▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002 Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they most affected. How did the differing governments and communities at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites across these countries at the turn of the millenium? In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those affected, the memorial designs and the management of the memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary atrocity sites. The original research includes the identification of the role the internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the 2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in 2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at all the sites identified issues not previously considered in Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary atrocity sites. A combined research method based on an interpretive social science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used, including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material, site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history, memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’ memorialisation. These shared histories, I argue, strengthened the justification for this comparative study. This comparative study identified differences across the case study countries in the designs of the built memorials, in legislation enacted after the atrocities, the responses to the perpetrators, the marking of anniversaries, and in the management of tributes left at the sites. ▼ Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia with a population close to 60 million people, which suffers from underdeveloped infrastructure. With the change of government and restoration of democracy starting from 2011, policy reforms are anticipated leading to large-scale economic development and growth. This growth is expected to result in rapidly increasing trade volumes. Myanmar’s maritime infrastructure needs upgrades: existing ports are mainly up-river, have limited draught and need continuous dredging. Currently, six deep sea port projects are being planned, but it is not known whether these sites have been selected based on rational, commercial and technical considerations or on (geo)political interests from the past. If these sites have been selected based on outdated political considerations, rather than commercial, well-grounded and sustainable development, they may struggle to obtain finances and support. Especially in the past, port sites were often allocated based on (geo)political considerations. However, because site selection is critical to port development and the long-term success and growth of a port, research into optimum and sustainable site selection is of significant value. The research objective is development of a strategy for deep sea port site selection and port development in Myanmar, by developing, validating and applying a framework for sustainable site selection, integrating a stakeholder-inclusive approach and ecosystem services. This framework is developed based on literature and desk study, and a comprehensive case study conducted in Myanmar. The strategy elaborates upon the optimum site selection (process), conceptual lay-outs and biggest challenges. Following the developed two-step site selection process, a short list with the sites Pathein, Yangon, Mawlamyine and Dawei was obtained. By means of a Multi-Actor Multi-Criteria Analysis and a cluster-based ranking, Mawlamyine and Yangon ended first. Yangon seems like a logical choice for deep sea port development, as it is the economic center of the country with the best hinterland connectivity. Despite pressure from stakeholders, it is concluded that Yangon is not a suitable location for deep sea port development because of physical restraints. However, it is a crucial port and must be part of the strategy. Yangon and Thilawa port should maintain and strengthen their current activities, and this appears best in combination with a deep sea port near Kalegauk Island (near Mawlamyine), which is connected with a high-quality road connection to Thailand and the Greater Mekong Subregion. Besides, this site offers many opportunities with respect to Ecosystem Services, by using Ecosystem-Based design principles. This port will accommodate the large Post-Panamax vessels and Yangon and its hinterland will be connected to it by sea, road and rail. ▼ In the early twentieth century, modernisation was underway in Australia. The social and political ruptures characteristic of that process resulted in many feeling the need for continuity between the past and the present. In New South Wales the desire for stability and continuity was actively represented through efforts to prevent the demolition a variety of historic places that held communal memories. The preservation of historic buildings began with pressure from local groups maintaining a sense of place, but took on a nationalist cast, when, in a climate of rising nationalism, environmental development began to remove buildings significant to powerful social groups and to a wider range of communities. This thesis investigates the history of the practice of preserving historic buildings in New South Wales from 1900 to the 1950s. It particularly pays attention to the positioning of historians within the emerging building-preservation movement, and takes note of historic preservation’s relationship to the formation of national identities and to the diverse changes wrought by modernity on society and culture. From the early years of the twentieth century, amateur and then professional historians were positioned as experts and leaders in Australian history. The brief included active promotion of historic preservation. Thus began the transformation of buildings into historic monuments, that is, monuments not purpose-built, but chosen from existing building stock for those shared memories and historical associations, used to connect people to communal identities, including national identities. Monumentalisation, however, transforms old buildings into structures whose attachment to identity not only emerges from memorial associations but which is also substantially visual – that is, its role is to present as something of a spectacle. By the 1930s, at a time when modern visual technologies were producing a rising visual sensibility, many architects and artists were persuaded that some colonial buildings had aesthetic merit. Tensions arose between architectural factions on the question of preservation, as they also did within planning. Furthermore, unexplored differences between the communal meanings which architects assigned to historic buildings and those assumed by historians led to events that damaged the authority of the history profession over historic buildings. After World War II, artistic and aesthetic ideas came to dominate the emerging idea of heritage. The institutionalisation of the movement was overseen by amateur and professional groups favouring an aesthetic sensibility to the detriment of an historical approach. How and why this occurred is the subject of this work.

When looking at a country like Oman that is abundant in its historical and cultural heritage, it is apparent that these aspects have a huge role in shaping this country’s identity, and remains to this day engraved in different parts of its built environment. However, the values and opportunities of cultural heritage are increasingly overlooked in urban developments, due to the misconception that it might not fit in the mold or vision that developers are creating with trends of “smart, high-tech, innovative cities”. This strongly applies to countries in the Middle-East as they attempt to replicate existing successful developments, while disregarding the context of the area, culture, and identity that distinguishes them and makes them unique, as a result; this has led to failed schemes and unavoidable lack of identity in these projects. Integrating certain aspects of cultural heritage in urban developments could be of high value to a city, creating several opportunities that cultivate the success of future developments. In order to accomplish a successfully integrated project that combines the area “Port” and city, old with the new, past and future, it is important for stakeholders; from both public and private sectors are involved in the decision making process, taking cultural heritage into consideration. Subsequently, the notion of integrating cultural heritage in sustainable developments arises, and by using the contributions of cultural heritage towards influencing the stakeholder’s decision making process; taking into account the necessity of incorporating cultural heritage into their visions. However, with upcoming future developments in Oman, it becomes clear that there are certain challenges that come with forming strategies, and implementing them from both private and public sectors perspectives that remains challenging due to poor collaboration. This research aims to fill in the gap in literature on a specific part of culture integration; which is cultural heritage and its value in sustainable waterfront regenerations. Through identifying the contributions that cultural heritage provide for sustainable waterfront developments, and what opportunities it could create for the society, economy and tourism development of the city, the process of implementation and integration can then be steered by integrating the right management tools in regards to conservation of heritage.

O criptorquidismo é a uma afecção hereditária caracterizada por ausência de um ou ambos os testículos na bolsa escrotal devido à interrupção de seu trajeto normal de migração da cavidade abdominal para a bolsa escrotal. Tal interrupção faz com que o testículo se apresente ectópico, permanecendo no tecido subcutâneo, abdômen ou região do anel inguinal. Para a correção desta patologia, indica-se, na Medicina Veterinária, a criptorquidectomia convencional ou laparoscópica, sendo que a laparoscópica tem se firmado como melhor alternativa devido ao menor trauma tecidual, melhor visualização, menor dor, necessidade de menor analgesia, tempo menor de recuperação do paciente e melhor aspecto do ferimento cirúrgico. Este estudo objetivou desenvolver uma técnica para criptorquidectomia através de um único portal (LESS-single site surgery) utilizando o trocarte Centry Port®, com apenas dois canais de trabalho. Foram utilizados dez coelhos machos, da raça Nova Zelândia e Califórnia, com peso entre 2,8 kg e 3,85 kg. Após a intubação e manutenção do plano anestésico e colocação do animal em posição de Trendelenburg a 200, foi introduzido o Centry Port® aproximadamente a 1 cm cranial à cicatriz umbilical através de incisão de aproximadamente 1,5 cm de extensão. O pneumoperitôneo com CO2 foi estabelecido e mantido durante todos os procedimentos com 10 mm Hg. Por meio de compressão manual o testículo foi introduzido para o interior da cavidade abdominal através do anel inguinal. Após sua visualização e apreensão com uma pinça de Kelly, foi fixado à parede abdominal com auxílio de sutura transparietal. A hemostasia foi realizada com auxílio da eletrocoagulação bipolar regulada em 20 watts. Após a secção do cordão espermático os testículos foram removidos por dentro do trocarte. Ao término dos procedimentos laparoscópicos e após a inspeção da cavidade, foi desfeito o pneumoperitôneo, sendo realizada a sutura da musculatura e da pele. Todos os tempos cirúrgicos foram anotados, para que uma curva de aprendizado fosse avaliada. As intercorrências cirúrgicas não foram clinicamente significativas e o procedimento foi factível em todos os animais do experimento. Os coelhos foram doados após a retirada dos pontos. As maiores dificuldades encontradas com o uso do Centry Port® foram a visualização em linha e o choque entre as mãos do cirurgião e câmera junto ao trocarte. Concluiu-se com este estudo que a técnica de criptorquidectomia por single-port em coelhos, utilizando o Centry Port® é viável e que as dificuldades são superadas na medida em que a equipe estabelece maior experiência com a técnica por um único acesso.

▼ Poverty reduction is a global issue. To address this problem, many development agencies have promoted an analysis approach known as the ‘Sustainable Livelihood Approach’. It is a way to enhance understanding of the livelihoods of poor people. Tourism is often seen as a form of development that might yield sustainable livelihood. Cultural and heritage tourism can provide significant revenue to local people but it can also have a negative impact on the heritage. The UNESCO World Heritage programme recognizes globally significant heritage and such recognition results in an increase of tourism to the heritage site. Thailand’s ‘Historic City of Ayutthaya’ is a UNESCO listed Cultural World Heritage site. Conflicts between the preservation of its ancient monuments, their increased use by tourists and the local vendors has increased public awareness of the site. The site is also an urban area which is in close proximity to a special industrial development zone. This has caused labour immigration, urban development and constructions, some of which have invaded the Historic City of Ayutthaya. This has caused rumours that the city may lose its World Heritage status due to the impacts on its heritage value. This has offered an opportunity to explore the potential impact on the livelihood of its local community. The Sustainable Livelihood Approach was used to frame the research. The methodology component of this approach is ‘Sustainable Livelihood Framework’ that helps in understanding the complexities of poverty and draws out the major factors that affect people’s livelihoods and the relationships between these factors. To collect primary data of five main factors (livelihood capitals, vulnerability, transforming structures and processes, livelihood strategies and livelihood outcomes), semi-structured interviews and observations are used as data collection methods in two main parts: 1) people’s livelihood and 2) the policy and administration concerning people’s livelihood. Content analysis was employed to analyse the primary data. To examine sustainability of livelihoods, primary data of five main factors relating to livelihoods are interpreted through: 1) resilience in the face of external shocks and stresses; 2) dependence on external support; 3) maintenance of long-term productivity of natural resources; and 4) whether the livelihoods undermine the livelihoods of others. The major findings in this research were that 1) for the Sustainable Livelihood Framework to be used in an area, it should include cultural capital in the framework; the Historic City of Ayutthaya has various cultural contexts which can convert to cultural capital that may sustain livelihoods and determine people’s livelihood strategies; and 2) people’s livelihood in the Historic City of Ayutthaya is found to be unsustainable. O presente trabalho estuda o processo de evolução urbana da cidade de Manaus, a arquitetura da Amazônia do início de sua colonização aos dias de hoje, e as características de sua estrutura física que têm contribuído, ou não, com a construção e a preservação de seu patrimônio cultural. Utilizam-se como principais instrumentos de análise os documentos bibliográficos, registros fotográficos, mapas, cartões postais, pinturas, iconografias, listagens do IPHAN e documentos da Prefeitura Municipal de Manaus. Sendo assim, analisa-se o inter-relacionamento dos fatores populacionais, econômicos, socioculturais, político-institucionais e locacionais, que atuaram sobre a cidade em cada período da sua história, procurando destacar de maneira particular, em cada um deles, as funções urbanas e de maneira geral as suas perspectivas. Para tal, dividiu-se a história da arquitetura de Manaus em cinco períodos históricos. Uma vez que muitas das construções identificadas dos períodos estudados não possuem projetos arquitetônicos arquivados na Prefeitura Municipal de Manaus, e a Delegacia Regional do IPHAN só possui quatro bens tombados em Manaus, faz-se necessária a realização de um inventário de identificação do patrimônio local.

The present work studies the whole pocess of the urban evolution of the city Manaus, the architecture from Amazônia from the beginning of its colony till nowadays, and the characteristics of its physical structure that has contributed, or not, with the construction and preservation to the cultural resource. Its been used as a principal source of analyse the bibliographical documents, photographs, maps, postcards, paintings, iconographies, IPHAN notes and the Municipal City Hall of Manaus. This way, we analyse the inter-relationship of population , economical, sociocultural, polititional, institutional, and location facts that acted in each period of history, aiming in a particular way in wich of them, in their urban functions and perspectives. For that, the history of Manaus architecture was divided in five historical periods. Once that many identified constructions from these periods do not posess architectural projects classified in the Municipal City Hall of Manaus, and the Regional Section of IPHAN only posesses four of the tombled buildings in Manaus, it is necessary to make a booking of identification of local buildings.

▼ How much can we learn by analyzing ceramics, the most commonly found artifact type at an archaeological site? During the mid-eighteenth century, English potters introduced creamware, a white-bodied earthenware with a yellow tinted glaze. Creamware is a useful tool in understanding the social, cultural, and economic changes that took place during the late eighteenth century. Creamware was one of the first fashionable wares that was affordable to the "middling sorts." At the Narbonne House in Salem, Massachusetts, a large quantity of creamware was recovered through archaeological excavations, including over 13,000 sherds, comprising over 250 vessels, most of which were owned by the widow Mary Andrew and her family who lived there from 1780–1820. After conducting a minimum vessel count and analysis of style, I concluded that Mary Andrew and her children were purchasing creamware to appear genteel to their family and neighbors. Appearance was important since the Andrews were related to some of Salem's most elite merchant families including the Gardners, Derbys, and Hodges. Being well connected—though not wealthy—Mary Andrew purchased stylish goods that she could afford in larger quantities rather than spending her money on smaller sets of more expensive wares. This conscious decision illustrates that creamware was not only an important mark of gentility, but was also a way to create identity, especially for a well-connected, but not affluent widow. Her husband's final request was that his legacy be used to improve the home, presumably to continue his family's upward mobility in society. Though creamware cannot answer all of the questions we have about the past, it provides us with answers to issues relating to consumer choice and creation of identity through material goods. Many consumer studies in historical archaeology terminate in interpretations of economic status; creamware in particular allows archaeologists and other scholars to explore other motivations concerning consumption and what ownership meant to the family and for people whose voices may otherwise be unheard in history, such as widowed women.

Historical documents emphasize the multi-cultural nature of the Village, but archaeologically there appears to be little evidence of ethnicity (Kardas 1971; Chance and Chance 1976; Thomas and Hibbs 1984:723). Following recent approaches to cultural interaction in which researchers examined the nuanced uses of material culture (Lightfoot et al 1998; Martindale 2009; Voss 2008); this study analyzed the spatial distribution of tobacco pipe fragments for behavioral information through a practice theory approach (Bourdieu 1977; Ortner 2006). The analysis aimed to determine the role of tobacco smoking in the Village. It evaluated tobacco smoking as a significant and social behavior, the visibility of maintenance behaviors in the clay pipe distributions, and evidence of ethnic variation in tobacco consumption. Spatial patterning characteristics were compiled from the few behavioral studies of clay pipe fragments (Davies 2011; Fox 1998: Hamilton 1990; Hartnett 2004; Hoffman and Ross 1973, 1974; King and Miller 1987), and indications of ethnic specific behaviors from archaeological and historical evidence (Burley et al 1992; Jacobs 1958; Jameson 2007). Distributional maps examined three pipe assemblage characteristics: fragment frequency, use wear fragment frequency, and the bowl to stem fragment ratio, to define smoking locations on the Village landscape. Visibility of maintenance and refuse disposal behaviors in the size distribution of fragments was measured through the Artifact Size Index (ASI) (Bon Harper and McReynolds 2011). This analysis also tested two possible indications of ethnic variation: differential use of stone vs. clay pipes, and consumption rates as reflected through clay pipe assemblages. The commonality of tobacco smoking locations across the landscape suggests a significant, social, and shared practice between households. Analysis of maintenance behaviors and ethnic variation proved inconclusive. This study demonstrates the value of spatially analyzing clay pipe fragment distributions for behavioral information. The insight gained from examining multiple spatial patterns suggests future studies can benefit from analyzing the spatial distribution of diagnostic characteristics of pipes and other artifact types. ▼ This thesis used a Design Theory approach to analyze lithic artifacts from the Čḯx^wicən village site, particularly to understand the distinctions between utilitarian and prestige values in the production of lithic tools and their intended role within the society. The Northwest Coast has a variety of resources available; how groups utilized these resources for functional and social purposes is important in understanding behavior choices. The Čḯx^wicən village site was a large permanent settlement originally inhabited by the ancestors of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe between 2,000 years BP to the historical contact period. The site was rediscovered near Port Angeles, where excavations exposed a number of house structures and associated exterior activity areas. This thesis addresses the tools associated with one of the house structures and several exterior areas. The qualities of the materials is important in understanding their value in a society: whether the material has a utilitarian or social value. Design Theory is a suitable method for analyzing artifacts and the materials they are manufactured from to determine these different values. This thesis aims to analyze the lithic artifacts from Block A4 to distinguish between their functional, esteem, and prestige values. My research analyzed 1,515 stone artifacts recovered from Block A4 from the 39,505 total artifacts from Quadrant A. I identified three specific tool industries at Čḯx^wicən village: the production of quartz crystal tools, cortex spall tools, and incised stones. A number of other materials and tools were present at the site, using a combination of reduction manufacturing techniques. Most artifacts had a single material dominating their manufacture, however outliers and variabilities made the design choices of the manufacturers clearer. The results indicated that the majority of artifacts recovered were utilitarian in nature and manufactured expediently. Only a small number of tools required much extensive investment time. Debitage and cortex spall tools dominated the assemblage. Tools intended to manufacture other objects, such as gravers and abraders, were also present and important for creating incised stones and fishhook shanks, as well as modifying organic materials such as bone and shell. A small number of adzes and edged tools from unique materials were identified: these can be considered investment tools or objects. From the analysis, I determined that a new classification of artifact is need: Investment Tools. These objects have the qualities of a prestige good, being of rare material or requiring significant time investment, as well as fulfilling utilitarian needs, that the combination of material and function are too advantageous not to be functional.
