▼ Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) is a part of an international network organization called Hizb al-Tahrir (HT). The organization is commonly portrayed as an "anti-system" movement that seeks to overthrow democracy and revives the past transnational rule of the khilafah (caliphate). This view is justified by the doctrine of HT that promotes a revolutionary strategy of non-participation and envisages a political change outside the parliamentary process of democracy. Based on this ideology, many see the future of HT in its role of radicalizing Muslims that eventually lead to violence. This study evaluates the consistency of HTI in following its revolutionary strategy of non-participation. It argues that HTI is undertaking a strategic shift from a total non-participation to a selective participation. It establishes a strategic balance between revolution and reform by taking part in the democratic system for stirring opposition toward the existing political system. HTI focuses on challenging the legitimacy of democracy while at the same time engages with the supporting institutions and actors of the democratic system. This strategy resembles the model of political change called by Oxford University's political scientist, Timothy Garton Ash, "refolution." It aims to overthrow the existing political system without overthrowing the political regime. It seeks entry into the system to covert key elements of power holders and to persuade them to undertake a fundamental change from democracy to an Islamic government based on shari'ah law. This change is inevitable for HTI to adjust itself to the democratic context of Indonesia that integrates the majority of Muslims in the democratic system. This presence of Muslim actors in the system has created a perception of political opportunity for Islamization that prevents HTI from confronting the existing political process. This stance betrays HTI's revolutionary doctrine that requires it to uncompromisingly undermine the legitimacy of the democratic system and propagate political detachment. However, HTI understands that opposition to the Muslim involvement in the democratic process can isolate it from its most potential allies. Based on this, this study calls attention to the trajectory of HT outside the box of violent and revolutionary activism. The above path is especially likely for HT that operates in the context of Muslim democracies. HTI offers an alternative strategy to violent activism and the moderate trend of Islamist movements. Evidence shows HTI is building support bases for the establishment of a pro-shari'ah or anti-system politics, either in the form of starting a new party or in creating a coalition between the existing parties. To support this argument, this study analyzes the nature of HTI's activities and its attitude toward the democratic structure. It is primarily based on a content analysis of HTI's discourse and activities recorded in two of its main publications: Al-Islam weekly bulletin and Al-Wa'ie monthly magazine. ▼ The thesis reassesses the presence of French émigrés from the 1848 revolution within a British context. In particular, it investigates their role in the transfer of the wide-ranging and often contradictory wealth of revolutionary concepts and political doctrines among the small but influential coterie of Victorian radicals and journalists who welcomed them and disseminated their ideologies. The part played by the transmission of these ideas within the 'continuity thesis' regarding radicalism in Britain is thus re-examined, challenging the premise that there was a complete political hiatus between the Chartism of the 1840s and the advent of socialism at the end of the nineteenth century. The varied transnational spaces within which revolutionary ideas were exchanged, debated and promoted are explored together with the vectors through which they were transmitted to a British public by figures as diverse as G.J. Harney, Ernest Jones, John Ludlow and Charles Bradlaugh. The thesis shows how these connections stimulated a new political language inspired by different strands of French socialism, secularism, republicanism and Freemasonry, and how this exposed both divisions of class and political direction within British radicalism while paradoxically encouraging a sense of patriotism. The quarante-huitards are here firmly located between the previous French migration to Britain beginning in the 1830s and the subsequent arrival of Communard refugees in 1870- 71, as well as within the wider continental émigré community. Through biography, the backgrounds and lives of certain figures within both groups are traced including Louis Blanc and other 'chiefs' in exile, as well as members whose years in Britain, like that of Jeanne Deroin, have until now been obscured. The impact of influential figures with whom they associated such as Mazzini and Marx are also considered, during a distinct period that was witnessing the decline of Chartism and ushering in a new spirit of commercial liberalism as reflected in the Great Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862.

Existing literature on radicalization leading to violent extremism covers a wide range of issues and areas of concern, including theories and models of radicalization and the radicalization process, as well as triggers, catalysts, and risk factors for the emergence of radicalization. Scholars have identified various risk factors that influence the likelihood of violent radicalization. However, a review of literature on radicalization reveals that there is a lack of thorough analysis of how major risk factors relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between major risk factors for radicalization by combining them in a single model. Three risk factors were selected for this study: perceived Islamophobia, poor integration, and identity crisis. These risk factors are critical for understanding the early stages of the radicalization process of Muslim individuals who live in Western societies. This study utilized a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, employing both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Data was collected using a survey of 180 Turkish-Americans and 118 Turkish-Canadians and interviews with 10 opinion leaders. The researcher proposed four hypotheses to investigate the relationships between the three aforementioned risk factors and used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test these hypotheses. The results showed that both perceived Islamophobia and poor integration were predictors of identity crisis in both samples. No significant relationship was observed between perceived Islamophobia and poor integration. The results also revealed some differences between the two samples. Perceived Islamophobia was significantly higher for the sample of Turkish-Americans. Additionally, higher perceived Islamophobia among Turkish-Americans predicted weaker identification with the host country. On the other hand, stronger religious identification among Turkish-Canadians predicted lower levels of integration. It is necessary to emphasize that this study did not explore whether the participants did or did not adopt radical ideologies. Rather, the researcher focused on the relationships among the risk factors that might make Muslim minorities more vulnerable to radicalization. The study concluded that it is important to take measures to counter Islamophobia and to facilitate the integration of Muslim minorities in order to lessen the likelihood that they will experience an identity crisis.

East Africa and particularly the Swahili coast has been home to Islam religion since the 1900s, where followers have practiced the moderate Sufi form of Islam. The past two decades have however witnessed the infiltration of radical forms of Islam in the region. Despite the growth of radical political activism in the Swahili coast, available research has failed to examine the factors that contribute towards its rise. Historically, Islam has played a significant role in Swahili coast’s politics and is often drawn upon to provide basis to argue for political and social reforms in a region that perceives itself as largely marginalized by the successive Kenyan Christian governments. Irrespective of their grievances and goals, radical Islamist groups are causing great concern to the government as they cause political instability, they disrupt social harmony, they hamper economic development, endanger regime survival and most of all threaten national security in their wake. Direct economic costs as a result of the security threat in the country include the destruction and degradation of physical capital and infrastructure, lost employment opportunities, and capital flight. Indirect costs include weakened institutions and a fragmented social fabric. This study therefore seeks to examine and understand the factors that contribute to the rise of Islamic radicalism in the target region, It seeks to examine the ideological conditions that facilitate the growth of radical Islamism in the Swahili coast; the internal and external factors that facilitate the rise of radical Islamism at the Kenyan Swahili coast; and examine the threats of terrorism to Kenya. Understanding the motivating factors for Islamic radicalism can help governments and policy makers devise appropriate response mechanisms to alleviate the problem. The study was restricted to the Coastal region of Kenya where the researcher collected both secondary data from published materials, journals, academic papers and periodicals on Islamic activities at the Swahili coast and primary qualitative data through semi-structured interviews. The researcher used snowball and purposive sampling approach where the researcher requested a few interviewees to recommend other people to be interviewed that they already know and that have a higher chance of adding value to the research study. This method relies on the interviewee’s understanding and general knowledge of area of study, their availability, and their desire to participate in the entire study.1 The findings supports the root cause model that radicalization arises from external level factors, internal social causes, and individual…

À la fin du XXème siècle, un conflit armé éclata au Pérou dont les facteurs déclanchants sont encore matière à discussion aujourd’hui. C’est la ville andine d’Ayacucho qui se retrouva au coeur du conflit et l’université publique de cette región du Pérou fut mélée au conflit dans la mesure où quantité de ceux qui faisaient partie de Sentier Lumineux étaient liés à des activités d’enseignement. Ce dernier élément conduisit les spécialistes de l’étude du phénomène subversif à rechercher les racines intellectuelles du groupe qui cherchait à prendre le pouvoir par la violence. L’approche principale adoptée par les spécialistes à cet égard est que le radicalisme du groupe armé répond à une caractéristique des groupes d’intellectuels des provinces ou des régions des hauts plateaux péruviens insatisfaits de l’État péruvien et réticents aux changements tels que l’impact de la modernisation dans ces espaces au début du siècle dernier. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous proposons au contraire que, durant la première moitié du siècle, les intellectuels de provinces comme celle d’Ayacucho, loin d’être des radicaux, cherchaient à résoudre les problèmes typiques d’un pays centralisé et doté d’une élite hégémonique située à Lima, la capitale du pays, qui considérait les provinces comme des espaces perdus dans le temps et incapables de faire face à la modernisation et à la modernité. Les tensions et les conflits avec la capitale ont façonné leurs relations culturelles ainsi que les représentations autour de l'État central et des provinces de l'intérieur du pays. L’histoire culturelle d’Ayacucho ne peut se séparer de la façon dont ces groupes d’intellectuels construisirent des représentations autour de la nation, de la región et du mode de vie en province. Cette Histoire Culturelle s'exprime dans la manière dont l'anthropologie des provinces ou des régions telles qu'Ayacucho et Cusco a permis de réfléchir et de résoudre le problème des visions hégémoniques au Pérou. La thèse n’aborde pas directement l'étude de la lutte armée, mais traite de la construction de représentations autour des traditions intellectuelles sur le radicalisme et le régionalisme dans le pays.

At the end of the 20th century, an armed conflict took place in Peru whose origins and factors that triggered it continue to be discussed even today. This conflict, with the epicenter in the Andean city of Ayacucho, compromised the public university in that region of Peru and the center of education in general since a good part of those who formed part of the subversive group, the Shining Path, were people linked to educational activities. ▼ Why do some Muslim leaders radicalize while others do not? Drawing on a study of radical mobilization in Indonesia, this dissertation argues that Muslim leaders radicalize when they find religious authority hard to gain and maintain. It makes two specific points: 1) radical mobilization is more likely among weak and precarious religious leaders, those with few followers and little institutionalization; and, 2) weak and precarious leaders are more likely to radicalize in crowded and competitive religious markets, because they need to be creative if they want to survive. It argues that weak Muslim leaders, in competitive environment, are the ones most likely to use strategies of outbidding, scapegoating, and provocation. The dis-sertation’s empirical puzzle is the cross-regional variations in Islamist mobilization observed in post-transition Java, Indonesia. Since 1999, radical groups have proliferated and mobi-lized more in some regions than others. The study finds that in regions with radical groups and mobilization, most clerics have weak religious institutions, fragmented networks, and operate in competitive religious markets. In these markets, radical mobilization provides low-status clerics with a cheap and efficient way to bolster their religious authority. In re-gions where radical groups did not proliferate, most clerics have strong religious institutions with deep roots in society, extensive networks, and operate in much less competitive reli-gious environments. In these markets, clerics do not feel the same urge to mobilize, as reli-gious authority is more secure, stable, and routinized. The origins of these religious markets are traced back to sub-regional variations in the process of state building. State building strategies had long-lasting consequences on contemporary Muslim institutions by shaping subsequent political cleavages and state policies toward Islam. This dissertation is based on 13 months of fieldwork in Indonesia, 126 interviews with Muslim clerics and activists, and a new dataset of Java’s 15,000 Islamic boarding schools and their 30,000 Muslim clerics. My dissertation is both a study of black radicalism and implicit bias in twentieth century African American literature, as well as a gesture towards new ways of studying and teaching black radicalism and African American literature in the academy at large. Historically, African American literature has been unduly cast as being inextricably bound with linear historical periods of racial struggle and progress in America. Using what I define as a black radical criticism, I close-read the work of black experimental writers across eight decades, arguing for the opening of inquiry (where finite determinations have previously been set in place) across traditional boundaries of literary periodization - outside of time - seeking a study of the trajectory of black radical expression across socio-historical moments (as opposed to continuing to assess African American authorial legacies based on their previous placements within historical literary movements). Baraka serves as a central figure of inquiry in this project because of his historical positioning between three large literary movements – New Negro, Black Arts, and Black Feminism. Because Baraka has such a large presence inside and outside of the academy, as well as a wealth of documented writing and self-revision, he functions as an easily accessible site of deconstructable radicalism - one providing a clear detailing of difference in the ways in which his legacy has been crafted versus the ways in which Baraka himself has worked to craft. Placing Baraka’s work in conversation with nineteenth and twentieth century theorists, the work of Langston Hughes, Toni Cade Bambara’s The Salt Eaters, and Renee Gladman’s The Activist, I discuss racism and bias, historical memory, modes of self-construction and the ways each are represented and interrogated by these authors. I use those interrogations to further explore the existence of implicit bias within the construction of African American literature canons and the affect those biases have on the teaching, and cultural remembrance, of African American authors.

▼ This thesis is a study of a recurring figure or trope of post-war British school stories wherein a ‘radical’ character enters a school or classroom setting to introduce an alternative concept of learning or education. The radical may be a teacher or a student. Teacher types include the tyrannical pedagogue; the ostentatious but ultimately self-serving teacher-sophist; the charismatic, benevolent Master; and the predatory teacher. Representations of the pupil include the loving disciple; the disloyal pupil; the autodidact; and the student-creator whose steals the Master’s knowledge and runs, fashioning new worlds from it. While these types vary from story to story, all modern classroom radicals challenge the way teaching and learning are practised in their educational institutions. In doing so, they reflect on the purpose of schools and the political ambitions behind knowledge construction. The post-war British school story classroom radical asks perennial questions about the modern site of pedagogy. What gives one the right to teach? Why must one be taught? What is true teaching? How should one educate and to what end? This thesis begins with a historical overview of British school story fiction, and argues that this flamboyant school-story character emerges from the debris of World War Two. My thesis moves on to focus on eight key novels, plays and autobiographies: Lord of the Flies (William Golding, 1954), To Sir, With Love (E.R. Braithwaite, 1959), Forty Years On (Alan Bennett, 1968), Black Teacher (Beryl Gilroy, 1976), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Muriel Spark, 1981), Another Country (Julian Mitchell, 1981), The History Boys (Alan Bennett, 2004) and Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro, 2005). Chapter One focuses on radical dissent in the 1930s classroom, using Spark’s and Mitchell’s retrospective accounts. Chapter Two considers black teacher radicalism from the late 1950s to the 70s, using Braithwaite’s To Sir, With Love and Gilroy’s Black Teacher. Chapter Three takes the reader up to the 1980s, analysing the containment of radicalism in the figure of Alan Bennett and his work. Chapter Four discusses the limitations of classroom radicalism and the future of the school story radical in contemporary fiction, by examining the earliest and latest of the school stories selected for attention, Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) and Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005). In the former radicalism is punished but idealised. The latter imagines a future of such a level of institutionalisation that radicalism in the classroom or elsewhere will have been rendered simply unthinkable. This thesis demonstrates that the radical in the classroom narrative trope is always didactic. Whether or not one is encouraged to agree with the radical, the implicit role of the radical character in the British school story is to educate the reader to think critically about the world and their place within it. ▼ In this thesis, I examine the radical political views and activism of Thomas Beddoes, a late eighteenth century chemist and physician. A multifaceted man, Beddoes corresponded with many of Britain’s leading industrial and intellectual lights, especially members of the Lunar Society, had a brief career as an Oxford lecturer, devised air delivery apparatus with James Watt, and wrote extensively to distribute useful medical knowledge to the public and argue for medical reform, all the while attracting the ire of the government and scientific community for his outspoken, radical, republican politics. I track Beddoes’ career as a Friend of Liberty, set within the context of the British reform movement, from 1792, when he began involving himself publicly in agitation, to 1797, when the death-knell of the British reform movement sounded and the French Revolution seemed to have utterly failed. In doing so, I seek to determine to what extent Beddoes was a radical, a revolutionary, and a fifth-column threat to the British, whether or not his ideology was in any regard the product of his science, and what the nature of his radicalism and the lineage of his ideas can tell us about the intellectual culture of his era. I conclude that Beddoes’ fiery rhetoric belies an otherwise moderate and pacific approach to political change, based in British Enlightenment ideas rather than emerging science. The republic, rather than a goal to be achieved through violent overthrow, was simply the only logical organization for a society of innately equal citizens, a fact he believed obvious to the enlightened mind. He defended the French Revolution while he could still cast it as a moderate endeavor led by rational men, but, like so many of its early British supporters, grew disillusioned as France descended into mob violence and the tyranny of Robespierre. Following the Priestley Riots of 1791, he harboured deep fears of a sans-culotte-like British mob, which threatened not only the Church and King, but the interests and liberty of those men like Joseph Priestley and James Watt who were generating valuable knowledge and industry around him. My analysis supports Roy Porter’s theory of a unique British Enlightenment, a social fermentation which emphasized Lockean personal liberty, improvement, and private property (which evolved into the laissez-faire economics of Adam Smith and David Hume), and which was, critically, defensive of liberties already gained. Beddoes’ constellation of political, religious, scientific, and economic influences reflect the characteristic Englishness of the enlightenment culture around him, distinct particularly from France, and helps illustrate the links between scientific and political ideas in the late Enlightenment.
