Each place has its own history, known or unknown, "significant" or"insignificant", similar or different to other places. Local history sometimes inquiresthe great moments of a place and other times its progress of events over time.Sometimes it deals with the examination of political, military, diplomatic andhistorical events according to the pattern of general history and sometimes with thestudy of everyday life.The engagement of people with local history is not something new to Westernhistoriography. It preceded their approach of national history and it is placed in time,as far as the European area is concerned, during the Renaissance. Greekhistoriography in particular, begins to appear in the late 18th and early 19th century,earlier than the beginning of the Greek revolution.The utilization of local history in the educational process provides pedagogicalbenefits which result from direct experience, realism, energy and individual work.The teaching of it encourages students to do research work, to have initiative, todevelop their sense of responsibility, to draw conclusions, to make remarks, and thecreativity which results from the new object adds a sense of satisfaction. Better results are also achieved concerning practice, observation, data searching, visiting sites,investigating cases and synthesis of speech.Important factors, which the teaching of local history at school largelydepends on, are the position and role of the teacher. Their attitudes towards thesubject of local history will help their students to some extent to shape their ownattitudes as well. The purpose of this survey, which was carried out in the first half of2006 among teachers in the prefecture of Pieria, is to examine the attitudes of teacherstowards the subject of local history and especially towards the teaching of it atPrimary School.The study consists of two parts. The first part sets out the theoreticalframework which consists of six units whereas the second sets out the researching onethat is the empirical data of the research. The structure of the detailed work is thefollowing:The first chapter sets out the figures concerning the conceptual framework ofhistory. It refers to the role and work of historian, the course of history at school andits relationship with the nation, and some general issues concerning history as ascience, but as a school subject as well.The second chapter refers to the conceptual framework of local history. Itclarifies what local history is, what its purpose is, its object and its relation to thegeneral history. There is a historic retrospection of the course of history and thetraining and further education of teachers in local history are examined.The third chapter refers to the subjects and sources of local history. Itexamines the areas which local history derives its themes from and even more thenature, the role and the use of sources that can be utilized in local history.The fourth chapter mentions issues which concern the teaching methodology of localhistory.
