▼ Relatively few inquiries have been made into the section-ally-derived characteristics of Canadian political parties. The British Columbia Progressive Conservative Party had been exhibiting signs of stress between factions interested in attaining national power and those interested in provincial government objectives. The inquiry, which relied chiefly upon personal interviews and accounts in periodicals, examined the beginnings of partisanship in B.C. provincial politics. Party groups were organized along provincial lines and, when working toward electing federal representatives, they did so wholly under the provincial leader's control. Until the second world war the national party was a confederation of provincial parties loosely linked across the top. As an important force in B.C. the Conservatives died during the early thirties. When national leaders attempted reconstruction, they found provincial Conservatives in a coalition government dominated by the Liberal Party. Even after the second world war ended, the provincial leader refused to break with the Liberals and clung to sole control of a moribund provincial association. Attempts to revivify the association failed and personality clashes between the provincial leader and the national leader's personal representative brought into the open a bitter quarrel between the provincial and federal wings. A new federal party structure institutionalized the division of interests and labour between federal and provincial spheres. Acceptance of the changed structure came with the provincial group's realization of the extent of the damage done by the quarrel. Two groups promote Conservative interests in B.C., the Federal Council and the B.C. Progressive Conservative Association. The Council is the national association's chief agent in B.C. for federal matters although the association is also recognized. The latter group, which is left free to pursue provincial objectives, nominally claims but does not exercise authority in federal work. The leader of each group is not a member of the other group. The provincial leader enjoys much independence, accepts the division and seeks to heal', the rupture. Important power was not vested in the national leader's personal representatives although they performed important services. A survey indicates more co-operation existing at the grass roots level of federal and provincial wings than the leadership quarrels might suggest. Public policy issues have not divided party members, largely because ideology is not too important in the party and because there have been few periods when the party held office simultaneously at Ottawa and Victoria. National Conservative election victories eased financial difficulties for both groups and promoted reconciliation. Federalism in government and the diversity of Canada's major regions decided the organizational character of the Conservative party until about the second world war. ▼ In 1928 the Conservative Party of British Columbia won an impressive electoral victory, taking 35 of the 48 seats in the legislature. The victory was a comeback for Conservatives since after forming consecutive governments during the years 1903-1916, they remained in opposition from 1916-1928. The comeback, however, was not to be permanent. Five years later, in the 1933 election, the Conservative Party met disaster. Not a single candidate running with the Conservative label was elected. Although their fortunes improved in the 1937 and 1941 elections, Conservatives would not again form a government on their own in British Columbia. Throughout the 1940s they shared power in a coalition government, but in so doing the forces were set in motion which culminated in the party's collapse in the early 1950s. The party suffered a massive defeat in the 1953 election, an event which marked the end of the Conservative Party as a serious contender in the province's electoral politics since Conservatives have been unable to make a showing in provincial elections in the 21 years since. What happened to the provincial Conservatives is the question addressed in this study. How did a party which has enjoyed a history of success in both the province's federal and provincial arenas lose, almost entirely, its support base in the early 1950s? The general approach of this study is historical-interpretative. An account and interpretation of the Conservatives' fate is given through a detailed analysis of the party's internal politics. The focus is on politicians (party leaders) and their efforts to build and maintain a party clientele, their definition of goals and the strategies devised to attain them. The major theme which emerges is that the party's ultimate failure to survive as a contender in provincial politics is inextricably bound up with the internal fractionalization that continued to plague it. This study begins by examining the period when the Conservative Party was one of two major parties in British Columbia. The background of this early period is important in understanding the principal actors and political conflicts which set the context for later events. The main body of the study examines the personalities and conflicts in the party during the years 1933-1954. The years of coalition government (1941-1952) are singled out for special treatment because the chain of events precipitated by the coalition ultimately led to the party's disintegration and collapse.

▼ Prior to the passage of the 17th Amendment, senators were selected by state legislators, a measure designed to remove them from fluctuations of popular whim. By 1913, reformers, having assailed members of the Senate as insular to the changing needs of their constituents, pressed for fundamental, structural reform, including direct popular elections. But few works have assessed the nature of senatorial campaigns under the indirect regime. I research contemporaneous newspaper coverage and personal correspondences of individual senators to better glean their levels of sensitivity to re-election pressures — a significant qualitative contribution to the discourse. And I measure the extent to which a state’s political conditions influenced the tendency for senators to engage in public appeals for popular support. Senatorial elections were already pseudo-democratic before 1913, experiencing an emergent element of popular legitimacy as public sentiment meaningfully informed the process and conduits for public accountability were expanding. In stark contrast to prevailing perceptions, senators were keenly sensitive to electoral pressures. By cultivating popular support, they regularly tried to bolster their positions vis-a-vis powerful party leaders, state legislators, and pivotal decision-makers. But the strategy was risky as well, for a poor showing in the November elections invited intra-party challenges. Ultimately, my dissertation tells a story of how parties adapted to changing conditions to remain politically viable and survive in a new age, granting concessions to the electorate which were designed to promote greater popular participation whilst maintaining overall control over the process. The crusade for reforming the senatorial selection method was conducted on behalf of reformers who sought to redress perceived inequalities and dysfunction in the system. Debates over the balance between democratic self-government and the importance of whom Jonathan Rauch term “the middlemen” continue to percolate, colorizing the dispute within the Democratic Party over the role of superdelegates and efforts to abolish the Electoral College. And my research explores the intersection of democratic reforms and racialized politics with the adoption of the invidious “white primary” in South Carolina and the factors which gave rise to the race-baiting, populist demagogue Benjamin Tillman — the precursor to modern-day populists and illiberal democracies. ▼ Unlike many other international instruments, accession to the WTO does not simply require the commitment of the government to sign and ratify the multilateral agreements. A country needs to make considerable legislative and administrative changes to comply with the standards of the WTO and its members to finalize the negotiation for accession. For governments with impure free market economy policy the challenges amplify. The government of Ethiopia publicly pronounces its adherence to the ideology of the developmental state. On the other hand the nucleus of WTO principles is progressive trade liberalization. Therefore, this dissertation tries to provide some reflection on the paradox created as a result of the divergence in priority between WTO principles and developmental state in the context of Ethiopian desire to join the organization. The research is an interdisciplinary work. The issues that will be discussed are not purely legal in their nature. They have legal, political and economic dimensions. And the main focus of the paper is on trade in services and foreign investment negotiation aspect of the accession. Furthermore the objective of the dissertation is to give some insight for policy makers about the challenges and opportunities that „Developmental State‟ ideology will pose in the accession process of Ethiopia to the WTO. The research is divided into five chapters. Chapter one gives introductory remarks about the concept of the developmental state and accession to the WTO. The limitations of the WTO accession process and an overview of the features of developmental state in the world and particularly in Ethiopia are also briefly discussed in the chapter. The origin and concept of developmental state in the world, in Africa and Ethiopia is discussed in some detail under chapter two. The chapter also tries to show the impact of developmental state policies in the laws of the country that are going to be deliberated in the process of accession. Chapter three is about accession to the WTO. In this chapter the requirements, benefits, challenges and procedures of accession are dealt in depth. The writer debates and tries to show the fact that the system is slowly shifting from rule based negotiation to power and precedent based negotiation. By analyzing the laws of Ethiopia that are inspired by the principles of developmental state against the legal and precedent requirements to join the WTO, I tried to correlate the findings of chapter two and three in chapter four. Specific strategies and advises on how to move the negotiation forward on certain areas are also outlined in this chapter. This doctoral dissertation examines the course of the National Progressive Center Union (EPEK), a party that became indissolubly associated with the concept of the political Center, during the period 1949–1953. The paper begins in the post-Liberation period, when a series of issues affecting Greece’s political life were identified, which EPEK then capitalized on, whether positively or negatively; at the same time, the first signs of the emergence of a new political space, the Center, were detected, not only on the level of discourse, but also, primarily, on the level of political practice. The examination of the EPEK begins with the fruitless efforts in 1948 to establish a party, Nikolaos Plastiras’ Progressive Liberal Party, which ended with the creation of the EPEK. The investigation into the party focuses on its internal operation (organization, formation, statutes), its political personnel (MPs and statesmen), its policy during the parliamentary, as well as municipal elections (political program, electoral discourse, partnerships strategy), as well as the party’s internal processes throughout the entire period. All the above are considered in conjunction with the Liberal Party, as these two parties constituted the Center’s mainstay. The concept of the Center permeates the entire dissertation, which documents the convergences as well the divergences between the two parties regarding the political project of the Center, as well as the evolution of this concept during the early post-civil war period.

Η διατριβή εξετάζει την πορεία της Εθνικής Προοδευτικής Ένωσης Κέντρου (ΕΠΕΚ) κατά την περίοδο 1949-1953, ενός κόμματος που συνδέθηκε άρρηκτα με την έννοια του Κέντρου. Η μελέτη εκκινεί από την περίοδο μετά την Απελευθέρωση, οπότε εντοπίζονται μία σειρά από ζητήματα της πολιτικής ζωής της χώρας, τα οποία «κεφαλαιοποίησε» η ΕΠΕΚ είτε θετικά, είτε αρνητικά και παράλληλα ανιχνεύονται οι πρώτες ενδείξεις της εμφάνισης ενός νέου πολιτικού χώρου, του Κέντρου, τόσο σε επίπεδο λόγου αλλά, κυρίως, σε επίπεδο πολιτικής πρακτικής. Η μελέτη της ΕΠΕΚ έχει ως αφετηρία τις ατελέσφορες προσπάθειες ίδρυσης κόμματος το 1948, το Κόμμα Προοδευτικών Φιλελευθέρων του Νικόλαου Πλαστήρα, και τέλος τη συγκρότηση της ΕΠΕΚ. Η μελέτη του κόμματος εστιάζει στην εσωτερική λειτουργία του (οργανωτική, συγκρότηση, καταστατικό), το πολιτικό του προσωπικό (βουλευτές και πολιτευτές), την πολιτική του στις βουλευτικές αλλά και δημοτικές εκλογές (πολιτικό πρόγραμμα, προεκλογικός λόγος, στρατηγική συνεργασιών), αλλά και στις διεργασίες που συντελούνται στο εσωτερικό του κόμματος σε όλη την περίοδο. Όλα τα παραπάνω εξετάζονται εκ παραλλήλου με το Κόμμα Φιλελευθέρων, καθώς τα δύο αυτά κόμματα αποτέλεσαν τον κορμό του Κέντρου. Η έννοια του Κέντρου διαπερνά το σύνολο της διατριβής και αποτυπώνονται οι συγκλίσεις αλλά και αποκλίσεις των δύο κομμάτων γύρω από το πολιτικό πρόταγμα του Κέντρου, καθώς και η μετεξέλιξη της έννοιας αυτής κατά την πρώιμη μετεμφυλιακή περίοδο.

▼ This thesis presents English translations of three pieces of work by the Taiwanese intellectual Wang Tuoh. Wang Tuoh’s works range from short stories and novels to literary criticism, moral essays and newspaper opinion pieces. The exact form of his writings varied according to the political conditions in Taiwan at the time he wrote them. The first piece is Wang’s novella Auntie Jinshui, considered the centrepiece of Wang’s Badouzi series of stories. Wang’s writing was associated with the Nativist school of writers, which was to form part of the first organised cultural opposition to the rule of the authoritarian KMT in Taiwan. The second piece is Wang’s essay “It’s ‘Literature of the Present Reality’, not ‘Nativist’ Literature”, which was written in response to criticism of Nativist writers by KMT supporters. In this essay Wang supplies an important definition of the Nativist school, and broadens the scope of Nativism from being merely of the countryside, to including all of Taiwan’s ‘Present Reality’. The third piece is Wang’s moral essay “Finding the Basis of Success out of the Experience of Failure” which sums up much of Wang’s personal philosophy. In the essay part of the thesis, a description is given of the historical background that lead to the complex society of 1970s Taiwan when Wang began writing. Taiwan’s history as a geographic crossroads between the interests of China, Japan and the West means that Taiwan society, and its intellectuals, can call upon a socio-cultural heritage that draws upon Chinese, Japanese and Western influences in addition to the local Taiwanese culture. Wang’s works are analysed within a conceptual framework that shows how these multiple influences interact within Taiwan’s social, cultural and intellectual worlds. Wang’s roles as writer, literary critic, and moral essayist are all simply aspects of his larger role as an intellectual in Taiwan. In exploring Wang’s biography and relating it to larger historical events, it can be shown that Wang’s writings and his role as an intellectual changed in response to the changing degree of political freedom in Taiwan. The thesis concludes that Wang has consistently regarded his primary role as being an intellectual commentator, and that he has consistently called upon his countrymen to reflect upon the importance of social justice and democracy in Taiwan. Človekove pravice so v moderni dobi na vsak način postale nepogrešljiv del nacionalnega in modernega zavezujočega prava. Vloga države je pri tem večplastna. Tako ni vedno samo zaščitnica temeljnih pravic, ampak tudi mnogokrat glavna kršilka le-teh. Koncept temeljnih pravic se je razvijal skozi tisočletja, predvsem v evropskem prostoru in prostoru iz katerega izhaja evropska kultura. Prve začetke ideje o človekovih pravicah vidimo že v Epu o Gilgamešu, ki predstavlja glavni ep asirsko-babilonske kulture. V 18. in 19. stoletju, se je v zahodni in osrednji Evropi pa tudi v severni Ameriki razvila nova ideologija, ki se imenuje liberalizem. Teoretično postat so liberalizmu oblikovali liberalni filozofi z začetka 18. in 19. stoletja. Glavni predstavniki so John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Charles-Louis Montesquieu, Thomas Pain, Herbert Spencer in drugi. Ameriška in francoska revolucija ob koncu 18. stoletja sta prinesli deklaracije o človekovih pravicah. Te so konceptualno temeljile na načelih dela naravnega prava. Leto 1848 je bilo leto velikih sprememb. Skoraj celotno Evropo je zajelo gibanje, ki si je za glavne cilje zastavilo spremeniti dotedanjo monarhično ureditev, povečati svobodo govora in tiska, ter uvesti med evropske narode večjo nacionalno zavest. Tako so se tudi na Slovenskem pojavile politične skupine, ki so želele sodelovati pri spremembah tistega časa. Politični tabor je bil razdeljen na dve strani: liberalne mladoslovence in konservativne staroslovence. Obe strani sta ob koncu 19. stoletja oblikovali politični stranki in sicer liberalno Narodno napredno stranko, katere glavna predstavnika sta bila Ivan Tavčar in Ivan Hribar ter konservativno Katoliško narodno stranko, kjer je bil na čelu Ivan Šušteršič. Politični vsakdan je bil prežet z ideološkimi boji in polariziranjem. Slovenskemu liberalizmu je bilo vodilno narodnostno načelo, kar je najbolj oteževalo sodelovanje med konservativci in liberalci. Slovenski liberalni tabor se je zavzemal za enakopravnost Slovencev z nemškim prebivalstvom, vendar te enakopravnosti pa ni priznal Judom. A presente dissertação tem como objeto a análise das propostas de política econômica do Partido comunista italiano de 1943 a 1947. O período analisado marca a transição do regime fascista à construção da república democrática e representa a única experiência de governo do partido ao longo de sua história. A partir do debate sobre o capitalismo italiano desenvolvido pelo partido, a pesquisa buscou identificar algumas das razões que originaram o fracasso de sua ação nos governos de unidade nacional num dos períodos que, por outro lado, registrou um forte enraizamento social do partido. Destacou-se, principalmente, o instrumental teórico subjacente à estratégia adoptada pelos comunistas italianos neste período, a democracia progressiva, como instrumento privilegiado para realizar a via italiana ao socialismo, uma alternativa ao processo revolucionário da Rússia de 1917 e ao mesmo tempo não assimilável à tradição da socialdemocracia europeia. Buscou-se detectar os entraves e as aporias teóricas que tal estratégia colocou na atuação governamental do partido, em particular no que diz respeito à elaboração de duas substanciais reformas, agrária e industrial. Identificou-se no moderantismo do partido a incapacidade de formular mantendo-se dentro da teoria marxista, mas ao mesmo tempo afastando-se do socialismo soviético um claro projeto econômico alternativo às propostas e projetos de reformas de tipo keynesiano que no mesmo período outros países europeus experimentavam.

This dissertation focuses the analysis on economic policy proposals of the Italian Communist Party from 1943 to 1947. The sample period marks the transition from the Fascist regime to the construction of a democratic republic and represent the only government experience of the party throughout its history. From the debate about capitalism development by the Italian party, the survey tried to identify some of the reasons that led to the failure of his action in national unity governments in a period, on the other hand, that recorded a strong social roots of the party. The survey highlighted mainly the theoretical tool underlying the strategy adopted by the Italian Communists in this period, the \"progressive democracyäs a privileged instrument to perform the ïtalian way to socialism\", an alternative to the revolutionary process of russian 1917 and at the same time different from the tradition of European social democracy. We attempted to detect obstacles and theoretical aporias that such a strategy put in the party´s performance in the government implementation, in particular with regard to the development of two substantial reforms, the agrarian and industrial ones. The research identified in the \"moderantismop̈arty\'s the inability to formulate in a marxist theory perspective, but at the same time moving away from Soviet socialism - a clear alternative economic project to keynesian proposals and reform projects type that in the same period other European countries were experiencing.

▼ This dissertation analyzes the evolution of the American Democratic Party’s ideological orientation from 1985 to 2014. The central problem is to develop an understanding of how shifts in political-economic context and factional agency combine to produce alterations in the predominant ideology of a U.S. political party. The primary question posed is how the centrist perspective known as the ‘third way’ replaced the left-liberalism of the New Deal and Great Society eras as the guiding public philosophy of the Democratic Party. Whereas many scholars propose that the modern third way revisionism of center-left parties is explained primarily as electoral opportunism or as an adoption of the political logic of the New Right, this study focuses on how changes in political economy (particularly the transition from Keynesianism to neoliberalism) prompted the elaboration of an alternative ideological framework that sought to adapt to new times. In the U.S. case, the primary agent of this process of ideological reorientation was the New Democrat faction, most well-known for its connection to President Bill Clinton. Combining qualitative document analysis and focused interviews with personnel from the think-tanks and policy institutes of the New Democrat faction and its competitors, the dissertation finds that the initiation and maintenance of reorientation is dependent on a faction’s success in elaborating and continually ‘decontesting’ an alternative framework that de-legitimatizes a party’s pre-existing ideological commitments. Adapting Michael Freeden’s approach to the study of ideologies, a conceptual morphology, or map, of third way politics is presented that centers on the particular meanings of opportunity, responsibility, and community elaborated by the New Democrats. These ‘decontested’ concepts signified a commitment to equality of opportunity over egalitarian outcomes, a vision of the welfare state centered on obligation rather than entitlement, and a devotion to communitarian rather than class or identity politics. By analyzing the process of continuous decontestation engaged in by this faction, the dissertation argues that the third way not only constitutes a distinct ideological system, but that it has been the predominant policymaking outlook of the Democratic Party for nearly a quarter century – stretching from Clinton to Obama and possibly beyond. ▼ After the Vietnam War, and particularly since 1986, Vietnam has been internationally recognised as one of the few communist countries to successfully implement a socially-oriented market economy. In the internet age, Vietnam has become one of the most active locations in Asia for the use of information technology. This progress, however, has not been enough to improve the international image of the country’s press, which remains stained by heavy censorship and the tight control of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This study investigates the impact of the internet on the Vietnamese news media and journalists, presenting evidence to show that the internet has brought more than economic benefits to Vietnam. Through the thematic analysis of rich natural data, semi-structured interviews and selected cases, the study shows that the virtual community made possible through the internet provides a mirror that reflects Vietnam’s social crises, gives voice to public feeling and tests the limits of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s leadership and authority. After discussing the failures of the economic reforms on mainstream media, the study highlights the internet’s role in transforming the state-owned press and the online social sphere. The study identifies electronic newspapers as the most progressive media sector and links their rise to the rapid growth of the Vietnamese audience, citizen journalists and the expansion of social networks. Drawing on recent case studies the thesis discusses the cracks that the internet has provoked in Vietnam’s propaganda system. This study offers a picture of the current situation of the Vietnamese news media as it struggles to survive, continually pushing unsuccessfully against the boundaries set by the authorities. The analysis also identifies broader social and political contradictions and divisions in Vietnamese society, illustrating the risks and opportunities facing Vietnam’s contemporary news media and propaganda journalists. This study’s findings provide a timely critique of the roles of the Vietnamese authorities and the news media at a time when the internet is on the way to becoming the ‘Fifth Estate’. The study suggests that both the state news media of Vietnam and the Communist Party of Vietnam’s authorities will need to respond to citizens’ demands for change or face the growing power of information networks. In addition, this thesis reminds readers of the vital role the internet can play in Vietnam because the technology provides the most direct way to give Vietnamese citizens the basic values of freedom and democracy despite the control of the authorities.

▼ By the end of the twentieth century, there were many secessionist groups, but, the move towards Taiwanese secessionism has arguably been the most significant of these. It triggered the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis, which resulted in a historical military confrontation between Mainland China and the US. As will be shown, from 1988 to 2000, Lee Teng-hui, as president of Taiwan, manipulated the political Cross-Straits relationship to promote what was ultimately a secessionist policy. This caused Mainland China to react strongly and triggered sharp tension between Taiwan and Mainland China. This thesis considers what motivated Lee Teng-hui to implement a secessionist Cross-Straits policy and why he supported unification while adopting a substantive secessionist policy. It looks at how he was able to instigate Taiwanese hostility towards Mainlanders, to transform the hostility into a sense of Taiwanese national identity and ultimately into Taiwanese secessionist ideology. A historical approach was used in exploring the origins of secessionism, and descriptive and analytical methods to review systematically and comprehensively political developments in the ROC and its civil war, and to study Lee Teng-hui’s life; the national identity of Taiwan and Mainland China; the implementation of Lee Teng-hui’s political Cross-Straits policy; and the reaction of Mainland China. The study showed that the main cause of Taiwanese secessionism was ethnic conflict between Taiwanese and Mainlanders. It originated from the 228 Incident of 1947, in which Mainlander-led troops slaughtered many Taiwanese. Soon after, the Mainlander-led government fled to Taiwan from Mainland China, and many Taiwanese (including Mainlanders) were killed during the State of Emergency in the 1950s and 1960s. Since the Mainlander-led government fled to Taiwan in its original central government form, the Mainlander élite occupied key positions in the government during the 1950s and 1960s. It resulted in unfair power-sharing for Taiwanese, and caused the Taiwanese élite to believe that they had to establish their own government (nation). Lee Teng-hui had participated in the CCP and had been under political surveillance by the Mainlander-led government for over twenty years. He weathered these political difficulties, but by reasonable inference, there was a close relationship between the political oppression by the Mainlander-led government and his secessionist political Cross-Straits policy. Because Taiwanese residents were indoctrinated by Chiang Ching-kuo and his father, Chiang Kai-shek’s administration for about 40 years, Chinese ideology was dominant and Lee Teng-hui initially paid lip-service to Cross-Strait unification whilst working towards secessionism as reflected in the Chingdao-Lake Incident (1994); the private dialogue between Lee Teng-hui and Shiba Ryotaro (1994); the address at Cornell University (1995); and his two-state theory (1999). ▼ The 1960s and 1970s were an unprecedented period of social activism and protest in Aotearoa New Zealand and many other countries. The thesis traces the development of the two major movements of the time, those against the Vietnam War and apartheid in South Africa, and examines the backgrounds and experiences of a selection of former members of Auckland Progressive Youth Movement (PYM). PYM was an activist group often at the forefront of protests against the war and apartheid, as well as against other local and international injustices. The emerging of the NZ movements has been examined within the framework of prominent theories on the development of social movements. In the process the influences and organisations involved are detailed and examined. The process gives a broad perspective on the growth of the two most significant protest streams in the 1960s and 1970s. It also traces the flow on effect which helped precipitate numerous movements that followed, in the later 1970s and beyond. Central to the study is the question of how young people came to be involved in PYM. The study presents the stories of 25 former PYM members. Fifteen of these are taken from one-to-one interviews and the other ten from participant contributions to a survey. The data shows widely differing backgrounds and influences. The study matches these against the existing theories regarding becoming involved in political activism and also compares specific data with results of USA studies. As part of this investigation, participants have described how they viewed the social, political and economic climate at the time they became involved in PYM, and also why they felt that protest activity was appropriate. The chapter on the latter topic also explores the issue of the efficacy of protest action and the legacy of the 1960s and 1970s movements. Study participants were asked about memorable experiences of their time in PYM, and overwhelmingly responses included issues which I have combined under the title of “repression” (using Boykoff’s (2006) modes of suppression). This category encompasses the actions of police, media and the Security Intelligence Service. The associated literature shows that the Auckland experiences were by no means unique, and also gives explanations for some of these experiences. The issue of differences and conflicts between groups within the movements also featured significantly in the contributions from participants. The study outlines these contributions and uses available literature to explore the historical contexts and roots of these differences in a way that recognises the unavoidable disagreements over fundamental issues but also the potential for cooperation in a common struggle against injustice. The thesis explores participant recollections of issues of race, gender and sexuality in the movement at the time.
