▼ The term American Exceptionalism is used to designate
political myths purporting the qualitative distinction of the United States to other nations. I argue that American Exceptionalism should not be viewed as a single
political myth but as a metamyth constituted by four logically independent myths of American Exceptionalism. These myths center around the notion that America has a unique spiritual condition; that America is uniquely developed, structured and/or capable; that America has a unique or superior moral quality; and that America ought to behave as a moral example to other nations. I refer to these as American Spiritual Exceptionalism, American Performative Exceptionalism, American Moral Exceptionalism, and American Moral Exemplarism respectively. I also posit that there is a non-mythical belief in the uniqueness or superiority in America’s performance or moral quality. I call this view American Existential Exceptionalism. To determine if there is evidence that these notions of American Exceptionalism are believed in isolation to each other I conducted a correlation test based on a 29-item survey questionnaire meant to gauge belief in these five notions. Further, I hypothesized that a four-factor model is a better fit for the notion of American Exceptionalism than a single-factor model. To test this, I conducted two Confirmatory Factor Analyses and compared their results. The results suggested that the four-factor model is a better fit than the one-factor model. However, the results also suggested that there is a better model than the four-factor model suggested by this paper.

▼ This dissertation addresses the formative
power of
myth from the standpoint of
political philosophy. Although
a work in
political theory, its approach is empirically oriented.
Taking up three distinct kinds of
myth arising in three different
socio-historical contexts, the dissertation examines the role
played by each in shaping both speculative thought and practical
and ritual activities in its corresponding context. The myths and
societies examined are Enuma Elish in the context of ancient
Mesopotamia, Genesis 1 – 2:4a in that of ancient Israel, and two
modern myths – Thomas Mann’s Roman der Seele and the National
Socialist
myth of Volk, Reich, and FÌ_hrer – in the context of
modern Germany. Such examination yields a comparative basis upon
which to explore critical questions surrounding the relationship of
myth to human thought and life.

▼ This Thesis develops and applies a theoretical framework to understand Al Qaeda’s ideology. A concept of ideology comprising a number of
political myths, shaped through rhetoric is the central feature of this research. The Thesis tests the theory that extremist ideologies emerge out of social and
political crises and postulates that the primary components of ideology are a number of
political myths created in the context of historical, theological and
political factors. These myths and other components of ideology are given form through rhetoric and the rhetorical styles and techniques employed, in turn, shape ideology. Rhetorical analysis is carried out to identify aspects of Al Qaeda’s ideology, particularly in the construction of
political myth. Analysis of the relationship between textuality and
political style reveals that while Al Qaeda adopts republican attitudes to
political debate, its textual style most closely matches the texts of modern revolutionary terrorists and reveals a great deal about its dual reliance on horrific violence and reasoned discourse. The rhetorical influences on Al Qaeda’s main ideologue are examined to reveal how they shape its ideology. The research fills a gap in academic analysis of terrorism in general and ideology in particular by providing a novel framework to identify the roots, causes, beliefs and trajectories of a particular seam of
political thought. Specifically, it identifies Al Qaeda as an extreme and inevitable manifestation of Islamist
political ideology, which in turn was a reaction to a number of modern
political and social crises and ideas. The
political myths that comprise Al Qaeda’s ideology are inherited from mainstream Islamism and are open to critical challenge. However, its motivations and strategies are driven by its primary ideologues’ perception of their
political and conflict experiences. The belief that Muslim countries are ruled by unrepresentative and ineffective regimes subservient to the West and the belief that through asymmetric tactics such as terrorism it is possible to destroy a superpower are the two driving forces that sustain Al Qaeda’s ideology. These perceptions are less susceptible to critical debate and may only change after a transformation of
political reality; when convincing changes have occurred in the nature of regimes in the Muslim world and when Al Qaeda’s
political aims of defeating the West are demonstrably unachievable.

▼ In this study I examine the use of music by and in relation to politically-motivated prisoners in Northern Ireland, from the mid-1960s until 2000. For both republican and loyalist prisoners music was a key component in identity-construction, bonding and coping with the pains of imprisonment and demands of paramilitary life. The prison reflected the wider conflict, and the cultural struggle outside was affected by the prison context. Music boosted morale and facilitated emotional release. It provided an ideological connection between prisoners and the outside world, and had a practical function through fundraising and the gathering of other resources. Music was a means of contesting the authority of prison staff and rejecting the claims of the wider state. It played symbolic and functional roles in prisoners' campaigns for legitimacy, power and control within the prison. Music also projected a carefully constructed image of the prisoners beyond the prison, seeking to generate communal support, which reinforced prisoners' own self-image and narrative. Fundamental themes such as bonding, defiance, self-expression and passing the time are traced and examined throughout three decades of paramilitary imprisonment. However, prisoners' musical production was not static. Shaped by paramilitary affiliation, it also responded to the different penal phases of the conflict. These included internment, Special Category Status, prison protests and their aftermath, which affected the form and content of prisoners' musical production. Prisoner-related groups on the outside were similarly affected in their use of music. The genres used by prisoners were dynamic and evolving, fusing the mainstream and the political to create a fluid, hybrid musical context which intertwined paramilitary culture with entertainment and social life. Music linked, maintained and bolstered varied and overlapping communities and identities: within the prison-based paramilitary world and in the communities outside, which the prisoners claimed to represent and upon whose support they depended.

▼ The aim of this thesis is to problematize Amitav Acharya’s Global International Relations framework, demonstrate problems with IR’s reliance on the English language, as well as IR’s
political economy, and show how these three factors may impede the development and incorporation of Global IR in modern IR overall.
The first argument that this thesis presents is a problematization of the emphasis on English within IR, and it will do so over the first two chapters. The first chapter of the thesis tackles with the use of English in the contemporary international climate, where, as Bunce et al. and Kubota & Okuda demonstrate how English shapes and intervenes in international politics and developments. The second chapter, which will look at the state of the English language in IR theory, demonstrates that English is tied closely together with the legitimacy of IR as an academic discipline as well as in the imagining of globalisation, and how it has shaped the creation of the Us vs. Them dichotomy that encounters so much criticism within IR.
The second argument, which will be approached in Chapter 3, will turn to the
political economy of IR, and how this has helped in the creation of the homogenous academic field we work in today. By looking at the development of the university as an institution for research through Kamola’s argument, the presence of the publish or perish culture, and the problems that this, combined with the English-dominated Western IR, present for the globalising of IR - one of the mission statements of Global IR.
This thesis will conclude by suggesting a potential alternative approach that Global IR can look into to tackle the issues that are presented throughout the thesis.

▼ There is a widespread conception that myths are false and manipulative which is why man must strive to move away from them. Simultaneously they affect our social lives to a high degree, especially political myths. With a starting point of the science of rhetoric needing to complement its understanding of how social meaning is produced, this essay will attempt to develop a theoretical understanding of how political myths functions and produce social meaning. The questions that guide the investigation are how the concept of myth is understood in other scientific contexts, which functions myth fulfills and in which way the concept of myth can supplement the science of rhetoric. The investigation is based on Roland Barthes’, Kenneth Burke’s and Ernst Cassirer’s perspective on political myth. The study concludes that myth often functions to oversimplify diversity to sustain the prevailing political order or to overthrow it. Furthermore, it shows that myth can be understood as a way for man to express emotion and that these myths can be activated by the utterance of a word or sentence. Based on this notion, I argue that one should view myth as a function rather than a definition. I further claim the importance of understanding that mythical expression cannot be met by ‘rational’ or ‘logical’ arguments. I rather propose that rhetorical myth analysis ought to be combined with theories of language’s ethical dimension to be interpreted in an accurate manner.

This dissertation has as the ultimate purposepave the way for a fruitful debate between Marxism and Political Science. Thereunto seeks to reply the questions posed by the mainstream of the field against marxism as an alleged economism.
The dissertation begins relocating, from the works of the founders of Marxism, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and its most prominent followers, Vladimir Lenin, Antonio Gramsci and Louis Althusser, the true relationship between the ideal and material spheres, and thus between economics and politics.
As an element exemplifying the importance of the political and ideal sphere for Marxism will deal with that element that provides social action on itself and its material base, the consciousness. It will then be the object of this dissertation the study of a form of
consciousness criticized by Marxism under the name of ideology: mystified consciousness.
This will be expressed in two ways: the ideology and myth. Defines then the two concepts in
an innovative way then ends with the study of a specific case of ideology, the sebastianism, in
its distinct expression in the Brazilian backlands. We will focus on one of the lesser-known
movements, the Kingdom's Enchanted Stone of Rodeador.

The present research investigates the process of (de)constructing of the public image of Lula during the Brazilian political crisis of 2016 and how the narratives of the political myth were triggered in this process. In order to reach these objectives, we analyzed the circulation of narratives on Twitter that mentioned the keyword \"Lulaänd that were published during four contexts that occurred in that year, namely: the social demonstrations in favor of Dilma Rousseff\'s impeachment that occurred on 13 March; the social protests against the coup on March 18, the impeachment vote in the Chamber of Deputies on April 17 and in the Federal Senate on May 12. The procedures adopted to carry out the research were based on theoretical research on the concepts of myth, narrative and public political image, as well as on the circulation of these concepts in mediatized societies.
In addition, we carried out a bibliographical research on Lula\'s political trajectory, as well as on the political…

Pablo Nerudas Canto General is one of the most important poetic works of the twentieth century. Written during the Cold War, aims to cover the entirety of the American Continent under the influence of the political engagement of its author, who was an important member of the Communist Party at the time of the works composition. This dissertation discusses the choices made by the author regarding the politicization of his poetry and its aesthetic and political consequences, with particular interest in the mythologizing of history and of social struggles operated by Neruda in his book. For this purpose, the analysis of poems seeks to integrate into the reading the reflection about mythical elements mobilized by the author and his interaction with the ideological and political message explicit in the work, characterizing Canto General as an example of interventionist art. The analysis is
completed with the reading of The Heights of Macchu Picchu, the main section of poems in the book, considered by many the best key to understand the particular conjunction between myth and politics in the work of the Chilean poet.

In Romania, the rise of democracy has contributed to modifying political leaders’ myths and images. The 1989 events have led to the vital necessity of creating both a new political landscape and a new set of images attached to political leaders. However, political communication has been influenced and shaped by the Communist past of the current political leaders as well as by the image of Nicolae Ceausescu in collective memory. At first sight, such a heavy legacy seems to have had a contradictory influence on political leaders who have been constructing themselves while building Romania’s contemporary political area. They are both the products and architects of Romanian society. This dual involvement in the country’s life has placed them in a very complex situation. However, the instrumentation of myths and images has given them the possibility not only of building the archetype of Romania’s democratic leaders but also of creating a steady political environment in Central and Oriental Europe.

▼ This dissertation proposes an original reading of two
important texts in early modern social contract theory: Hobbes’
Leviathan and Locke’s Treatises of Government. It analyzes the
references to the Americas made in these texts to show how their
illustrative use in depictions of the state of nature is
articulating a particular, long-lasting, and highly consequential
conception of otherness, one coined “Aboriginality.” Two goals are
pursued through this investigation of the role of the Americas in
social contract theory. First, it is shown that by applying Michel
Foucault’s critical methods to canonical texts, we can uncover new
paradoxes and propose new interpretations of “old” texts. Through
the analytical lens of “Aboriginality,” social contract theory is
not as much the modern affirmation of natural rights as a
theoretical funnel, channelling “American imaginaries” into a
rigidified conception of the state of nature, initiating what would
become our modern understanding of civilization, subjectivity, and
citizenship. The historical context, the post-1492 apparition of
the “Americas,” literally as a New Continent and figuratively as a
new trope in literature and in the European mind, is analyzed as a
“social imaginary,” and the impact of the travel literature on
philosophical and legal discourse assessed. Particular attention is
devoted to the Spanish Scholastics’ view on the “nature of the
Indians”—showing how the Americas and its Indigenous inhabitants
posed a theoretical and anthropological challenge for Western legal
and political theorists of the time. The Scholastic approach can
then be contrasted to that of Hobbes and Locke, whose association
between state of nature and Indigenous America contributes to the
development of modern “civilizational thinking”—this theoretical
shift would be fairly harmless if it were not necessarily
associated with the exclusion of “Aboriginality,” and with it, of
those deemed natural and uncivilized. This interpretation sheds new
light on the distinction biopower/sovereign power established by
Foucault, stressing the importance of contract theory and of the
“juridico-political” discourse in genealogies of the modern
subject.

▼ In this dissertation, I trace the use of the mythic Irish hero Cuchulain by early Irish nationalists. From 1878 to 1939, Standish James O’Grady, Lady Augusta Gregory, and William Butler Yeats employed this figure for specific
political and cultural agendas. Cuchulain makes a fitting symbol for the “poet warrior” stereotype that was purposely and incidentally cultivated during the cultural nationalist phase of the Irish Literary Revival, when writers were beginning to explore the Cuchulain
myth to demonstrate cultural and linguistic ideals. Nationalists found in Cuchulain a symbol that could tie the cultural to the
political and the
political to the martial. O’Grady’s motive for writing about the hero was to demonstrate cultural appreciation, but Gregory saw
political possibilities as she tactically employed Cuchulain as a challenge to British scholars who were dismissive of Irish cultural heritage. Yeats’s Cuchulain poems and plays span his entire career and mirror his own fluctuating feelings about the Irish Nationalist discourse.
This study will add to our understanding of the mythological images in Irish literature, culture, and politics, particularly that of Cuchulain. I examine the texts primarily through postcolonial and nationalist lenses to address the
political and social agendas of the authors. As members of the Anglo-Irish class, my three primary authors had different and complicated ideas about Irish identity, which I connect to the postcolonial theory of Declan Kiberd, Gregory Castle, and David Lloyd, who explore the hybrid and complicated forms of Irish and Anglo-Irish identity. I also apply Joep Leerssen’s concepts in imagology, the study of national stereotypes and how they emerge in order to demonstrate the relation of nationalist agendas to the use of cultural figures. While not a definitive study of all accounts of the Cuchulain
myth, this dissertation adds to a growing body of research. Concentrating solely on the use of mythic characters as cultural and
political symbols, this study builds on the scholarship of Maria Tymoczko and Ann Dooley and others who examine the cultural and
political motives inherent in translation.

▼ Since their inception, the actual use of nuclear weapons in conflict is extremely limited. There have been only two documented occurrences which were committed exclusively by the United States. By contrast, however, state posturing with nuclear weapons occurs with regularity transcending historical situations, national wealth, military power, or even the actual possession of nuclear weapons. Rationalist arguments that depict nuclear posturing as a means of deterrence appear insufficient given its tendency to unbalance perceptions of equilibrium, and the public nature in which it occurs. Instead, I examine nuclear posturing by the United States during the Cold War as a form of
political ritual providing for three distinctive, but complementary functions. First, posturing was a means to create coherence between foreign nuclear policy and domestic civil defense by manipulating symbols of fear. Second, posturing allowed the state to present itself in its new role as a shamanic authority over a new and powerful realm. Finally, posturing allowed for a normalization of the contradictory roles assumed by the state as it upheld its commission to defend the citizenry by means that would most probably destroy them all.

▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of Utah residents concerning what role, if any, the L.D.S. Church should play in Utah politics; if they believe in the concept of a separation of church and state; whether they feel a separation of church and state exists in Utah; and how much influence they perceive the predominant faith of the state has on its politics.
Thus, the four following hypotheses were designed:
1. Utah residents will perceive that churches should be involved in moral, but not
political issues.
2. Utah residents will perceive that there should be a separation of church and state.
3. Utahns will perceive that a separation of church and state does not exist in Utah.
4. Utah residents will perceive that the predominant faith of this state has considerable influence on Utah politics.
In order that these hypotheses could be tested, an instrument was designed and pre-tested; a random-systematic sample was drawn from all Utah telephone directories; interviews were conducted; responses were recorded and computerized and reported in this study.

▼ The current research assessed whether a statement by a deviant
political ingroup (versus outgroup) member elicited measureable differences on trivialization, cognitive dissonance, rape
myth acceptance, or decision to vote for that candidate, and if explicitly “debunking” the statement made by this politician further impacted these variables. Participants were randomly assigned to read a statement made by a Republican or Democratic politician, who would either be an ingroup or outgroup member based on the party affiliation of each participant. Results indicate that while there were no significant differences between Republican or Democratic participants overall, Republicans tended to trivialize the statements made by their ingroup politician more than Democrats. Contrary to the hypotheses, participants experienced similar levels of dissonance across voting decision after reading about a deviant ingroup member. However, consistent with theory, there was significantly lower dissonance among those who read about an outgroup politician and voted for an ingroup politician. While failing to reach statistical significance, a trend towards increased rape
myth acceptance among participants who read about a deviant ingroup politician and then voted for them was revealed, and this was fully mediated by level of trivialization.Implications for social identity and cognitive dissonance theories are discussed.

▼ The reading of four contemporary novels, namely: Credo by Melvyn Bragg, The Catastrophist by Ronan Bennett, Everything You Need by A.L. Kennedy and American Gods by Neil Gaiman explores the prominent position of mythification and remythification in contemporary literature. The discussion of Bragg's novel examines the significance of Celtic mythology and folklore and to what extent it influenced Christian mythology on the British Isles and vice versa. The presentation of the transition from a cyclical, pagan to a linear, Christian belief system is analysed. My analysis of Bennett's novel supports the observation that
political myth as
myth transformed contains elements and qualities embodied by sacred myths and investigates the relevance of Johan Degenaar's observation that "[p]ostmodernism emphasises the fact that
myth is an ambiguous phenomenon" and practices an attitude of "eternal vigilance" (1995: 47), as is evident in the main protagonist's dispassionate stance. My reading of Kennedy's novel explores the bond that
myth creates between the artist and the audience and argues that the writer as
myth creator fulfils a restorative function through the mythical and symbolic qualities embedded in literature. Gaiman's novel American Gods focuses on the function of meta/multi-mythology in contemporary literature (especially the fantasy genre) and on what these qualities reveal about a society and its concerns and values. The thesis contemplates how in each case the original myths were substituted, modulated or transfigured to be presented as metamyth or
myth transformed.
The analysis shows that
myth can be used in various ways in literature: as the data or information that is recreated and transformed in the creative process to establish a common matrix of stories, symbols, images and motifs which represents a bond between the author and the reader in terms of the meaning-making process; to facilitate a spiritual enrichment in a demythologized world and for its restorative abilities. The study is confirmed by detailed mythical reference.

This paper analyzes the construction of political discourse related to the gaúcho (typical cowboy who lives in the southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul) and the colono (settler) in the 1996 and 2000 municipal elections, in Caxias do Sul. The research was delimited by the electoral programs of the Popular Front and it seeks to demonstrate how the myths of these two social groups are present in the social imaginary and end up being used in partisan communication with the purpose of winning voters. Twenty Popular Front campaign programs were analysed. These referred to the 1996 elections for the City Hall of Caxias do Sul between the State Deputy, Pepe Vargas, from PT, and the Federal deputy, Germano Rigoto, from PMDB. In the year of 2000, José ivo Sartori was the one running against Pepe Vargas. In order to move forward in this direction, we have identified the gaúcho and Italian immigrant process of identity formation and subsequently the way this identity will become the collective imagination in a persuasive process of historical, literary and media discourse. Through anthropological and semiotic analysis, whose theoretical framework is based on Mircea Eliade and Roland Barthes, we found the meanings produced by these messages to interpret the variations of a mythologized election discourse, which seeks a rapprochement with the voter based on his/her identification with the myth.

▼ The dissertation examines the puzzle of the divergent post-communist discourses and rituals of collective memory in the Czech republic and Slovakia - in particular, the difference in (1) the two countries' attitudes toward de-communization, (2) their interpretations of their common Czechoslovak past, and (3) the overall content and style of official memory discourses employed in the two countries after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993. Taking a comparative historical perspective, the dissertation traces the transformation of the Czech and Slovak historical narratives over time and finds the roots of the divergent Czech and Slovak post-communist paths in the legacies of the Czechoslovak communist and interwar regimes. On a conceptual level, the dissertation presents a culturalist critique of the dominant institutionalist literature on democratization and an argument on how we might think of post-communist transitions outside of the strictly institutional framework. It conceptualizes democratization as a dynamic and a highly contentious process of meaning creation in which various actors struggle to legitimize themselves and their visions of the present and the future by making references to the past and highlights the special role of
political myths in this process. Rather than a straightforward adoption of some ready-made institutions and processes, in other words, democratization is presented as an activity of sensemaking - of searching for useable pasts and new legitimizing mythologies. The Czech and Slovak post-communist search for useable pasts represents neither an unprecedented "return of history" nor some cynical sinister power play of elites acting on some well-constituted interests but rather a new phase of an ongoing, dynamic project of identity and meaning-creation - of sense-making through time.

▼ The study compares two cases of ethnically diverse societies sharing a substantial set of characteristics but where inter-group relations developed in two opposite directions. In Serbia the entire decade of the 1990s was witness to widespread violence, first in the wars of Yugoslav secession (1991-1996) and later in the conflict over the status of the Kosovo region (1998-1999). In Romania, despite one eruption of interethnic violence in March 1990, there have been no further clashes between Romanians and Hungarians, even if a latent suspicion continued to be verbally manifested between these two communities. By comparing these cases, the possibility opens to verify the impact of taught history on the representations of self and others and, from this premise, to examine its influence on the potential for peaceful or conflictual ethnic relations.
The questions asked are: Is
myth, as identified in secondary literature in other areas (literature, media, and
political discourse) present in the history textbooks of Romania and Serbia? If myths are to be found in history schoolbooks, are there differences in the ways these myths define the in-group and the relationship with the Other between a country that experienced interethnic conflict and a country that did not?
The working hypothesis based upon the existing literature is simple: in multiethnic societies, history textbooks reflect the elite's, especially state elite's, interpretation of the past and outline the acceptable/ desirable representations of the dominant ethnic group and of the diverse Others with whom this group interacts. If the history and the self image of the dominant group are presented in a manner that highlights the differences and the uneven distribution of power between the dominant and the minority ethnic group(s), the possibility of domestic tensions increases and, if other conditions are present, there is even a rise in violent civil war along ethnic lines.
The study finds that myths are present in the post-communist history textbooks of Romania and Serbia, both in their visual content and in their text. Despite expectations to the contrary, however, the differences in the types of
myth used in a conflict case (Serbia) and in a non-conflict case (Romania) are small, thus disputing the importance awarded to history education in preventing or alleviating conflicts.

This dissertation aims to study how, in a context of economic and social crises, the breach of consensus on the national project expressed by the American dream has triggered some changes regarding the way national values have been expressed in institutional political discourse since the 1960s. The American dream can be defined as a national myth and a national ideology ; it offers a variety of meanings among which are the dream of upward mobility with its relation to the Protestant work ethic, and the dream of freedom and equal opportunities for a chosen people entrusted with a sacred mission to reform the world. Using as a body of research the Democratic and Republican nomination acceptance speeches since 1960, this study applies the methodology of discourse analysis, and especially Antonio Gramsci’s hegemony theory, to the analysis of the expression of the American dream. Indeed, according to Gramsci’s theory, the changes in the way the dream has been expressed may be deemed necessary to the survival of a dominant ideology : faced with a context of crisis, the American dream has thereby been able to maintain its hegemonic position and its role as a tool for legitimizing social order.

This dissertation is dedicated to the study of Peruvian Marxist José Carlos Mariátegui (1894-1930) works and especially to the analysis of the

The chapters refer to the three phases of Mariátegui's life ¿ his youth (1914-1919); exile (1919-1923); return and posterior socialist activism in Peru (1923-1930) ¿ we aim at a better understanding of Amauta¿s concerns regarding the aforementioned concepts by evaluating his intellectual and political formation. The research shows that, in contrast with others classical Marxist authors, Mariátegui assumes a more sensitive vision of the social and historical roles performed by different religious expressions ¿ for which his personal and family education, marked by religiosity and mystique, are a great contribution. In his socialist development, Amauta incorporates to his speech expressions such as myth, faith and religiosity, which constitute the horizon of his revolutionary thought. On the other hand, by demonstrating a careful concern in his analysis about political and historical manifestations of religious
actors and institutions ¿ in Italy as well as in Peru and Latin America ¿ Mariátegui distances himself from…

These referred to the 1996 elections for the City Hall of Caxias do Sul
between the State Deputy, Pepe Vargas, from PT, and the Federal deputy, Germano Rigoto, from PMDB.

▼ Even though signs of one of the worst American financial crises were already apparent by the end of the first presidential term of the Republican candidate George W. Bush, he managed to be reelected for a second term, and it can be argued that Bush’s rhetoric, which relied heavily on his famous ‘war on terror’, has contributed to his reelection. When the Democratic candidate Barack Obama was elected in 2008, his rhetoric was different from that of his predecessor, and although Obama agreed that there were threats to be faced, he focused rather on the possibility of overcoming these challenges and managed to convince the voters that they could retake the path to prosperity and restore America’s place as a superpower. In the present thesis, I propose that specific linguistic features employed by Bush and Obama in speeches from their election periods have contributed to the candidates’ persuasiveness as the right candidates for the presidency of the United States. In particular, I argue that Bush’s and Obama’s choices of metaphors have contributed to the creation of
political myths that, for instance, portray them as heroic figures and their opponents as incompetent candidates. Following Cognitive Metaphor Theory and Charteris-Black’s framework for metaphor analysis in
political discourses, I have used the NVivo software to code twelve of Bush’s and Obama’s speeches (six each), where I have identified different metaphors and grouped them with respect to their source domains. Thereafter, when a group of sentences shared the same source and target domains, conceptual metaphors have been inferred, and I present arguments as to which images Bush and Obama may have tried to evoke in the audience’s minds by employing such metaphors and what the probable intention behind these choices may be. Furthermore, I argue that the linguistic environment in which metaphors are found also play a role in the act of persuasion and propose that distinctive linguistic features, such as antitheses, isocolons and repetition, have been employed by both politicians to heighten the rhetorical effect of their metaphor choices.

▼ Using post-structuralist psychonanalytic theory and
ludology theory, this analysis looks at the game World of Warcraft
(Warcraft). It asserts that Warcrafts relationship to its players
resembles society's connection to the individual: they both give a
framework of myths, of unreality, from which the individual defines
him/herself. Defining oneself from a constructed reality results
understanding of self and others in terms of a constructed
identity. This arouses a desire for a unified sense of self, a way
to connect back to the real. However, this desire can turn into
pathology, where players try to ascribe meaning onto others in a
possessive and degrading manner. In their attempts to reconcile
their disconnectedness, anxiety and melancholy, they can choose to
avoid this pathology. Games can inscribe myths on players, but
players can resist this through creative use of meaning, creating
identity from the self rather than as myths dictate, and avoiding
power relationships created from constructed
identity.

▼ This dissertation investigates the brand identities
of the South African Broadcasting Corporation television channels
SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 during the first decade of the 2000s (from
2000 to 2009). The study explores the manifestation and
dissemination of dominant
political ideologies and myths by the
SABC television channels and their respective brand identities. It
is argued that SABC television channels are structured and
organised according to specific brand ideologies that match
dominant
political ideologies prevalent in South Africa. This is
evident from the manner in which these channels have been
organised, defined and redefined over the past years, and also from
the self-promotional visual imagery shown by the television
channels. The visual brand identities of each channel create the
elements that make up each channel’s visual vocabulary, and each
visual vocabulary in turn contributes to notions of “South
Africanness” and definitions of South African identity. The study
also explores the main concepts of ideology theory as a critical
discursive practice to assist in a better understanding of the
power relations in the SABC and its channel brands in particular.
Some developments and changes in the SABC brand identities and the
organisation of its television channels are studied from a
historical perspective and correlated with ideology theory. In
order to do this, the study also draws from semiotic theory. The
author notes the semiotic quality of a brand and argues that the
process of branding, the process of semiosis and the process of the
dissemination of
political ideologies bear structural resemblance.
Basic definitions and key concepts of branding and corporate
identity contribute to an enhanced understanding of the visual
brand identities of the SABC television channels. An exploration of
the elements specific to television channel branding helps to
determine the signs, codes and meanings in SABC television channel
branding.

▼ This dissertation analyses the extent to which
dominant
political ideologies generate meanings in television news
texts. The working process of the television news system and the
manner in which television news constructs news programmes are
discussed. In light of the televisual mode of news production, the
author demonstrates how ideologically inspired meanings can
systematically enter the television news system and thus
potentially manipulate the production of television news
broadcasts, though making a semiotic analysis of the CNN
representations of September 11. This study is situated within the
field of visual culture studies, and semiotic theory is employed to
a great extent throughout. The author discusses the influence of
dominant
political ideologies on the television news production
process, and how this contributes to the restriction of the
polysemy of the television news sign. Television news
representations may be mediated and manipulated in such a way to
encourage viewers to produce readings that are favourable towards a
certain dominant
political ideology. The many mechanisms that
television news utilises to create meaning are discussed. The
mechanisms that are identified by the author as being the most
effective in the production of ideologically inspired meanings are
paid particular attention. These semiotic mechanisms include the
manipulation of iconic signs, the construction of arbitrary signs
and the representation of myths. The CNN representations of the
September 11 events are analysed for their ideological content, and
the author contends that these televisual representations were
deliberately constructed to inspire readings that would be
favourable to the ideology of Americanism. Therefore, Americanism,
as an example of a dominant
political ideology, is discussed. The
visual mechanisms employed by CNN after September 11 are analysed.
These include the editing of visually recorded footage, the
treatment of the newsreader and the incorporation of the image of
the American flag. The author offers a reading of the ideological
motivation of these texts. The media myths that are constructed to
naturalise Americanism, such as the
myth of the hero and the
myth
of the tower, are discussed with regard to the manner in which they
were represented by CNN after September 11. The iconic
representations of key
political figures involved with the
September 11 events are also discussed and their ideological
meanings uncovered. The CNN television news broadcasts functioned
both to inform an international audience of the terrorist attacks
and reinforce an ideology in crisis: namely, Americanism. CNN
repeatedly employed many visual mechanisms to encourage viewers to
produce readings that were favourable to Americanism. While
Americanism entered a period of crisis, it mobilised its
Ideological State Apparatuses, including television news, to
reinforce and justify its position of power in order to maintain
its own dominance after a deliberate blow. This study suggests that
the CNN representations of September 11…

light of the televisual mode of news production, the author
demonstrates how ideologically inspired meanings can systematically
enter the television news system and thus potentially manipulate
the production of television news broadcasts, though making a
semiotic analysis of the CNN representations of September 11. This
study is situated within the field of visual culture studies, and
semiotic theory is employed to a great extent throughout. The
author discusses the influence of dominant
political ideologies on
the television news production process, and how this contributes to
the restriction of the polysemy of the television news sign.
Television news representations may be mediated and manipulated in
such a way to encourage viewers to produce readings that are
favourable towards a certain dominant
political ideology. The many
mechanisms that television news utilises to create meaning are
discussed. The mechanisms that are identified by the author as
being the most effective in the production of ideologically
inspired meanings are paid particular attention. These semiotic
mechanisms include the manipulation of iconic signs, the
construction of arbitrary signs and the representation of myths.
The CNN representations of the September 11 events are analysed for
their ideological content, and the author contends that these
televisual representations were deliberately constructed to inspire
readings that would be favourable to the ideology of Americanism.
Therefore, Americanism, as an example of a dominant
political
ideology, is discussed. The visual mechanisms employed by CNN after
September 11 are analysed. These include the editing of visually
recorded footage, the treatment of the newsreader and the
incorporation of the image of the American flag. The author offers
a reading of the ideological motivation of these texts. The media
myths that are constructed to naturalise Americanism, such as the
myth of the hero and the
myth of the tower, are discussed with
regard to the manner in which they were represented by CNN after
September 11. The iconic representations of key
political figures
involved with the September 11 events are also discussed and their
ideological meanings uncovered. The CNN television news broadcasts
functioned both to inform an international audience of the
terrorist attacks and reinforce an ideology in crisis: namely,
Americanism. CNN repeatedly employed many visual mechanisms to
encourage viewers to produce readings that were favourable to
Americanism. While Americanism entered a period of crisis, it
mobilised its Ideological State Apparatuses, including television
news, to reinforce and justify its position of power in order to
maintain its own dominance after a deliberate blow. This study
suggests that the CNN representations of September 11…

▼ Plato's Statesman comprises three parts: method, myth, and politics. Scholars tend to pivot around any one of these, but seldom address how they fit together. My thesis argues for unity to the dialogue. The method, myth, and politics of the Statesman are connected by a common theme: the correct management of the parts of a whole. Each section in the dialogue concerns the appropriate management of the parts of something. The myth describes a time during which the cosmos was steered by a divine helmsman. By superintending the whole, the helmsman ensured that the parts were correctly organized. The method in the Statesman divides general kinds into their parts. The interlocutors discuss rules for ensuring that the divisions are made correctly, and in this way, the method of division concerns the ability to accurately arrange the parts of a whole. In breaking an important rule concerning the method of division, however, the interlocutors are alluding to the political theory discussed at the end of the dialogue where an argument is made that a true statesman is not bound by the law. Furthermore, genuine statesmanship involves the ability to correct weave together the disparate elements of a city. In the absence of statesmen, cities can only imitate the rule of statesmanship, much as the cosmos imitates the motion of the divine helmsman in the myth when it is left to its own devices. Thus, each part of the dialogue intersects with the others. And what unifies each of these parts is just that each them concerns the ability to unify disparate parts.
