A migração de processos é importante em programas MPI por vários motivos, tais como permitir re-escalonamento de processos, balanceamento de cargas e tolerância a falhas. Independentemente do tipo do uso da migração, conhecer o custo imposto pela realização desta operação é um problema pertinente. Quando utiliza-se migração para tentar diminuir o tempo de execução de uma aplicação paralela, este custo passa a ser um ponto crítico. Existem algumas soluções para migração de processos em programas MPI disponíveis atualmente. No entanto, ainda não existe um estudo que quantifique o custo destas migrações. Nesse contexto, este trabalho apresenta um estudo para modelar e dimensionar o custo de migração de processos em programasMPI. Primeiramente, o trabalho identificou, analisou, avaliou e, quando necessário, adaptou as principais soluções disponíveis atualmente para migrar processos MPI. Com base nessas soluções, foram criados modelos de custo que poderão ser utilizado para estimar dinamicamente os custos de migração e auxiliar na tomada de decisão em algoritmos de escalonamento. Osmodelos criados foram utilizados para estimar os custos demigração emaplicações paralelas e o resultado foi comparado comos custos demigração reais. Nesta comparação, os valores previsto ficaram bastante próximos dos valores observados no experimento, demonstrando a qualidade das previsões dos modelos propostos.

Process migration is essential for MPI programs for different reasons, such as processes rescheduling, load balancing and fault tolerance. Knowing well the cost necessary for this operation is a pertinent problem, regardless of the type of migration use. Whenever migration is used for improving the performance of parallel applications, its cost becomes a deciding point. Nowadays, there are some solutions to process migration available for MPI programs. However, there is not a study that can quantify the migration cost and its impact on the execution of MPI programs. In this context, this work presents a study for modeling and dimensioning the process migration cost in MPI programs. First, we identified, analyzed, evaluated and, when needed, adapted the main solutions which are presently available to migrate MPI processes. Based in these solutions, we defined cost models. These models can be used to dynamically estimate the migration costs and to guide scheduling decisions. These models were used to predict the migration cost in parallel applications and the result was compared to observed migration costs. In this comparison, the predicted values were very similar to those observed in the experiment. This work still shows an evaluation about the impact of a migration in the execution of real parallel applications in order to verifying the viability of applying this approach to improve the performance.

▼ The vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) is arranged into exquisitely organized strata from a diverse collection of neuronal types. The zebrafish retina is a well-established model for studying the vertebrate CNS because it can be readily accessed during development and directly imaged. All main retinal cell types are derived from multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs), whose clonal sizes and compositions are stochastically determined. However, the biological processes that contribute to the stochastic cell fate decision making of RPCs remain largely unexplored. Another major hallmark of neural development is the oscillatory movement of nuclei between the apical and basal surfaces of the neuroepithelium during the process of interkinetic nuclear migration (IKNM). The precise role of IKNM in creating the organized diversity of neuronal tissues is the topic of continued and vigorous investigation. Therefore, we employed long-term, rapid imaging of whole zebrafish retinas during early stages of development to reveal the physical processes that govern the behavior of nuclei during IKNM and their contribution to variability in fate decision making of RPCs. We opti- mized the use of light sheet and two-photon microscopy techniques to image the developing zebrafish retina at a high temporal resolution over long time periods. These images made the raw material for production of reliable tracks of nuclear movements and division during early retinogenesis, for many tightly packed nuclei, using automated tracking software and manual curation. Subsequently, these tracks were used to create a model of retinal IKNM as a diffusive process across a nuclear concentration gradient generated by the addition of new nuclei at the apical surface. This analytical model is based on the observed stochastic basal movements of the nuclei during IKNM and produces a diffusion constant in line with those previously reported in the literature. Therefore, based on crowding of nuclei at the apical surface and a nuclear concentration gradient along the apicobasal axis, it provides a reasonable quantitative explanation for the stochastic distribution of nuclei across the retina. Furthermore, analysis of nuclear migration and cell fate determination imply a significant contribution of nuclear position and time spent near the basal surface on cell fate choices. These results suggest that IKNM may stochastically distribute nuclei across the retina whose positions, in turn, affect their fate choices.

Este trabalho apresenta o projeto e a implementação da política de escalonamento com suporte à migração de processos JUMP. A migração de processos é uma ferramenta importante que complementa a alocação inicial realizada pela política de escalonamento em um ambiente paralelo distribuído, permitindo um balanceamento de carga dinâmico e mais refinado, resultando em um melhor desempenho do ambiente e menor tempo de resposta das aplicações paralelas distribuídas. A nova política unifica a alocação inicial e migração de processos em um único algoritmo, de forma a compartilhar decisões para o objetivo comum de prover um melhor desempenho para aplicações de uso intensivo de processamento em clusters heterogêneos. A política é implementada sobre o ambiente de escalonamento flexível e dinâmico AMIGO, adaptado para o suporte à migração de processos. A avaliação de desempenho mostrou que a nova política oferece ganhos expressivos nos tempos de resposta quando comparada às outras duas políticas de escalonamento implementadas no AMIGO, em quase todos os cenários, para diversas aplicações e diversas situações de carga do ambiente

This work presents the project and implementation of the scheduling policy with process migration support JUMP. Process migration is an important tool that complements the initial placement performed by the scheduling policy in a distributed parallel environment, allowing for dynamic and more refined load balancing, resulting in better performance of the environment and shorter response time for distributed parallel applications. The new policy unifies initial placement and process migration in a single algorithm, enabling the sharing of decisions for the common goal of providing a better performance for CPU-bound applications in heterogeneous clusters. The policy is implemented over the dynamical and flexible environment AMIGO, adapted in order to support process migration. Performance evaluation showed that the new policy offers expressive gains in response times when compared to other two scheduling policies implemented in AMIGO in almost all scenarios, for different applications and different environment load situations

Software as a Service (SaaS) är en metod för att leverera mjukvara där lösningen är centralt lagrad och erbjuden som en tjänst. SaaS erbjuder flera olika fördelar ur både den tekniska och den kommerciella synvinkeln. Som en konsekvens av det är många företag mycket motiverade att flytta sina föråldrade system till SaaS för att fortsätta vara konkurrenskraftiga på marknaden. Tyvärr så är sådana stora migreringar ofta utmanande och problematiska, SaaS lägger till ännu fler utmaningar till den problematiken. Den här studien föreslår en effektiv processmodell för SaaS-migrering när systemen som ska migreras till SaaS är föråldrade. Den föreslagna modellen siktar på att guida SaaS-migreringsprojektet i rätt riktning och därmed utöka sannolikheten för att det skall lyckas. Kvalitativa metoder har använts för att utveckla och validera modellen. Den initiala modellen utvecklades från experimentiell kunskap i kombination med att studera och analysera relevant arbete i området. Modellen modifierades iterativt ytterligare genom att konsultera både akademiska och industri-experter med relaterad bakgrund. Slutligen så valdes experted på ämnet ut och öppna intervjuer genomfördes för att validera modellen. Resultaten från intervjuerna föreslår att den föreslagna process-modellen är väl anpassad för att appliceras i industrin och förväntas kunna hjälpa en organisation att genomföra SaaS-migreringsprojekt effektivt och framgångsrikt.

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software delivery method in which software is centrally hosted and offered as a commodity. SaaS provides numerous advantages both from technical and business perspective. Hence, many companies are highly motivated to move their legacy systems to the SaaS in order to stay competitive in the market. However, any migration of legacy systems is usually challenging and failure prone. SaaS migration adds more challenges on top of that. This thesis proposes an effective SaaS migration process model for migrating legacy application to SaaS. Proposed process model aims to guide the SaaS migration projects in the right direction and thus increase the success rate. Qualitative method was used to develop and validate our model. The initial SaaS migration process model was developed from experimental knowledge in combination with studying and analysing relevant work in this field. The model was further modified in iteration by consulting both academic and industry experts with related background. Finally, experts were selected on the subject matter and conducted structured open-ended interviews to validate the model. The interview results suggest that the proposed process model is well suited to be applied in industry and is largely expected to help an organization to drive the SaaS migration project effectively and successfully.

▼ Les déplacements cellulaires, collectifs ou individuels, sont essentiels pour assurer des fonctions fondamentales de l'organisme (réponse immunitaire, morphogenèse), mais jouent également un rôle crucial dans le développement de certaines pathologies (invasion métastatique).Les processus cellulaires à l'origine du déplacement forment une activité complexe, auto-organisée et fortement multi-échelle en temps mais aussi en espace. Mettre en évidence des principes généraux de la migration est donc un enjeu majeur. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons à la construction de modèles de migration individuelle qui prennent en compte ce caractère multi-échelle de manière minimale.Dans une première partie, nous nous intéressons à des modèles particulaires. Nous décrivons des processus intracellulaires clés de la migration de manière discrète au moyen de processus de population. Puis, par une renormalisation en grand nombre d'individus, taille infinitésimale et dynamique accélérée, nous obtenons des équations de dynamique continue et stochastique, permettant de faire le lien entre la dynamique intracellulaire et le déplacement macroscopique.Nous nous confrontons d'abord à la situation d'un leucocyte se déplaçant dans une artère, et développant des liaisons de différentes natures avec les molécules de la paroi, jusqu'à éventuellement s'arrêter. La dynamique de formation de liaisons est décrite par un processus stochastique de type Naissance et Mort avec Immigration. Ces liaisons correspondent à des forces de résistance au mouvement. Nous obtenons explicitement le temps d'arrêt moyen de la cellule.Puis, nous nous intéressons à la reptation cellulaire, qui se produit grâce à la formation d'excroissances au bord de la cellule, appelées protrusions, qui avancent sur le substrat et exercent des forces de traction. Nous modélisons cette dynamique au moyen d'un processus de population structurée par l'orientation de la protrusion. Le modèle continu limite obtenu peut être étudié pour la migration 1D, et donne lieu à une équation de Fokker-Planck sur la distribution de probabilité de la population de protrusion. Cette thèse initiée en octobre 2013 s’attache à comprendre en quoi les événements politiques survenus en Égypte entre 2011 et 2016 ont pu peser sur les trajectoires individuelles et les registres de l'action collective des Égyptiens installés en France. À partir d'une sociologie des migrations égyptiennes en France, ce travail ambitionne plus largement de comprendre comment un événement peut influencer les trajectoires individuelles de ceux qui n'en sont pas directement témoins. Inscrit à la croisée d'une sociologie des migrations et d'une sociologie de l'action collective, ce travail interroge le poids et les rôles des mobilisations à distance. L'enquête de terrain multisituée (durant laquelle des entretiens et des observations ont été menés dans les villes de Paris, de Marseille, mais aussi dans plusieurs localités égyptiennes), inscrit ce travail dans la lignée des travaux portant sur les formes de politisation par l'événement et contribue aux études sur la participation politique à distance.

Initiated in October 2013, this thesis aims at understanding how the 2011 and 2016 political events that occurred in Egypt may have weighed on both individual trajectories and collective action registers of the Egyptians living in France, more specifically in Paris and Marseilles. Starting from a sociology of Egyptian migrations in France, this work more broadly aims at understanding how an event can influence the individual trajectories of those who are not first-hand witnesses. At the crossroads of a sociology of migration and a sociology of collective action, this work questions the weight and roles of remote mobilizations. The multi-site field survey (during which interviews and observations were conducted in Paris, Marseilles, and several Egyptian localities), inscribes this work in line with works on forms of politicization by the event and contributes to studies on long distance political participation.

▼ There is a range of feed materials available for the production of Ti02 pigment. These range from natural materials like ilmenite and rutile to synthetic materials like synthetic rutile. There is a large increase in the price of titaniferous feed materials as the Ti02content of the material increases. To take advantage of the difference in price between chloride grade slag and natural rutile a process was developed to increase the Ti02 content of chloride grade slag from ~85% to more than 95%. This beneficiated titania slag product (BTS) should be ideal as feed material to the chloride pigment process. Initially several processes were evaluated. Particular emphasis was placed on the slag pre-treatment procedure. This was necessary as impurities could only be leached with difficulty from as-cast slag. A suitable pre-treatment procedure would render the impurities easily leachable, while the titanium is retained in an insoluble form. The results indicated that a process consisting of oxidation and reduction roasting would satisfy these requirements. Detailed process development was then undertaken on this process. The first phase of the process development was conducted in a coal fired fluid bed roaster. This allowed a set of semi optimised process parameters to be established, but the highest Ti02 content that could be achieved was 94%. A second stage of process development was under taken under more controlled conditions, using a small fluid bed reactor connected to a gas mixing system. Based on the results in this phase of the process development a new set of optimum process parameters was established. They are oxidation at 850°C for 1.5 h in an atmosphere containing 8% O2; reduction at 850°C for 10 min in a 100% CO atmosphere and leaching in boiling 20% hydrochloric acid for 12 h. Under these conditions it was possible to produce BTS containing > 97% Ti02. During oxidation of titania slag several important morphological changes occur. These are the conversion of the original M305 phase in the slag to a mixture of rutile/anatase, hematite and ferric M305. In the process the iron in the slag migrates to the outside surfaces of the slag particles where it is easily accessible during leaching. The iron containing phases are converted to ilmenite during reduction and during leaching the ilmenite is removed. This yields the BTS product. As the oxidation roast appeared to be a very important of the BTS process it was decided to investigate the mechanism of titania slag oxidation. A mechanism based on the nucleation energy that is required to form the relevant phases during oxidation was proposed. This mechanism was tentatively confirmed through selected experiments. ▼ There is a range of feed materials available for the production of Ti02 pigment. These range from natural materials like ilmenite and rutile to synthetic materials like synthetic rutile. There is a large increase in the price of titaniferous feed materials as the Ti02content of the material increases. To take advantage of the difference in price between chloride grade slag and natural rutile a process was developed to increase the Ti02 content of chloride grade slag from ~85% to more than 95%. This beneficiated titania slag product (BTS) should be ideal as feed material to the chloride pigment process. Initially several processes were evaluated. Particular emphasis was placed on the slag pre-treatment procedure. This was necessary as impurities could only be leached with difficulty from as-cast slag. A suitable pre-treatment procedure would render the impurities easily leachable, while the titanium is retained in an insoluble form. The results indicated that a process consisting of oxidation and reduction roasting would satisfy these requirements. Detailed process development was then undertaken on this process. The first phase of the process development was conducted in a coal fired fluid bed roaster. This allowed a set of semi optimised process parameters to be established, but the highest Ti02 content that could be achieved was 94%. A second stage of process development was under taken under more controlled conditions, using a small fluid bed reactor connected to a gas mixing system. Based on the results in this phase of the process development a new set of optimum process parameters was established. They are oxidation at 850°C for 1.5 h in an atmosphere containing 8% O2; reduction at 850°C for 10 min in a 100% CO atmosphere and leaching in boiling 20% hydrochloric acid for 12 h. Under these conditions it was possible to produce BTS containing > 97% Ti02. During oxidation of titania slag several important morphological changes occur. These are the conversion of the original M305 phase in the slag to a mixture of rutile/anatase, hematite and ferric M305. In the process the iron in the slag migrates to the outside surfaces of the slag particles where it is easily accessible during leaching. The iron containing phases are converted to ilmenite during reduction and during leaching the ilmenite is removed. This yields the BTS product. As the oxidation roast appeared to be a very important of the BTS process it was decided to investigate the mechanism of titania slag oxidation. A mechanism based on the nucleation energy that is required to form the relevant phases during oxidation was proposed. This mechanism was tentatively confirmed through selected experiments. ▼ Thanks to advances in genome sequencing, empirical patterns of within- and between-species genetic variation are readily available. By studying these patterns much has been learned about the evolutionary histories of species. But the causes and consequences of different evolutionary histories are still difficult to tell apart. To this end, comparative analyses of genetic variation under different models are required. This thesis analyses genetic variation under specific models that are relevant for a number of biological species. Firstly, this thesis discusses a method for inferring the population-size history of the population in question using simulated, as well as empirically observed frequency spectra of mutations. The method performs well when applied to simulated data, provided that a large number of mutations is sampled. However the estimation based on empirical data is biased. Secondly, the thesis studies a mainland-island colonisation model. The model allows for different levels of multiple paternity in the population. Multiple paternity promotes genetic variation. This effect is much larger during colonisation than on the long run. Therefore, multiple paternity may facilitate the establishment of species in new areas. Thirdly, this thesis analyses a colonisation model for species that reproduce both sexually and asexually, and have limited dispersal capabilities. Due to limited dispersal capabilities, sexual reproduction may be hindered locally, especially during colonisation. Unless the individuals are highly sexual, a few clones establish the front of the colonisation forming wide clonal colonies. Finally, this thesis analyses a joint effect of migration, selection and random genetic drift during adaptation in subpopulations subject to different environments. When divergent adaptation is driven by mutations, the frequency at which mutations appear, as well as how strongly they are selected for are the decisive parameters for whether or not subpopulations can adapt to their respective environments despite migration and drift. This remains to be analysed further.

▼ The articles in this volume address the question: How do social determinants structure the health and well-being of the Aboriginal population in Canada? The first article uses bivariate statistical tests to assess whether First Nations residents’ subjective assessments of personal and community well-being correspond to scores from the Community Well-Being (CWB) Index, which is a measure of socioeconomic conditions in the community. The second article uses path analysis to test the extent to which the stress process model explains the social distribution of psychological distress and well-being in the off-reserve Aboriginal population. Specifically, it investigates whether stress, mastery, and social support mediate the pathways between social status and mental health outcomes. The results of these two chapters suggest that education is an important determinant of well-being. The final two chapters explore potential barriers to higher educational attainment. The third article uses multinomial logistic regression to assess whether intergenerational exposure to residential schools patterns educational attainment across three cohorts of First Nations adults. The fourth chapter uses churn theory to examine whether mobility patterns affect educational attainment among Aboriginal adolescents and young adults living off-reserve. Collectively, the articles presented here support the contention that the health and well-being of the Aboriginal population is tied to, although not solely determined by, their social and economic positions. CWB scores were significantly associated with residents’ perceptions of their own and community’s well-being. Stress, mastery, and social support are mediators between social status and mental health; however, it appears that specific social statuses are more strongly associated with specific mediators. In terms of educational attainment, there was no clear patterning based on intergenerational proximity or density of residenial school exposure. The results suggest that exposure alone is a poor predictor. Patterns of migration were associated with educational attainment in both cohorts. Generally, it appears that frequent moves are associated with higher odds of dropping out or falling behind in high school. However, having never moved is associated with lower odds of attending post-secondary.

Ce travail de thèse se propose d’analyser la question identitaire dans un corpus de films d’Afrique des années 2000. Echappant à la définition monolithique du "cinéma africain" comme genre à part, ces récits de fiction transnationaux reflètent la pluralité des appartenances culturelles des cinéastes. À partir de la notion de paraphrase, théorisée par Jean-Pierre Esquenazi dans son livre La vérité de la fiction. Comment peut-on croire que les récits de fiction nous parlent sérieusement de la réalité? nous étudions de quelle manière les fictions choisies exemplifient certains aspects des réalités complexes et des parcours de leurs auteurs. Il s’agit de parcours – personnels et collectifs – marqués par l’histoire de la colonisation, par des représentations initiales déformées des Africains et par l’expérience et les déchirures de la migration, celle-ci plaçant les cinéastes en position de minorité dans leur pays de résidence. Nous montrons que ce statut en marge, qui oblige à une redéfinition de soi, peut devenir source de créativité artistique et générer un style cinématographique original. Les fictions étudiées, tout en partant de contextes socioculturels spécifiques, touchent à des problématiques humaines universelles. Elles produisent des énonciations collectives qui prennent aussi une valeur politique. Grâce à des formes narratives et à des esthétiques sobres la plupart du temps, mais capables d’exprimer l’hybridité culturelle et la pluralité, ce sont des personnages complexes, aux identités composites, qui sont mis en scène dans leur devenir. Les notions de cinéma accentué d’Hamid Naficy et de mineur développée par Deleuze et Guattari nous aident à explorer comment le regard décentré, interstitiel et multifocal des cinéastes transnationaux offre des points de vue différents et novateurs.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the identity issues in a corpus of African films made in the 2000's. These transnational films escape from the monolithic definition of "African cinema" as a genre, and translate the plural belongings of filmmakers. Using the concept of paraphrase theorized by Jean-Pierre Esquenazi in his book La vérité de la fiction. Comment peut-on croire que les récits de fiction nous parlent sérieusement de la réalité?, we study how these fictions illustrate some aspects of their authors' complexe realities and paths. Their personal and collective experiences are marked by initial misrepresentations, by colonization, by migration and cultural ruptures, which place the filmmakers in a marginal position within their countries of residence. It will illustrate how the exilic condition, requiring a redefinition of oneself, could also become a source of artistic creativity, and could encourage one to invent an adequate cinematographic style. These fictions, even starting from specific socio-cultural contexts, expand to some larger human issues. Expressing collective statements, they become political movies. Seeking asylum is a human right, which means that all states in the world that have signed the UN Refugee Convention are responsible for ensuring that refugees in need of protection can get it. Sweden has signed the UN Refugee Convention as early as in 1954. Thus, a legally secure asylum process is to be sought. The Swedish Migration Agency has a central role in this, as the reception of refugees is the primary responsibility of the Agency. The Migration Agency's case management must therefore comply with the requirements regarding ensuring the protection of people who are forced to flee, in Swedish, European and international law. A basic principle of asylum cases is that it is the applicant who has the burden of proof to make his protection needs plausible. On the other hand, the Migration Agency has an extended investigative responsibility, as there is a strong protection interest in investigations of asylum cases. The so-called officialprincipen places a demand on the Migration Agency to investigate a case to the extend its nature requires. If the work of Migrations Agency does not meet these requirements, the result may be that deficiencies in the investigation are put on the applicant and that the application gets rejected. Deficiency in case management by the Migration Agency, apart from that it is affecting individuals, and can destroy a life, can also, in the long run, have devastating consequences for the entire Swedish legal system. It also means more work for the courts, double work for the Migration Agency and increased costs for the judiciary system. The change of the instance procedure in 2005 has greatly improved the asylum process. The case law in the area has meant that the courts can check the Migration Agency's investigations and give references to the Migration Agency about what needs to be done in order for the administrative process to be more legally secure. My conclusion is that the Swedish legal order in this area is changing as more demands are made by the EU and due to the EU's increased competence in the area. When it comes to the actual design of the provision for the officialprincipen, it is rather vaguely designed. The frameworks for what is covered by the Migration Agency’s investigative duty appear relatively diffuse for the Agency. Hopefully, the provision in the new Administration Act, and a more solid case law in the area, will result in a more uniform and predictable enforcement of the officialprincipen at the Migration Agency.

O presente trabalho tem como objectivo comparar o processo psicológico da gravidez entre dois grupos de pais expectantes: pais de nacionalidade portuguesa e de nacionalidade cabo-verdiana. Para tal, recorreu-se ao questionário da autoria de Raphael-Leff – “Processo Psicológico da Gravidez” – partindo-se da hipótese de que os pais de nacionalidade portuguesa apresentam fantasias mais positivas sobre as dimensões constituintes do questionário. Participaram no estudo 60 sujeitos: 30 pertencem ao grupo 1 – pais de nacionalidade portuguesa – e outros 30 pertencem ao grupo 2 – pais de nacionalidade cabo-verdiana. Os participantes apresentam idades compreendidas entre os 20 e os 36 anos e encontram-se no terceiro trimestre da gravidez. Recolheu-se a amostra na Maternidade Dr. Alfredo da Costa (Lisboa) na consulta externa de obstetrícia. Quanto ao tratamento dos resultados recorreu-se à análise estatística. Constatou-se que existem diferenças significativas entre os dois grupos quanto ao processo psicológico da gravidez. A maioria dos pais foi classificado como “participante” embora os pais cabo-verdianos se declarem mais “recíprocos” comparativamente aos portugueses. As variáveis seleccionadas tiveram impacto significativo no processo psicológico do pai, com excepção das habilitações literárias e o conhecimento de género. Concluiu-se que a migração exerce uma influência importante nas fantasias dos pais em relação à gravidez.

This work aims to compare the psychological process of pregnancy between two groups of expectant fathers: fathers with Portuguese and Cape-Verdean nationality correspondingly. To proceed was used a questionnaire made by Raphael-Leff: “Psychological Process of Pregnancy”. This dissertation explores if the portuguese fathers evidence more positive fantasies towards pregnancy comparing to the cape-verdean fathers. Sixty expectant fathers participated in this study, divided in two groups respectively: group 1 – portuguese fathers; group 2 – cape-verdean fathers. The age rank is between 20 and 36 years old and every group are in the third trimester of pregnancy. The fathers were interviewed in Maternity Alfredo da Costa, in Lisbon, more precisely in the waiting room for the consultation of obstetrics. Regarding the results, analyzed statistically, it was found significant differences between the groups in the psychological process of pregnancy. Most part of the fathers was classified as “participants” during pregnancy, even though, cape-verdean fathers had more “reciprocator” orientations comparing to the portuguese fathers. The selected variables had a strong impact in the father’s psychological process, with the exception of the educational level and the baby gender knowledge. Moreover, it was concluded that migration affects a significant influence in the father’s fantasies about pregnancy.

▼ The vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) is arranged into exquisitely organized strata from a diverse collection of neuronal types. The zebrafish retina is a well-established model for studying the vertebrate CNS because it can be readily accessed during development and directly imaged. All main retinal cell types are derived from multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs), whose clonal sizes and compositions are stochastically determined. However, the biological processes that contribute to the stochastic cell fate decision making of RPCs remain largely unexplored. Another major hallmark of neural development is the oscillatory movement of nuclei between the apical and basal surfaces of the neuroepithelium during the process of interkinetic nuclear migration (IKNM). The precise role of IKNM in creating the organized diversity of neuronal tissues is the topic of continued and vigorous investigation. Therefore, we employed long-term, rapid imaging of whole zebrafish retinas during early stages of development to reveal the physical processes that govern the behavior of nuclei during IKNM and their contribution to variability in fate decision making of RPCs. We opti- mized the use of light sheet and two-photon microscopy techniques to image the developing zebrafish retina at a high temporal resolution over long time periods. These images made the raw material for production of reliable tracks of nuclear movements and division during early retinogenesis, for many tightly packed nuclei, using automated tracking software and manual curation. Subsequently, these tracks were used to create a model of retinal IKNM as a diffusive process across a nuclear concentration gradient generated by the addition of new nuclei at the apical surface. This analytical model is based on the observed stochastic basal movements of the nuclei during IKNM and produces a diffusion constant in line with those previously reported in the literature. Therefore, based on crowding of nuclei at the apical surface and a nuclear concentration gradient along the apicobasal axis, it provides a reasonable quantitative explanation for the stochastic distribution of nuclei across the retina. Furthermore, analysis of nuclear migration and cell fate determination imply a significant contribution of nuclear position and time spent near the basal surface on cell fate choices. These results suggest that IKNM may stochastically distribute nuclei across the retina whose positions, in turn, affect their fate choices.

Cette étude sociologique propose une analyse comparée de l’institution française (l’OFPRA) et allemande (le BAMF) chargées de l’instruction des demandes d’asile. L’enquête de terrain réalisée en leur sein a permis une description détaillée des pratiques administratives encadrant le processus d’élaboration des décisions sur les dossiers de demande. Des différences notables s’observent tant au niveau du profil socioprofessionnel des agents instructeurs de chacune des deux institutions nationales qu’à propos des attitudes générales de ces derniers face à la problématique de l’asile. Au-delà de ces différences, une remise en doute et une profonde méfiance face aux déclarations des demandeurs d’asile constituent une constante dans leur pratique professionnelle. L’importance que l’institution attribue à la question de la crédibilité des récits d’asile confère un pouvoir discrétionnaire significatif aux agents administratifs et laisse une place importante à l’intime conviction dans le processus décisionnel. La délicate communication avec les demandeurs et l’application parfois malaisée des textes de loi nationaux et internationaux aux problématiques présentées par ces derniers imprègnent l’instruction des dossiers d’une grande incertitude. L’analyse de la relation administrative entre demandeurs et décideurs permet finalement d’identifier la méfiance réciproque et le décalage entre les catégories juridiques et la réalité des migrations contemporaines comme deux problèmes centraux des dispositifs d’asile français et allemand.

This sociological study is a comparative analysis of the French (OFPRA) and German (BAMF) institutions in charge of processing asylum claims. Fieldwork on their premises enabled a detailed description of the administrative practices that frame the application-based decision-making process. Notable differences were observed between the two national institutions regarding the socio-professional profiles of the instructing agents but also the latter’s general attitudes towards the asylum issue. Beyond these differences, a constant in their professional practice can be found in an attitude of doubt and deep mistrust towards asylum seekers. In the evaluation of the applicant’s asylum accounts, institutions give great importance to the issue of credibility. This bestows a considerable discretionary power to the administrative agents. It also introduces a strong element of subjectivity in the decision-making process. Because of the delicate nature of communication with the applicants and the sometimes difficult application of national and international legislation to each particular case, the administrative decision-making process is imbued with great uncertainty. The analysis of the administrative relationship between applicants and decision-makers enables to identify the mutual mistrust and the gap between legal categories and the reality of contemporary migration as two central problems in the French and German asylum systems.
