Este trabalho investiga a possível relação entre uma vontade da verdade, a informação e os arquivos observando seus desdobramentos por meio da ação de documentar em sua gênese. Apresenta a discussão tendo como base o dispositivo filosófico de Michel Foucault sobre a questão da verdade e o significado do Arquivo. Localiza o problema com a discussão atual sobre a abertura dos arquivos do período do Regime Militar Brasileiro, em que se observa o confronto entre a vontade de verdade e as fontes documentais sob custódia dos Arquivos. Inclui no debate as diferentes perspectivas sobre a relação entre a verdade e a informação ao utilizar a Ciência da Informação, Arquivologia e História, disciplinas comumente ligadas à lida com as fontes documentais, apresentando as divergências de tais áreas do conhecimento sobre a validação da informação. Esta dissertação, por fim, conclui que os recentes estudos sobre uma Filosofia da Informação baseada nas práticas documentárias, iniciados por Bernd Frohmann no âmbito da Ciência da Informação, abrem um caminho possível de investigação para o enriquecimento do debate sobre o tema

This work investigates a possible relationship between a will of truth, the information and the archives observing its development through action to document in its genesis. Presents a discussion based on the philosophy of Michel Foucault on the question of truth and meaning of the Archive. Locates the problem with the current discussion on the opening of the archives of the period of the Brazilian Military Regime, where there is a conflict between truth and will of the documentary sources in the custody of the Archives. Includes discussion on the different perspectives on the relationship between truth and use the information to the Information Science, Archival Science and History, disciplines commonly linked to deals with the documentary sources, presenting differences in such areas of knowledge on the validation of information. This dissertation finally concludes that recent studies on a Philosophy of Information based on documentary practices, started by Bernd Frohmann in Information Science, open a possible path of research to enrich the debate on the subject

▼ Title: Values, Desirability and Ideology in CNN Travel – a Discourse Analysis on Travel Stories Author: Emmi Laine Course: Journalistikvetenskap, Kandidatkurs, H13 J Kand (Bachelor of Journalism, Fall 2013), JMK, Stockholm University, Sweden Aim: The aim is to examine which values and ideologies CNN Travel fulfills in their stories. Method: Qualitative discourse analysis. Summary: This Bachelor ́s thesis asks what is desirable, which are the values of CNN Travel, the major U.S. news corporation CNN ́s online travel site. The question has been answered through a qualitative discourse analysis on 20 chosen travel stories, picked by their relevancy, diversity, and their expressive tone. Due to the limited space and the specific textual method, the analysis was restricted to the editorial texts of these stories. The chosen method was discourse analyst Norman Fairclough ́s model of evaluation, which revealed the explicit and implicit ways the media texts suggest desired characteristics. These linguistic devices took the readers ́ agreement for granted, as they imposed a shared cultural ground with common values, which is a base for a mutual understanding. After identifying the explicit and implicit evaluations, they were organized according to some major discursive themes found in the texts, and finally analyzed in order to expose their underlying values. The results showed how these certain values brought forth certain ideologies, to some extent in keeping with recent research of tourism and travel journalism. As the study has been put into a larger context of related research, the following pages will first explain some larger concepts of discourse analysis, such as representation, cultural stereotypes, ideology and power. A cross-section from older to more contemporary theories in culture studies has been utilized; moving from Edward Said ́s postcolonial classic Orientalism, an example of cultural stereotyping, to the more recent topics of ‘promotion culture’ and consumerism, and tourism researcher John Urry ́s ideas about the consumption of places and the ‘tourist gaze.’ In the end, the study considers what kind of power does travel journalism possess over the represented tourism destinations. Finally, when questioning the travel journalists ́ legitimacy and power to represent the travel destinations, poststructuralist Michel Foucault ́s theory about the ‘regime of truth,’ as well as Antonio Gramsci ́s ideas of ‘hegemony,’ theory of dominance through consent, were discussed and confirmed.

A Comissão do Livro Negro Sobre o Regime Fascista foi criada em Portugal, em 1977, para investigar os abusos cometidos durante a vigência do regime ditatorial inaugurado em maio de 1926 e derrubado pelo golpe militar de 25 de abril de 1974. Surgiu por proposta do então Primeiro-Ministro, o socialista Mário Soares, como forma de combate ao ressurgimento de ideologias fascistas. A literatura diz-nos que foi o mais próximo que existiu, em Portugal, das clássicas comissões de verdade, entre as quais a Comissão Nacional sobre Pessoas Desaparecidas (CONADEP), instaurada na Argentina em 1983, é tida como a pioneira. Não há, contudo, quem tenha aprofundado esta questão na literatura sobre o caso português. De igual forma, os estudos comparados sobre comissões de verdade não reconhecem a existência de uma comissão em Portugal. Esta dissertação parte da definição de Priscilla Hayner (2011), tida como referência nesta área, e analisa o caso português através da triangulação de três tipos de dados – documentos de arquivo, imprensa da época e entrevistas qualitativas –, demonstrando que a Comissão do Livro Negro pode, à luz daquela definição, ser considerada uma comissão de verdade.

The Commission of the Black Book on the Fascist Regime (Comissão do Livro Negro Sobre o Regime Fascista, in Portuguese) was established in Portugal, in 1977, to investigate the abuses that occurred during the dictatorship that started in May 1926 and ended with the military coup of April 25, 1974. It was created by proposal of Mário Soares, former socialist Prime Minister, as a way to fight the resurgence of fascist ideologies. Literature tells us that this commission was the closest that ever existed in Portugal of the classic truth commissions, such as the National Commission on the Disappeared (CONADEP), established in Argentina in 1983 and recognized as the first truth commission. However, no one studied this issue in the literature on the Portuguese case. Similarly, comparative studies of truth commissions do not recognize the existence of a commision in Portugal. This investigation is based on the definition created by Priscilla Hayner (2011), considered a reference in this area of study, and analyzes the Portuguese case by triangulating three sources – archives, the press and qualitative interviews – proving that the Commission of the Black Book can, according to Hayner, be considered a truth commission.

▼ This thesis explores the problem of information systems evaluation by conceptualising it as a process in which the manager comes to an understanding about a system. In other words, information systems evaluation is a hermeneutic process. The thesis explicates this notion through an argument that is itself hermeneutic in its development, beginning with the mainstream functionalist view of information systems evaluation, and then considering an interpretive view of IS evaluation, each of which points to one of two stereotypes of IS evaluation and the manager engaged in this process: the objective/rational manager utilising objective/rational methods versus the subjective/political manager engaged in political manoeuvring, utilising objective/rational methods only as ritual or symbolism. Neither of these opposing stereotypes is satisfactory. Instead, this thesis proposes a dialectic view of information systems evaluation, in terms of which, rather than being a decision maker, the manager is in-the-world, evaluating systems in order to get the job done, on the basis of her thrownness in-the-world. This conceptualisation provides an intuitively appropriate account of evaluation on the part of an individual manager, but we must still consider how managers as members of the organisation, reach a common understanding about a system. This they do through a process of organisational learning as encultured knowing, in terms of which a narrative, situated, pragmatic knowledge is most useful in evaluation. Evaluation, in other words, happens in the course of skilful conversation. Such conversation is, however, not always skilful because the organisation is not just a collection of individuals but also a network of power relations. Conversations as generators of meaning are never held outside of power: systems evaluations as conversations cannot take place outside of a regime of truth. A post-dualist view of action as both constituted by and constituting structure, however, suggests that there is always the potential for genuinely hermeneutic and ethical conversation, provided it is both improvisatory and deconstructive. Having understood the requirement for improvisation and deconstruction, it is possible to suggest some heuristics for information systems evaluation based on these ideas. Auch wenn Michel Foucaults Vorstellung von Macht als allgegenwärtiger Kraft auf die Objektifizierung des Menschen in modernen Gesellschaften bereits angewandt wurde, haben sich nur wenige Forscher mit der Aushandlung von Machtverhältnissen in der Jugendliteratur befasst, da es dem Genre angeblich an Komplexität fehlt. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, wie die jugendlichen Protagonisten zweier dystopischer Jugendromane, nämlich James Dashners The Maze Runner und Malorie Blackmans Noughts and Crosses, Machtverhältnisse innerhalb der Wahrheitsregime ihrer Gesellschaften aushandeln, um die große Eignung von Jugendliteratur für ein kritisches Engagement zu demonstrieren. Um eine fruchtbare Analyse zu gewährleisten, sind eine Diskussion von Foucaults Machtbegriff sowie der Einfluss Immanuel Kants auf seine Vorstellung von kritischem Denken zentrale Bestandteile dieser Arbeit. Darüber hinaus stelle ich die vorherrschenden Einstellungen des literarischen Establishments zu diesem Genre in Frage, um zu zeigen, dass Jugendliteratur nicht die Anerkennung erhalten hat, die ihr gebührt, weil sie mit einer aetonormativen Norm verglichen wurde, die Erwachsene als intellektuellen Standard definiert. Schließlich zeigt eine detaillierte Analyse der beiden genannten Romane auf der Grundlage der fünf Indikatoren für die Analyse von Machtverhältnissen von Michel Foucault, dass Macht sowohl ermächtigend als auch einschränkend sein kann und dass dominante Machtdiskurse das Leben der jugendlichen Protagonisten in ihren dystopischen Gesellschaften diktieren, solange sie sich nicht ihrer eigenen Vernunft bedienen. Letztlich kann gesagt werden, dass die vorliegende Beobachtung unser Verständnis der sozialen Existenz in modernen Gesellschaften verbessern und beweisen könnte, dass selbst ein komplexes Thema von sozialer Bedeutung wie Macht durch Jugendromane behandelt werden kann.

Even though Michel Foucault’s notion of power as an omnipresent force has been applied to the objectification of human beings in modern societies, only few researchers have addressed the negotiation of power relations in young adult literature (YAL) due to the genre’s alleged lack of complexity. This thesis examines how the adolescent protagonists of two young adult dystopian novels, namely James Dashner’s The Maze Runner and Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses, negotiate power within their societies’ régimes of truth to demonstrate YAL’s great suitability for critical engagement. In order to guarantee a fruitful analysis, a discussion of Foucault’s concept of power as well as Immanuel Kant’s influence on his notion of critical thinking are pivotal parts of this thesis. Moreover, I contest prevailing attitudes of the literary establishment about the genre in order to show that YAL has not been given the credit that it deserves because it has been compared to an aetonormative norm, which defines adults as an intellectual standard.
