The objective of this dissertation was to develop an in-situ measurement method for low temperature carbonation (40°C) and novel routes for production of wollastonite (CaSiO3) to improve the cement industry. Carbonation of CaSiO3 as a low-carbon, non-hydraulic cement that reacts with CO2 is a commercially viable technology used to reduce the CO2 emissions attributed to concrete production. Unlike hydraulic cement that strengthens by reaction with H2O, non-hydraulic cement strengthens from CO2 uptake and only uses H2O as a medium for the CaSiO3 carbonation reaction. Growing interest for CaSiO3 cement requires a method to investigate carbonation variables with particular emphasis on the role of H2O in carbonation. An in-situ technique for carbonation and drying quantification of wet-cast CaSiO3 pastes was established using thermogravimetic analysis with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS). While steam production is necessary to elevate humidity and prevent rapid drying in higher temperature carbonation conditions, this measurement method showed that carbonation of CaSiO3 at 40°C can utilize dry, flowing CO2. A method to mathematically deconvolute CO2 mass uptake and H2O mass loss was developed. The effect of pore size reduction and sample densification caused by CaSiO3 carbonation in CO2 had a significant effect on the drying behavior of the cement paste compared to inert drying in N2. Since this measurement was based on mass and humidity, this method should easily scale to large concrete samples.Development of novel, low temperature CaSiO3 production routes was facilitated by Hydrothermal Vapor Synthesis (HVS), a recently discovered technique to crystallize inorganic oxides. HVS is low-pressure variation of hydrothermal solution synthesis that employs an unsaturated steam reaction medium below the water vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) pressure. In this dissertation, HVS chemistry was examined by comparing results from thermodynamic modeling and experimental data. Synthesis of CaSiO3 from abundant minerals other than limestone was demonstrated and the HVS reaction mechanism was postulated. By understanding the thermodynamic barriers of gas-evolving HVS reactions, a semi-batch process was designed to scale CaSiO3 production to >500 g/L/d. Furthermore, this dissertation examines the use of HVS as a pre-treatment process for reducing the energy of hydraulic Portland cement production. In summary, this work indicates HVS could significantly contribute to decreasing the cost, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions inherent to the production of non-hydraulic or hydraulic cement.

▼ High-speed precision tracking is needed in a wide variety of motion control applications ranging from high-speed AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) operation, high-throughput manufacturing, to robotic operations. Challenges still exist in high-speed precision control of systems such as smart actuators with coupled hysteresis and dynamics. Although output tracking has been well-studied for linear systems, tracking with non-periodic tracking-transition switching for non-minimum phase linear systems still remains challenging, especially when multiple control objectives need to be achieved, including smooth transition from one output tracking session to the next one without inducing post-transition oscillations, input energy minimization without saturation under input amplitude constraint, and furthermore, minimization of the overall transition time. Moreover, further difficulties also arise in exploring the advantages of iterative learning control (ILC) in achieving precision but robust output tracking at high-speed to non-repetitive applications with online-generated desired trajectory, particularly for systems with complicated input-output behavior such as Hammerstein systems. The ILC framework can be extended, although for linear systems, to non-periodic output tracking via the superposition principle (SP), where the system response (output) to a linear combination of inputs equals to the same linear combination of the outputs to each individual inputs. Exploring the notion of the SP beyond linear systems is largely limited, as the nonlinearities are difficult to be modeled effectively and accurately. Therefore, challenges still exist in high-speed precision output tracking in emerging applications. In this dissertation, a multi-objective optimal tracking/transition under input constraints for non-periodic tracking/transition switching problem, and a learning-based approach for tracking control of Hammerstein systems are proposed. An approach to extend the previous work on smooth output transition and smooth tracking/transition switching to further achieve minimization of both input-energy and transition time under input amplitude constraints is proposed. The constrained input optimization problem is converted to an unconstrained input minimization problem, and then solved by utilizing an improved conjugate gradient method. The total transition time is further minimized via one dimensional search. The almost superposition of Hammerstein systems (ASHS) is developed, and then exploited for precision control of hysteresis-Hammerstein systems. We showed that for Hammerstein operator satisfying a Lipschitz condition, a weak form of the ASHS – the linear combination of outputs approaches to the response to the linear combination of the corresponding inputs with a different set of combination coefficients – exists when there are enough output elements. ▼ Maize in Zambia is a staple food crop. Its production, however, is threatened by pest damage which causes yield reduction and compromises the grain quality. Stem borers can cause 100% yield loss, however, Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and trap plants have been reported to reduce the damage. Establishment and impact of C. flavipes in Zambia‟s region II and other parts of region I are not known. A combination control method of C. flavipes as parasitoids and trap plants in Zambia is also not adequate. The study was conducted in two agro-ecological zones of Zambia, Lusitu (region I) and the University of Zambia field station (region II) during the 2015/ 2016 agriculture season. The specific objectives were: (1) to assess the parasitism of C. flavipes on stem borers in the traps and maize field of regions I and II; (2) to identify trap plants that can increase natural enemies and reduce stem borer attack in maize fields. Cow candy (Sorghum sudanense), Nutrifeed (Pennisetum spp.) and White Buffalo (Panicum maximum) varieties as trap plants were sown 3 weeks before planting maize (ZM 521 and MMV 409). The three trap plant varieties were sown around the maize, while a control had maize only and planted away from the other treatments. The following parameters were measured on both the open pollinated maize varieties and the trap plants; stem borer density, parasitism, leaf and cob damage, plant damage, maize yield and trap plant establishment. Data was collected at 18, 40 and 60 days after maize emergence. 5 and 10 plants were randomly sampled, destructive sampling method was used and stem borers were collected, reared and identified. The results obtained at UNZA indicated that stem borer attack varied at different treatments. Leaf damage by stem borers was significantly different at 18 DAE (v.r = 5.95; Fpr = 0.01; P<0.05) and 40 DAE (v.r. = 7.15; Fpr = 0.005; P<0.05). At 18 DAE Nutrifeed (mean=1.9a) trap plant was significantly different from the control (mean=2.8) and white buffalo (mean=3.03) but was not significantly different from Cow candy (Sudan grass; mean=2.23. Cow candy was not significantly different from control and White buffalo at 18 DAE, whereas at 40 DAE both Nutrifeed (mean=3.13) and Cow candy (mean=3.47) were significantly different from White buffalo (5.23) but not with the control (mean=4.5). In Lusitu leaf damage was significantly different among the trap plants only at 40 DAE (v.r = 4.9; 3df; Fpr = 0.019; P<0.05) and not at 18 and 60 DAE. UNZA results for borer tunnel length and number of stem borers both indicated significant differences among the trap plants at 40 DAE and not at 18 DAE and 60 DAE. Nutrifeed had the lowest mean number of borers and tunnel length, it was significantly different from White buffalo and control but not with Cow candy which was not significantly different from control and White buffalo. ▼ Kinetic models have been demonstrated to be useful in on-line batch monitoring systems. The ability to monitor a reaction in real time is invaluable to the production process of industrial and pharmaceutical products. However it is not a commonly used technique due to some of its limitations. Currently a great deal of work has been done showing the ability of a kinetic model to accurately estimate the spectral profiles and concentrations of reaction systems as a function of time. Some models have even demonstrated the technique's ability to model the transitions of analytes during dissolution and crystallization processes but little has been done to combine all of these processes into a flexible robust modeling system that incorporates all of these processes simultaneously. The goal of this work is three-fold: (1) to demonstrate the ability of a kinetic model to cohesively model dissolution reaction and crystallization processes (2) accurately predict the spectral and concentration information produced by the reaction system and (3) to accurately model an actual industrial slurry reaction using these same methods. For first part of this work an acetylsalicylic acid synthesis model system was chosen. This synthesis reaction contains all of the processes necessary to produce a cohesive model including dissolution of the salicylic acid reactant simultaneous reaction of the reactants to form the product and side products and subsequent crystallization and precipitation of the product. This work was performed using ATR-UV/Vis measurements to model changes in the solution phase of the reaction mixture and utilized HPLC measurements for validation of the results. The second part of this work used the same techniques seen in part one and extended them to a complex industrial slurry model system. This section of the work was performed using NIR reflectance measurements to model the changes in the solid phase of the reaction mixture. This portion also used HPLC measurements for validation purposes. ▼ This thesis addresses the development of production planning and control system for quality improvement of job shop production. The goal of this research is to identify how a well designed PPC system would improve the entire production system of the company, to identify quality related problem in the job shop production and to find out the cause of excessive defective product in the factory, reveal a systematic procedure of parameter design that affect the quality of products at the design stage, suggest a method to attain capability of Machine tools to achieve the required tolerance, to implement a quality improvement tool in the industry. In this work the researcher had identified and analyzed the cause of the defects in the production of parts made in the factory. To analyze and identify these causes’ quality circle tools were utilized. To identify the problem data collection, brain storming and control charts were utilized. To analyze and prioritize the problems Ishikawa (Fish bone diagram), result of questionnaire, interview, observation, and Pareto diagrams were used. From the responses of the questionnaire researcher had concluded that, a remedy solution should be made by the factory based on the intensity of the problem. The lesson learned from these questionnaire, brain storming, critical observation and structured interviews were used intensively to develop this model were used to develop a PPC model. The developed PPC model consists of three stages pre planning, planning, and, control and it can assist its users in evaluating the strength and weakness of their quality system, targeting their improvement areas, setting up an action plan for improvements and tailoring a special part to the needs of their firms. Thus it can be used to improve the entire production system of the company. Finally a number of recommendations were proposed how to effectively implement the developed model and improve the existing manufacturing activity at HMMBI. ▼ The continuing depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the increasing environmental concerns have encouraged engineers and scientists to look for cleaner alternatives, such as renewable fuels that can reduce the negative impact of conventional fuels. Therefore, biodiesel has become one of the best candidates for the replacement of petroleum-based diesel due to its similarities in properties and performance. One of the pathways to produce biodiesel is the transesterification reaction of triglycerides from vegetable oils and short-chain alcohols (e.g. ethanol or methanol). Two operating modes can be used for production of biodiesel: continuous and batch. In the first part of this research, a comparison between these two processes was studied based on their performance operation and economics. It was found that batch processes can be an attractive option over continuous processes. However, modeling and controlling batch processes is complex due to their dynamic nature and become more challenging while incorporating uncertainties in process parameters. In biodiesel production, one of the most influential uncertainties is the feed composition because the percentage and type of triglycerides vary considerably, therefore, variability in the initial concentration of triglycerides was considered in this work. These uncertainties lead into dynamic uncertainties which can be represented using stochastic differential equations in terms of stochastic processes. In this research, batch production of biodiesel was improved through dynamic optimization also known as optimal control under deterministic and stochastic conditions. This strategy consists of finding a control policy (e.g. reactor temperature) that change with time in order to maximize or minimize a performance index, namely, concentration, reaction time, and profit. Due to the time dependent nature of these processes, optimal designs and control problems involve differential and algebraic equations that can be difficult to solve. In this research, a new methodology that involves the application of NLP techniques, maximum principle as well Ito processes, Ito calculus and the stochastic maximum principle (i.e. stochastic optimal control) was presented for the solution of the proposed problems. ▼ This dissertation is on inventory management and supply chain coordination mechanisms within an economic order quantity framework. Specifically, this research focuses on modeling optimal order policies and coordination mechanisms for a supply chain involving items which experience probabilistic failure during storage. These items are common types of manufactured items which, nonetheless, require specialized order policy considerations due to their unique characteristics. We first develop the solution for the buyer’s problem through the use of an economic order quantity (EOQ) model incorporating item failure. We then proceed to model the manufacturer’s problem through the use of an economic production quantity (EPQ) model. Finally, we consider mechanisms to promote mutually-beneficial cooperation between the supplier and n buyers in service of coordinating the entire supply chain. While prior research has focused on items which can be repaired or sold at a discount upon failure, such models are inappropriate for systems where repair costs exceed or are equivalent to item costs and imperfect items are unacceptable. Examples of industries featuring these inventory conditions include the medical, defense, and electronics industries where defective items are largely useless. First, our EOQ model considers a buyer-supplier relationship featuring delivery and stocking of items which experience probabilistic failure in storage. Thereafter, our EPQ model considers in-house production of such items. Collectively, our EOQ and EPQ models provide methods for developing optimal order policies necessary to achieve practicable supply chain coordination. In order to validate the necessity of the developed models, we include an empirical analysis of item reliability for some common mechanical components used in the defense industry, thereby identifying items which fail in the manner modeled in this dissertation. Having considered optimal order policies for both buyers and suppliers, we next develop an optimal solution for a coordinated supply chain. The proposed solution allows the manufacturer to coordinate a supply chain consisting of n buyers in order to achieve a common replenishment time. Through this optimization framework, we minimize total system-wide costs and derive the cost savings associated with our coordinated solution. Numerical examples are then used to demonstrate the magnitude of cost savings achievable through our coordination framework. We conclude by proposing several mechanisms for leveraging the resulting cost savings to induce mutually-beneficial cooperation between the supplier and multiple buyers. Given the lack of buyer-supplier cooperation noted in empirical research related to supply chain coordination, our identification of specific mechanisms useful for inducing mutually-beneficial cooperation between buyers and suppliers represents an important practical contribution to the supply chain coordination literature. The five studies in this dissertation explored the accurate endpoint force vector production by the human arm in isometric conditions. In the first study, three common-sense hypotheses were proposed and falsified. The subjects exerted static forces on the handle in eight directions. The forces were of different magnitude levels. The torsion moment on the handle (grasp moment) was not specified in the instruction. The two force components and the grasp moment were recorded, and the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint torques were computed. The following main facts were observed: (a) While the grasp moment was not prescribed by the instruction, it was always produced. The moment magnitude increased with force magnitude and moment direction changed with the instructed force direction. (b) The within-trial angular variability of the exerted force vector (angular precision) did not depend on the target force magnitude. (c) The time profiles of joint torques in the trials were always positively correlated, even for the force directions where flexion torque was produced at one joint and extension torque was produced at the other joint. (d) In contrast to the previously studied tasks, the analytical inverse optimization (ANIO) method failed to determine the optimization cost function. A hypothesis was formulated that this is a general property of the static tasks performed by the serial kinematic chains. In the second study, the preceding findings in the first study were confirmed in tasks where arm postures were systematically varied. Further, it was observed that the distribution pattern of endpoint force variability is dependent on the arm posture instead of the orientation of trunk. A following-up simulation was conducted to examine why the pattern of the joint torques distribution could not be explained by an optimization cost function additive with respect to the torques. The results suggested that the grasp capability might serve as the limit to a more optimal pattern of the joint torques distribution. In the third study, handle size was varied to test its effect on performance. Major results indicated: (a) There existed effects of handle size on the magnitude, but not on the distribution pattern of MVC end-point force. (b) Changing the handle diameters in the range between 4.5 and 9.0 cm does not affect the maximal torque production. (c) Although systematic change in the coefficients of ANIO was observed, the method still failed to reconstruct an optimal cost function additive with respect to joint torques with large handle size. In the fourth study, two handles with different surface friction were used to characterize its effects on grasp moment and further on the endpoint force. ▼ A general CNC manufacturing process can be categorized into subtractive manufacturing (SM) and additive manufacturing (AM) based on the manufacturing direction of materials. Even with modern Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) system, it is still a challenging job to formulate a proper process planning of both manufacturing processes owing to the complicated kinematics of machine tools and other physical constraints, such as cutting force threshold of cutters. Given a volume bounded by two freeform surfaces to be manufactured, process planning is to “slice” the volume into segments with one or multiple interface surfaces, each of which will be manufactured sequentially. The research is strived to develop a general interface surface modeling strategy to optimize the process planning of subtractive and additive manufacturing. The tradeoff between time efficiency and finished surface quality is the primary issue in both processes under the conventional layer-by-layer manufacturing paradigm. To alleviate the problem, after a thorough investigation of the characteristics of the two manufacturing processes, multivariate and morphing-based interface surface modeling strategies are proposed respectively catering to two different manufacturing requirements. The multivariate method models the interface surface as a B-spline surface with various control points. The shape of the surface can be easily and flexibly manipulated with the control points. Inspired by morphing technique, the morphing-based method parameterizes interface surface as a geometry metamorphosis between of the two end surfaces of the volume. Then, three different application scenarios utilizing the modeling schemes are presented: process planning optimization concerning both roughing and finishing, optimization of multi-pass machining process, and variable-depth curved layer printing framework. In the attempt to minimize the total machining time of milling process, a two-process planning is considered where a single interface surface slices the whole cut volume into two processes, i.e., roughing and finishing process. The machining time of both processes crucially relies on the shape of interface surface. In the first scenario, the shape of the interface surface left after roughing is optimized subject to the kinematic capacities of the specific machine tool and the deflection cutting force threshold of a ball-end cutter. Following this work, a more general process planning with multiple interface surfaces is presented with the dynamic interface surface modeling scheme. The crux is to find a series of morphing parameters such that the total machining time is minimized. By introducing a layer-wise time indicator, a searching algorithm is implemented to greedily search for the next morphing parameter based on the current one.
