Elastomers are macromolecules which, under the effect of vulcanization, present remarkable properties of hyper-elasticity, making their use essential in many industrial sectors and consumer goods. However, in order to obtain sufficient mechanical properties for such applications, fillers, such as carbon black and silica, need to be incorporated in rubber formulations. Even if they are commonly used in the industry, these fillers present some major limitations, especially their high density (> 1,8), leading to heavy materials when incorporated at high rate. The aim of these works is to study a new type of reinforcement, based on polyurethanes synthesized in situ during elastomers processing, in order to decrease their weight. Elastomer/polyurethane blends thus formed were characterized to determine their rheological, mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical properties in addition of their densities. This work has proven our concept as PUs reinforced materials present lower densities compared to a conventional reinforcement while having correct mechanical properties.

▼ This thesis proposes a conceptual and operational framework to examine how minority group members subjectively construe their ingroup. Four community studies were devised to test this framework, and to examine individual versus contextual differences in ingroup construals. Chapter 1 provides a critical analysis of existing models of multiple social identities. Subsequently, a new conceptual framework is proposed to assess how minority group members construe their ingroup in the context of multiple, cross-cutting group memberships. The subjective combination of multiple ingroups is described in terms of Social Identity Structure (SIS) and Inclusiveness (SII). Chapter 2 introduces a method, the Triple-Crossed Categorisation Task, to measure both constructs. The validity of SII and SIS is assessed in a sample of Turkish Australian Muslim adults (Chapter 3), and adolescents (Chapter 4). Both studies showed SII to be a valid construct, distinct from measures of identification, and positively related to outgroup contact. Moreover, eight different SIS’s were replicated across both studies, further attesting to the validity of the conceptual model. Importantly, across both studies, SII uniquely predicted attitudes toward a range of outgroups. The following chapters examine whether and how Turkish Australian Muslims alter their ingroup construals after exposure to a religious identity threat versus reassurance (Chapter 5), or to a religious versus ethnic identity threat (Chapter 6). In both experiments, SII was not affected by threat. The distribution of SIS’s did show some effects of threat, but the pattern was not consistent across studies. Finally, Chapter 7 discusses these findings in light of the individual and contextual factors surrounding minority members’ ingroup construals. The contributions to the study of multiple social identities, practical implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed as well.

▼ This thesis consists of three studies that investigate how important political
relations are in finance. In the first study, I find that poor bilateral political
relations between the US and other countries negatively influence US media dissemination toward non-US firms with American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). I also show that US media negativity has downward pressure on ADR firms’ home market prices and such negative impact is reduced during the year when political
relations are poor—an indication that investors react to real media bias. I conclude the first study by showing that negative US media coverage leads to a higher likelihood of ADR firms terminating their ADRs. The second study finds strong empirical evidence showing that when bilateral political
relations between a country and the US are poor, the level of US institutional ownership and the number of institutional investors are low for American Depositary Receipt (ADR) firms from that country. In addition, the second study discusses whether a country’s popularity among Americans and an international crisis influence the level of US institutional ownership. Furthermore, following the previous literature, I show empirically that a high level of US institutional ownership promotes better corporate governance; to do so, I look at firm value, class action lawsuits and voluntary disclosure news. The third study considers whether bilateral political
relations affect the board
structure of S&P 1500 companies—specifically the proportion of foreign independent directors (FIDs). I find strong empirical evidence that when bilateral political
relations between a country and the US are poor, the proportion of FIDs from that country hired by US firms is small. The threat of a firm losing technology and insider information to countries with poor political
relations are considered costs by US firms, so when firms do hire FIDs from countries that have poor political
relations with the US, I empirically show that the benefits are greater than the costs. I conclude the third study with an M&A analysis, which finds that firms have a high proportion of FIDs from countries where their acquisition targets exist and bilateral political
relations do not influence such a proportion.

▼ In this thesis, the longitudinal flexural wave propagation behaviour through symmetric and non-symmetric tetrahedral and pyramidal lattice structures is analyzed. Finite element analysis employing Floquet-Bloch theory is used to generate and plot dispersion curves. The design variables of the lattice structures are modified to analyze their impact on the dispersion curves. In symmetric lattice structures, changes in stiffness and density provide the effect of scaling the dispersion curves, whereas in non-symmetric lattice structures, based on the location of the inhomogeneities applied, asymmetric dispersion relations are obtained. For systems in which only certain directions of wave propagation are considered, non-symmetric lattice structures and the resulting asymmetric dispersion relations demonstrate great strength in terms of their flexibility when tailoring dispersion curves, as a large number of directionally different dispersion curves can be obtained, providing more options to design and optimize the lattice structure. Critically, band gaps can be designed at desirable frequencies and directions.

▼ This dissertation addresses how participation in collective action waxes and wanes over time. In past research, this pursuit has typically been developed using concepts of contention cycles and protest waves. I further this research agenda by arguing that waves, and participation in general, grow and decline according to influences from previous collective action events. The theories I develop draw upon relationships between events. These relationships include the timing between events, the similarity of actors, and role of oppositional mobilization. To ascertain participation growth and wave formation, I analyze strikes and lockouts in the United States from 1881 to 1894. This time period marked the nascence of the organized American labor movement, enabling insight into a young movement's expansion. The data I use comes from the U.S. Commissioner of Labor and represents firm-level details on the population of strikes and lockouts during the period. I supplement this data with accounts on select strikes, lockouts, and historical circumstances of the time. In the three substantive chapters I perform a comparative case study, an exploratory analysis of wave growth, and daily time series regressions to understand how previous events influence future conflicts. Focusing on daily changes, I found incredible fluctuation in growth from one day to the next. Typically, gains in new participants one day were followed by relatively fewer new participants the following day. As a consequence, wave duration tended to be rather brief. Likewise, influence between events tapered quickly, lasting just one day to one week after the initiations of previous events. While I found considerable evidence in support of influence from event initiation, the event outcome effect had limited support in predicting conflict escalation. Event participants did somewhat respond positively to those similar to themselves, exhibiting mild homophily, but this effect did not drive general conflict growth. For this effect to mobilize actors, the causes behind the conflicts must have general appeal and the organizing strategy must be inclusive. Lastly, though strikes and lockouts, the oppositional interests in this study, exhibited many similar characteristics, I conclude that the phenomena are incomparable due to the rarity of lockouts.

Polymer blends are used in tyre industries because of their low cost and better properties. When the blend components are not miscible, chemical methods (using compatibilizing agents) or mechanical methods (increasing the mixture time of elastomers) of compatibilization are necessary to improve the compatibility of the components of the blend. In this work, Trans-Polyoctenylene Rubber (TOR) was used as a compatibilizing agent of the NR/SBR rubber blend. The Mooney viscosity, stress and elongation at break of different blends were evaluated, using a Factorial Design. The experimental results obtained showed that the Mooney viscosity is greatly affected by the addition of TOR whereas the dynamometric properties, the stress and elongation at break are more sensitive to the changes of processing time of polymers. Based on statistical results, regression equations to evaluate the properties studied as a function of TOR concentration and processing time were obtained and verified using blends which were not on the original design. The results were very satisfactory, either on the effects determination or on the regression equation determination. It was concluded that the Mooney viscosity is more sensitive to the alterations of TOR concentration than the changes in the processing time of the elastomers and the dynamometric properties are more affected by the processing time.

▼ This project is a fundamentally interdisciplinary approach toward obtaining a better understanding of psychological actorhood of the institution of the state, also known as ‘state
personhood’ through the incorporation of neurological insights in the conceptualization of agents and structures. First, the ongoing debate on state personhood and its inconclusive aspects are outlined. Second, human actorhood is reconceptualized using insights
rendered by neuropsychology. The constituent agent of social theory, the human individual, is shown to behave both like a
structure and an agent. Third, implications for the
structure-agency debate are analyzed and situated in the context of the dispute on state personhood, wherein the human individual
and the state are treated as the primary agent/structures under scrutiny. The strict dichotomization of
agents and structures is rejected in favor of a Hegelian dialectic approach in which at a given point in time an entity may display both the properties of an agent and of a
structure. Fourth, the ethical and normative dimensions of the reconceptualization of state personhood are briefly commented on. In
conclusion, it is argued that the conflation of ‘state’ and ‘personhood’ can be justified through an approach in which both are endowed with similar properties of agency and
structure. Reconceptualization of the state as a psychological actor renders new approaches to the analysis of international
relations and foreign policy.

The increasing and alarming spread of antibiotic
resistance by pathogenic bacteria have become an important public
health problem. To overcome this worrying situation, there is a
growing need for new antimicrobial agents with innovative modes of
action. The vast majority of bacterial species use peptides to
defend and protect themselves against other microorganisms in their
environment. These antimicrobial peptides possess a wide range of
activity spectra and modes of action and are a very good source to
discover and develop effective antimicrobial agents. The objective
of this project was to design and synthesize analogues of the
antimicrobial peptide microcin J25 to perform structure-activity
studies for a better understanding of its modes of action. As the
microcin J25 has a particular lasso structure that is extremely
difficult to replicate synthetically, the strategy was to design by
computational approach analogues capable of mimicking the microcin
J25’s structure without the lasso topology. After synthesis, these
analogs were used in a structure-activity study to better
understand the impact of the structure on the mode of action and
identify parts of the microcin J25 that are involved in the
transport and interactions with bacterial targets.

▼ The payment of bridewealth is a near-universal cultural practice among the Igbos of SouthEast Nigeria. Bridewealth used to be a symbolic legitimator of marriage. However, its symbolism has been distorted by expensive items on marriage lists. In this context, bridewealth payment provides an excellent analytical tool for the
structure-agency debate, which has, in varying degrees, engaged academic interest for centuries. Underlying this debate is the extent to which institutions determine human behaviour and its attendant power
relations. While
structure refers to the self-replicating, complex elements that sustain institutions, agency refers to the volitional, purpose-driven nature of human activities. In this debate, the structuralfunctionalist-Marxist view, symbolic interactionism, and complementarity view are prominent. From these views, this dissertation develops a needs-based approach to
structure-agency interaction, arguing that a focus on the primacy of
structure or agency obscures their underlying motivations. It posits that the
structure-agency interaction is both the process and product of logical assessments and dialogue, which are driven by socio-economic needs. In the context of this framework, it explored one central question: In what ways do power
relations play out in the negotiation process of bridewealth payment in South-East Nigeria? Using literature review, non-participant observation of bridewealth negotiations, and in-depth interviews of 47 key informants, it reveals an interdependent, complex web linking the custodians of culture with agentic tools such as wealth, religion, and education. Despite cultural inhibitions in spousal selection and bridewealth negotiation, prospective spouses have a range of creative tools for reducing exorbitant items on marriage lists, thereby deconstructing high bridewealth. These agentic tools are driven by socio-economic elements such as desire to marry, economic coercion, cohabitation, threat of extramarital pregnancy, and religious values. The study concludes that bridewealth negotiation reflects socio-economic dynamics within hybrid cultural spaces in which potential couples and their parents may navigate the powerful constraints of tradition or sustain tradition through their inaction. These socio-economic dynamics are so powerful that they produce widespread disregard for legislation limiting bridewealth amounts. The study’s findings demonstrate the ineffectiveness of a top-down approach to law, the value of policy sensitivity to people’s lived realities, and the importance of in-depth consultation in the formulation of legislation.

▼ Abstract ______________________________________________________________________ Title: A study about creating understanding for different kinds of empowerment Level: Bachelors thesis in Business Administration, 15 credits Author: Fredrik Legovic Supervisor: Tomas Källquist Date: 2014 - June Aim: The main purpose of this study is to increase the understanding for different kinds of empowerment and how it affects the staff in the public sector. Method: The choice of method was based on the research aim. The method used to meet the objective was qualitative. The qualitative study was conducted with a hermeneutic basis, where individuals were asked to describe their experience of empowerment and how they feel affected of it. This thesis has a deductive approach, where existing theories dealing empowerment formed the basis for the design of interview substrate, which is then paired with the empirical evidence, based on this the conclusions was drawn. Result & Conclusion: What separates the different kinds of empowerment and how it affect the staff depends most of all on how the management chooses to communicate and share information with their staff. Suggestions for future research: A study regarding managers that works with different kinds of empowerment, and how that affects them, could be regarded as an interesting future research. Contribution of thesis: It shows that different kinds of empowerment affect the staff in different ways, which I made clear to the readers. ▼ Most scholars have viewed property in pre-modern Ethiopia in ???feudal??? terms analogous to medieval Europe. According to them, Ethiopia???s past property arrangement had been in every respect archaic implying less than complete property rights, for, unlike in modern liberal societies, it vested no ownership or ???absolute??? rights in a single individual over a material object. By draining any notions of ownership right, historians therefore characterized the forms of property through which the Ethiopian elites supported themselves as ???fief-holding??? or rights of lordship, which merely entitled them to collect tribute from the
subject peasantry. By using land registers, surveys, charters, and private property transactions, which I collected from Ethiopian churches and monasteries, this dissertation challenges this conception of property in premodern Ethiopia by arguing that Ethiopian elites did exercise ownership rights over the land, thus providing them a means by which to control the peasantry. Through the concepts of rim (a form of private property in land exclusively held by social elites) and z??ga (a hitherto unrecognized serf-like laborers), I explore the economic and social relationship between rulers and ruled that defined political culture in premodern Ethiopia. As a norm rim derived from confiscated peasant property and it mediated or exposed the social dependence of the z??ga class on the ruling class. Rim together with z??ga emphasize that the peasants were far less independent and secure in their property rights than conventional portrayals, while indicating the ability of rulers to create a sharply defined social distance for the maintenance of a land tenure system that supported harsh exploitation and domination.

▼ This dissertation studies the impact of business
relations on firms' financing decisions. The goal is to understand the determinants of business
relations and how they interact with firms' capital
structure. In the first chapter, I present a model which studies the role of customer risk in suppliers' financing choice. The base model predicts that when faced with a high-risk customer, suppliers with significant continuation values prefer equity over debt. The extended model allows for analyzing the supplier's decision to concentrate on a single major customer or diversify into multiple customers. The model shows that by decreasing the risk of premature liquidation, diversification allows for the supplier to take advantage of the bargaining benefits of debt.
The second chapter empirically investigates the impact of customer risk on suppliers' capital
structure. Consistent with the model presented in the first chapter, both cross-sectional and time-series regression results show that customer risk has a negative impact on suppliers' debt financing. Customer risk is an important determinant of suppliers' method of financing as well. During the first two years of the relationship, suppliers with high-risk customers are more likely to raise equity. Comparing the impact of customer risk on different supplier groups shows that firms that operate in concentrated industries and younger firms are more sensitive to changes in customer risk. In further analyses I find that the risk is transferred from customers to suppliers: There is a lead-lag relationship between customer and supplier credit rating changes. Also, suppliers experience an increase in volatility of their stock returns after they start a new relationship with a risky customer. Results from further analyses are suggestive of customer risk affecting capital
structure through its impact on supplier risk.

This work aims to characterize the structure of human urotensinergic peptides by CD, NMR and molecular modelling. hUII (11 aa) and its analogue URP (8 aa) are considered as the most potent vasoactive peptides known so far and are involved in various biological systems, including the cardiovascular system and tumor cell proliferation. These two peptides are endogenous ligands of a GPCR, UT, and exert common but also divergent physiological actions. In order to gain a better understanding of their biological activities, we determined the structures of three agonists (hUII4-11, URP, P5U) and one antagonist (urantide), in DPC micelles, a cellular eukaryotic mimetic membrane. For all peptides, we observed the presence of two major forms of the disulfide bridge, RHStaple and LHHook, which are known to be essential for biological activity. We showed a difference in the turn nature between agonists (type I β turn) and the antagonist (type II’ β turn). Our analyses also revealed that, in agonists and antagonist, the side chain orientations of residues F6, Y9 and more specifically W7 were different. Indeed, the indole group of D-W7 exhibited a 180° rotation. Secondly, we showed that, contrary to URP, the conformation of hUII was dependent on concentration. This selfassembly phenomenon may impact…

Prion is infectious protein responsible of neurodegenerative diseases in human and animal. Scrapie in goat and sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in human are prion-related diseases. Prion diseases are fatal and to date there is no efficient treatment against these troubles. This is why in our lab we focus on identification of new compounds efficient against prions. Flunarizine was identified as new anti-prion compound efficient against yeast prion [PSI+] and [URE3], and against mammalian prion PrPSc in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo. Flunarizine may be good drug candidate against prion diseases due to its anti-prion potential in different model. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) around flunarizine hightlights 31 compounds out of 47 which inhibit prion PrPSc propagation in vitro. Six of most efficient compounds cleared prion PrPSc in organotypic slice culture. There were no relationship between flunarizine and related compound activities against prion PrPSc and their known mode of action. The most potent compounds against PrPSc inhibit PFAR (protein folding activity of ribosome). PFAR is a protein chaperon activity which is involved in yeast prion [PSI+] propagation. Many tested compounds are good candidates for drugs repurposing against prion diseases because of their important…

Natural rubber latex is mainly composed by rubber particles whose core is made of cis-1,4-polyisoprene and the shell of non-isoprene compounds. It stability in the tree is provided by the negative charge of the shell due to the presence of proteins and lipids. Natural rubber latex coagulates after acidification to form a colloidal gel that is the first step of its transformation into natural rubber. In this PhD thesis, we studied this acid-induced aggregation and gelation and the properties of the resulting gels. For this, a commercial natural rubber latex composed by rubber particles (1 µm in diameter), was used. Aggregation was induced by hydrolysis of a compound called glucano-delta-lactone (GDL). The aggregation was followed by different techniques based on light scattering (turbidimetry, DWS, SLS). Gelation was followed in situ by rheology. Then, the rheological properties of colloidal gels formed at pH 4 were characterized in the linear and non-linear regimes.Dependence to the volume fraction and the pH of the onset of aggregation was observed.
The synthetic analogues of the natural 2’-deoxyribonucleosides, linked by phosphodiester groups in nucleic acids, constitute major classes of antiviral and anticancer drugs. Such nucleosides act as “prodrugs” disturbing the biosynthesis of nucleic acids after phosphorylation. Searching for new antiviral drugs, the aim of this work was the synthesis of new modified nucleosides analogues of 2’-deoxyadenosine and -guanosine also analogues of aciclovir and its derivatives (vanciclovir, ganciclovir…) widely used for Herpes treatment. In the first works in adenine and guanine series, the cyclic analogues in which the base and a side chain introduced at position 9 of the base are linked at position 8 by an oxygen atom could not be obtained. Four cyclic analogues in the guanine series were prepared in which the base and the 9-side chain are linked at position 8 are either linked by a heteroatom (synthesized by nucleophilic substitution) or by a carbon-carbon bond (synthesized by free radical reaction). The evaluation of the antiviral activity of these compounds is underway.

This dissertation is made of three distinct chapters. The first chapter examines the causal link between banks’ syndicated loan supply and non-financial firms’ campaign contributions for US elections during the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The results indicate that a 10% decrease in loan supply of a given firm by its pre-crisis relationship lenders during the early crisis period leads to a 9% increase in firm’s campaign contributions in 2008. Further, firms’ level of past campaign contributions is positively associated with favorable loan terms for the future. The findings lend support to the idea that campaign contributions are an investment in political capital rather than merely a form of consumption good. The second chapter identifies the effect of banks’ industry exposures prior to market-entry on the output growth of manufacturing sectors through US bank-entry deregulations. The findings indicate that the larger the discrepancy in specialization in an industry between a state-pair, the higher the impact of banking integration on the growth of that sector in the state that is less-specialized. The last chapter examines whether banking integration across regions has any impact on the market for corporate control between them. The results show that there are more Mergers and Acquisitions and…

In a context of sustainable development, new biobased and aromatic macromolecular architectures were synthesized from two types of renewable resources: tannins, extracted from wood, and glycerides derived from plant or from microalgae to develop innovative materials for building applications. Firstly, the alkoxylation reaction was performed on tannins. Polyether glycol (propylene or butylene) chains were grafted on tannins extracted from different botanical sources species, resulting in various macropolyols with various controlled macromolecular architectures. Based on these macropolyols, polyurethanes were synthesized by varying the reaction parameters to control the final properties of materials to fit specific requirements. PU proofing membranes and rigid urethane-isocyanurate foams for insulation were elaborated. Finally, algal oil and rapeseed oil (as reference) were modified in epoxides and polyols. These new building blocks were incorporated in the structure of urethane-isocyanurates foams to study the impact of the type and the number of reactive functions on the final properties of rigid foams.New renewable bio-based building blocks were developed and integrated in the final macromolecular architectures and materials. The great potential of tannins and glycerides from microalgae for developing high-performance materials, for building applications, especially waterproofing membranes and…

The morphology and water and ethanol sorption properties of thin films made of polyamide 6 were studied in relation to different transformation conditions, namely chill roll temperature (TCR) (50 and 125°C) and stretching ratio (between 6 and 10.8). The influence of nanofillers (montmorillonite (MMT) and zirconium phosphate (ZrP)) was also investigated. It was observed that stretching has no influence on neither the morphology nor the sorption properties in the studied range. In contrast unfilled films prepared at a chill roll temperature of 50°C have a lower amount of g crystalline phase, thinner cristalline lamellae and reduced amorphous phase mobility than films prepared at a chill roll temperature of 125°C. Adding low amounts of MMT at a TCR of 50°C has a remarkable impact on chain mobility, a and g crystalline phase fractions and lamellar orientation whereas the nanoparticules added at a TCR of 125°C only affect the crystalline orientation. Vapor sorption mechanisms were studied for both filled and unfilled films. The sorption isotherm curves were modelled to obtain a deeply understanding of the aggregation phenomena observed at high activity. Modelling of the kinetics was proposed according to Berens and Hopfenberg approach. Coupling the thermodynamics and kinetics of sorption…

Numerous avian species are good candidates to study the emergence of complex forms of sociality, in particular the species showing advanced cognitive skills, and the one living in groups all year long, coping with the costs and benefits of group living. In my thesis, I investigated the proximate mechanisms underlying the diversity and dynamic of social relationships in captive adult rooks, a colonial and monogamous corvid species. I found that rooks have the ability to form non-reproductive social bonds and several pair bonds throughout their life. In addition, I found: that the group social structure was flexible enough to allow temporal variations of relationships, group composition and sex-ratio; and that dominance relationships do not have any long lasting effects on the stabilisation of the structure. Overall, my work demonstrates that rooks social structure extends far beyond a simple aggregation of reproductive pairs, and may be acknowledged as a multi-level social organisation.

▼ This thesis is dedicated to two distinct but convergent issues: the possibility of paraphrase and an account of context sensitivity on the basis of textual cohesion (or coherence). The possibility of explaining contextual specifications of meaning as a side effect of establishing textual cohesion is explored through an investigation into the nature of texts. Taking off from existing theories of text structure, an ideal concept of cohesion is elaborated which accounts for textual connection by the interpreter’s assignment of rhetorical relations (or discourse relations). In addition to connecting the elements of a text together, rhetorical relations have implications for the content of terms and sentences composing a text. The contextual meaning of terms and sentences are thus explained by the fact that the terms and sentences are parts of a text. Enriching the domain of context sensitivity, special emphasis is placed on the implications of rhetorical relations for predicate terms. Through an analysis of authentic literary examples, a certain conception of predicate reference is vindicated which is labelled rhetorical adjustment. The approach contrasts with several contextualist theories in linguistics and philosophy of language which prefer to account for the generation of meaning transcending the linguistic meaning of terms and sentences as specified by syntax and lexicon by means of external parameters such as the speaker’s intentions and communicative aims. In this way the thesis is a contribution to the debate concerning the interface between semantics and pragmatics. Such a contextualism based on the notion of cohesion has implications for a certain conception of paraphrase. It is often emphasized that it is not possible to say the same thing in different words. It is argued that taking contextualism and cohesion into account justifies a conception of paraphrase according to which it is not opposed to, but contributes to the constitution of the original meaning. Such a paraphrase is undemanding in that it does not aim to capture all the aspects of the original wording, yet it is neither trivial, since it is unpredictable from a lexical point of view nor irrelevant, since it is a constitutive feature of the original expression in so far as it is part of a text.

▼ The optoelectronic properties of nanoscale metal and semiconductor material systems are notably sensitive to their corresponding physical structure. Contemporary synthesis techniques enable careful control of nanoparticle con figurations and therefore provide a wide array of systems where the eff ects of physical morphology on the interaction between nanoscale materials and light can be carefully probed. The investigated properties are immediately relevant to light-harvesting and ultra-sensitive trace-analysis and sensing applications. In this work, the structure-property relationships of both individual semiconductor nanocrystal heterostructures and aggregates of plasmonic silver nanoparticles in rough metal fi lms are probed. The semiconductor heterostructures behave as model light-harvesting systems where optical energy absorbed by one portion of the structure is funneled, on the nanoscale, to a model light-harvesting center, in analogy to photosynthesis. In the plasmonic silver nanostructures, collective optical excitation of the conduction electrons - plasmons - con es electromagnetic radiation to well beyond the traditional diraction limit of light in nanoscale regions called ”hot spots.” Within these hot spots, light-matter interactions are greatly enhanced and thus enable trace-sensing applications such as Raman scattering from a single molecule. Thorough application of relatively simple single particle spectroscopy techniques is combined with high resolution electron microscopy to elucidate the subtle details on how physical structure controls the optical properties of both material systems. There are four main results of this work. (1) The linear and nonlinear optical response of rough silver fi lms is shown to be enhanced by the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons. (2) The enhanced nonlinear response of rough metal films is conjectured to originate from metal clusters, and the observation of stark fluctuations in their efficiency of second-harmonic generation is reported for the fi rst time. (3) The presence of and enhanced emission from silver clusters of only a few atoms plays an important role in the intrinsic optical response of the silver films with considerable implications for surface-enhanced Raman scattering. (4) The e ffects of physical anisotropy on the electronic states of semiconductor nanocrystals are explicitly identifi ed through correlated optical and electron microscopy of single particles. These eff ects are shown to have important rami cations in the internal energy-transfer process of single nanocrystals.

▼ This paper begins by empirically analyzing the impact of civil society on the rule of law and, as theoretically expected, finds it to be positive and significant. This paper also suggests that countries with civil societies that are more active and successful in influencing, or advocating for, human rights policy also tend to have higher levels of the rule of law.

▼ Gregory (2003) demonstrated that for the past thirty-five years small steps of progress have been made towards women's equality. However, he stated that sex discrimination is still blatant, subtle and covert and it continues to plague working women. He continued to argue that nearly all the population of women in the U.S. encounter obstacles in job advancement, whether the obstacles are glass or cement ceilings or ordinary brick walls. (p.5). The researcher will attempt to elaborate on disparate treatment women have endured for generations. With the current pay scale between women and men, women receive 23 cents less than their male colleagues out of every dollar earned. Because this system exist, it impedes a woman's holistic growth and functionality. For example, there are some women who are trapped in abusive relationships but cannot leave because they lack adequate financial resources. Gregory (2003) pointed out that employer retaliation comes in various forms, although employers tend to favor discharge over other options. (p.162). He also stated that other forms of retaliation employers use to punish their employees for having engaged in protected activities include denials of promotion and demotions (p.163). The fear of retaliation prevents a woman from reporting the perpetrator. In addition, some of the political realm is working night and day against the improvement and progress of the women's population. With the above argument made about the disparate treatments towards women, the researcher will apply the qualitative method in this thesis to breakdown problems women face. Plus, the researcher makes suggestions how the nation can be involved in resolving and eliminating these issues, individually and collectively, to moving women's rights and progress forward and permanently.
