▼ In this thesis, we give a detailed
construction of the crossed product of a C*-algebra by a locally
compact group. In Chapter 1, we review some preliminary results on
locally compact groups and C*-algebras. In Chapter 2, Haar measures
on locally compact groups are studied and a brief harmonic analysis
is discussed. In Chapter 3, we study vector-valued integration on
groups and prove a version of the Fubini theorem for vector-valued
integrals. In Chapter 4, transformation groups are considered, and
C*-dynamical systems and their covariant representations are
investigated. Finally, we explore in Chapter 5 the construction of
crossed products of C*-algebras and provide some examples of
crossed products. Some representations associated with crossed
products are also briefly
discussed.

▼ Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) produced in the
reverse transsulfuration pathway is a significant signaling
molecule. The two known pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent
enzymes that catalyze H2 S generation in mammals are cystathionine
β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE). The interaction
between H2 S/CSE and NO/NOS systems, which have regulatory roles,
has been recently discovered in mice. To study the effects of
signaling molecules NOx on human recombinant cystathionine γ-lyase,
recombinant CSE was incubated in the presence of low or high oxygen
contents with NO donors diethylamine NONOate (DEANO) and
S-Nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). The enzyme was then tested for H2 S
production upon incubation with the CSE substrate, L-cysteine. A
novel, real-time H2 S detection method using H2 S-permeable
polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and thiol-reactive probe, Ellman's
reagent, was utilized for enzyme activity measurement. These
experiments reveal that the catalytic efficiency, Kcat /KM , of
substrate was found to be significantly affected by NO incubation.
NO incubation decreased the enzyme activity by lowering the binding
affinity of the substrate to the enzyme. At 2 ppm or 16 ppm oxygen
concentration, NO released from NO donor was proposed to directly
modify protein residues such as cysteine, tryptophan and tyrosine.
In addition, inhibition of NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophage
can induce H 2 S production. These studies indicate a potential
regulatory role of NO in H2 S production by either directly
reacting with H2 S or modulating H2 S-producing
pathways.

▼ Proteins are ubiquitous in nature,
carrying out many of life's functions. However, for these
biomolecules to function correctly they must be accurately
synthesized. The task of ensuring the desired accuracy is achieved
falls to Aminoacyl tRNA Synthetases (aaRS). These enzymes catalyze
the activation and transfer of amino acids to tRNA. In addition to
carrying out these reactions, they also edit against the
incorporation of incorrect amino acids. Within this thesis the many
facets of aaRS editing and accuracy are examined in detail. In
particular, the editing mechanism of Hcy and Hse in MetRS is
elucidated in detail. These results allow us to infer
generalizations of the editing of Hcy within many aaRS's. Zn(II)'s
role in catalysis and accuracy for SerRS, CysRS and ThrRS is also
examined in some detail and gives key insights into a new potential
role it may play.

▼ The coordination bond is very useful
for supramolecular chemists because of its directionality and
reversibility which lead to stable compounds. This thesis describes
the synthesis and characterization of new right-angled
benzimidazole-based pyridyl ligands and the resulting assemblies
that are formed when these ligands were combined with a cis
-protected platinum(II) complex. Chapter one gives a brief
introduction about how coordination chemistry interfaces with
supramolecular chemistry by utilizing coordination bonding in
self-assemblies. Chapter two describes the preparation and
characterization of new T-shaped bipyridine ligands with a
benzimidazole core and the surprising folded tetramers resulted
from the combination of these ligands with a well-known
platinum(II) metal corner. Synthesis and characterization of
another T-shaped tridentate pyridyl ligand built on the same
benzimidazole framework is summarized in Chapter three. Reaction of
this ligand with platinum(II) cis-protected complex resulted in a
novel octahedral M 6 L 4 cage. Chapter four provides conclusions
and suggestions for future work.

▼ Biaryl propargyl acetate dicobalt
hexacarbonyl complexes readily undergo Lewis acid mediated
intramolecular Nicholas reactions to afford dibenzocycloheptyne
complexes. This thesis describes the extension of this protocol
towards studies of intramolecular Nicholas reactions with similar
biaryl complexes to form dibenzocyclooctyne-Co 2 (CO) 6 complexes.
These investigations have been performed on several different
derivatives of biaryl systems and have afforded fair to good yields
of dibenzocyclooctyne-Co 2 (CO) 6 complexes. One of the major
factors governing the yield of intramolecular Nicholas reactions
was found to be the amount of Lewis acid employed along with
absence or presence of EtN i Pr 2 . The studies conducted have also
shown that in some cases, upon the cyclization there is restriction
of the biaryl axial rotation due to the four ortho substituents,
which constitutes formation of an axis of chirality. In addition,
we have also exploited intramolecular Nicholas reactions of biaryl
propargyl acetate dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes towards the
synthesis of tenuifolin.

▼ In 2012, Bartholdi, Siegenthaler, and Zalesskii computed the rigid kernel for the only known group for which it is non-trivial, theHanoi towers group. There they determined the kernel was the Klein 4 group. We present a simpler proof of this theorem. In thecourse of the proof, we also compute the rigid stabilizers and present proofs that this group is a self-similar, self-replicating, regular branch group.
We then construct a family of groups which generalize the Hanoi towers group and study the congruence subgroup problem for the groups in this family. We show that unlike the Hanoi towers group, the groups in this generalization are just infinite and have trivial rigid kernel. We also put strict bounds on the branch kernel. Additionally, we show that these groups have subgroups of finite index with non-trivial rigid kernel, adding infinitely many new examples. Finally, we show that the topological closures of these groups have Hausdorff dimension arbitrarily close to 1.

▼ Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) can act to catalyze numerous organic reactions. To increase its recovery and reuse, it has been tethered to dendrimers and to micellar systems, creating nano-scale catalytic pockets for reactions to proceed. Previously developed systems show diminished reactivity over time as the products of the reaction fill up the nano-scale reactor. Thus, the goal of my research is to use RAFT polymerization methods to synthesize a hydrophobic polymer chain bearing 4-methylaminopyridine units and to attach it to a hydrophilic polymer chain to create a polymer system capable of micelle formation in solution. These functionalized micelles are designed to be selectively opened and closed by changing the temperature, thus allowing the product to be removed from the micelle and avoiding the diminished catalytic activity that other polymer-supported catalytic systems show. A monomer with DMAP-like activity was made by reacting 4-methylaminopyridine with 3-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate that could be polymerized into a hydrophobic polymer chain, and progress towards polymerizing the functionalized monomer was made.

▼ Influenza A and B viruses are significant human pathogens responsible for the annual seasonal "flu". Diverged some 2000 years ago, influenza B virus has several important differences from influenza A virus, including lower receptor-binding affinity and very limited host range. Based on sequence comparison and our prior structural studies, we hypothesized that a key difference in the receptor-binding site of influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA), phenylalaline (Phe) 95 in influenza B virus HA (BHA), versus tyrosine (Tyr) in influenza A virus HA (AHA), is possibly the molecular basis for the different receptor-binding affinity. We further hypothesized that this could be at least partially responsible for the very limited host range of influenza B virus. By using glycan and red blood cell binding assays, we demonstrated that the mutation Phe95[arrow right]Tyr in BHA substantially enhanced receptor-binding affinity. Furthermore, this mutation efficiently competed against the infection of influenza A virus and greatly improved the binding of BHA to three mammalian cell lines. Taken together, residue 95 of BHA appears to be a key determinant for the receptor binding affinity and host range of influenza B virus.

▼ The magnetic field is the dominant force in the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona. It determines the large-scale structure of the corona, governs the small-scale activity that heats the plasma, and powers energetic transient phenomena. The study of the coronal magnetic field is an important component of efforts to understand the corona as a whole, but the high plasma temperature and relative weakness of the field in the corona preclude direct measurement of the field in this region. Theoretical modeling, therefore, provides critical support to our investigation of the coronal magnetic field. This thesis contains an exploration of magnetic modeling in the context of the physics of the solar atmosphere. Using the novel stereoscopic capability of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, we compare the 3D coronal field structure with various models to study the distribution of the magnetic field and large-scale currents in several active regions. In addition to using existing models, we developed an original modeling approach: using several magnetic dipoles under the solar surface, configured based on comparison with the observed field structure, we overcome certain weaknesses inherent in existing models. The misalignment angles between the vectors of the reconstructed and model fields measure the departure of the model field from the observed field structure, indicating the non-potentiality of the coronal field. The dipole modeling method achieves a significant reduction in misalignment compared with previously established models, implying a closer agreement between our model field and observed field structures. We use the misalignment measurements to examine the free energy contained in active region magnetic fields and find that following major flares, the field relaxes substantially from a high-shear configuration to a low-shear configuration, indicating a significant loss of free energy in the field.
The results in this thesis yield insight into the physics of the solar atmosphere and provide a means to better understand the complex region between the photosphere and corona. Improved understanding of this region will elucidate how the field connects the two regions, and the way in which energy is transported from the convective solar interior into the corona and heliosphere.

▼ Magnetic pair creation, γ [arrow right] e + e - , is a key component in polar cap models of gamma-ray pulsars, and has informed assumptions about the still poorly understood radio emission. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has now detected more than 100 γ-ray pulsars, providing rich information for the interpretation of young energetic pulsars and old millisecond pulsars. Fermi observations have established that the high-energy spectra of most of these pulsars have exponential turnovers in the 1-10 GeV range. These turnovers are too gradual to arise from magnetic pair creation in the strong magnetic fields of pulsar inner magnetospheres, so their energy can be used to provide a physically motivated lower bound to the typical altitude of GeV band emission. This work computes pair creation opacities for photon propagation in neutron star magnetospheres. It explores the constraints that can be placed on the emission location of Fermi γ-rays due to single-photon pair creation transparency below the turnover energy, as well as the limitations of this technique. These altitude bounds are typically in the range of 2-6 neutron star radii for the Fermi pulsar sample, and provide one of the few possible constraints on the emission altitude in radio quiet pulsars that do not possess double-peaked pulse profiles.

▼ The lipid matrix of cell membranes is a natural binding site for amphipathic molecules. Consequently there are water-soluble, amphipathic peptides and proteins that exert their functions on membranes. Studies also showed that binding of amphipathic molecules (such as drugs) may change the functions of membrane proteins by altering the physical properties of the membrane. Thus, we want to understand how amphipathic molecules interact with membranes and find out the consequences of such membrane-molecule interactions. My thesis consists of
development of new methods for studying the kinetics of molecular interactions with membranes and a series of comparative studies on different membrane-active molecules including peptides, proteins and drugs. My contribution to the methods for kinetics is to complement the equilibrium methods already developed in our lab for past twenty years. I established a micropipette aspiration system based on the system developed by Evan Evans in the 80's, but instead of measuring the elastic properties of membranes, we used it to study the dynamic interaction processes between amphipathic molecules and membranes.

▼ This thesis provides a self-contained account of the functorial correspondence between irreducible singular G-monopoles on the product of a circle with a Riemann surface and t-stable meromorphic bundles on the Riemann surface. The main theorem from the work of B. Charbonneau and J. Hurtubise is thus generalized here from unitary to arbitrary compact, connected gauge groups. The required distinctions and similarities for unitary versus arbitrary gauge are clearly outlined and many parallels are drawn for easy transition. Some basic theory involving induced connections on associated bundles is developed for the purpose of describing covariantly constant G-equivariant maps between principal bundles. Several calculations from the references are expanded throughout in order to demystify any uncertainties.Once the main correspondence theorem is complete, the spectral data of our monopoles is provided and the groundwork for a monopole theory on Sasakian manifolds, along with their analogous abelianization is discussed.

▼ Authors of systematic reviews generally analyze the pool of existing studies to generate a conclusion about the target parameter of interest. However, the precision of one's inference will be affected by additional studies yet to appear in the literature. Currently, there does not exist methodology for deciding at what point one's inference would not be substantially changed by additional studies. Stopping rules play a key role in the conduct of clinical trials. They are particularly useful for trials in which the treatment being studied may be detrimental to the subject's health or might appear significantly better than the existing treatment. Ethical considerations would require the treatment be terminated and the superior treatment given to all patients. However, a stopping rule will tell the researcher at what point they can stop the trial and still have reliable results. In this thesis, I extend a Bayesian stopping rule for accumulating patients in clinical trials to meta-analyses, where it is of interest to know when adding more studies will have little influence over the final conclusion. I first consider the case of a fixed-effects meta-analysis and then the more complex case of a random-effects meta-analysis for which I will also consider the different approximation techniques one could use to estimate the marginal likelihood required for a fully Bayesian stopping rule.

▼ In [Dar92], Darmon gave a description of a ``Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer'' type conjecture attached to a modular elliptic curve E defined over the rational numbers and to a quadratic field. A theta object is constructed using Heegner points and cycles for those curves, and can be shown to interpolate special values of L-functions through formulas of Gross-Zagier and Waldspurger. The conjecture relates the "leading coefficient" of this theta object to the arithmetic data of the curve, in particular through a regulator given by a height pairing described by Mazur and Tate in [MT87]. In [Dar92], the leading coefficient for this theta element was calculated numerically for several cases, in particular for the modular curve of conductor 37 and many real quadratic number fields. Our goal is to compute the regulator in those cases in order to verify the conjecture. Along the way, we outline a procedure to calculate the Mazur-Tate height pairing in practice.

In the first part of the current thesis we prove that the fundamental group of a smooth complex projective fourfold with zero Kodaira dimension and non-vanishing holomorphic Euler characteristic is finite. This is a partial resolution of the so-called almost Abelianity conjecture in dimension 4 which predicts that the fundamental group of varieties with zero Kodaira dimension admits an Abelian subgroup of finite index. Our result is a consequence of another theorem where we prove that the Kodiara dimension of coherent subsheaves of the cotangent sheaf of fourfolds with non-negative Kodaira dimension is at most equal to the Kodaira dimension of the variety itself, that is the cotangent sheaf of these varieties is \emph{birationally semistable}. In the second half of this thesis we prove that any smooth family of manifolds with ample canonical bundle over a \emph{special} quasi-projective variety is isotrivial, i.e. there is no variation in the isomorphism classes of the fibers of the family. The special varieties were introduced by Campana as higher dimensional analogues of ℂ and ℂ^*. From this perspective the above result is a resolution of the generalization of the classical conjecture of Shafarevich, settled by Parshin, which anticipated the isotriviality of smooth families of curves of genus g ≥ 2 over ℂ and ℂ^*.

More specifically, we construct over the integers a `metaplectic' stack of elliptic curves and vector bundles \mathcal{V}m\otimes\underline{ω}k/2 over it, k∈ℤ, whose sections over the complex numbers…

The optimal transport problem has found many applications in mathematics and physical sciences, in part due to the importance of the Wasserstein gradient flow. To appreciate this importance, we first introduce the optimal transport problem in the formulations of Monge and Kantorovich and present a numerical approach to the discrete equivalent problem. This numerical procedure is used to visualize optimal transport plans. We then prove the result of Gangbo and McCann that, under standard assumptions, there exists a unique optimal transport plan to problems involving strictly convex cost functions. This background allows us to build the Wasserstein gradient flow from its discretization, the Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme. We use this procedure to justify that the Fokker-Planck equation is the Wasserstein gradient flow of a physical energy functional and conclude by briefly presenting similar applications to other dissipative equations.

Integer least squares (ILS) estimation problems arise from many applications. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of the celebrated LLL reduction and some well-known column permutation strategies on the success probability of the Babai estimators, the widely used suboptimal solutions in practical applications, for both ordinary ILS (OILS) and box-constrained ILS (BILS) estimation problems, and solve a shortest vector problem (SVP) arising in compute-and-forward protocol design. For the OILS estimation problems, we rigorously prove that the success probability P^\sOB of the ordinary Babai estimators can always be improved (not strictly) after the LLL algorithm or its permutation-only version LLL-P is applied and give examples to show that both the V-BLAST and SQRD may decrease P^\sOB. For the BILS estimation problems, on the one hand, we show that under a condition LLL-P always increases the success probability P^\sBB of the box-constrained Babai estimators and argue why both…

In this thesis, I investigate the nested case-control study in the setting of a prevalent cohort study with follow-up, a topic previously not addressed in the literature. In many epidemiologic studies, an initially disease-free cohort is followed with the intention of assessing covariates associated with the onset of a particular disease. For some covariates, logistic constraints on data acquisition and/or costs of laboratory analyses often preclude the possibility of obtaining full covariate information on all participants under follow-up. The nested case-control study is a means of alleviating such difficulties, since at each event time full covariate information is collected only on the subject that fails and on a randomly selected subset of those at risk to fail. Unlike in the current domain of nested case-control studies, the end-point of interest for prevalent cohort survival data will typically be an event following onset rather than onset itself. Such failure times are left-truncated, and…

▼ An interior principal curvature estimate for a class of Weingarten curvature equations is proved. An emphasis is placed on the completeness of the presentation, and accordingly most of the common assertions made in literature when treating the subject are carefully proved as preliminaries. Given a hypersurface in the Euclidean space whose principal curvatures satisfy a Weingarten-type curvature equation, an a priori interior bound for the principal curvatures can be given; that is, the bound is not dependent on the particular form of the solution or its behaviour near the boundary, and only depends on the preset equation in the interior. Afterwards, some theoretical context for the estimate and a discussion of its significance in application are provided.

Enoutre, l'amas inni sera presque sûrement unique
Percolation theory is the study of the behaviour of connected clusters in a randomgraph. Due not only to its contribution in the last ve decades to numerousother elds, most notably materials science, but also to its standing as an interestingtopic in theoretical probability in its own right, it continues to be a thriving areaof mathematics. In this thesis, we discuss one model under the percolation framework, where each point connects to a random number of neighbours, and ask theusual questions of existence and uniqueness of innite clusters. More specically, weconsider a Poisson process X in R^d with density 1. We connect each point in X toits B nearest neighbours, where B is a non-negative integer valued random variable. The parameter in the model is the distribution function of B. We introduce su-cient conditions for B such that for d large enough percolation occurs almost surely.Furthermore the innite cluster will almost surely be unique.

▼ This thesis is designed to study data mining techniques and explore the predictive value of data from the EPA's Green Vehicle Guide which supplies pertinent information regarding environmental performance for each vehicle sold in the United States from 2000 to 2010. Using IBM® SPSS® Modeler to discover patterns most advantageous to statistical analysis of the data set, each vehicle's various variables and scores in relation to emission and air quality and Smart Way status are modeled using two techniques, k-means clustering and the artificial neural networks. Predictions based on analysis of this data set are as expected with all models claiming greenhouse gas scores to be the greatest predictor variable for Smart Way status. Therefore, engineers' and companies' focus on better technology to improve greenhouse gas scores will be essential if Smart Way status and environmental consciousness is a goal.

▼ Monitoring changes in health care performances, financial markets, and industrial processes has recently gained momentum due to increased capability of computers and the availability of real-time data collection and storage software. As a consequence, there has been a growing demand in developing statistically rigorous methodologies for monitoring and change-point detection. In many practical situations, the data being monitored for the purpose of detecting changes, present serial correlations. Hussein (2011) is currently working on a new statistical procedure for monitoring changes in the coefficients of logistic regression model with
AR(
p)-type structure. The objective of this thesis is (a) to use Monte Carlo experiments to evaluate the average stopping times, probability of false alarm, and power of the proposed procedure; (b) to illustrate the usefulness of the method by using an IBM stock transactions data as well as data on rainfall.

▼ Many species of birds produce short vocalizations during nocturnal migration. My thesis uses bioacoustic monitoring of these night flight calls to study bird migration through a southern Great Lakes ecosystem. I deployed recording devices around western Lake Erie during spring and fall migrations. Analysis of thousands of hours of recordings revealed that night flight calls accurately predicted both the magnitude of migration, as well as the timing of migrant passage, as assessed by banding. The first arrival dates for 48 species of migratory birds were significantly earlier on Pelee Island than on mainland Ontario in the spring. More flight calls were detected over Pelee Island than over mainland comparison sites. These results suggest that many birds cross Lake Erie in spring and fall, and that islands are important for migratory birds. This research provides insight into the use of acoustics for monitoring birds in active migration.

▼ Biocomposites have become widely used materials these days. Due to their light weight and ability to be tailored for specific end uses they have gained a considerable ground in the high performance applications, such as aerospace and automobile industry. However, the use of polymers that can be recycled with carbon and other niche fibers renders the composite non-recyclable.
The objective of this present research work was to study the resistance of the Biocomposite and Wood Plastic Composite materials to water. A Biocomposite made up of biopolymer reinforced with switchgrass fibers and a WPC prepared from High density polyethylene reinforced with wood flour fillers were studied for the water absorption behaviour at three different temperatures were evaluated. In addition, density changes, dimensional stability and acoustic properties of the WPC and switchgrss/biopolymer composite were evaluated.

▼ The oxyanions of chlorine (ClOx-, x=1-4) have diverse applications and are used in a variety of commercial products. They are very stable in an aqueous environment leading to water contamination, thereby posing a concern for the environment and human health. At the microbial level, the enzyme perchlorate reductase catalyzes the reduction of perchlorate (ClO4-) to chlorite (ClO2-) and chlorite dismutase further reduces chlorite to innocuous chloride (Cl -) and dioxygen (O2). Two non-heme complexes [Fe III-TAML]- (Tetraamido Macrocyclic Ligand), and [Mn II-(BnTPEN)] in the presence of peracetic acid (PAA) have been studied as catalysts for chlorite dismutation under ambient conditions. Kinetic and mechanistic studies were carried out to study the reactivity of Fe III-TAML and MnII-BnTPEN in the presence of PAA with sodium chlorite in acetate buffer (pH=5.0) at ambient temperatures. The TAML complex has been proposed to catalyze the one-electron oxidation of chlorite to chlorine dioxide (ClO2), as well as the dismutation of chlorite to chloride and dioxygen, after an induction period. The [MnII-BnTPEN] + PAA reaction displayed non-linear characteristics in the form of a long quiescent induction period, followed by the sudden and rapid production of ClO2 in the presence of excess ClO2-. Herein, reaction characteristics of the two non-heme systems have been described, and a reaction mechanism has been proposed. Chlorine dioxide, a pulp bleaching agent and a disinfectant is currently produced at the point of use involving harsh conditions. Hence, the non-heme-chlorite systems offer an inexpensive, mild method to produce ClO2 for industrial applications.
