Tiedonhakujärjestelmät ovat vuorovaikutteisia atk-sovelluksia, joiden avulla hakijaa kiinnostavien dokumenttien löytäminen pyritään tekemään mahdollisimman vaivattomaksi. Suuriin dokumenttiaineistoihin liittyvät tiedonhaun ongelmat ovat tuttu ilmiö esimerkiksi Internetin sanahakupalveluja (esim. AltaVista tai Ihmemaa) käyttäville. Tiedonhaun kokeellisessa tutkimuksessa pyritään selvittämään miten hyvin tiedonhakujärjestelmät toimivat käyttäjän näkökulmasta ja löytämään uusia menetelmiä hakujen tehostamiseksi. Teknisen järjestelmän toiminnan arviointi on ollut kuitenkin hankalaa, koska perinteiset tutkimusmenetelmät eivät ole selkeästi pystyneet erottelemaan hakijan ja teknisen järjestelmän vaikutusta. Kehitetty tutkimusmenetelmä perustuu testikokoelman käyttöön, joka sisältää tekstidokumenttien tietokannan, suurehkon joukon määriteltyjä testihakutehtäviä sekä relevanssiarviot siitä, mitkä dokumentit sisältävät testihakutehtävien edellyttämää informaatiota. Väitöskirjatutkimus tuotti kaksi merkittävää menetelmäinnovaatiota: Testihakutehtävät annetaan yhden tai useamman ammattihakijan analysoitavaksi ja he laativat niistä hyvin kattavat hakusuunnitelmat. Kattavat hakusuunnitelmat kuvaavat periaatteessa kaikki vaihtoehtoiset tavat muotoilla järkeviä kyselyjä annetusta testitehtävästä. Kattavien hakusuunnitelmien perusteella voidaan muodostaa ns. kyselyjen säätelyavaruus. Perinteisissä menetelmissä testitehtäviä edustavat kyselyt tuotetaan melko sattumanvaraisesti ja kattavat vain suppeita osia kyselyjen säätelyavaruudesta. Toinen innovaatio liittyy kaikkein parhaiten toimivan kyselyn löytämiseen kaikkien tarjolla olevien joukosta. Tämä perustuu kahteen automaattiseen prosessiin, joissa hakusuunnitelmat pilkotaan ensin alkeiskyselyiksi, joista koostetaan parhaiten toimiva alkeiskyselyjen yhdistelmä optimointialgoritmia käyttäen. Optimoinnissa käytetään hyväksi relevanssitietoja ja sen optimointitavoite voidaan määritellä eri hakutilanteita vastaavasti. Optimoinnin tavoitteeksi voidaan esimerkiksi asettaa kysely, joka minimoi käyttäjän selailuvaivan hänen etsiessään kaikki relevantit dokumentit tai vain kymmenen parasta. Menetelmä pystyy näin kartoittamaan teknisen tiedonhakujärjestelmän toiminnallisen tehokkuuden ylärajan eri tilanteissa. ▼ Systems trained on linguistically annotated data achieve strong performance for many language processing tasks. This encourages the idea that annotations can improve any language processing task if applied in the right way. However, despite widespread acceptance and availability of highly accurate parsing software, it is not clear that ad hoc information retrieval (IR) techniques using annotated documents and requests consistently improve search performance compared to techniques that use no linguistic knowledge. In many cases, retrieval gains made using language processing components, such as part-of-speech tagging and head-dependent relations, are offset by significant negative effects. This results in a minimal positive, or even negative, overall impact for linguistically motivated approaches compared to approaches that do not use any syntactic or domain knowledge. In some cases, it may be that syntax does not reveal anything of practical importance about document relevance. Yet without a convincing explanation for why linguistic annotations fail in IR, the intuitive appeal of search systems that ‘understand’ text can result in the repeated application, and mis-application, of language processing to enhance search performance. This dissertation investigates whether linguistics can improve the selection of query terms by better modelling the alignment process between natural language requests and search queries. It is the most comprehensive work on the utility of linguistic methods in IR to date. Term selection in this work focuses on identification of informative query terms of 1-3 words that both represent the semantics of a request and discriminate between relevant and non-relevant documents. Approaches to word association are discussed with respect to linguistic principles, and evaluated with respect to semantic characterization and discriminative ability. Analysis is organised around three theories of language that emphasize different structures for the identification of terms: phrase structure theory, dependency theory and lexicalism. The structures identified by these theories play distinctive roles in the organisation of language. Evidence is presented regarding the value of different methods of word association based on these structures, and the effect of method and term combinations. Two highly effective, novel methods for the selection of terms from verbose queries are also proposed and evaluated. The first method focuses on the semantic phenomenon of ellipsis with a discriminative filter that leverages diverse text features. The second method exploits a term ranking algorithm, PhRank, that uses no linguistic information and relies on a network model of query context. The latter focuses queries so that 1-5 terms in an unweighted model achieve better retrieval effectiveness than weighted IR models that use up to 30 terms. ▼ The ever increasing rate of digital information available from on-line sources drives the need for building information monitoring applications to assist users in tracking relevant changes in these sources and accessing information that is of interest to them in a timely manner. Continuous queries (CQs) are standing queries that are continuously evaluated over dynamic sources to track information changes that meet user specified thresholds and notify users of new results in real-time. CQ systems can be considered as powerful middleware for supporting information monitoring applications. A significant challenge in building CQ systems is scalability, caused by the large number of users and queries, and by the large and growing number of information sources with high update rates. In this thesis we use CQs to shepherd through and address the challenges involved in supporting information monitoring applications in future computing platforms. The focus is on P2P web monitoring in Internet systems, location monitoring in mobile systems, and environmental monitoring in sensor systems. Although different computing platforms require different software architectures for building scalable CQ services, there is a common design philosophy that this thesis advocates for making CQ services scalable and efficient. This can be summarized as "move computation close to the places where the data is produced." A common challenge in scaling CQ systems is the resource-intensive nature of query evaluation, which involves continuously checking updates in a large number of data sources and evaluating trigger conditions of a large number of queries over these updates, consuming both cpu and network bandwidth resources. If some part of the query evaluation can be pushed close to the sources where the data is produced, the resulting early filtering of updates will save both bandwidth and cpu resources. In summary, in this thesis we show that distributed CQ architectures that are designed to take advantage of the opportunities provided by ubiquitous computing platforms and pervasive networks, while at the same time recognizing and resolving the challenges posed by these platforms, lead to building scalable and effective CQ systems to better support the demanding information monitoring applications of the future. ▼ There is an increasing demand to efficiently process emerging types of queries, such as progressive queries (PQ), on large scale databases from numerous contemporary applications including telematics, e-commerce, and social media. Unlike a conventional query, a PQ consists of a set of interrelated step-queries (SQ). A user formulates a new SQ on the fly based on the result(s) from the previously executed SQ(s). Processing PQs raises a number of new challenges. Existing database management systems were not designed to efficiently process such queries. In this dissertation, we propose a suite of novel materialized-view based techniques to efficiently process PQs. First, we propose a dynamic materialized-view based approach to efficiently processing a special type of PQs, called monotonic linear PQs. We introduce a so-called superior relationship graph to capture superior relationships among SQs of such a PQ and suggest a method to estimate the benefit of keeping the result of an SQ as a materialized view using the graph. To efficiently construct the superior relationship graph, we propose two algorithms: generating-based and pruning-based. To improve the view searching efficiency and quality, we design an algorithm with a special storage structure to store and manage the materialized views. Second, to handle generic PQs, we define a so-called multiple query dependency graph to capture the data source dependency relationships that exist among SQs and external tables of a generic PQ. Using the graph, a mathematical benefit estimation model, which takes both the impact and the effectiveness of materialization into consideration, is derived. A greedy method and a dynamic programming method to solve the view maintenance problem are proposed. Third, to efficiently find usable materialized views from the view space/set for answering a given SQ, we suggest a dynamic materialized view index method. A special index tree structure with nodes ordered by a two-level priority rule that facilitates efficient locating of different types of nodes is designed. Bitmaps encoded with special methods are also used to refine the pruning of unusable views during a search. Fourth, to support PQs in a big data environment like Hadoop, we propose an index based technique for performing a new column family join operation on Hbase tables. To efficiently process such a join operation, we suggest a multiple freedom family index. A parallel MapReduce algorithm to construct the index is developed. To perform a column family join on two Hbase tables using the indexes, we present two partitioning methods to balance the workload among map nodes in a MapReduce algorithm. The introduced column family join operation and its relevant processing technique can ensure the closure property that is essential to the processing of PQs. To examine the performance of the proposed techniques, we performed extensive empirical and theoretical analyses. Dans cette thèse, nous envisageons la question de l’ambiguïté des requêtes soumises à un moteur de recherche dans un domaine particulier qui est l’actualité. Nous nous appuyons sur les travaux récents dans le domaine de la recherche d’information (RI) qui ont montré l’apport d’informations contextuelles pour mieux cerner et traiter plus adéquatement le besoin informationnel. Nous faisons ainsi l’hypothèse que les éléments d’information disponibles dans une application de RI (contextes présents dans la base documentaire, répétitions et reformulations de requêtes, dimension diachronique de la recherche) peuvent nous aider à étudier ce problème d’ambiguïté. Nous faisons également l’hypothèse que l’ambiguïté va se manifester dans les résultats ramenés par un moteur de recherche. Dans ce but, nous avons mis en place un dispositif pour étudier l’ambiguïté des requêtes reposant sur une méthode de catégorisation thématique des requêtes, qui s’appuie sur unecatégorisation experte. Nous avons ensuite montré que cette ambiguïté est différente de celle repérée par une ressource encyclopédique telle que Wikipédia. Nous avons évalué ce dispositif de catégorisation en mettant en place deux tests utilisateurs. Enfin, nous fournissons une étude basée sur un faisceau d’indices contextuels afin de saisir le comportement global d’une requête.

In this thesis, we consider the question of the ambiguity of queries submitted to a search engine in a particular area that is news.We build on recent work in the field of information retrieval (IR) that showed the addition of contextual information to better identify and address more adequately the information need. On this basis, we make the hypothesis that the elements of information available in an application of IR (contexts in the collection of documents, repetitions and reformulations of queries, diachronic dimension of the search) can help us to examine this problem of ambiguity. We also postulate that ambiguity will manifest in the results returned by a search engine. In this purpose to evaluate these hypotheses, we set up a device to study the ambiguity of queries based on a method of thematic categorization of queries, which relies on an expert categorization. We then show that this ambiguity is different which is indicated by an encyclopedic resources such as Wikipedia.We evaluate this categorization device by setting up two user tests. Finally, we carry out a study based on a set of contextual clues in order to understand the global behavior of a query.

▼ Network structure exists in various types of data in the real world, such as online and offline social networks, traffic networks, computer networks, brain networks, and countless other cases where there are relationships between different entities in the data. What are the roles of network structures in these data? First, the network captures inherent characteristics of the data themselves. This is clear from the definition of the network, which represents the relationship between entities: e.g., the social links among people in a social network describe how they interact with each other; a road network summarizes how the roads are laid out geographically; a brain network obtained from fMRI images represents pairs of brain regions that are active at the same time; a computer network constrains the paths via which internet packages and thus information or viruses can spread. Second, the network structures affect the evolution of the data over time. For example, new friendship links in an online social network are frequently created between friends of friends. Similarly, the current road network structure is without a doubt taken into consideration when roads are added or temporarily closed. As we grow, our brains also grow, including the additions of useful links or the clean up of unnecessary links between brain regions. Third, the network structures act as guidance for many different processes happening in the data. For instance, the links between users on social network dictate how gossips can spread; the roads influence how traffic flows in a city; the links between brain regions affects the way we think and how effectively we do things; the connections between computers route the transfer of any information on the internet.In this thesis, I studied the network effect in various networked behaviors, including analyzing such effect, finding its patterns, and predicting future networked behaviors. First, I gained insights into the data by analyzing the accompanied network structures as well as its evolution. Second, I proposed algorithms for mining different network patterns that help summarize the effect of the network structures on different networked behaviors. Finally, I proposed models to predict the evolution of networked behaviors over time. Toward these tasks, I explored a wide variety of network data, including protein-protein interaction networks, online social networks, collaboration networks, chemical compounds, and traffic networks. Overall, I tackled these network data in different aspects and developed a number of methods for effectively mining and forecasting networked behaviors in data.

▼ Massive urban trajectories of humans and vehicles, together with road network and Points of Interest (POIs), have been used in a wide range of research by transportation engineers and urban planning professionals. This has contributed to improve urban planning, transportation management, and knowledge of human dynamics. Interactive visual analytics tools allow a variety of users to conduct iterative visual studies over the big data with intuitive visual representations and convenient interactions. Typically, the visual analytics tasks should be conducted in three main phases: (1) Preprocessing and preparing raw trajectory data with cleaning, enrichment, aggregation, and transformations. (2) Developing efficient data structures and query operations to support interactive visual querying and analysis over big data. (3) Designing visual interface with effective and convenient human-computer interactions. Firstly, this dissertation develops data preprocessing tools of various trajectories, road networks, and POIs, which can be directly used by general users through a web-based system. Users can directly upload raw trajectory data, while the system automatically fetches corresponding road segments data from OpenStreetMap (OSM), extracts zip code regions, or creates grid rectangular regions to couple the raw GPS data with geographical context. The system also automatically matches the trajectories with these road segments or regions. Secondly, effective data models are designed to store and manage heterogeneous urban data in a spatial database called the Trajectory DataBase (TrajBase). The key contribution is to develop trajectories and road segments (or regions) based geo-indexing scheme for trajectory-based urban study. This scheme can support fast spatial-temporal queries and visualization, while the traditional geo-indexing scheme is mostly designed for point-based geo-data. Thirdly, based on the proposed data models and tools, visual analytics queries and functions are supported in open-source visual systems which benefit domain users and practitioners of a great variety. The data models and the preprocessing tools are integrated into an open source software called the Trajectory Analytics (TrajAnalytics), which is developed to meet a dire need from domain researchers to analyze their trajectory datasets. During the research, new techniques were also developed to enhance the precision of road segments of the extracted road network. Moreover, a new graph-based model called the Urban Structure Accessibility Graph (USAGraph) is further developed as a dual road network graph to construct an efficient data structure that can manage trajectories over graph database created from the enhanced road network. The graphs store and manage traffic information, taxi trip information and POI information of different time periods. They facilitate rapid graph-based computation of urban accessibility. ▼ The purpose of this research is to investigate the research problem: Why does emergent usage occur in adaptive information systems? Being motivated to explore this phenomenon from the experiential perspective, three research questions were posed: (1) What experiential factors describe emergent usage of adaptive information systems? (2) What generative mechanisms must exist for such emergent usage to be possible?" (3) What explains the relations of the mechanisms to effect emergent usage of such information systems? Emergent usage of adaptive information systems, predominantly accessed with smart mobile devices has become pervasive. The research problem, therefore, arises as a result of the continued under-theorization of emergent usage of adaptive information systems and lack of theory to explain why such usage occurs. To answer the research questions, an intensive single organization case-study, underpinned by critical realism, was deployed. The research explored an adaptive e-financial system developed by the case organization for public use. The research was aimed at identifying the causal mechanisms and the enabling contextual conditions that explain the system's emergent usage and the experiential factors that describe such usage. Multiple sources of qualitative data, namely, participant observation, interviews, and photography were used to collect data between 2012 and 2014. The retroductive data analysis employed a research model which was developed from a theoretical redescription of the phenomenon using a conceptual framework synthesized from literature and theories of complex adaptive systems (CAS) and meta-design. The findings were encapsulated in a concluding model termed, the Technology Emergent Usage Model (TEUM), as the key theoretical contribution of this thesis. TEUM is an explanatory case specific mid-range theory. The theory's relevance is based on its openness to flexible interpretation when applied to different contexts in future research, without making claim to its universality. Other contributions include methodological and practical contributions to highlight an area where there has been little or no empirical research to date. Καθημερινά προκύπτουν νέα προβλήματα, που η λύση τους απαιτεί αποδοτικές και κλιμακώσιμες εφαρμογές για την επεξεργασία αυτού του τεράστιου όγκου πληροφορίας. Τέτοια ερωτήματα επικεντρώνονται συνήθως στο να απαντήσουν ποια γεγονότα συνέβησαν ή συνέβαιναν κατά την διάρκεια ενός χρονικού διαστήματος. ́Ομως τα παραδοσιακά συστήματα για τη διαχείριση τέτοιου είδους ερωτημάτων δεν μπορούν να αντεπεξέλθουν στον όγκο δεδομένων που παράγονται τη σημερινή εποχή από ορισμένες εφαρμογές, με αποτέλεσμα να μην υπάρχει μία αποδοτική λύση. Για να αντιμετωπιστεί το πρόβλημα αυτό προτείνεται η χρήση συστημάτων νεφών υπολογιστών, τέτοιων που θα καταστήσουν διαχειρίσιμο αυτόν τον τεράστιο όγκο δεδομένων. Τα υπάρχοντα, όμως, έως σήμερα συστήματα νεφών υπολογιστών δεν διαθέτουν τη δυνατότητα υποστήριξης τέτοιου είδους ερωτημάτων. Στην εργασία αυτή, αρχικά, μελετήθηκε το πρόβλημα και οι σχετικές λύσεις που είχαν προταθεί παλαιότερα, όπως πχ. τα δέντρα ευθυγράμμων τμημάτων (Segment trees). Αυτές οι δομές επιτρέπουν την απάντηση των ερωτημάτων που περιγράφονται παραπάνω με αποδοτικό τρόπο. Στη συνέχεια μελετήθηκε η δυνατότητα εφαρμογής τους σε περιβάλλοντα νεφών υπολογιστών, ενώ διερευνήθηκαν πιθανές εναλλακτικές λύσεις που θα εκμεταλλεύονται καλύτερα τις δυνατότητες που προσφέρουν τα συστήματα αυτά. Η μελέτη αυτή οδήγησε στην δημιουργία νέων δομών δεδομένων και αλγορίθμων, ή τροποποιήσεις των υπαρχόντων, που βοηθούν στην αποδοτική επίλυση του προβλήματος. Τέλος πραγματοποιήθηκε σύγκριση της απόδοσης των λύσεων και τον αλγορίθμων που προτείνονται με τις ήδη υπάρχουσες. Τα αποτελέσματα της σύγκρισης έδειξαν βελτίωση του χρόνου εκτέλεσης έως και μία τάξης μεγέθους σε μερικές περιπτώσεις.

▼ This PhD research project investigated the failure of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) ICT service delivery project between the South African Department of Labour (DOL) and Siemens Information Services (SIS). The research investigated conditions contributing to management failure of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Implementation project, which had the objective of improving the Department of Labour's service operations and the transfer of ERP technology competence to the DOL. An important objective of this research was to develop an understanding of the special challenges of PPP management in the context of emerging and developing countries. International organizations such as the IMF, World Bank and United Nations (UN) have been encouraging emerging and developing countries to adopt PPPs as vehicles for developing technology competence and improving public sector efficiency. However, little research has been conducted to discover whether these countries have the competencies to successfully implement and manage PPPs. The goal of this PhD study was to develop an understanding of factors and conditions influencing the DOL-SIS PPP failure in order to develop theory and approaches, which could help improve management practices in the area of contracting-out ICT service delivery in the public sector of the Republic of South Africa. The research was guided by an agency theory framework and utilised a multi-method approach to conduct three empirical investigations into the PPP institutional framework, project governance and public accountability aspects of the DOL-SIS project. Some important findings of this research are: (1) Robust institutional policies and governance mechanisms specific to PPPs for ICT service delivery are necessary but not sufficient to combat risks of failure; robust mechanisms for performance monitoring and penalties for shirking are also necessary. (2) Public sector managers need specialised knowledge and competence to effectively manage private partners in the execution of ICT PPP contracts; over dependence on the private partners can significantly increase the risk of project failure, and encourage opportunistic behaviour and shirking by the private partner. (3) Transparent project governance and public accountability mechanisms are necessary to maintaining public support and combating opportunistic behaviour of both private and public partners on a PPP ICT services project. The thesis comprises three empirical studies: Study 1 used an agency theory framework to interrogate the PPP institutional framework to understand its provisions for identifying and managing risk factors in ICT service delivery projects. Study 2 analysed data from interviews with stakeholders, the contract meeting minutes and other relevant documents, guided by the agency theory framework to develop an understanding of project governance challenges. ▼ At first glance, innovation and risk management seem like two opposing disciplines with diverse objectives. The former seeks to be flexible and encourages enhanced solutions and new ideas, while the latter can be seen as stifling such innovative thinking. Since there is a failure rate of as many as eight out of every ten products launched, it is perhaps necessary for organisations to consider applying more structured approaches to innovation, in order to better manage risks and to increase the chances of delivering improved goods and services. A risk management approach is well suited to address the challenge of failure, as it focuses not only on the negative impact of risks but also on the opportunities they present. It aligns these with the strategic objectives of the organisation to increase the chances of its success. The research objective of this study was to establish how to embed risk management within the innovation divisions of an organisation to ensure that more efficient products and services are delivered to customers. To achieve this end, action research was conducted in a large organisation operating in a high-technology environment that launches many diverse products and services and rapidly expanding service offerings to other industries. The study took four years to complete and delivered multiple interventions that successfully embedded risk management within the organisation, leading to changed behaviours and double-loop learning. Two main knowledge contributions are offered by the study. Firstly, a generic and empirically validated integrated Innovation and Risk Management Framework (IRMF) is developed and guides new product and service development by considering both best practices and risks. Secondly, a risk dashboard is designed as a design science artefact within the action research cycles, which consolidates all the knowledge that was generated during the study. This is ultimately a visual interface to support stage-gate decision making. Since the context of the study was broad, extensive and complicated, the use of mixed-method research complemented and expanded on the findings by providing another layer of support and validation. This thesis highlights the complexity of innovation and presents the need for an organising framework that will encourage innovation but is sufficiently flexible to cater for diverse needs and risks. The study delivers several other, valuable contributions regarding what, how and why incidents occur within the real-world context of new product and service development. Several generic artefacts, such as risk processes and maturity frameworks, are also developed, which can guide risk and new product and service development practitioners to deliver more efficient product and services.
