Resumo: Neste trabalho se desenvolveu um processo que permite a convers?o do res?duo de craqueamento catal?tico, denominado de ?leo decantado, em piches de petr?leo precursores de fibras de carbono. Tamb?m, obteve-se mono-filamentos de fibra de carbono a partir de precursores a base de piche de petr?leo isotr?pico e mesof?sico, desenvolvidos em escala de laborat?rio, e de mesofase importada utilizado como padr?o. O presente processo envolve a destila??o simples do ?leo decantado, ? press?o atmosf?rica e/ou sob v?cuo, e posterior tratamento t?rmico do piche de petr?leo resultante a uma temperatura entre 350?C e 450?C, e sob fluxo de g?s inerte, objetivando a produ??o de piche de petr?leo mesof?sico. O processo compreende ainda a fia??o continua de fibra de piche e de mesofase, atrav?s da fIa??o por fus?o, seguida de tratamentos t?rmicos de estabiliza??o em atmosfera oxidante, e posterior carboniza??o em atmosfera inerte. Os piches de petr?leo resultantes deste processo, que apresentam propriedades f?sico-qu?micas especificas, podem ser utilizados em substitui??o aos piches de alcatr?o de hulha como agentes impregnantes e/ou aglomerantes na fabrica??o de eletrodos para a ind?stria de a?o e de ferro ligas, e em especial na ind?stria de alum?nio prim?rio e, tamb?m, como mat?ria-prima na ind?stria de materiais carbonos os avan?ados; Abstract: The main objectives in this study are the process development to convert decanted oil into petroleum pitches and monofilament carbon fiber obtaining both from isotropic and mesophase petroleum pitch precursors. Decanted oil is the residue from the petroleum catalytic cracking unit. Carbon fibers were also produced using commercial mesophase made from naphthalene and compared to those ones from decanted oil. The first step in the process is decanted oil distillation under vacuum or atmospheric pressure to produce the pitch; the second one is the pitch heat treatment in the temperature range of 350?C to 450?C under inert gas (N2) pressure to produce the mesophase pitch. Isotropic and mesophase pitches are continuously weaved by melted wiring followed by heat treatment in oxidative environment to reach the stabilization and finally carbonized under inert gas environment. Petroleum pitches produced from decanted oil in the process developed here have specific physical-chemical properties and can be used to replace coal tar pitches as impregnation agent and/or binders for electrode manufacture to steel and iron-alloy industries, specially for primary aluminum production.
