▼ Objective
Helicobacter pylori (HP) may cause chronic gastritis, atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), even gastric cancer. Eradication therapy can not only heal the injured mucosa, but also prevent PUD relapse and reduce the risk of gastric cancer. National Health Insurance paid for eradication therapy of PUD with HP infection, but not the gastritis patients. So far we donât have available report regarding health
resource utility of such patients who receive eradication therapy. The purpose of this study is to figure out the influence of health
resource utility of the HP gastritis patients who receive eradication therapy or not.
Method
This is a retrospective study. We enrolled the patients who receive upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (PES) which showed gastritis and rapid urease testing positive in a district hospital. We collected these patientâs medical data, whether receiving eradication therapy, or the frequency of outpatient access and PES, payments for digestant one year before and after the diagnosis made, then go to the statistic analysis.
Result
After the HP gastritis patients receiving eradication therapy, the frequency of outpatient access and payment of digestant all decreased, while the frequency of PES is the same. If we enroll the fee for eradication therapy, the payment before and after treatment is of no difference. By the way, the patients who did not receive eradication therapy, all items of health
resource utility is off no difference before and after follow up.
Conclusion
HP gastritis patients who receiving eradication therapy will reduce the frequency of outpatient access, following decreasing of health
resource utility, including fee for registration and co-payments of the patients, and fee for physician visit and drug prescription of National Health Insurance. If the National Health Insurance Administration pay for eradication therapy of HP gastritis patients, it wouldnât increase the expenditure of the drugs at all.

▼ Freedom to communicate irrespective of time,
location, distance and situation is the driving force behind the
success of wireless cellular mobile system. The main objective of
future wireless mobile networks is to provide services efficiently
to the mobile users in all environments. To maximize the resource
utilization performance of the cellular network, to provide better
Quality of Service(QoS) and satisfying the wireless mobile user
requirements, such as minimum new call blockings and handoff call
droppings and clear information quality, there are three
investigations introduced in this work. They are 1. Hybrid Channel
Allocation with Queuing (HCAQ) for effective channel allocation
strategy. 2. Priority on Resource Allocation (PRA) for effective
bandwidth allocation of a particular multimedia call for traffic
control. 3. Resource Estimation and Reservation (RER) for future
mobile multimedia calls for effective traffic management. Firstly,
for channel allocation strategy, Hybrid Channel Allocation with
Queuing (HCAQ) technique is implemented. In this to achieve
effective resource utilization, Hybrid Channel Allocation (HCA)
strategy for channel allocation and queuing technique applied to
HCA strategy for QoS provisioning are implemented. Secondly, for
multimedia call bandwidth allocation, Priority on Resource
Allocation (PRA) is developed. In multimedia applications like
audio phone, video on demand, video conference, file transfer, etc,
bandwidth is the most critical resource. Multimedia call may
require different amount of bandwidth, and it depends on the type
of call. Reserving required amount of resource in advance to a
future new and handoff call is better than rejecting a call at the
neck of the moment due to insufficient available resource at a
particular time. Implementation of the above three investigations
in a real time wireless mobile multimedia network will reduce the
new call blocking and handoff call dropping probabilities of the
mobile user and the system resource utilization along with

▼ During the era of the Apollo missions, there was been a great deal of interest among scientists, engineers, and the general population regarding the Moon and Outer Space. That interest has cycled through the years since but still burns strongly today as evidenced by the National Space Policy of President Barack Obama in 2010. Within this document, six goals were stated dealing with advanced study of the universe, which likely leads to the necessity of lunar colonization; the focus of this thesis.
The lunar environment provides several extreme challenges that may place any long term mission and its crewmembers in severe danger. These challenges include, but not limited to, reduced gravity, lack of a significant atmosphere, high velocity micrometeoroid impacts, extreme high and low temperatures, and dangerous levels of ionizing radiation. This thesis discusses many of these challenges in brief detail but focuses primarily on the topic of extreme temperature variation. By using the principles of heat flow, it was determined that at the lunar equator, the expected surface temperature atop the lunar habitat ranges from 187.5 K at night to 470 K during the day. These temperatures require the use of a strong thermal shield to provide shelter for the crewmembers and shield the habitat itself from the potentially dangerous temperatures. By using a layer of lunar regolith one-meter thick housed within the depth of the aluminum frame, the interior of the habitat is adequately shielded from the surface temperatures. Using a numerical integration-based analysis, the high and low temperatures were found to dissipate within the outermost thirty centimeters, at which point the regolith temperature remained relatively constant throughout the entire lunar cycle.
This behavior is especially important due to the increased stress levels found within the aluminum frame members making up the structure of the habitat. After the application of the cold nighttime temperatures, the maximum Von Mises stress value within the outer chord members increased by 20% seeing the yield strength safety factor reduce from 2.2 prior to the thermal load to 1.82 after its application. Similarly, the high temperatures of the daytime resulted in a 35% stress increase with a safety factor equal to 1.63. The presence of a high quality thermal shield can help to minimize the exposure of the structural elements to this type of loading and therefore reduced the stresses and deflections within the habitat frame.
With respect to the habitat vibration, it was found that the attachment of the inflatable membrane helps to increase the natural frequency of the structure. However, without sufficient pre-stressing or applied pressure, highly localized vibrations with very low natural frequencies were seen within the individual membrane bays. As the temperature was increased this phenomena was less apparent due to the expansion of the frame members stretching and pre-stressing the membrane.
The idea of colonizing the lunar…

▼ Background: Though studies have consistently revealed variation in
resource utilization between chronic and episodic migraineurs, less is known about how these differences compare across countries. This research describes migraine-specific health
resource utilization in chronic and episodic migraineurs across the United States (US), Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, France and Australia. Methods: A web-based screening survey, used to determine eligibility, was administered to 32,782 panelists who had previously reported experiencing headaches or migraines. Screener respondents (n=16,663) were eligible for the main questionnaire if they were ≥ 18 years of age, reported at least one headache (not associated with a cold, flu, head injury, or hangover) during the prior three months, and reported symptoms meeting the revised second International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-IIR) diagnostic criteria for migraine. For the main questionnaire, respondents provided data concerning sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, attitudes, and
utilization of health resources. Results: In bivariate analyses, the intensity of
resource use differed across countries in each migraine type. In multivariate regression, the odds of visiting a provider for headache in the three months prior to completing the survey were higher in all countries relative to the US. The odds of having a typical provider of headache care were also higher in all countries relative to the US, but this was only significant for France (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.04, 3.32). Relative to the US, the odds of having ever visited the emergency room for headache were significantly lower in France (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.22, 0.62), the UK (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.14, 0.45) and Germany (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.18, 0.53). Respondents from Australia (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.13, 2.96) and France (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.00, 2.28) were more likely than those from the US to report ever trying more than three abortive agents. The odds of currently using a prescription abortive agent were significantly higher in France (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.19, 2.74), the UK (OR 2.68, 95% CI 1.72, 4.17), Australia (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.16, 3.03) and Germany (OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.37, 3.23) than in the US. Conclusion: Migraineurs differed significantly across countries in their demographic and clinical characteristics, and in the resources they utilized. Migraineurs from the US were generally less likely to report use of preventative services, such as recent provider visits and use of prescription abortive agents, and more likely to report emergency room visits, relative to migraineurs from the other countries studied. However, US migraineurs were also less likely to report ever being hospitalized for headache compared to migraineurs from Canada and Australia. Further research on the sources of this variability, including the influence of healthcare system design features, and the effects of the variability on outcomes in migraineurs is warranted.

▼ The nominal two-and-a-half year round-trip Mars mission requires extensive infrastructure to transport and safeguard its human crew, thus requiring large amounts of Initial Mass in Low Earth Orbit (IMLEO). Any technologies that can reduce this load may have the potential to realize dramatic savings in overall architecture cost. One such technology is the in-situ production of propellant for the Mars ascent vehicle utilizing Martian resources, such as the atmosphere, rather than transporting the propellant from the Earth's surface to the Martian surface. This topic has previously been studied on the basis of the reduction of the IMLEO, because of the assumption that the reduction in IMLEO would lower Earth-to-orbit launch and space transportation costs more than the increase in in-situ propellant production system production and operations cost. However, with low-cost commercial launch now being considered by NASA, the costs of propellant production on Mars may not be a positive trade for these lower launch costs.
The objective of this research is to evaluate, under uncertainty, an optimal ISPP system for a human-to-Mars mission. To do this, the necessary ISPP approaches and corresponding Mars transportation system architecture (consisting of the Earth-to-orbit, in-space, Mars descent, and ascent transportation systems) must be modeled in such a way that the effects of uncertainty in their performance and mass can be evaluated. With this framework, the sensitivity of the mass, power, volume, and cost of each ISPP approach and transportation architecture includes the uncertainty of its modeling, and the most relevant system architecture dependent parameters for each technology are identified for future research. Additionally, technologies will be compared using this framework to determine which has the greatest chance of success at having the least cost; this design approach will yield a ranked list of preferred ISPP approaches as compared to a non-ISPP baseline approach.
The final product of this research is an evaluation of each technology, including the uncertainty in its modeling parameters, as well as a ranked comparison of multiple ISPP approaches. From this, recommendations for an overall approach to Mars ISPP, as well as the most important technologies to be further researched, will be presented. This research serves as a guide to future mission planners, decision makers, and technology investors in planning the best path for the eventual human exploration of Mars.

▼ Yield loss in maize (Zea mays L.) is well known to be caused by abiotic and biotic stresses. Previous studies have focused, primarily, on the determination of yield loss as a result of stress occurring during the critical reproductive stages, that is, around silking and the grain fill period. No studies have assessed yield loss caused by differing stresses that occur early during the vegetative phase. Studies were conducted during 2012-13 under controlled and field conditions at two locations in Ontario, Canada. Early season stresses (i.e., up to V9 stage of growth) included drought, light quality (red to far red) and early high-plant density while high plant density was considered a season long stress. In this thesis, the hypothesis was tested that if yield is reduced in response to early season stress, then,
resource capture and
resource utilization will be reduced proportionally. The relationship between plant dry matter and floret number follows the classic relationship with a minimum dry matter level required and a plateau. Not all stresses impacted these relationships in the same manner. These results confirm that floret number in maize is established well in advance of flowering and also suggests that floret number is related to plant dry weight sampled between V7 to V9-10 stage of growth. Yield loss in the drought and early high-plant density stress treatments, was caused by reductions in dry matter accumulation and kernel number. Growth rates around silking were reduced and flowering delayed in response to early season stress which explained reductions in kernel set. While ASI was only lengthened by early high density, HI remained unchanged in response to early season stress. Season-long high plant density stress resulted in reduced plant dry matter, and kernel number. Plants presenting low dry matter accumulation in each stage of growth exhibited lower floret and kernel number. Barren plants at maturity showed very low or no dry matter accumulation during the grain filling period. Overall, early season stress reduced
resource capture only, while season long stress defined as high plant density reduced both
resource capture and
utilization.

▼ ãThe shell
utilization of two sympatric hermit carb species was studied in shallow waters of Kaohsiung and Pingtung, southern Taiwan. Principal components, canonical variates and univariate analysis was used to compare three major variables of shell
resource: species, size, and shape between species and sites.
The regression between crab and shell and shell adequacy index (SAI) revealed that two species shared the same
resource which had shell size limitation in the field had different pattern. Shells used by Diogenes rectimanus were larger than those uesd by D. nitidimanus of same size. But the
utilization pattern was the same under a shell sufficient condition in the laboratory, suggesting that there was no
resource partitioning or competition between these two species.
The size of shell composed a continuous morphological overlap at four different sites and shown a good consistency with crab size. This revealed the
utilization of crabs in different size selected different shells and suggested a status of sufficient
resource utilization. Although the shell
resource were highly similar, but different composition of shell species and other factors could caused variances in shell size and shape between four sites, and caused crab size divergence among different populations.

▼ This study assesses the feasibility of designing Seed and Blanket (S&B) Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) to generate a significant fraction of the core power from radial thorium fueled blankets that operate on the Breed-and-Burn (B&B) mode without exceeding the 200 Displacements per Atom (DPA) radiation damage constraint of presently verified cladding materials. The S&B core is designed to have an elongated seed (or “driver”) to maximize the fraction of neutrons that radially leak into the subcritical blanket and reduce neutron loss via axial leakage. The blanket in the S&B core makes beneficial use of the leaking neutrons for improved economics and resource utilization. A specific objective of this study is to maximize the fraction of core power that can be generated by the blanket without violating the thermal hydraulic and material constraints. Since the blanket fuel requires no reprocessing along with remote fuel fabrication, a larger fraction of power from the blanket will result in a lower fuel cycle cost per unit of electricity generated. A unique synergism is found between a low conversion ratio (CR) seed and a B&B blanket fueled by thorium. Among several benefits, this synergism enables the very low leakage S&B cores to have small positive coolant voiding reactivity coefficient and large enough negative Doppler coefficient even when using inert matrix fuel for the seed. The benefits of this synergism are maximized when using an annular seed surrounded by an inner and outer thorium blankets. Two high-performance S&B cores were designed to benefit from this unique synergism: (1) the ultra-long cycle core that features a cycle length of ~7 years; (2) the high-transmutation rate core where the seed fuel features a TRU CR of 0.0. Its TRU transmutation rate is comparable to that of the reference Advanced Burner Reactor (ABR) with CR of 0.5 and the thorium blanket can generate close to 60% of the core power; but requires only one sixth of the reprocessing and fabrication capacity per unit of core power. Nevertheless, these reference cores were designed to set upper bounds on the S&B core performance by using larger height and pressure drop than those of typical SFR design. A study was subsequently undertaken to quantify the tradeoff between S&B core design variables and the core performance. This study concludes that a viable S&B core can be designed without significant deviation from SFR core design practices. For example, the S&B core with 120cm active height will be comparable in volume, HM mass and specific power with the S-PRISM core and could fit within the S-PRISM reactor vessel. 43.1% of this core power will be generated by the once-through thorium blanket; the required capacity for reprocessing and remote fuel fabrication per unit of electricity generated will be approximately one fifth of that for a comparable ABR. The sodium void worth of this 120cm tall S&B core is significantly less positive than that of the reference ABR and the Doppler coefficient is only slightly smaller even though the seed uses a…

▼ A study was conducted to assess the change in bee diversity along a distance gradient from the
Arabuko Sokoke forest and among the three major vegetation types found in the forest. The
floral utilization and resource partitioning among solitary and the honeybees was also studied.
Sampling sites were selected from the three main vegetation types of the forest namely, Mixed
forest, Brachystegia and Cynometra. Each vegetation type had four sampling sites; one sampling
site at the forest margin and three sampling sites located in farmlands selected along a distance
gradient from the forest margin; at 2 km, 4 km, and 6 km respectively. The number of bees and
species collected in four 50 x 6 metres sampling plot at each sampling sites from 0800 hrs1500
hrs on sunny days with fair weather were recorded. The flower cover was estimated as the
number of flowers sampled in ten 1m2 quadrat at each plot. Kruskal- Wallis test was used to test
for significant difference across the distance gradient and among the vegetation types. Bee
diversity was calculated as the Shannon diversity index and similarity in species composition
was calculated with Horn's similarity index. Morisita index was used to calculate the overlap
between the honeybees and the solitary bees in resource use across the distance gradient.
Sixty three bee species belonging to three families, Apidae, Halictidae, and Megachilidae were
found around the Arabuko Sokoke forest. Bee abundance increased significantly across the
gradient from the forest margins (H = 15.055, df = 3, P < 0.01), while the number of species
declined significantly from the forest margins (H = 14.203, df = 3, P< 0.01). Species diversity
decreased significantly across the gradient from the forest margins (H = 19.39 df = 3, P< 0.01).
Based on Horn's index, similarity in bee fauna across the distance gradient from the forest
margins was high, ranged from CH > 0.83 - 0.89. Significantly more honeybees were found at
the farmlands than at the forest margins (H = 9.93, df= 3, P = 0.02).
There was a significant difference in the number of bees and species recorded among the three
vegetation types (H = 37.993 df= 2, P < 0.01) and (H = 10.171, df= 2, P< 0.01) respectively.
Similarity in bee fauna found between the vegetation types was high, CH > 0.80, with Cynometra
and the mixed vegetation types having the most similar bee community, CH = 0.95. Significantly
more member of the family Apidae were found in the mixed forest vegetation type (H = 67.07,
df = 2, P< 0.01), while significantly more members of the family Halictidae were found in the
Brachystegia vegetation type (H = 1l.96, df= 2, P< 0.01).
There was a significant difference in the amount of flower across the distance gradient from the
forest margins (H = 22.776, df = 3, P< 0.01), but not in the number of flowering species.
However the number of flowering species utilized by bees differed significantly across the
distance gradient (H= 22.05, df = 2, P = 0.02). Over 60% of all the bees utilized floral resources

▼ Contemporary temporal trends in utilization of graded exercise stress test (GXT), myocardial perfusion scanning (MPI), stress echocardiography (stress echo), and cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) are unknown. The optimal initial testing strategy to evaluate stable coronary artery disease (CAD) is also unknown. We conducted a repeated cross sectional study of the adult population of Ontario in order to assess the temporal trends in utilization of these modalities and a retrospective inception cohort study in order to compare the relationship between differing initial testing strategies and the presence of obstructive CAD on downstream angiography. Our results indicate stable utilization patterns for GXT and MPI. We had insufficient data to make definitive conclusions regarding the temporal trends for CCTA and stress echo. An initial diagnostic strategy consisting of CCTA, MPI or stress echo was not significantly different than an initial strategy with a GXT in detecting obstructive CAD on downstream angiography.

▼ The Apache Hadoop framework (currently known as YARN) is a widely used open-source implementation of MapReduce (MR). Manual tuning of Hadoop performance is hard and time-consuming so several tuning approaches have been proposed. Most approaches concentrate on optimizing configuration parameters for a given MR job or framework. They seek to construct accurate performance models to find near-optimal parameter settings but inevitably require a time-consuming model-training phase. Changes in MR jobs or their execution environments may require reconstructing or retraining the models.

▼ Additive manufacturing methods have great potential for rapid production of parts and devices in remote areas with limited access to supply chains. This work examines the use of mineral resources for inexpensive and low-energy additive manufacturing. Silica, basalt, and Lunar regolith simulant (LRS) were processed for use as additive manufacturing feedstock in conjunction with polymeric binders. Mineral powders were chemically functionalized and combined with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) at filler loadings up to 5 wt.% to create 3D printed structures using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process. The mechanical properties of the resulting structures were characterized by tensile testing and analysis of fracture surfaces.
Alternatively, processed minerals were used to prepare inks for robocasting using Pluronic F127 hydrogels as a carrier. Minerals were added in increasing concentrations to determine the maximum filler loading that could be used to create an ink with suitable viscosity for the robocasting process. Hydrogels containing 52-57 wt.% mineral fillers were used as feedstock. By sintering the 3D printed green bodies, structural ceramics may be produced using this process. This work provides methods for producing structures and devices on demand in hostile environments through efficient in situ
resource utilization.

▼ For the past decades, data traffic demand considerably increased in volume and quality due to
the advent of capable end-user devices and innovative data services. To accommodate the
highly increasing data traffic volume and customer demand for service with better quality, an
automatic switched optical network (ASON) with different routing and wavelength assignment
(RWA) algorithms and resilience mechanisms are used. Previously different researchers
evaluated performance of different resilience mechanisms and RWA algorithms separately by
considering an ideal highly connected network with ideal uniform traffic demand/connection
request. This issue can force telecom operators including Ethio-telecom to implement their
backbone network based on vendor recommendation.
In this thesis, first, performance of four adaptive RWA algorithms was evaluated considering
blocking probability and average throughput as QoS metrics under different three resilience
mechanisms considering a practical Ethio-telecom north circle backbone network topology and
its traffic demand scenario. Secondly, performance of the three resilience mechanisms was
evaluated under routing algorithm selected from routing algorithm evaluation considering
blocking probability, recoverability and average network throughput as QoS performance
metrics. Finally, network topology connectivity degree effect on the performance of 1+1 DPP
and restoration resilience mechanisms was evaluated by randomly adding 30 unidirectional
links to the reference network topology used in the above evaluations. To evaluate the RWA
algorithms and resilience mechanisms, Net2Plan simulator is used.
The result of the evaluations shows that, at low connected network topology, restoration with
alternate routing has on average 40 % lower blocking probability, higher average throughput
and lower recoverability as compared to the other resilience mechanisms combined with
alternate routing. An increase in network connectivity by 0.9 decreases the blocking probability
and average throughput advantage of restoration by 10%. So considering the possibility of
improving the recoverability of the network by preparing a pool of restoration path prior to
fault occurrence and its ability to protect against double link failure (DLF), restoration with
alternate routing becomes more recommended for low connected network topologies at low
traffic load. But for highly connected network topologies with high traffic load using either
1+1 DPP or hybrid becomes more recommended based on the need for DLF protection.

▼ In image processing operations, each pixel is often treated independently and operated upon by using values of other pixels in the neighborhood. These operations are often called windowed image computations (or neighborhood operations). In this thesis, we examine the implementation of a windowed computation pipeline in an FPGA-based environment. Typically, the image is generated outside the FPGA environment (such as through a camera) and the result of the windowed computation is consumed outside the FPGA environment (for example, in a screen for display or an engine for higher level analysis). The image is typically large (over a million pixels 1000×1000 image) and the FPGA input-output (I/O) infrastructure is quite modest in comparison (typically a few hundred pins). Consequently, the image is brought into the chip a small piece (tile) at a time. We define a handshaking scheme that allows us to construct an FPGA architecture without making large assumptions about component speeds and synchronization. We define a pipeline architecture for windowed computations, including details of a stage to accommodate FPGA pin-limitation and bounded storage. We implement a design to better suit FPGAs where it ensures a smoother (stall-resistant) flow of the computation in the pipeline. Based on the architecture proposed, we have analytically predicted resource usage in the FPGA. In particular, we have shown that for an N×N image processed as n×n tiles on a z-stage windowed computation with parameter w; θ(n2+logN+logz ) pins are used and θ(n2 z) memory is used. We ran simulations that validated these predictions on two FPGAs (Artix-7 and Kintex-7) with different resources. As we had predicted, the pins and distributed memory turned out to be the most used resources. Our simulations have also shown that the operating clock speed of the design is relatively independent of the number of stages in the pipeline; this is in line with what was expected with the handshaking scheme that isolates the timing of communicating modules. Our work, although aimed at FPGAs, could also be applied to any I/O pin-limited devices and memory limited environments.

▼ In order to help the forest industry to revitalize from the 2008 economic recession, this research studied the market potential of firewood and wood pellets as a home heating source. Questionnaires were mailed to 7,000 single family homeowners in rural and suburban Maryland, and 1,184 responses were received (19% response rate). It is estimated that 256,419 cords of firewood and 81,863 tons of wood pellets were burned statewide in the heating season of 2015-2016. The aesthetic value of wood heating is the major motivation; work and mess is the principal barrier. The average volume of wood consumed annually per household is 1.8 cords of firewood or 1.9 tons of wood pellets. The average prices of wood consumed are 192 per cord for firewood and 266 per ton for wood pellets. The threshold prices of electricity, natural gas, oil, and propane for homeowners to switch to wood heating are estimated. Few homeowners know about Maryland Energy Administration’s Clean Burning Wood Stove Grant Program.

▼ To handle the increased traffic demands on cellular networks, ultra-dense and heterogeneous deployments are required. The natural evolution of the existing cellular networks will lead towards the multi-tier structure of overlapping coverage and heterogeneous resources pool. The spatial-temporal traffic dynamics and non-uniformity of traffic cause inefficient utilization of radio resources and energy. A strong desire of finding the way to make an optimal use of diverse network resources while providing satisfactory services to the users which has shifted the interest of researchers towards traffic steering in heterogeneous cellular networks. The concept of traffic steering, which intelligently redistributes traffic across the network entities, and designs optimal management schemes for the heterogeneous networks. The steering technique requires real-time network and user state information for taking the steering decisions which can be achieved by the promising software defined networking (SDN) platform. The idea of integrating SDN concept in cellular networks has gained much interest due to its up-to-date global view, logically centralized but physically distributed architecture, and programmability. In this thesis, various aspects of traffic steering technique and literature review on the integration of SDN in cellular network is presented. The key benefits and challenges of SDN integration in cellular network are briefly described in terms of network architecture design and management. A complete traffic steering framework for SDN based cellular network is proposed by considering both user’s and network current status. Finally, a traffic steering scheme is introduced which maximize network radio resource utilizations by redistributing the user’s traffic to the optimal destination. A comprehensive system level simulation has been conducted to represent the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

▼ Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited chronic disease with recurrent complications, high health care
utilization and excessive costs. Preventative therapies, such as hydroxyurea, are known to prevent or reduce the frequency of SCD complications. The purpose of this study was to determine medication and healthcare services
utilization for the management of SCD, in terms of index and subsequent therapies and services. This thesis also examined whether there were differences SCD-related prescription and healthcare
utilization among patients of different age groups. Texas Medicaid prescription and medical claims from September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients aged 2-63 years with a primary diagnosis of SCD (ICD-9: 282.6x, ICD-10: D57.1) and receiving one or more SCD-related medications (hydroxyurea, opioid or non-opioid analgesics) were included. The primary outcomes were type of SCD index drug, adherence to hydroxyurea, days’ supply of opioid and non-opioid analgesics,
utilization of SCD-related emergency department, inpatient and outpatient visits, and type of SCD index and subsequent healthcare services. A total of 2,339 patients were included in the study. For the index drug, the majority of the patients were prescribed opioid analgesics (45.7%), followed by non-opioid analgesics (36.6%), and only 6.5 percent were prescribed hydroxyurea. Only 20.7 percent had a hydroxyurea medication possession ratio (MPR) ≥ 80%, with highest mean adherence among children. Days’ supply of opioid and non-opioid analgesics was highest in older adults of age group 41-63. Healthcare service
utilization was relatively high (compared to the general population) among age groups 2-12, 18-25 and 26-40. Slightly over one-third of the population (N=801; 34.3%) had either an index ED visit (74.7%) or ≥1 hospitalization (25.3%). In conclusion, patients with SCD enrolled in Texas Medicaid have low
utilization of and adherence to hydroxyurea. Interventions to increase its adoption and adherence could benefit patients by helping them better managing their SCD complications. Opioid use is prevalent among all patients with SCD, and generally, opioid use increased with increasing age groups. Patients with SCD also have a high use of healthcare services such as emergency department, inpatient and outpatient visits, especially among adolescents and young adults. Further research is needed to determine how to better manage patients with SCD, particularly adolescents and young adults who may be transitioning from pediatric to adult care

▼ Over the recent years, the worldâs major regional economiesâ forums have been focused on seeking new growth strategies for sustainability as the theme for discussion. Due to the impact and threat of global warming and climate change, the green issue has gained extensive attention by these global institutions and economies. The new go green initiative has created an unprecedented challenge for the business nowadays. This awareness resulted in public voice calling for the importance of corporate social and environmental responsibility, which posed serious pressure and danger for the survival of the enterprises. Therefore, companies nowadays must develop and adopt new management approaches that comprehensively take into consideration of the economic, environmental and
resource development aspects altogether so that the objective of corporate greening can be achieved. Seeing that the development process for corporate greening requires a new management paradigm, this research seeks to explore and investigate the mechanism behind existing benchmarking green corporationsâ management approaches and propose an ideal and feasible new green management paradigm for corporate greening.
This study adopts a mixed methods research design, and by applying multivariate qualitative research method dividing the research process in two stages. The first stage uses the organic agricultural enterprises in Taiwan, Japan, Germany and Mainland China as the object of this research and investigates their unique green management paradigm conceptual framework, called the organic-minded management. The second stage expands the research object to perform the preliminary testing, as well as the addition and correction of propositions. The research proposes that the organic-minded management framework is composed of three constructs. Additionally, this research further adopt the
resource utilization and institutional compliance as the two major dimensions for corporate greening, resulting in four different types corporations, namely a) conflicting and consumptive corporation (Low compliance-high consumption); b) harmonious and consumptive corporation (High compliance- High consumption); c) conflicting and thrifty corporation (Low compliance-low consumption); and d) harmonious and thrifty corporation (High compliance-low consumption). Hence, corporate positioning and greening strategy formulation can be facilitated through the classification of corporations.
Based on the research findings, this study proposes an âorganic-minded managementâ conceptual framework based on practical experience. Additionally, the implications and suggestions for academic research and management practice on corporate greening are also discussed.

▼ Little is known about the space use of breeding Common Ravens (Corvus corax) in Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) despite their identification as nest predators of the Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus). We used radio telemetry to examine home range and habitat use of breeding Common Ravens in RNSP during 2009 (n = 3) and 2010 (n = 8). We estimated home range and core-use area size, calculated home range overlap between adjacent ravens, quantified site fidelity by calculating overlap between years for the same individuals, and used
resource utilization functions to examine raven
resource use within the home range. Average home range size of ravens in RNSP was 182.5 ha (range 82-381 ha) and average core-use area was 31.4 ha (range 5-71 ha). Home range use of individual ravens was generally higher near roads (n = 6), old-growth edge (n = 7), bare ground (n = 6), and in mixed hardwood (n = 5) and prairie habitats (n = 5). Use generally decreased near human use areas (n = 5) and in old-growth habitat (n = 5). While we found little overlap between adjacent ravens, the areas of overlap were centered on anthropogenic food sources that occurred at adjacent territory boundaries. Removal of anthropogenic food sources along roads and in human use areas within and adjacent to Marbled Murrelet nesting areas may reduce raven use of these areas and thereby reduce potential encounters of ravens and murrelet nests.

▼ Introduction: Atypical Antipsychotics (AAPs) are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. AAPs are commonly used off-label to treat depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia due to lack of alternative treatment options and treatment resistance. Concerns for off-label use arise since AAPs increase the risk of cardiovascular events and death. The
objectives were 1) describe patterns of RU and costs among off-label AAPs users in a nationally representative population 2) identify prevalence of off-label use in the Medicare population 3) compare RU and costs between off-label AAPs users and non-users with mental health conditions in Medicare.
Methods: For the first objective, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) datasets were used. AAPs users greater than 18 years were identified in this cross-sectional study. Generalized Linear Models (GLM) were used to estimate costs among users and non-users after controlling for age sex, gender, insurance type, marriage status, income and comorbidity index. For the second and third objective, Medicare datasets were used to identify prevalence, RU, and costs of off-label use in Medicare beneficiaries 18 years and older. RU and costs between propensity score matched AAPs user and non-user cohorts were compared in a retrospective cohort study.
Results: The adjusted odds of having an office-based outpatient (OR=2.47, 95%CI: 1.55-3.92) or inpatient (OR=1.63, 95%CI: 1.26-2.10) visit were significantly higher among off-label AAPs users. Adjusted office-based visit (1,943 vs. 1,346), prescription (4,153 vs. 1,252) and total (10,694 vs. 4,823) costs were significantly higher among users (p<0.0001).
Among Medicare beneficiaries, approximately 37% of AAPs users had no FDA approved diagnosis. The typical off-label user was a white 70-year-old male. Common off-label uses were depression, anxiety and neurotic disorders and dementia. Off-label AAPs users had significantly higher mental health outpatient (461 vs 297), prescription (2,349 vs 282) and total (3,665 vs 1,297) costs per beneficiary than non-users. About 30% of AAPs users had at least one mental health outpatient visit during the year versus 23% of non-users; no significant differences were found in inpatient visits. AAPs non-users had significantly higher all-cause inpatient costs (6,945 vs. 4,841) per beneficiary (p
Conclusion: In a nationally representative population comprising a younger age group AAPs users had higher all-cause RU and total costs than non-users. Off-label prescribing of AAPs continued to be a prevalent practice affecting 37% of Medicare AAPs users. Off-label AAPs users had higher mental health costs but no significant differences in all-cause total health care costs in a Medicare population. Off-label use of AAPs can be a cost-effective option if future research shows off-label use…

▼ Abstract
In recent years, along with the explosive growth of the new energy vehicles market in China, the volume of the electric-vehicle battery as the driving force of new energy vehicles is equally rising. In the meanwhile, the recycling of spent car batteries has also been put on the agenda. The service life of electric-vehicle batteries in electrical vehicles is generally around 5 years. Therefore, it is widely expected in the industry that the first batch of electric-vehicle batteries entering the market will soon trigger a âwave of scrappingâ from 2018, and the market of new energy vehicle battery recycling will begin to boom.
Electric-vehicle battery recycling is the key link in the formation of a closed-loop of electric-vehicle battery industry chain. It is of great value in terms of environmental protection,
resource recovery, and improving the life cycle value of electric-vehicle batteries. Electric-vehicle battery recycling consists of two activities: cascade
utilization and
resource recovery. Usually, when the remaining capacity of electric-vehicle batteries is reduced to 70%-80% of the initial capacity, they are no longer be able to meet the requirements of the electric vehicles. However, the spent batteries after being tested, screened, and reorganized, are still capable of being used in the areas of low-speed electric vehicles, backup power supplies, and power storage where the operating conditions are relatively good and the requirements for battery performance are lower. With the increasing promotion and application of new energy vehicles, the concept of cascade
utilization of electric-vehicle battery has emerged and attracted widespread attention. In the current background of unclear battery recycling model, the attending entrepreneurs have reached a consensus that the establishment of a complete battery recycling industry chain requires joint promotions in technology, market, and policy.
In the aspect of the new energy vehicle industry chain, the recycling of electric-vehicle batteries is a final and indispensable step. In recent years, the energy storage market has considerably grown, which generated a great demand for the selected electric-vehicle batteries. In terms of the total value of recycling, the volume may reach 10 billion. This reflects an enormous value of reuse. Then, the batteries will be scrapped further and metals such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium, iron, and aluminum will be extracted from used batteries. It is predicted that the scale of the recycling market created by batteries will exceed 50 billion dollars by 2020 and reach 125 billion dollars by 2023.

▼ Implementation of a hospital-wide standardized feeding tube pathway is associated with a reduction in health care
utilization Richards MK, McAteer JP, Li C, Shaw DW, Wahbeh GT, Foti JL, Melzer L, BA, Goldin AB Background Relatively recent medical advances such as percutaneous endoscopic, image-guided, laparoscopic and even robotic gastrostomy tube (GT) placement have become common among pediatric patients. These minimally invasive approaches may be quick to perform and simple to complete, but they are not without subsequent complications such as infection, leakage, device malfunction, dislodgement, hemorrhage and intra-abdominal organ injury. In addition, many of the procedures require planned interventions such as tube exchanges or conversions from gastrostomy to gastrojejunostomy. We hypothesized that implementation of a hospital-wide clinical standardized work (CSW) feeding tube pathway would be associated with a reduction in hospital
resource utilization. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study comparing all children undergoing GT or gastrojejunostomy tube (GJ) placement following implementation of the hospital-wide clinical standardized work pathway (CSW) from June 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014 to those placed in a previous time period (January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2011). We limited follow up time to 365 days in both groups. Our primary outcome was the change in the rate of hospital
resource utilization, defined as 1) GT/GJ-related emergency department visits, 2) planned events, or 3) unplanned events before and after implementation using adjusted Poisson regression. We also compared the time to first event between cohorts using adjusted Cox regression to understand the relative number of children requiring repeat
utilization (p<0.05). Adjustment factors included age, ASA class, gender, insurance, race, comorbidities and GT/GJ at initial placement. Results Prior to CSW implementation, 145 (48.7%) devices were placed surgically, 113 (37.9%) endoscopically, and 40 (13.4%) with an image-guided technique. After implementation, 105 (73.4%) were placed surgically, 23 (16.1%) endoscopically, and 15 (10.5%) with an image-guided technique. Prior to implementation, 174/298 (58.4%) patients required additional hospital
utilization compared to 58/143 (40.6%) after implementation. Poisson regression demonstrated that following implementation, the rate of
resource utilization decreased by over 50% (Incidence Rate Ratio: 0.45; 95%CI 0.36-0.57; p<0.001). The risk of at least one additional feeding tube related intervention or emergency department visit was reduced by over 30% based on Cox regression (Hazard Ratio: 0.62; 95%CI 0.45-0.85; p=0.005). This demonstrated that fewer children required at least one repeat GT/GJ-related hospital
utilization event after algorithm implementation. Conclusions Care of this complex and heterogeneous patient population is currently spread among multiple providers and specialties leading to variability in the pre-operative workup, intra-operative technique, and post operative care. Our…

▼ The burden of death and disability due to traumatic brain injury is increasing in low and middle income countries. The optimal management strategies and
utilization of medical resources in
resource limited settings are unknown. This multinational prospective observational study evaluated the association between resources and outcomes from severe TBI in South America. 203 patients with severe TBI were treated in a designated high or low
resource setting, reflecting variation in ICP monitoring technology. There were significant differences in prehospital transport, ICU admission, and use of ICP monitoring between study groups that may impact outcomes. Patients treated in a high
resource setting had significant improvements in functional outcome, but not mortality, at 6 months post-injury. Multivariate regression models showed that
resource setting, independent of ICP monitoring, predicted functional outcome at 6 months after severe TBI. Understanding the characteristics that explain this variation and guiding appropriate
resource allocation may improve outcomes.

▼ The potential for NEAs as targets for space resource utilization has been explored. Water and PGEs have been identified as resources with potential profitability in existing markets. Of the ~18,000 asteroids in the known NEA catalogue, seven and three are expected to be prospective for water and PGEs when accounting for size, resource concentration, and accessibility. Improved NEA discovery campaigns, with emphasis on spectroscopy, and advancements in space transportation and autonomous robotic technology are crucial to future success of NEA resource utilization. LA-ICP-MS was used to evaluate main-group pallasites (PMG) for PGE potential. Bulk metal concentrations of most PGEs are lower than in iron meteorites, making the associated parent body(ies) of the PMG suboptimal for resource utilization. Average subsolidus partition coefficients are 1 < DT/K(Ir) < DT/K(Pt) ≈ DT/K(Os) < DT/K(Rh) < DT/K(Ru) < DT/K(Pd) and appear to be applicable to all instances of taenite/kamacite, regardless of parent body conditions.

▼ NASA and other international space agencies have identified a return to the lunar surface as a primary objective for the coming decade. Speculation about resources in space – from platinum-group metals to water ice – has permeated space-focused media, culminating with the establishment of a price for water delivered in low-earth orbit. Much of the discussion about space resources focuses on the potential of regolith (extraterrestrial soil) to provide valuable materials, yet regolith properties are poorly characterized at environmental extremes. Extraction concepts require detailed knowledge of the mechanical properties of dry and ice-saturated regolith. This study aims to characterize two lunar regolith simulants using a specially-designed penetrometer at various conditions of temperature, pressure, density, and ice content. We measured penetration resistance and load-relaxation behavior for both dry simulants under constant displacement rate penetration at pressures ranging from 1E-5 Torr to 700 Torr and at relative densities of ~20% and ~80%. Penetration resistance was sensitive to density and insensitive to test pressure and simulant type. Relaxation was sensitive to all three conditions, differentiable using elastic parameters of a best-fit mechanical relaxation model, and may also be tentatively correlated to more fundamental soil mechanics properties such as shear moduli. Furthermore, we measured penetration resistance and relaxation behavior for a basaltic lunar simulant at ~300 mTorr pressure, ~110 K sample temperature, 170 K to 190 K probe temperature, and ice contents of 0% to 12% and 100%. Penetration resistance and relaxation behavior both showed sensitivity to ice content, with parameters of best-fit curve models offering simple empirical predictors of saturation. A critical ice content of 1% to 3% is identified as being fundamentally influenced by the filling of substantial pore space with grouting ice. A decrease in viscoelastic behavior of high ice content samples at cryogenic temperatures is noted, and inhibition of relaxation mechanisms due to activation-energy-based temperature effects is demonstrated in dry, ice-free simulant. Additional research across the spectrum of ice saturations, temperatures, and pressure conditions likely to be found in extraterrestrial environments is suggested to improve upon these results and advance the potential use of this technology in future exploratory missions.

▼ Ultra-wideband (UWB) communications has emerged as a promising technology for high data rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs). Several proposals for UWB-based WPANs have been made. One widely popular proposal is based on multi-channel OFDM. This proposal was recently standardized by European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA). In this dissertation, we address several important aspects that impact the performance of OFDM-based UWB systems. First, we propose an interference management distributed reservation protocol (IMDRP) for these communications. IM-DRP aims at reducing interference between uncooperative beacon groups that operate simultaneously over the same area. We then integrate IM-DRP into the design of a rate adaptation strategy that exploits the multi-rate capability of OFDM-based UWB systems. Besides maintaining a target packet error rate, our proposed strategy attempts to reduce the required reservation time over a link, hence allowing more links to be concurrently activated. Second, we propose a novel overhearing-aware joint routing and rate selection (ORRS) scheme. For a given source-destination pair, ORRS aims at selecting a path and its transmission rates that achieve the minimum channel reservation time, leading to low blocking rate for prospective reservations and high network throughput. At the same time, ORRS takes advantage of packet overhearing, a typical characteristic of broadcast communications. Finally, we propose a novel
resource utilization mechanism (RUM) for improving the throughput in multi-rate UWB-based WPANs. RUM exploits opportunistic-relaying and time-spreading techniques to improve link reliability and increase the transmission rate, and hence network throughput. Simulation results indicate that our proposed protocols and schemes achieve significant throughput improvement compared with other protocols.

▼ In this thesis, we study the task scheduling problem in vehicular clouds. It falls in the category of unrelated parallel machine scheduling problems. Resource assignment in vehicular clouds must deal with the transient nature of the cloud resources and a relaxed definition of non-preemptive tasks. Despite a rich literature in machine scheduling and grid computing, the resource assignment problem in vehicular clouds has not been examined yet. We show that even the problem of finding a minimum cost schedule for a single task over unrelated machines is NP-hard. We then provide a fully polynomial time approximation scheme and a greedy approximation for scheduling a single task. We extend these algorithms to the case of scheduling n tasks. We validate our algorithms through extensive simulations that use synthetically generated data as well as real data extracted from vehicle mobility and grid computing workload traces. Our contributions are, to the best of our knowledge, the first quantitative analysis of the computational power of vehicular clouds.

▼ Introduction: Studies have shown that health
care disparities continue to persist in the cancer population in
the United States. Few studies have been done on disparities in
health care
resource utilization and expenditures for prostate
cancer patients. Examining and reporting potential disparities is
important in order to eliminate them. Objectives:
To examine possible demographic, socioeconomic and insurance
disparities while controlling for self-reported health status and
confounding factors, in health care
resource utilization &
expenditures among prostate cancer patients in the United States
using the 2000-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)
database. Methods: The MEPS 2000-2008 database
was used with a sample of 1018 subjects who had a reported
condition of prostate cancer. Logistic and negative binomial survey
regression was used to examine differences in
utilization. Ordinary
least squares survey regression was used to examine differences in
expenditures. Medical provider office visits, hospital outpatient
visits, hospital inpatient stays and prescribed medicines were
separately regressed against race, ethnicity, age, urban/rural
location, educational level, poverty status and insurance type,
along with controlling for self-reported health
status. Results: Black prostate cancer patients
had a statistically significantly lower likelihood of having
office-based medical provider visits compared to white patients (p
= 0.0014), while Hispanic prostate cancer patients had a
statistically significantly lower likelihood of having hospital
outpatient visits compared to non-Hispanic patients (p = 0.0087).
Statistically significant differences in expenditures were also
found, where urban prostate cancer patients had statistically
significantly higher hospital outpatient visit expenditures
compared to rural patients (p <
0.0001). Conclusion: Significant disparities
continue to persist in the prostate cancer population, even when
controlling for confounding factors. Future studies examining
reasons as to why there are disparities are
needed.
