▼ The topic of time-series prediction has been very well researched in studies of dynamic systems. However, most studies in the field have focused more on predicting movement of a single time-series only, whilst prediction of multiple time-series based on the dynamics of interactions between variables has received little attention. This PhD study is concerned with advances in the analysis, modelling and prediction of dynamic systems with respect to multiple time-series. The main objective of this thesis is to develop novel adaptive methods to discover and model dynamic pattern of interactions in multiple time-series to not only predict their future values but also to extract knowledge about their joint movement. Being able to adaptively model dynamic pattern of interactions between multiple variables is expected to lead to a better understanding of the dynamic system under evaluation. Additionally, as new patterns of interaction emerge intermittently, the models to be developed are also required to have the ability to evolve and learn incrementally. To realise these objectives three distinct methods of multiple time-series analysis are developed based on different concepts of learning (inductive and transductive reasoning) which are capable of modelling the dynamics of interaction between variables in a specific setting. As each approach addresses the problem of multiple time-series analysis and modelling from a different perspective and since each has its own predictive power, an integrated multi-model framework that incorporates the different approaches through a dynamic contribution adjustment function is also proposed. In this study, the proposed methods have been applied for the analysis, modelling and prediction of two real world case studies: (1) multiple interactive stock markets in the Asia Pacific region and (2) weather conditions at different locations in New Zealand. Results from the two case studies suggest that (a) the proposed methods are capable of modelling dynamic pattern of interactions between variables and (b) that the idea of including the nature and strength of relationship between a collection of time sensitive variables (which are related to each other) into a prediction model appears to be beneficial to the problem of multiple time-series prediction. The research is based on three main information processing principles proposed by Prof. Kasabov in the period of 1998-2011: (1) The principle of evolving, adaptive connectionist systems; (2) The principle of integrated global, local and personalised modelling; and (3) The principle of dynamic interaction network. Using these three principles 3 new computational methods are proposed and tested on both synthetic and real data for adaptive incremental learning and knowledge discovery from multiple time-series data. A software system was developed to implement the methods. Solutions to two specific case study problems are proposed and tested - financial time-series prediction; climate events prediction. ▼ Vibratory driving is today the most common installation method of sheet piles. The knowledge of the induced ground vibrations is however still deficient. This makes predictions of the vibration magnitudes difficult to carry out with good reliability. To avoid exceeding the limit values, resulting in stops of production, or that vibratory driven sheet piles are discarded for more costly solutions, a need for increased knowledge of the vibration process is imminent. With increased knowledge, a more reliable and practical prediction model can be developed. The aim of this thesis is to analyze measured data from a field study to increase the understanding of the induced vibrations and their propagation through the soil. The field study was performed in Karlstad in May 2010, where a trial sheet piling prior to an extension of Karlstad Theatre was carried out. During the trial sheet piling, two triaxial geophones were mounted at the ground surface at two different distances from the sheet piles, to measure the vibration amplitude. The field test is associated with some limitations. Only four sheet piles were driven, with one measurement per sheet pile. Some measurements were less successful and some parameters had to be assumed. This limits the accuracy but still provides some interesting results. Another aim is to compare the measured values to existing models for predicting vibrations from piling and sheet piling operations. There are today several prediction models available, which however often provide too crude estimations or alternatively are too advanced to be incorporated in practical use. Two basic empirical prediction models are compared to the measured values in Karlstad, where the first is one of the earliest and most well known models and the other is a later development of the first model. The purpose of this comparison is to evaluate these models to contribute to the development of a new prediction model. The results show that the earlier model greatly overestimates the vibration magnitude while the later developed model provides a better estimation. A literature study is performed to gain a theoretical background to the problem of ground vibrations and how they are related to the method of vibratory driving of sheet piles. The analysis considering the field study and prediction models is mainly performed by using MATLAB to obtain different graphical presentations of the vibration signals. The conclusions that can be drawn from the results are that the focus of vibration analysis should not always be the vertical vibration components. Horizontal movements of the sheet pile might be introduced, e.g. by the configuration of the clamping device, which generates additional vibrations in horizontal directions. The soil characteristics influence the magnitude of the vibrations. As the sheet pile reaches a stiffer soil layer, the vibration magnitude increases. A realistic and reliable prediction model should take the characteristics of the soil into account.

▼ Ion chromatography (IC) is the premier technique for the separation of inorganic and organic ions. Two fundamental elution regimes, namely isocratic and gradient elution, are available for separation but both are often inadequate for the separation of complex mixtures. Hence, complex elution profiles involving multiple isocratic and linear gradient steps have become the most attractive solution to accomplish the desired separations. However, the number of parameters requiring trial-and-error optimisation of such elution profiles demands a huge investment in time. This problem can be solved through the development of in-silico (computerised) simulation, and ultimately optimisation, methods. The Virtual Column Separation Simulator (Dionex Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) is an efficient commercial software package for simulating and optimising IC separations. However, it has a number of limitations. The objective of this study was to address the limitations of the Virtual Column Separation Simulator and improve its prediction and optimisation abilities. This project focussed on improving the algorithms used for simulation and modelling of retention and peak width. This study commenced with an evaluation of the maximum tolerable prediction error thresholds for retention time and peak width needed for an accurate in-silico optimisation. A sample mixture is normally designed to be separated within a time window of less than 30 minutes. So the acceptable maximum prediction error evaluation was analysed based on a 30-min separation. This analysis indicated that retention time had a much greater influence than peak width on the accuracy of in-silico optimisation. It was found that the acceptable average error limits for representative prediction were 2.5% and 35% for retention time and peak width respectively. Three retention time algorithms and two peak width models were proposed in this study for modelling IC separations. Prediction of analyte retention times under complex eluent profiles using these methods relied on monitoring the analyte displacement through the chromatographic column. The three devised algorithms mapped the position of the analyte in different ways where the position mapping methods of the three algorithms relied on mathematical iteration (which this algorithm was entitled the “linear analyte displacement model”), integrated displacement equations and numerical segmented isocratic steps. The three algorithms were found to be highly similar in their predictive errors, which were all 4% on average. Peak width modelling was much more difficult due to well known peak broadening processes. Two empirical peak width models were found to be viable for peak width simulation of analyte under complex eluent profiles. The first peak width model measured the compression exerted from each individual step using a weighting function with a compression term calculation. ▼ Over the last few decades, construction project performance has been evaluated due to the increase of delays, cost overruns and quality failures. Growing numbers of disputes, inharmonious working environments, conflict, blame cultures, and mismatches of objectives among project teams have been found to be contributory factors to poor project performance. Performance measurement (PM) approaches have been developed to overcome these issues, however, the comprehensiveness of PM as an overall approach is still criticised in terms of the iron triangle; namely time, cost, and quality. PM has primarily focused on objective measures, however, continuous improvement requires the inclusion of subjective measures, particularly contractor satisfaction (Co-S). It is challenging to deal with the two different groups of large and small-medium contractor satisfaction as to date, Co-S has not been extensively defined, primarily in developing countries such as Malaysia. Therefore, a Co-S model is developed in this research which aims to fulfil the current needs in the construction industry by integrating performance measures to address large and small-medium contractor perceptions. The positivist paradigm used in the research was adhered to by reviewing relevant literature and evaluating expert discussions on the research topic. It yielded a basis for the contractor satisfaction model (CoSMo) development which consists of three elements: contractor satisfaction (Co-S) dimensions; contributory factors and characteristics (project and participant). Using valid questionnaire results from 136 contractors in Malaysia lead to the prediction of several key factors of contractor satisfaction and to an examination of the relationships between elements. The relationships were examined through a series of sequential statistical analyses, namely correlation, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-tests and multiple regression analysis (MRA). Forward and backward MRAs were used to develop Co-S mathematical models. Sixteen Co-S models were developed for both large and small-medium contractors. These determined that the large contractor Malaysian Co-S was most affected by the conciseness of project scope and quality of the project brief. Contrastingly, Co-S for small-medium contractors was strongly affected by the efficiency of risk control in a project. The results of the research provide empirical evidence in support of the notion that appropriate communication systems in projects negatively contributes to large Co-S with respect to cost and profitability. The uniqueness of several Co-S predictors was also identified through a series of analyses on small-medium contractors. These contractors appear to be less satisfied than large contractors when participants lack effectiveness in timely authoritative decision-making and communication between project team members. ▼ A long-standing problem in climate modeling is the accurate prediction of precipitation with respect to three key characteristics: geographic variation of total amount, frequency and intensity, and the diurnal cycle. In particular, coarse-resolution climate models have low predictive skills at regional scales, while the higher-resolution regional climate/weather models show improved downscaling skill but still exhibit biases and are highly sensitive to cumulus parameterization (CUP) especially during the summer. Most current models also tend to predict rainfall too early in the daytime and too frequently at the light intensity over both land and oceans. These problems have been identified with model deficiencies in CUP. As the core problem of CUP, cumulus closure assumptions fundamentally determine the location, frequency and intensity of convective rainfall. Numerous closures have been proposed, but there is no consensus with respect to their relative performance. This study uses the CWRF model which incorporates an Ensemble Cumulus Parameterization (ECP) scheme to evaluate the performance of different widely-used closures for summer precipitation prediction regarding the above three key features. The ECP includes five major groups of closure assumptions with 16 different algorithms: the Arakawa-Schubert quasi-equilibrium (AS), the vertical velocity (W), the moisture convergence (MC), the total instability adjustment (KF), and the instability tendency (TD). Extensive experiments are conducted by implementing these closures separately over the continental U.S. and adjacent coastal oceans. Results show that cumulus closures significantly affect U.S. precipitation patterns, heavy rainfall occurrence, and the diurnal cycle, with strong regional dependence differing between land and coastal oceans. Over the U.S. coastal oceans, two closure algorithms using the average vertical velocity at the cloud base (W_2) and moisture convergence (MC_3) complementarily reproduce the summer precipitation patterns and amount, and both skillfully capture the frequency of heavy rainfall events. However, the instability tendency closures are superior in capturing the diurnal phase but with much larger amount deficits. This suggests that cloud base vertical velocity and moisture convergence primarily determine seasonal mean and daily precipitation variability, but the instability tendency plays a critical role in regulating precipitation sub-daily variation. Over the continental U.S., the MC closure most realistically reproduces Central U.S. summer rainfall amount, daily precipitation variation and frequency distribution, but produces wet biases over the North American Monsoon (NAM) region and Southeast U.S. which can be significantly reduced by using the W closure. Further skill enhancement can be made using an optimized ensemble of the MC and W closures. The TD and KF closures show advantages in capturing the diurnal signals over the Central U.S. and NAM, respectively. ▼ The objective of this thesis is to develop and validate a computational framework based on mathematical models for the motion prediction and dynamic stability quantification of human walking, which can differentiate the dynamic stability of human walking with different mechanical properties of the leg. Firstly, a large measurement database of human walking motion was created. It contains walking measurement data of 8 subjects on 3 self-selected walking speeds, which 10 trials were recorded at each walking speed. The motion of whole-body centre of mass and the leg were calculated from the kinetic-kinematic measurement data. The fundamentals of leg property have been presented, and the parameters of leg property were extracted from the measurement data of human walking where the effects of walking speed and condition of foot-ground contact were investigated. Three different leg property definitions comprising linear axial elastic leg property, nonlinear axial elastic leg property and linear axial-tangential elastic leg property were used to extracted leg property parameters. The concept of posture-dependent leg property has been proposed, and the leg property parameters were extracted from the measurement data of human walking motion where the effects of walking speed and condition of foot-ground contact were also investigated. The compliant leg model with axial elastic property (CAE) was used for the dynamic stability analysis of human walking with linear and nonlinear axial elastic leg property. The compliant leg model with axial and tangential elastic property (CATE) was used for that with linear axial-tangential elastic leg property. The posture - dependent elastic leg model (PDE) was used for that with posture-dependent leg property. It was found that, with linear axial elastic leg property, the global stability of human walking improves with the bigger touchdown contact angle. The average leg property obtained from the measurement data of all participants allows the maximum global stability of human walking. With nonlinear axial elastic leg property, the global stability decreases with the stronger nonlinearity of leg stiffness. The incorporation of the tangential elasticity improves the global stability and shifts the stable walking velocity close to that of human walking at self-selected low speed (1.1-1.25 m/s).By the PDE model, the human walking motions were better predicted than by the CATE model. The effective range of walking prediction was enlarged to 1.12 – 1.8 m/s. However, represented by PDE model, only 1-2 walking steps can be achieved. In addition, the profiles of mechanical energies represented by the PDE model are different from that of the orbital stable walking represented by CATE model. However, in recent years, an increasing number of drug counterfeit products were detected in it. This increase in documented incidents greatly concerns the pharmaceutical industry, and state and federal regulatory bodies. The repercussions of a tainted drug supply chain are potentially economically devastating and detrimental to the health and well-being of the public. Decision makers face a challenge keeping the drug supply chain safe from these influences, specifically assessing the risk of drug counterfeiting. With the problems posed by counterfeit, the identification of the right counterfeit attributes and the development of models to help supply chain managers determine the probability of counterfeit drugs are vital. Known drug counterfeiting research and studies are limited in scope; and despite increasing trends in counterfeiting, empirical research in this area is scarce. This research undertakes an in-depth examination of literature to identify counterfeit attributes and factors as well as to develop a drug counterfeit model to assess the probability of the drug counterfeiting. The identification of drug counterfeiting attributes resulted from a comprehensive review of the literature and a survey of experts. Data were subsequently collected on the attributes identified through literature, case studies, and experts. The findings of this research led to these substantive outcomes: * The identification of 10 key counterfeit attributes: Average Price, Drug Class, Medication Class, Product Type, Volume, Product Complexity, Product Location, Region, Previous Product Counterfeiting, and Product Shortage. * Using exploratory factor analysis, a model emerged with three distinct factors: Market, Product History, and Supply Chain Characteristics. * A process and a model are developed to assess the probability of drug counterfeiting. This is the first known model developed to assess the probability of drug counterfeiting. ▼ Social media provides increasing opportunities for users to voluntarily share their thoughts and concerns in a large volume of data. While user-generated data from each individual may not provide considerable information, when combined, they include variables which can convey significant events. In this thesis, we pursue the question of whether social media context can provide socio-behavior ``signals'' for scio-economic index prediction. The hypothesis is that crowd publicly available data in social media, in particular Twitter, may include predictive variables which can indicate the changes of socio-economic indexes. We developed content-based and user-centric prediction models where the objective is to employ Twitter content to predict whether the rates increase or decrease for the prospective time-frame. In order to collect Twitter data, we developed an activity-based sampling approach to collect credible users. The intention is to target users who are historically active rather than those who do not have enough contributions in the past. Since our problem has a sequential order, extracting meaningful patterns from historical tweets involves temporal analysis. Prediction models require to address information evolution, in which data are more related when they are close in time rather than further apart. We introduced a four-phase temporal topic detection model to infer predictive hidden topics. The model includes document partitioning, topic inference, topic selection, and document representation phases. In fact, a dynamic vocabulary is built to detect emerging topics. The extracted topics are compared over time to select more diverse and novel topics in each time consideration. The selected topics as predictive features are then applied in the proposed prediction models. The prediction models were evaluated for crime prediction in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. The conducted experiments revealed the correlation between features extracted from the content and crime rates directions. The findings indicate that, extracted topics from content of active users achieved better performance compared to other features such as auxiliary ones. Overall, the proposed models in Twitter data collection and temporal topic detection have contributions in user-based sampling approaches and sequential topic detection problems, respectively.S Advisors/Committee Members: Makrehchi, Masoud.

▼ Despite the remarkable foreseen advancements in maximizing network capacities, the in-expansible nature of radio spectrum exposed outdated spectrum management techniques as a core limitation. Fixed spectrum allocation inefficiency has generated a proliferation of dynamic spectrum access solutions to accommodate the growing demand for wireless, and mobile applications. This research primarily focuses on spectrum occupancy prediction which equip dynamic users with the cognitive ability to identify and exploit instantaneous availability of spectrum opportunities. The first part of this research is devoted to identifying candidate occupancy prediction techniques suitable for SOP scenarios are extensively analysed, and a theoretical based model selection framework is consolidated. The performance of single user Bayesian/Markov based techniques both analytically and numerically. Understanding performance bounds of Bayesian/Markov prediction allows the development of efficient occupancy prediction models. The third and fourth parts of this research investigates cooperative decision and data-based occupancy prediction. The expected cooperative prediction accuracy gain is addressed based on the single user prediction model. Specifically, the third contributions provide analytical approximations of single user, as well as cooperative hard fusion based spectrum prediction. Finally, the forth contribution shows soft fusion is superior and more robust compared to hard fusion cooperative prediction in terms of prediction accuracy. Throughout this research, case study analysis is provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed approaches. Analytical approaches and Monte-Carlo simulation are compared for the performance metric of interest. Remarkably, the case study analysis confirmed that the statistical approximation can predict the performance of local and hard fusion cooperative prediction accurately, capturing all the essential aspects of signal detection performance, temporal dependency of spectrum occupancy as well as the finite nature of the network.

▼ Over the past few decades, several active traffic control methods have been developed and implemented to mitigate freeway congestion. Among them, Variable Speed Limit (VSL) is considered the most efficient control method. In addition, the latest advances in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have made it feasible to implement predictive freeway control. The successful implementation of such control requires an accurate macroscopic traffic flow model that can predict all the important traffic dynamics. To avoid violation of the equilibrium traffic state assumption and to improve traffic state prediction accuracy in the VSL control situation, this research proposes a 2nd order model, DynaTAM-VSL, which drops parameterization of the METANET’s FD; instead, it includes speed limit-dependent parameters in the speed and density dynamics. The validation results with the 20-s loop detector data confirmed that, compared to the existing models, the proposed model better simulates traffic flow. With the validated model, this research investigates the impact of control parameters and demand levels on total travel time and throughput under the coordinated VSL control and determined a range of the demand / bottleneck capacity ratio, when VSL simultaneously improves both of the mobility parameters, which resolved the existing paradoxical results. This research also proposes an isolated VSL control strategy that aims at avoiding capacity drop at recurrent freeway bottlenecks. To evaluate the effectiveness of the control strategy, a base model of the 11-km test site: Whitemud Drive (WMD), Edmonton is calibrated within a microscopic traffic flow simulator to reproduce real-world traffic conditions, while the control strategy is implemented to evaluate its impact. The sensitivity analysis of the control strategy on safety constraints and VSL update frequencies demonstrates promising results to support practical implementation. Considering its flexible use in macroscopic simulation, a 1st order traffic flow model, CTM-VSL, is proposed. Unlike the 2nd order models, it is parsimonious: it only includes parameters that can be estimated using routinely available point detector data. However, the model is valid only for the condition of perfect compliance by drivers to VSL control, since it shares same properties of the CTM model. To update the storage capacity of an upstream segment of a VSL sign, a real-time queue estimation model is proposed. Despite the simple structure of the CTM-VSL model, the VSL control shows comparable results with the DynaTAM-VSL in terms of improving mobility parameters. Finally, this research distinguishes the relative contributions of driver compliance levels (CLs) and a predictive VSL control with different CLs to improve traffic flows. Several CL-to-VSL strategies are modeled with a fixed co-efficient of variance of speeds obtained from static speed limit on WMD. ▼ In microelectronic assemblies, solder joints serve as interconnection between different packaging levels and are an important cause for the failure of microelectronic products. Sn-Ag-Cu solder alloys became important after lead-based solder alloys were caused to be discarded by regulations in European Union and Japan. However, the constitutive behavior of Sn-Ag-Cu alloys is not as well understood as lead-based solder alloys, and many studies confirm the aging of these alloys with time. The aging of Sn-Ag-Cu alloys and its effect on mechanical behavior challenges the reliability prediction of microelectronic assemblies. In this study, the effect of pretest isothermal aging and in-test aging on the fatigue behavior of Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu alloy are examined using the microstructurally adaptive creep model (MACM) and the maximum entropy fracture model (MEFM). In this thesis, first, the development of microstructurally adaptive creep model is reviewed. Compared to traditional constitutive models, this model considers the effect of thermal history. Two microstructural parameters, the average Ag3Sn particles size and the average primary-Sn cell size are identified as critical parameters and incorporated into a modified Dorn creep form, which can describe both climb-controlled and glide-controlled dislocation motions. Next, the maximum entropy fracture model is discussed and compared to traditional fatigue fracture model. The MEFM utilizes the damage accumulation parameter, which connects the accumulated damage to the accumulated inelastic dissipation. This parameter is independent of sample geometry, test temperature and strain rate. Later, using MACM and MEFM, the extraction of the damage accumulation parameters is presented. The creep models for different aging conditions are constructed first based on microstructural characterization. The damage accumulation parameters of 25 celsius and 100 celsius tests are fit using MEFM. The parameters are presumed different for the two conditions because of the different aging states of the material. The concepts of static aging and dynamic aging are introduced and utilized to describe pretest aging and in-test aging. In 25 celsius test, with longer static aging, the damage accumulation parameter is smaller, indicating a faster fatigue damage accumulation. Through the relationship between damage accumulation parameter and the average primary-Sn cell size, the influence of microstructural evolution introduced by static aging on fatigue behavior is confirmed. In 100 celsius tests, the effect of dynamic aging is captured by the change of damage accumulation parameter in experiments. Comparing the damage accumulation parameters from 25 celsius and 100 celsius tests, during test, further aging of Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu microstructure occurs, degrading fatigue behavior until microstructural evolution is completed.
