▼ T-joints are common in beam-column connections of steel frames, vierendeel girders and at mid-span of N-trusses. Strengthening the members of these structures increases the demand on the joints, which may require joint strengthening. This thesis examines different strengthening techniques of T-joints of RHS members. In Phase I, the effectiveness of through-wall steel bolts is examined. This is accomplished by controlling the web outward buckling of the chord under the brace axial load. The study examined the effect of the number and pattern of bolts, as well as the web height-to-wall thickness (h/t) ratio of the chord, on strengthening effectiveness. Rectangular 203x76x(3.09, 4.5, and 5.92) mm chord members were tested. The 8 mm diameter steel bolts varied from a single bolt to 15 bolts of various distributions. The joint strength increased by 3.1%, 6.2%, and 29% for chords with (h/t) of 34, 45, and 65, respectively. The number and distribution of bolts had little effect on their effectiveness.
In Phase II, similar T-joint specimens were strengthened using adhesively bonded GFRP plates, 9.5 mm thick, of different configurations, and 2 mm thick high-modulus CFRP plates of equivalent stiffness. It was shown that strength gain increases significantly, from 9% to 38%, as (h/t) ratio of the HSS chord increases from 34 to 65. In thin-walled HSS (h/t = 65), retrofitting provided significant gains in strength but not in ductility. In thick-walled HSS (h/t = 34), retrofitting provided little strength gain, but enhanced ductility, especially with properly bonded plates extending on the brace. Generally, plates fractured under local bending or delaminated within plate layers while bond was fully intact.
In Phase III, selected configurations of the two retrofitting methods were used in additional T-joints with chord (h/t) ratio of 65, to study their effectiveness in presence of axial compression load in the chord. Two sustained load levels were induced in the chord, representing 45% and 80% of its full axial capacity. The transverse brace load was then gradually increased to failure. The through-wall steel bolts increased the joint capacity by 13% to 25%, depending on the chord’s axial load level, while the bonded GFRP plate increased the capacity by 38 to 46%.

▼ Existing power management systems are hard-wired, slow, unreliable and insecure. By improving the communication framework for power management systems, using Internet and modern communication protocols like IEC61850, Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4), etc., not only can energy be managed better, but also, the system as a whole can be made faster, secure and reliable. Any communication network has certain important characteristics like delay, range, scalability, network topology, etc., that dictate its effectiveness and usefulness in a particular environment. Delays in various parts of the network is one of the important characteristics that needs to be studied carefully. Network delays can be reduced by not only faster hardware but also better software. Importance also needs to be placed on monitoring power consumption of the devices, and ways to improve power efficiency of the system.
In conjunction with that, a first generation communication framework for renewable energy distribution and management system, was set up using a network of embedded boards and personal computers. Various communication protocols and interfaces were tried to prove the versatility and reliability of the entire system. Experiments were conducted to test the range and delays in various parts of the communication network. Having established a platform for the nodes to communicate, investigation was done to implement techniques that could make the nodes more power efficient. One of the ways to stretch the battery life is through addition of an SMPS. However, addition of an SMPS introduces power instability to the system and interferes with normal functioning of sensitive devices like ADC, compass, etc. A processor controlled SMPS was added to the communication platform and its interference with normal functioning of the system was studied. Possible hardware and software approaches to counter this interference are also presented.

▼ An experimental program was developed to test various unreinforced RHS-to-RHS 90° T-connections subject to branch in-plane bending moment with the objective of determining the effectiveness of the welded joint. Twelve unique test specimens were designed to be weld-critical and the results from the full-scale tests revealed that the current equation for the effective elastic section modulus for in-plane bending, S_ip, given in Table K4.1 of ANSI/AISC 360 (2010) is conservative. A modification to the current requirements that limit the effective width of the transverse weld elements is proposed, resulting in a safe and more economical weld design method for RHS-to-RHS T-, Y- and X- connections subject to branch axial load or bending moment. It is also concluded that the fillet weld directional strength enhancement factor, (1.00 + 0.50sin1.5Ө), should not be used for strength calculations of welded joints to square and rectangular hollow structural sections.

With the need to find new alternatives, rainwater harvesting should be seen as an important strategy for better management of water resources, once it constitutes a free source of potable water.
Rainwater harvesting systems, which already have a global implementation, are a recognised way for urban buildings to reduce their reliance on the public mains supply. Its applications are predominantly non-potable, namely toilet flushing and gardening.
The aim of this report is to produce a comprehensive assessment of rainwater harvesting and its potential use all over the world, as well as the potential economical and environmental benefits. It is provided a description of all the rainwater harvesting system components, as well as water quality requirements according to the water final purpose.
A case study is presented, which main object is to evaluate the feasibility of rainwater harvesting for gardening, applied to the University Campus of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Universidade Nova, Lisbon (FCT/UNL). A detailed characterization of the existing irrigation system on campus is provided, as well as its potential ability to collect rainwater. According to the supply and demand balance, several scenarios are presented in order to provide the necessary information for the decision-makers to evaluate the best solution for the desired application. For such, all the available information was analyzed, in order to determine the environmental, technical and economical viability of the project.

RHS (River Habitat Survey).

▼ Multi-scale problems in numerical electromagnetics are becoming increasingly common with the advent and widespread usage of compact mobile phones, body area networks, small and nano antennas, sensors, high-speed interconnects, integrated circuits and complex electronic packaging structures, to name just a few commercial applications. Numerical electromagnetic modeling and simulation of structures with multi-scale features is highly challenging due to the fact that electrically small as well as large features are simultaneously present in the model which demands for discretization of the computational domain such that the number of degrees of freedom is very large, thus, levying a heavy burden on computational resources. The multi-scale nature of a given problem also exacerbates the challenge of generating very fine meshes which do not introduce instabilities or ill-conditioned behaviors.
In this work we introduce a hybrid technique, which combines frequency domain and time domain techniques in a manner such that the fine features (electrically small) of the object being modeled are handled by the Method of Moments (MoM) technique while the electrically large parts of the structure are dealt with by using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) technique in order to reduce the computational burden. Recently, structures with multi-scale features have been simulated by using the dipole moment (DM) approach combined with the FDTD technique to handle fine features in a multi-scale geometry. However, when the size of the scatterer becomes larger in terms of the wavelength and the quasi-static assumption becomes invalid, extensive modifications of the DM/FDTD hybrid approach are needed resulting in a high computational cost.
The research proposes a novel hybrid FDTD technique, which combines the Method of Moments and the Finite-Difference Time-Domain techniques directly in the time domain circumventing the need to carry out frequency transform calculations as required in the DM approach when the object size is not small (size>λ/20). The proposed technique utilizes piecewise sinusoidal basis functions to represent the currents on arbitrarily shaped wires with fine features, and modified RWG basis function for surfaces. The fields scattered by the object with fine features in MoM region are computed in the time domain on a planar interface. The time domain fields obtained at the planar interface are then combined with the FDTD update equations. In contrast to the existing techniques used to handle this type of problems, the proposed technique is both efficient as well as stable.

▼ The thesis is intended to be part of a larger process and field, by helping to increase understanding of how changed colour characteristics in urban green spaces can influence human experiences. More specifically, the thesis explores whether human colour perception is influenced by factors such as viewing distance, seasons, species mixture, or colourful artefacts incorporated in urban green spaces.
In situ studies were performed in southern Sweden, using public parks and welldefined forest stands as experimental areas. Three empirical studies were conducted in the form of quasi-experiments and combined studies involving colour perception and environmental assessment methods. The main findings are structured around Johannes Itten’s colour contrast concepts from the 1960s (Itten, 2002), Berlyne’s arousal model (1971) and the concept of hedonic values. The main results are discussed in terms of the effect of viewing distances on colour perception and the effect of colour contrast on visitor experience. In addition, the findings are related to methodological considerations and constraints, with a discussion of a quantitative approach concerning determination of colours and the use of expert respondents.
In today’s urban green spaces, bright and intense colourful artefacts are increasingly playing a role as visual contributors. According to the results, the coloured additions in green-dominated areas seem to affect human colour perception when viewed from both a short distance (3 metres) and a longer distance (15 metres) in a public park. These findings might also apply to colourful plantations in park environments like perennialand annual borders. The results also indicate that human experiences relate to perceived colour characteristics, which in turn relate to surrounding environmental colours and viewing distance. The findings emphasise that awareness of colour aspects, such as perceived colour contrasts and the effect of viewing distance on perceived colours and related human experiences, should be addressed in the planning and design of urban environment processes. The knowledge from this thesis could support landscape and garden designers in their work to develop outdoor environments that are attractive for humans.

The publication of the Water Framework Directive and the consequent need to characterize and classify water bodies led to the development of specific methodologies for that purpose. In the United Kingdom, the River Habitat Survey (RHS) was developed to support the river classification. Thereafter, this methodology was tested in several European countries and is currently being adopted at national level. The applicability of the RHS in the Azores was tested, by conducting transects in nine rivers from the island of Sao Miguel. In those transects, about 81% of the features from the RHS form were observed. Using observations other than the transepts, there were identified another 11% of the RHS features, achieving 92% of the form for the regional rivers. Among the quality indexes applied to the RHS methodology, the Human Modification score was effective in distinguishing the watercourses tested, while the Habitat Quality Assessment is not appropriate as an index of ecological quality for the Azores. In general, it is concluded that the RHS is applicable to rivers in the Azores, although it was suggested the inclusion of some specific features absent in the 2003 version of the RHS form.

▼ The accuracy of the model used for prediction in Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) is one of the main factors affecting the closed loop performance. Since it is impossible to formulate a perfect model for a real process, there are always differences between the responses predicted by the model and the responses observed from the process. Hence, robustness to model error is an essential property that the controller must have to be adopted in industrial applications. Propagating the uncertainty in the model onto the variables used by the controller is one the key challenges for efficient implementation of a robust controller. Uncertainty propagation approaches such as Monte Carlo simulations and the Polynomial Chaos Expansions (PCE) has been found to suffer from exponentially increasing computational effort with the number of uncertain parameters. Accordingly, the main goal of this thesis is to develop a novel formulation of NMPC based on an uncertainty propagation approach that is more computationally efficient as compared to previously reported approaches. The proposed robust controller in this thesis is specifically targeted to biosystems that are modeled by Dynamic Metabolic Flux models. These models that are becoming increasingly popular for modelling bioprocesses are based on the premise that microorganisms have learned through natural evolution to optimally allocate their resources (nutrients) to maximize a biological objective such as growth or ATP production. Accordingly, these flux models are formulated by LP (Linear Programming) optimizations with constraints that are solved at each time interval and then can be used in conjunction with mass balances to predict the dynamic evolution of different metabolites. The uncertainty in these models is associated to inaccuracies of model parameters involved in the constraints. Thus, although the problem can be solved for particular model parameters by an LP, in the presence of uncertainty the problem becomes nonlinear since different active sets of constraints may become active for parameters’ values within their possible range of variation. Accordingly, the solution space of this nonlinear system can be divided into a set of polyhedrons where each point corresponds to a particular set of parameters within their range of uncertainty. The solution space is often referred in the thesis as the RHS (Right Hand Side) space since it is defined by the variations in the RHS of the constraints with respect to the uncertain parameters. To identify these polyhedrons a dividing procedure has been developed. Since all the polyhedrons can be proven to be convex cones based on a standard simplex form of LP, this dividing method is referred to as the Convex Cone Method (CCM). The regions found by the CCM method are then compared to regions calculated with 100 Percent Rule where the latter has been often used to find a region of existence of a particular tableau in the Simplex method. From this comparison it is found that the CCM can both identify all the possible tableaus…

É um estudo puramente exploratório, qualitativo, enquadrado num paradigma compreensivo - indutivo cujas evidências dão origem a um referencial de inovação na formação; ABSTRACT:The key to the success of an organization it’s not in their capabilities in managing tangible goods, but rather to mobilize and take advantage of its intangible assets. It is therefore essential in a society characterized by volatility of information, in which the pace of life is increasingly accelerated and knowledge is one of the main factors of competitiveness, to invest in people and in their intellectual capital. But for this to become an added value you must share it through networks in increasingly collaborative environments.
Virtual learning environments in e-learning format may be very interesting solutions capable of empower this sharing, to establish and develop an organization intellectual capital.
This thesis seeks to know whether there are actual organizational conditions for the implementation of a blended learning model using an e-learning platform, allowing the needs for continuing training of health professionals of a private hospital. To respond to this issue we study the internal and external environment in which it is inserted.
Initially, we examine the starting conditions giving emphasis to the perception of top management in decision-making: changing the current training model for an innovative format of blended learning. A second phase consolidates previous analysis observing other indicators and draws the model itself.

▼ Traditionally, joints are assumed to be either pinned or fully rigid, but in reality, many behave between these two extremes giving them a semi-rigid classification. By acknowledging the semi-rigidity of nominal pin joints, steel frames can be designed as semi-continuous in which the beam bending moments are partially transmitted to the column members and the need for lateral bracing is eliminated, thus reducing material and construction costs. This thesis presents the results of numerical and theoretical studies of the behaviour of bolted endplate connections to Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) columns using flowdrill bolts and their applications in semi-continuous frame design. Such connections exhibit significant levels of initial stiffness, strength, and deformation capacity while being more cost-effective than fully welded connections. Despite this, there is limited theoretical work carried out that allows such connections to be designed using analytical methods. In addition, there are no standardised connection design tables like that for open section columns (SCI, 1995), thereby inhibiting their adoption in practice. In this thesis, newly derived equations for initial stiffness that have a greatly improved range of validity and accuracy over existing equations are presented. Equations for bending strength of a newly derived elliptical mechanism based on yield line theory and for membrane action based on internal work principles are given. Equations for flowdrill thread stripping due to gross deformation of the RHS face are also presented thus allowing prediction of all common RHS face failure mechanisms. Equations for deformation capacity are derived thus making it possible to predict the full load-deflection behaviour of the RHS face in tension component. When combined with existing equations for bolt and endplate components, it is possible to predict the full moment-rotation behaviour of bolted endplate connections to RHS columns. Extensive parametric studies using finite element analysis (FEA) as well as validation against existing tests show that the newly derived equations can accurately predict the component-level and whole joint behaviour for a wide range of configurations. Taking advantage of the initial stiffness properties that these connections offer, a parametric study is conducted to show that connections with relatively simple detailing can offer sufficient initial stiffness and strength to enable unbraced semi-continuous design of low-rise steel frames. A hand calculation method for SLS sway in semi-continuous frames is also presented thus allowing the designer to readily carry out scheme designs without advanced software knowledge. A systematic method for the detailing of these connections for use in unbraced frame design is presented to facilitate adoption in practice.

▼ Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an important foodborne pathogen, notorious for its low
infectious dose and its capacity to cause severe diseases such as hemorrhagic colitis and
hemolytic uremic syndrome. Molecular subtyping methods are powerful tools for
microbial source tracking during outbreaks. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis is currently
the “gold standard” molecular method for subtyping E. coli O157:H7, however, a
sequence-based scheme such as multilocus sequence typing would provide a less
ambiguous and more rapid, cost-effective, and portable method. Previous publications
reported that the genomes of E. coli O157:H7 contain genes that are highly conserved
between strains. This hindered the development of an effective MLST scheme for
subtyping E. coli O157:H7. In this study, several
rhs genes were targeted, which were
recently shown to be under the strongest positive selection of genes encoded within the E.
coli genome. Eighteen E. coli O157:H7 strains from Lineage I and II, and 15 E. coli
O157:H7 strains from 8 clades were included. Examination of these
rhs genes revealed
44 polymorphic loci (PL) and 10 sequence types (STs) among the 18 lineage-strains, and
280 PL and 12 STs among the 15 clade-strains. Phylogenetic analysis using
rhs genes
generally agreed with the Lineage I and II classification defined previously. This study
also showed E. coli O157:H7 strains from Clade 8 fall into Lineage I/II. Additionally,
unique markers were found in rhsA and rhsJ that might be used to define Clade 8 and
Clade 6. Therefore,
rhs genes may be useful in discriminating strains and determining
the phylogeny of E. coli O157:H7.

▼ The aim of this thesis is to assess the suitability of cold-formed rectangular hollow sections (RHS) for plastic design. The project involved an extensive range of tests on cold-formed Grade C350 and Grade C450 (DuraGal) RHS beams, joints and frames. A large number of finite element analyses was also carried out on models of RHS beams. The conclusion is that cold- formed RHS can be used in plastic design, but stricter element slenderness (b/t) limits and consideration of the connections, are required. Further research, particularly into the effect of axial compression on element slenderness limits, is required before changes to current design rules can be finalised. Bending tests were performed on cold-formed RHS to examine the web and flange slenderness required to maintain the plastic moment for a large enough rotation suitable for plastic design. The major conclusions of the beam tests were: (i) Some sections which are classified as Compact or Class 1 by current steel design specifications do not maintain plastic rotations considered sufficient for plastic design. (ii) The current design philosophy, in which flange and web slenderness limits are independent, is inappropriate. An interaction formula is required, and simple formulations are proposed for RHS. Connection tests were performed on various types of knee joints in RHS, suitable for the column - rafter connection in a portal frame. The connection types investigated were welded stiffened and unstiffened rigid knee connections, bolted plate knee joints, and welded and bolted internal sleeve knee joints, for use in RHS portal frames. The ability of the connections to act as plastic hinges in a portal frame was investigated. The most important finding of the joint tests was the unexpected fracture of the cold-formed welded connections under opening moment before significant plastic rotations occurred. The use of an internal sleeve moved the plastic hinge in the connection away from the connection centre- line thus eliminating the need for the weld between the RHS, or the RHS and the stiffening plate, to carry the majority of the load. The internal sleeve connections were capable of sustaining the plastic moment for large rotations considered suitable for plastic design. Tests on pinned-base portal frames were also performed. There were three separate tests, with two different ratios of vertical to horizontal point loads, simulating gravity and horizontal wind loads. Two grades of steel were used for comparison. The aims of the tests were to examine if a plastic collapse mechanism could form in a cold-formed RHS frame, and to investigate if plastic design was suitable for such frames. In each frame, two regions of highly concentrated curvature were observed before the onset of local buckling, which indicated the formation of plastic hinges and a plastic collapse mechanism. An advanced plastic zone structural analysis which accounted for second order effects, material non-linearity and…
