超高エネルギー宇宙線(4×1019eV以上)は2.7Kの宇宙マイクロ波背景放射(CMB)との衝突により、Δ+(1232)共鳴状態をつくる。デルタ粒子Δ+は強い相互作用(10‐24s)でn+π+または、p+π0へ崩壊する。π+はμ+とνμに崩壊し、超高エネルギーニュートリノ(UHEν)が生成される。この反応が起きるのはΔ+の生成断面積が大きく、また質量が陽子の1.3倍と軽いからである。この現象はGreisen, Zatsepiin, Kuzmin によって提案され、超高エネルギーの宇宙線は宇宙空間を走行する間にエネルギーを失うことを予言した(GZKカットオフ)。この予言は近年実験的に確認されつつある。超高エネルギー宇宙線とCMBが共に測定され、GZKカットオフも確認されつつあるためUHEνが生成されることは確実視されている。上記の過程により超高エネルギー宇宙線が宇宙空間の至るところで存在すれば、UHEνも宇宙空間の至るところで生成されて地球に飛来していると考えられる。しかしながら超高エネルギー宇宙線は飛来頻度が非常に低いために、UHEνの頻度も非常に低い。よってこのUHEνを検出するためには人工的な検出媒質の質量では不十分である。本研究の目的は自然界に存在する巨大検出媒質を用いて、宇宙由来のUHEνを検出することである。UHEνが入射した検出媒質中で相互作用を起こすと粒子シャワーを発生する。UHEνのエネルギーが検出媒質の温度上昇を引き起こし、検出媒質が誘電体である場合にはその誘電率を変化させる。電波減衰長の長い誘電体を検出媒質としてレーダー電波を放射することにより、誘電率の変化した部分とその周囲との境界面付近でレーダー電波が反射される(電波反射効果)。これによりレーダーを用いることでUHEν相互作用時の温度上昇が電波反射の変化として検出することが可能である。電波反射効果は高エネルギー加速器研究機構放射光科学研究施設アドバンスドリング(KEK/PF-AR)におけるX線照射による電波反射実験によって我々のグループが発見した。この現象に基づきUHEνのレーダー検出法を詳細に研究する。レーダー法による検出のアプローチでは、フラックスの非常に小さいUHEνを検出するために検出媒質には巨大な質量が必要とされる。電波減衰長が長い岩塩鉱や南極氷床においてレーダー法は検出用のレーダーアンテナを媒質表面に設置することで電波減衰長の深さだけ有効検出体積を確保出来るため、UHEν検出で非常に有用な方法である。本研究では岩塩及び氷充填同軸管を用いて誘電体の温度上昇と電波反射率の相関を日本原子力研究開発機構高崎量子応用研究所1号加速器の2MeV電子ビームを照射することで測定した。電子ビーム照射前は電波が同軸管の開放端面で全反射するため、このまま測定すると電子ビーム照射時の温度変化及びそれに伴う誘電率変化による10-6のオーダーという微小な電波反射測定は不可能である。このため電子ビーム照射前の電波反射信号を逆位相の波形と合成し測定回路内で零にする零位法を用いて実験を行った。これにより電子ビーム照射による温度変化に伴う電波反射率の変化を測定した。また零位法測定システムを電子ビーム照射中も稼働させることにより、振幅・位相変化を追尾しながら記録することが可能となった。これにより従来電波反射率をスペクトラムアナライザなどの装置で振幅のみを測定していたが、ベクトル量としての電波反射波を測定することに成功した。この電子ビーム照射実験の測定結果から、岩塩と氷の電波反射効果の違いを検討し、レーダー法検出器のための検出媒質としての優劣を議論した。
