Through the literature, it is identify, areas and subjects that allow the analyses of institutional management R&D projects (IMRDP). The history of the two institutes was study to identify the similarity and the differences of them. The field research is composed by an interview which was framed through literature subjects and documents in the following topics: general vision and IMRDP operations in the institutes; institutional management; process effectives results; peoples communication involved with projects and the institution; experiences acquired in the institutions. Of all interviews, one quarter was directed to high management, one quarter to functional gerency and two quarter to project managers. The discussion results, thanks to the methodology and schedule, determined that institutions did not have IMRDP, although both institutions considered the importance of its implementation. It was clear that the IMRDP structure, in any institution, have to consider the institutional culture, history, staff, structure and market, even though there are…

▼ Toady, the rapid changes in business environment of shortened product life cycles and advanced technology, drew the attention upon research and developmentâs (
R&
D) contribution to competitive advantage. As a result, valuing the performance of
R&
D has become exceedingly important. This study established a general framework of
R&
D performance measurements by reviewing and organizing literatures and researches on
R&
D performance, along with giving an insight on what are the most valued measurements with applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method.
The questionnaire which developed from AHP was filled by senior managers of
R&
D. Valuing from industry and
R&
D function perspective, we had the results of four similar core
R&
D performance measurements of Customer Satisfaction, Technology commercialized, Market Share, and Technical achievement. However, the individual ranking from these perspectives, are quite different. In the sense of high-technology and traditional industry, having the same top five measurements of Customer Satisfaction, Market Share, Technical achievement, Technology commercialized, and Profitability, the ranking for each industry is differ. As for new product development (NPD) and process improving function, having the same four out of five core
R&
D performance measurements of Customer Satisfaction, Market Share, Access to New Market, and Technology commercialized, the ranking for each function is differ.
The results for priorities and weights of each
R&
D performance measurements, are not only giving an insight on the most preferred measurements, but also when coming for measuring performance, the weights upon the measurements should be considered for more accuracy in performance evaluation. Also the indifference of core measurements for differ industries or
R&
D functions, which indicates when establishing performance measurement in practice, there can be same measurements; however there should be different ways upon valuing, since the priority for them are different.

▼ If the market of military procurement conforms to the double auction (Chatterjee and Samuelson, 1983), the government and the manufacturer can try to reach a binding agreement and maximize the monopoly profit. When they both comply with the agreement, the game constitutes a cooperative game. The government and the firm can extend the periods of the game from one to two through signing the research and development contract. When they carry out the research and development contract in the second phase, the trading probability in the first phase that is double auction model will rise.
However the
R&
D contract causes an increase of transaction probability, the market offers an opportunity let the ineligible manufacturer participate in the defense procurement. We can find the trade-off relationship between the advancement of trading probability and the appearances of unqualified firm. The result is consistent with Inefficiency theorem that an incentive-compatible mechanism which is ex post efficient will not be individual theorem.

▼ This thesis centres around the issue of R&D, investment and growth: it is mainly concerned with the rationale which shapes the optimal investment pattern defined by a firm over time in a growing economy. We start considering the economy as a whole in order to evaluate how its actual functioning (interaction between research labs, risk of failure in innovating, patent laws and so on) shapes firms' specific investment policies. More precisely, we focus on the R&D process as it really develops in the market, and examine what is the optimal investment policy for firms involved in research and whether the selected investment policy in turn sustains the growth path of the economy. After analysing how the economic environment may affect firms' investment plans, we propose to identify the decision mechanism, as it develops inside the firm, through which an investment policy is defined over time. Thus, we move to an in-depth analysis of the process through which a profit-maximizing entity selects a specific investment policy when it is required to expand its production plant in order to satisfy a growing economy.

▼ In this thesis we examine the effects of investment in
knowledge and knowledge spillovers on the evolution of firms’
productivity using micro panel data from Census of Manufacturing of
Korea between 1991 and 1999. We analyze these knowledge spillovers
that may be facilitated by physical proximity as well. The first
chapter focuses on a firm’s discrete decision to participate in two
activities, exporting and R&D investment, which are believed to
impact on its future productivity and survival. The second chapter
examines the spillover effect of knowledge accumulation by
assessing the impact of geographical proximity among firms on their
productivity.

I estimate the optimal capital structure for a growth company, for which market value is
dictated by its highly volatile nature. I study the welfare impact of corporate taxes,
analyzing their economic effect of inducing higher bankruptcy levels. Assuming that
management always seeks to optimize the market value of company’s assets, I find a
significant loss of value that varies negatively with volatility. Flow and stock insolvency are
important for the maximization of capital structure, and I compare both, modeling the
value of the company as an option on its revenues. These are not only highly significant for
R&D and startup companies but also have significant welfare consequences. I compare the
options of liquidation and re-financing and find a clearly important role of early liquidation
for R&D frameworks. I complement the study with a comparative statics analysis
estimating the impact of risk to the value of the firm and the optimal capital structure
decision, for a cross-section of firms. The results present quantitative evidence that
reinforce the literature of trade-off and capital structure applied to growth companies.

Nowadays, the knowledge, the technique and the innovation have become critical factors for the development of competitive advantages. The technological factor, with its rapid rate of propagation and obsolescence, represents a challenge for the management of firms. In this context, firms must be aware of the global technological environment, its changes and tendencies, innovations regarding the development of products and also the impacts of those in the firmsb́usiness. At the same time, with the internationalization firms become capable to develop, manufacture and commercialize in different locations increasing the complexity of management. So, the global development of products becomes a key-factor for the success of the organizational strategy, because it has become crucial to coordinate the global technological advancements to the marketsńeeds. All these changes lead multinationals, including the Brazilian ones, to extend its technological borders to global research, and to develop products and processes for local and global markets. Researching the process of product development, this dissertation presents a multiple case study of internationalization of the product development on Brazilian multinationals, aiming to answer the following question: how did the process of internationalization of firms motivate the internationalization of the product development? The…

Nowadays, the concept of knowledge economy comes from the acknowledgement of the importance of knowledge for economic growth (Soete, 2000).
Actually, the important developments in the economy, which is an informational, global and network economy (Castells, 2005), changed the way in which companies organize their innovative capacity (Cantwell e Narula, 2001).
As a matter of fact, we witness a tendency for the internationalization of strategic functions, like R&D, which seems to be associated with the capacity of subsidiaries to generate innovative processes and products (Dunning, 2000; Cantwell e Mudambi, 2005).
The goal of this dissertation is to understand the logics of a multinational network, in what concerns the strategies of R&D delocalization to other subsidiaries, focusing on two main concepts: the subsidiaries’ autonomy and the knowledge transference.
In this manner, we used the method of case study and mainly the technique of interview and we focused the research in two subsidiaries (in Portugal and in Netherlands) and in the headquarters (in Norway).
This is a small multinational company of the electronic industry, but has subsidiaries in several countries and has a history and a trajectory very peculiar.
Concerning the organizational structure, this multinational company has characteristics of a…

▼ According to the Globalizations Council the most important task Sweden has is to assess the opportunities and challenges presented by the global economy to a small, open country like Sweden. There has been dual competition, some has been able to sell the resource services of human and physical knowledge capital, and others offering to sell unskilled labor at wages way below Swedish standards. This thesis will examine the changes in market position in the manufacturing sector, and how comparative advantage and the role of technology have impacted the changes. The empirical analysis is based on the relative international competitiveness index to examine how market position in different sectors has changed during the time-period 1985-2003. In the regression measures for human and physical capital has been included as well as R&D expenditure for both Sweden and the OECD countries. The results show that the changes in market position for most products are relatively small. What can be concluded is that it is not the sector as a whole that experience improving market positions instead it is certain products such as pharmaceutical, sulphate and electronic components among others. Sweden ranks very high in terms of resources dedicated to production of new technology and there are proofs on both side of the "Swedish Paradox"; which states that high technology exports are low given the high R&D investment. The result also indicates that Sweden has a labor-intensive disadvantage, i.e. indications that the market position for industries with high total capital-intensity has increased.

▼ The value and scope of telecom services have increased substantially in the decade from the mid 1990s. The telecom companies have offered not only telephone services but also data exchanges for example streaming services. Therefore, they now offer telecom services as packaging into which layered services are integrated. The number of actors involved in the market has increased due to the expansion of business areas, while rapidly changing technological trends have altered R&D methods. The thesis shows that the adoption of the marketing concept and the development of complex inter-firm technology based relationships underpin the creation and management of new telecom services. The relationships have originated from an exchange of technological knowledge and specialized skills. This research uses the NTT-centred collaboration system in Japan, which features relational exchanges and high mutual dependence. This case shows that inter-firm relationships greatly contributed in the development of technological resources in two ways; collecting advantageous technologies from others and mediating in the introduction of new technologies. In addition, developments in technology resulted in an expanded domain of applicability. Consequently, not only the market structure was changed but also the relationship between marketing and R&D changed. With increasing integration of the market, the number of related firms increased as firms concentrated on specific technologies, with additional firms having superior competitive advantages in each layered business area. The case in the thesis also shows mechanisms of changing inter-firm relationships under dynamic business circumstances; indirect exchanges occurred when inter-firm relationships changed. Inter-firm relationships are changed, keeping existing but adding new relationships. The study also indicates a new direction to study service marketing. As the new trend of service development in ICT industry develops so the integration abilities and the management of inter-firm relationships in supply-sides become more focused. The thesis points to the importance of these upstream activities (coordinating inter-firm relationships in a service-oriented approach) and advocates the presence of a facilitator who can bridge both upstream and downstream activities. The results should contribute to both marketing and technology management in academia as well as business practices in R&D management.

▼ In 2001 the IT industries in the world were in a recession and world top companies were in a deficit storm, but Samsung Electronics(SEC) still could make huge income. The success factors of SEC includes leadership, company culture, recruiting, huge investment, e-business, and sports marketing, etc. This thesis tries to do case study about Samsung Group, one of the representative Jaebol(Korean big companies) of Korea, and the main objects of study are SEC and electronic-related subsidiary companies like SDI, SEM etc., to study Samsung Groupâs innovation strategy and
R&
D management.
Firstly, this thesis divided the contents of SECâs Digital Convergence goal and strategy into B to B and B to C, and named as up-stream innovation and down-stream innovation respectively. As one of the main success factors of electronic industries is
R&
D, I empathize SECâs unusual technology learning or
R&
D strategy in the first part, that is
R&
D history of semiconductor, mobile phone, and TFT-LCD, and its
R&
D organization.
Secondly is the so-called innovation strategy, and this thesis define it to be consisted of four main factors, that is domestic up-stream innovation, international down-stream innovation, domestic down-stream innovation, and international up-stream innovation, which is its innovation process.
Finally, I analyzed SECâs financial ratio, to prove the above non-financial factors more specifically. As a result, Samsung invested huge money to
R&
D, which is needed for Digital Convergence product, like semiconductor, TFT-LCD, mobile phone etc, based on the vertical integration of group organization, growing to multinational company throughout the innovation strategy.

▼ This research develops a real options perspective framework for firms‘ valuation of strategic investments. I propose that a real options perspective can provide an effective means of re-examining and revising firms‘ strategic investment decisions in general, and of making individual, investment-level abandonment decisions in particular. The principal purposes of this research are to explore whether firms make abandonment decisions in accordance with real options theory, and the relative strength of the traditional economic theory, the behavioral theory of the firm and real options theory in explaining firms‘ abandonment decisions. I develop a set of hypotheses in the context of firms‘
R&
D investment strategies in the world chemical industry. Using U.S. patent renewal data, I empirically test the hypotheses. The results from the empirical analyses suggest that, 1) firms‘ actual innovation abandonment decisions are consistent with the predictions made from real options theory; and 2) a real options perspective provides better explanation of firms‘ abandonment decisions than traditional economic theory and the behavioral theory of the firm. Therefore, taking such a perspective allows us to better predict abandonment than the other models. In investigating whether insights from real options theory enlighten firm‘s abandonment decisions, this research contributes to the strategic decision making literature, real options research, RBV and dynamic capability research and innovation literature.

▼ The new product development (NPD) process has been long conceptualized as an intense information processing task, yet several questions about the role of information in shaping NPD decisions remain open. For instance, the persistent representation of NPD decisions as a single decision-maker outcome in existing theory; it limits our understanding of decisions that involve multiple and heterogeneous organizational stakeholders, and it appears distant from the managerial realities. This dissertation focuses on managerial decisions where information acquisition, ownership and interpretation exhibit heterogeneity. The first essay (Chapter 2) examines the role of informational asymmetries that competing firms face when investing in
R&
D. The second essay (Chapter 3) reveals the detrimental effects of interpretive diversity (i.e., different people may interpret differently the same information) on project termination decisions. The third essay (Chapter 4) examines how consumers' information regarding future market conditions can affect a firm's strategy on striking a balance between its primary and secondary markets.

▼ This study investigated multidimensional
perfectionism, depression, and relational health and quality in
women with clinical, subclinical, and without eating concerns.
Perfectionism, affective instability, and interpersonal
difficulties are identified as core features, or “maintaining
mechanisms,” of the most chronic and treatment-resistant eating
disorders (Fairburn et al., 2003). Goals of the study were to
better understand if and how these variables differ across severity
of eating disorder symptoms. It was predicted that the clinical
group would have the highest perfectionism and depression scores
and the lowest relational health scores, that the asymptomatic
group would have the lowest perfectionism and depression scores and
highest relational health scores, and that the subclinical group
scores would fall between these groups. Two hundred and eight
female college students and 38 women in treatment at an eating
disorders clinic completed the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised, the
Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, the Quality of
Relationships Inventory, the Relational Health Indices, and the
Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Two MANOVA were
performed; one on the perfectionism and depression variables, and
the second on the relational variables. Significant effects were
found for both sets of variables, but only two variables, APS-R
Discrepancy and Depression differentiated all 3 groups (clinical
eating disorders, subclinical eating concerns, and asymptomatic) in
the predicted directions. The strong link found between depression
and APS-R Discrepancy in those with eating disturbances suggests
that depression is an affective correlate to the cognitive
processes of maladaptive perfectionism. Higher levels of
perfectionistic self-presentation were linked with clinical eating
disorders, but this interpersonally-directed dimension of
perfectionism did not differentiate the subclinical and
asymptomatic groups. Findings regarding relational health were
significant, however, effect sizes were small. They suggest that
the most severe eating disorder symptoms may be associated with
less relational support, depth, authenticity and
engagement.

▼ Economia
MASTERS IN ECONOMICS
The relationship between patents and R&D involves different levels besides the ones most obvious to us. Throughout the history of economics, patents have arisen as the core of a system of incentives to private pursue of R&D investments, providing the mechanism that guaranteed the appropriability of the output of the knowledge produced. The seminal work of Romer (1990) demonstrated the need to develop a system to assure the necessary return on innovative efforts and thus privately sustain a model of continuous technological improvement and economic growth. Patenting would result in imperfect competition and legally establish the monopoly over the use of the knowledge produced. This led to patents being perceived as an intermediate output of R&D efforts. Though this relationship has been subject of intensive study by economists, the reverse causality issue remains to be thoroughly analyzed, particularly in a negative sense. Can more patents have a negative effect on R&D investment? In the present thesis we address this question, synthesizing the theoretical and empirical studies concerning both the conventional R&D-patents relationship and the reverse causality, in particular, the potential for a negative impact of patents over R&D. The theoretical survey on this issue uncovered several gaps in the literature, specifically in terms of availability of empirical analysis at the country level. Despite the literature on reverse causality direction being scarce; the macroeconomic perspective on this issue is even more unexplored. In fact, there is no evidence that ruled out the possibility of asymmetric effects of patents on R&D in accordance to the level of GDP and technology in general, and to `convergence clubs in particular.
Using panel data econometric estimation methods on a sample of 88 countries, over a eight-year period (1996-2003), and controlling for clubs of convergence to account for differences among countries in stages of economic development, we found mix support to the negativity of patent on R&D investment. Stratifying the sample by convergence clubs we obtain that accumulated patents positively impact on R&D intensity for the set of less developed countries whereas no statistically significant effect emerges in the case of higher developed converge clubs. Interestingly, when we restrict the highest developed convergence club down to countries with a R&D intensity above 3%, the negativity reverse causality arises, corroborating the asymmetric impact of patents on R&D investment depending on countries development and technological stage. Finally, we demonstrate that albeit causality appears to be stronger in the most intuitive appealing traditional direction, there is evidence supporting the theoretical conveyed double causality between R&D and Patent.

▼ Over the last few decades, the industrialized world in general and the automobile industry in particular was hit by immense changes which strongly influence the management of R&D. Trends such as globalization and sharp competition on worldwide open markets, increasing product complexity in order to meet the customers’ desires for more variety and individualization, technology fusion and cross industry innovations, high level of technological and competitive uncertainty, increasing pressure to reduce R&D budgets, and shorter time to market and reduced innovation cycles in consequence of rising competition, force companies to source external knowledge and to bring in and exploit outside-in innovations instead of reinventing them their selves. In the same way, the Open Innovation concept highlights the need for organizations to open up their innovation processes. As a consequence, many R&D organizations are being transformed in order to meet the upcoming challenges and established technological listening posts to source external knowledge in centers of technological excellence and innovation. This study focus on the knowledge acquisition, transformation and transfer from innovation cluster to central R&D, and examines the roles and typologies of technological gatekeepers. Based on a sound literature review and in-depth qualitative study of the case company BMW, this thesis explores how technological listening posts can take the mediating role of technology gatekeepers and how different mechanisms and typologies for gatekeeping can be deployed for optimal transformation and transfer of external knowledge into internal innovation.

▼ Canada has long been a proponent of free trade while at the same time defending the current supply management system that protects the dairy industry from import competition. In the most recent Doha Development Round of talks amongst nations belonging to the World Trade Organization, the validity of Canada's protectionist position has been questioned and it is conceivable that Canada may have to make significant changes in the dairy industry to allow more liberal trade policies to be enacted. The key purpose of this study is to find out how free trade will affect the research and development (R&D) incentives of Canadian dairy farmers. On one hand they may be induced to perform more R&D due to competition effects in order to lower costs and achieve a competitive advantage over the main competitor, the United States. On the other hand they may be induced to perform less R&D due to the spillover effect, which allows the Canadian R&D efforts to be used by the United States at no additional cost. It is found that the outcome of these two opposing forces depends on the market scale effect. If Canada is a net importer when the border opens the spillover effect may dominate and Canadian dairy producers may invest less into R&D than under the current protectionist policies. These results however will switch if Canada is found to be the net exporters. The results also depend on the level of the quota currently in place. If the current quota is chosen at a quantity relatively close to the amount supplied at the monopolistic level, a free trade regime may promote R&D efforts more so than supply management. On the other hand, if the current quota level in Canada is closer to the quantity that would be supplied in a competitive industry, Canadian dairy producers may invest less heavily in R&D efforts under a free trade regime than a supply management system.

▼ textabstractHow can labour productivity growth be raised in order to safeguard sustainable economic growth? This is the main question of this thesis. Labour productivity growth is the most important engine of economic growth in the OECD, and – in view of an ageing population – it will gain further importance for future prosperity. From this perspective, it is understandable that productivity is pushing the growth agenda in both academic and policymaking circles. If productivity is becoming increasingly important, then understanding differences in labour productivity patterns and its drivers becomes crucial. Predominantly, the role of two factors of labour productivity is considered in this book: research & development (R&D) and entrepreneurship. Although the importance of R&D for labour productivity development is deeply rooted in endogenous growth theory and the empirical literature, on many aspects of R&D both academics and policymakers are still in the dark. This thesis sheds light on a number of frequently asked questions: ‘How important exactly is R&D for productivity growth?’, ‘What determines R&D expenditure within a country?’, ‘Does the continuing internationalisation of R&D have consequences for economic growth in countries?’ and not in the least: ‘How can policy contribute to fostering R&D performance?’ Findings indicate that private, public and foreign R&D capital contribute as much as forty percent to labour productivity growth in the Netherlands. In addition, R&D expenditure is not exogenous and depends on a broad range of factors, such as the structure of the economy, the internationalisation process of R&D and institutional arrangements. Building on these results, the R&D shortfall of the Netherlands and the European Union is disentangled vis-à-vis the OECD and United States, respectively. The impact of entrepreneurship on labour productivity development is even more terra incognita than the role of R&D. Allegedly, entrepreneurship is an important conduit to reap the benefits of knowledge creation, but there are virtually no studies that show a long-run relationship between entrepreneurship and productivity development for an international panel of OECD countries. Empirical results in this book show that entrepreneurship has a stable and significant impact on the development of productivity levels. This thesis therefore provides new evidence of the important role that entrepreneurship and R&D play for our future welfare.

▼ There are still many puzzles to be solved concerning the relation between innovation and firm performance, in particular concerning the distinct roles of information and communication technology (ICT) and Research and Development (
R&
D) in creating new or improved products or production processes. This thesis provides evidence that both instances of innovation are important drivers of productivity and, thus, economic growth. The thesis consolidates the results of empirical work covering about 10 years of research on firm-level data that was aimed at understanding the importance for firm performance of innovation in a broad sense. Using econometric methods and recently developed innovation models, the several chapters investigate the distinct contributions to Total Factor Productivity (growth) of
R&
D and after controlling for the contributions of other inputs. In addition, special attention is given to role of ICT in enhancing the cumulativeness of innovation processes. This is achieved by analysing the interaction between technological and non-technological innovations and the role of ICT-related network externalities. It is shown that, especially in service production, ICT is an important driver of productivity (growth) and also an important enabler of other (non-technological) innovations. The cumulativeness of innovation is demonstrated by showing that firms that combine technological and non-technological innovations are among the most productive firms.

The relation between R&D and productivity in Italy is of increasing interest. The analysis carried out uses industry data in order to verify the relation between R&D and productivity in Italy between 1991 and 2002. The results obtained were compared to those obtained on the same 21 manufacturing and commercial industries in Germany.
The main findings are that elasticity of value added to technological capital (depreciated at 15%) is equal to 0.14 in Germany and 0.04 in Italy, that in Italy technological capital depreciates more slowly and that a decisive role is played by interaction between share of researchers and technological capital and by spillovers.

And what is the nature of the relationship among partner selection and two previously-studied protection mechanisms ?????? governance structure and alliance scope? Extending this research question to the international context, the second set of research questions asks how international

R&

R&
D alliances differ from bilateral ones in partner selection for the purpose of protecting participants?????? technological assets. Hypotheses are proposed and tested with a sample of 2,185
R&
D alliances involving companies in high technology industries. Results indicate that the more radical the innovation an
R&
D alliance intends to develop, the more likely the alliance will be formed between Friends than Strangers. However, under the same situation, firms are less likely to select Acquaintances than Strangers. A substitution effect was detected among partner selection, governance structure, and alliance scope used by firms to protect their valuable technological assets from being appropriated in
R&

R&
D alliances and/or traditional international
R&
D alliances, are more likely to select their prior partners than when forming cross-nation domestic
R&
D alliances. Moreover, this study shows that when an
R&
D alliance is formed by multiple companies, partner firms are more likely to be prior partners. I argue that concerns about knowledge leakage explain this result.

▼ Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the valuation of intangible assets in different financial environments. Value relevance of intangible investments has been largely recognized by indicating their close relatedness on future operating performance and valuation of firms. The financial environment of the country (market- or bank-based) is also found to be an important determinant of the economic performance of the firm. This thesis combines these two important issues by examining how a country's financial system affect the firm's investments and valuation of intangible assets.
The study consists of four essays and an introductory section. Essay I investigates the firm's investments in human capital in different legal- and financial environments. The results of this study indicate that human capital asset constitutes an essential part of the market value of firms in all our sample countries. The results also suggest that firms make investments in human capital to increase their innovation capabilities and to improve their future benefits.
Essay II investigates the firm's investments in R&D capital in different financial systems. The common result concerning both financial system is that the estimated R&D capital constitutes a great part of the firm's unrecorded goodwill. The main finding of the study is that the effects of the firm's past profitability and growth on its estimated R&D capital are stronger in bank-based than market-based financial systems. This result emphasizes the role of bank-based financing over market-based financing in the efficiency of resource allocation to R&D investments.
Essay III investigates the stock market's response to the firm's R&D investments in different financial systems by taking account of lead-lag structure between the firm's R&D investments and its market value. The main result of the study is that the stock markets' response to current R&D investments varies between different financial systems with regards to the point in time against which the stock market response is examined. This study suggests that information disclosure policies, level of stock-market expectations and attitude towards risk are the most important potential factors that explain the valuation differences of R&D between market- and bank-based financial systems.
Essay IV investigates the effect's of a country's financial system on current R&D investments and the future profitability of the firm. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows: the firm's current R&D investments are more strongly associated with the level of future firm profitability in bank-based than market-based financial system whereas current R&D investments are more strongly associated with the uncertainty of future firm profitability in market-based than bank-based financial system. The findings of this study suggest that differences in the valuation of R&D between market-based and bank-based financial systems mainly depends on the information…

▼ This dissertation aims to evaluate technology spin-offs Brazilian economy in the context of internationalization of multinational companies. Since 1980, the multinationals modify its international production strategies stressing efforts in R&D and other high value-added activities and affiliated companies gain a more important role at the international strategy of the group. As an indirect result of the technological role of the affiliated in national economy technology spin-offs are an important subject that need to be more attention. This work analyses the chacteristics of spin-offs from different origins focusing on affiliated as the parent organization.

R&
D alliance becomes a popular way to develop products by cooperating with external organizations in the face of severe global competition. The enterprises can improve core competence and reduce environmental uncertainty through
R&
D alliances. However, the success rate of alliance is not high. Consequently, how to organize and operate
R&
D alliances effectively and successfully is the key competence of enterprise to win in the future. In order to increase the success rate of
R&
D alliance, the purpose of this study is to create a conceptual and integrated model for developing the successful mechanisms of formation and operation on
R&
D alliances.
VPDCA (Vision-Plan-Do-Check-Action) cycle was developed as a conceptual framework through literature survey and case study for investigating the successful mechanisms of formation and operation on
R&
D alliances, which is to be regarded as a âlearning by doingâ process. First of all, vision leading is the first step to assure alliance to be succeeded. SSO (Search-Select-Organize) was developed as a successful process model for organizing
R&
D alliances.
R&
D alliance operation was regarded as a teamwork operation in this study. Only has the good effective team operation, can achieve expected vision. LICTEL (Leadership-Integration-Communication-Trust-Execution-Learning) was considered as the key aspects to run alliances successfully. The key success factors of each aspect are as follows:
Leadership: vision, inspiration vitality, integrity and delegation
Integration: open, linkage, collaboration, leverage outside resources, synergy
Communication: dialogue, open mind, passion, patience and positive thinking
Trust: co-value, cooperation, communication, consensus and commitment
Execution: discipline, push and pull
Learning: connect, interaction and share
The achievements of operation and management on
R&
D alliance should be evaluated finally. 3P (Pleasure-Performance-Profit) was considered as key measures to evaluate the outcomes of
R&
D alliance implementation. Furthermore, effectiveness, efficiency and competence build-up are regarded as key measures to evaluate implementation performance of
R&
D alliance.

▼ âResearch and Developmentâ possess three major characteristics: (1) Lots of uncertainty will be encountered during the process of
R&
D; (2) Required for a certain of expenses and manpower; (3) Long pay back time; Therefore, the decision-making of
R&
D could be very complicated with far-reaching influence. Nevertheless, once the decision maker made an incorrect decision, it may cause lots of consequences that can't be remedied. For this reason, the key
subject of this paper is to construct a decision-making model to help the decision maker to make RD decisions. While making the decisions of RD projects, its decision making environment is often: (1) subjective (2) quantized (3) group participated , or (4) uncertain, Therefore, this paper use T.L.SAATYâs AHP-ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS to build a decision-making model for the equipment
R&

The DM model use L- Companyâs â
R&

Analysis of characteristic and construction of Hierarchies Structure will be carried out to determine evaluating items of each hierachy and the relation of each hierachy. Moreover, the analysis will be correctly in accordance with AHPâs evaluation scaling to make the Pair wise Comparison and get the maximum eigenvalue and eigenvector, to achieve the priority for decision making of L- Companyâs âEquipment

▼ Many Taiwanese multinational corporation (MNC) increase the proportion of their foreign direct investment in
R&
D activities year by year. The companies investing in the advanced nations operate
R&
D activities in the local market obviously. Through this thesis, we desire to know the status of overseas
R&
D sites in these cases and their motives. Futhermore, we also want to discuss how they build up and operate these
R&
D sites. Due to much more innovative knowledge resources outside the parent country, Taiwanese companies need to globalize their
R&
D sites to acquire the
R&
D results; in addition, establish the network of overseas
R&
D sites makes MNCs to promote their products in the global market smoothly. However, MNCs have to disperse their corporate resources in diffirent locations, and give each site diffirent roles and tasks. Other important issues among these MNCs are how to manage these dispersed
R&
D sites to achieve the efficiency and the flexibility and what the strategies they consider.
Overseas
R&
D activity of Taiwanese MNCs is still evolving, and Taiwanese companies have their particular background. In order to find out the causes of this situation, we used the case study approach. We selected the cases which had the complete building process of overseas
R&
D activities, and interviewed the top managers who had the experiences in the process to gather the materials. Besides, other second-hand materials are also providing us more information to comprehend our sample cases.
We found that Taiwanese MNCs had diffirent motives in each stage. They need to respond to local market, and provide the commercial products rapidly. In addition, local technology and human resource are also the important wealth to strengthen headquartersâ
R&
D capabilities. Under the consideration of speed, cost and competition, MNCs integrated the
R&
D resources of parent and host countries aggressively, and they had to think how to match the corporate strategy. Further, they tried to manage organizational information flows and coordinate these
R&
D activities. Moreover, using several kinds of communication patterns helps headquarters to understand and control overseas
R&
D activities, and makes
R&
D knowledge and experiences circulate inside the organization to stimulate organizational innovative capacity.
