▼ This study investigated the effect of the violation of
the unidimensionality assumption on parameter estimation and
data-
model fit in the unidimensional and multidimensional
Rasch
models. Three factors were manipulated: degree of
multidimensionality, sample size, and test length. The accuracy of
parameter estimation was evaluated by RMSE, Bias, and Pearson
correlation. Data-
model fit was investigated in terms of Infit and
Outfit mean square and its corresponding t statistic, and Type I
error rate. The results indicated that test length had the largest
influence on person ability parameter estimation while sample size
had the largest effect on item difficulty parameter estimation. The
degree of multidimensionality showed an interesting pattern of
effects on parameter estimation. Specifically, when a test has a
moderate or higher degree of multidimensionality, the
multidimensional
Rasch model yielded more accurate person ability
estimates compared to the unidimensional
Rasch models, while when a
test has a low degree of multidimensionality, the unidimensional
models showed robustness to violation of the unidimensionality
assumption. However, in item difficulty parameter estimation, the
degree of multidimensionality did not affect on the accuracy of the
item parameter estimation. The results of data-
model fit analysis
indicated that sample size had a significant influence on the mean
square fit of item difficulty estimates while it did not affect the
t statistic fit. Also, test length affected both the mean square
and its t statistic fit indices of person ability estimates. In
general, Infit mean square and its t statistic indices were more
stable than Outfit indices. The unidimensional and multidimensional
Rasch models showed little difference in the Type I error rate as
multidimensionality increased. However, the Type I error rate of
the mean square fit of item parameter estimates tended to decrease
with increase in sample size and that of ability parameter
estimates decreased with increase in test length. The Type I error
rate of the t statistic fit was not affected by sample size and
test length.

▼ This study is aim to develop and validate the Creative Life Style Check List by analysis of the literature scale and integration expert opinions. This scale for the self-report scale, a total of 28 questions, uses Likert five-point scale scoring. There were four subscale, âwildly life experiences â, âimaginationâ, ânew creation and expressionâ, and âopenness mindâ. Purposive sampling method to extract the Sun Yat-sen University, Ministry of students as the study sample, the pre-pilot scale a total of 304 samples, a total of 983 formal scale samples.
The MPCM analysis by the
Rasch model is to examine the scale of reliability and validity. Content validity Infit MNSQ is between 0.75 ~ 1.3logits, each subscale internal consistency from .831 to .893. Scale internal consistency reliability was .93. Construct validity of the comparison of PCM and MPCM that estimated residuals of MPCM smaller than PCM. That means four-dimensions
model more fit than one-dimension
model. The correlation between each subscale is in the range of 0.684 ~ 0.861. The validity generalization, the scale of the boys and girls difficulty estimate differences in the range of 0.000 to 0.198, on behalf of this scale is no gender differential item functioning (DIF). Participants separated reliability coefficient of 0.844 to 0.900 that means this scale can stability measure the location of participants of the creativity construct. Difficulty estimated values of each subscale in the formal questionnaire and the pre-test scale ranged from .815 to .944 is high correlation. And p <0.05 show the scale has cross-sample stability.

▼ Background: The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a population-level measure of five developmental domains at school-entry age. The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the potential of the EDI as an indicator of early development in Ireland. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 47 primary schools in 2011 using the EDI and a linked parental questionnaire. EDI (teacher completed) scores were calculated for 1,344 children in their first year of full-time education. Those scoring in the lowest 10% of the sample population in one or more domains were deemed to be 'developmentally vulnerable'. Scores were correlated with contextual data from the parental questionnaire and with indicators of area and school-level deprivation.
Rasch analysis was used to determine the validity of the EDI. Results: Over one quarter (27.5%) of all children in the study were developmentally vulnerable. Individual characteristics associated with increased risk of vulnerability were being male; under 5 years old; and having English as a second language. Adjusted for these demographics, low birth weight, poor parent/child interaction and mother’s lower level of education showed the most significant odds ratios for developmental vulnerability. Vulnerability did not follow the area-level deprivation gradient as measured by a composite index of material deprivation. Children considered by the teacher to be in need of assessment also had lower scores, which were not significantly different from those of children with a clinical diagnosis of special needs. all domains showed at least reasonable fit to the
Rasch model supporting the validity of the instrument. However, there was a need for further refinement of the instrument in the Irish context. Conclusion: This thesis provides a unique snapshot of early development in Ireland. The EDI and linked parental questionnaires are promising indicators of the extent, distribution and determinants of developmental vulnerability.

▼ In this study, we surveyed 675 parents in Kaohsiung city about the status of their young childrenâs information communication technology use and examined parental attitudes toward this status, as well as the relationship between socio-economic status and childrenâs ICT use. The results found that about half of the parents think the most appropriate age for young children to access ICT (e.g., computers and smartphones) is after six years old, but actually, more than 80% of their children had ICT experience before six years old. It shows that, for parents, there is a contradiction between the ideal and the real age of childrenâs ICT use. In addition, the results of
Rasch model analysis showed that parents think âcognitive learningâ is the most positive impact of childrenâs ICT use, and the "addiction and over-reliance" is the negative impact that parents are most worried about. Finally, according to the study results, we propose recommendations for future research.

▼ In everyday life, we frequently explore surfaces with our fingertips to capture aspects of their physics, such as texture or toughness. Furthermore, such explorations are often accompanied by a perception of (un)pleasantness. It is therefore of interest to investigate the relationship that could exist between the sensation of pleasantness and the physical attributes of explored surfaces. Typically, the sensation of pleasantness in touch is indirectly assessed, generating ordinal data. Such data lack fundamental psychometric properties that are essential to carry out objective and quantitative analyses. To address this problem, probabilistic measurement models (e.g. Rasch model) can be used to establish linear, unidimensional and invariant scales from ordinal scores by locating subjects and items along a single underlying scale. In this thesis, the Rasch Model has been used to establish a basis for future investigations on pleasantness perception at fingertip level. Indeed, a unidimensional, linear and invariant Pleasant Touch Scale has been developed, which classifies 37 different everyday life materials according to their pleasantness levels. The pleasantness levels suggested that the pleasantness perception, occurring during active surface exploration, had a certain correlation with aspects of the microgeometry of the surfaces as well as with the frictional properties arising when sliding fingers on them. These indications were thoroughly investigated during active and passive tactile surface exploration experiments. Moreover, the effect of surface temperature on the perception of pleasant touch was studied. In conclusion, all studies indicated that surface topography and frictional forces resulting from surface exploration are important factors for pleasantness sensation during touch with a fingertip.

▼ Healthy eating patterns have attracted the interest of the researchers and the media as it is perceived as the most effective health promotion strategy to safeguard human's health. Several studies conclude that the incidence of chronic diseases (obesity, overweight, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stress, stroke and cancer) largely is related to lifestyle, dietary factors and lack of physical exercise. In addition, studies indicated that healthy eating is strongly associated with socioeconomic characteristics like age, gender and concern about health. The aim of this study is to examine consumers' attitudes towards healthy eating and the difficulty to adopt a permanent healthy eating style using the Rasch modeling approach. Since consumers are influenced by a wide range of socio-economic characteristics (gender, age, income, education and occupation) while they are selecting their meals, identifying the main determinants of consumers’ attitudes towards healthy eating and food choices can contribute to establish healthy eating lifestyle. Indeed, the use of theoretical and psychological approaches has enlightened the main key drivers for the consumers to follow healthy eating. In this study the Rasch model is applied to assess the obstacles consumers are facing to adopt and follow healthy eating patterns and to relate them with a range of attitudinal and socio-economic factors faced by individuals. The study is based on data collected from 793 consumers in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece; and was carried out on the basis of a self-administered questionnaire. Results indicate that consumers, who aim to follow healthy eating, the most important is to consume fresh vegetables, fruits, natural foods and fishes. Alsο, participants evaluate their heath good, do not smoke and physical activity is limited. Thus, results highlight significant differences among the consumers in changing their food consumption patterns with healthy ones. Finally, less informed consumers with low level income tend to exhibit higher levels of difficulty to change eating patterns. Younger aged, unemployment and low level of education are determinant factors on the difficulty of healthy eating.

▼ [Truncated abstract] This study evaluates a high stakes test, the Indonesian Scholastic Aptitude Test (ISAT) from the perspectives of the Rasch model and its paradigm. This test has been developed by the Center for Educational Assessment (CEA) in Jakarta and has been used as one of the admission tests for undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study in some public universities in Indonesia. The CEA has formed a bank of items which is used to construct different sets of items for different purposes. For this study the data from two different sets of items from the item bank, one administered to students for undergraduate entry, and one for postgraduate entry, were available for analysis. Each test consists of three subtests, called Verbal, Quantitative, and Reasoning, to reflect the capacities they are intended to assess. Firstly, this study examines the internal structure of the subtests by applying the Rasch model and its paradigm. Secondly, this study examines the stability of item bank parameters for the items of the subtests. Thirdly, the predictive validity of the test is examined. The Rasch model can be applied as primarily a statistical model used to model data. However, its use in this thesis goes beyond this narrow focus: rather the Rasch paradigm is used as a framework for the whole study. The case for the model is that the comparisons among persons are invariant with respect to which items are used from a class of relevant items, and that the comparisons among items are invariant with respect to the class of persons. These invariance properties are independent of any particular data set.
They are especially important when not all persons can attempt the same items on every occasion, which occurs, for example, when item banks are used. However, data will have these invariant properties only if they fit the model. It follows that data are examined for fit to the model, and that if data do not fit the model, it is the data that need to be examined and a substantive explanation for the misfit sought. The purpose of the examination is a better understanding of the design of the instrument and the variable and context of measurement. It is this perspective that involves the broader Rasch paradigm, not merely the application of the model. In this paradigm validity, reliability and fit of the data to the model are integrated. are examined for fit to the model, and that if data do not fit the model, it is the data that need to be examined and a substantive explanation for the misfit sought. The purpose of the examination is a better understanding of the design of the instrument and the variable and context of measurement. It is this perspective that involves the broader Rasch paradigm, not merely the application of the model. In this paradigm validity, reliability and fit of the data to the model are integrated. In this study the test is examined not only according to the Rasch model but also according to the Rasch paradigm. Accordingly, the aspects that were examined in addition to the fit of data to the…

▼ Educational Psychology
The purpose of this descriptive, ex post facto study was to examine possible relationships between demographic, pre-programmatic, and programmatic factors with success in a final Advanced Medical-Surgical nursing course and the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, as well as their predictive abilities. Data were obtained from the academic records of 209 full-time and part-time nursing program graduates who completed an upper-division baccalaureate nursing degree at a mid-Atlantic private urban university. Descriptive and inferential analyses were utilized to discover possible relationships between the two dependent variables and the various independent variables in groupings suggested by Carroll's (1963) model of School Learning. Two models were derived to predict success in the nursing program as evidenced by successful completion of the final Advanced Medical-Surgical nursing course and passing the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt. The first model identified age at entrance to the nursing program and repeating a science course as the two factors that explained approximately 49% of the variance in the Advanced Medical-Surgical course performance. The second model was able to predict 97.2% correctly those graduates who would be successful on the NCLEX-RN, and only identify 43.8% of those candidates likely to fail. The overall classification ability by the model was 89%. Implications for nursing educators are that more attention needs to be given to admission policies/procedures, and that students entering nursing programs require routine standardized evaluation, identification and remediation of nursing content gaps in order to be successful throughout their nursing studies and ultimately on the NCLEX-RN.

▼ Tarptautinis švietimo tyrimas PISA
(Programme for International Student Assessment) tiria
penkiolikmečių mokinių skaitymo gebėjimus, matematinį ir
gamtamokslį raštingumą. Taip pat tyrimo metu renka informaciją apie
mokinį, jo pomegius, informacinius ir komunikacinių technologijų
išmanymą ir naudojimą, namų aplinką, mokyklą kurioje jis mokosi ir
pan. Informacija surinkta tyrimo metu yra vertinga švietimo
tyrėjams, sprendimų priėmėjams, švietimiečiams ir pan. Šio darbo
tikslas – taikant hierarchinė regresiją rasti mokinių matematinio
raštingumo rezultatų prikausomybę nuo mokymo(si) aplinkos veiksnių.
Kadangi mokiniai yra pirmojo lygmens objektai, o mokyklos – antrojo
lygmens, todėl analizuojant duomenis reikia atsižvelgti į duomenų
hierarchiškumą. Besąlyginio hierarchinio modelio analizė atskleidė,
kad 32 % Lietuvos penkiolikmečių matematinio raštingumo rezultatų
skirtumų lemia mokyklos. Taikant hierarchinį tiesinį modeliavimą,
sudarytas geriausias hierarchinis tiesinis modelis su atitinkamais
kintamaisiais bei užrašyta lygtis, kuri gali būti naudojama
Lietuvos penkiolikmečių matematinio raštingumo rezultatų
prognozavimui.

15-yers-old reading, mathematical and science literacy. A lot of
information about student‘s, theirs hobbies, knowledge and use of
information and comunication technology, home and school
environment and etc. is collected during PISA survey. The collected
information is valuable source of information for researchers,
policy makers, educators and ect. The main purpose of this work,
“Analysis of Lithuanian Students Literacy Using International
Survey PISA 2009 Data“, is using hierarchical regression to find
the students' mathematical literacy dependency of training and
learning environment factors. The students are first-level objects
and schools - at the second level, so data analysis should take
into account the data hierarchy. Unconditional hierarchical model
analysis revealed that 32 % of Lithuanian 15-years-old students’
mathematical literacy outcomes determined by the school. Best
hierarchical linear model with relevant variables was done using
hierarchical linear modelling. Also a prognostic equation of
Lithuaninan 15-years-old students matematic literacy was
created.

▼ This study aimed to validate a learning progression (LP) for the scientific imagination (Wang, Ho, & Cheng, revised) based on a measurement approach using the BEAR Assessment System (BAS; Wilson, 2005, 2009) in an attempt to better understand the core ideas and the developmental path of the scientific imagination process as well as align curriculum, instruction, and assessment through LP. Participants in this study were selected from Taiwan, and classified into two categories. The first category included 767 3th to 6thgrade elementary school students, were administered the Scientific Imagination Test-Verbal (SIT-Verbal; Wang et al., revised). Besides, two award-winning teachers were interviewed in order to achieve more information for the LP. The second category included one award-winning experimental teacher who implemented a set of curriculum infusing scientific imagination and 41 6th grade elementary school students (experimental group: 22 students; control group: 19 students). For instruments, The SIT-Verbal, Imagery Questionnaire, the outline of interview, checklist of teaching (Cheng & Chuang, 2011), and curriculum of âman lien chi Miaoâ (Theng, 2014) were used in this study. Among these, the SIT-Verbal covered four key components of scientific imagination process: brainstorming, association, transformation/elaboration, and conceptualization/organization/formation; the Imagery Questionnaire covered one imagery ability which could generate imagery, objects, and pictures in mind. For analysis, firstly, the multiple validities (Wolfe & Smith, 2007) of the SIT-Verbal were assessed using the
Rasch partial credit
model (PCM; Master, 1982). Secondly, nonequivalent pretest-posttest design was used to explore teaching effect of scientific imagination between experimental group and ccompared group in pre- and post-test using one-way repeated measured ANOVA.
The findings showed that (1) the BEAR assessment system and
Rasch measurement approaches provided a feasible framework for developing validated tools to assess the LP of scientific imagination; (2) the empirical data supported studentsâ scientific imagination progressed âfrom brainstorming, association, transformation/elaboration, to conceptualization/organization/formation; (3) the developmental effect of scientific imagination was not achieved in experimental stage, however the teaching practice integrated assessment feedback facilitated studentsâ motivation and performance of scientific invention.
Based on the findings, the researcher suggested that develop a set of items for assessing LPs of scientific imagination and a series of materials for teaching practices integrated assessment feedback. Besides, to control interfered factors in experimental teaching, to explore different factors influenced imagination, such as personality and surroundings etc., and to develop other LPs in other domain using BAS could be considered in further studies. Finally, exploration and validation of LPs need to iterateconsistently based on multiple empirical evidence. The contribution…

▼ The purpose of this study is to explore the perspectives of secondary school students on effective and ineffective bullying prevention strategies. The author developed the perceived-effectiveness on bullying prevention strategies scale (PBPS) and conducted interviews to acquire a more profound understanding of why bullying prevention strategies may be considered as effective or ineffective by secondary school students. The participants in this study were 664 secondary school students from southern Taiwan, including 320 boys (48.2%) and 344 girls (51.8%). This study used questionnaire survey to collect data, and the
Rasch measurement to test reliability and validity of the scale. Results show that the PBPS scale has good reliability and validity. The bullying prevention strategies considered as effective by secondary school students were âTelling teachers and adultsâ, âAsking the teachers to talk with bullies seriouslyâ, âAsking the teachers to talk with victimsâ. The bullying prevention strategies rated as ineffective were âTelling bullies to stop itâ, âBefriending the victimsâ, âAttending the bullying prevention activities hosted by the schoolâ. The limitations and suggestions of these results are discussed at the end of this study.

▼ This study aims at revising the Chinese-version Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (Ho, Chik, & Thorson, 2008) using
Rasch analysis, and to compare differences between two kinds of data collectionâweb-based questionnaire and paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Participants were 634 (sample 1) and 587 (sample 2) undergraduate students respectively for item revision and validation. Sample 2 were grouped into 4 groups to test differences between the two kinds of data collection.
Rasch Rating Scale
Model analysis was used to assess
model-data fit, and MANCOVA was employed to compare the differences between the web-based and paper-and-pencil questionnaires.
The results indicated that three dimensions of the revised 18-item scaleâhumor production, attitudes towards humor, and coping humorâshowed good
model-data fit. All items had no statistically significant differential item functioning in genders (boys and girls) and in ways of testing (the web-based and the paper-and-pencil). Reliabilities for humor production, attitudes towards humor, and coping humor were .89, .81, and .81 respectively. The revised scale was further examined through construct-related validity through general self-efficacy and emotional adaptive ability. Furthermore, only the dimension of attitudes towards humor had a statistically significant difference in ways of testing. Suggestions for future research on developing instrument of sense of humor were proposed.

▼ The article aims to measure implicit gender-science stereotype of female and male individuals. A Many-Facet
Rasch Measurement analysis was used to disentangle the contribution of specific associations to the overall IAT measure. A preference for associating males with science and females with liberal arts is observed in both gender groups. Male participants show stronger stereotype than female participants, and this preference is driven primarily by associating males with science rather than females with liberal arts. Besides, some stimulus words played different roles to the overall IAT effects. This research supported that MFRM is a useful method for exploring IAT. As consequences, we argue that researchers should be more careful when choosing stimulus for IAT and interpreting IAT effects.

▼ The current study examined 1960 data from Project
TALENT (Flanagan et al., 1962), a study investigating students'
talents and career aspirations using a comprehensive battery
measuring cognitive ability and interests. In this paper, we
evaluate the psychometric properties of the abstract reasoning
measure – one of several measures used in the battery – because it
was not done so when the battery was initially created. A reason to
undertake a
Rasch analysis is because the original investigators
summed scores for each of the measures and used these summed scores
in further analyses. Initially, we compare the
Rasch model to two
alternative models, the two- and three-parameter
model and identify
any items that do not fit the
Rasch model. We then examine whether
the
Rasch model of the abstract reasoning measure is invariant
across grade level and sex. Results indicated that the data did fit
the
Rasch model, however, one item did not fit and was excluded in
subsequent analyses. Metric invariance held for grade level and
sex.

▼ Stroke is one of the chronic diseases that have important burden at individual, family and society levels. Particularly, long-term post-stroke rehabilitation represents a great challenge for health systems. Unfortunately, the prevalence of stroke is increasing and the number of stroke survivors is rising worldwide. Consequently, the economic charge of stroke survivors’ rehabilitation will expand in both low- and high-income countries, unless appropriate strategies are developed. This thesis has examined the effectiveness of brisk walking in promoting functional independence in people with chronic stroke condition in Belgium (Europe) and Benin (West-Africa). Given the important contribution of physical fitness and activity limitations in functional independence, this thesis has investigated on their measurement. This investigation led to the development of two outcome measures: PWC75%/kg as a physical working capacity index and ACTIVLIM-Stroke as activity limitations measure in stroke patients. The intervention designed to promote functional independence was mainly based on walking through group-based training sessions which present the advantage of reducing the costs of long-term rehabilitation. Group-based brisk walking appears to be a cost-effective approach in improving functional independence in selected chronic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the generalization of our findings to whole chronic stroke population requires more investigation on larger sample.

▼ Stroke is the most common cause of severe adult disability in the western world (Greenwood et al. 2009) and a major health problem all over the world (Kendall et al. 2007; Proot et al. 2002; Wade et al. 1987; Yu-Ying et al. 2002). In Belgium, the incidence of stroke is estimated at 2.62 per 1000 persons (Buntinx et al. 2002). Stroke may affect the social roles of the patient and it is therefore important to take into account the concept of social participation and the environmental and personal factors which may facilitate or hinder the fulfillment of the patients’ social roles (Clarke et al. 1999).
In the last decade, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF, 2001) model, developed by the WHO (World Health Organization 2001) shows the interaction of personal factors (e.g. age, gender, education) and environmental factors (e.g. physical, social, attitudinal obstacles/facilitators) and their impact on body functions/structures, activities, and participation. Therefore, to understand the patient’s functioning in addition of the three dimensions of the ICF model, it is important to take into account that the person requires autonomy to execute activities in real-life situations. Few tools have been developed to measure the participation domain of the ICF. Similarly, few tools allow the measurement of satisfaction.
The concept of satisfaction corresponds to the person’s own perspective on his or her performance in activities and life situations that meet his or her needs and should not necessarily be related to the difficulty in the performing of the activity or the life situation. Because satisfaction is subjective, the patient’s self-report has been described as a valid measure and can be measured by eliciting the patient’s perceived satisfaction with life situations using a questionnaire with ordered categories. The main purposes of the present work are (1) to develop a new scale, based on the Rasch model, for measuring patients’ satisfaction with activity and participation in stroke patients, (2) to investigate the responsiveness of this scale, (3) to study the relationship over time between body functions and activity with perceived satisfaction of activity and participation.
The present research stress the importance of considering and measuring satisfaction per se. Satisfaction with activity and participation seems to represent an interesting perspective in a long term rehabilitation program and probably reflects how the patients experience their activity limitations and participation restrictions. However, the process is complex and satisfaction is not simply the integration of body functions and activities. Indeed, satisfaction cannot simply be inferred from body functions and activities as it depends on complex interactions between functional, personal and environmental factors.

▼ Over the last 3 years the research I was involved in could for the most part be classified in terms of epidemiologic research design. This thesis does not discuss the intricacies of carrying out an epidemiologic study but rather describes the different applications of epidemiologic study designs including the advantages and disadvantages of each. With the ever-growing amount of literature, it is essential to understand the benefits and limitations of each type of study for clinical decision-making and for selecting the appropriate design when attempting to answer research questions. This thesis concludes by giving examples of different studies performed by the author that exemplify specific studies discussed in the introduction.

▼ The present study is an item-level evaluation of the reading test of the Malaysian University English Test (MUET), the high-stakes entrance test for Malaysian pre-degree students. It comprises an in-depth analysis of student responses at item level as an explanation why this compulsory entry test appears to be formidable challenge for test takers. The study aims to assess the quality of the test items from the framework of two widely used psychometric theories – classical test theory (CTT) and the Rasch model. Additionally, it examines the effects of item features and examinees’ characteristics in determining the difficulty level of the test items. These two issues have been explored by using regression analysis and differential item functioning (DIF) respectively. The findings of item analysis demonstrate the complementary nature of CTT and the Rasch model as useful tools for test design and evaluation. The study also reports that item difficulty of this reading test is influenced largely by question format features (particularly plausibility of the distractors) rather than passage-related variables and question-type variables. DIF analysis points out that natural/real differences are seen as a possible explanation for variation between the various groups being examined. These findings, though subject to limitations, have practical implications for instruction, test construction and educational research. Also, it provides directions for future exploration of several issues identified through this study. Due to the limitation of the study, it only focuses on one of the four components of MUET, that is reading test.

▼ Background: As established in professional codes of
ethics, critical care nurses must be equipped to provide good
(ethical) patient care. This requires ethical awareness, which
involves recognizing the ethical implications of all nursing
actions (ranging from the mundane to the dilemmatic). Ethical
awareness is imperative in successfully addressing patient needs,
however, evidence suggests that the ethical import of everyday
issues may often go unnoticed by nurses in practice. Assessing
nurses’ ethical awareness is a necessary first step in preparing
nurses to identify and manage ethical issues in the highly dynamic
critical care environment. Purpose: To use
Rasch principles to
develop a psychometrically sound instrument to assess the nature
and extent of critical care nurses’ ethical awareness in the
context of everyday nursing practice, and to assess the success of
scale development using a
Rasch model. Method: An item bank
representing nursing actions was developed (33 items). Content
validity testing with nursing ethics experts (n = 5) was performed
(CVI-I = 1). Eighteen items were selected for face validity testing
with graduate nursing students (n = 7). After revisions, two
full-scale pilot administrations were performed to run item
analyses. Sample: Critical care nurses (n = 116) at a large
academic teaching hospital in New England. Results: Pilot test
analyses suggest sufficient item invariance across samples and
sufficient construct validity. Final analyses demonstrate a
progression of items uniformly along a hierarchical continuum;
items that match respondent ability levels; response categories
that are sufficiently used; a Principle Components Analysis
demonstrating randomness of residuals, and adequate internal
consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.83). Mean ethical awareness scores
were in the low/moderate range (M = 34.9/54; logit = -0.21).
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the Ethical Awareness
Scale (EAS) is a psychometrically sound, reliable, and valid
measure of ethical awareness in critical care nurses.

▼ The adoption of eLearning in higher education (HE) is growing in the educational technology literature. However, high-impact, effective, eLearning applications are rarely reported. How learners interact with the technical components during the learning process is yet to be fully understood. The interactivity is a principle element for the design and evaluation of digital learning environments. Its nature and effects in relation to learners' performance is critical for the selection of eLearning strategies and the articulation of ePedagogical practices. Thus, this thesis aims to investigate the ePedagogical environment to understand the nature of the interactive effects of instructional delivery modes and individual's cognitive preferences on learners' performance. The investigation is driven by measuring the effects of the interplay between the two key variables representing each dimension. Data were obtained through a series of 2x3 factorial quasi-experiments which were conducted at four HE institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The empirical studies examined the performance of 162 female undergraduates who had different cognitive preferences and received instruction through one of three delivery modes: i) face-to-face, ii) fully computerised and iii) blended modes. The participants were in their third year of the undergraduate Management of Information Systems program and were required to enrol in the course Information Systems Analysis and Design for the first time. Three instruments were utilised for the data collection; i) the cognitive style analysis test (CSA), ii) the pre-test and iii) the post-test. The validity and reliability of the cognitive performance measures (the pre-and-post-tests) were established under the auspices of the Rasch model using the QUEST interactive test analysis system software. The cognitive performance measurement scale was found to be unidimensional with a strong item fit statistic, ranging from 0.81 to 1.00, indicating that the test-items have measured the intended underlying construct. The subsequent performance analyses were conducted using Cohen's effect size to compare the extent of differences between the experimental groups. The results confirmed the interactional effects of delivery modes and learners' cognitive preference on their cognitive performance. It was also found that participants were able to achieve their best performance under the computerised delivery mode, which had the highest effect size of ES= 0.29 among the F-2-F and blended modes. This thesis enhances the conceptualisation of the interactivity between the human and technological dimensions of the eLearning environment. It highlights the nature and level of the interaction, information that may be utilised to improve the design and evaluation practices of personalised HE learning. The study also demonstrates that the application of the Rasch measurement approach is effective for agile instructional design and performance measurement. It proposes an empirically validated…

The study aims to conduct an analysis of the psychometric characteristics of the scale of
impulsivity UPPS-P, in the Portuguese population through the Rasch model. The sample
consists of 3131 people, of both sexes (55.6% men and 44.4% women) with a mean age of 43
years (SD = 12.3). The results show that the original system of four answer categories of
UPPS-P does not work properly, either in full scale, or in other dimensions. Moreover, it was
observed that two Linacre lines were not successfully overcome, particularly in terms of
consistency and measurements between and among categories and measurements, which is
very low among some of them, as well as a minimum interval between transition steps, which
is not overcome. These findings undermine the scale and degrade the measure, so it sought an
aggregate response categories, in order to tackle these weaknesses found. Thus, a suitable
solution was obtained by aggregating two categories of responses from the UPPS-P scale.
After the review, the results showed that all guidelines of Linacre were successfully overcome
and that enable a range of assessment of impulsivity with better psychometric characteristics,
more useful and effective.

One problem within multiple choice tests is that even if a test taker does not know the answer of an item he or she can solve it, simply through lucky guessing. The aim of this study was not only to investigate if there are different guessing effects between the multiple choice format “1 out of 5” and the sequential response format “1 out of 5” but also if there are cultural differences in this cohesion between Austria and the USA. To investigate this topic 225 Psychology students of the University of Vienna, Austria and 104 Psychology students at the Cypress College, California executed a verbal computer test battery, which consisted out of the FRRT (Family Relations Reasoning Test) with 60 items and the Syllogisms 2009 with 10 items. Unfortunately it turned out that about 50 % of the American data had to be excluded of further analyses due to an extreme answering behaviour (editing times under one minute combined with low raw scores) of the test takers. Because of this fact, no Rasch model analyses of the English items had been feasible and therefore no test of equivalency via Rasch model between the two languages was possible. So, the focus was only put on the Austrian sample which showed significant results: It turned out that the items are significantly easier if they…

These days psychological diagnostics has become essential in various scientific and societal areas. Parallel to its expansion in applications the requirements for psychological diagnostics have increased; on the one hand acting as a basis for objective and valide judgement and on the other hand enabling a timesaving and economical approach. To seriously deliberate these thoughts the aim of this study was to develop a test procedure of the AID 2 (version 2.2) by Kubinger (2009a) for the subtests “social and factual consistency” (“Soziale und Sachliche Folgerichtigkeit“), “discovering synonyms” (“Synonyme finden”) and “abstracting functionalities” (“Funktionen abstrahieren”) applicable on groups. The two last-mentioned subtests have been assessed by testing 679 students in Austria. A likelihood-quotient statistic (Anderson, 1973) with the splitting criteria median, sex and region has been conducted in order to verify the conformance of the item pools with the Rasch model. After the a posteriori elimination of a maximum of two items in the corresponding test versions of the subtests the conformance according to the Rasch model has been accepted. Future research should focus on Rasch model conformance by investigating larger sample sizes as well as the application of LLTM for associated test versions in the corresponding subtests. The potential of setting up binding rules in the phase of item development can have a beneficial influence on semi-automated…

▼ This study empirically compares the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Partial Credit
Model (PCM) of
Rasch focusing on the invariance of item parameters. The invariance concept which is the consequence of the principle of specific objectivity was tested in both CTT and PCM using the results of learners who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Mathematics examinations in 2010. The difficulty levels of the test items were estimated from the independent samples of learn- ers. The same sample of learners used in the calibration of the difficulty levels of the test items in the PCM
model were also used in the calibration of the difficulty levels of the test items in CTT
model. The estimates of the difficulty levels of the test items were done using RUMM2030 in the case of PCM while SAS was used in the case of CTT. RUMM2030 and SAS are both the statistical softwares. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the four different design
groups of test takers. In cases where the ANOVA showed a significant difference between the means of the design groups, the Tukeys groupings was used to establish where the difference came from. The research findings were that the test items' difficulty parameter estimates based on the CTT theoretical framework were not invariant across the different independent sample groups. The over- all findings from this study were that the CTT theoretical framework was unable to produce item difficulty invariant parameter estimates. The PCM estimates were very stable in the sense that for most of the items, there was no significant difference between the means of at least three design groups and the one that deviated from the rest did not deviate that much. The item parameters of the group that was representative of the population (proportional allocation) and the one where the same number of learners (50 learners) was taken from different performance categories did not differ significantly for
all the items except for item 6.6 in examination question paper 2. It is apparent that for the test item parameters to be invariant of the group of test takers in PCM, the group of test takers must be heterogeneous and each performance category needed to be big enough for the proper calibration of item parameters. The higher values of the estimated item parameters in CTT were consistently found in the sample that was dominated by the high proficient learners in Mathematics ("bad") and the lowest values were consistently calculated in the design group that was dominated by the less proficient learners. This phenomenon was not apparent in the
Rasch model.

▼ The Constant Latent Odds Ratios (CLORs)
model is a newly developed
generalization of the
Rasch model with powerful measurement properties. From the
assumptions of the CLORs
model, the property of weak item independence follows.
Weak item independence states that the ordering of the item probabilities is the
same at every level of the total score, a property that only holds for a small
selection of IRT models. By testing for weak item independence, it becomes possible
to see whether applying a CLORs
model instead of e.g. a Birnbaum
model would be
appropriate. To this purpose, a test of weak item independence is proposed that
makes use of Kendall's W as a measure of concordance. The sensitivity of this test
in differentiating between the CLORs
model and the Birnbaum
model is evaluated
through simulation study, and a parametric bootstrap procedure is used to apply
the test to empirical data.

▼ The use of surveys in research involves a number of
carefully weighted considerations that affect quality data and
validity of inferences. Most of these considerations have been
adequately and comprehensively addressed in the literature.
However, the data analysis methodology remained to be
underrepresented. As a result, researchers most commonly rely on
data analyses plans based on the Classical Test Theory (CTT), which
has several methodological shortcomings particularly in situations
where more complex survey instruments are employed and the
individual survey items are intended to represent underlying
latent-class structures. The analytical approaches in these
situations demand the need for more objective measurement theories
and psychometrically defensible mathematical models that allow for
examining explicit relationships between the survey items and the
implied underlying latent-class variables. This investigation fills
in the methodological gap in survey research by demonstrating the
use of the
Rasch models in the analyses of data collected with
complex survey instruments. This research was conducted as a case
study. The data that were analyzed were collected as part of a
large-scale research project launched in 2002 by Chaban and Holland
at the National Center for Research on Europe, University of
Canterbury, New Zealand. The dataset consisted of 10,034 responses
from general publics in 10 countries who completed an on-line
survey, “The EU in the Eyes of Asia Pacific.”The complexity of the
instrument required a conceptual mapping of the survey questions
with the identification of the items that implied latent-class
structures. Once this was achieved, the
Rasch models were used to
analyze and optimize the latent-class constructs and examine their
performance across other respondents’ variables. This methodology
allowed the researcher to establish objective measures of
knowledge, descriptive image and perceptions of the EU as well as
identify areas where the instrument needed
improvement.

▼ This is a quasi-experimental study that aims to examine the interactive effects of web-mediated instructional strategies and learners’ cognitive preferences in their acquisition of introductory programming concepts. The thesis knowledge domain is an introduction to computer programming knowledge, designed for non-computer science students. It is the intention of this study to extend the McKay (2000a) research to examine the interactive effects of web-mediated instructional strategies and cognitive preferences in the acquisition of introductory programming concepts in Malaysian universities. Whereas the instructional strategies investigated by McKay (2000a) were paper-based, they involved graphical metaphors. Instead, this thesis interrogates whether or not information communications technology (ICT) elements such as signals (or cues), interactive animation, navigational tools, words and graphics influence students’ cognitive performance, and whether there are interactive effects of their cognitive preferences that contribute to the results. This study recognises the complex nature of the web-mediated learning environment and the difficulties experienced by students due to their lack of prior programming knowledge, which were first analysed by Bagley (1990) and revised by McKay (2000a). This empirical study examined the performance of novice-learners (or -programmers) with different cognitive preferences using two web-mediated instructional strategies: 1) text-plus-textual format and 2) text-plus-graphical format. The participants were primarily second year undergraduate students, in Malaysia, who are required to enrol in an Introductory Programming course as part of their program requirement for the first time. They were classified for the purpose of this research as novice-learners. The subsequent data collected included scores from three instruments: 1) pre-test; 2) post-test and 3) cognitive styles analysis. The validity and reliability of the cognitive performance measurements (pre- and post-test) were confirmed according to Rasch model using the Quest interactive test analysis system software (Adam & Khoo, 1996). These cognitive performance measurements were found to have strong validity with the item fit statistics produced by the Quest estimate and ranged from 0.81 to 1.22, strongly upholding that the test-items sampled the one construct. Further analyses were conducted, based on effect size (Cohen’s d) to compare the magnitude of difference between groups (Cohen, 1977). The results suggest that there is no clear evidence that a cognitive preference plays an important role in cognitive performance when learning from web-mediated instructional modules. However, it has been observed that the analytic-verbalisers performed better when the instructional format they received suit their cognitive preferences with a medium effect size. As the participants were novice-learners, the influence of prior domain knowledge cannot be ignored. The findings of this doctoral study contribute new knowledge…

▼ There are ever increasing demands placed upon people who are involved in the healthcare sector to keep abreast of the required healthcare knowledge, including: new healthcare interventions; how to use new medical equipment. Mobile healthcare (mHealthcare) training programmes should assist hospital staff in covering these demands. At this point the healthcare training practices in the Jordanian hospital sector is restricted to traditional classroom mode where a facilitator provides and facilitates the instructional training resources. While at the same time, the adoption of mobile information communications technology (ICT) tools are used for the hospital’s communications. Consequently, an investigation of best mHealthcare training practice design in Jordan is warranted. This study investigates hands-on healthcare training experiences through a customised mHealthcare training programme. The participants’ performance was measured to provide the quantitative data for the statistical analysis; while qualitative data was obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with some of the participants, immediately following their mHealthcare training programme. This thesis assists to identify best mHealthcare training applications-design practices and to understand the impact factors (social/cultural and adult learning context) in the use of mHealthcare training programmes, with a view to increasing the adoption of such best practices in Jordan. This healthcare information systems (IS) design-framework, which synthesises human-computer interaction (HCI) paradigms and the social/cultural impact of the mobile application training environments, innovates the design and development of mHealthcare training applications in Jordan. The study was conducted in two Jordanian hospitals by employing the use of a mobile healthcare training module using an iPad that was designed and developed by the researcher. The design was based on sound instructional design principles that involved an appropriate healthcare skill development framework based on patient and family rights issues. This thesis contributes to a new usability heuristic model of mHealthcare training applications that apply the mHealthcare best training practices. The data collection for the pilot study involved: semi-structured interviews; a pre- and post-test questionnaire; the validation study involved a questionnaire; and the main experiment involved: a pre- and post-test questionnaire. The semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed using the NVIVO software programme. The pre- and post-test data were analysed using the Quest interactive test analysis system. The contributions of this study are categorised as follows: improved methods of mHealthcare training performance measurement; identification of best practice in mHealthcare training programmes; a new mHealthcare training design-framework; and an innovative mHealthcare training applications usability heuristic model. Further research is recommended, such as: to investigate…
