l'utilisateur.

▼ This thesis explores the role and
relevance of art
museums in todays’ society through nine online video interviews
with Californian museum directors, programmers and a curator, as
well as, architects and other experts. These videos live on a
website I have created, The Relevant Art Museum. ❧ My interest in
the
subject of museum
relevance began when I moved from Finland to
Los Angeles for ten months on a fellowship for a Master’s degree
program at USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism. In Finland, recent
public debate had been raging over whether or not Helsinki should
acquire a Guggenheim museum. When I landed in Los Angeles in August
2012, the local art world there, too, was in turmoil because the
Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) had just forced the resignation
of its long-time chief curator, Paul Schimmel. Even though the two
discussions seemed at first worlds apart, I realized there were
many commonalities – one of them being the question of museums’
“raison d’être.” ❧ The
relevance of a cultural institution is hard
to measure, as it means different things for different museums
depending on their mission, audience and location. For this project
I chose to look through the lens of Southern California. California
is home for 135,000 arts-related businesses, organizations and
institutions (Americans for the Arts 2012). In comparison to
Finland, Southern Californian museums experiment a lot with
audience engagement and offer a wide range of public programming
from yoga classes to concerts in order to acquire and sustain
relevance. Of the nine interviewees, most do not view the art in
their museums as a sufficient public program. Most believe that it
is their obligation as museums to provide additional services
surrounding their exhibitions and permanent collections that
contribute toward making their museums essential to civic and
public life. By asking people to participate in a variety of
activities, California museums hope to be effective institutionally
for adding value to people’s lives. ❧ In alignment with the museums
I have covered in this journalism thesis project, I too invite the
audience to participate. Visitors to my website may comment and
share their views, as well as add to and follow its Pinterest board
created in collaboration with the existing Pinterest users. The
Internet and social media extend the journalism story, and enhance
the visit to museums by collecting and sharing relevant – as well
as random – information.

▼ The main purpose of this study was to investigate the
relevance of Master’s theses to the Degree Awarded: the Case of College of Education and Institute of Educational Research at AAU. A mixed method approach was employed to collect and analyze data for the study. Data was collected from a total of 111 participants (30 instructors and 81 graduate students) drawn from the Institute of Educational Research and College of Education and Behavioral Studies using both open and closed ended questionnaire. Additionally, the researcher reviewed master’s theses reports of the 2011/2012 graduate students from the Departments of Educational Planning and Management, Curriculum and Teacher Professional Development Studies and the Institute of Educational Research. The findings of data analysis showed that the
relevance and quality of the research carried out by graduate students at the sample programs were not to the required level. The response of the participants in general indicated that they were not satisfied about the
relevance of their MA research studies. Specifically, inadequacy of funding, lack of strict admission policy and criteria for topic selection, shortage of time, the overload of advisors, poor research skill of MA students and some instructors, absence of research policy frame works in which all researchers should follow, lack of incentives or rewards for the excellent ones (researchers), weak controlling system of research activities, repetitions of similar research papers and plagiarism were mentioned as the main challenges. Finally, recommendations to improve the current situation are forwarded based on the findings.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine
relevance and quality of research undertaken by
Master’s students in the years from 2009 to 2011 in the department of Physics and
Mathematics education. The study employed a mixed methods approach and data collected
using questionnaires, interview together with relevant Documents. The participants of the
study included instructors, research supervisors and research examiners of Addis Ababa
University, Office for the Preparation of education policy, Office for the curriculum
preparation, Higher Education
Relevance and Quality Agency (HERQA), Ministry of Science
and Technology, Rules and Regulation of the University and research undertaken by Master’s
students. All data was analyzed using quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings of the
study showed that
relevance and quality status of research undertaken by Master’s students
was poor. The major factors that contributed to the problem include inadequate interaction
between the university and its stakeholders, lack of research funding, heavy load and extra
university duty of supervisors, limited research skills of the candidate (students) and time
constraints. The University has rules and regulations that clearly identified thematic areas of
research but it was ineffective or failed to ensure those thematic areas in to action. To
overcome the condition mentioned above, the researcher suggested that the University or its
departments familiarize research thematic domain to the students before they engage in title
submission and both the university and its stakeholders would be better if they work together.

▼ In the past decade, the prosperity of the World Wide Web has led to fast explosion
of information, and there is a long-standing demand on how to access such a huge
volume of information effectively and efficiently. Information Retrieval (IR) aims to
tackle the challenge by exploring approaches to obtain relevant information items (e.g.,
documents) relevant to a given information need (e.g., query) from a huge collection
of textual data (e.g., the Web). Named entity (e.g., person, location, product, event,
organization) is a type of term compound widely existing in queries and documents.
Recent advances in Information Extraction recently make it possible to extract entities
from large volume of free text efficiently, and the research community pays more
attention on exploring whether entities would contribute to the retrieval effectiveness.
In this thesis, we investigate how to leverage entities to improve retrieval in
several directions. We start with finding entities with certain semantic relation, which
aims at retrieving entities and their associated attributes to meet user’s information
need directly. This is different from traditional search paradigm in which only documents
are retrieved. Entity retrieval is performed by first retrieving a list of documents
and extracting entities from those documents. We propose a novel probabilistic framework
which leverages supporting documents as bridge to model the
relevance between
query and entities and rank entities accordingly.
On the other side, we also explore how to leverage entities to improve effectiveness
of ad hoc document retrieval in two directions. The first direction is entity-centric
query expansion. We find related entities of query, and perform query expansion using
the names and relations of related entities. Significant improvements over several
state-of-the-art feedback models could be observed on multiple data collections. Besides,
we explore another direction: entity-centric
relevance modeling. We propose a
novel retrieval approach, i.e., Latent Entity Space (LES), which models the
relevance
by leveraging entity profiles to represent semantic content of documents and queries.
Experimental results over several TREC collections show that LES is effective on capturing
latent semantic content and can significantly improve the search accuracy of
several state-of-the-art retrieval models for entity-bearing queries.
This thesis presents a series of research efforts on entity centric information
retrieval in several directions, and reveals promising potential of entities on improving
the retrieval effectiveness. With the fast curation of high-quality knowledge base, more
information about entities could be easily accessed and integrated into retrieval models.
We hope our work could serve as guideline for future work on leveraging entities to
improve information retrieval in more applications.

▼ Higher education in accounting faces a challenge to shift its emphasis from
reproducing technical knowledge to developing personal capabilities such as
critical thinking, creative thinking, problem-solving, communication and
teamwork. The educational psychology literature suggests students will not
make the cognitive effort to develop personal capabilities unless they frrst
experience a deep approach to learning; and the experience of high-level
relevance structure, high-level conception of learning and intrinsic
motivation strongly support deep learning. This study examines how
accounting students can be supported to experience high-level
relevance
structure, high-level conception of learning, intrinsic motivation and deep
learning in the context of a university accounting course.
Phenomenography is used to study the experience of learning of students in
a third year undergraduate accounting course into which an integrated set of
interventions involving Assessment, Teamwork, Teacher-Student
Relationship and Instruction was introduced. An assignment in five stages
and five session preparation assignments, supplemented with a focus group
and surveys of students, identified and captured the ways students
experience key aspects of how they learn. A key fmding of this study is that
it is possible to transform the design and delivery of a single university
course to support a large proportion of students to experience change in how
they learn accounting (and, in particular, to experience deep learning)
through the careful adaptation of education theory. An implication of this
study is the need to support students to experience change in how they learn
in frrst year courses to enable them to develop personal capabilities in their
later university studies.

▼ In text classification, labeling features is often less time consuming than labeling entire documents. In situations where very little labeled training data is available, feature
relevance feedback has the potential to dramatically increase classification performance. We review previous work on incorporating feature
relevance feedback in the form of labeled features and introduce a new method, the Feature Contrast Method, for using feature
relevance feedback with locally weighted logistic regression. We show that our method is responsive to user feedback and significantly outperforms previously developed feature
relevance feedback methods while remaining robust to noise in feature and training data. We also highlight several key issues that affect the performance of feature feedback methods.

▼ The purpose of this Dissertation is to examine the link between the characteristics of an audit committee and the value
relevance of accounting information. The study is carried out in with a sample of 105 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange during 2007-2009. This study uses primary variables audit committee financial literacy and audit committee independence to answer the research question - what is the effect of audit committee expertise on the value
relevance of accounting earnings. Value
relevance is measured by regressing stock prices on earning and book values following the Ohlson's Model (1995) that has established an ideal relationship between share prices and accounting measures. Findings from the present study of pooled regression do not support Ohlson's hypothesis. Instead, they reveal a lack of affiliation between audit committee characteristics and the value
relevance of accounting information in New Zealand. The results show no positive effect of audit committee expertise on the value
relevance of accounting earnings.

▼ In this thesis, I examine the book The Handmaid’s Tale and the first two seasons of the television series adaptation made from it. Margaret Atwood wrote the dystopian story of The Handmaid’s Tale in the 1980’s inspired by, among other things, the rise of the religious right in the United States. The television series adaptation based on the book premiered on the streaming service Hulu in April 2017. The series was renewed for a second season less than a month later due to its popularity. The first season included most of the plot of the novel, and the second season continued the story forward. The television show has been called extremely relevant in the current society of the United States.
The aim of this thesis is to study what has changed and what has been changed when making this television series into a relevant adaptation of the book. I will look at what kinds of changes the adapters have made to the story and the characters and what the reasons behind these changes are. Instead of individual scenes, I focus on a collection of larger themes and the way they are handled in the television adaptation.
The theoretical framework consists mainly of adaptational theory, with an emphasis on texts from Linda Hutcheon and Robert Stam, and a collection of academic articles written about The Handmaid’s Tale. Some chapters also include specific theories that are relevant to the theme in question, such as Foucault’s theory of discourse and power in the chapter concerning language and thought and the control imposed on them in both versions of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The analysis section of the thesis is divided into three parts. The first discusses three themes that are present in both the novel and the television series but are represented in different ways in the two versions. These themes are the agency of female characters, religion, and language and thought. The second part discusses two themes that have been added or greatly expanded in the television series compared to the book, which are sexual minorities, and diplomacy and media. The third part discusses the decision to omit the epilogue of the book from the television series, and how this affects the story.
As has been theorized in the adaptational field, multiple different factors affect the adapters’ choices during an adaptation process. This was found to be true in this study as well. The culture in which an adaptation is made affects the adaptation itself, and this is especially true for The Handmaid’s Tale, where the story is moved from the near future of the 1980’s to the near future of the 2010’s. Situating the story close to the current day allows the adapters to include such relevant themes as the overturning of the same-sex marriage in the show. During the recent years, viewers of the television series have been worried that women’s rights, especially reproductive rights and abortion, are under attack from the religious right. This has led to demonstrators wearing clothes fashioned after the dresses of the Handmaids from the television series in women’s…

▼ Within the professions, writers are expected to express themselves in certain ways, often within genres that are bound by conventions, including linguistic register. The student entering a profession learns those genres as if they are mandatory and static, and conforming or failing to conform to conventions is believed to have ties to career consequences. However, new members of a profession come to it with other habitual language practices affected—according to previous research—by the writer’s gender. Rhetorical genre theory and disciplinary, professional, and technical communication theory do not offer a full account for the ways in which these old habits and new conventions must interact, and previous research in gender and language does not fully account for how gendered persons write when confronted with high-stakes convention- bound writing tasks. I used tools from statistics and natural language processing (NLP) to assess stylistic features that previous research has associated with gender differences in written language: I applied those tools to texts created by law students near the end of their first year of study in the genre of a court memorandum, and I found there was no pattern of difference between male and female writers in these texts. I propose a “cognitive pragmatic rhetorical” (CPR) theory, grounded in work of Straßheim (2010), who attempted to bridge the relevance philosophy of Alfred Schutz (Schutz, 1964, 1966, 1973) and the Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson (1995); I have extended Straßheim’s work with insights from rhetoric and cognitive science. CPR theory explains that these apprentice members of a professional community will expend great effort to conform to its conventions and genres because of the students’ goals and the practical effects that depend on conformity. Consequently, we expect them to abandon gendered linguistic habits, at least while they are engaged in early training. This dissertation demonstrates a methodologically rigorous gender-difference study; offers evidence for an “anti-essentialist” view of gender differences in communication; and gives insight into the process by which apprentice members of a profession may adjust their communicative processes in response to their training. It demonstrates the utility of CPR theory and NLP tools in scholarly inquiries in rhetoric and disciplinary, professional, and technical communication.

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2014.
With the advancement of high-throughput sequencing technologies, a new era of "big data" biological research has dawned. However, the abundance of biological data presents many challenges in their analysis and it has proven very difficult to extract important information out of the data. One approach to this problem is to use the methods of machine learning.
In this dissertation, we describe novel probabilistic kernel-based learning methods and demonstrate their practical applicability by solving major bioinformatics problems at the transcriptome and proteome levels where the resulting tools are expected to help biologists further elucidate the important information contained in their data.
The proposed binary classification method, the Classification Relevance Units Machine (CRUM), employs the theory of kernel and empirical Bayesian methods to achieve non-linear classification and high generalization. We demonstrate the practical applicability of CRUM by applying it to the prediction of protein phosphorylation sites, which helps explain the mechanisms that control many biochemical processes.
Then we develop an extension of CRUM to solve multiclass problems, called the Multiclass Relevance Units Machine (McRUM). McRUM uses the error correcting output codes framework to decompose a multiclass problem into a set of binary problems. We devise a linear-time algorithm to aggregate the results into the final probabilistic multiclass prediction to allow for predictions in large scale applications. We demonstrate the practical applicability of McRUM through a solution to the identification of mature microRNA (miRNA) and piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) in small RNA sequencing datasets. This provides biologists a tool to help discover novel miRNA and piRNA to further understand the molecular processes of the organisms they study.

▼ The goal of this thesis is to propose that resemblance plays an important role in human communication. Saussure proposed a characteristic principle of the linguistic sign: that connections between linguistic codes and the objects they signify are arbitrary; however, I intend to show that resemblance, which I define as the visual or aural similarity between a stimulus, the thought it is intended to activate, and the real world target that utterance is about, is an important part of human communication and should be taken into consideration when defining language and proposing theories of human communication.
I have chosen
Relevance Theory as the framework for this analysis because it highlights the importance of inferential communication. According to
Relevance Theory, human communication is guided by expectations of
relevance, a balance between cognitive effects (information the addressee finds worthwhile) and processing effort (the amount of work required to understand that information). Human communication reduces the amount of processing effort through conventionalization; words signify concepts, starting points from which inference can be used to arrive at a communicator's intended meaning. I suggest that the range of human perception and experience acts as common ground between communicators, providing a shared context between communicator and addressee and reducing what must be explicitly communicated. Essentially, resemblance between an utterance and an intended thought performs a similar function to conventionalization, activating concepts from shared context and providing a starting point for inferential communication, guiding addresses to the communicator's intended meaning.
My claim that resemblance has a role to play in human communication raises significant questions about the widely held stance that language is inherently arbitrary. I have proposed that signs can meaningfully resemble the things they signify; if this is true, we must consider the implications for modern linguistic analysis and adjust linguistic theory to accurately account for the use of resemblance in human communication.

▼ This dissertation consists of two essays. The first
essay examines the proportional
relevance of accounting data and
so-called “other” information. The Ohlson (1995) model provides a
representation of firm value in terms of accounting fundamentals
and “other” forward-looking information (?t) not yet reflected in
accounting numbers. Based on this framework, this paper proposes a
measure of proportional
relevance (R2%) to examine the relative
weight that investors assign to accounting data vs. “other”
information (?t). Using this metric, this study examines whether
the mix of information used by investors changed over time, and
whether there is there an association between the overall market
conditions and the proportional
relevance of accounting data and
?t.This study finds that the proportional
relevance of “other”
information increased substantially over the period 1984–2010.
Moreover, the results suggest that investors rely more heavily on
accounting data (“other” information) during bearish (bullish)
years with high (low) levels of volatility in capital markets.
Overall, the results reported in this study indicate that although
“other” forward-looking information has gained in importance over
time, investors still rely on accounting data as an anchor for
valuation in difficult years. The second essay examines the
influence of SFAS 131—a mandated change in segment disclosure—on
the relation between corporate diversification and analyst
behavior, as measured by analyst following and the precision of
analysts’ information. Based on a sample of diversified and
non-diversified firms, I compare the relation between corporate
diversification and several aspects of analyst behavior across the
old SFAS 14 and the new SFAS 131 segment reporting regime. Using
the model developed by Barron, Kim, Lim, and Stevens (1998), I find
that the previously positive (negative) relation between corporate
diversification and analysts’ idiosyncratic information precision
(consensus) is significantly negative (positive) under SFAS 131.
Additionally, I find that the negative relation between corporate
diversification and analyst following is even more pronounced (i.e.
more negative) under SFAS 131. This study seeks to add to our
understanding of the broader implications of SFAS 131 by comparing
the relation between corporate diversification and several aspects
of analyst behavior across the old and the new segment reporting
regime for a broad sample of firms.

Regarding the topic of goodwill, the issue under consideration and the need of relevant accounting data to stakeholders were the stimulators for this study. This study aims to assess the relevance of the goodwill impairment value in the quality of financial statements. Therefore it was made an analysis of companies listed on the Euronext 100 index from 2006 to 2013. To this end, it was considered the regressions analysis that determines and examine the dependent variable by the use of the explanatory variables such as book-value, impairment value and the net profit. From the regression analysis we can conclude that the first hypothesis is valid, meaning that the value of impairment of goodwill recognized in financial statements is relevant when evaluating a company by stakeholders. In contrast, the time factor impact on the relevance of the value of goodwill impairments charges, is not conclusive as the regression analysis demonstrate.

Internet, searching has become the most important way to locate
information efficiently. Current searching techniques are able to
retrieve relevant data, however, personalization techniques are
still needed to better identify different user requirements. This
thesis proposes an interactive and iterative approach to infer a
user's intentions implicitly, and adapt to changing user
requirements. We gather relevance feedback from the user, and
classify items in the query result set into different groups based
on the feedback for each item. We rerank the original result set
according to the user's interest towards each group. The group of
the user's interest is ranked higher. We illustrate the approach
using a personalized academic paper searching application and
evaluate it with real users. The experimental results show
improvements after applying our approach. The system design is

▼ This study examines the relationship between accounting choice for intangible assets and their value relevance as well as the moderating effect of firm life cycle on this relationship, in the pre- and post-Australian Equivalents to International Financial Reporting Standards (AIFRS) periods. In the pre-AIFRS period, Australian firms enjoyed wide discretion in accounting for intangible assets. However, with the adoption of AIFRS in 2005, managerial discretion in accounting for the assets has become more restrictive. This allows the impacts of alternative accounting practices in these two periods to be investigated.
The sample used in this study consists of 900 and 1,225 firm-years for the pre and post AIFRS period, respectively. Sample firms are classified into three life cycle stages; Growth, Mature and Decline, based on Anthony and Ramesh’s (1992) classification method. Four regression models based on the Ohlson (1995) valuation model are used in the tests of value relevance.
The findings indicate that during the pre-AIFRS period, capitalised identifiable intangible assets are regarded by the Australian market as value relevant. The results also suggest that although there is a significant difference in value relevance between Decline and Mature firms, the same effect is not present between Growth and Mature firms. Further, the results indicate that identifiable intangible assets for Growth and Mature firms are value relevant but not for Decline firms. Although the findings provide support to previous studies on the use of accounting choice as a signalling mechanism, there is also evidence to suggest that it is not employed homogeneously across firms.
A comparison between the pre- and post-AIFRS period suggests that the market attaches higher value relevance to identifiable intangible assets after the adoption of AIFRS. The findings also suggest that AIFRS implementation has led to an increase in the value relevance in all three firm life cycle stages and that there is no significant difference between these stages. Nonetheless, the impact of AIFRS implementation is more substantial for Decline firms with evidence of value relevance found only in the post-AIFRS period.
This suggests that the concerns over a more restrictive accounting treatment for intangible assets following the adoption of AIFRS could lead to firms providing less value-relevant information might be overstated and unwarranted. The findings presented in this study should be useful to both researchers and accounting standard setters in the ongoing debate on allowing managerial discretion with regards to accounting for intangible assets, particularly following the adoption of AIFRS.

▼ The ‘frame problem’ according to Jerry Fodor concerns the question of how a cognitive system like ours can frugally and reliably determine what is relevant for its processing tasks. A number of authors have pointed to heuristics as a solution to this question. A heuristic solution, however, leaves unanswered important epistemological problems concerning the rationality and truthfulness of human cognition. In this dissertation I will try to address these ‘epistemological
relevance problems’ on the basis of a heuristic account of reasoning. Thereby, I will argue that we need to look beyond internal computational processes to our technological and social wherewithal to understand the characteristic success humans have enjoyed in their epistemic endeavours. More concretely, it will be my claim that collaborative reasoning allows us to enter a cumulative selection process in the direction of optimal solutions.

▼ A user often interacts with multiple applications while working on a task. User models can be developed individually at each of the individual applications, but there is no easy way to come up with a more complete user model based on the distributed activity of the user. To address this issue, this research studies the importance of combining various implicit and explicit
relevance feedback indicators in a multi-application environment. It allows different applications used for different purposes by the user to contribute user activity and its context to mutually support users with unified
relevance feedback. Using the data collected by the web browser, Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Writer and VKB, combinations of implicit
relevance feedback with semi-explicit
relevance feedback were analyzed and compared with explicit user ratings.
Our past research show that multi-application interest models based on implicit feedback theoretically out performed single application interest models based on implicit feedback. Also in practice, a multi-application interest model based on semi-explicit feedback increased user attention to high-value documents. In the current dissertation study, we have incorporated topic modeling to represent interest in user models for textual content and compared similarity measures for improved recall and precision based on the text content. We also learned the relative value of features from content consumption applications and content production applications. Our experimental results show that incorporating implicit feedback in page-level user interest estimation resulted in significant improvements over the baseline models. Furthermore, incorporating semi-explicit content (e.g. annotated text) with the authored text is effective in identifying segment-level relevant content.
We have evaluated the effectiveness of the recommendation support from both semi-explicit model (authored/annotated text) and unified model (implicit + semi-explicit) and have found that they are successful in allowing users to locate the content easily because the relevant details are selectively highlighted and recommended documents and passages within documents based on the user’s indicated interest. Our recommendations based on the semi-explicit feedback were viewed the same as those from unified feedback and recommendations based on semi-explicit feedback outperformed those from unified feedback in terms of matching post-task document assessments.

▼ I examine whether religiosity is positively associated with the valuation multiples investors assign to fair valued items that are prone to managerial bias. Using a sample of U.S. banking firms, I find that the value relevance of net assets that are hard to verify is higher for firms located in more religious areas than for those located in less religious areas. Moreover, I hypothesize and find that audit quality and firm information environment quality moderate the positive association between religiosity and value relevance. I perform several robustness checks. First, I rule out several alternative explanations to my results. Second, I address the concern that my results suffer from an omitted correlated variable problem. Third, I show that my results hold for firms located in Urban as well as Rural areas.

▼ M.Ed.
High school mathematics learners often take mathematics education for granted. They study mathematics simply because it is included in the school curriculum, and thus required for them to pass so that they can obtain a school leaving qualification. They never really succeed in seeing and understanding the relevance of mathematics to their present and future lives. As a result, they fail to relate and apply classroom mathematics to the external environment. They fail to make mathematical connections that would enable them to be confident users of mathematics as an effective tool for solving problems, a means of communication and a way of supporting reasoning. This suggests that there may be some serious constraints associated with the teachers' instructional approaches, which hinder the learners' meaningful learning and understanding of the relevance of mathematics. Thus, there arises the need to examine the relationship between the teachers' instructional approaches and the learners' understanding of the relevance of mathematics. Such an examination may help to expose the strengths and limitations of the instructional approaches, so that the necessary adjustments can be made in the teaching practice to improve the learning of mathematics.

▼ This study addresses the issue of ‘washback’ effect of language testing. What is ‘washback’? What does it look like in practice? It has been widely asserted that tests influence language learners who prepare to take them (the tests), and teachers who try to help the students to prepare, thereby influence learning and teaching in schools. ‘Washback’ effect refers to these influences of the testing especially in language education (Alderson and Wall, 1993; Hughes, 1988). Although professionals have written about the concept, and definitions from the professionals’ perspective exist, as yet little is known about how ‘washback’ actually functions, whether it really exists and (if it at all exists) what its nature looks like in the day-to-day school operation. How do the Grade 10 students and their English language teachers react to (the nature and/or the effects of) the EGSEC English Language Examination? Has the exam any ‘washback’ effect on their perceptions of what the students do when they go about it? How well does the exam reflect the syllabi objectives, their content and method? By finding out answers to these and related questions, the researcher in this study attempts to examine the ‘washback’ effects of the existing Grade 10 EGSEC English Language Examination in six representative schools in Addis Ababa. An attempt is also made to determine the nature of the washback effect of the examination. In the study, the researcher employed various methodologies such as questionnaires and checklists. Two questionnaires were used to collect views concerning the examination from 248 candidates and 13 English language teachers. From the 248 participant students, 131 were males and 112 were females. Of the total, 131 are from government-maintained schools, 50 from public and 62 from private schools. Among the 13 teachers, 4 were females. From the total 8 were from government-maintained schools and 3 from public, the rest from private schools. And two checklists were employed to aid a detail analysis of two academic years (2004/05 and 2005/06) examinations. A total of 18 raters who represents the viewpoint of the program constituency, participated in selecting representative sample objectives for the analyses. Other five teachers also participated in making precise decision about the closeness of the items content and format to the syllabi objectives that the exam items attempt to measure. The findings of both investigations revealed that the examination has washback effect on the students’ as well as their English language teachers’ perception of the students’ learning and/or language use. And when seen from the point of view of coverage,
relevance, and appropriateness, the examinations are found to have negative ‘washback’ effect on the learning /teaching process. Based on the findings, relevant conclusions were drawn and implications for future test design were discussed.

▼ Advertising expenditure is one of the most important budget items supporting marketing activities for most companies, and may be treated as an intangible asset. Through the impact on demand and costs, advertising activities affect the firm’s pricing and output decisions as well as the firm’s market value (Tannous, 1997; Chauvin & Hirschey, 1994). Despite the significant economic importance of advertising expenditure, not much attention has been given to the value relevance of advertising expenditure and the impact of advertising expenditure disclosure on firms’ market value. Most of the empirical studies for value relevance of advertising expenditure have been conducted using data from the US and UK Academic research on the value relevance of advertising expenditure in Canada is nonexistent. The accounting standard applied in Canada is different from that used in prior US and UK studies. . Canada adopts Canadian GAAP before 2011, and switches to IFRS from 2011onwards. Both regimes do not require firms in Canada to disclose advertising expenditure. However, most US studies use data before 1994 to analyze value relevance of advertising expenditure. Before 1994, disclosing advertising expenditure is mandatory for US firms under US GAAP. The UK evidence uses data before 2005, during which period UK firms still adopt UK GAAP. Although UK. GAAP does not require companies to disclose advertising expenditure, unlike IFRS, different accounting standards can lead to different financial data reporting and different results. In addition, studies on the impact of voluntary disclosure of advertising expenditure on market value are nonexistent. Furthermore, Canada has a more stable financial system than that of the US and UK In this context, the objective of this thesis is to initiate research on the important dimension of advertising expenditure among Canadian firms. The findings of this thesis will enhance understanding of the relationship between advertising expenditure and market value, and companies’ decisions to voluntarily disclose advertising expenditure on their market value.

A cet effet,

▼ Renneboog et al (2008) argue that it remains to be seen whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be priced. In light of this, this thesis tests the performance and market valuation of CSR indicators by using a comprehensive set of KLD indicators. Chapter Three of this thesis examines the effect of CSR on financial performance by incorporating CSR into the investment process. As no clear break point is found for the normalised KLD score, the net KLD score is used as an alternative portfolio metric. In addition, most KLD indicators are found to have insignificant alphas for the high-scoring, low-scoring, and long-short portfolios—meaning that investors do not earn abnormal returns through a long-short strategy. Moreover, insignificant alphas are recorded for most of the indicators under the best-in-class approach—meaning that the application of industry classification does not affect results. Finally, both the conditional Ferson and Schadt (1996) model and conditional three-factor model are used as robustness checks, with most indicators having insignificant alphas for these conditional models. As such, the results imply that there is neither outperformance nor underperformance when using portfolios formed with CSR scores; however, there are significant differences in factor loadings between high-scoring and low-scoring CSR portfolios. Chapter Four uses a framework consistent with the Peasnell (1982) and Ohlson (1995) model to examine whether CSR is reflected in share prices. The CSR indicator is treated as the “other information” variable, and the association between CSR and market price is estimated by controlling for book value of equity, net income and dividends. Although the market is found to value different KLD indicators differently, most of the indicators are found to have positive impact on market value (except for corporate governance and human rights). R&D and advertising expenditure are both added to the valuation model for robustness checking purposes. Some of the CSR indicators—and especially for the case of environment—are not valued during the earlier stages, but become increasingly valued over time. The ten industries are also found to have varying effects on market valuation. In summary, high-scoring CSR firms display higher valuations than low-scoring CSR firms, and thus it can be concluded that a socially responsible agenda does not conflict with maximising shareholder value. Since most of the CSR indicators in Chapter Four lead to positive market price valuations, Chapter Five aims to disaggregate the value effect into the separate components of ROE ratio, the implied cost of capital (ICC) and growth rate. Three different methodologies are used to test the relationship between CSR, ICC and the long-run growth rate. The relationship between CSR and growth rate is positive with all of the methodologies. However, the different methodologies return differing results for the relationship between CSR and ICC, which may be due to the different assumptions made by each approach. Furthermore, it…

▼ Abstract Problem background and problem discussion: The increased demands on companies and their ability to operate sustainably has made corporate social responsibility (CSR) a very hot topic in modern society. The academic debate has yet to put a definite answer on whether the engagement in CSR activities has a positive effect on a company financially. Previous research on stock listed in Sweden indicate that there is a positive relationship between environmental performance and that there is an asymmetry in how it is valued across company sizes. However, there has not yet been any research made into what impact size has on the value relevance of social CSR ratings. This will be tested by drawing from resource-based theory and legitimacy theory. Research question: How is the value relevance of social ratings affected by accounting for company size? Purpose: The purpose is to examine what effect the inclusion of corporation size has on the value relevance of social CSR ratings. Theory: The study primarily utilizes Stakeholder theory, the resource-based theory and legitimacy theory. Method: This is a quantitative study in a panel data setting with a deductive research approach. The practical method is a regression analysis that assesses the value relevance of CSR measures at the OMX Stockholm for the years of 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. The study encompasses 349 Small-, medium- and large-sized companies and has a total of 1429 observations, which have been subject to statistical significance tests. Results and analysis: The results show that social, environmental and overall CSR ratings are value relevant and associated with lower market values. There also seems to be little impact on results by including company size as a variable. Furthermore the results of this study differ from previous research, implying that results are very sensitive to changes in the regression model. Conclusion: The results of the study lead us to believe that size has little impact on how value relevant social ratings are. This implies that regardless theory such as the resource-based and legitimacy theory these cannot be supported in practice among Swedish firms listed at OMX Stockholm. Furthermore, our method gives different results with regard to previous research done on the Swedish market and indicates that there is a negative relationship between CSR ratings and market value.

▼ In all countries, regardless of culture and level of development, science and technology(S&T) are seen as key areas for further material development and welfare. A certain proportion of the population needs to develop S&T-related skills and competences at a high level. But also for the majority, who will not enter such careers, S&T are key subjects to master the challenges in everyday life and for full participation in democracy. In our efforts to make S&T attractive as careers and as a key
subject for mastering challenges in everyday life, we need to know more about the interests, concerns and values of the learners. The study of Zimbabwean learners sought to find what students like to learn in science, their interest in science lessons, use of science principles in everyday life and what attitudes they
have about the environment. Learners’ attitudes to S&T were also measured by an open ended question that sought their ideas on what they would like to research on if they were scientists. The empirical basis for this thesis is data collected with the ROSE instrument, developed by a team of international scholars in S&T education. Data used in this thesis is from twenty one secondary schools in Zimbabwe (N=734) targeting sixteen year old learners.Comparisons are made with twenty eight other countries.Factor analysis and descriptive statistics has been used to make comparisons of Zimbabwean and international trends. The Zimbabwean sample generally showed a mismatch between their expectations and realities of the science education curriculum. Results suggested that Science education was
largely irrelevant to their needs and interests. Many out-of-class experiences were not explored in science classes. However, the sensitivity of learners to significant issues around their lives, such as AIDS and other diseases showed in their wish to research to cure those infected. The newly found voice of the learners will provide new insights on how to improve science education in Zimbabwe in such a way that it is able to meet the hopes, aspirations and the perceived interests, needs and priorities of the learners. Rapid developments in mundane applications of science and technology require that the curriculum negotiates a level that empowers learners to cope with a technologically driven world. For the development of capabilities to understand and use science and technology, either in daily life or study at higher levels the science education debate must periodically consider
needs, views and concerns of the learners themselves among other stakeholders.

▼ Daily-deal applications are popular implementations of online advertising strategies
that offer products and services to users based on their personal profiles. Current
implementations are effective but can frustrate users with irrelevant deals due to stale
profiles. To fully exploit the value creation and revenue generation potential of these
applications, deals must become smarter. This research presents SmarterDeals, a deal
recommendation system that exploits users changing personal context information to
deliver highly relevant offers. To improve the
relevance of offers, SmarterDeals relies
on collaborative filtering recommendation algorithms and SmarterContext, our adaptive
context management framework. SmarterContext provides SmarterDeals with
up-to-date information about users locations as well as product and service preferences
gathered from their past and present web interactions and experiences. We
validated our approach using a data set of 271,418 product and service category ratings
and 65,411 real users. We present our results using a comparative analysis that
involves other well known recommendation approaches.

▼ The purpose of this descriptive, exploratory action research study, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, was to identify students at risk of failure on a post-graduate licensure exam and to develop and implement improvement models to improve exam performance. The participants were alumni of the funeral service technology program at Northwest Mississippi Community College. African American graduates of this vocational course failed at increasingly disparate rates above Caucasian graduates in the national board licensing examination, despite commensurate post-secondary scholastic achievement. The quantitative research portion of the study statistically analyzed student performance measures in funeral service classes to reveal areas of dissimilar performance divided by race. The focus of the qualitative research portion of the study included interviewing program graduates to reveal perceptions of former students, surveying course documents, and examining learning spaces, utilizing a contextual framework of critical race theory and culturally relevant pedagogy (Bell, 2002; Ladson-Billings, 1996). To improve learning outcomes, as information was gathered, practical techniques were garnered to improve learning outcomes and enhance favorable student results on the final standardized test.
