▼ The selective, liquid phase oxidation of p-cymene is an important synthetic route for the production of p-cresol via the tertiary cymene hydroperoxide (TCHP). The industrial-scale oxidation process is characterised by slow oxidation rates due to limitations in the mass transfer of oxidant (gaseous oxygen) into the liquid phase. However, like all other autoxidation reactions, the oxidation reaction is exothermic, following the typical free radical autoxidation reaction mechanism, which implies that careful temperature control is critical in order to prevent the further reaction of the initially formed hydroperoxide species. In the presence of metal catalysts, the limiting oxidation rate is the transfer of oxygen from the gas to liquid boundary interface. As a result, low product yields and poor productivity space-time yield are typically experienced. At high substrate conversions, by-products resulting from the decomposition of the formed hydroperoxides predominate. For this reason, the conversion of substrate is restricted to preserve the TCHP selectivity. The slow rates in industrial-scale p-cymene oxidations results in long oxidation times, typically 8-12 h. Substrate conversions are typically between 15-20 percent, and the TCHP selectivity ranges between 65-70 percent. The work described in this thesis concerns the oxidation of p-cymene in a microstructured falling film reactor (FFMSR). These reactor systems facilitate chemical reactors to have high mass and heat transfer rates because of high surface area-to-volume ratios. Due to their small internal volumes, these reactors are inherently safe to operate. These properties were exploited to improve the p-cymene oxidation rate and, consequently, the space-time yield. In order to evaluate the suitability of vanadium phosphate oxide (VPO) catalysts for use as supported catalyst in the FFMSR, different catalysts prepared from VOHPO4∙0.5H2O and VO(H2PO4)2 precursors was first evaluated for the oxidation of p-cymene in a well-stirred batch reactor. The results of the two activated catalysts, (VO)2P2O7 and VO(PO3)2 when used as powders in their pure form, showed a significant improvement in p-cymene oxidation rates with conversions up to 40 percent in 3-4 h reaction time with a TCHP selectivity of 75-80 percent. The (VO)2P2O7 catalyst showed better oxidation rates and selectivity when compared to the VO(PO3)2 catalyst obtained from the VO(H2PO4)2 precursor. The (VO)2P2O7 catalyst was supported on a stainless steel plate and the coated plate used to study the long-term stability and catalytic perfornance of the catalyst during p-cymene oxidations in a batch reactor. Comparable oxidation rates and TCHP selectivity were obtained with the stainless steel coated VPO catalyst when compared to the “free powder” (VO)2P2O7 catalyst. Η τρέχουσα διαδικασία παραγωγής του π–κυμενίου είναι η κατά Friedel–Crafts αλκυλίωση του τολουολίου με προπυλένιο ή προπανόλη–2, η οποία χρησιμοποιεί μεγάλες ποσότητες επιβλαβών οξέων, προκαλώντας πολλά προβλήματα χειρισμού στους εργαζόμενους με αυτό, προβλήματα διάβρωσης και προβλήματα διάθεσης των παραγόμενων αποβλήτων. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, η Πράσινη Χημεία έχει παρουσιασθεί ως η νέα προσέγγιση της Χημείας για την πρόληψη της μόλυνσης του περιβάλλοντος, καθώς και του σχεδιασμού χημικών προϊόντων και διεργασιών που είναι περισσότερο φιλικά προς το περιβάλλον. Η κατάλυση αποτελεί μία από τις κύριες αρχές, αλλά ταυτόχρονα και εργαλείο της Πράσινης Χημείας. Πιο συγκεκριμένα η ετερογενής κατάλυση, που εξυπηρετεί τους στόχους της Πράσινης Χημείας, λόγω της εξάλειψης της ανάγκης διαχωρισμού του παραγόμενου προϊόντος από τον καταλύτη. Επίσης, μία άλλη βασική παράμετρος της Πράσινης Χημείας είναι η χρήση της βιομάζας, ως ανανεώσιμη πρώτη ύλη, με σκοπό την παραγωγή ενέργειας και χημικών προϊόντων. Στην παρούσα εργασία, μελετάται η δυνατότητα καταλυτικής παραγωγής π–κυμενίου, βασιζόμενη στις αρχές της Πράσινης Χημείας. Για το σκοπό αυτό χρησιμοποιείται ως αντιδρών το α–λεμονένιο, ένα μονοτερπένιο το οποίο αποτελεί ανανεώσιμη πρώτη ύλη, καθώς είναι παραπροϊόν της βιομηχανίας χυμών λεμονιού και πορτοκαλιού, καθώς και της βιομηχανίας χάρτου και πολτού. Πιο αναλυτικά, μελετήθηκε η καταλυτική συμπεριφορά οξειδίων με μεγάλη ειδική επιφάνεια, όπως η SiO2, το MCM–41, ο ζεόλιθος NaY, η γ–Al2O3 και δύο δείγματα TiO2, με διαφορετικές ειδικές επιφάνειες, στην αντίδραση μετατροπής του λεμονενίου προς π–κυμένιο. Επίσης, ερευνήθηκε η επίδραση στη διεργασία τόσο της θερμοκρασίας της αντίδρασης, όσο και της σύστασης της ατμόσφαιρας κάτω από την οποία διεξαγόταν η αντίδραση. Τα πειράματα διεξήχθησαν σε αντιδραστήρα σταθερής κλίνης – ατμοσφαιρικής πίεσης, ενώ για την ανάλυση των λαμβανόμενων προϊόντων χρησιμοποιήθηκε αέριος χρωματογράφος – φασματογράφος μάζας (GC–MS). Από τους καταλύτες που μελετήθηκαν ο πιο αποτελεσματικός αποδείχθηκε η τιτάνια με τη σχετικά μεγάλη ειδική επιφάνεια ακολουθούμενη από την τιτάνια με την χαμηλότερη ειδική επιφάνεια, τον ζεόλιθο NaY και τη γ–Al2O3. Τόσο η σίλικα όσο και το MCM–41 παρουσίασαν μάλλον αμελητέα δραστικότητα. Επίσης, παρατηρήθηκε ότι η απόδοση σε π–κυμένιο αυξανόταν γενικά με τη θερμοκρασία, ενώ δεν επηρεαζόταν πρακτικά από την ατμόσφαιρα που διεξαγόταν η αντίδραση. Τέλος, στους 300 οC και χρησιμοποιώντας την τιτάνια με τη σχετικά μεγάλη ειδική επιφάνεια ως καταλύτη επιτεύχθηκε 90% απόδοση για το π–κυμένιο και 100% μετατροπή για το λεμονένιο. Η αυξημένη απόδοση της τιτάνιας αποδόθηκε σε επιτυχή συγκερασμό ανάμεσα στη σχετικά μεγάλη οξύτητα Brönsted και στη σχετικά εύκολη μεταβολή του λόγου Ti(IV)/Ti(III) κατά τη διάρκεια της αντίδρασης. ▼ The oxidation of cymene with dioxygen has been investigated in some detail with the view of establishing the feasibility of improving the efficiency of the oxidation process. Of particular interest were the rate of cymene oxidation and the selectivity of the oxidation process for the tertiary cymene hydroperoxide, especially at conversions above 15%. In order to be able to evaluate the selectivity of oxidation processes, a reliable method for analysis of the individual hydroperoxides had to be established. Two methods were investigated, namely reduction of the hydroperoxides to alcohols using ferrous sulphate and reduction using triphenylphosphine, and analysing the reduction products by gas chromatography. Of these two methods, the triphenylphosphine method proved to be superior to the ferrous sulphate method and was used as the method of choice for this investigation. A number of oxidation systems were evaluated in an initial screening experiment for the oxidation of p-cymene. The results of this screening experiment showed that three-phase oxidation systems, i.e. systems containing an organic phase, an aqueous phase and gas, gave significantly lower activities than two-phase oxidation systems. In addition, the use of a base in the aqueous layer does not improve the overall selectivity of the oxidation process, but improves the selectivity towards the tertiary hydroperoxide to some extent due to the decomposition and extraction of primary hydroperoxide into the basic aqueous phase. Oxidation systems using a non-autoxidation catalyst, i.e. a catalyst that does not catalyse the conventional autoxidation of organic compounds, gave by far the most promising results. These systems gave both a high selectivity as well as high reaction rate. From the initial screening experiment, and using multi-factorial statistical techniques, two catalyst systems were selected for investigation, namely vanadium phosphate and boron phosphate. The results of these investigations showed that these two catalysts are remarkably active and selective for the oxidation of p-cymene, giving the cymene tertiary hydroperoxide in selectivities exceeding 85% and at substrate conversions as high as 25%. These results are a considerable improvement over currently known oxidation systems and may offer opportunities for further commercial exploitation.

▼ Technetium-99m (99mTc) has emerged as the most widely used radionuclide in medicine and is currently obtained from a 99Mo/99mTc generator system. At present, there are only a handful of ageing reactors worldwide capable of producing large quantities of the parent isotope, 99Mo, and owing to the ever growing shutdown periods for maintenance and repair of these ageing reactors, the reliable supply 99mTc has been compromised in recent years. With an interest in alternative strategies for producing this key medical isotope, this thesis focuses on several technical challenges related to the direct cyclotron production of 99mTc via the 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc reaction. In addition to evaluating the 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc and 100Mo(p,x)99Mo reactions, this work presented the first experimental evaluation of the 100Mo(p,2n)99gTc excitation function in the range of 8–18 MeV. Thick target calculations suggested that large quantities of cyclotron-produced 99mTc may be possible. For example, a 6 hr irradiation at 500 μA with an energy window of 18 to 10 MeV is expected to yield 1.15 TBq of 99mTc. The level of coproduced 99gTc contaminant was found to be on par with the current 99Mo/99mTc generator standard eluted with a 24 hr frequency. Highly enriched 100Mo was required as the target material for 99mTc production and a process for recycling of this expensive material is presented. An 87% recovery yield is reported, including metallic target preparation, irradiation, 99mTc extraction, molybdate isolation, and finally hydrogen reduction to the metal. Further improvements are expected with additional optimization experiments. A method for forming structurally stable metallic molybdenum targets has also been developed. These targets are capable of withstanding more than a kilowatt of beam power and the reliable production and extraction of Curie quantities of 99mTc has been demonstrated. With the end-goal of using the cyclotron-produced 99mTc clinically, the quality of the cyclotron-produced 99mTc has been extensively compared with relevant United States Pharmacopeia (USP) specifications for the existing 99Mo/99mTc production strategy. Additional quality testing, including biodistribution studies of [99mTc]pertechnetate and [99mTc]disofenin in both mice and rabbits was also evaluated. Using the strategies and results presented throughout this dissertation, this thesis concludes with the world’s first cyclotron-based 99mTc patient images obtained as part of a Phase I Clinical Trial at the University of Alberta using [99mTc]pertechnetate.

▼ The alluring order in which complex biological networks exist in nature stimulated the interest of chemists to replicate such systems synthetically. With such examples as the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) double helix and the phospholipid bilayers, the influence of forces within these networks are solely credited for their excellent stability. The synthetically ordered chemical networks are also held together by interactions within them with little or no external force as seen in the natural systems. This spontaneous and reversible association of molecules or ions to form larger, more complex entities according to the intrinsic information contained in the molecules themselves is known as self-assembly. The self-assembly process is pre-eminent to the formation of ordered structures emerging spontaneously from the precursors in which, the overall structure of the final assemblies is controlled by the symmetry of each of the building blocks. The highly ordered and thermodynamically stable scaffolds are formed via non-covalent interactions including hydrophobic interaction, π-stacking, dipole-dipole interaction, ion-dipole interaction, hydrogen bonding, Van der Waals forces, solvophobic interaction and reversible metal-ligand coordination. These non-covalent interactions are termed as supramolecular interactions. Among several of these self-assembly protocols, the directional metal-ligand coordination strategy has evolved to be a well-established process for the preparation of supramolecular ensembles with pre-defined shapes, cavities and functionalities in a “one-pot” synthesis. Coordination-driven self-assembly strategy is governed by the combination of electron-deficient metal centres and electron-rich organic ligands. The outcome of the final supramolecular architecture is determined by the choice of the pre-designed metal acceptor building blocks as well as the flexibility and steric demands of the ancillary organic ligands. Accurate stoichiometry of each of the building blocks is also a very important factor in coordination-driven self-assembly; although serendipity sometimes happen which is quite unexpected. A large number of these self-assembled supramolecular networks have found useful applications in optoelectronics, material chemistry, adsorption, drug delivery, catalysis, host-guest chemistry, photo- and electro-chemical sensing as well as prospective chemotherapeutics. Transition metals are widely desired as electron-deficient building blocks in supramolecular chemistry. They readily accept lone pair of electrons from electron-rich building blocks. The functional properties of these metals have also been considered during the pre-design of these electron acceptors such that the functional property of each metal can be induced in the final architecture. Pd(II) and Pt(II) metals are highly desirable electron acceptors in supramolecular self-assembly because of their rigid square-planar nature. ▼ The linear relationship between a conservative element and salinity during mixing of water masses is widely used to study biogeochemistry in estuaries and the oceans. Even though nutrient ratios are widely used to determine the limiting nutrient in aquatic environments, the rules of nutrient ratios change through the mixing of freshwater and seawater are still unstudied. This study provides general rules for nutrient ratios change via mixing. A simple mixing model is developed with the aims to illustrate that nutrient ratio is a nonlinear function of salinity, thus, shift in limiting nutrient over the salinity gradient can be simply a result of river water and seawater mixing, albeit complicated by biological consumption or remineralization. This model explains a natural phenomenon that rivers contain relatively high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ratios start to decrease the ratios as salinity increases when seawater contains higher SRP:DIN ratios. Although additional sources of P have been implicated as the cause for such change, this change can be a result of riverine water and seawater mixing. Four mixing rules are presented here to explain the factors governing the change in nutrient ratios vs. salinity; thus, answering why in some cases variations in nutrient loading and in other cases mixing triggers changes to seasonal limitation status in some estuaries. Shift in nutrient ratios can be explained by the change in nutrient inventories via mixing. After the P-limited riverine water shifts in N limitation by mixing with N-limited seawater, new production of the estuary in general becomes limited by the amount of N inputs from the riverine water and the seawater. The result may help to explain a current consensus that N and not P riverine loadings lead to eutrophication in estuaries which are influenced by P-limited riverine waters. Further, new production which is generated by N-limited riverine input and N-limited seawater input mainly depends on the amount of N inputs from the riverine water and the seawater. ▼ For the Arid Shrublands of Western Australia (WA) knowledge is limited on what sheep eat and how nutritious their diets are. A study was undertaken on two stations near Yalgoo (28º18’S 116º38’E) in WA, from November 2005 to December 2007. Station 1 (28º39’S 116º18’E) used a flexible rotational grazing management system (RGS), moving 3000-4000 Merino sheep every 3 – 6 weeks through a choice of 20 paddocks. Station 2 (28º18’S 116º42’E) used a flexible continuous grazing management system where small mobs (500 sheep) stayed in paddocks all year, until shearing. Two paddocks on Station 2 were chosen to represent paddocks with high (CGS-G) and low (CGS-P) feed value.A total of 300 Merino hogget (18 months old) ewes were randomly selected from the stations. One hundred and fifty sheep from each station were selected and separated into three mobs of 50 sheep by stratifying live weights. The selected sheep were allocated to either of the two paddocks on Station 2 or the single rotating mob on Station 1. Therefore there were a total of 100 sheep, 50 from each station, on each of the two paddocks on Station 2 and the one rotating mob on Station 1.Throughout the study period sheep live weights, body condition scores (BCS) and wool production were measured and related to plant photosynthetic activity (derived from Normalised Difference Vegetation Index - NDVI), and dietary energy, protein and digestibility (determined from faecal NIRS calibrations). A DNA reference data bank of some common native plant species was established and then used as a library to identify plant species in sheep faeces and thus provide information on variations in diet composition over the study period. Plant nutritional content was also measured and compared to climatic changes and sheep nutrition.Over the study period Merino ewe live weights, wool production, faecal samples and native plant leaf material were collected and analysed from each of the three management treatments (RGS, CGS-G, CGS-P). Wool production measurements included wool length, strength and fibre diameter, including position of breaks, minimum and maximum diameter along the staple of midside samples. Oven dried plant and faecal samples were ground and subsequently analysed for proximate composition. Plant samples were further analysed for mineral contents and 24 h in vitro gas production (GP) using the rumen buffer gas fermentation technique. Organic matter digestibility (OMD) and metabolisable energy (ME) content of the plants were determined using 24 h net gas production. Faecal near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (fNIRS) calibrations, developed by Curtin University of Technology and ChemCentre WA, were used to predict the nutritional attributes of sheep diets.Sheep production was found to be affected by rainfall, seasons, management and differing blood lines. ▼ Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural soils has been identified as one of the major causes of eutrophication of surface waters. This study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of various measures of soil P as indicators of risk potential for P loss from agricultural soils to surface waters. To fulfill the research objective, soil samples were collected from six major soil series in southern Ontario, and were subjected to simulated precipitation and to leaching. Relationships between various soil P measures and dissolved reactive P (DRP) concentration in surface runoff and subsurface flow were assessed. Amongst the selected soil test P (STP) and the estimates of degree of P saturation (DPS), DPSM3-2 [Mehlich-3 P/(Mehlich-3 Al + Fe)], DPSM3-3 (Mehlich-3 P/Mehlich-3 Al), and water extractable P (WEP) had the highest correlation with DRP concentration in surface runoff and leachate across all six soil series. The Fe-oxide coated filter paper P (FeO-P) method gave the second best predictor of DRP concentration through a split-line linear model. The Olsen P test was significantly correlated to DRP losses in runoff and leachate but it was generally not as strongly correlated to DRP losses as were other soil P measures. Given that soil WEP concentration can represent risk of soil P loss, a study with a greater range of soils (n=391) suggested that DPSM3-2 and DPSM3-3 tended to overestimate P losses from alkaline soils, especially when soils had high DPSM3-2 or DPSM3-3. In comparison, soil FeO-P and DPSOl-b [Olsen P/(Olsen P + P sorption index)] each were significantly correlated to DRP concentrations in surface runoff, subsurface water and soil WEP concentration, and showed reasonable accuracy. Compared to STP and routine DPS, a detailed soil DPS estimated from P sorption isotherm (DPSsorp) and P buffering capacity (PBC0), could provide reliable predictions of runoff DRP concentration across different soil types. Within each soil type, runoff DRP concentration increased linearly with increasing DPSsorp following a common slope of approximately 1.79, while the common change point was at a PBC0 value of approximately 0.29 L mg-1. A unit change in the PBC0 value resulted in a much greater change in runoff DRP concentration below the change point than above the change point. ▼ Questa tesi presenta nuova evidenza empirica sulla relazione tra allocazione dei fattori di produzione e differenze di produttivita' tra paesi (primo capitolo) e tra imprese (secondo capitolo). Il primo capitolo analizza la questione degli scarsi movimenti di capitale tra paesi ricchi e paesi poveri (Lucas' paradox). Una calibrazione del modello neoclassico applicata a nuovi dati mostra come, una volta tenuto conto delle differenze nello stock di capitale umano e nella remunerazione del fattore capitale, i rendimenti da capitale fisico sono molti simili tra paesi ricchi e paesi poveri. Il secondo capitolo studia la relazione tra l'allocazione dei fattori fra imprese e la produttivita' totale dei fattori (TFP). In the first chapter I address the issue of small capital flows between rich and poor countries (the so-called Lucas' paradox) observed in data. Applying a calibration approach to new data I show that, taking into account differences in human capital and in the capital share on output, returns to physical capital in rich and poor countries are fairly close. In the second chapter I investigate the relationship between the allocation of factors across firms within a country and TFP. Applying the model proposed by Hsieh and Klenow (2009) to firm level data of Chile and Mexico during 1980s I find that there are less distortions operating on average in the Chilean manufacturing sector with respect to the Mexican one. ▼ Climate change is considered a major threat to freshwater ecosystems through altering biodiversity, structure, and function. Having a thorough understanding of how diverse ecosystems respond to temperature change is vital to ecosystem management and conservation. During summer 2012, I quantified fish biomass, somatic growth, secondary production, and habitat data for fish communities in 25 Appalachian streams from Vermont to North Carolina. Multiple statistical tests were conducted to determine the relationship between community fish production and air and water temperature, species thermal guild production and air and water temperature, and the relationship between community fish production and diversity. Community fish production estimates ranged from 0.15 to 6.79 g m-2 yr-1 and community P/B ratios ranged from 0.21 to 1.07. No significant differences existed between mean community production estimates at the cold-water, cool-water, warm-water, and extreme northern sites (P=0.19), but P/B ratios in the extreme northern streams were statistically higher than mean community P/B in cold- and cool-water streams in the southern Appalachians (P=0.002). Water temperatures had a positive effect on community fish production (P=0.01) while air temperatures did not (P=0.10). Both air and water temperatures were significant in predicting whether community production would be dominated by cold-water or cool-water fish (P=0.001, P<0.0001, respectively). Community fish production was significantly, positively related to species richness (R2=0.38, P=0.001) and was one of the highest correlates of community production (R2=0.52). As climate change alters freshwater ecosystems, fish communities may transform by means of shifting fish abundance, biomass, and production among species ultimately affecting ecosystem structure, function, and biodiversity. ▼ This report is the result of a 20-points project at the University of Jönköping. The project was carried out in form of a case study with the object of analysing the value flow at DIAB AB’s confection department in Laholm. The aim of this project is to submit proposals to the production management on how to increase the efficiency of the production flow at the confection department and reduce the capital accumulation in form of products in work. The information in this report is gathered from interviews, observations and measurements. Furthermore, a literature study was carried out in view to find suitable theories when analysing present as well as future suggested production conditions. This report is based on four main questions: • What does the existing process of the value flow for the most produced product family look like? • How does the process of the value flow for GS perform considering the through-put-time? o How long through-put-time does a representative product of the GS-family have? o How long is the value- and no value adding time for that product along its production flow? • Which production related disturbances and cost prompters exist in the present value flow process? • How could the process of the value flow for GS be made more efficient, less persistent to disturbances and more competitive? The existing process of the value flow for the most producing product family has been mapped and is illustrated in appendix 3. For now, the process includes nine working stations along the production chain. The through-put-time of a representative GS-product is according to my survey 18,5 days. The value adding time is only 16,1 minutes, that is 0,061 % of the entire through-put-time. The remaining time, in other words the no value adding time, is 440 hours and it represents mainly storage and transport of products. The representative production disturbances and cost prompters that characterise the process of the value flow contain material related disturbances, a high number of long shifts, long storage time prior to the customer order point and with that, high capital accumulation and finally unnecessary transports. Improvement proposals aim to increase the efficacy of the process of the value flow and reduce the capital amounts by shifting from the present production strategy involving manufacturing towards order (TMO) to assembling towards order (MMO). In order to make this possible a semi-manufactured storage will be introduced after the standard confection which will represent the new decoupling point. The production at the standard confection will then occur according to the semi-manufactured storage. The standard confection should produce in larger aggregated order quantities based on prognosis in order to benefit from the advantages of economy of scale and the production must proceed in a continuous flow according to the FIFU-system (First In First Out). ▼ Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are among the main edaphic factors that limit crop production in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). As a nitrogen fixing legume, cowpea production is not significantly affected by N, but P deficiency in soils. Two hundred (200) cowpea genotypes composed of both landraces and improved varieties were screened in the field under low P soil conditions in order to (i) determine genetic variability and heritability of traits associated with low P tolerance, (ii) assess the genotype by environment interactions for yield and its components under low P conditions, (iii) identify superior cultivars for use as varieties and/or as parents in improvement programs and (iv) determine the effects of planting date on the cycle and yield of local cowpea varieties in Niger. A participatory rural appraisal (PRA) was conducted to obtain farmers‘ knowledge and perceptions on low soil fertility and preference for cowpea varieties. The PRA results revealed that 11, 49 and 40 % of respondents claimed that their farms are respectively very low, low and high in fertility. About 75 % of farmers indicated that their cowpea production was low. Drought and low soil fertility were identified as the major production constraints. In terms of varietal preferences, early maturity and high yield potential were the traits preferred by farmers. High diversity with regards to yield and yield related traits under low soil P conditions was detected in the evaluated germplasm. High estimates of heritability, genetic variance, phenotypic variance as well as GCV and PCV were obtained in rainy season in comparison to dry season. The mean number of days to flowering, days to 50 % maturity, plant height, fodder yield, harvest index and hundred seed weight were the most highly heritable traits with 92.51 %, 85.02 %, 70.56 %, 80.6 %, 80.72 % and 71.94 % broad-sense heritability estimates, respectively. Grain yield was positively correlated with shoot dry weight, plant height and shoot color ; it was however negatively correlated with days to flowering and days to 50 % maturity. Genotype x Environment interaction was only significant for days to flowering, days to 50 % maturity and University of Ghana http://ugspace.ug.edu.gh iii fodder yield. The contribution of genotypes to the variation was high regarding fodder yield and days to flowering, but medium with regard to grain yield. Genotypes with high grain and fodder yield under low P soil conditions were detected; nevertheless, only G150 was stable across the test environments. The largest contribution of genotypes to traits variation was observed in fodder yield (46.76 %) while the smallest was in shoot dry weight (1.5 %). Genotypes were also responsible for a significant variation with regard to days to flowering (21.57%) as well as grain yield (15.06 %). ▼ Field bioenergy is a form of renewable energy, where plant biomass is used as feedstock in different energy production systems. Field based bioenergy will help to increase renewable energy utilization, which should be 20% of total energy consumption in year 2020 according to the EU regulations. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) are traditional crops with significant dry matter yield potential and they can be used as break crops in conventional crop rotations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the suitability of hemp and maize as feedstock crops in Finland, as well as the varietal differences based on feedstock quality and yield. Field experiment were conducted at the Viikki Experimental farm, University of Helsinki, Finland in 2007 and 2008. Studied traits were dry matter yield, nutrient uptake and feedstock chemical composition, ash, energy and soluble sugar content as well as C/N- and C/P-ratios. Experiments included three hemp cultivars, oilhemp Finola and fibrehemps Chamaeleon and USO 31 and five maize cultivars: Gavot, Campesino, Ronaldino, KXA7211 and KXA7251. Fertilizer rates were 60 N kg/ha for hemp and 120 N kg/ha for maize in 2007 and 210 N kg/ha in 2008. Chamaeleon produced the highest dry matter yield (18 000 DM kg/ha), and the difference to the next one, USO 31 was more than 20 %. Campesino, Gavot and KXA7251 produced the highest dry matter yield (15 500-18 000 DM kg/ha) of maize cultivars studied. Maize dry matter was rich in soluble sugars (177-215 mg/kg DM). Hemp and maize biomass was high in content of different elements and ash. The results indicated that hemp and maize can produce high dry matter yield. However the feedstock quality traits are not ideal for energy. High content of different elements in unprocessed dry matter interferes with the burning and imbalanced C/N- and C/P-ratio biogas production. Based on the results maize can be an excellent option as bioethanol feedstock due to high content of soluble sugars in the dry matter.

In primo luogo, si connette la distinzione tra produttività (productivity) e profittabilità (productiveness) a quella tra il lato della spesa e quello del valore aggiunto dell'economia, vista come un flusso circolare. In secondo luogo, si collegano vari schemi teorici alle strutture empiriche del sistema di contabilità nazionale. Si calcolano quindi sia degli indicatori dei cambiamenti della produttività fisica, utilizzando come unità dell'analisi i subsistemi in crescita, che delle misure del grado di capacità delle singole industrie di generare sovrappiú. Si ottengono ed utilizzano regole di aggregazione e procedure di riduzione al fine di tenere correttamente conto dell'eterogeneità dei mezzi di produzione prodotti. In tutta la tesi, i risultati analitici ottenuti sono corredati da applicazioni empiriche. In larga misura, tale lavoro empirico concerne l'economia italiana (1999-2007); tuttavia, alcuni risultati riguardano un insieme di paesi industrializzati (Germania, Francia, Italia, Giappone, GB e USA) nel decennio 1995-2005. p>This is a study on the notion of productivity, viewed from a Classical perspective. First, the distinction between physical productivity and productiveness (i.e. profitability) is connected to the distinction between the expenditure side and value added side of the economy, seen as a circular flow. Second, a mapping of some theoretical frameworks into empirical structures of the System of National Accounts is advanced. Then, indicators of physical productivity changes with the (growing) subsystem as a unit of analysis are obtained, together with measures reflecting the degree of surplus generating capacity at the level of individual industries. Aggregation rules and reduction procedures are devised and applied to deal with the heterogeneous nature of produced means of production. All throughout the study, empirical applications of the analytical results are provided. ▼ The objective of the present study was the chemotypic determination, spatial distribution and evaluation of carvacrol rich species (genus Origanum, Satureja and Coridothymus) of Ikaria Island. Three extended scientific surveys in Ikaria Island were conducted for three successive years 2008, 2009, 2010. Samples were collected from species of the Lamiaceae family (Satureja thymbra L., Origanum onites L., Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart (syn. O. hirtum Link), Coridothymus capitatus (L.) Reichenb. fil.). Plants were collected when their densities were more than 20% of the total vegetation coverage. Each year, all samples were collected during flowering stage and from the same sites by using Global Positioning System (GPS). In 2008, thirty six (36) samples (4 S. thymbra, 7 O. onites, 12 O. hirtum και 13 C. capitatus) were collected from thirty four (34) sampling stations. In 2009 and 2010, seventy two (72) samples (20 S. thymbra, 18 O. onites, 16 O. hirtum και 18 C. capitatus) were collected from sixty four (64) sampling stations. Each year, essential oil concentration of the four species was evaluated through hydrodistilation. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the essential oil’s compounds was performed with GC-MS. Soil samples from each sampling station were collected in order to determine soil’s classification, organic matter, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), total Nitrogen (N), calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and extractable cations (K⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺). Geographical coordinates (longitude and latitude), altitude, exposure to sunlight and soil properties of the sampling stations were imported into a geographical database using the commercial package GIS ArcMap ver. 9.2. Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the essential oil from plants of each station were imported also in the geographical base. Maps of the distribution of the four species and of the above mentioned characteristics were also produced. In order to evaluate the adaptation of the species in different environments two experimental fields, with eight selected biotypes from all four studied species, were created in November 2008. Οne experimental field was created in Arethousa territory of Ikaria island and the other in the Laboratory of Agronomy in Athens. The eight wild biotypes (two from each species), which were selected based on essential oil concentration and its carvacrol content, were used for creating the plantations. Plants used for the two plantations occurred from the separation of plants from the selected wild biotypes. Randomized complete block design with three replicants for each biotype was used in the two experimental fields. Plants from the fields were collected in 2010 during flowering stage and were analyzed for oil concentration and oil chemical composition. ▼ Įmonėje, kurioje dirbu, buvo pastebėta jog pasitaiko gamybos planavimo klaidų ir nepakankamai išnaudojami turimi ištekliai. Buvo nuspręsta diegti gamybos planavimo sistemą. Buvo rinktasi iš dviejų variantų: įsigyti gamybos planavimo sistemą arba kurtis ją patiems. Buvo iškelti tam tikri reikalavimai, kuriuos turi atitikti ieškoma gamybos planavimo sistema. Taigi, šio darbo tikslas – rasti gamybos planavimo sprendimą, atitinkantį reikalavimus, jį įdiegti ir įvertinti gautus rezultatus. Tikslui pasiekti reikėjo atlikti tokius uždavinius: - Išanalizuoti rinkoje esančias sistemas - Radus tinkamą ją įdiegti įmonėje. Tinkamos neradus susikurti ją patiems. - Palyginti gamybos rodiklius, kuriuos gali įtakoti gamybos planavimo sistema prieš ir po sistemos diegimo. Darbe yra apžvelgtos gamybos planavimo sistemos, jų veikimo principai. Kadangi rinkoje nebuvo rasta visus iškeltus reikalavimus atitinkanti sistema, buvo nuspręsta ją kurtis patiems. Sistema buvo sukurta ir sėkmingai įdiegta. Taip pat buvo išanalizuoti įmonės veiklos rodikliai, kuriuos gali įtakoti gamybos planavimo sistema, prieš ir po gamybos planavimo sistemos diegimo. Įdiegus gamybos planavimo sistemą visiškai išnyko planavimo klaidos, pradėta efektyviau naudoti turimus išteklius, bei sumažintas darbuotojų skaičius planavimo skyriuje nuo 3 iki 1 darbuotojo. p>In my company sometimes appear some mistakes in production planning. Some resources were used in not effective way. There was a decision to install production planning system. There were two opportunities: to buy or to create production planning system. There were some requirements for that system. So the goal was to find production planning system which satisfy all requirements. To realize the goal need to do: - To analyze production planning systems in the market - If found correct system then install it, if not, create production planning system - To compare production indexes before installing production planning system and after that In this article there is comparison of production planning systems in the market. There was not found correct system in the market so decision was to create our own production planning system. The system was created, tested and installed successfully. ▼ The present study examined the effects of apology sincerity and acceptance motivation on the facilitation of forgiveness of a transgression. Eighty-five undergraduates (26 males, 59 females) were randomly assigned to an Accepted Apology or a Rejected Apology condition. Participants wrote a detailed description of a situation in which they had experienced a transgression, the transgressor apologized, and they decided to accept or reject the apology. After completing their written descriptions, participants responded to a series of questions about the incident including their relationship with the transgressor, the time elapsed between the transgression and apology, the method of communication used to issue the apology, what was said during the apology and how serious they initially perceived the transgression to be. To assess apology sincerity, participants were asked to evaluate whether the transgressors: (1) acknowledged what they did was wrong, (2) accepted responsibility for their action, (3) made attempts to atone for the wrongs they had committed, and (4) gave assurances that transgressions would not happen again. To assess the consequences of the transgressions, the participants evaluated the current status of their relationships with their transgressors as well as the extent to which they had completely forgiven their transgressors. Finally, participants wrote a detailed description of their reason for accepting or rejecting the apologies offered by their transgressors. These apology acceptance and apology rejection decisions were coded as either "intrinsically motivated" or "extrinsically motivated" decisions. Four hypotheses were examined. It was predicted that: (1) accepted apologies would be significantly more likely to be characterized as sincere than rejected apologies, (2) sincere apologies would be associated with higher levels of forgiveness than insincere apologies, (3) decisions to accept an apology based on "internal" motivations would be associated with higher levels of forgiveness than decisions to accept an apology based on "external" motivations, and finally (4) the highest levels of forgiveness would be reported in those situations where sincere apologies were given to persons with "internal" motivations for acceptance. The results provided support for Hypothesis 1, but failed to provide support for Hypotheses 2, 3, and 4.
