▼ The thesis proposes that the figurative and extensive use of the ‘mask'—persona, masquerade, disguise, impersonation—provides a crucial literary device for the development and liberation of the expressive potential of Katherine Mansfield and Eileen Chang (1920-1995). Chapter 1, ‘Introduction', elucidates the relationship between mask and language with respect to the writings of Mansfield and Chang by revising John Keats's idea of ‘the chameleon poet', Robert Browning's conception of dramatic monologue, Oscar Wilde's insights into truth and masks, and Ezra Pound's adoptions of ‘personae' in his poetry. The affinities between Mansfield and Chang will be explored by looking at their critical writing as well as criticism on them, revealing their shared awareness of the masks of a person in daily life as well as in fiction and drama. Chapter 2, ‘Katherine Mansfield's Art of Changing Masks', explores how Mansfield's characters switch between three types of masks—speech and the non-verbal, gender, animality—to respond to changes in their situations. Particularly important for this exploration are Joan Rivi re's ‘Womanliness as Masquerade', Michael Goldman's theory of masks in acting, and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's concept of ‘becoming-animal'. Chapter 3, ‘Prosopopoeia: Katherine Mansfield's “special prose” ', considers Mansfield's attempt ‘to bring the dead to life again' in what she calls ‘special prose' as a ‘prosopopoeia', or in Cynthia Chase' phrase, ‘giving a face to a name'. In this chapter I will also trace how Mansfield's work was first translated into Chinese in 1923 by the Chinese poet, Zhimo Xu (1897-1931), which made her one of the most widely-read foreign writers in the Chinese-speaking world. More importantly, I suggest that Xu's use of quotations from Keats and other nineteenth-century poets in portraying Mansfield in his memoir calls our attention to her decisive and still insufficiently examined relationship to poetry. Chapter 4, ‘ “Hiding behind a foreign language”: Eileen Chang's Self-Translation and Masquerade', examines Chang's penchant for translating her fiction and essays from Chinese into English or vice versa. Taking a cue from Pound's view of translations as ‘elaborate masks' and Deleuze's idea of the writer being a ‘foreigner' in their own language, I examine some of the ways in which that the mask of a foreigner / foreign language enables Chang, a bilingual fiction writer and essayist, to gain the emotional and spatial distance from which to reflect on Chinese culture and her personal life. Being inspired by Mansfield and Chang's courage to get away from the notion of writing as self-expression and Dionysus' gift of crossing boundaries through the assistance of the mask, the creative component of the thesis, Chapter 5, consists of 4 short stories. I conclude the thesis with a poem entitled ‘Gifts (for Katherine Mansfield)' and a quick fiction called ‘The Functions of Theory', considering theory and literary terms as a variety of make-up that I apply to the face of my thesis. ▼ Although Rainer Maria Rilke is one of the most widely-read poets in the world and there are mountains of secondary literature on his poetry, his prose works are not given nearly so much attention. The present study is a reading of several of those works, with particular attention given to the role that the senses and creative labor play there. I begin with his "Ur-geräusch" essay (1919), in which Rilke reveals a fascination with the phonograph and a certain jealousy of its abilities. The phonograph provides a model for creative labor, as well as clues about Rilke's thinking on the relationship between this process of creation and the senses. There is an original synesthetic moment when, as a child in his science classroom, Rilke sees the phonograph translating the vibrations received by the horn and carving them into the wax and in turn hears his and the voices of his classmates played back through that horn. This moment in which the senses are blurred together perplexes him and he is left to make sense of this experience for years afterward. With the Geschichten vom lieben Gott (1900), the question turns to the relationship between creative labor and creation as such. The primordiality that was revealed in the sound produced by the phonograph is the subconscious for Rilke, which is our connection to the divine. Although we have been severed from that divine source, we are able to produce it through certain circumstances, viz. through our intersubjective interactions, especially storytelling. We also cultivate it through labor, if we are able to do it: we are stuck in the "Seventh Day," unable to work for the most part, which is the particular plight of Malte Laurids Brigge (1910). He undergoes the necessary transformation to do labor, a certain deconstruction of the self, but is unable to complete the circuit by expressing this change through his works. Auguste Rodin (1903), Rilke's monograph on the sculptor, shows us the ideal artist: able to dig up the tremendous energies of the subconscious and to channel them into great works. ▼ This PhD investigates, through creative and critical practice, how we might apply theories of self-design to understandings and creative representations of the post-punk movement. These theories inform the creative component of this PhD, a novel entitled How I Left The National Grid (hereafter, HILTNG). Through critical and creative practice this thesis will address three questions: 1. What is self-design and how can we historicise it? 2. Why is self-design evident in certain subcultures or cultural moments, particularly post-punk? 3. What can a novel about self-design in post-punk do to address these questions and tell us about identity? To answer these questions, this PhD will consider how to represent people responding artistically to their environment, with a focus upon post-punk urban settings in 1980's Britain. Through creative practice these people will be represented by attempting to recreate that environment in a cultural moment, which, as will become clear, is in many ways linked to the present day. These research questions inform the material aggregated here; in turn, this material seeks to address these questions by considering the perspectives, contexts and positions necessary for answering them. Before proceeding to outline the theoretical framework, I will define 'post-punk'. It is necessary to do this, because this term has been used both to describe music and a repeated cultural moment. The use of this term in popular culture will be explored. This will be followed by a brief exploration of how post-punk music can be distinguished from new wave and industrial music, in order for us to establish key terms. This cultural moment will then be explored as an extension of the punk movement, within the context of post-modernism. This will allow the practices of punk and post-punk to be later understood within a sound theoretical context. The methods and tendencies of post-punk artists will then be investigated, to offer a practical dimension to this theoretical analysis. Considering the cultural and political context of post-punk is necessary in order to establish how a fictional post-punk band could be created in novel form. By so doing, the theoretical materials gathered here can be activated as creative practice. The first question will be directly addressed by then looking exactly at what self-design is. The second question will be explored by examining how self-design has evolved, up to and including the post-punk moment. The third question will then be addressed, by initially investigating how these understandings have been reflected in the novel form. Finally, the focus will turn to the ways in which HILTNG specifically reflected these concerns.

▼ My dissertation, entitled “Prosaic Times: Time as Subject in Wordsworth, Richardson, Flaubert, and Melville,” examines literary works of realism—the artistic claim to represent life as it is—that do not necessarily depend upon the plotline of the story they tell but on the sense of time that their style generates. Most noticeable in the works examined— Wordsworth’s epic blank verse narrative of first-person experience, The Prelude; the first-person, epistolary accounts of experience composing the first “realist” and longest English-language novel, Richardson’s Clarissa, or the History of a Young Lady; Flaubert’s highly stylized representation of substance experienced in the complete absence of style, the experience of the “simple” life narrated in his “Un Coeur Simple;” and the alternately lyric and encyclopedic novel, Moby Dick, or the Whale, an epic in which, narratively speaking, very little happens—is that the plot of these works are unremarkable and out of sync with the extensive and intensive development of the writing involved in their narration. This dissertation claims that the reduced significance placed on plot in these works is counterbalanced by something else: a quality of temporal experience different from linear time. The active quality of language, of what narrative discourse says and does in forming our understanding of real things and events, is brought directly to the reader’s attention in these works. In the natural objects and “scenes” of experience Wordsworth describes; the dense, temporally overlapping exchange of accounts both of purposefully misled, first impressions and disguised, misleading intentions, as well as the disclosure of these over time, composed in “real time” by Richardson’s several epistolary authors; the depiction of the quotidian ways of a village and of a life lived in service of other lives in that village, from the point of view of a subject to whom nothing but the relentless reduction of life happens, by Flaubert; and the boundless occasion for “timeless” metaphysical reflections and physical domain of an elusive, literally unfathomable creature of innumerable 19th-century industrial uses, that the sea represents in Melville, narration not only “takes” but makes time part of the experience it represents. ▼ My poetry portfolio is 75 pages long, and consists of single poems as well as two series. The first series includes the ‘Good Work’ poems, which explore different ideas of ‘good work’ based on characters’ occupations, preoccupations and mental perspectives. The second series is the ‘Makar’ poems, depicting an imagined world in which the poet is a guardian angel or guiding force. The style of my poetry varies from lyric to prose poetry, with a few language-focused abstract poems, and more formal styles, like a villanelle. Dreaming and waking are two themes that reflect aspects of reality and perception. Much of my portfolio is rooted in reflections of identity: Identity in terms of work, and the story we tell to the world about what we do; identity in terms of inter-personal relationships and how those connections form who we become; identity in terms of memory, and the story of who we have been; and identity in terms of the stories we tell ourselves about who we think we are. And if none of those stories align, what kind of fragmented self-identity does that reveal? The narrative poems often use different characters and personas in order to enact these lenses of identity. Even with only a few epistles in the collection, my poetry has been influenced by the epistolary ideas of separation and reunion (as critic Altman describes them: ‘bridge’ and ‘distance’). Similarly, the prose poems often riff on the unification and distancing of various themes, in a mediation of together- and apart-ness. I have used letters and diary-entries as addresses to the audience, and also as invitations for the reader to access the poem through different points of entry. My academic thesis focuses on the utilisation of epistles in contemporary American prose poetry. It is 26,000 words, and is divided into three sections: focused on Epistles: Poems by Mark Jarman; Letters to Kelly Clarkson by Julia Bloch, and The Desires of Letters by Linda Brown; and Dear Editor: Poems by Amy Newman. Why are we still writing poems as letters when we don’t habitually write letters for personal correspondence anymore? The poem-as-letter, or epistle, offers the ability to craft complex relationships within the reader/author, writer/recipient, and open/closed dynamics of intimacy in literature. The criticism is framed within the methodology of reader-response theory, and draws upon examples of epistles in history and literature to connect and establish themes.

L’Histoire des Albigeois, mieux connue sous le nom de mise en prose de la Chanson de la croisade contre les Albigeois, est une œuvre dont la critique littéraire s’est très peu occupée. Le texte, dans sa Rédaction 1 (précédemment Rédaction L), cœur de ce travail, a été transmis par trois témoins qui ont été rédigés entre le XVIe et le XVIIe siècle: P (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, fr. 4975), C (Carpentras, Bibliothèque Municipale Inguimbertine, 1829) qui présente une lacune textuelle que l'on retrouve aussi dans P, et, enfin, T (Toulouse, Bibliothèque Municipale de Toulouse, ms. 608), l’unique témoin complet ; en outre, on connaît aussi une Rédaction 2, transmise par le manuscrit Me, conservé dans le château de Merville : cette rédaction a fait l’objet d’une étude par Dirk Hoekstra en 1998. La Rédaction1, à son tour, contient deux sous-rédactions : la première est la dite Rédaction 1 Longue (ms. P, C) ; la deuxième, c'est-à-dire la Rédaction 1 Brève (T), qui est un dérivé de la première. Celle-ci abrège considérablement le texte en prose, en faisant tomber particulièrement les répétitions superflues (sujets, adjectifs etc.), sans éliminer aucun des éléments nécessaires au bon déroulement du récit. La langue de l’Histoire est l’occitan écrit du XVe siècle, qui présente des influences latines et françaises. Si d’un côté la région de provenance du texte est le Languedoc oriental, plus précisément une zone comprise entre la partie Est du Toulousain, le Quercy, le Rouergue, l’Albigeois et une partie de l’Hérault, le texte présente aussi des traces externes à ce périmètre, renvoyant à la région alpine proche du Piémont, mais aussi à la péninsule ibérique. L’influence linguistique du latin, la référence dans l’incipit au Codex Iuris Civilis, la circulation de la prose dans le milieu des juristes du Parlement de Toulouse (on en trouve des indices dans les notes de possession des manuscrits), l’intention informative qui prévaut sur l’intention littéraire à travers le style adopté : il s’agit là d’une série d’indices qui nous conduit à considérer l’Histoire des Albigeois comme un livre d’histoire, écrit par son auteur anonyme pour ses contemporains à une époque désormais éloignée des faits, un livre dans lequel l’avis sur les protagonistes des événements (croisés, alliés du Midi, clergé) est impartial et ne fait exception que pour Folquet de Marseille, à l’époque évêque de Toulouse et l’ennemi juré des cathares, représenté de manière extrêmement négative.

The Histoire des Albigeois (The Albigesian History), better known as the prosification of the Chanson de la croisade contres les Albigeois, is a text ignored by the literary criticism. In Hoofstuk 1 word enkele hipotetiese uitgangspunte gestel, o.a. dat die woord "grens" in sy wydste betekenis. funksioneer in die kontemporêre Afrikaanse prosa, dat dit verarmend sou wees om 'n "toets" op te stel vir "grensliteratuur" en dat die "grenswerke" veral dit gemeen het dat hulle ‘n strewe verteenwoordig om grense oor te steek of te vernietig. Die doel van die studie is nie om ‘n lys kriteria op te stel vir ‘n klassifikasie van ‘n teks as grensprosa nie, maar eerder om die kompleksiteit aan te toon van die netwerk van betekenisse wat die grens in sy vele verskyningsvorme genereer. In Hoofstuk 2 word gekyk na die begrip "oorlogsliteratuur" en na die invloed van oorlog op die literatuur. Die Britse literatuur van die Tweede Wereldoorlog word as model geneem omdat dit literatuur is wat gebore is uit 'n konvensionele oorlog wat gewen is deur die volk waarvan die skrywers volksgenote is; die oorlogsliteratuur van die Lae Lande word bygereken omdat dit ‘n voorbeeld is van literatuur van mense wat onder die oorlog gely het en die Amerikaanse literatuur oor die Vietnamese oorlog word dan daarmee vergelyk. Laasgenoemde literatuur is gebore uit 'n nie-konvensionele, teen-insurgensieoorlog wat verloor is. Uit die vergelyking word sekere tendense gedistilleer. Daar word ten slotte gekyk na die toestand in Suid-Afrika en raakpunte en verskille met albei oorloë word uitgelig. Hoofstuk 3 ondersoek tekste wat 'n aanloop vorm tot die grensprosa. Dit sluit werke in soos Op pad na die grens, en sekere verhale uit Heupvuur, Roofvis en Skrikbewind van P J Haasbroek, sowel as verhale uit Kortsluitings van Henk Wybenga. Hoofstuk 4 handel oor vyf werke wat aantoonbaar 'n militêre strekking het en sodoende die naaste aan "grensprosa" kom. Hulle is ‘n wêreld sonder grense, ‘n Basis oorkant die grens, Om te awol, Forces favourites en Wie de hel het jou vertel. Hierdie tekste gaan oor personasies wat as dienspligtige soldate, regstreeks met die oorlog te doen het. Inter- en intrapersoonlike konflikte speel hier af teen die gedurig teenwoordige agtergrond van die oorlog. Hoofstuk 5 behandel vier werke, Die laaste Sondag, Die jaar nul, Grensgeval en Jonkmanskas. Waar die grensoorlog in die tekste wat in Hoofstuk 3 bespreek word, altyd na te speur is in die handelinge van die personasies, word die oorlog hier ‘n terloopse gegewe wat aanleiding gegee het tot die meer regstreekse ondersoek van ander grense; dit sluit in interpersoonlike grense en veral die kleurgrens. In Hoofstuk 6 word 'n sintese gemaak deur die inligting wat ingewin is met die teksondersoek in Hoofstukke 3, 4 en 5 te meet aan die tendense wat volgens Hoofstuk 2 by oorlogsliteratuur in die algemeen aangetref word. In die lig hiervan word dan gekyk hoe die begrip "grens" meerduidig funksioneer. ▼ This thesis is comprised of two parts. The primary component is a work of original fiction: the short story collection, The Inland Sea. The stories are accompanied by the critical essay, ‘Liminality, Metamorphic Experience and the Short Story Form’. Both components explore the form that rites of passage and liminality take in the contemporary world. The critical essay projects a related ‘threshold poetics’ of the short story. The Inland Sea explores lives in transitional states, from Argentina to Siberia, from Papua New Guinea to London and New York. The characters populating these stories are adrift in a contemporary world that is fluid and uncertain, where both boundaries and human relationships are shifting. An astronaut struggles to adapt to life back on earth. A young man discovers he is going blind in a foreign city. An aging lothario clings to new routine in a Tokyo hotel. All share in the struggle to maintain a sense of connection and order in the face of disorientating change. The origins of the word metaphor lie in the Greek, ‘metapherein’, to ‘transfer’ (SOED), and embrace doubleness, change and flux. Drawing on Victor Turner’s description of metaphor as ‘liminal monster’, alongside Paul Ricoeur’s study of metaphorical process, ‘Liminality, Metamorphic Experience and the Short Story Form’ proposes that the short story is innately metaphorical, fashioning contradictions characteristic of the liminal or threshold state and deriving power from an accommodation of the ambiguous. The formal charge of the short story, while distinct from poetry and the novel, draws on the narrative and poetic capacities of both: it is an agile, hybrid form combining metaphorical charge with textual strategies such as ellipsis, omission, negation, repetition, and ‘phasing’, as coined by Manuel Aguirre. The short story’s compression, combined with such strategies, makes it adept at challenging the structured or paradigmatic progression of traditional tripartite narrative. As a form it has an ability to promote ongoing metamorphoses, or metamorphic flux. These dynamics of the short form are examined through study of threshold states in the contemporary short story with close textual reference to the less studied, later work of Alice Munro and to the work of Nam Le and David Means which, though widely praised, has had little critical attention. Drawing in particular on the body as a context for liminal states and as a conduit to the psychological and emotional realms, the essay explores the ways threshold tensions shape viscerally charged metamorphic experience as much for the reader as for the protagonists involved. This study aims to offer a counterpoint to unity theories of the short form, and to establish the rich potential for further research into a ‘threshold poetics’ of the short story.

▼ This study is applied research within the field of graphic design. Its focus is the intersection between new media/experimental typographic practice, speech visualisation and oral history. This research emerged from the practice-based investigation of a problematic situation identified within the field, drawing upon the exploration of an appropriate methodology that combines the design practice of the practitionerresearcher and social science methods. The principal aim of this investigation was to identify the attributes and behaviours of dynamic typographic form that may extend the limited visual description of spoken discourse and enhance the possibilities for representation of emotion through prosody within the context of oral history. Experimental typography practices have granted written discourse expressive visual significance, subsuming word into image in print, film and television. Dynamic typography as a computational, responsive and temporal new media form has received less attention, despite offering immediacy and interaction. A naturalistic and reflective methodological approach was taken, encompassing qualitative and quantitative methods. Design practice, oral history, interview-based survey techniques, critical theory and transcription practices all combine as tools in the development of a model and a set of methods for generating dynamic typography as a supplement to transcripts in web-based oral history archives. The King's Cross Voices Oral History Project supplied the majority of the speech extracts that comprised the speech corpus used. Conducting oral history interviews as an interviewer for the project provided not only insights into oral history practice, but also a community of residents to interview and an oral history archive exemplar. The research outcomes are: firstly, the identification of a design process model and a set of methods to generate dynamic typography representations of prosody, providing a template for future use; secondly, the recognition and development of two attributes and behaviours of dynamic typographic form that extend the typographic description of language and enhance the representation of prosody in oral history interviews in webbased archives. This thesis comprises an illustrated text and the set of identified dynamic typography attributes presented on DVD-ROM.
