Recentemente observou-se experimentalmente, Johnson et al. (2010), que fatias organotípicas corticais de rato são capazes de completar padrões espaço-temporais, após serem treinadas. Embora se especule que mecanismos de plasticidade sináptica e homeostática estejam por trás do fenômeno, ainda não existe nenhuma explicação detalhada sobre o assunto. Com o intuito de propor uma explicação clara e consistente para os mecanismos que permeiam a resposta da rede aos estímulos como um todo, nos propomos a estudar este fenômeno por meio de uma rede de neurônios de integração-e-disparo dotada de mecanismos de homeostase intrínseca e de plasticidade sináptica dependente de disparos. O sistema construído foi explorado, de modo a determinar em que condições a rede poderia comportar-se como o sistema real, e treinado de forma similar `a realizada experimentalmente por Johnson et al. (2010).

Recently it has been observed experimentally, Johnson et al. (2010), that organotypic cortical slices of rat are capable of completing spatio-temporal patterns after training. Although it is speculated that synaptic and homeostatic plasticity may have an important role in this phenomenon, there is still no detailed explanation about this subject. In order to propose a clear and consistent explanation for the mechanisms that underlie the network response to stimuli as a whole, we propose to study this phenomenon through a network of integrate-and-fire neurons endowed with intrinsic homeostasis and spike-timing dependent plasticity mechanisms. The constructed system was explored, aiming to determine in which conditions the network could behave as the real system, and trained in a way similar as the experimental one done by Johnson et al. (2010).

2. Lowcay, Callum William. Structure and randomness in complex networks applied to the target set selection problem.

Advances in technology have enabled the empirical study of large, so-called `complex' networks with tens of thousands to millions of vertices, such as social networks and large communications networks. It has been discovered that these networks share a non-random topology characterised mainly by highly skewed, heavy-tailed degree distributions and small average distances between vertices. The work of this thesis is to attempt to leverage the well-known topological properties of complex networks to efficiently solve difficult NP-complete problems, with the aim of obtaining better or faster solutions than would be possible for general graphs. Two related NP-complete problems are selected for study: the minimum target set problem, and the maximum activation set problem. Both problems relate to finding a `target set' of vertices which is capable of initiating a spreading process (such as the spread of a rumour) that reaches a large proportion of the network. This thesis introduces several novel heuristics for these two problems inspired by the topology of complex networks. It is discovered that in many (but not all) cases it is possible to make relatively small alterations to the network that enable the computation of a considerably smaller target set than would be possible on general graphs. The evaluation of the various heuristics is entirely experimental, which required the development of procedures to generate `random' networks that can be used as experimental controls. This thesis includes a survey of several popular techniques for generating random networks and finds all but one (random rewiring) to be unsuitable as controls. The validity of random rewiring relies on a somewhat obscure theorem. Although a proof of the theorem (essentially an existence proof) is already known, this thesis offers a constructive algorithmic proof. The new proof advances on the old by providing an upper bound on the maximum number of rewiring operations required to transform between networks of the same degree-sequence, whereas an upper bound could not be determined under the old proof.

THE AIM OF THIS PH.D. THESIS IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE THEORY OF STOCHASTIC PROCESSES, FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS AND NUMBER THEORY. THE WHOLE WORK CONTAINS THREE CHAPTERS. IN CHAPTER I WE STUDY THE STOCHASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE SEQUENCE OF DIGITS IN THE ALTERNATING SERIES EXPANSIONS FOR REAL NUMBERS. THESE REPRESENTATIONS ARISE FROM A GENERAL ALGORITHM OF ALTERNATING SERIES EXPANSIONS OF REAL NUMBERS INTRODUCED BY A. AND J. KNOPFMACHER (1989). IN CHAPTER II WE INVESTIGATEA GENERALIZED GAUSS-KUZMIN TYPE PROBLEM, WHICH COMPRISES THE CLASSIC GAUSS'SPROBLEM AS A PARTICULAR CASE. OUR APPROACH TO A GENERALIZATION OF GAUSS'S PROBLEM IN TERMS OF OPERATORS IS BASED ON THE THEORY OF DEPENDENCE WITH COMPLETE CONNECTIONS USING A GENERALIZED GAUSS-KUZMIN OPERATOR INTRODUCED BY W. FLUCH (1987). FINALLY, IN CHAPTER III, WE ESTABLISH A CLASS OF PROBABILITY MEASURES UNDER WHICH RANDOM VARIABLES APPEARING IN G-CONTINUED FRACTION EXPANSIONS ARE IDENTICALLY DISTRIBUTED.
