager practices in sensemaking and sensegiving. These themes offer insight into middle manager strategising, sensemaking and sensegiving during a new strategic initiative. The study concludes that when the organisation introduced a new strategic initiative middle managers’ knowledge was disturbed. These middle managers experienced various emotions as they were trying to make sense of the changes while giving sense to other members of the organisation. Findings confirmed delays in implementation due to lack of understanding of the change by middle managers. The study also concludes that although middle managers experienced challenges initially, they moved into a task of “selling” the new initiative through sensemaking and sensegiving. Middle managers got involved in various practices such as team discussions and information sharing sessions as they make sense and give sense to other team members. Through this interaction, middle managers aligned others and created common understanding while they influence them through sensegiving. Findings of the current study may offer valuable knowledge to organisations in the financial sector and practitioners tasked with
v
new strategic initiatives.
