La pop culture japonaise (principalement le manga et l’animation), connaît en France un succès durable depuis plus de trente ans, et attire un public croissant, composé en partie de passionnés très investis. Par ailleurs, cette diffusion n’est pas uniquement circonscrite à la France, il s’agit aujourd’hui d’un succès mondial, avéré et reconnu depuis le début du 21ème siècle.C’est dans ce contexte que s’inscrit cette thèse, qui s’efforce de montrer comment se fait la relation entre goût pour la pop culture nippone, imaginaire du Japon et désir de voyage. Nous nous intéresserons donc aux fans devenus touristes, qui mobilisent pour ce séjour les images qu’ils ont élaborés du Japon via la familiarité entretenue avec sa pop culture. Prenant pour modèle le cadre de l’anthropologie du tourisme, cette présentation se fera en trois parties, qui correspondent aux trois temps du voyage. Tout d’abord, nous nous intéresserons à l’avant-voyage, moment où s’élabore l’imaginaire d’une destination. Nous nous pencherons ensuite sur le temps du séjour, pendant lequel les visiteurs jouent le jeu de l’immersion en superposant images préalables et expérience en situation. Enfin, nous aborderons l’après-voyage, en essayant de comprendre comment ce phénomène fait écho sur le territoire japonais, et engendre reconnaissance et légitimation des productions de pop culture, qui est alors comprise comme un témoignage de la spécificité de l’identité japonaise.Le fil conducteur de cette recherche est donc la légitimation de la pop culture, qui passe par son plébiscite en dehors de l’Archipel, dans un mouvement de reconnaissance qui entremêle regards étrangers et autochtones.

Japanese pop culture (manga and animation) has been successful in France for more than thirty years now, and it attracts more and more audience, with very deep lovers as a part of it. Anyway, this diffusion is not only a French phenomenon, as it has been a recognized and acknowledged success since the beginning of the 21st century.This is the frame of this research, which aims to show how the taste for Japanese pop culture, the imaginary of the country and the desire to visit it are linked. We will look at fans of Japanese pop culture and how they become tourists, since they use for the travel the pictures they have built about Japan through their strong intimacy with its pop culture.Taking the anthropology of tourism as a model, this presentation is divided in three parts, which are the three moments of a travel. Firstly, we are going to look at the moment before the trip, when the imaginary of the place is built. Then, we will move during the stay, when travelers are trying to immerge themselves in the country, using their previous picture of place and superimposing it to their concrete experience. So, we will conclude with the third stage, after the stay, trying to understand how this phenomenon is echoing into Japanese territory. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, aktuelle Informationen über die Popularität der koreanischen Popkultur zu erhalten und die Wahrnehmung der Geschlechterrollen von K-Pop Fans auf empirischer Grundlage zu beleuchten. Basierend auf Theorien des Gender-Schemas bietet die vorliegende Arbeit Einblick in Stereotype und Sexualisierung in den Medien sowie in die konfuzianistische Tradition und Identität Koreas als auch in Thesen und Theorien der Hallyu-Welle. Hypothesen und Forschungsfragen basieren auf Theorien von Gender Mainstreaming, Geschlechterstereotypen und Sexualisierung und berücksichtigen die kulturellen Umstände in Korea. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Daten mittels eines Online-Fragebogens experimentell erhoben. Mit diesen Daten können folgende Punkte festgehalten werden: Während weder für Männer noch für Frauen der K-Pop Szene signifikante Anzeichen einer stereotypischen Zuordnung von Merkmalen gefunden wurden, zeigt die Studie ein interessantes Profil der K-Pop Community. Ein wichtiger Fund ist, dass die Fans überdurchschnittlich viel Zeit im Internet verbringen und somit verschiedenen Medienbeeinflussungen ausgesetzt sind. In Kombination mit den egalitären Online-Community-Interaktionen, die von Websites, die besonders von K-Pop Fans genutzt werden, angeboten werden, wird aufgrund der Ergebnisse dieser Studie ein starker Einfluss auf die Wahrnehmung von Geschlechterrollen durch das Fandom angenommen. Zusammenfassend gibt diese Studie einen interessanten Einblick in die aktuelle Situation des Gender-Mainstreaming von Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen am Beispiel koreanischer Popmusik. Natürlich müssen die beschriebenen Befunde im Hinblick auf die Grenzen der vorliegenden Studie berücksichtigt werden. Vor allem aufgrund der Selbstreflexion der Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen muss die Repräsentativität der Ergebnisse in Frage gestellt werden. Diese Arbeit bietet jedoch zumindest einen Einblick in die allgemeine Auffassung von Geschlechterrollenkonzepten unter Fans der koreanischen Popkultur.

The aim of this work was to provide up-to-date information on the popularity of Korean pop culture and to shed light on the perception of gender roles of K-Pop fans by the means of an empirical study. Based on gender schema theory, the present work provides insight into stereotypes and sexualization in the media as well as into the Confucian tradition and identity of Korea, including theories regarding the Hallyu Wave. Hypotheses and research questions are based on theories of gender mainstreaming, gender stereotypes and sexualization, while taking into account the cultural circumstances in Korea. For this purpose, data was collected by the means of a scientific experiment using an online questionnaire. The following points can be recorded with this data: While no significant signs of stereotypic attribution of characteristics for neither men nor women in k-pop could be found, the study shows an interesting profile of the K-Pop community. ▼ Identities are constructed using various tools, both linguistic and non-linguistic. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between ideologies (images/understandings/views), linguistic styles, other aspects of style (e.g., clothing and physical appearances) and identity construction in the social interactions of Japanese female pop-idols (i.e., aidoru), taking as its basis theories and methods from sociolinguistics and anthropology. In this research, CD jacket covers, song lyrics and documentaries were analyzed from two aidoru groups from different time periods, Onyanko Club in the 1980s and AKB48 in the present era of the 2010s. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses reveal (1) how aidoru are portrayed in the images on CD covers and song lyrics, and whether contemporary portrayals of aidoru images differ from those in the past, (2) how aidoru view aidoru identity and position themselves accordingly, (3) has the aidoru ideology, including images and social expectations, have changed over time, and (4) what kind of linguistic features aidoru use to project certain identities, and whether contemporary language use of aidoru differ from the past. The findings in the present study point to a multitude of identities for aidoru. Images on CD jacket covers, lyric content, and linguistic features in lyrics suggest that Onyanko Club embodies young female, kawaii “cute” identities, based on the members’ smiling faces, school uniforms, colorful accessories, and cutesy costumes. On the other hand, AKB48 demonstrates not only kawaii images, but also more complex traits including sexy, kakkoii “cool,” and even toughness, drawing from their various expressions which depict the members as sometimes smiling, but also sometimes serious and stern; their costumes including both cutesy and boyish school uniforms, bikinis, and tough martial arts’ garb. Thematic discourse analysis has demonstrated how AKB48 members maintain some aspects of cute and innocent aidoru identities but additionally, they portray seemingly atypical aidoru identities including demonstrating professionalism and leadership. Turning to the use of language in conversation, the quantitative results indicate that Onyanko Club members employ both masculine and feminine expressions more frequently than AKB48 members. Japanese pop culture has seen intense globalization and has therefore received much attention worldwide. However, research on aidoru from a sociolinguistic standpoint has, as of yet, been underperformed. The present research argues that such analysis is an important step in revealing the links between language use, identity construction, and social ideologies. The findings generate implications for researchers interested in sociolinguistics, gender studies, anthropology, Japanese pop culture, and media studies. A organização de fãs para colocar em circulação conteúdos midiáticos de seus interesses, independentemente do mercado, modifica os fluxos comunicacionais tradicionais levando a diferentes paradigmas. Esta pesquisa, como integrante da linha de Estratégias Midiáticas e Práticas Comunicacionais do Mestrado em Comunicação e Linguagens da UTP, busca entender como ocorre o processo de aquisição, tradução, edição e distribuição de mangás (histórias em quadrinhos japonesas) feito por fãs brasileiros na internet, chamado de scanlation, para refletir sobre esta e outras práticas comunicacionais de fãs que se fortalecem com a internet em paralelo às indústrias. Portanto, primeiramente defini-se o que é ser um fã e, em específico, o otaku, o fã de cultura pop japonesa, assim como abordagens teóricas do tema. Após, são trazidas informações sobre os mangás, tanto no Japão como no Brasil. Em seguida, explica-se como é realizado o scanlation, além de serem abordadas reflexões a cerca da produção e consumo num contexto maior. Por fim, através de entrevistas realizadas com os fãs, chega-se à análise de scanlators brasileiros, para mostrar como a prática ocorre no país. A base teórica é formada por autores da cibercultura e fandom, como Pierre Lévy e Henry Jenkins, além de autores da cultura pop japonesa, como Sonia Luyten, entre outros. The organization of fans to put in circulation mediatic contents of their interest, independently from market, modify traditional communication fluxes reveling different paradigms. This research, as integrated of the Mediatic Strategies and Communicational Practices research line of Universidade Tuiuti do Paranás Mastership in Communication and Languages, tries to understand how occurs the process of acquisition, translation, edition and distribution of manga (Japanese comics) done by Brazilian fans on the internet, called scanlation, to reflect about this and others fans communicational practices which grow with the internet in parallel to the industries. Therefore, initially it is defined what is to be a fan and, in specific, an otaku, the Japanese pop cultures fan, besides theoretical approaches of it. After, information about manga in Brazil and Japan is brought. Next, it is explained how scanlation is done, moreover reflections about production and consummation, in a large context, are made. For last, from interviews with fans, it is analyzed Brazilian scanlators, to show how the practice is done in the country. The theoretical basis of this research is formed by cyberculture and fandom authors, such as Pierre Lévy and Henry Jenkins, besides of Japanese pop culture authors, such as Sonia Luyten, and others. Avec l’apparition des chaînes musicales au début des années 1980, l’industrie musicale investit massivement dans la production de clips vidéo. Pour répondre à la forte demande de clips, de nombreux réalisateurs venant aussi bien de la télévision, de la publicité, que du cinéma mirent tous leur talent au service de ce nouveau format télévisuel. C’est dans ce contexte que différents artistes visuels furent également sollicités ou proposèrent leur service pour réaliser différents clips. Au début des années 1980, le clip apparut à certains artistes comme le format idéal pour diffuser leurs images à la télévision. Il leur permettait par sa diffusion à la télévision de toucher un plus large public que celui des musées ou des galeries d’art. Pour d’autres, le clip fut un format d’expérimentation mais aussi un prolongement possible pour leur pratique artistique. Ainsi cette étude se propose d’analyser une partie de la production de certains artistes plasticiens souvent ignorée par les historiens de l’art et les critiques. À travers leurs travaux artistiques, certains artistes construisirent au contraire une critique et interrogèrent le format tout en remettant en question la pop culture diffusée à la télévision. Si la création de MTV fut une date fondatrice dans l’histoire du clip vidéo, vingt-cinq ans plus tard, l’avènement de YouTube et des sites de partage de vidéos dès 2005 marqua un grand changement dans la production mais aussi dans la consommation de clips vidéo. Nous verrons que cela entraina de nouveaux usages pour les utilisateurs pour les artistes qui s’emparèrent des contenus disponibles pour les détourner.

With the advent of music channels in the early 1980s, the music industry invested heavily in the production of music videos. To meet the high demand of music video, many filmmakers from television industry, advertising, cinema put their talents in this new TV format service. It is in this context that different visual artists were also requested and proposed their services to direct different music videos. In the early 1980s, the clip appeared some artists as the ideal format to distribute their images on television. It allowed them by its broadcast on television to reach a wider audience than museums or art galleries. For others, the clip was an experimental format, but also a potential extension to their artistic practice. So this study will analyze some of the production of certain visuals artists often ignored by art historians and critics. Through their artworks, some artists built instead a critique and questioned the format while challenging pop culture broadcast on television. If the creation of MTV was a funding event in the history of the music video, twenty-five years later, the advent of YouTube and in 2005 marked a big change in production but also in consumption of music videos. We will see that it led to new uses for Internet users and for artists who took possession available content to divert it.

The work explores the Pop Art movement as developed in New York in the 1960s, highlighting the general cultural context of American reality at the same time, codified through Pop Culture. Due to socio-economic conditions and technological developments taking place after the end of World War II, the mass cultural phenomenon was now intertwined with the american modern way of life, catalyzing the reconstruction of national identity. The semantics of the cultural object because a mass dialect, perceived by the whole population, was the main reference point for the management of the visual object by Pop Art. The methodology followed by the scientific study sets the art movement as a tool for historical reading of the character of Pop Culture. The thematic and stylistic spectrum of Pop Art is approached as a reflection of the way in which commercial-type cultural trends are regulated by social, economic and political parameters. The first part of the work deals with the theoretical background and description of Pop Culture in the 1960s, the handling of the concept of mass by Modernism and its historical influences on the formation of Pop Art, as well as the special context of the art movement during its heyday in New York. The second part focuses on the analysis of selected thematic sections by five leading representatives of Pop Art in the American metropolis, in order to relate their personal artistic stigma to the customised perception and experience of Pop Culture. The final chapter is a brief study of Neo-Pop in New York in the 1980s to highlight the timeless influence of Pop Art as the historical visual symbol of Pop Culture's equation with modern American realism. The paper clarifies the agreement between the art movement and the ideological and methodological framework of Avant-garde, as the accuracy of subject matter facilitates the reorganization of form. Concerns are being raised about Pop Art's ironic, detached view of reality and the difficulty of its secure theoretical verification. The similar difficulty in interpreting mass cultural trends with conventional analytical tools due to their complex levels of empathy documents Pop Art's approach as part of Pop Culture and its visual symbol. Conclusions are drawn on the aesthetic evaluation of industrial products, the reassessment of commercial creativity, the educational role of Pop Culture by composing contradictory conditions such as liberal democracy, aggressive capitalism, intense class differences and the development of collectives based on individual peculiarities. Alongside, the assimilation of basic rules of Pop Culture by the art system is ascertained, assimilating artistic quality with the professional one and reducing cultural institutions to extroverted business organizations. Pop Art in New York in the 1960s is a landmark of the Avant-garde, as the universally irreversible character of Pop Culture has pushed for a constant feedback of art from life and life from art.

▼ Abstract This thesis investigates issues of representation and the social identity of the colonized by conducting a textual analysis of a fictive, construct that I dub the halfbreed girl, and of the ways in which selected metisse writers, poets, artists and performers respond to that stereotype in their respective works. Using methodologies in literature and the visual/performing arts, this thesis interrogates matters of social process: specifically, settler-colonialism’s discursive management of the social identities – in effect, the social place – of metis women, and how metis women negotiate this highly raced and gendered identity space. Emphasizing Canadian contexts, the images examined are drawn from North American settler-colonial pop-culture texts produced in the late nineteenth- through the early twentyfirst centuries; the metisse responses to them are gathered from the same time period. The thesis includes American-produced images of the halfbreed girl due to the historic relationship between the two nations and the significant consumption of mass-produced American pop-culture media by Canadians – historically and currently. The first tier of the study demonstrates how the figure of the halfbreed girl is rendered abject through textual strategies that situate her at the intersection of the dichotomies, civilization/savagery and Madonna/whore, generating the racialized Princess/squaw polemic. The logic of the Princess/squaw polemic further reticulates into three sub-binaries: White/Indian, mimesis/regression, and naturalness/degeneracy, compounding the abjection of the halfbreed girl, who oscillates along and between these binaries, relegating her to a state of perpetual liminality in the settler-colonial master narrative. The thesis also finds that these textual strategies tend to reflect the processes of social abjection to which metis women were subjected in actuality, as exemplified by the deteriorating social status of historical metisses in nineteenth-century Canada. The second tier of the study finds that metisse auteurs are indeed cognizant of this social construction–and subsequent abjection–of themselves as an Indigenous ‘other’ in settler-colonial pop-culture discourse, and incorporate this awareness, along with elements of the stereotypical halfbreed girl, into their respective embodiments of metisse-ness in their selected works. However, they do not respond uniformly to images of the halfbreed girl that situate them as a liminal entity, nor necessarily receive them uncritically. Rather, their works exhibit variegated reactions—from internalization to various modalities of resistance—as they grapple with aspects of the halfbreed girl in their own performances and/or texts. ▼ This dissertation study aims to identify the role of national markets in the regional flow of pop culture, focusing on how national markets react to foreign pop cultures and take advantage of them. Taking the international popularity of South Korean pop culture, called “Korean Wave,” or “Hallyu” in Japan as the case, this study analyzes the discourse of Japan’s mainstream media from 2009 to 2016 in order to find out the national market's role and desire behind the regional and transnational flow of pop culture. The findings show that the Japanese media attended to the benefits coming from the boom. In political dimension, the Korean Wave was regarded as significant as a symbol of cultural exchange and mutual understandings. The two-way flow of culture was considered as necessary, and Japanese politicians, celebrities, and fans reproduced the traditional image of bridges between Japan and Korea. Paying attention to the economic effects, the Japanese media took advantage of the Korean Wave contents’ advertising effect as product placement. While the Japanese domestic economy and local governments benefited from the Korean Wave contents for town revitalization and new business opportunities, the product placement effect in the international market was viewed as a threat to the international presence of Japan and its economy. In terms of the pop culture market, although the Japanese media and pop culture industry continuously introduced and promoted Korean Wave contents, with the desire to have the superiority of the Japanese market confirmed hidden in the background. After all, the Korean Wave in Japan was presented and promoted within the Japanese system operating its pop culture industry and based on the contributions that the Korean pop culture made to the Japanese society. When such values do not exist any more, there is little need for the Japanese media to report and promote the Korean Wave. The desire of the larger markets such as Japan suggests that the Korean Wave phenomenon, which has been regarded to have complicated existing power structures, may represent a new form in which the status quo is reproduced in a different way. ▼ This thesis shows the process and results of a graduation project for the Effenaar, Eindhoven. The music industry has always been capricious. However, the densely dispersed Dutch pop venue landscape is being faced with a contemporary challenge. A lot of Dutch pop venues are balancing between the public and private sector, have a big heritage weighing down on their shoulders, have complex business models with various stakeholders stuck in their silos and often lack a coherent vision. The world around them however is changing fast and vastly. The digitalization of the music industry has shifted medium sized artists’ reason for performing from creating awareness for an upcoming album to their main source of income. Resulting in a more demanding artist and less power for the pop venues. For pop venues to succeed, they either have to be the biggest or the most specialized. The Effenaar at this point is neither of those two. Based on these challenges the following research question is formulated: “How can a Dutch pop music venue, in a co-creative manner, ready itself for and position itself within the vastly changing pop music industry of 2028? – a case study of the Effenaar, Eindhoven.” A 2028 worldview was created by using the ViP method. Conducting research and interviewing key stakeholders resulted in numerous context factors. These context factors created a storyline from which three main consequences for the Effenaar could be concluded. The disconnection between artist and audience in combination with visitor’s increasing demand for multi-sensory stimulating and layered experience results in the first consequence for the Effenaar; ‘Artists need help connecting to their audience’. Secondly, the digitalization of pop culture will be almost fully completed in 2028. This presents a whole range of new pop culture artists. The online realm possesses a vast array of new pop stars. These new groups could benefit from a medium sized offline stage in Eindhoven. This resulted in the second consequence; ‘Music no longer the main relevant form of artistry in pop culture’. Finally, the digitalization of pop culture results in another consequence. Online available data will put the control in the hands of the artists. Due to qualitative and quantitative data of their followers, artist can among other things decide at which pop venue or festival they want to perform. This results in the last consequence; ‘Artists decide if the Effenaar is suitable. In-house bookers will become obsolete’. Through the narration of short stories, the worldview, its consequences on the Effenaar and a glimpse into a possible reaction are illustrated. These stories depict the consequences of the 2028 future on the Effenaar, its artists and visitors. Three main ingredients are formulated for the Effenaar to respond on the 2028 worldview.
