▼ Narratives have been proven to be an effective means by which people are persuaded. However, the exact psychological mechanism(s) that is/are responsible for persuasion have been debated. Some argue the process of transportation is necessary in determining whether or not the persuasive message will succeed (e.g., Green & Brock, 2000; Green & Clark, 2013; Murphy et al., 2011). Others have found character involvement to influence attitudes (Banerjee & Greene, 2012; de Graaf, Hoeken, Sanders, & Beentjes, 2011; Igartua & Barrios, 2012), behavioral intentions, and actual behaviors in the context of narratives (Moyer-Gusé, Chung, & Jain, 2011). Other say it is a combination of psychological mechanisms that is responsible for attitudes message consistent and behavioral intentions (Slater & Rouner, 2002). Theories such as the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) posit that narratives reduce consumers’ reactance, which then makes persuasion possible. This dissertation draws upon theories in both reactance (psychological reactance theory (PRT)) and narrative persuasion literature (EORM) in order to fulfill three objectives. First, this work uniquely identifies and distinguishes the role(s) transportation, character involvement, and/or emotional involvement play(s) in overcoming reactance. Second, this work distinguishes between perceived threat to freedom and reactance – a mediated process yet to be studied in narrative persuasion literature. Last, this dissertation explores the influence of reactance proneness as a moderating variable in the context of narratives. Results suggest a model that explains the relationship amongst the three psychological mechanisms and adds to reactance literature. Reactance was found to have direct effect on persuasion, though it is not a mediator of perceived threat and persuasion (as has been suggested in most PRT studies). Last, reactance proneness was, indeed, a moderating variable of the relationship between perceived threat and reactance. Suggestions for future studies in the area of reactance and narrative persuasion are offered.

Tourism and Sport

A growing number of states and cities in the United States have enacted smoke-free policies in public areas and, to improve the health outcomes of employees and patrons, have extended the policies to indoor tourism and hospitality venues including casinos, bars, and restaurants. However, the introduction of smoke-free policies in casinos has lowered gaming revenues by up to 20% in some jurisdictions (Eadington, 2011; Pakko, 2005; Thalheimer & Ali, 2008). Smoke-free policies have the potential to reduce the participation rate of gamblers either because smoking gamblers choose not to gamble if they cannot smoke, or because they choose to migrate to an alternative gambling opportunity which allows smoking. Since the goal of implementing smoke-free policies is to improve the health outcomes of employees and customers, some states' or locales' exemption from the bans may be temporary (Goodman, Agnew, McCaffrey, Paul, & Clancy, 2007). As a result of these changing external influences, it may be necessary to develop effective marketing strategies for continued growth in the casino industry. This study aimed to enhance insight into this phenomenon that results from external market influences by focusing on gamblers' behavioral changes with respect to their decisions to visit casinos when smoking bans are implemented. This dissertation proposed and tested a gambling-specific behavior model to examine the antecedents of individual changes in gambling patronage. The model was tested by using Path Analysis on data that were collected through an online survey of gamblers who visited gaming facilities in Deadwood, South Dakota. The results indicated that both the psychological reactance trait and the attitude importance of the freedom to smoke influence gambling behavioral changes after a smoking ban went into effect. Individual attitudes towards secondhand smoking also explained changes in casino patronage. No moderator effect was found in the path analysis. Supplementary analyses for other hospitality sectors were also conducted and the results also showed psychological reactance trait, the attitude importance of the freedom to smoke, and the attitude towards secondhand smoking explain changes in restaurant and bar patronage, and video lottery terminal participation. Discussion on the results of hypotheses testing and implications are presented followed by future research directions.

▼ Health communication messages usually consist of warnings about possible risks to one’s well-being. On the one hand, such messages could raise awareness of potential risks and cause viewers to follow the recommendation. On the other hand, these messages have the potential to threaten viewers’ freedom of action by telling them what to do and what not to do. This can generate psychological reactance, leading to boomerang effects, as numerous studies have shown. Scholars have identified several ways to reduce psychological reactance, including raising audience’s liking for the message content and increasing their credibility judgment of the message. However, almost all the existing literature has been focusing on identifying and utilizing message features to reduce reactance. As campaigns go online, many technological affordances of digital media, such as audience metrics that reflect audience evaluations, could provide important cues that influence user’s perceptions, evaluations, and credibility judgments of the message and the message source, which can in turn influence message acceptance. In addition, these affordances facilitate a variety of user actions, which could potentially empower users and afford them choices and control. Can such technological affordances attenuate psychological reactance individuals experience in response to health messages? The present dissertation aims at answering this question by examining the role played by the presence of audience size metrics (known as ‘bandwagon cues’) and the affordance of commenting action in reducing reactance and enhancing persuasive outcomes of health messages that pose a threat to freedom of action. To test the effect of technological affordances in influencing persuasion in health communication, a 2 (message threat: high vs. low) X 2 (bandwagon cue: high vs. low) X 2 (comment function: presence vs. absence) between-subjects experiment was conducted. Findings suggest that high bandwagon cues do indeed reduce reactance and improve message acceptance by eliciting bandwagon perceptions and feelings of isolation. Comment action is associated with a strong sense of agency, which in turn predicts individuals’ strong intention to follow the message recommendation. A series of moderated mediation tests reveal that effects of bandwagon cues override effects of message features, such that in low bandwagon conditions, message threat affects message acceptance through perceived threat to freedom, whereas in high bandwagon conditions, viewers’ perceived threat to freedom does not mediate the effect of message threat on persuasion. In addition, the action effect overrides effects of bandwagon cues—only when users do not leave a comment will high bandwagon cue improve persuasion by enhancing their evaluation of message persuasiveness; for users who post a comment, this effect is not found. ▼ The present dissertation applied the theoretical assumptions of Psychological Reactance Theory into a model depicting how individuals cognitively process reactanceinducing print messages utilizing a communication framework, the Reactance Processing Model (RPM). Specifically, the RPM conceptualizes reactance as a motivational state, investigates the degree of reactance arousal elicited by threat-tochoice, vivid, and explicit language (along with an additive effect of the aforementioned message features), empirically measures reactance restoration, and explores the role of issue involvement on message processing of reactance-inducing print messages advocating exercise and sunscreen usage by college students (N = 550). The RPM was tested using an experimental 2 (implicit vs. explicit) X 2 (non-vivid vs. vivid) X 2 (lowthreat- to-choice language vs. high-threat-to-choice language) posttest only design. Four general conclusions are drawn from this investigation. First, results support operationalizing reactance as a latent construct comprised of unfavorable cognitions and state anger. Second, of the three message features examined, high threat-to-choice and vivid language, along with a combination of both were found to elicit reactance. Explicit language did not trigger reactance in this study. Third, perceived high threat-tochoice language was positively associated with reactance whereas perceived vivid and explicit language was either negatively or not associated with reactance. Fourth, reactance was positively related to three types of restoration including ??Boomerang,?? ??Related Boomerang,?? and ??Vicarious Boomerang.?? Specifically, ??Boomerang?? restoration appears to be triggered regardless of threat attractiveness whereas ??Related Boomerang?? and ??Vicarious Boomerang?? require an attractive threat before being set into motion. ▼ Organizational control is a fundamental management process but has consistently presented a dynamic challenge to leadership. As organizations have increased in size and complexity, however, control of processes and individual behavior has become progressively more difficult. Membership in a group or organization does not necessarily imply aligned goals and behaviors, which can lead to dysfunction and create the perception that even more control is necessary. In addition, technological progress in the design of electronic monitoring devices has made observation and data collection relatively cheap and easy. More and more organizations are choosing to gather data about employees in this manner, but this observation could have negative effects not readily seen. These tactics could threaten employees and leave them in a negative emotional state where they look to reestablish their freedom, either directly or indirectly. The seminal theorist Jack Brehm called this emotional state Psychological Reactance (1966). I predict this elevated level of Reactance will result in behavioral reactions which can be ultimately harmful to the organization. Other control strategies that attempt to create alignment between an individual's identity and the company might be useful in mitigating these behaviors, particularly in relatively autonomous job settings where control is somewhat limited. This study tests the connection between how threatened an employee is by a control system, the psychological reactance experienced, and subsequent behaviors. The perceived organizational justification for a system and the strength of the individual identity with the company are theorized to moderate these relationships, as well. My sample includes commercial airline pilots (N=217) who fly for a major U.S. airline. I chose this group because their work environment is highly monitored yet they maintain a relatively large amount of autonomy. The findings generally support the hypothesized relationships and suggest that organizations consider multiple courses of action as well as negative side effects when choosing control mechanisms. ▼ Introduction: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of graphic components and message content on daily smokers’ responses to cigarette pack warning labels. It was hypothesized that graphic warning labels (GWLs) would produce increases in state psychological reactance, that loss-framed messages would generate increases in risk perception and psychological reactance, and that GWLs and gain-framed messages would interact to generate increases in motivation to quit smoking when compared to the GWL/loss-framed condition. It was also hypothesized that trait reactance, smoking behavior, and baseline motivation to quit smoking would moderate effects of the warning label exposures. Method: In a within-subjects design, sixty-two smokers completed four counter-balanced experimental tasks during which pictorial stimuli containing four possible combinations of warning labels and message frames were displayed (GWL/gain-framed, GWL/loss-framed, text-only/gain-framed, text-only/loss-framed). Participants answered self-report measures of reactance, cigarette cravings, motivation to quit smoking, and risk perceptions at baseline and after each experimental task. Results: No primary hypotheses were supported (all p’s > .05). However, hypothesized moderations did emerge, as did other several unexpected main effects. More specifically, exposure to GWLs suppressed cigarette cravings and enhanced motivation to quit smoking. Gain-framed messages suppressed state reactance among heavier, more frequent smokers, while loss-framed messages suppressed state reactance among smokers with higher motivation to quit. Gender, age, and race/ethnicity also moderated main effects of label type and label content. Discussion: These results suggest that cravings and state reactance are important constructs to consider when analyzing the impact of GWLs on smoking cessation. They also support the idea that targeting specific sub-populations of smokers with GWLs may increase the efficacy and impact of this tobacco control measure.

▼ Designing messages that successfully produce behavior change is a central objective for many health communication scholars. However, many health campaigns fail to effectively produce desired behavioral behavior, and occasionally boomerang effects can result in audience members adopting behaviors opposite of the recommended action. Psychological reactance theory – which posits that individuals cherish their personal freedoms, and react negatively when their freedom is threatened – provides a theoretical account for why persuasive messages can fail. The current study extends the literature on psychological reactance theory in two primary ways. First, by examining the role of descriptive and injunctive norms messages as antecedents to freedom threat and reactance. Second, by examining message elaboration as an antecedent and moderator of the reactance process. In Study 1, college students (N = 405) were randomly assigned to view print ads using a 3 (norms message: descriptive norm vs. injunctive norm vs. control) X 2 (forceful language: high vs. low) X 2 (topic: alcohol consumption, regular exercise) between subjects posttest only design. In Study 2, adult Internet users (N = 655) were randomly assigned to view print ads using a 2 (descriptive norm: present vs. absent) X 2 (injunctive norm: present vs. absent) X 2 (forceful language: high vs. low) X 2 (topic: organ donation, energy conservation) between-subjects posttest only design posttest only design. Four general conclusions are drawn from this investigation. First, descriptive and injunctive norms messages did not affect perceived descriptive or injunctive norms across all four topics and two populations. In other words, the norms message inductions consistently failed. This result is likely due to a confluence of factors, including the fact that the current studies made comparisons between two norms message frames, as well as a no-norm control message (rather than maximizing the variance with an artificially low and high norm condition as is more typical in the literature), the use of quite distal referent groups in the messages (“University students” and “Americans”), as well as the relatively short (~50 words) nature of the print messages. Second, despite following the two-step approach to modeling reactance in the current studies, modification indices for three of the four models suggested the addition of a direct path from an exogenous variable to state reactance. Given the lack of uniformity in the reactance literature in regards to how reactance is modeled vis-à-vi freedom threat, the current study holds implications for scholars interested in the operationalization of reactance. Third, the findings of the current investigation also have theoretical implications for theories of message processing such as the elaboration likelihood model. Across all four topics, greater message elaboration was associated with either diminished freedom threat (alcohol, organ donation) or diminished reactance (exercise, energy conservation), suggesting that reactance reduction… Advisors/Committee Members: Quick, Brian L. ▼ Negative attitudes held by neurotypical co-workers are often a major barrier to employment for IAS (Griffith, Totsika, Nash, & Hastings, 2011). Roskos-Ewoldsen and Fazio (1997) demonstrated that accessible beliefs are more predictive of people’s attitudes. The purpose of this dissertation was two-fold. First, it sought to disentangle the extant research on the relationship between attitudes and beliefs. Second, it aimed to test the effectiveness of a theoretically-based narrative intervention designed to bolster pre-existing positive and change pre-existing negative attitudes toward working alongside individuals on the autism spectrum by increasing the accessibility of certain beliefs. Study 1 was of a 2 (1 v. 4 belief repetitions) x 2 (transportation high v. low) x 3 (autism label: beginning, end, none) between-subjects experimental design. Participants (N = 555) were randomly assigned to watch a narrated video. After, participants completed a belief listing task. To determine which attitude-belief relationship model accounted for the most of variance, a hierarchical analysis was conducted. Results indicated that the modified summation model (Cronen & Conville, 1973; 1975a; 1975b) did the best job of predicting attitudes.To test the effectiveness of the narrative intervention, several hypotheses were proposed. Unfortunately, many of the hypotheses testing the direct effects of the manipulations were not supported. Two models were developed to test the relationships between two key concepts from the entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM; Moyer-Guse, 2008). Results provided evidence supporting significant inverse relationships between both transportation and identification and reactance. Additionally, findings suggested a positive relationship between belief accessibility and attitudes. However, the lack of support for a successful manipulation impedes the opportunity to make causal inferences. Study 2 aimed to replicate support for the more parsimonious modified summation model (Cronen & Conville, 1973; 1975a; 1975b) as the best model for predicting attitudes from beliefs found in Study 1. Also, Study 2 sought to determine if motivation influenced belief accessibility. Study 2 was of a 2 (1 v. 4 belief repetitions) x 2 (motivation to process the message: high vs. low) x 2 (autism mentioned or autism not mentioned) between-subjects experimental design. As with Study 1, participants (N = 401) viewed one version of a narrated slideshow.Again, results from Study 2 garnered support for Cronen and Conville's (1973; 1975a; 1975b) model. For the relationship between motivation and attention, findings revealed that when self-involvement was increased, individuals paid more attention. However, there was no evidence of an indirect effect of motivation on attitudes via belief accessibility. ▼ Much of recent media censorship research focuses on the institutional characteristics of media systems that define what we consider open versus closed media environments. The primary focus of these studies is to assess the negative consequences of media censorship on political learning (i.e., political belief accuracy). Despite these scholarly endeavors, the psychological factors that mediate the relationship between the information environment and citizen knowledge are generally overlooked. In order to better understand these factors, we must look beyond the structural nature of media systems, and evaluate the role of affective, cognitive, and behavioral responses of citizens who perceive they are living in a censored information environment. The objective of this project is to address these psychological processes by applying the concept of reactance to a novel theoretical framework that explores the relationship between perceived threat to media freedom, online information seeking, and accuracy of political beliefs.The framework is applied in three studies using samples from three countries with vastly different media systems (Turkey, Iran, and the U.S.). The objective is to assess the hypotheses, which suggest higher levels of reactance towards threats to mainstream media freedom will motivate individuals to turn to alternative online information seeking, which will then influence political belief accuracy with respect to broad social and political issues. The underlying premise of these studies is that those who exhibit negative affective and cognitive responses to threats towards their media freedom are more likely to engage in activities or behaviors that supplement their perceived loss of information. Such active pursuit of information through the diverse alternative online sources is then expected to augment political belief accuracy in largely restrictive media environments. It is further suggested that in circumstances where the mainstream media regularly offers diverse perspective (i.e., the U.S.), this alternative online information seeking will diminish political belief accuracy, due to the ideologically polarized nature of online sources. The moderating influence of internal political efficacy, response efficacy, technological efficacy, perceived affordance of visibility, and learned helplessness are also tested in the model.The results of the three studies broadly demonstrate support for the idea that reactance promotes online information seeking, especially among individuals who experience higher levels of internal political efficacy and perceived visibility of online information (only in Iran). The outcomes also suggest that this online engagement enhances political belief accuracy, with an inverse effect in more politically partisan online information environments (i.e., the U.S.).
