▼ Competence in supply chain management (SCM) is a
key factor for achieving superior business performance. The top 25
companies identified as having excellent competence in SCM in the
annual research reports by AMR Research/Gartner have displayed
substantially higher financial results than their competitors. In
line with this cognizance, human resources are increasingly viewed
as enablers of SCM and a source of sustainable competitive
advantage. There is, however, little consensus on what competence
in SCM consists of, and due to constantly ongoing transformations
in the supply chain, such competence also needs to develop
continuously. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the
overall understanding of competence in SCM, and to explore the
development of such competence at work. In line with the
explorative nature of this research, a qualitative approach is used
to investigate competence and workplace learning in SCM. The
research is based on an interpretative epistemological stance and
consists of three studies: a structured literature review, a case
study, and an in-depth interview study. The case study is based on
practice theory along with shadowing for data collection, while the
in-depth interview study is based on middle-range theorizing and
constructivist learning theory. This research provides a unique
overview of competence in SCM, as well as novel and in-depth
insights into the learning process at work for SC professionals.
The research also offers initial insights into how organizations
can support such competence development. The results on competence
in SCM (based on the structured literature review and the case
study) extend previous knowledge by simultaneously taking an
overall grip to structure the field on a top level, as well as
excavating the details to provide understanding on a deeper level.
The results on workplace learning in SCM (based on the in-depth
interview study) extend previous research that has identified
necessary competences for SC professionals, but has not explained
how they should be achieved, or only focused on formal SCM
education. While prior research stops short of identifying the full
complexity of how workplace learning takes place for SC
professionals, the in-depth interview study delves into
constructive learning process including the full range of
contextual elements that affect learning outcomes. The results also
extend previous research on workplace learning that has been
carried out from an organizational perspective. It does so through
its attempt to identify interventions that can support competence
development for SC professionals. In total, four frameworks and 22
propositions have been developed and presented.

Kayaks originate from the Inuits and is a watercraft that is used for hunting and fishing. Today, kayaks are also used for recreational paddling and this project focuses on producing a material that gives a better understanding of how the ergonomic sitting in a kayak should look. The purpose of the project is to carry it out independently in an engineering way and to present it orally and in writing. The project is carried out using methods such as observations, interviews, questionnaires and searching for facts. It culminates in an information base which can be the basis from which continued work can be carried out. The information has been presented to the end users in the form of a brochure and the conclusion drawn is that the information has been received favourably and that good ergonomic sitting is complex.

The degree project is performed at a dairy company producing dairy products like butter and cheese, who would like to be anonymous in this report. The products they manufacture are sold not only in Sweden, but also in some other Nordic countries. With the growth of the company, they strive for continuous improvements to elevate their production capacity to increased customer demand. In the long term, the company's goal is to simulate the planned major changes to…

▼ Lack of healthcare assistance is one of the issues that European countries such as Sweden face due to the increase of the ageing phenomenon which leads to a higher demand for personnel in hospitals, basic attendance, and housing. Therefore, a tool is clearly required to fulfil these social needs. The thesis focuses on the elderly but especially on those with reduced mobility and develops a wheeled domestic mobile robot whose objective is to deliver their pills at the right time of the day. The main goal is the implementation of automatic drug delivery. The project presents a selection of the most suitable wheel-based robot, and a study and evaluation of different techniques and algorithms used for indoor positioning, navigation, facial recognition, and a communication interface between the patient and the robot. The robot used for the development of this thesis was the TurtleBot3 Burger and was evaluated upon a map created using the Hector SLAM method. Results showed that the Bluetooth technology (iBeacon), as well as the trilateration algorithm, are suitable choices for detecting a human in an indoor environment; a successful average drift error of 0.83 metres was obtained for indoor localization, and further results showed the facial recognition system achieved an accuracy of around 90%. It is concluded that the robot is capable of reaching and identifying the patient in an indoor environment, and so this project can be considered as the first step of implementation of a totally autonomous medical robot ready for domestic use.

Kinnarps is a company that manufactures office furniture and provides workplace solutions for offices and public environments. This project is performed at a manual workstation that packages table legs, this station is responsible for a significant amount of customer complaint costs due to wrong table legs being packaged and sent to the customers. The purpose of this project is to present suggestions for improvement that reduce the risk of packaging errors by using production tools and methods. To achieve the purpose of this project a data collection is to be performed by analyzing historical data and performing observations and interviews. After the data collection the cause of the event is to be found.Theory used to strengthen the choice of methods performed is presented in the theoretical frame of reference. Similar projects have also been studied and are presented in the literature review. The similar projects that were studied can in some way be related to this project and its conclusions. The empirical study was performed by analyzing historical data of the last years customer complaints costs, observations…

The interest of moving towards a more circular economy has increased in many industries and businesses. Several studies have investigated the impact of different products and which processes during their life cycle have an environmental impact. But limited studies of how universities and government authorities can impact their carbon footprint have been done. The goal of this study is to map how KTH Royal Institute of Technology handles procurement, usage and disposal of personal computers and office furniture, in order to identify areas of improvement from an environmental standpoint. Since the study is focused on looking at how KTH works centrally and at one or two schools in various areas, a complete survey of KTH:s organization and management has not been made, but conclusions could still been drawn. By examining previous research, conducting interviews with employees at KTH and studying KTH:s website, we have been able to note that: increased communication, increased formalization of recurring processes and a central warehouse with an associated computer systems could increase KTH:s ability to handle personal computers and office furniture in an environmentally friendly way.

▼ The industry is nowadays going through a transformation in networking technologies which leads to what it is called Industry 4.0. This stage of the industry is arriving from the hand of the internet of things. Having connected all the elements within a factory allows to control and keep track of them telematically. Virtual commissioning is in charge of designing, testing and debugging the system before it is even built. This project tries to approach virtual reality to virtual commissioning and create the virtual model of a human in these simulated environments. Technology allows introducing human interaction for many purposes such as operator training. To do this project properly a methodology will be followed for the design and creation. Once the background, frame of reference and literature review are established, the development can start. The development of the project has taken place alongside Simumatik Open Emulation Platform, consisting of creating the body of a person, as simple as possible, following ergonomics, into this platform for commissioning purposes. The model will be able to interact with the virtual environment like robots, boxes, and sensors. To sum up, the complexity of the model will be limited to the inputs coming from the head and the hands. There exist infinite solutions for which position should be the rest of the body, therefore, this project aims to fix some variables to find valid solutions. Finally, the project achieved building a digital human model in which the main goal was building the arms that are estimated. The model is capable of interact with Simumatik´s environment that has been created specifically to show the functionalities of this project, being detected for sensors and robots of the system.

▼ Nowadays, virtual commissioning has become an incredibly useful technology which has raised its importance hugely in the latest years. Creating virtual automated systems, as similar to reality as possible, to test their behaviour has become into a great tool for avoiding waste of time and cost in the real commissioning stage of any manufacturing system. Currently, lots of virtual automated systems are controlled by different vision tools, however, these tools are not integrated in most of emulation platforms, so it precludes testing the performance of numerous virtual systems. This thesis intends to give a solution to this limitation that nowadays exists for virtual commissioning. The main goal is the creation of a synthetic camera that allows to obtain different types of images inside any virtual automated system in the same way it would have been obtained in a real system. Subsequently, a virtual demonstrator of a robotic cell controlled by computer vision is developed to show the immense opportunities that synthetic camera can open for testing vision systems.

Studien resulterade i två lösningsförslag.
This study is a qualitative case study carried out at Kinnegrip in Lidköping within the automation field. This study is a pilot study for automation carried out with the help of a literature review, interviews and observations. The purpose was to answer what kind of automation solution would be suitable for Kinnegrip's product K20 steel and what measures were required to make the solution possible. The study also examines the waste that Kinnegrip needs to reduce in order for an automation solution to be effective. The result of the waste analysis indicates that Kinnegrip needs to improve existing processes in the press area, before automation of K20 steel is implemented, to avoid process disruptions. This study uses a predefined working methodology that is tailor-made for the case being studied. The study resulted in two solutions. One proposal includes linear robots and the other proposal utilizes a mobile robot solution. The conclusion presents recommendations of actions that Kinnegrip needs to do before automation is performed.

▼ Through this report, the re-design process of a self-balancing robot is described. Different factors affecting the performance of the self-balancing task such as weight and mass centre location are analysed to follow with the design of a new prototype based on lightness and decoupling of components concepts. Furthermore, different control algorithms (PID, LQR and PID + P) are analysed, simulated, and compared between them to recognize the most optimal control system. This theoretical analysis is used as a guideline for the implementation of the control system in the prototype. The instability of an inverted pendulum system is a big issue in terms of controllability. So, simulations are carried out approaching to a more realistic scenario with the development of a non-linear dynamic model of the system via Simulink. Following the path for a more realistic simulation of the control system, controller’s performance is analysed and problems regarding execution time and time variability are identified. Moreover, the lack of information according the use of Raspberry Pi with MATLAB for the control of a self-balancing robot has motivated the definition of a strategy for enabling code programming through MATLAB and consequent code execution in Raspberry Pi microcontroller, clarifying the challenges that this environment drags with and giving solutions to this problem. Finally, with the idea this work could be used as a start-point for future works and use in educational area, conclusions are defined and explained, and future tasks are suggested to enhance the knowledge on this matter.

▼ The purpose of this case study was to provide Kitron AB with information regarding the investment to proceed a new automatic solution to their production facility. To get a better understanding about automation in low volume productions and how it affects the profitability, ergonomics and competence within the company. This case is presented with theory and then evaluated if it will be profitable to proceed with an investment in automation, with several key factors considered. This case was presented by Kitron AB in Torsvik, Jönköping. Kitron designed this real case scenario with a real investment in consideration, to develop an automated process in their production facility where components get magnetized in a machine, which is currently operated manually by an operator. The main factor is to displace the operator from this process and develop a technology solution to save operator-time as well as reduce costs. The theory in this real case scenario is presented by the authors, to help Kitron with information and designing a newer and more efficient process with a robotic solution. The theory has been analyzed and compared to data provided by Kitron; to perceive a better understanding how to develop its existing process and facilitate the workload for Kitron to proceed with this investment. This case is limited to the station where components are magnetized and does not cover other areas in the production facility. Due to high secrecy and respect for Kitorn’s clients and customers, real numbers and names are not presented. In conclusion, the authors discuss profitability, ergonomically aspects, competence and probabilities from a theoretical standpoint. Therefore, the authors concluded a solution and theoretical knowledge to develop such a process. The case was done in a semi-theoretical perspective due to models and methods and could only be fulfilled from distance due to COVID-19.

Rekordverken is a company that specializes in producing bait spreader solutions for combine harvesters. The company's knife production is about to undergo major changes. In connection with this, Rekordverken wants to automate the packaging process of their knives. The knives come to the packaging in cassettes containing 120–200 knives each depending on the model. About 60% of the knives are packaged in ten packs and the remaining 40% are packaged in fifty packs. The company wants a working area with an automated cell without robot that uses compressed air and / or linear units instead.…

▼ Diplomat Dörrar AB is a company that produces doors for the Swedish market. Presently, there is a quality problem within the paint shop, which also happens to be a bottleneck. The quality problems within the paint shop means that roughly 15% of all painted doors are rejected and are forced to be repainted. To repaint a door comes with a large price tag for the company. The purpose of the work is to identify why doors are being rejected, as well as to propose actions to reduce the amount of rejections, to 7.5% This thesis uses different theories connected to quality development and production control. The main theories used in this report are Lean methodology, variation reduction, maintenance and process breakdown. By exploring these theories, it has been possible to propose actions to take in order to reduce rejections to 7.5%. The information and data that has been collected largely comes from interviews with paint shop employees, as well as preexisting data. However, it has become evident that the preexisting data has been flawed when it comes to raw data, which has not allowed the processed data to provide a clear picture. To combat this, new data collecting has been done, which has given a clear picture of which doors have been affected, which colors as well as where on the door the rejection was found. Presently, the most common forms of rejections are paint flaws, plastering flaws and debris. Paint flaws can be categorized in 4 main flaws, running paint, paint drop, bad coverage and craters. The flaws are caused by faults in the paint booth, where a robot paints the door. Plastering flaws occur because of the plastering staff have missed to plaster a flawed door, and debris flaws are caused because debris has been caught underneath the top layer of paint. All these flaws give the doors a visible defect when undergoing inspection. The faults when organized in size by number of total defects are as follows: Paint flaws – 44%, Debris – 24% and plastering flaws – 18%. This yields a total of 86% of the total rejections at Diplotmat Dörrar AB. An investigation has been done to identify the root causes of the chosen rejections. When it comes to paint flaws a few different root causes have been identified that all flaws share. The root cause for paint flaws is that almost all maintenance work is reactive, which leads to satisfactory doors being rejected because of a lack of maintenance work. The root cause for debris is the lack of instructions or responsibility to remove debris, removal of splinters as well as dirty rails in the paint shop. The reason for plastering flaws is due to the fact that there is no standardized working method when it comes to plastering. The actions that are recommended to Diplomat Dörrar AB are as follows: Create a standardized working method on all different stations as well as to implement a working preventative maintenance scheme in order to reduce rejections. Produktvariant Y användes uteslutande under denna simuleringsstudie.
This study was conducted in a manufacturing plant. The plant includes assembly-, machining-, materiel handling-, maintenance- and technical support departments. The main purpose of this study was to create a simulation model of a machining line using the updated software version of FACTS. To implement optimization of the operational objects using SCORE, to compare and evaluate KPI…

▼ Artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning, is a fast-growing research field today. One of its various applications is object recognition, making use of computer vision. The combination of these two technologies leads to the purpose of this thesis. In this project, a system for the identification of different crops and weeds has been developed as an alternative to the system present on the FarmBot company’s robots. This is done by accessing the images through the FarmBot API, using computer vision for image processing, and artificial intelligence for the application of transfer learning to a RCNN that performs the plants identification autonomously. The results obtained show that the system works with an accuracy of 78.10% for the main crop and 53.12% and 44.76% for the two weeds considered. Moreover, the coordinates of the weeds are also given as results. The performance of the resulting system is compared both with similar projects found during research, and with the current version of the FarmBot weed detector. Form a technological perspective, this study presents an alternative to traditional weed detectors in agriculture and open the doors to more intelligent and advanced systems.

This project concerns the product development of a plaster separator, which is being developed together with the company AB Furhoffs Rostfria. The company currently lacks a plaster separator that is part of their own product range, of which they wish to help develop such a product. The plaster separator developed in this project is developed with the user in focus, where physical ergonomics have been integrated throughout the project.During the project feasibility study, several field visits are conducted to observe the user in environments where a plaster separator is installed. Conducting early user studies enables the user's needs to be integrated at the start of the project, which permeate the entire process in the project. From the user studies it was found that there is a need for the plaster separator to also separate more substances, in addition to only the lime-based plaster. These substances include acrylic paint, glue, clay and synthetic plaster. The most central of these substances is the synthetic plaster, which is commonly found in orthopedic operations in the healthcare industry. As a plaster separator that can…

▼ Rototilt is one of the leading companies in the tiltrotator market. Rototilt is based in Vindeln, where the tiltrotators are both developed and manufactured. Rototilt has recently expanded and therefore doubled the size of their production facilities. Among other things this has led to the painting process moving towards a single piece flow of tiltrotators. Rototilt wants to investigate if there's a better order of processing the components of a tiltrotator during the painting process. The goal of this work has been to investigate if a better processing order exists, which led to this thesis work being divided into three parts. To start off, a time study was done to gather process information. Following that simulation software was developed and simulations were made. The final part was analysing the results. The time study had to include several simplifications, mainly due to the large amount of different configuration options Rototilt offers. Due to this, there wasn't enough time to gather enough data. This led to the aim of this thesis work shifting from producing an optimal processing order to developing tools capable of investigating which order is optimal when there is enough data available. The tools developed were a database as well as custom simulation software developed for this project used alongside a model created in ExtendSim. Using the data gathered, the simulations resulted in one processing order showing lower cycle times than the others. Processing the components taking the least amount of processing time first and then the second least and so on resulted in the lowest cycle times. Simulations also showed that current production equipment is capable of higher capacity due to being capable of handling a lower takt time. Due to the large amount of simplifications, it is not recommended to follow the simulation results blindly. The results show that there most likely is an optimal processing order. It also showed that if there is a higher demand and production capacity needs to be increased, investing in new equipment might not be necessary if the utilization of equipment is high enough and downtime is minimized.

▼ The main objective of the project is to identify, study, and understand potential improvements of the Sealing Applicators production line of Ecco Finishing/Carlisle Fluid Technologies Company. The ergonomic cases in the plant, established as working postures, will be analysed using manual methods and virtual simulation tools. The analyses will be based on the measurements and depth of the data that is compiled during the visits to the plant. The software used to perform the ergonomic simulations, Siemens Jack 9.0, also has its limitations for each working posture of the production line, as some data for building the postures is missing due to limitations of the measurement taking process. The final result of the project is set of data that includes a solution implementation of the working postures analysed, also developed with simulations in Siemens Jack 9.0, of the production line, that could improve daily working life of the workers in the plant as well as management of the company. The project results reveal a need to add as well as alter elements of the workstation to make sure that the posture the user performs when working adheres to ergonomic principles.

The company has 93 machine cells that require a manual packaging process performed by operators, which makes Nolato Gota consider an automated processes. The company’s vision is to solve the manual labor using existing robots. The purpose of the degree project is to do a pilot study on a specific machine cell to see the extent to which the operators' work is linked to value-adding work, waste and standardized work as well as how an automation would affect it.By conducting time and frequency studies, the labor of the operators could be analyzed and mapped, which was made in order to interpret the current state of the physical machine cell. A simulation was created to allow for a simpler comparison between the physical machine cell and how it would become if Nolato Gota automated it.The results present all data collections and show how the operators labor relate to waste, 5S, ergonomics and whether a standardized working method is carried out, which creates the current state. The comparison between the simulation and the current state shows what the efficiency of an automation will be. The result of…

▼ Due to the globalization in society, modern habits are having a huge impact on the increment of possible issues that the digestive system may have. Sweden, like many other countries, is dealing with a large demand for endoscopies from people who require an exhaustive control of their issues or who want to prevent a possible intestinal problem. That is why the waiting time for the patients to have an endoscopy is usually too long. When talking about healthcare, it is important to have into account that the subject to process is people and not products. Testing different solutions in order to reduce the waiting list can be complicated because it is necessary to be careful with the process and be sure that what is done is going to work. Due to the difficulty and the risk of making changes while the system is working, the best solution is the use of Discrete Event Simulation (DES), as is it proved to be helpful in the healthcare ambit. One of the key tasks of this project was to analyze the flow of patients and workers in GHP Stockholm Gastro Center. That step provided enough information to have a global understanding of the system and the processes to develop a conceptual model to simulate. Once the translated model was verified and validated, the managers and employees perspectives and bottleneck analysis of the simulation model were taken into account for the elaboration of the different what-if scenarios. The resulting proposed scenarios were tested and a comparison among the results of the translated current state model and the results of the what-if scenarios was done. After that, the possible improvements that could be done in the system were discussed and reported at the end of this project. As a general conclusion, this project shows the potential of discrete event simulation as a tool to help the decision-makers to improve the system and reach their goals. Related to that, being capable of testing new scenarios without disturbing the current behaviour of the system is safer for the clients and also saves resources, time and costs. The conclusions after testing the different what-if scenarios were that the management of the cancellations, the addition of the number of available instruments and to limit as minimum the steps of the procedures that increment the occupation time of the room are a good way to achieve the clinic aim of reducing the waiting time for the patients to have an appointment if implemented together. Nevertheless, the addition of an operational room to process the patients with the largest waiting time is the easier way to improve the system and accomplish the goal.

▼ Simulation is becoming more important nowadays, where there is a need for developing or improving projects more efficiently without taking any economic risk. Jernbro Industrial Services AB in Skövde is specialized in Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) production, and so far, they have been calculating the optimal number of AGVs of a system by using Excel. However, they want to go a step further and include simulation in their projects to obtain this data more accurately and efficiently and update their working procedures. In this thesis, former articles and researches have been studied to acquire knowledge in previous works related to the calculation of the optimal number of AGVs. A market survey has been conducted to find the best software simulation tool in the market for AGVs, by analysing the main features of each software. Although many software satisfies the requirements, FlexSim is the tool that has been chosen, as it provides good results in a user-friendly way. Therefore, in order to validate whether simulation provides accurate and interesting data for the company, an already existing model has been simulated to compare the new results with the former ones calculated with Excel. After discussing the results and the issues that have been confronted during the project, it has been found that the optimal number of AGVs in the system is 3 but, in view of security and the unpredictable behaviour of AGVs systems, 4 is the number considered as the best solution for the model. Moreover, all the benefits of simulation are presented as a solution for future projects the company develops.

▼ The automation level of today’s industries is categorized as high. Some specific areas cannot be fully automated, such as manual assembly operations. Manual assembly stations often require high flexibility due to variation in products and product types, and some operations also require human finesse for conducting the operations. A collaborative robot is produced to facilitate for the worker during operations and tasks, which can be categorized as non-ergonomically and repetitive. The technical specification for the collaborative robots is not yet fully developed, and therefore it might be hard to create a safe work environment. Design and creation is the research strategy used for the project, much due to the aim of creating something physical. The project aims to establish a demonstrator, and introduce a collaborative robot, a UR5 for human-robot collaboration for a manual assembly operations with the ability to work reverse. The fictional workflows implemented in the demonstrator are established with influence from real manual assembly operations and parts included in an engine of a truck. The widgets identified and included in the workflows are created and 3D-printed. The main goal for the project is to establish a collaboration between the worker and the robot and create a baseline for a future safety evaluation conducted on the demonstrator. The project included identification of equipment and widgets necessary, the layout of the demonstrator, workflow establishment for both assembly and disassembly, together with the configuration of the equipment and programming of the collaborative robot. Safety standards concerning robots and collaborative robots, together with the technical specification not yet fully developed, worked as a base during the establishment of the workflow, configuration of the equipment, and programming of the robot. The established workflow can work both for assembly and disassembly. The workflow includes tasks that are performed separately, together, and simultaneous on the same workpiece. Experiments have been conducted on the established workflows, and observations conducted on the tasks performed. Aspects, such as time consumption for individual tasks, risk identification of quasi-static and transient contacts, and gripper position have been included during the observation.

▼ In the fields of automated manufacturing, flexibility has been a long struggle for companies. This factor is profoundly dependable on the demands of the customer in the form of high-quality products, variations, and low-prices, which has a high impact on the manufacturing industry. With the help of an anthropomorphic tool, the flexibility factor in, some extend, be the answer for companies working with robotic automation manufacturing. This thesis aims to investigate what kinds of objects that can be picked and placed, with the help of an anthropomorphic tool, mounted on a collaborative, UR3 robot—thereby evaluating the potential of what an anthropomorphic tool can and cannot pick. Also, investigate pick and place operation with different geometrical shape objects. The project consists of identifying objects that are being picked and placed on a tailormade kitting box located on a conveyor belt. With help from the next station regarding what kinds of objects that are being delivered, a kitting box was designed and created. Stands could then be created for the kitting box and the objects. This was performed with the help of the software Creo Parametric, which was then 3D-printed. A shelf was created to successfully pick objects from, and thereby placing objects into the kitting box. In the thesis, investigation regarding what kinds of objects the tool can pick was performed. This was conducted by picking the objects used for the thesis and everyday objects, such as duct tape, knife, and coffee cup. The experiment consisted of 15 different objects, were different grasping techniques were tested and how much force the tool used. The result of the station as a whole has successfully been created in Assar innovation arena. The an-thropomorphic tool proved to be a concept to conquer the flexibility struggle in the form of success-fully grasping and placing different objects that have different geometrical shapes and weights. With the help of a conveyor, the whole station can also work in reverse mode, by picking objects from the kit-ting box and placing them into the stands, assembled on a shelf.

▼ The manufacturing industry is currently being digitalized to make production more efficient. One of the tools that are being implemented in such industries is Virtual Commissioning (VC). In this context, Jernbro Industries wants to keep up with this trend; they wish to know how feasible it is to perform Virtual Commissioning of their Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). That said, the project aims to investigate and evaluate the feasibility of building and using a virtual model of an AGV for future Virtual Commissioning. A 3-phase process (characterization, creation and emulation) is used following a design and creation methodology. After studying the frame of reference and literature review of this project, the development takes place. This development, which has been done with the Simumatik Open Emulation Platform, consists of examining each AGV’s component, thinking how its operation can be reproduced, building it, integrating it into the same system. Finally, it will be emulated, using the control program that has been written. Some of the conclusions that have been drawn are that the complexity of this kind of system resides in the physics of the device and the level of detail that wants to be achieved. However, creating the functional and visual part of the components is an achievable task besides it is time-consuming.

▼ A comparative study on existing shafts of the paint brush has been carried out within this thesis project. The comparative analysis was performed regarding ergonomics and how the design of the shaft in terms of shape affects the user. By looking at several shafts with different designs, product design can be linked to the user and increase the possibilities for a good working environment through a better tool. A central part of the work is the case study conducted to investigate the target audience using brushes for everyday use, namely the painters. The painters’ grip and movement pattern could be mapped through observation. Movement patterns were analysed in relation to the different shapes on the brushes to study possible relationships between shape and ergonomics. The observation was followed by an evaluation where the painters evaluated the shapes of different brush shafts. The evaluation was carried out by the painters, who were to estimate the different brush shafts as better, equal or worse than the study's reference object. In this way, the subjective experience of the painters could be captured. In order to verify the observed results and to supplement the study with objective measurements, an experiment was also conducted in a movement laboratory. Through the experimental study, differences in the movements of the painter and the amount of muscle activity in the use of the various forms could be recorded. The conclusion reached by the study is that the movement pattern of the painters, in terms of ergonomics, is not affected by the shape of the brush shaft. This is proven by the results from both the observation and the measurements that were made during the motion analysis. Some variation could be seen in the motion analysis, but these deviations were so small that no direct conclusions could be drawn. Neither could the study prove any major differences in the amount of muscle activity between the different forms of the brushes. It may be possible to assume that the muscle of the thumb was activated somewhat more when using one of the brushes. However, this result is uncertain and must be investigated and analysed more thoroughly before any conclusion can be drawn. Regarding the painters’ grips, the observation in the study gave clear answers. Roughly 90% of the time, the painters choose to use the thumb grip when handling the paintbrushes. Despite this lack of difference in both measurement data and observation, the painters themselves felt that the different shapes provided different conditions for better or worse ergonomics. This shows that there is a difference and that the painters themselves can more easily describe this difference than technology or an observer can. One of the brush shafts included in the study was estimated by all painters in the focus group as better than the reference object. Two other brush shafts in the study were estimated, by four out of five painters, to also be better than the reference object. The conclusion is therefore that three of the types of bush shaft studied…

▼ This report is based on a bachelor’s thesis for mechanical engineers at Umeå University, done during the spring of 2019. The thesis is done at the request of and in cooperation with Sanmina SCI-AB in Örnsköldsvik. The purpose of the project is to develop a concept for material presentation that can feed and present material to a collaborative robot that Sanmina has chosen to purchase. The robot and material presentation solution together are supposed to make up a complete automated solution. Along with this, a preferred suggestion should be presented to the layout of the robot cell. An additional request from Sanmina was that the chosen concept should be as simple as possible with regards to electronics such as sensors, motors and the like. To explore the ways which the project could proceed, contact was established with an automated solution company. With recommendations from an expert in the field, the finalized concept could be created. The chosen solution uses gravity to move trays with material down a slope, towards the robot. The sloped surfaces length allows them to function as storage for additional material trays, increasing the time between restocking of material. Additionally, to maximize the amount of different materials each robot can use, the solution can utilize different levels. With more than one level stacked upon the other, the robot can move the material presentation surface to access trays below.

▼ The purpose of this master thesis is to contribute to the reduction of knowledge loss and reinvention inside and between organizations pursuing product development projects in developing countries to ensure growth and improved living standards. Investigation and to determination of existing knowledge sharing and knowledge storing practices in several stakeholders of a product development project in Quelimane, Mozambique will be studied. The involved stakeholders are non-profit and governmental organizations and a group of university students. The product development project involved the design and implementation of an anaerobic digester during the spring of 2018. Collaborations between some of the stakeholders started in 2015 and will exceed the project duration. Mixed research methods were used, and open-ended question interviews were conducted for the qualitative data collection. The data was analyzed by coding to find common patterns and relationships. A literature review and desk research were made to obtain detailed information about knowledge management and other related subjects. Results showed that all organizations involved in the product development process experienced at least one barrier to knowledge transfer related to their position as a nonprofit organization pursuing product development in a developing country. The definition of a knowledge management strategy is as important for non-profit organizations as it is for for-profit organizations, but the current methods for choosing a strategy need to be modified in order to fit the overall strategy of such organizations. The implementation of a knowledge management strategy and suitable knowledge management methods and activities could contribute to the reduction of knowledge loss and reinvention inside and between organizations pursuing product development projects in developing countries to ensure growth and improved living standards.

▼ This paper presents a design optimisation of a mechanism used to lift and turn heavy objects, in this case, a specific gear that weights 3000 kg. The objective pursued during the development of the project was to reduce the weight of the mechanism, and thus, make it more cost-efficient, as well as to improve the clamping system to secure that the heavy objects are safely handled. The method followed was to first identify the critical parts in cooperation with the client. Then, the corresponding analysis has been developed for each of those parts, by minimising the mass of two of them, and by selecting and dimensioning the guideways for the clamping motion in the other case. The key results obtained from these analyses were that the weight of one of the parts was reduced by 50 %, the clamping system was improved and that the stress analysis shows that the maximum stress is far below acceptable levels. Hence, it is concluded that it was possible to optimise the mechanism and reduce the weight, improving the handling of heavy objects.
