▼ More and more multinational companies are adopting
telecommuting as a new mode of work arrangement in China.
Meanwhile, more and more local companies are also using
telecommuting to bring flexibility to the workplaces and offering
it as a benefit to attract employees. The cultural context in China
is characterized by high power distance and collectivism.
Supervisors have high reward power and legitimate power. They have
the authority to allocate resources, assign tasks, define the work
procedures, and make employment decisions. Employees care about
being “in-group” and therefore visibility loss to their
supervisors. This paper explored the impact of supervisory power
and visibility on telecommuters’ work outcomes. The results showed
that supervisory reward power and legitimate power were positively
related with telecommuting frequencies. Supervisory reward power
was also proved to have a positive impact on telecommuting
performance. Visibility loss was found to be negatively related to
telecommuting satisfaction. Additionally, the results showed that
supervisory reward power had a stronger impact on telecommuting
frequency for telecommuters whose supervisors were telecommuting
compared to those whose supervisors were not telecommuting.
Similarly, visibility loss had a stronger impact on telecommuting
satisfaction for telecommuters whose supervisors were telecommuting
compared to those whose supervisors were not telecommuting. I also
discussed implications as to how to effectively manage
telecommuters and improve their work effectiveness in the context
of Chinese culture.

▼ Using critical applied linguistics, and drawing on the concept of power as theorised by Foucault, this study examines issues of power and pedagogical practices that influenced the teaching of writing to Thai English Foreign Language (EFL) primary students. Carspecken’s critical ethnographic approach was adopted to gather data. The research yielded findings concerning power relations that operated in the enactment of EFL pedagogies for teaching writing in Thai schools. The research has theoretical significance for understanding EFL writing education in Thailand in the context of the international spread of English in the twenty-first century.

▼ In this study we will analyze the concept of desire and its implication in Thomas Hobbes Theory, identifying it as a fundamental element in the determination of the mans action, through the anthropology or empiric psychology developed by Hobbes, changing the traditional order of the ethics and political universe. Desire that appears as a power, an impulse which gives movement to life, synonym of happiness, but, because it is without measure or satisfaction, puts man in situations where the risk of premature and violent death is present. State of conflict, represented by the hobbesian state of nature, in which man, in a context of pure equality, attacks for desire, either to obtain more and more power, or not to lose what he had already achieved. Behind the fear of death, there is the fear of losing the most desired object: life. But, despite spying the enemy, man is also capable of a consensus, when he uses his sense, with which he adds will and elocution. The consensus is the pact which creates the conditions of possibility for the institution of the absolute State, power which concentrates the power of everybody with the intention of assuring peace and prosperity, common interest for all the people. The State needs to impose limits to the never-ending desire of the individual and, because of it, needs to seem strong as a Leviathan. The Hobbesian State is an artificial body created by man, which devises a mechanic of control to, through the fear of punishment and the promise of a reward, orients the human action in the meaning of controlling the desire without suppressing it. An attempt to keep the flames of the desire lit in man, avoiding, at the same time, that the flames burn the man. The paradox of limiting the desire, holding it inside limited fields without surrender to it

▼ The purpose of this study is to identify the roles and functions public relations practitioners serve in hospitals. Discovering what roles practitioners serve, what training practitioners have, as well as their perceptions of practice and their
power in the hospital industry in the United States can help illuminate the current status of public relations in hospitals. The study was conducted through an online survey, administered to professionals working in hospital public relations departments. Determining what skills are most in demand today and what
power practitioners believe they have can help better prepare public relations students for employment in hospitals, as well as show what functions of public relations practice need to be strengthened to prevent encroachment by other professions who could take those voids as opportunities. ( en )

▼ A novel taxonomy for character progression in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG’s) was developed into three main functions: the identification, classification, and nomenclature of character progression types. A conceptual framework was established assessing two existing character progression types, linear character progression and nonstatistic character progression, using the grounded theory research method approach. The framework was then used as a form of reference in order to develop the classification and nomenclature of character progression types. These results are a foundation to determine whether a novel, hybrid approach to character progression could increase the level of player investment in gameplay based on the taxonomy of character progression types. Ultimately, this taxonomy can serve designers’ critical thinking process, enabling them to better accommodate their specific audience of players, potentially reducing player churn rate.

Reward has always been linked to the exercise of power over others.Combined with sanction, this is the way a decision-maker uses to get somebody to behave properly.Reward has indeed become asserted in many disciplinary systems, such as school, military or prison discipline.Within work relations, human resources studies and “incitative”, or “motivations” theories have perfectly understood the idea of reward as a means for the employer to get the expected behavior from their employees. Thus, contests and employees rating based on their performance are organized; gifts, gratuities, seniority bonus, attendance bonus, premium bonus or stock options may be given; at last, career evolution is facilitated by vocational training, promotions, and career pathways. The power that an employer has on their employees will then have a dimension: reward. However, reward seems to have been unfairly forgotten by law and work jurists despite its practical and theoretical casualty. The aim of this study is to fill this gap.Rewarding leads back to a particular conception, which has largely been accepted, that power within private law is expressed by legally binding acts. After giving a definition of reward, the ambition of this study is to define the qualities of this ability, and then, to describe its functions.

When nurses are empowered patient care and nursing services improve through enhanced productivity and job satisfaction. The aim of the present study was to identify those essential elements through which nurse managers can empower nurses. By making use
