▼ Rioting by pupils has been and continues to be one of the major disciplinary problems in Zambian high schools. There have been many cases of serious rioting among pupils in high schools during the post-independence period in Zambia. A number of factors can contribute to rioting among pupils in high schools. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to find out the causes, effects and implications of pupils' riots in four selected government high schools on the Copperbelt and Eastern Provinces. The study sought to: a) Find out the causes of pupils' riots in the selected high schools. b) Investigate the effects of pupils' riots on the teaching-learning environment and infrastructure in the selected high schools. c) Examine the implications of pupils' riots in the selected high schools. The research design used in this study was descriptive survey. The sample comprised two hundred grade eleven and twelve pupils, four head teachers and their deputies, eight officials from DEBS offices, fifty-five teachers and eight PTA members. The study employed purposive sampling technique in order to select the high schools while respondents were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of data were made. The study revealed that there were many causes of pupils' riots. Among the major ones were lack of open discussions, teachers' failure to understand pupils behavior, poor communication, lack of guidance, among others. It was also found that school administration practices and operational procedures which included lack of consultation with stake holders. The study further portrayed the effects of pupils' riots in selected high schools as being enormous in that infrastructure and the school environment were damaged. It further revealed that all the four selected high schools had poor performance in the mock examinations in 2009 academic year. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made: • All teachers appointed to headship/deputy headship positions in high schools should undergo high school management training before they take up such positions. • Communication and dialogue between school authorities and pupils should be fostered, for instance through creation of high school representative councils. • Pupils organizing riots should be given stiffer punishments to deter others from doing the same in future. • Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) should hold meetings regularly. This would make the stakeholders to get the feedback on how the high schools are performing both academically and pupil discipline. • Government should improve the general school teaching-learning environment for both teachers and pupils. Go slow and strikes should be the last resort.

▼ In recent decades, scholars of contemporary British history have grappled with the perceived changes in British society which characterised the post-war era. One of those changes involved race, and the interactions between black and Asian communities and the Establishment. This thesis is centred around one key event when, from 10-12 April 1981, Brixton was the scene of violent confrontations between largely young, largely black residents and the police. In the immediate aftermath the Home Secretary, William Whitelaw, appointed Lord Scarman to head an inquiry into what had occurred, which proved controversial and was boycotted by some Brixton based community groups. Scarman's report was published in November 1981 and the government publicly accepted its recommendations. However, recently declassified and newly available documents have allowed for this thesis to reconsider the inquiry and how it was received. It examines the inquiry process and the opposition to it; how the inquiry was perceived by the government and whether Scarman's recommendations were implemented; and what newly available witness testimony tells us about the events of 10-12 April. The analysis indicates that the side-lining of this testimony in favour of accounts from the Metropolitan Police compromised Scarman's conclusions, especially regarding policing. This reconsideration makes clear that the inquiry was viewed as problematic because of how it was organised, and that although the government may have publicly accepted the conclusions of the report, actions taken (or not taken) served to undermine this position. Through lack of statutory authority, lack of funding or lack of support, the government ensured that most of Scarman's recommendations would be badly implemented or not implemented at all. Overall, the Scarman inquiry and its aftermath raise questions about how British society viewed black Britons, about whether there was genuine commitment to improvement regarding issues of racism, and about racism within the Metropolitan Police.

▼ While college and university students have long been associated with newfound independence, alcohol and unrest, the phenomenon of celebratory rioting, which combines these key elements of student culture, is relatively new. While incidents have occurred since 1985, their recent escalation in size, frequency, and property damages continues to raise public concern in many college and university towns across North America. Research indicates that celebratory riots result from large non-protest related assemblies of mostly students where alcohol is consumed freely, participants spontaneously engage in unruly behaviour, and police intervention invites resistant and aggressive responses from crowd members. However, such outbursts are often difficult to predict since they may emerge from a myriad of possible trigger events. In order to further interpret celebratory rioting, this thesis examines a number of individual-centred and event-centred crowd theories to determine what is known about crowd behaviour. This study concludes that the analysis of a celebratory riot event requires a process-rooted approach, such as the Value-Added model, to account for the situational factors which shape the event’s precursors, transactions and aftermath. This thesis focuses analytical attention on the annual Queen’s Homecoming Aberdeen street party in Kingston, Ontario which became riotous in 2005. This case study comprised an extensive media content analysis, Queen’s archival research, and direct observation at a number of student focus groups, committee meetings and student gatherings. This study, which concludes with an analysis of the non-riotous Homecoming celebrations of 2006, revealed that the riot of 2005 was hardly unique; instead, it followed decades of intermittent student disturbances in the Queen’s student neighbourhood. Furthermore, the 2005 Aberdeen Street riot ultimately parallels the story of so many celebratory riots which have recently occurred and continue to emerge in a number of college and university towns across North America.

▼ The 19th century is seen by many as a crucial turning point in the history of protest in Britain and across the global north. In Charles Tillyâ€™s famous history of the period, the first few decades of the 19th century mark the transition from the violent, direct action of the premodern era to our modern, respectable, social movements (Tilly 1995, 2004). A study of rioting in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow from 1800 to 1939, therefore, allows for a unique window onto that momentous period of upheaval. But it also has a sociological aim. The last decade has seen a resurgence of rioting in Europe and the USA, prompting many to suggest that riots will be the dominant mode of protest in the coming years (e.g. Badiou 2012, Mayer et al 2016, Clover 2016). But, as I will show, our existing sociological theories of riots tend to be overly narrow, to focus exclusively on one or two master variables without paying due attention to the variety of forms and behaviours that make up rioting. These are the two challenges I take up in this thesis. My main empirical contribution is a catalogue of four hundred riots across the three cities. This was produced by searching through national and local newspaper archives, Home Office documents, local police reports and secondary literature. The catalogue is presented in the Appendix. Using the rich, narrative accounts provided by these sources, I try to analyse the riots on their own terms, as a set of interactions and behaviours, as well as to embed them in the local history of each city. This reveals that riots are not the chaotic, unpredictable moments of madness that we so often think of them as. Riots are rather patterned by peopleâ€™s everyday use of time and space â€“ they expand to fill the growing urban landscape of each city and their timing follows gradual changes to the working week. Riots are also embedded in culture and society more broadly. In fact, as those roots in local society were eroded in the last few decades of the 19th century, this led to a decline in the number of riots in Manchester, Liverpool and most of the rest of the country. Meanwhile, the actual way in which people riot also evolves over time. Riots changed from an autonomous form of protest, to one that was subordinated to the strike and the demonstration. Rioters also move away from targeting specific (often powerful) individuals to targeting people because of their identity as, for example, scabs, Irish Catholics or fascists. This history undermines the orthodox account of protest presented by Charles Tilly. Violent direct action continued to be a key part of urban life until far later than his account suggests. And those later riots are not accidental hangovers from a previous era, but in fact adapted to changing conditions. My catalogue also suggests that existing theories of riots can be synthesised and broadened by concentrating on the way that individual riots unfold over hours, weeks or months, on what I think of as their career through time. Race riots have struck America’s cities large and small for more than a century, and the media have retold these brutal events for American audiences. The 1960s, in particular, endured years of violent rioting due to social and economic inequalities between whites and blacks, and many of these riots have received ample coverage from the media and academic scholars. However, a lesser-known riot that destroyed homes, devastated businesses, and took the lives of two individuals was the 1969 York, Pennsylvania race riots. Similar to more well-known riots, such as the 1965 Watts riot and the 1967 Detroit riot, the racial violence in York was the result of decades of inequalities and frustrations between blacks and whites. What sets this riot apart is that two murders that occurred over those twelve deadly days in 1969 would go unsolved for more than thirty years. The killing of a twenty-seven-year-old black woman, Lillie Belle Allen, and a twenty-two-year-old white rookie police officer, Henry C. Schaad, were not resolved until their killers were brought to justice in 2002 and 2003, respectively. This dissertation explores the development of journalistic approaches to covering race relations in the United States. The methods employed to cover the 1969 York race riots and subsequent murder trials differ greatly from those more recent racial protests today. First, an examination of coverage from 1968 and 1969 reveals how the newspaper and television news media dictated public opinion of these violent events and established the foundation for a historical narrative. Then, the study fast-forwards thirty years to when the local York media commemorated the thirty-year anniversary of the riots in 1999. Although the local media briefly revisited the story of the 1969 York riots after they transpired, this local story came back unexpectedly in full force in 1999. However, the local audience was not ready to remember those events. These commemorations not only broke the silence of many York citizens, but also magnified the inequalities and social issues facing York in the present while also instigating the reopening of the Allen and Schaad murder cases in 2000. In addition, the mayor of York, Charles Robertson, was arrested in 2001 for the murder of Allen, bringing the newsworthiness of this story to another level. Mayor Robertson’s involvement in the story suppressed the larger social issues that led to the riots and, instead, over-simplified the story as one, racist villain who instigated the violence. By examining the local, regional, and national media coverage of these events, I argue that the narratives used personified, dramatic style to express competing accounts of what caused the York race riots and the personas of the characters involved, as well as the larger issues or race relations and race reconciliation. ▼ This study addresses violent urban disturbances which occurred in England in the early 1980s with particular reference to the Bristol ‘riots’ of April 1980 and the numerous disorders which followed in July 1981. Revisiting two concepts traditionally utilised to explain the spread of collective violence, namely ‘diffusion’ and ‘contagion,’ it argues that the latter offers a more useful model for understanding the above-mentioned events. Diffusion used in this context implies that such disturbances are independent of each other and occur randomly. It is associated with the concept of ‘copycat riots’, which were commonly invoked by the national media as a way of explaining the spread of urban disturbances in July 1981. Contagion by contrast holds that urban disturbances are related to one another and involve a variety of communication processes and rational collective decision-making. This implies that such events can only be fully understood if they are studied in terms of their local dynamics. Providing the first comprehensive macro-historical analysis of the disturbances of July 1981, this thesis utilises a range of quantitative techniques to argue that the temporal and spatial spread of the unrest exhibited patterns of contagion. These mini-waves of disorder located in several conurbations were precipitated by major disturbances in inner-city multi-ethnic areas. This contradicts more conventional explanations which credit the national media as the sole driver of riotous behaviour. The thesis then proceeds to offer a micro analysis of disturbances in Bristol in April 1980, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Exploiting previously unexplored primary sources and recently collected oral histories from participants, it establishes detailed narratives of three related disturbances in the city. The anatomy of the individual incidents and local contagious effects are examined using spatial mapping, social network and ethnographic analyses. The results suggest that previously ignored educational, sub-cultural and ethnographic intra- and inter-community linkages were important factors in the spread of the disorders in Bristol. The case studies of the Bristol disorders are then used to illuminate our understanding of the processes at work during the July 1981 disturbances. It is argued that the latter events were essentially characterised by anti-police and anti-racist collective violence, which marked a momentary recomposition of working-class youth across ethnic divides.

▼ The aim of this dissertation is to explore the complex phenomenon of French identity and Frenchness in the 21st century by exploring the geographical, social and cultural site around which the November 2005 riots occurred. The banlieue, literally the suburbs, figuratively the projects, embodies the necessity to examine the dynamics of a location, marked by stigmatization and framed by a hegemonic political discourse. In chapter one, I examine the history and the architecture that characterizes the French banlieue as a site of fear and rejection. Through the study of the classic movie La Haine, directed by Mathieu Kassovitz in 1995, these fears are questioned and manifest the necessity to scrutinize obsolete notions of integration and communautarism as ethnocentric strongholds and expressions of ideological and cultural preferences. In chapter two, I demonstrate the hegemonic media framing of the banlieue as a foreign, dirty, poor and uneducated site. This biased reading and depicting reproduces colonial schemes of an old European nation. By closely reading various newspapers articles, a narrative stamped by racism emerges, thus revealing a post-traumatic syndrome of memory repressed on the subject matter of colonization, decolonization and immigration. This repressed memory explodes in the anger of the alienated inhabitants of the banlieue, and in their writings, analyzed in a subpart to articulate the accurate symptoms of a post-colonial and postmodern trauma. Last but not least, I argue through the study of its history, impact and evolution in France, that Rap music has become the polyphonic expression of repressed voices, emphasizing the great need for France to acknowledge the presence and the contributions of all its citizens. By exploring the works of the writer/rapper Abd Al Malik, who grew up in the projects of Strasbourg, a dynamic space for a creative discourse of identity materializes itself and gives way to a new France, that of the VIth Republic. ▼ America's inner cities, while experiencing fewer episodes of major civil violence after the 1960s, had become extremely violent places by the 1980s, riven by street crime, drug trade, gang wars, and a dramatic rise in incarceration rates. While the response to the urban uprisings of the 1960s included a mix of redistributive and retributive programs meant to address the social and economic conditions, discrimination, and segregation that contributed to frustration and despair in the inner city, the overwhelming approach to addressing violence, street crime, and inequality in urban areas during the 1980s was through aggressive policing, punitive policies, and the criminal justice system. ❧ This dissertation seeks to unravel this development. ""Managing Marginalization from Watts to Rodney King: The Struggle Over Policing and Social Control in Los Angeles, 1965-1992"" explores how the struggles and debates over policing, criminal justice, and law and order politics in Los Angeles after the 1965 Watts uprising shaped the transformation of urban liberalism, shifted understandings of the problems facing late‐twentieth century American cities, and influenced inner‐city communities of color. By tracking the ground where institutions, local officials, and social movements met and interacted, this dissertation shows how the development of late‐twentieth century punitive urban policy was not only a story of government failure or the predetermined triumph of mass incarceration but the outcome of a contested process and the struggle over paramilitary policing, punitive policies, and alternative solutions to urban social problems since the mid‐1960s. The contestation surrounding policing and punitive policies spurred by demands from local organizations, social movements, and residents, while unable to alter the asymmetry of coercive state power, was thus part of the making and remaking of the carceral state. ❧ By choosing to address the material consequences of urban decline and racial inequality through crime control policies and intensified policing this dissertation argues that city and law enforcement officials ushered in a new vision of aggressive state authority that reframed problems of poverty as ones of crime and behavior. The lack of responsiveness by local officials to movements and residents demanding an end to police violence and neglect in the late 1960s and early 1970s left an opening for the punitive turn in urban policy and the aggressive, paramilitary police measures associated with the War on Crime, War on Drugs, and War on Gangs that become a central means of maintaining social control over marginalized groups living in segregated areas of concentrated poverty during the late 1970s and 1980s. Such punitive policies reinterpreted who had legitimate claims on the state, produced a disillusionment with government, a sense of fear and suspicion due to possibility of arrest, a rise in incarceration rates, and both a feeling of and literal disenfranchisement among poor inner‐city black and Latino residents that led… Advisors/Committee Members: Kelley, Robin D.G. ▼ The 19th century is seen by many as a crucial turning point in the history of protest in Britain and across the global north. In Charles Tilly's famous history of the period, the first few decades of the 19th century mark the transition from the violent, direct action of the premodern era to our modern, respectable, social movements (Tilly 1995, 2004). A study of rioting in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow from 1800 to 1939, therefore, allows for a unique window onto that momentous period of upheaval. But it also has a sociological aim. The last decade has seen a resurgence of rioting in Europe and the USA, prompting many to suggest that riots will be the dominant mode of protest in the coming years (e.g. Badiou 2012, Mayer et al 2016, Clover 2016). But, as I will show, our existing sociological theories of riots tend to be overly narrow, to focus exclusively on one or two master variables without paying due attention to the variety of forms and behaviours that make up rioting. These are the two challenges I take up in this thesis. My main empirical contribution is a catalogue of four hundred riots across the three cities. This was produced by searching through national and local newspaper archives, Home Office documents, local police reports and secondary literature. The catalogue is presented in the Appendix. Using the rich, narrative accounts provided by these sources, I try to analyse the riots on their own terms, as a set of interactions and behaviours, as well as to embed them in the local history of each city. This reveals that riots are not the chaotic, unpredictable moments of madness that we so often think of them as. Riots are rather patterned by people's everyday use of time and space - they expand to fill the growing urban landscape of each city and their timing follows gradual changes to the working week. Riots are also embedded in culture and society more broadly. In fact, as those roots in local society were eroded in the last few decades of the 19th century, this led to a decline in the number of riots in Manchester, Liverpool and most of the rest of the country. Meanwhile, the actual way in which people riot also evolves over time. Riots changed from an autonomous form of protest, to one that was subordinated to the strike and the demonstration. Rioters also move away from targeting specific (often powerful) individuals to targeting people because of their identity as, for example, scabs, Irish Catholics or fascists. This history undermines the orthodox account of protest presented by Charles Tilly. Violent direct action continued to be a key part of urban life until far later than his account suggests. And those later riots are not accidental hangovers from a previous era, but in fact adapted to changing conditions. My catalogue also suggests that existing theories of riots can be synthesised and broadened by concentrating on the way that individual riots unfold over hours, weeks or months, on what I think of as their career through time. ▼ The new urban narrative of 1992 South Central Los Angeles hinged upon a framework based in gangsta rap, spearheaded by N.W.A. and Ice Cube, and steeped in the conflicts that plagued the black, and to a different extent, Latino communities within South Central. O’Shea Jackson, better known by his stage name Ice Cube, provided a critical take on the events of the Los Angeles civil unrest in an interview conducted by Brian Cross for his book It’s Not About a Salary…: “When you look at anarchy, when you look at no law, no order, man, individuals are liable to do anything” (Cross 215). Jackson’s term “anarchy” summarized the media perspective on what they deemed were the “riots.” At its basest definition, anarchy is: “a situation of confusion and wild behavior in which the people in a country, group, organization, etc., are not controlled by rules or laws” (Merriam-Webster). I posit here that Jackson’s analysis in his hip hop, Paul Beatty’s imagery in his novel The White Boy Shuffle, and the interviews of the citizenry of South Central included in Anna Deveare-Smith’s play “Twilight: Los Angeles” point to a different and more nuanced urban narrative that directly countered the media representation of the “riots.” Beatty, largely through his semi-autobiographic protagonist Gunnar Kaufman, directly contrasts the stereotypes of the “riot” that were presented by the media with the lived, and slightly embellished, experiences of Gunnar. Gangsta rap also allowed for commentary through hyperbole, as many artists had to overstep the bounds of convention to make statements that would ring true to their experience on the ground. Deveare-Smith took copious interviews and edited them in such a way as to put forth a poetic retelling of the events through the verbatim rhetoric of its participants. When coupled with the mainstream media perspective, it becomes clear that there are certainly two very different retellings of the “riot” and its motivating factors. ( en )
