▼ Concrete and asphalt are the most common materials used in permanent roadway pavements. Roadways are also constructed for temporary use in the resource industry, for remote site construction, and for disaster relief. Although temporary roads have been used for almost as long as permanent ones, little research has been done to optimize their design in view of their relatively short service lives or to investigate the advantages of constructing them with reusable materials or employing structural systems that require minimal subgrade preparation. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to conduct research to determine the feasibility of a reusable, modular road plate system requiring minimal preparation of the subgrade.
This thesis presents a literature review, summarizing the currently available products that perform a similar function and the methods currently available to design such products, including terramechanics and foundation design. Alternative concept designs for a modular road plate system are then introduced. Following this, a simple structural steel plate system is designed to resist vertical, traffic-induced loads using several methods. Specifically, an equivalent thickness method and finite element (FE) analysis are employed. Different loading conditions, soil conditions, and plate assemblies (i.e. boundary conditions) are compared. The different loading conditions include: single and multi-wheel loading, and centre versus edge loading of the plate. The different modelled plate assemblies include: single plates, four plates assembled with fixed connections, and four plates assembled with hinged connections. Structural steel plates are considered in the FE analysis study, in order to develop the design methodology, prior to applying it to the other materials or structural systems. Soil properties and panel thicknesses are studied covering a broad range of conditions under which temporary roadways may be built. Thirty scenarios are created from five soil types and six panel thicknesses. With the different loading and boundary conditions investigated, a total of 120 scenarios are analyzed in total, using several different FE models.
The results from the FE analysis studies show that there is a significant difference between hinged and fixed connected panels, and that these different boundary conditions can be considered by modelling a single plate that is centre loaded (to represent a multi-plate system with fixed plate connections) or a single plate that is edge loaded (to represent a multi-plate system with hinged plate connections). The results of this research in general provide a practical framework for developing a modular road plate system constructed using any material or structural system under a range of soil and loading conditions.

Tire-road friction is one of the most important parameters regarding the safety of vehicles under slippery road conditions. Road surface texture is currently evaluated using several devices. In Brazil, the British Pendulum and the sand-patch method are most frequently used to measure microtexture and macrotexture, respectively. They were used in the research reported in this dissertation that aimed at verifying texture evolution with time/traffic on different types of pavement wearing courses. Thus, micro and macrotexture values were monthly measured in surveys carried out during one year in Brazilian Federal Road BR- 290/RS. Collected data allowed defining performance trends regarding micro and macrotexture of asphalt and Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements. The models here proposed might be used as auxiliary tools in Pavement Management Systems (PMS) to estimate the time when a given rehabilitation action is necessary to assure vehicle and drivers safety. Results analysis showed that the surveyed pavements present adequate tire-road friction, when evaluated by the International Friction Index (IFI) which combines pavements macro and microtexture. In addition, a model relating results of the sand-patch method to drainability results is proposed. Such model allows the estimation of the IFI based on values of water inflow…

▼ In Ethiopia the number and type of traffic increases and the change is alarming. This leads to the construction of
road infrastructures which needs economical and safe design of roads. Nowadays, flexible
pavement roads and surface failure before the expected design period has become a critical issue in our country.
The design in our country is based on the prevailing condition of soil and materials report using the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA)
Pavement Design Manual where the results obtained will be compared with that of the AASHTO Structural Design
Pavement manual. Finally, the thickness obtained using both design guides will be compared. And it is known that
pavement thickness design in our country is manual based.
Manual design method has a drawback in avoiding human mistake, error and doing many alternatives for comparison as flexible
pavement design involves different nomograph, charts, tables and formulas so it is cumbersome and time taking practice which may result in unsafe or uneconomical design.
The development of the software is using MATLABR2008b programming language. And the goals achieved are the thicknesses of surface, base and subbase layers of flexible
pavement roads are determined and different design charts, default values and tables are digitalized.
Furthermore, comparison between AASHTO and ERA methods in terms of thickness and construction cost can be made to select the best design alternative. Besides, the designer or researcher can do as many alternatives as needed in short time.
The result obtained by the developed software (AASHERA) is verified by comparing with the manuals and examples from different books. And the analysis results turn out to be successful when it is compared with the manuals and books calculation.

▼ This thesis implements the empirical pavement design procedures for flexible as well as rigid pavement by American Association of State Highways and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) into two MATLAB modules of MULTI-PAVE. MULTI-PAVE was developed as a teaching tool that performs pavement thickness design for multiple design procedures using a common input file and a common output format. The AASHTO components were developed in accordance with the 1993 AASHTO Pavement Design Guide, and verified against the original design method. The thicknesses of the Asphalt Concrete, Base Course and Sub-base Course are the design outputs for flexible pavement. For rigid pavement, the thickness of slab is determined for various types of concrete pavements. The modules will be included in a MULTI-PAVE framework to compare the design outputs with other design methods.

▼ The structural strength of roads and streets
as well as the uniformity of strength are ensured by a design
strength of subgrade, sub-base and pavement layers, characterized
by a deformation modulus, the value of which depends on the
properties of materials used for the pavement structural layers and
thickness of the layers. During construction of road or street
pavement structure and its operation the continuous static and
dynamic vehicle loads may cause the intermixing of the subgrade
soil with the frost blanket course. Analogical process could happen
between the frost blanket course and the sub-base constructed from
the large particles of aggregate. Eventually, the intermixed
materials of the different structural layers of road or street can
have the impact on the strength and durability of the whole
structure. In order to prevent the aggregates of different
structural layers from becoming intermixed during road or street
construction or in the phase of operation the geotextile
inter-layers have been world-widely used in the recent 15 years.
Based on the recommendations of U.S. researchers the geotextiles
used for the separation of structural layers should be selected
according to the existing formulas. However, these formulas are
valid only for the road structures without asphalt concrete
pavement. Another method for selecting geotextiles – specifications
and recommendations of different countries. At present there are no
generally accepted European specifications... [to full

▼ This thesis
investigates the development of a decision support system
for the remediation of road infrastructure in local
government, specifically flexible pavements. Augmenting
theoretical knowledge with the heuristics and procedural
knowledge of experienced road asset managers and road
engineers, the software program “PaveMaint SELECT” was
created to assist local government organisations in the
maintenance and management planning of their road
networks. An extensive literature
review was undertaken on the characteristics, performance
and the deterioration modes of flexible pavements along
with suitable remediation practices necessary to prolong
the life of those pavements. A further review was
undertaken on decision making practices in road asset
management and maintenance, including a review of data
collection and quality evaluation processes both in
literature and through that of an initial case study of a
New South Wales local government organisation.
The “PaveMaint SELECT” program was then tested
in a series of field interviews and case studies from
experienced local government road asset managers and road
engineers. Through validation and refinement stemming
from system testing, the final “PaveMaint SELECT” program
is able to effectively provide recommendations that
replicate real-world decisions made by experienced local
government road
practitioners.

▼ Overloading truck traffic is an untenable problem around the world. The occurrence of overloaded truck traffic can be evidence of rapid development of an economy. Most of the developing countries emphasize the development of economy, thus supporting reform of infrastructure is limited. This research investigates the relationship between truck overloading and the condition of road damage. The objective of this research is to determine the amount of economic loss due to overloaded truck traffic is. Axle load will be used to calculate the total ESAL to pavement. This study intends to provide perspective on the relationship between change in axle load due to overloading and the resultant service life of pavement. It can then be used in the estimation of pavement damage in other developing countries facing the problem of truck overloading. In conclusion, economical loss was found, which include reduction of pavement life and increase in maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) cost. As a result, net present value (NPV) of pavement investment with overloading truck traffic is higher than normal truck traffic.

▼ Permeable pavements have been widely used in stormwater attenuation, water balance, and stormwater quality control. Recent studies suggested that the usage of permeable pavement may offer the possibility to reduce the frequency and application rates of road salt during winter time, while simultaneously maintaining required skid resistance on pavement surfaces. This research summarizes the winter performance assessment study of a heavily used permeable pavement parking lot in St. Catharines, Ontario. The purpose of this monitoring study is to evaluate the safety and environmental benefits of permeable pavements, by comparing them to a traditional asphalt pavement. This thesis will present the results and findings from winter 2015/2016 for the pervious concrete and porous asphalt pavements.

▼ Throughout the history of
pavement structure, the parallel layer structure has dominated the structural design of pavements. In other words, the entire
road pavement share a uniform thickness design regardless how many lanes there are. However, due to traffic regulations and driving habits, the traffic flow most probably does not distribute evenly on a multi-lane
road. Modern
pavement design methods usually choose the lane that bears the heaviest traffic load as the design lane to determine the thickness design of the entire
pavement. Hence there could be a certain over-design in the less trafficked lanes. This study aims to propose and evaluate a new structural design for flexible
pavement by reducing the thickness of asphalt layers of the lightly trafficked lanes. The traffic data of a real motorway in the Netherlands was analysed, based on which a new
pavement structural design of a 3-lane
road was established. Two finite element models, for both original and new designs, were established in CAPA-3D to calculate the stress and strain responses under different traffic load combinations. Following the Dutch design method the fatigue and deformation performance predictions of the two
pavement designs were executed and compared. The results showed that the new design indeed improve the material cost-efficiency without compromising the performance of the
pavement structure. Taking advantage of the finite element models, a real-life simulation was also applied. The strain output of the simulation was used to calculate the rutting depth following the American design method. Both calculated rutting depth and the deformation output of the real-time simulation supported the earlier conclusions. An extra simulation of truck platooning was briefly executed and discussed as well. Furthermore, the construction and maintenance feasibilities of the new design were explored. It was proved that the new design can be constructed by the existing equipment and machines. The current maintenance methods and procedures can also be applied to the new design.

▼ Road damage detection is important for road safety and road maintenance planning. Road surface anomalies, like potholes, cracks and ravelling, affect driving conditions, such as driving comfort and safety, noise emission, load loss of trucks, increase of fuel consumption and traffic circulation. Locali- sation of these anomalies allows for targeted road maintenance, which contributes to the improvement of driver safety, comfort and the optimisation of road maintenance. The current technique to detect road damage is that road inspectors determine road damage in road images. However, the results are susceptible to human subjectivity. An improvement on image based road damage detection is using LiDAR data, because the geometry of road damage is measured too. To mitigate the issue of human subjectivity, an automated method for road damage detection was developed for the profile laser scanner on the IV-Infra car. This laser scanner is mounted at the back of the vehicle so that its profile lines are perpendicular to the driving direction. The proposed method consists of: (I) feature extraction with a sliding window algorithm; (II) K-means clustering to create training data; (III) Random Forest classification and (IV) morphological operations to remove noise and identify larger damage patches. This method was tested on an 800-meter long provincial road with different road defects and road types. Most occurring road damages are cracks, craquel and raveling. The results of this method were validated in two ways: using a road inspectors damage classification and a custom-made validation set based on orthophotos. An overall accuracy of 73% is achieved for the fully automated process. When training of the Random Forest was based on an improved, semi-automated training data, the overall accuracy was 58%, this gives visual clear results. This is explained by more noise are presented in the results based on the fully automatic method, which is overlapped with the coarse road inspector’s data. Optical inspection shows that the semi-automated method identified almost all damages of the custom-made validation set, although a shift between the point cloud and the validation is found. Still, the method has some difficulties with detecting the transverse cracks. This problem can be solved by integrating the two other mounted laser scanners of the Iv-Car, but pre-processing is needed to organise the point cloud. Also, an improvement in georeferencing the validation data would help to optimise the method and training data. Nevertheless, promising results are achieved by this method.

▼ Highway safety is a major priority for the public and
for transportation agencies. Pavement distresses directly affect
ride quality, and indirectly contribute to driver distraction,
vehicle operation, and accidents. In this study, analysis was
performed on highways in the states of Arizona, North Carolina and
Maryland for years between 2013 and 2015 in order to investigate
the relationship between accident rate and pavement roughness and
rutting. Two main types of data were collected: crash data from the
accident records and roughness and rut depth data from the pavement
management system database in each state. Crash rates were
calculated using the U.S. Department of Transportation method,
which is the number of accidents per vehicle per mile per year
multiplied by 100,000,000. The variations of crash rate with both
International Roughness Index (IRI) and rut depth were
investigated. Linear regression analysis was performed to study the
correlation between parameters. The analysis showed positive
correlations between road roughness and rut depth in all cases
irrespective of crash severity level. The crash rate data points
were high for IRI values above 250-300 inches/mile in several
cases. Crash road segments represent 37-48 percent of the total
length of the network using 1-mile segments. Roughness and rut
depth values for crash and non-crash segments were close to each
other, suggesting that roughness and rutting are not the only
factors affecting number of crashes but possibly in combination
with other factors such as traffic volume, human factors, etc. In
summary, it can be concluded that both roughness and rut depth
affect crash rate and highway maintenance authorities should
maintain good pavement condition in order to reduce crash
occurrences.

▼ Haul road pavement condition has long been considered as having a significant influence on the efficiency of haulage in surface mining. However limited literature exists relating wearing course condition with performance, resulting in mine operators not maximising the potential value of their haul road assets. This project focuses on defining current issues associated with the functional performance of haul roads, through a case study involving three iron ore mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Consequently attempts are then made to relate material properties to performance so that existing criteria can be verified or refined. Cementitious stabilisation and naturally occurring gravels found adjacent to the mines involved in the case study are then trialled via laboratory testing, show promise and lead to a recommendation of subsequent field trials. Pavement lifetime costing is finally completed with the Pilbara environment as the basis, utilising the most appropriate models currently available for pavement condition and vehicle operating and maintenance costs. This resulted in a lack of variability due to material properties, with maintenance variables having a greater effect. Lastly it is found that potential production loss values (net reduction in ore hauled) outweigh expenditure on improved maintenance practice or even material treatments.

inserida.
This report serves to provide knowledge of the work that was developed during the curricular internship
period that is inserted within the course of Dissertation/Project/Internship (DIPRE), Master's degree in
civil engineering, branch of infrastructure.
The choice of this engineering study branch is due to the intern's interest in wanting to participate in
municipal projects considering new lines of communication needs and / or re-qualified, which respect the
environment and according to community of the current economic policies and the country where the
containment and financial rigor are evident, as is the case of municipal works.
The internship, which lasted six months, was developed in the design division and construction equipment
and public spaces (DCCEEP), in the city council of Vila Nova de Gaia. This municipality has a diversified
road network and is considered a key area for the lives of citizens.
It is thus sought to describe, characterize and scale some types…

▼ Contractors are moving from traditional maintenance to preventive maintenance. To apply preventive maintenance, up-to-date data is required which is unavailable. The goal is to research the applicability of crowdsensing to detect road pavement distresses, and to investigate how the positions of these detections can be used to gain information on a road pavement section. The construction sector is currently moving from traditional maintenance contracts, where maintenance was a pay per bill business, to contracts focused on the performance and availability of assets. These types of contracts shift the risk during the maintenance phase from the government to the contractor. The contractor receives a fine if either the minimum performance or the availability is not met. This fine in combination with the risk of unforeseen maintenance costs creates a demand for more efficient maintenance methods like preventive maintenance. However, in the field of road asset management, there is a knowledge gap in how road pavement distresses develop over time. To fill this knowledge gap, up-to-date information is required. The up-to-date information cannot be provided using the current high-quality methods due to the limited availability of equipment. In this research, raw data is gathered on the state of the road through crowdsourcing with smartphones. This data is then preprocessed by signal analysis, positioning analysis and event detection to retain only the information which describes the occurrence of a road pavement distress. Next, a database analysis consisting of clustering, asset linking and averaging is performed to gather information on the measurements of an instance of road pavement distress. The position of the instance of road pavement distress can be seen as the position of a virtual sensor. A virtual sensor groups events together from multiple smartphones. The location of the virtual sensor is linked to the location of the nearest road pavement asset, allowing asset managers, the people who plan maintenance tasks at contractors, to send their maintenance crew to the correct location. The results from the experiments show that the detection of road pavement distress is possible by using crowdsensing. The position of the virtual sensor increases in accuracy when more data is used. However, it is possible that two different virtual sensors can be merged due to positioning errors. It is also possible to connect the position of the virtual sensor to a real world asset location by using the Dutch national road sections and the hectometer posts. The resulting information can be used to get an indication of the status of different assets, giving asset managers insight into which areas and assets they need to focus on.

▼ Infrastructure asset management is the science and practice of driving the maximum value and levels of service from physical infrastructure systems (e.g. roads, bridges, water and wastewater). This is not limited to regular maintenance, however, and expands to assessing actual conditions, predicting future deterioration, estimating the risks of failure or reduced levels of service, considering the impacts on sustainability and using financial and life-cycle analysis tools to allocate budgets.
This field of practice is based on data-intensive analyses. Nonetheless, because of the limited investments and attention paid to this field, the available data is typically inadequate, and what is available is not reliable in most cases. This study therefore aims to explore and exploit advances in data science to address these two obstacles. First, can future deterioration be predicted through noncausal (circumstantial) attributes when more data is already available? In other words, can climate and generic roadway attributes (which are freely and reliably available) be used to predict future deterioration? Examples of such attributes are temperature ranges, freeze–thaw cycles, levels of precipitation,
road functional class and traffic counts. Second, having linked deterioration to climatic attributes, this research examines whether the proposed approach could be used to study the impact of climate change on
road infrastructure.
It is crucial to point out that the developed models are not causal. Instead of relying on a single equation or a causal relationship, machine learning algorithms predict outcomes by discovering patterns in data. In other words, what are the typical values of certain attributes that have been observed or co-occurred with historical levels of deterioration (not necessarily causing deterioration)? To this end, this study did not attempt to investigate the main causes of deterioration. Rather, in line with new data-driven decision-making practices, this study investigates which attributes increase the quality of pattern detection, without any claims on causation.
This study focused on analyzing performance indicators for asphalt pavements—particularly,
pavement condition index (PCI) and the international roughness index (IRI). The data used was extracted from the Long-Term
Pavement Performance (LTPP) database. The LTPP database is one of the largest, most reliable and well-maintained datasets in the domain. In analyzing LTPP data, the study examined the following machine learning algorithms: decision trees, logistic regression, naïve Bayes classifier, naïve Bayes classifier with kernel estimation, random forest, gradient boosted trees, k-nearest neighbours, linear regression and random forest regression.
The conducted analyses show that the following attributes can be used to predict asphalt
pavement deterioration: initial condition, annual average of daily minimum (and maximum) air temperatures, number of freeze–thaw cycles, annual average daily traffic (AADT), annual precipitation, functional class of…

▼ The investment on pavements is the largest part of capital investment in any modern highway system. Maintaining and operating pavements draw great attention of administrators of Australian road system. In large systems of pavement, pavement management systems can be very complex and look at very small kinds of differences in asphalt mix design, loading types, pavement thicknesses. The study of these details may generate less than a percent increase in the effective use of maintenance funding. It is significant to save even a half percent on rehabilitation costs for hundreds of millions of dollars system.
Many types of distress are assessed in order to investigate the most contributed factors, which affect the overall pavement condition, should be identified to limit the surveyed distress types, including roughness, rutting and cracking. The evaluation of relationships between specific distress types so that the data number could be minimized in collection. Therefore, the cost on pavement condition survey for various types of distress could be reduced greatly.
This paper focuses on analysing the linear relationship between pavement roughness and rutting and the relationship between roughness and cracking. The ranges of R square for the relationship between rutting and roughness from 0.0460 to 0.497 for in rural area; urban area has R square ranges from 0.0003 to 0.5719. The ranges of R square for the relationship between cracking and roughness from 0.0043 to 0.6205 for in rural area; urban area has R square ranges from 0.0056 to 0.5769.
From the assessing of P-value point of view, in the relationship between roughness and rutting, the average P-value is 0.1803 for rural area; it is 0.3641 for urban area. The relationship between roughness and cracking, the average P- value is 0.3727 for rural area, it is 0.2746 for urban area.
In the result, slopes of correlation of rutting and roughness, which are indicated by correlation coefficients, are ranged from -1.2613 or 2.2298. The slopes of cracking are ranging from -0.7143 to 0.0682. The inference could be made that the change of dependent variable roughness is not sensitive to the effect of the independent variables cracking and rutting. It is very low for the linear relationship of roughness variance and AADT. The mask effect of maintenance may attribute the result due to the variance of roughness is decreased by maintenance treatments.
The results of this research confirm that the linear relationships between roughness and cracking, between roughness and rutting are small for the statistical significance of influence the rate of progression. The extent of rutting influence roughness has more sensitivity than cracking.

▼ The development of efficiency models for road network management is challenged by three aspects: reliable future performance predicting capability, effective and efficient optimization modelling, and ability to accommodate constraints faced by the roads authority. This research aims to answer these challenges by analyzing pavement maintenance effectiveness of a road network leading to the development of effective models. The effectiveness of routine, periodic and rehabilitation maintenances are investigated, resulting in the development of a new quantification method. Further, these quantification results form inputs for the development of a stochastic based performance prediction model (Markov Chains) and optimization model (Markov Decision Processes/MDP).
The results and discussions of the maintenance effectiveness analysis are utilized and then directly converted into Transition Probability Matrices (TPM) as main inputs of the Markov Chains. A very important discussion and outcome of this thesis is the development of graphical/visual presentations of the Markov Chains and their interpretations. The methods for presenting the results of the Markov Chains analysis for the performance prediction of different types of pavement maintenance are put forward as an enhanced way to present such information. The analysis and presentations developed in this thesis in part address the previous limited information or discussions on the visual presentations of the Markov Chains in road network management applications. Another important idea put forward in this thesis is an implementation of additional constraints into the MDP optimization analysis. An average cost method is selected for a solution of the MDP and is solved using dual linear programming. These additional constraints (i.e. budget and proportion constraints) are discussed through development of different scenarios, leading to development of optimal maintenance policies. Finally, this thesis demonstrates the implementation of the maintenance policies obtained in the optimization process into a road network under case study. Ultimately; this thesis aims to provide tools for road authorities to select optimal maintenance measures based on a more informed network level performance prediction model, given the uncertainty of pavement behaviours.

▼ Truck traffic is a crucial factor that contributes to pavement damage. The urbanization and globalization promote the higher level of daily consumption for goods, thus increasing the derived demand for freight transport. In some countries, such as Australia, there is a trend towards using larger vehicles, which raised the road authorities’ concern about their effect on pavement because of the lack of pavement maintenance and rehabilitation funding. Therefore, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of Australian road freight market and optimize the allocation of freight for different types of trucks to reduce the total pavement damage.
Weigh-in-motion (WIM) system, which measures and records detailed vehicle information operating on road, was the data source for this study. The data was provided by the State Road Authority of Victoria (VicRoads). This thesis gave out a prototype filtering strategy for WIM database to improve the accuracy. Also, it investigated the efficiency of freight transport by comparing the effect of six-axle semi-trailers and nine-axle B-doubles with regards to pavement performance when carrying various payloads. Mathematical models were developed to help decision makers consider how to distribute the road freight task more efficiently to minimize the pavement damage induced by freight vehicles. A simplified pavement performance prediction model was utilized as a basis to determine the future pavement maintenance & rehabilitation schedules and thus, help compare the long-term pavement treatment costs for different traffic loading scenarios.
The outcomes of the research showed that it would have considerable advantages in reducing the overall pavement damage by decreasing the percentage of empty trucks, changing the proportion of freight carried by B-doubles as well as optimizing the payload distributions. In addition, there would be significant benefits in the pavement maintenance & rehabilitation costs over the pavement service life by improving the allocation of freight for trucks.

▼ The research explores aspects of road surface measurement and monitoring, targeting some of the main challenges in the field, including cost and portability of high-speed inertial profilers. These challenges are due to the complexities of modern profilers to integrate various sensors while using advanced algorithms and processes to analyse measured sensor data. Novel techniques were proposed to improve the accuracy of road surface longitudinal profiles using inertial profilers. The thesis presents a Half-Wavelength Peak Matching (HWPM) model, designed for inertial profilers that integrate a laser displacement sensor and an accelerometer to evaluate surface irregularities. The model provides an alternative approach to drift correction in accelerometers, which is a major challenge when evaluating displacement from acceleration. The theory relies on using data from the laser displacement sensor to estimate a correction offset for the derived displacement. The study also proposes an alternative technique to evaluating vibration velocity, which improves on computational factors when compared to commonly used methods. The aim is to explore a different dimension to road roughness evaluation, by investigating the effect of surface irregularities on vehicle vibration. The measured samples show that the drift in the displacement calculated from the accelerometer increased as the vehicle speed at which the road measurement was taken increased. As such, the significance of the HWPM model is more apparent at higher vehicle speeds, where the results obtained show noticeable improvements to current techniques. All results and analysis carried out to validate the model are based on real-time data obtained from an inertial profiler that was designed and developed for the research. The profiler, which is designed for portability, scalability and accuracy, provides a Power Over Ethernet (POE) enabled solution to cope with the demand for high data transmission rates.

▼ The scope of this thesis is to investigate the design and properties of rigid concrete pavements for forest and mountainous areas of Greece. Rigid pavements at forest roads must provide adequate bearing capacity, long service life and good traffic conditions, with the minimum construction and maintenance cost. The area of research is Epirus, at Northwestern Greece, which is characterized as a steep, mountainous landscape, covered by forests to a great extent. Forest roads without pavement at the mountainous areas of Epirus must be maintained yearly in order to be usable. On the other hand, forest roads with rigid pavement have no need for maintenance and even at the end of the pavements life cycle remain useable. Rigid pavements have been established as a good technical solution for the Forest Service, which constructs them at forest roads with repeated surface wear.So far rigid pavements at forest roads in the mountains of Epirus have been constructed on an empirical basis. Basic parameters of road pavements design have been ignored. Furthermore, the energy footprint of the constructed forest rigid pavements is high and no industrial byproducts or recycled materials have been used in order to reduce life cycle cost.Forest and mountainous roads are low volume roads; trucks carry heavy loads of wood only during the harvest period. In mountain and forest areas, like the mountains in the area of Epirus, it is inefficient to record traffic volumes due to the extensive forest road network and bad weather conditions during the winter. For this reason, traffic load is estimated using forest wood production, farming intensity and the amount of industries located at forest and mountainous areas (quarries, wind farms, etc.). Using this information it is possible to calculate traffic load for any forest and mountainous area.In order to make a complete registry of the problems and failures of concrete pavements constructed in forest roads of the Region of Epirus, it was decided to record the existing concrete pavements by visiting and surveying most of the forest road network of Epirus. A large area of the Region of Epirus was covered including parts with high tree density.A database was created containing problems in the observed road network, in order to identify and present the most common causes of failure in the forest concrete pavements. An identification and categorization of the concrete pavement properties was carried out and core specimens were drilled from concrete, while soil specimens were also taken from the ground where the concrete layer was based on. The traffic load for the service life of the pavements was then estimated and, based on the results, the required concrete layer thickness was calculated. The results of this research show that the existing forest concrete pavements of Epirus were constructed with less than the minimum required designed thickness, a practice that could account for some of their durability issues.Rigid pavement thickness design for new forest pavements has been made using empirical,…

▼ Analizuojama asfalto dangos konstrukcijos
asfalto dangos konstrukcijos stipriui. Pateikta krintančio svorio
deflektometro matavimo metodikų apžvalga kitose šalyse. Atlikta
temperatūros ir drėgnio kiekvienos dienos pokyčių analizė,
įvertinant jų įtaką dangos konstrukcijai. Nustatyta kelio dangos
deflektometru nustatytas asfalto dangos sluoksnių Eo modulio vertes
redukuoti standartinei +20 °C temperatūrai.
This final master thesis performs asphalt
pavement structural behavior of the Lithuanian climate conditions,
taking into account the temperature and moisture, as one of the
most important climatic factors that influence the road asphalt
pavement structural strength. The Falling Weight Deflectometer
(FWD) measurement methods used in other countries are presented.
The temperature and moisture changes in the day are analysed,
evaluating their impact on pavement design. The strength of asphalt
pavement layers, as well as Eo modulus values, measured using the
falling weight deflectometer, strongly depend on the pavement
temperature. When we use deflectometer for measuring asphalt
pavement strength at different environmental conditions and in
different season, the values of Eo modulus should be reduced to the
assumed standard temperature. So during this research at the
experimental asphalt pavement structure the temperature correction
factor was revised. The use of this factor enables to adjust the Eo
modulus values of asphalt pavement layers measured by the Falling
Weight Deflectometer to the standard temperature of +20
°C.
