▼ Dominant research in affect and decision making has considered positive emotions to be relatively undifferentiated. However, emerging research suggests that different, discrete positive emotions (e.g., happiness, pride, gratitude, hope, contentment) varying in their appraisals and themes might lead to differential influences on judgment and decision making. Given this progression in the literature, it is important to build a more nuanced understanding of the effects of discrete positive emotions. This thesis thus, aims to contribute to the emerging literature on discrete positive emotions by examining the effects of gratitude and pride gratitude across a variety of contexts. While both emotions are positive, they differ on the appraisal dimension of self-responsibility. That is, individuals who feel grateful (vs. pride) are less (vs. more) likely to perceive themselves as the focal responsible agent of a positive outcome. This in turn, can lead to unique downstream effects. Across three important, yet distinct domains, we examine the conditions under which gratitude and pride can lead to similar or divergent influences on consumer behaviour. The first essay finds that while gratitude (vs. pride) differentially increases the effectiveness of other-focused appeals, gratitude and pride are similarly effective in promoting self-focused appeals. The second essay tests and finds distinct gratitude and pride effects on the acceptance of consumer unethical behaviour, especially when a firm has a negative reputation. The final essay demonstrates that gratitude is more effective than pride in motivating responsible alcohol consumption. Taken together, these essays test various theoretically grounded moderators and mediators of emotion effects and provide a more holistic understanding of positive emotions, in general and of gratitude and pride effects, in particular. Moreover, our findings suggest important implications for marketers, policy makers as well as consumers, in order to both, better understand distinct influences of various positive emotions and devise more effective strategies to improve consumer welfare. ▼ Hierarchies emerge across all human societies, resulting in some individuals holding more resources than others. Pride is a critical emotion that signals one's status in the hierarchy to the self and others. We propose that pride is also related to the rationale individuals hold for the existence of hierarchies. Different aspects of pride may underlie the explanations people use for why hierarchies exist and the criteria upon which to judge others' positions within the hierarchy. The current set of studies explore the relationship between two facets of pride and two attitudes related to hierarchy - a preference for the merit principle (PMP), which posits that resources should be distributed based on accomplishment and performance, and social dominance orientation (SDO), which posits that some groups of people are innately superior to others. Study 1 suggests that high trait levels of alpha pride, an emotion stemming from the belief that one's success is due to stable, uncontrollable factors, are associated with high SDO and low PMP. High trait levels of beta pride, an emotion stemming from the belief that one's success is due to unstable, controllable factors, are unassociated with SDO, but related to high PMP. These associations remain after controlling for alternative explanatory variables including entity beliefs, positive affect, and impression management. Study 2 manipulates experiences of alpha and beta pride in order to examine downstream effects on hierarchy-maintaining attitudes. The results of Study 2 indicate that while alpha pride is associated with increased SDO and beta pride is associated with decreased SDO, both facets of pride at the state level are associated with increased PMP. In order to begin addressing the mechanism underlying the associations between different facets of pride and hierarchy-maintaining attitudes, Study 3 manipulates attributions for failure. Results lend some evidence that the association can be attributed to motivated reasoning and a desire to preserve one's elevated status.

▼ Tutkielmani tarkoituksena on tarkastella seksuaalivähemmistöjen edustajien pukeutumiselleen antamia merkityksiä suomalaisissa Pride-tapahtumissa. Keskityn erityisesti siihen, miten tutkimukseen osallistuneet vastaajat neuvottelevat sosiaalista näkyvyyttä. Tämän lisäksi tarkastelen, millaisia tilanteisia merkityksiä pukeutuminen saa Pride-tapahtumissa. Olen rajannut tutkimukseni kohteeksi seksuaalivähemmistöt ja heidän kokemuksensa pukeutumisen merkityksistä. Tutkielman teoreettisena lähtökohtana on toiminutpukeutumisen tutkiminen sosiaalisena, ruumiillisena ja tilanteisenä käytäntönä. Aineistoni koostuu kyselytutkimuksella internetin sosiaalisen median alustoilla ja erilaisten yhteisöjen sähköpostilistojen kautta kerätyistä kuva-ja tekstimateriaaleista. Aineisto on kerätty vuonna 2018. Aineiston analyysi on toteutettu aineistolähtöisenä teema-analyysina. Aineistoanalyysissani pääpaino on avovastauksissa, joiden rinnalla käytän kuvia deskriptiivisesti. Aineistonanalyysini rakentuu kahdesta osiosta. Ensimmäisessä osiossa käsittelen erityisesti pukeutumiselle annettuja sosiaalisia merkityksiä ja analysoin keinoja, joilla vastaajat neuvottelevat sosiaalista näkyvyyttä. Toisessa osiossa keskityn pukeutumiselle annettuihin tilanteisiin merkityksiin erityisesti Pride-tapahtuman kontekstissa. Ensimmäisessä analyysiosiossa jaottelen aineistoni pukeutumiselle annetut merkitykset kahteen pääteemaan; erottautuminen ja normalisointi. Näiden teemojen alla tarkastelen niitä keinoja, joilla vastaajat rakentavat identiteettiään pukeutumisensa avulla. Seksuaalivähemmistöön kuulumisen tunnistettavuus ja heteronormatiivisuudesta erottautuminen nousivat keskeisimmiksi puhetavoiksi erottautumisen teemassa. Pukeutumista merkityksellistettiin normalisoinnin teemassa kuvaamalla sitäarkisuuden ja neutraaliuden kautta sekä identiteetti-ilmauksen autenttisuutta korostaen. Analyysini toisessa osiossa Pride-tapahtuman kontekstissa pukeutumisen merkitysten kuvauksissa merkittävään rooliin nousi sateenkaariteema sekä värien käyttö merkitysten rakentajina ja viestijöinä. Sateenkaaren väreillä ilmaistiin niin kuulumista ja yhteisöllisyyttä kuin Pride-erityistä pukeutumistakin. Sateenkaariteeman esityksellisyyden kautta aineistossa esiin nousee myös Pride-tapahtuman kaupallistuminen. Keskeisenä teemana tutkimukseni tuloksissa näkyy seksuaalivähemmistöjen pukeutumiseen ja näkyvyyteen liittyvä ambivalenssi kuulumisen ja yksilöllisen ilmaisun välillä. Toisaalta vastaajat halusivat olla osa tapahtumaa ja sen yhteisöllisyyttä, mutta toisaalta stereotyyppisinä pidettyjä pukeutumisvalintoja haluttiin vältellä. Using the psychological theory of Self-Conscious Emotions (SCE) as a hermeneutical key for the study of Scripture and informed by the Contemporary Theory of Metaphors (CTM), this dissertation explores the possibility of analyzing the nature and dynamics of pride––in terms of its constituent elements of achievements, self-evaluation, self-image, satisfaction, joy, ethical consequences, etc.––in relation to the language used to describe Babylon and Zion in Isaiah. Against a monolithic and stereotypical understanding of pride of Babylon and Zion underlying the current biblical scholarship that tends to demonize Babylon’s pride and gloss over Zion’s pride, this dissertation attempts to determine whether the Isaian texts on the pride of Babylon and Zion manifest a distinction––as the theory of SCE propounds––between authentic and hubristic pride that correlate with these two cities. It focuses on how Babylon and Zion––the two prominent personified cities in Isaiah––went through a process of self-evaluation, formed their respective self-images based on their achievements, and became either hubristic or authentically proud as evidenced from the ethical consequences of pride in their lives. In doing so, this dissertation revisits the images of Babylon and Zion in Isaiah in light of psychological scholarship on pride as a self-conscious emotion. It avers that on the one hand, Zion is guilty of hubris––evidenced in an aggrandized self-image and in unethical practices––just as Babylon was, and on the other hand, the hope for the possibility of authentically proud Babylon or Zion––with an authentic self-image and righteous behavior––rests with the Servant of Yhwh as presented in Isaiah. As a result of this original approach, this dissertation hopes to deepen the scholarly discussion on pride in the HB in general and in Isaiah in particular.

▼ Over the last two decades, pride has attracted substantial interest from affective scientists. Curiously, however, considerations of pride have, for the most part, omitted one key feature of this emotion: that it can be felt in relation to the achievements of others. To date, no research has systematically investigated the nature and functions of pride arising from the success of others, that is, vicarious pride. The research presented in this dissertation addressed this gap by providing initial evidence regarding potential antecedents and functions of vicarious pride. The research presented herein tests novel proposed accounts of the antecedents and functions of vicarious pride. Potential antecedents were drawn from extant theorising, results from a qualitative study, and previous research on the affective responses to others’ achievements. A functional account of vicarious pride, comprising both intrapersonal and interpersonal functions, was proposed based on theoretical considerations. In line with recent trends towards the differentiation of positive emotions, the present research also sought to determine the extent to which vicarious pride is a unique affective experience.The proposed antecedent and function accounts of vicarious pride were tested across a series of nine studies that adopted a range of sampling techniques (university participants, community samples), methodological designs (correlational, experimental), emotion induction techniques (interpersonal, vignette), measurement techniques (self-report, behavioural), and analysis techniques (structural equation modelling, multiple regression, t-tests). The studies reported in this dissertation suggest that vicarious pride is a distinct affective experience that has unique antecedents and drives adaptive outcomes at both the intrapersonal and interpersonal level. Specifically, the results suggest that vicarious pride arises in response to achievements of close, highly liked others, when the achievement has positive implications for the future, and the achievement does not represent a personal cost to oneself. The results also suggest that vicarious pride serves to motivate personal goal pursuit, support for others’ goal pursuit, and relationship maintenance behaviours. Finally, results suggest that vicarious pride is, at least in part, distinct from generalised positive affect and self-oriented pride. Advancing both theory and methodology, these findings are the first to shed light on the antecedents and functions of vicarious pride and, as such, pave the path for continued research into the dynamics of this socially-oriented emotion. ▼ This project explores the involvement of Christian groups in Pride parades in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sydney. Pride parades are the largest and most public expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) identity, capturing a diverse range of voices. Their associated festivals and parties make the parades important social events for building LGBTIQ community. As such, participation in these parades is important for Christian groups that are affirming of LGBTIQ people. However, religious voices remain the loudest opponents of the LGBTIQ movement’s claims for social and legal recognition. Anti-gay religious groups often target parades to proclaim their beliefs that homosexuality is deviant, and some attempt to prevent the parades from happening at all. In Western countries, these voices are overwhelmingly Christian. LGBTIQ Christians thus often express a sense of being caught between two extremes, and sometimes do not feel a sense of belonging in either their own religious tradition or in the LGBTIQ community. Informed by standpoint theory, this project uses ethnographic research methods, including participant-observation and semi-structured interviews, to provide a ritual analysis of Christian participation in Pride. Through the researcher’s participation in and observation of these events, three ritual spaces were identified for analysis: worship services, the fête, and the parade. In all three spaces, the groups included in this study drew on rituals and symbols from both their religious traditions and the LGBTIQ movement, and combined them to publicly express an integrated identity. The study also identifies some of the ways in which these groups navigated tensions between Pride culture and Christian culture, particularly through their responses to the commercialised and sexualised aspects of Pride. The study offers insights into the contemporary LGBTIQ Christian movement and its relationship to the broader LGBTIQ community.

Tidigare forskning av Cheng, Tracy och Henrich (2010) har identifierat samband mellan tvåfacetter av stolthet och två olika strategier för att nå social status. Dessa samband harkonceptualiserats till stolthet-statusmodellen. Den har tidigare undersökts i en amerikanskpopulation och det finns enbart en studie på en liten avgränsad svensk population. Vidarefinns det inga tidigare studier som har undersökt om stolthet-statusmodellen samvarierar medpositiva attityder till utbildning. Denna studies syften var därför att undersöka stolthet-statusmodellen på en svensk population samt undersöka hur de olika statusstrategierna ochstolthetsfacetterna samvarierar med positiva attityder kring utbildning. För att undersöka dettagjordes ett bekvämlighetsurval av 609 stycken elever på teoretiska gymnasieprogram som fickskatta sin subjektiva upplevelse av stolthetsfacetterna, statusstrategierna samt sina positivaattityder till utbildning. Gymnasieelevernas skattningar korrelerades och skillnaden mellankorrelationerna undersöktes. Resultaten visar att stolthet-statusmodellen delvis är valid på ensvensk population, att statusstrategier samvarierar signifikant med positiva attityder tillutbildning och att stolthetsfacetterna till viss del samvarierar signifikant med positiva attitydertill utbildning. Möjliga förklaringar till resultaten diskuteras tillsammans med enmetoddiskussion samt praktiska implikationer och förslag på framtida forskning om stolthet-statusmodellen och positiva attityder till utbildning.

Previous research by Cheng, Tracy and Henrich (2010) has identified relationships betweentwo facets of pride and two different strategies to attain social status. These relationships havebeen conceptualized to a pride-status model. The model has been tested on an Americanpopulation and only in one study has it been tested in a Swedish context. Moreover, there areno previous studies on the possible relationship between the pride-status model and positiveattitudes towards post-secondary education. Therefore, the purposes of this study were toinvestigate if the pride-status model is valid on a Swedish population and investigate how thedifferent status strategies and facets of pride relate to positive attitudes towards post-secondary education. In order to examine this, a convenience sample consisting of 609students in high school preparing for post-secondary education rated subjective experiences offacets of pride, social status strategies and attitudes towards post-secondary education. Thestudents’ ratings were correlated with each other and the difference between the correlationswas examined. The findings show that the pride-status model is partly valid on a Swedishpopulation and that the status strategies correlated significantly with positive attitudes towardspost-secondary education. The facets of pride were significantly correlated with positiveattitudes towards post-secondary education to some extent. ▼ Two trends in building today are urbanization and a focus on sustainability. Concerns about sustainability, especially in building and city design, have been growing for decades now, and are being driven forward by fears over the effects of climate change. Urbanization is rapid population growth in many cities around the world caused by an influx of people from suburban, exurban, and rural communities. In some parts of the United States which experienced suburbanization during the middle part of the 20th century, this is a return of population to the city, or a reurbanization. This growth has led to a need for new development, with a focus on sustainability, in areas where past developments already exist. For these new developments to occur unused or underused buildings and sites are targeted for either adaptive reuse or slated to be demolished and replaced. Whereas the environmental and financial sustainability of different types of building design and construction have repeatedly been the focus of studies, the effects on social sustainability have been, for the most part, neglected. This paper compares the effects of adaptive reuse development with new development on issues which pertain to the social sustainability of a community, specifically community identity and local pride. The goal is to better understand the effects of different types of development on the surrounding community to better direct future redevelopment in a socially sustainable way. Research was conducted by surveying residents of Rochester, New York, on six selected developments, as well as their general impressions of the Rochester community. Data from the surveys was analyzed to better understand if, and to what extent, adaptive reuse and new construction developments have affected the community identity and local pride of the surrounding area. This research shows that adaptive reuse better establishes or retains community identity and does more to foster local pride than new construction, and therefore should be given extra consideration when redeveloping urban neighborhoods. ▼ This dissertation examines issues of sexuality, gender, and citizenship through the lens of the yearly summer event la Marche de la visibilité homosexuelle, bisexuelle et transgenre in the eastern French city of Strasbourg. The overarching question asks how this event impacts contemporary manifestations and discussions of minority communities within the French nation-state. In existence since 2002, the march presents a unique and engaging opportunity to illuminate the evolution of French ideas of “proper” citizenship roles through critical, theoretical, and empirical inquiry. As a public forum for overt sexual(ized) expression(s), the marche de la visibilité offers participants the opportunity to present themselves as a cohesive community, even where one may not necessarily exist in reality. By making themselves “visible” to spectators, participants are able to critique societal norms not only through linguistic signs but also physical presence. In order to provide a comprehensive study of the event and its impact upon contemporary manifestations of difference, this dissertation examines the marche de la visibilité from four different angles. First, by tracing the evolution of citizenship within the French nation-state, I uncover and emphasize not only its inclusionary but also exclusionary nature. Next, I turn to a discussion of the symbolic power associated with space and place. Taking inspiration from scholars such as Maurice Agulhon, James Lehning, and Michel de Certeau, I build upon their work to frame my understanding of the ways in which politically motivated groups appropriate and actualize the spaces they occupy. I argue that through their repeated usage of the space, the marche de la visibilité is able to alter our normalized perceptions of the city. Following this discussion, I undertake an analysis of a study I designed and conducted during the 2008 edition of the march. Here I employed a closed-question attitude survey where participants were asked to reflect upon their position vis-à-vis the march and its importance to them in order to discern any statistically significant differences between participants. What came to the surface were variations between self-identified gay men and lesbians. Overall, lesbians tended to view the march as more important in many ways, while gay men leaned towards more tepid responses. I interpreted this to be indicative of the relative invisibility of lesbians within the public sphere, where the opportunity to present themselves as lesbians to spectators represents a major perquisite. In the final chapter, I turn to an analysis of the linguistic messages displayed by participants and the power these messages have to either align or distance the message bearers with/from spectators in an effort to understand the discourses that are deployed in their attempts to gain political visibility. ▼ A multi-method study was conducted to provide greater conceptual clarity around the construct of organizational pride (i.e., an employee’s pride in the organization for which he or she works). Study 1 investigated the nature, emergence, and role of organizational pride in the workplace. Thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted among employees across four industries (advertising/marketing; financial services; food & beverage; healthcare). Analysis of these interviews revealed the distinct affective nature of organizational pride, how employees come to experience it, and its influence on employees’ attitudes and behaviors. Study 2 was designed to develop a psychometrically valid measure of organizational pride. This study, which included data from four samples of working adults, provided empirical support for a new nine item, three-dimensional measure of organizational pride. The measure demonstrated strong reliability at the global construct and dimension level and confirmatory factor analysis validated the construct’s higher-order and three-factor structure. This study also provided evidence of construct distinctiveness from affective commitment and organizational identification. In terms of incremental validity, the new measure of organizational pride explained variance in key employee attitudes and behaviors when controlling for Blader and Tyler’s (2009) measure of pride. While the study design did not allow for casual interpretations, the results suggest that organizational pride influences employees’ engagement at work, their extra-role performance, as well as their intentions to remain with their organization. Overall, this research was designed to advance our understanding of organizational pride and lay the foundation for future research.
