▼ If we desire the preservation of public spaces, then liberalism is not a suitable framework to this end. The discursive nature of liberalism combined with the
political liberalist value of neutrality renders disagreements about public
space inert. This is connected to a desire to reduce interference that I argue is at the heart of increased privatization of public spaces. Liberalism abstracts too far from land, making it inappropriate for navigating issues that are about the physicality of public
space itself. Liberalism hierarchizes uses of public
space, facilitated through liberal conceptions of land as property. I suggest three alternative theories that could better frame public
space: 1) solidarism, 2) an ethical-ecological approach, and finally, 3) an Indigenous approach that centers the project of decolonization. These frameworks do not imply liberal property ownership, and they hold potential for public
space – and therefore land – being a more integrated part of our communities.

▼ The Chair of Interiors Buildings Cities located this year’s graduation project in the capital city of Belgium and the European Union, Brussels. Under the theme of ‘Palace’, the project is a City Hall on the previous site of the Les Halles Centrales in the 1870s, and is also known as the site for the earlier demolished Parking 58. The site will be soon occupied by ‘BruCity’, a new city administrative centre that will house 1500 employees of la Ville de Bruxelles, and this presented us the opportunity to critique whether the new fully glazed monument could really represent its governance transparency and offer the
space where the citizens could have their
political agency presented. Corridor was the major design motif and project’s thematic narrative. The outside room, corridor, as an informal
space has its capability and power of accommodating the occurrence of the real negotiations happening before people entering the formal proceedings. The definition of corridor was broken down into a series of connective spaces. By the introduction of the corridor-ness in the project, it also aims to change and promote the working practice for a city hall which is the forefront of addressing the urgency of change in today’s society.

▼ Commemoratives sites, as the term might suggest, are most often evaluated in the transitional justice literature in relationship to time. Scholars debate if and to what extent commemorative sites can leverage history and memory in service of peace, justice, and/or reconciliation. Alternatively, these same spaces have been critiqued as counterproductive to the transitional cause. They are constant reminders of trauma, hollow gestures, and continually vulnerable to politicization as the powerful attempt to manipulate history in service of a particular narrative. While these debates remain relevant, commemorative sites are not just analogs of memory, they are also public or communal spaces. Commemorative sites are a unique mechanism in transitional justice for their physicality, and as such, should be evaluated for their spatial qualities. This study uses planning/design literature to offer a new analytical lens to the study of commemorative sites as transitional approach.
Based on observational, archival and interview case study evidence in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and Inhambane province in Mozambique, I argue that a commemorative site is more than just the product of its narration. It represents the evolution and potential of the spatial landscape in post-conflict life. In both South Africa and Mozambique, the ability to create and/or use these kinds of spaces implicate critical sociopolitical relationships for transitioning societies, particularly dynamics of ownership. Individuals and communities become stakeholders in the
political system as they are empowered to or prohibited from leaving a fingerprint on the (re)design and function of their physical environment. These same consumers continue to control how such spaces are used and to what end. They can be places of gathering, exchange, interaction, confrontation, and debate, or they can be left unused and idle. Whether through assertion or acknowledgement, commemorative sites serve as a living expression of ownership over the built and natural environment. The practice of commemoration is of course highly variable across the cases outlined in the following chapters, but the question of
space is hugely consequential, sometimes even superseding concerns of memory and heritage. The spatial politics of commemorative sites can be constructive or conflictual, but is exemplary of how the design and use of commemorative spaces is a layered
political project and suggestive of the way in which commemorative sites might serve as a more sophisticated or holistic approach to transitional justice.

▼ This thesis examines civil society, political space, and peacebuilding in post-war Burundi by critically engaging with international discourses and considering the extent to which they reflect the experiences and perspectives of activists on the ground. It is based on qualitative research with civil society groups and the individuals that work for them in Burundi. Fieldwork took place over five months between July 2014 and April 2015. This was a period of crisis in which civil society faced mounting restrictions, from the introduction of legislation that banned public gatherings, to the harassment and intimidation of prominent activists. The thesis analyses the extent to which civil society groups were able to navigate these constraints to create and maintain spaces for peace that transform dominant social norms which produce violence and repression. It also considers the factors that frustrated these efforts, from the sustained influence of past violence and trauma, to the climate of fear and uncertainty that emerged following the 2015 elections, and the divisive elite politics that continues to disrupt everyday peace in Burundi. It finds that emerging policy discourses on political space fail to engage with the historical, political, and discursive nature of government restrictions in Burundi, and the temporal and relational dimensions of violence, especially the ways in which it shapes the everyday lives of activists and their ability to challenge the institutions and structures within which violence is reproduced. The research situates these experiences in historical context â a process that enables it to consider broader questions about the evolution of civil society and the extent to which it becomes embedded in post-conflict contexts once international funding and attention decreases and external peacebuilding activities conclude. Civil society groups in Burundi received significant support from the international community in the post-war years, yet increasing restrictions suggest that the Burundian government has not accepted the presence of certain organisations which it views as a threat to its political authority and legitimacy. This leads the thesis to argue that curbs on civil society should be seen as part of a broader pattern of resistance to international peacebuilding in Burundi.

▼ My dissertation situates issues of urban space, place and renewal within a larger context of historical social memory. An open urban space that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, the once-beautiful urban Fulton Mall in Fresno, CA served as abandoned parkland contested by city leaders and community members alike until a controversial infrastructure project began in 2016. I developed an ethnographic project of the site and the dynamics of local narrative. My research agenda concerns several key questions: How does social memory influence the construction of identity and citizenship at the local political level? How does the revitalization of open urban space play into this construction as the mechanism of a changing sense of citizenship? This small local contest about space is theoretically significant to the broader urban anthropology discipline, and was investigated ethnographically to best capture this particular contestation as historically and culturally-situated.The Fulton Mall’s revitalization serves as a test case for issues of space and community all urban centers will eventually confront, and are important to the master narratives of placemaking.Redevelopment construction on the mall happened during my fieldwork(2015-2017) and added a component of urgency to my research while also affording me the opportunity to see continuing citizen action unfold. My ethnographic evidence suggests that the political discussion engendered by the proposed changes and current revitalization of the Fulton Mall in Fresno is really a contestation of identity, in which the social memory of a community is highlighted and positioned in direct contest to the larger forces of a postmodern movement to manufacture space first, community second. My research highlights the focus on fiscal matters driving local planning projects as they relate to economic markets and city boosterism, not community desires, needs or history.

While the population of western democracies is less and less involved in politics, digital tools would seem to offer new possibilities to remobilize citizens. Political blogs can allow new people to publish their political opinions online. In addition to existing political and media spaces, a newspace of discussion and publication of political ideas would thus appear, allowing every citizen to participate and to be widely read. The question for research is whether political blogs today allow a new type of political message producer to reach a new audience. We demonstrate that only bloggers having previous visibility in the classic media field, due to their political or professional positions, can have a large audience on their blog. Far from having allowed new producers of political messages to attain a large audience, the political blogosphere seems on the contrary embedded in the political and media fields, of which it largely extends the hierarchies. Our work, accordingly, tends to invalidate the idea of a political blogosphere which, according to the cyber-optimistic thesis, would have allowed new producers of political messages to get new audience.

This book addresses everybody with a
serious interest in politics, especially those
who are concerned with the role of ordinary
citizens in the government of public affairs.
It investigates the relation between political
action and space. The central question is:
How do the spaces where citizens are
supposed to / would like to participate in
politics influence their engagement? How
does the immediate surrounding affect if
citizens act, what they do, and what results
from their engagement? The fundamental
assumption is that there are better and
worse spaces for acting politically, just as
there are better and worse spaces for
learning, playing football or drinking coffee.
This book wants to find out what it actually
is that makes a space better or worse from
the perspective of political actors. Based on
the writings of Hannah Arendt, it first
carves out the meaning of political action
and then derives from this conceptualisation
a set of principles of good political space.
The more a particular space embodies these
principles, the better it will be for political
actors. The principles can be applied not
only to evaluate existing political spaces but
also to improve them and to design new
political spaces. The book closes with a
series of case studies that may be
understood as exercises in analysing urban
political spaces designed by or for ordinary
citizens. Each essay reveals the importance
of space for political action from a different
angle. By and large, the point that this book
wants to drive home is the following: If in
the future more citizens should / will
become engaged in politics more directly,
then we need to pay close attention to the
spaces they use!

▼ Post-Cold War trends in national
space-capability building and the liberalization of the global
space economy have expanded the concerns of states in international astropolitics from security as such to other issue areas, including safety, economic growth and social development, and sustainability. Since the beginning of the 21st Century, the constellation of international
space regimes has continued to expand, while the global governing architecture has fragmented. Within a ‘regime complex’ analytical framework, this work presents two interpretive narratives of the strategic, functional and organizational aspects that explain the design and evolution of ‘the regime complex of global
space security governance’ and ‘the GNSSs regime complex’. The case studies chart the dynamics of international
space politics and analyze the growing structural fragmentation of the complex global scheme of
space governance. An additional enabling factor such as innovation was identified as vital to reinforce the growth of regime complex in global
space governance.

▼ Rare earth elements are not rare at all. They are essential for the hardware of contemporary life as we know it, every contemporary industrialized society depends on them, and there are no known alternatives. Yet the geography of their production is strange. In 2009, China accounted for 97% percent of global production, with the majority coming from the Bayan Obo mine operated by the state-owned enterprise Baotou Rare Earth Group on the southern Mongolian steppe. When gradually intensifying export quotas combined with a temporary halt of official exports in 2010, the rest of the world woke up to its near total dependence on China’s rare earth monopoly. To address this crisis, a Brazilian firm (Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração) determined to capture rare earths from its niobium mine tailings in the state of Minas Gerais. Betting on the willingness of downstream firms to pay a premium for non-Chinese rare earths and subsidizing the effort with revenues from their niobium sales, they resolved to produce a steady output of rare earth oxides regardless of global market fluctuations. In 2012, CBMM successfully produced high-purity rare earth oxides. In 2013, the US, EU, and Japan won a WTO case against China’s rare earth export quotas, restoring some semblance of the global status quo. But the story does not end there.Despite the relative ubiquity of rare earth elements, the abundance of known reserves near existing infrastructure networks, and the dissolution of the 2010 crisis, global prospecting efforts—with the aid of national governments and militaries—have targeted São Gabriel da Cachoeira in the high Amazon and the Western Lunar Highlands on the Moon as the next major points on the global rare earth frontier. This dissertation addresses the question: Given that rare earth elements are both abundant and vital, why is their production driven to so few, seemingly remote places? This question immediately begets three others: through what processes did China’s Bayan Obo mine emerge as the single greatest source of rare earth elements worldwide? What provoked changes in China’s policy and practice, and how did this precipitate spatial transformations elsewhere? And for what purposes are state, military, and private actors pursuing rare earth mining in São Gabriel da Cachoeira and the Moon? This dissertation proposes that the strange geography of the global rare earth frontier can be explained by world-historical shifts in the global division of toxic labor occurring within a context of state-building and geopolitical contest. It thus advances three claims. First, China’s monopoly emerged through a convergence of long-term historical processes shaping northern China in the context of early 20th century imperialism, Cold War politics, and the epochal global economic shifts precipitated by Deng Xiaoping’s 1978 reforms and the Reagan/Thatcher revolution. Second, the change in China’s political economic priorities from export dominance to conservation has been stimulated by the acute environmental and…

▼ This dissertation is concerned with the topic of storytelling, and by extension narrative, in the works of Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt. My interest is aimed not only at storytelling as a topic in the authors’ works, but also at storytelling as it becomes a compositional element of their respective theoretic narratives. From the perspective of theoretic reflection my study has two major themes: narrative and the ‘break in tradition,’ and narrative and
space. Both these aspects arise from specific historical,
political and philosophical conditions in modernity that I address throughout my work. My reading of Benjamin and Arendt presupposes that the ‘break in tradition,’ which is a terminology found in both authors, is an experience that fundamentally shapes their thinking and writing.
In the course of approaching the tradition, narrative undergoes in Benjamin and Arendt a process of dissolution, and then what the former calls at one point the ‘restitution of the epic.’ I demonstrate how, in the course of this ‘restitution,’ properties of narrative become visible that were formerly concealed, and I propose that in both authors a new awareness and application of spatial principles in narrative arises. In this context I focus on the functional and compositional aspects of
space for narrative, and the consequences this emphasis of
space has for the writer – reader relationship. Concerning
space in narrative my study thus implements a distinction between
space as place or topos, and
space as an inherent, formative element of narrative. In general the aim of my dissertation is to open up and present (again) from a unique angle the question of narrative possibilities in modern theoretic discourse.

▼ This research investigates the role of a contested plot of green
space located on private land within a formerly blighted neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. Employing a combination of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and archival research, this work investigates the physical and symbolic constructions of the park, arguing that they have changed in line with larger neighborhood processes. Known at one point as NAYA Park, the
space has been a site of contestation since around 2005, when those originally responsible for its construction were priced out of the neighborhood. Subjected to increased development pressures in an ascendant neighborhood, the park has continued to be used as a public amenity by some in the neighborhood, while at the same time remaining private land. Moving from hazard to amenity to contested
space as the neighborhood moved from blight to redevelopment, spaces such as NAYA Park exist at an important intersection, providing much of the aforementioned benefits of a public park, while simultaneously being left to the whims of the private real estate market. Despite
political ecology’s traditional emphasis on environmental activism and site-level resource conflict, contestations over vacant lots, green
space, and other forms of open
space in the city remain under examined in the field. Case studies tend to either treat the city itself as the unit of analysis or predominantly deal with formalized forms of urban nature. Failing to see vacant lots and other undeveloped spaces as crucial spaces of urban nature not only misses much of the story of how both nature and capital is manifest and intersects in the city, but simultaneously glosses over the agency of local actors in shaping their communities. As shown in this work, the implications such informal sites hold for greater understandings of urban nature could be fruitful and warrant further investigation within the field of urban
political ecology.

▼ This thesis provides an analysis of claims about veiling in parliamentary debates between 2007 and
2019. In my research, I have further build on Saharso and Lettinga’s work, who have analyzed public debates about veiling (1999-2006). Developments of the past fourteen years called for a comprehensive analysis of the use of frames in
political debates with an updated framework to see if these developments signify new (clusters of) frames. I have defined five clusters of frames: (1) state-church frames, (2) integration frames, (3) discrimination frames, (4) gender frames, and (5) security frames. Based on a content analysis of parliamentary debates, I conclude that there have been developments in debates about veiling, which signify either new frames or new clusters of frames. Research showed that the use of security frames indeed signifies a new cluster of frames, particularly resonant in burqa debates. Another observation is that the integration, discrimination and gender frames are part of larger debates and, in contrast to the state-church and security frames, cannot be linked to particular debates or specific public realms, neither can they be organized in time. While the discrimination frames seem to be a separate cluster in relation to the integration frames, this does not mean that the
integration frames have become less relevant in debates about veiling. Another outcome is that the
Judeo-Christian heritage frame is incidentally used in parliamentary debates and does not represent a
certain trend or development. Lastly, the state-church frames are still relevant in debates about veiling, particularly in debates about accommodation of headscarves in the police force.

▼ For my graduation project, I aimed to explore the way in which the new economy of reusing existing building materials or complete structures can be used in a large building project such as the new town hall in Brussels and how it can serve as an exemplar to its surroundings. The project entails the appropriation of an existing corporate office building along the Boulevard de Anspach in Brussels. This building stems from 1969 and was part of the 'Brusselization'. This modernization resulted in many unattractive and rather outdated buildings. Since the office tower was built amid these innovations, this graduation project is a manifesto on how to deal with the inheritance of this modernization. Moreover, what should a municipality embody or represent to its citizens and passers-by? While elaborating on the theme of 'a political space' I focussed on exposing existing qualities/structures by claiming and appropriating a piece of urban space for its proximity.

▼ Globalization and its antecedent neoliberalism have brought untold competition amongst
global cities. As cities strive to bid for the highest order in terms of maintaining and attracting
both local and foreign investments as well as tourists, it is imperative to build socially cohesive,
environmentally friendly and economically competitive cities as these attributes have become
key essential. However, not every city has the financial means to undertake such obligations so
they often resort to the formation of public-private partnerships, a phenomenon often termed
as Business Improvement Districts, for the attainment of such goals.
More often than not the concept of Business Improvement Districts has been criticized for
weakening the publicness of public spaces as they restrict social interaction, constrain
individual liberties and exclude undesirable populations through the use of spatially controlled
measures such as surveillance policing, law techniques and design measures that 'code' spaces
as private. On the contrary, the concept has been commended for regenerating or rejuvenating
public spaces, which have mostly fallen victim to crime and grime, hence improving the
publicness of contemporary public spaces.
Using a qualitative research methodology, the study empirically sought to identify the factors
which contribute to privatization of public spaces. Moreover, the objective of the study was to
identify the characteristics of privatized public spaces and their implications on socio-
political
and spatial landscapes. To accomplish the stated objectives, the study examined 11 public
spaces within the City of Cape Town’s City Improvement Districts, through observation
methods that were guided by Németh’s index scoring sheet, and an interview schedule to
solicit information. Also, relevant literatures were reviewed on the topic to accomplish the
stated objectives. Findings were that the Cape Town City improvement District is a public private
partnership which often employs measures such as laws, rules, surveillance, policing,
accessibility, territoriality, design and image to encourage or discourage freedom of usage.
Recommendations were presented to urban planners, architects, policy makers, and other
stakeholders who are interested in management and provision of public spaces.

▼ Historians of the early space age have established a norm whereby President Eisenhower's actions are judged solely as a response to the launch of the Sputnik satellite, and are indicative of a passive, negative presidency. His low-key actions are seen merely as a prelude to the US triumph in space in the 1960s. This study presents an alternative view showing that Eisenhower’s space policy was not a reaction to the heavily-propagandised Soviet satellite launches, or even the effect they caused in the US political and military elites, but the continuation of a strategic track. In so doing, it also contributes to the reassessment of the wider Eisenhower presidency. Having assessed the development of three intersecting discourses: Eisenhower as president; the genesis of the US space programme; and developments in Cold War US reconnaissance, this thesis charts Eisenhower’s influence both on the ICBM and reconnaissance programmes and his support for a non-military approach to the International Geophysical Year. These actions provided the basis for his space policy for the remainder of his presidency. The following chapters show that Sputnik had no impact on the policies already in place and highlight Eisenhower’s pragmatic activism in enabling the implementation of these policies by a carefully-chosen group of expert ‘helping hands’. This study delivers a new interpretation of Eisenhower’s actions. It argues that he was operating on a parallel track that started with the Castle H-bomb tests; developed through the CIA's reconnaissance efforts and was distilled in the Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958. This set a policy for US involvement in outer space that matched Eisenhower’s desire for a balanced budget and fundamental belief in maintaining peace. By challenging the orthodox view, this paper shows that President Eisenhower’s space policy actions were strategic steps that provided a logical next step for both civilian and military space programmes at the completion of the International Geophysical Year.

▼ This paper serves as a defense of the space policy of the Obama Administration. Contrary to what critics have claimed about the new policy, the space policy of the Obama Administration does not abandon exploration any more than it abandons commerce; in fact, it expands both, by removing the need for immediate material gains from NASA to the private sector, allowing NASA to expand its reach to encompass innovation and discovery. Basing this argument on the classic notions of what is political and public, and equating these with exploration, this paper analyzes the transition from the exploratory orientation of the space program in the 1960s to the purely commercial orientation of the decades after, and explains how the Obama policy returns NASA to its role as a successful public space agency.

▼ It is stated in the School Act that the Swedish school should work towards providing an education of equal quality. Teachers are confronted with ethical considerations when assessing and grading. The study aims to clarify the opinion of teachers in the later part of lower secondary school and teachers at upper secondary about the knowledge requirements and how their teaching works to achieving an equal assessment in the school. The survey material consists of qualitative semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with the help of an interview guide, which contained questions to the interviewees. The design of the questions allowed the interviewees to respond descriptively about their own experiences. In total, seven legitimate and active social science teachers were interviewed at various schools in southeastern Sweden. The teachers had to answer questions concerning their interpretative preference and their perception of the knowledge requirements in the subject of social science. The result of the survey shows that there is room for interpretation in the knowledge requirements, which has a negative impact on equal assessment. The result has also been related to a theoretical framework to identify which methods teachers can use to strengthen equality in their assessment. Furthermore, the results have been discussed based on of equality assessment and grading in coherent relevance with previous research

▼ Framed by insights from critical human geography,
political economy, and educational studies, this dissertation offers a critique of the contemporary education reform movement in the United States (hereafter U.S.). The overarching argument made here is that the powerfully positioned individuals and groups at the head of this movement have been less motivated by a desire to actually pursue social justice than by the
political expediency that comes with appearing to be doing so. The three papers that follow speak to the existing critical literature on public schooling in the U.S., which argues that the perpetual discussion about how to 'fix' the U.S.'s educational system should be seen as an attempt by its powerfully positioned interlocutors to collapse popular discontent with a variety of persistent social injustices into a focused dissatisfaction with the public schools. This literature has also argued that although the public education system in the U.S. is indeed quite inequitable as it presently exists, and thus an appropriate target for transformation, the education reform movement's efforts to that end have actually reproduced many of the social and pedagogical causes of educational inequity. This dissertation builds on the literature just summarized by demonstrating that the rhetoric of the individuals and groups associated with the education reform movement coalesces around a spatial discourse through which the causes of a variety of social ills are presented as endogenous to the spaces inhabited by the individuals and groups that suffer them with the greatest frequency and intensity. Further, the artificially discrete, enclosed spaces conjured in the name of education reform are enrolled as part of a broader project of legitimizing coercive, individualizing, and competitive-rather than supportive, dialogic, collaborative-forms of pedagogy, and governance more generally.

▼ Garbage disorders the city. Biosphere reserves reorder nature. This dissertation examines both of these concepts by focusing on the role of garbage in small cities enveloped by conservation
space on the northwestern coast of Yucatán, México. Drawing from over two years of ethnographic research in Yucatán, I examine the historical and
political relationships that produce garbage, conservation spaces, expectations of development, and gendered work. This project also points to the importance of mixed methodologies and multiple voices in
political ecological and feminist geographical research by using a combination of methods, including oral histories and interviews, surveys, and policy analysis. My findings elucidate: how urban garbage is conceptualized and managed in protected coastal wetlands, how women produce new socio-environmental subjectivities through garbage projects, and the degree to which informal garbage use redefines urban and conservation
space and creates alternative development possibilities.

▼ Cities are not merely inanimate objects. They are complex living
environments, built over time by cultures and civilisations. This thesis argues
that cities have a central place in human history and civilisation because they
are imbued with meaning and meaningful activity. Thus, cities are inherently
political spaces, and it may be reasonably expected that they will be important
sites of social transformation in the postmodern era. In order to understand
the relationship between urban space and political consciousness, this thesis
traces several different interpretive paths within the marxist tradition. First, we
examine the work of Henri Lefebvre, who argues for an understanding of
urban space as socially produced. Next, the thesis looks at the contributions
of Guy Debord, particularly at his understanding of the relation between time
and the city. Both writers struggle to understand the urban in the context of
the shift to what we now call postmodernity. Despite their many strengths,
Debord and Lefebvre ultimately fail to theorise a social subject capable of
resisting capitalist domination of the city. As a result, the thesis turns to a
consideration of the work of Antonio Negri. Negri’s analysis of the fate of
contemporary subjectivity has reinvigorated marxist critique with a return to
the question of political change. His figure of the multitude takes leave of
traditional marxism in challenging and productive ways, and helps us better
understand the nature of subjectivity and resistance in a world of immaterial
labour and virtuality. Nevertheless, this thesis argues that there is still work to
be done before Negri’s work can be mapped out onto the contemporary
metropolis.

▼ The aim of the research is to explore and understand the role of local councillors in local government. There are three dimensions that influence this role. The first is the tension between central and local government and the highly centralised party political system which constrains local autonomy. The second is the role of the political party in local government, and its dominance in policy making. The third is the evolving spatial planning system and the new emphasis on localism and collaborative planning. These themes are explored through an examination of the spatial planning system, and in particular a case study of plan making in the growth area of the Central Oxfordshire Sub- region. My reading and reflection have helped me formulate three research questions : a) Has the lack of local government autonomy inhibited the adoption of innovative forms of collaborative planning; b) Have councillors understood the central tenets of collaborative planning and acted upon them and c) Can local politicians who are not members of the council`s executive play a more effective community leadership role by becoming more involved in the scrutiny of policies for space and place - making. The study has contributed to knowledge in a number of ways. It provides confirmatory evidence for other research exploring the role of the councillor in local government. This study has shown how the politicisation that has affected local government has also had an influence on the role of spatial planning in local government and that the dominant role of the political party in local government also involves spatial planning. Finally it demonstrates the importance of effective scrutiny within local government so as to create political space for other stakeholders who otherwise are inhibited by this politicisation.

▼ The political and social activities of the Russian language minority (RLM) in Finland or in the Helsinki metropolitan area (HMA) until now, has not been the subject of any academic study. Moreover, my experiences from this study show them to be somewhat a taboo. Through a constructivist "self-other dichotomy" related theory of identity and interest formation, this thesis investigates the political and consequently social activities of the RLM in the HMA. This study treats the notion of "minority" through an idea and process of construction from the Anarchy level and a grass-roots level of existence within a resident state. Moreover, the Anarchy level is highlighted by challenging Alexander Wendt s theory on state identities along the Westphalia lines. Equally, at a grass-roots level using the "self-other dichotomy" the political and consequently social activities of the RLM are explored as well as its existing ideology.
The methodology used in preparing this thesis is a three-fold approach based on qualitative research. Firstly, using open-ended semi-structured questions on a one to one basis with three expert professionals involved in the daily affairs of the RLM. Secondly, twenty-eight web-based, open-ended semi-structured interviews with members of the RLM. Finally, using Ideological Discourse Analysis, it draws upon a combination of Cognitive, Social and Discourse dimensions of the self-other "ideological square" as well as textual analysis. All the above mentioned compose a comprehensive picture of the self-other dichotomy related to the RLM.
The main outcome, in the identification of the political motivation of the RLM is the scale of five different discourses: Glass Ceiling, I say ¡No Pasarán!, We are Sui Generis , Our Perception, to be continued and Isolation . Furthermore, as a product of construction process the RLM s delimitation lines appear as well as their downplay via the same process with a reversed vector. Finally, an anti-discriminatory or anti-xenophobic ideology resurfaces from the empirical data through the Ideological Discourse Analysis.

▼ The formation of national memory depends to a large extent on a nation’s success in constructing multiple commemorative forms: symbols, ceremonies and celebrations, museums and monuments, tradition, and cultural texts that provide symbolic arenas for narrating the nation. These forms assist the nation’s memory in tracing themes of continuity between the past and present; they establish shared history and cultural heritage. Significant changes in the nation’s life, whether social of
political, later the collective mind of its citizens. With
political landscapes changing, existing forms of remembrance may be transformed or reinterpreted or they may be altogether demolished and new commemorative symbols constructed in their place. Remembering, as well as forgetting, becomes a social and highly politicized process.A point of departure for this thesis is the city of Sofia, Bulgaria. It is studied as a palimpsest, uncovering layers of history from antiquity to the present. Studying the historical layers reveals not just the evolution of the city but also the
political views and ideas shaping Sofia’s morphology. The street becomes a locus of collective memory. A memory walk is developed, exposing the history of specific sites, rendering visible the specific memories and acknowledging the importance of the sites in the time period they existed. A narrative is constructed, travelling through
space and rebuilding memories. This thesis will look at issues of public commemoration, remembering and forgetting traumatic events. It will focus on
political transformations of
space and erasing, shaping and rebuilding a nation’s memory. Deliberate demotion of built fabric in an attempt to erase the collective memory of society will be examined.

▼ This thesis argues that the Thai-Burma borderlands becomes the setting for modes of social practice that critically inform the projection of a Karen identity. It uses the concept of ‘borderlands’ as a social construct to explore notions of space, activism and identity, particularly through an examination of the relationship between the nature of the borderlands space and the narratives of displaced Karen who reside within it. This thesis examines how a group of Karen, displaced from Burma and now residing on the Thai side of the national boundary, conceive of and relate to the space they occupy. It shows that at the centre of this relationship between space and people is an interchange that occurs across a broader space that is informed by the national border that separates Burma and Thailand, a space that this thesis has treated as a ‘borderlands’. This interchange is defined by the nature of sociality that occurs in conjunction with a territorial domain, and is broadly mapped through the operations of the nation-state and the practices of displaced Karen, two key agents of the borderlands space. Drawing ethnographic field work into conceptual considerations of place and space, this thesis found that in the borderlands, the practices of displaced Karen take on a fluid and contested form, framed by processes of constructing, adapting, rejecting and reifying elements of a Karen cultural and political identity in order to construct a Karen narrative of persecution, and ultimately establish a Karen political self. This often sits in tension with the operations of the Thai and Burmese nation-states, which attempt to create a space that is more homogenised; defined and treated as representing the nation-state’s political authority over a delineated territorial domain and its inhabitants. This thesis shows that this tension provides a space in which displaced Karen protest, construct and redefine the parameters of their political life. This is done through key modes of social practice – patterns of activism that establish a Karen political voice, networks of solidarity that enable, broaden and strengthen the reach of a Karen political voice, and processes of cultural recovery that consolidate the idea of a Karen nation and a Karen cultural identity. These practices ultimately inform the construction and projection of a Karen identity that is specific to the borderlands space. This research is important because it argues for a new way of looking at the borderlands as a political space, a spatial reimagining that moves beyond the specificity of the territorial domain to emphasise the social construction of space and the spatial aspects of identity. In doing so, this thesis offers a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the borderlands space, the actions of displaced Karen and the construction of identity.

▼ This thesis examines the redevelopment of the Don Valley Brickworks from a former brick-making facility to an urban park. Through an exploration of the social, political, and economic forces that contributed to the production of the site, this thesis demonstrates the relationship between the production of nature, processes of urbanization and urban political economy, and uneven spatial development in the city. Using three theoretical frameworks â the production of nature, production of space, and urban political ecology - this research examines the social and political origins and implications of environmental change, emphasizing the relationship between environmental transformation and social differentiation. The findings of this research demonstrate that the key actors involved in the redevelopment of the site were operating within the context of an urban sustainability agenda, and did not control their circumstances, but rather mobilized based on the resources that they were able to access within their particular context.

▼ In A Revolutionary Resolution of Time and
Space: The Challenge to Revive and Revise Black Power I use an interdisciplinary approach to consider the capitalist production of time and
space, and how this historical process, through colonization, slavery, and the globalization of capitalism, racializes our world in the service of profit. I argue that black power, as part of the long black liberation struggle, offers an alternative spatiotemporal paradigm that has the potential to create a future that prioritizes the people's needs over profit. Whereas the
political economic system of our contemporary historic bloc creates an inverse relationship between people and power, black power is based upon the assumption that people equal power. This project is necessarily broad in scope. To ground this work I use the production of Angola and Angola Louisiana State Penitentiary, from the Portuguese colonization of southern Africa, to Isaac Franklin's slave plantation, Angola, to Angola Louisiana State Penitentiary – as a historical example that creates a specific
space and accounting of time. While black power means many things to different people, I contend that the radical politics and praxis of the Black Panther Party, in the tradition of the long black liberation movement, is especially significant to contemporary community organizing as we respond to a seemingly ever expanding private sphere that effaces public
space and the people's time. This is especially true concerning the Panther's survival programs, anti-capitalist and anti-U.S. imperialist politics, and the Party's ability to forge revolutionary alliances among communities of color in the United States, and throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. In our time, we face new, or historically specific, challenges including man-made environmental catastrophe, and the exponential monopolization of the world's resources; our capacity to revive and revise black power in this context, holds our potential to meet and overcome these obstacles.
