Crumb rubber use in asphalt mixtures using wet process technology has been in practice for years in the United States with good performance history; however, it has some drawbacks that include the need for special blending equipment, high rubber-binder temperatures, and longer waiting time at mixing plants. Pre-treated crumb rubber technologies are emerging as a new method to produce asphalt rubber mixtures in the field. A new crumb rubber modifier known as Reacted and Activated Rubber (RAR) is one such technology. RAR (industrially known as “RARX”) acts like an Enhanced Elastomeric Asphalt Extender to improve the engineering properties of the binder and mixtures. It is intended to be used in a dry mixing process with the purpose of simplifying mixing at the asphalt plant. The objective of this research study was first to perform a Superpave mix design for determination of optimum asphalt content with 35% RAR by weight of binder; and secondly, analyse the performance of RAR modified mixtures prepared using the dry process against Crumb Rubber Modified (CRM) mixtures prepared using the wet process by conducting various laboratory tests. Performance Grade (PG) 64-22 binder was used to fabricate RAR and CRM mixtures and Performance Grade (PG) 70-10 was used to fabricate Control mixtures for this study. Laboratory tests included: Dynamic Modulus Test, Flow Number Test, Tensile Strength Ratio, Axial Cyclic Fatigue Test and C* Fracture Test. Observations from test results indicated that RAR mixes prepared through the dry process had excellent fatigue life, moisture resistance and cracking resistance compared to the other mixtures.

Todas as estruturas ao fim de determinado período de vida exigem intervenções que lhes permitam manter uma qualidade adequada às funções que desempenham e os pavimentos rodoviários não são, nesse campo, exceção, sendo alvo de frequentes reparações destinadas a lhes devolver níveis de funcionalidade, segurança e conforto adequados. Em Portugal, a maioria dos pavimentos rodoviários são do tipo flexível, razão pela qual esta dissertação abordará apenas esse tipo de pavimentos. As técnicas de conservação/reabilitação destes pavimentos têm também evoluído, desde a aplicação de camadas de reforço até técnicas de reciclagem de pavimentos degradados. O objetivo do presente trabalho consiste na análise das propriedades de um novo tipo de aditivo para misturas betuminosas, as Borrachas Reagidas e Ativadas designadas na terminologia anglo-saxónica por “Reacted and Activated Rubber”, vulgo RAR. Nesta tese procura-se desenvolver e divulgar este novo aditivo, dando-se particular atenção às vantagens da sua aplicação na reabilitação de pavimentos degradados abordando-se vários estudos que permitem perceber o comportamento dos pavimentos com essas soluções. A RAR modifica o betume virgem potenciando as propriedades de qualquer mistura bem dimensionada (p.e., a temperatura de amolecimento, resiliência e grau PG) permitindo obter misturas muito estáveis de performance superior (fadiga, à deformação permanente). Com a utilização de RAR é possível ajustar as granulometrias dos agregados e melhorar, do ponto de vista estrutural, o comportamento dos pavimentos nas vertentes da deformação permanente e da fadiga, retardando a reflexão de fendas e, na perspetiva funcional, essencialmente, reduzir o efeito de projeção de água e o ruído. Esta tese completa-se com o dimensionamento de uma nova solução de reparação de um importante trecho piloto na RAM esperando-se que, a curto prazo, a mesma venha a ter execução o que permitirá comprovar quer a eficácia técnica da mesma quer os ganhos financeiros e ambientais.

All structures, at some point in the end of their service lives, require interventions that allow them to maintain a quality level suitable for the functions that they play and road pavements are not, in this field, the exception, as they require frequent repairs which aim to restore their levels of functionality, safety, and comfort. In Portugal, the most common type of road pavement is flexible pavement, and this is the reason why this dissertation will address only this type of pavement. The techniques of maintenance/rehabilitation of flexible pavements have also envolved, from the application of reinforcement layers to deteriorated pavements recycling techniques.
