▼ Manpower policy decisions are an extension of traditional operations management problems. Manpower policies strive to place the appropriate and accurate numbers of the correct types of people in the right jobs at the necessary time. Managers create inventory by hiring new workers, either in entry level or more senior positions. Over time, managers promote workers to satisfy demand for more advanced positions. Managers face the challenge of determining the number of people to hire into entry level positions, the number of people already in the work force to promote to more senior level positions, and in some open systems when and how many experienced employees to hire into these senior positions. This dissertation studies and develops three different methods and approaches to provide improved decision support to a healthcare organization’s manpower system. Our research goal is to design models of the organization’s manpower system to improve human resource operations. The healthcare system of interest is the United States Army’s Medical Department (AMEDD). The research will be arranged in three sections. We explore current practices and build improved optimization manpower system models. We use multi objective decision analysis techniques to enhance the optimization models. Lastly, we construct a system dynamics simulation model of the manpower system to address the limitations in the optimization models. There are three main contributions of this dissertation to the operations management literature. First, the development of improved manpower optimization models can be extended to other manpower systems. Second, we develop a technique to assess the manpower system value based on a series of value scoring transformation functions and weighting the over two hundred sub objectives in the optimization manpower system’s objective function. This application of multiple objective decision analysis makes it possible to compare different manpower systems. The system dynamics simulation of a military manpower system is new to the operations management literature as is how we use the system dynamics simulation to update optimization model parameters to construct a more realistic manpower system model.

▼ The paper presents the first series of results obtained in an ongoing validation and verification study of inter-dynamic OpenFOAM solver framework on a new set of high quality experimental tests performed on a large (2.4m long) generic
planing hull model (GPPH) with high deadrise (18deg), from the pre-planning (Fn∇=2.6) to fully
planing (Fn∇=5.7) regimes. This test case is a good benchmark for the free surface capturing model implemented in OpenFOAM which is based on a rather simple transport equation for an additional scalar field that defines the fraction of water in each cell of the computational mesh. This model, in spite of its simplicity, seems capable of reproducing complex violent free surface flows such as that observed in
planing hulls, that includes jet spray forming on the bottom and detaching from the chine of the
planing hull and overturning waves off the wet chine region, with some nuances. The dependence of the flow solution on the mesh quality is presented and discussed. Practical indication of the level of uncertainty of CFD models for the prediction of the calm water hydrodynamics of the GPPH is given at the highest simulated speed using both fixed and free attitude simulation solutions. Predictions are then extended to the whole speed range, including resistance components, dynamic trim, heave, wetted chine length, and wetted keel length. The effect due to algorithms is also discussed by modifying the settings in wall functions and solvers for the improvements of future simulation.

▼ The topic of the master thesis European Spatial Planning and Regional Development at the Blekinge Insitute of Technology is the Natura 2000 areas in Hungary. The aim is to review the Natura 2000 network, the management of these area at the EU level, and the situation in Hungary. Furthermore examine the Natural 2000 network in Hungary, to find, collect, realize and methodize the main problems of these places in association with Natura 2000. Finally I overview the aims of the Natura 2000 areas' management in the future.
In these „polluted” days the most important aims are the environmental protection and the nature conservation in the whole world. People take advantage of the nature without thinking of the consequences in the future. The Nature 2000 network is the key instrument for this protection in the European Union. It is an ecological network of protected areas; it helps to ensure the survival of Europe's most valuable species and habitats. After the accession to the European Union, Hungary added many valuable and unique sites to the European natural heritage. Hungary gives home for numerous species and habitat types that are not presented at the area of the other Member States. However beside the advantages several problems came with this to Natura 2000 areas, because of the economic backwardness of Hungary, which is deepened by today’s economical crisis. It is important to determine, classify and analyse the problems arising at the Natura 2000 areas and in this way these will help us to solve them.

▼ The straight line calm water performance of stepped
planing hulls has been studied experimentally, by prediction method, and numerically. A model test was conducted to provide a systematic understanding of the effects that displacement and step location have on the performance of a stepped
planing hull. Ten different step configurations were tested at three different displacements and over a range of four different speeds in calm water. Seven of these configurations were tested at two different Longitudinal Center of Gravity (LCG) locations. Of all the configurations tested, the stepped hull configurations showed reduced resistance compared to the unstepped hull. The configurations with the largest step height aft showed the least amount of resistance over the speed range tested. Increasing displacement and shifting LCG had similar effects on craft performance for both stepped and unstepped hulls. The current stepped hull prediction method was expanded to include a three dimension wave profile and the ability for the stagnation line to cross the step. Using previous model test data and existing two dimension wave profile equations, a single equation was developed to predict the three dimension wave profile aft of a step. Formulations were added to Savitsky's
planing prediction method to include very high speed craft and chines dry conditions. Lastly, two simulations were performed using two computational fluid dynamics numerical tools, OpenFOAM, and NFA. The results of these simulations were compared to the experimental test results to assess each code's relative strengths and weaknesses for use in detail design of stepped
planing craft.

▼ Planing hulls sometimes exhibit dynamic instabilities, endangering the safety of passengers and crew. Most of the efforts in understanding these phenomena have concentrated in the vertical plane (e.g., porpoising). Little has been done in the horizontal plane, where the emphasis has been placed in the understanding of progressive heeling. The physics and conditions under which
planing hulls will develop oscillatory roll instabilities (e.g., chine walking) are still not well understood and therefore there are not accepted guidelines to prevent them. Consistent with this need of understanding, in this research a method for investigating the conditions under which high-speed
planing hulls can exhibit large oscillatory roll motions parametrically excited by small heave and pitch motions is proposed.
A one-way coupling between heave-pitch and roll is assumed, and the roll equation of motion is written as a Hill's equation with third order non-linearities. The stability boundaries in the Ince-Strutt diagram are obtained, the influence of the different terms in the roll equation of motion on these boundaries is discussed, and conditions to be satisfied in order to avoid large amplitude periodic roll motions in the vicinity of the principal parametric resonance are derived.
In order to reduce the coefficients for the roll equation of motion, the generalized forces and moments acting on a
planing hull in asymmetric conditions are obtained by the 2D+t approach. Non-linear models are proposed for roll added mass and roll damping, based on Fourier analysis of the roll moment time series. It is shown that the presence of a third order harmonic of different sign than the first order harmonic in the out-of-phase component reduces the linear roll damping, increasing the probability of parametric roll.
Lastly, two of the conditions tested by Judge at the United States Naval Academy are used as case studies. The results show that high-speed
planing hulls running at low mean wetted length and low trim are more prone to develop parametric roll than
planing hulls running at high mean wetted length and high trim. This is consistent with what is observed in the field where lightly loaded high-speed
planing hulls sometimes exhibit "chine-walking".

▼ The worst scenario of drilling operation is blowout which is uncontrolled flow of formation fluid into the wellbore. Blowouts result in environmental damage with potential risk of injuries and fatalities. Although not all blowouts result in disaster, outcomes of blowouts are unknown and should be studied before starting an operation. Plans should be available to prevent blowouts or provide safe and secure ways of controlling the well before the drilling operation starts. The plan should include procedures in case of any blowout incident as a proactive measure.
A few commercial softwares are available in the industry for dynamic kill and transient modeling. All models are proprietary and very complex which reduces the flexibility of the program for specific cases. The purpose of this study is to develop a pseudo transient hydraulic simulator for dynamic kill operations. The idea and concept is to consider the flow of each phase as a single phase flow. The summation of hydrostatic and frictional pressure of each phase determines the bottomhole pressure during the dynamic kill operation. The simulator should be versatile and capable of handling special cases that may encounter during blowouts.
Some of the main features of the proposed dynamic kill simulator include; quick and robust simulation, fluid properties are corrected for pressure and temperature, sensitivity analysis can be performed through slide bars, and capable of handling variety of wellbore trajectories.
The results from the proposed simulator were compared to the result of commercial software, OLGA ABC. The results were in agreement with each other. It is recommended to apply the simulator for operations with required kill fluid volumes of one to two wellbore volumes.

▼ With the explosion of e-commerce in recent years, there is a strong desire for automated material handling solutions including warehousing robots. Cable driven parallel robots (CDPRs) are a relatively new concept which has yet to be explored for high-speed pick-&-place applications in the industry. Compared to rigid-link parallel robots, a CDPR possesses significant advantages including: large workspace, low moving inertia, high-speed motion, low power consumption, and incurring minimal maintenance cost. On the other hand, the main disadvantages of the CDPRs are the cable’s unilateral force exerting capability and low rigidity which is resulting in undesired vibrations of their moving platform. Kinematically-constrained CDPRs (KC-CDPRs) include a special class of CDPRs which provide a considerably higher level of stiffness in undesired degrees of freedom (DOFs) via connecting a set of constrained cables to the same actuator. Nevertheless, undesired vibrations of the moving platform are still their main problem which request more attention and investigation.
Dynamic modeling, stiffness optimization, vibration and trajectory-tracking control, and stiffness-based trajectory-planning of redundant KC-CDPRs are studied in this thesis. As a new technique, we separate the moving platform’s vibration equations from its desired (nominal) equations of motion. The obtained vibration model forms a linear parametric variable (LPV) dynamic system which is based for the following contributions:
1) Proposing a new tension optimization approach to minimize undesired perturbations under external disturbances in a desired direction; and demonstrating the effectiveness of kinematically-constrained actuation method in vibration attenuation of CDPRs in undesired DOFs. 2) Providing the opportunity of using a wide class of well-established robust and optimal LPV-based control methods, such as H∞ control techniques, for trajectory-tracking control of CDPRs to minimize the effect of disturbances on the robot operation; and showing the effectiveness of kinematically-constrained actuation method in control design simplification of such robots. 3) Proposing the concept of stiffness-based trajectory-planning to find the stiffness-optimum geometry of trajectories for KC-CDPRs; and designing a time-optimal zero-to-zero continuous-jerk motion to track such trajectories.
All the proposed concepts are developed for a generic KC-CDPR and verified via numerical analysis and experimental tests of a real planar warehousing KC-CDPR.

▼ The challenges that face MNPCs in making healthcare
more affordable is a topic that is being increasingly researched.
These companies face challenges such as pressure from governments
around the world to lower their prices, stagnant growth in
developed markets and the failing blockbuster business model.
Turning to new markets, such as emerging markets, for growth will
necessitate innovations in their business models. The aim of this
research was to understand what business models will work in
low-income patient markets, specifically in the South African base
of the pyramid context. The investigation of four MNPCs through a
case study methodology, allowed the exploration of their current
business models and ambidexterity level. Two of the four MNPCs
exhibited a purely exploitative business model and as such had very
little penetration into the BOP segment. One of the four MNPCs
demonstrated a few characteristics of ambidexterity, but applied
mainly an exploitative model and had limited access to the BOP
segment. One of the four companies implemented all of the
characteristics of business models that are successful in entering
BOP markets as well as a high level of correlation to the
characteristics of ambidexterity. The result of this MNPC described
was a successful entrance in the BOP segment. The review of the
literature and the findings of this research show that MNPCs can
adopt profitable business models to enter low-income markets that
not only serve consumers at the base of the pyramid but also
provide sustained business benefits to the MNPCs. The research
study successfully achieved the research objectives and provides
insights to stakeholders as to which strategies are effective when
entering a low-income patient market and what are the elements that
are missing from business models that are not successful. The
research also highlighted institutional voids and barriers that are
unique to the South African state health care system.

▼ Magistro darbo tyrimo tema – vadybinės
veiklos vertinimas laiko vadybos aspektu. Baigiamojo darbo
teorinėje dalyje išnagrinėta laiko valdymo problemų analizė F.
Tayloro mokslinuose darbuose.

▼ The transition towards a sustainable energy system in the built environment is commonly referred to the incremental adoption of a variety of available technologies, practices and policies that may contribute to decrease the environmental impact, at reasonable costs and adequate quality standards. The complexity of the transition requires a sound information provision in order to make decisions which are future proof and optimal in the context of the system dependencies by both public and private parties. This information provision is lacking maturity, and in the era of Big and Open Data, it is believed that data has a significant role to play in the improvement of the information provision towards all stakeholders. This paper presents a study on the information provision in the Dutch energy transition with the focus on the thermal urban transition away from natural-gas. The study adopts the DE approach to answer the following research question: How and under which Data Ecosystem can Open and Big Data be utilized to improve the information provision and support decision-making in the transition towards a sustainable urban thermal energy system, in the Netherlands, given the perceptions and resources of stakeholders?

▼ The vast majority of the research efforts in finite capacity scheduling over the past several years has focused on the generation of precise and almost exact measures for the working schedule presupposing complete information and a deterministic environment. During execution, however, production may be the subject of considerable variability, which may lead to frequent schedule interruptions. Production scheduling mechanisms are developed based on centralised control architecture in which all of the knowledge base and databases are modelled at the same location. This control architecture has difficulty in handling complex manufacturing systems that require knowledge and data at different locations. Adopting biological control principles refers to the process where a schedule is developed prior to the start of the processing after considering all the parameters involved at a resource involved and updated accordingly as the process executes. This research reviews the best practices in gene transcription and translation control methods and adopts these principles in the development of an autonomous finite capacity scheduling control logic aimed at reducing excessive use of manual input in planning tasks. With autonomous decision-making functionality, finite capacity scheduling will as much as practicably possible be able to respond autonomously to schedule disruptions by deployment of proactive scheduling procedures that may be used to revise or re-optimize the schedule when unexpected events occur. The novelty of this work is the ability of production resources to autonomously take decisions and the same way decisions are taken by autonomous entities in the process of gene transcription and translation. The idea has been implemented by the integration of simulation and modelling techniques with Taguchi analysis to investigate the contributions of finite capacity scheduling factors, and determination of the ‘what if’ scenarios encountered due to the existence of variability in production processes. The control logic adopts the induction rules as used in gene expression control mechanisms, studied in biological systems. Scheduling factors are identified to that effect and are investigated to find their effects on selected performance measurements for each resource in used. How they are used to deal with variability in the process is one major objective for this research as it is because of the variability that autonomous decision making becomes of interest. Although different scheduling techniques have been applied and are successful in production planning and control, the results obtained from the inclusion of the autonomous finite capacity scheduling control logic has proved that significant improvement can still be achieved.

Due to the rotational nature of the machining process, cuttermarks, in the form of waves, are created on the machined timber surface. It is the nature of these cuttermarks that determine the surface quality of the machined timber. It has been established that cutting tool inaccuracies and vibrations are a prime factor in the form of the cuttermarks on the timber surface. A principal aim of this thesis is to create a control architecture that is suitable for the adaptive operation of a wood planing machine in order to improve the surface quality of the machined timber. In order to improve the surface quality, a thorough understanding of the principals of wood planing is required. These principals are stated within this thesis and the ability to manipulate the rotary wood planing process, in order to achieve a higher surface quality, is shown. An existing test rig facility is utilised within this thesis, however upgrades to facilitate higher cutting and feed speeds, as well as possible future implementations such as extended cutting regimes, the test rig has been modified and enlarged. This test rig allows for the dynamic positioning of the centre of rotation of the cutterhead during a cutting operation through the use of piezo electric actuators, with a displacement range of ±15μm. A new controller for the system has been generated. Within this controller are a number of tuneable parameters. It was found that these parameters were dependant on a high number external factors, such as operating speeds and run‐out of the cutting knives. A novel approach to the generation of these parameters has been developed and implemented within the overall system. Both cutterhead inaccuracies and vibrations can be overcome, to some degree, by the vertical displacement of the cutterhead. However a crucial information element is not known, the particular displacement profile. Therefore a novel approach, consisting of a subtle change to the displacement profile and then a pattern matching approach, has been implemented onto the test rig. Within the pattern matching approach the surface profiles are simplified to a basic form. This basic form allows for a much simplified approach to the pattern matching whilst producing a result suitable for the subtle change approach. In order to compress the data levels a Principal Component Analysis was performed on the measured surface data. Patterns were found to be present in the resultant data matrix and so investigations into defect classification techniques have been carried out using both K‐Nearest Neighbour techniques and Neural Networks. The application of these novel approaches has yielded a higher system performance, for no additional cost to the mechanical components of the wood planing machine, both in terms of wood throughput and machined timber surface quality.

▼ Flight and drop tests of the Martin 270 (M270) seaplane were conducted in 1955. Theoretical and empirical pressures were determined by use of Wagner’s theory and also by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The pressure results from the experimental tests on the hull were compared with pressures calculated from Wagner’s theory to determine how well the theory correlated with the measured pressures. The experimental pressure data was also compared with the CFR results to determine how the current industry standard of estimating impact loads compares with actual pressures a seaplane is subjected to.
Using the structural design and geometry of the M270 the seaplane hull was modeled in Maestro with a coarse mesh finite element model. The pressures from Wagner’s theory and the CFR were applied to the model of the M270 hull. The structural reactions of the drop test section were compared with the reactions determined from Maestro.

▼ High speed
planing craft play key roles in supporting several critical maritime activities, e.g., coastal surveillance, reconnaissance, life-saving operations, passenger and high value cargo transport. Despite their significant use, formal optimization frameworks have rarely been proposed to deal with their design challenges. In this thesis, an optimization framework for the preliminary design of high speed
planing craft is presented. Several case studies of single- and multi-objective formulations of high speed
planing craft design problem are solved using state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The notion of scenario-based design optimization and innovization, i.e. a means to uncover design relations are also discussed.A modular, extensible design optimization framework that allows the analysis tools to be extended or replaced with the desired level of complexity or with the state-of-the-art analysis tools is proposed in this thesis. A validated 3D mathematical model of high speed
planing craft hull form has been identified in this thesis. The use of global parametric transformation that preserves surface fairness and allows for the presence of curve discontinuities is incorporated. A suite of three state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, namely NSGA-II, IDEA and SA-EA is incorporated within the framework. The performances of the algorithms are compared using the case studies. Solutions to single-objective minimization of calm water resistance, resistance in a seaway and multi-objective formulations considering minimization of total resistance, vertical impact acceleration and steady turning diameter have been presented. The capability of the framework to capture design trade-offs is illustrated. The case studies are extended to provide for scenario-based design optimization in order to demonstrate the capability of the framework to solve optimization problems based on the ship's operational profile and operating conditions. A concept of innovization, which allows for the automatic discovery of design rules governing optimum hull forms, is introduced. The relationship gathered through the process of innovization is applied as a cheap pseudo-performance indicator within an optimization formulation, where the results compare favourably with the empirical estimate obtained from experimental data. Such extensions are new contributions to the ship design discipline, in which opens up the possibility of the development of optimum design rules for any particular ship class.

▼ Puccini’s Suor Angelica is a work that has received
minimal attention from music theorists and analysts. James
Hepokoski has proposed a rotational structure based on four of the
work’s forty-nine themes, though it covers only one third of the
opera. Michele Girardi and Andrew Davis have made note of some
motivic relationships but in an unsystematic way. Harmonic
planing
is a major feature of Suor Angelica yet it has not been given any
specific analytical attention. This thesis expands these previous
analyses by providing a detailed thematic time-line that includes
all of the opera’s themes, by showing that many of these themes can
be unified through a three-note motive, and by exploring the types
of
planing Puccini used most often and the contexts in which he
used them. The resulting thematic time-line shows that only
fourteen of the opera’s forty-nine themes are ever repeated and
that James Hepokoski’s rotational analysis explains only a small
portion of the entire work’s thematic structure, leaving
thirty-five themes unaccounted for. The motivic analysis
demonstrates a relationship between many of the opera’s themes and
demonstrates that the opening and ending of the opera have a
particularly strong motivic connection, though themes including a
recurring three-note motive are shown to occur consistently
throughout the opera. Themes containing the motive are then proven
to occur consistently throughout the opera when its appearances are
placed against the thematic time-line. Finally, a survey of all
passages involving
planing, identifying their location, the type of
planing and the type of chords used, reveals that
planing is
likewise a consistent feature of Suor Angelica.

implementação destes sistemas é difícil e dispendiosa para as empresas e requer a
disponibilidade de muitos recursos, tanto físicos como financeiros. Nesse sentido a empresa

▼ Thirty patients with the diagnosis of early
or moderate periodontitis, between 26 and 58 years of age were
included in the study. The patient selection criteria were: no
periodontal treatment received within the last 12 months, no
systemic diseases, that could influence the outcome of the therapy,
no use of systemic antibiotics at least 6 months prior to, during
and 12 months after the treatment, non smokers and not pregnant.
The study was performed according to a split-mouth design, on
single-rooted teeth. A total of 278 teeth exhibiting gingival
inflammation with positive bleeding on probing, subgingival
calculus and a probing depth more than 3 mm were selected for
examination. Of 1668 examined sites, 1088 sites exhibited the
probing depth > 3 to 6 mm. Every participant received both types
of treatment using different mouth quadrants. On one side, the
teeth were treated by scaling and root planing only, the teeth of
the contra-lateral side were treated by Er;Cr:YSGG laser
immediately after SRP. Laser, at a setting of 1W, 10% air and 15%

▼ A noticeable change in the structure of the Spanish pork sector has been observed in recent years. Pig farms have become more and more specialized and the size of their operations has been increasing. Moreover, modern pig farms have tended to integrate and coordinate their operations into Pork Supply Chain (PSC). Thus, the overall aim of this thesis was to formulate a set of models to support sow herd management and piglet production in a pork supply chain context, giving practical answers to relevant questions often asked by decision makers. Hence, the main strategic and tactical decisions regarding sow herds and piglet production management in a pork supply chain context were considered. Basically, four models under uncertainty were developed. The first one was a linear programming formulation of a semi-Markov model to design pig facilities. It showed that herd distribution based on physiological states and movements between facilities were useful to calculate the room needs for each sow facility. The formulation considers recent EU regulations regarding animal welfare and the impact on economic cost of housing facilities. Ongoing with animal welfare issues, a framework for the integration of clinical signs into a sow replacement model was developed. The sow replacement model used in the framework was a multi-level hierarchical Markov process using Bayesian updating. The results showed how the incorporation of clinical signs in sow replacement models led to better culling policies through more efficient detection of the weakest sows in the herd. The next two models formulated under finite time horizon showed the herd distribution or structure moving to the steady state. Temporary shocks in parameters or transitory perturbations were better represented by finite time horizon models where scenarios collected part of the uncertainty of the system. The use of Linear Programming led to incorporate herd constraints more easily than in a Markov Decision Process. Finally the two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse showed to be a suitable tool to deal with the uncertainty of the system through scenarios. Additional benefits for practical purpose were the scheduling of purchasing of gilts, planning piglet production and replacement policy, all under a rolling time horizon scheme. Nowadays, with the current structure of the sector, it is reasonable to think about models capable of solving more accurately problems involving two or more stages of the chain, and integrating them all together in some information system, in order to improve the management of the PSC. Hence the models presented in this thesis are suitable tools to deal with main strategic and tactical decisions in sow herds producing piglets in a general PSC context.

▼ One aspect of integrated water resources management is the sustainable management of river systems to preserve ecosystems. Historically, environmental flow (e-flow) requirements were specified as a minimum allowable flow, though recent research has suggested that all aspects of a flow regime are ecologically important. To better reflect the natural variability of the river system, e-flows now vary from year-to-year and include target baseflows and flood pulses. Many required e-flows are for reaches directly below reservoirs, where human abstractions have degraded the natural variability of the rivers but management can help sustain the river ecosystem through modifications to reservoir operations. In order to understand the reliability of meeting complex e-flow requirements in the future, e-flows need to be incorporated into a long-term planning model where the reliability can be analyzed. Since planning models operate at the monthly timescale and e-flows are stated in days the integration is not directly achievable. This research aims to address the scale issues associated with integrating e-flow requirements into planning models. Since reservoir operations are required to meet e-flow targets, the focus is on incorporating complex sub-monthly reservoir operations into a planning model. This requires multiple facets: 1) The temporal scale issues that exist between daily e-flow requirements and the monthly operations of the reservoirs in the model must be resolved. 2) Reservoir releases rely on unregulated tributaries to sustain higher downstream e-flow targets, thus daily flows from the unregulated tributaries are also necessary. 3) Hydrologic year types guide reservoir operations to meet different e-flow targets, thus they must be incorporated into the model to capture reservoir operations. Finally, after addressing the integration of new reservoir operations into the planning model, flow alteration – the degree to which a river is departed from a baseline state – is presented as a metric for the reliability of meeting e-flows. Through an example application on the Colorado River Basin, the techniques are demonstrated to have utility. The successful incorporation of daily reservoir requirements into a monthly model is a key result. Further results under multiple supply and demand scenarios are used to highlight the key components in the modeling framework and to demonstrate their use under a nonstationary climate.

▼ The future promises to be rife with ecological change. Ultimately, climate change - coupled with population growth, will require the development of new strategies regarding food production and urban space; there will be less arable land, and more people feed. This thesis addresses a problem of cultural values, how urban space is wastefully used in spite of the problems facing society. Why do Americans choose to grow grass instead of food? Architecture has always been involved in the construction of the city. As a profession, architecture has an opportunity to gain new importance as one directly responsible for environmental strategies and questions. Architecture is the language to integrate the food system into built environment and build local, sustainable loops. This thesis proposes uses architectural programming and built intervention to develop and support a network of small urban farms, together forming a viable and significant piece of a local food system. The design of this project is threefold, and includes a network, a shed, and a central hub, that work together as a cohesive system.

▼ The undeniable benefits of urban open spaces, such as parks and urban forests, has triggered a steady increase in “natural capital” demands. Nevertheless, the uncertainties surrounding open spaces and ecosystem services jeopardize their consideration in public decision making. Certain of their aspects are not fully translatable in economic terms, primarily due to the absence of proper valuation tools. This results in not only under-provisioning of natural capital, but also unsustainable urban development. Hence, an imperative need to incorporate efficient ecosystem valuation tools emerges. The objective of this research is twofold. Firstly, it aims to prove and quantify the influence of urban open spaces on the surrounding real estate’s market value. Secondly, it investigates which characteristics of these spaces bear the largest impact, with a particular interest in ecosystem services. The methodology employed in the present study is a combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative part, designated as Phase I, includes the establishment of a hedonic pricing model, which quantifies the added value of proximity to the selected clustered open spaces, which are also called “Ecosystem Service Hubs” (ESHs). The qualitative part, addressed as Phase II, swifts the focus from the housing samples to the ESHs. It consists of activities attempting an ecological profiling of the ESHs. Phase I’s Hub Hedonic Pricing model revealed that ESH1 bears the largest influence on surrounding real estate, followed by ESH3 and ESH2. Notably, a 1% increase in distance would lead to approximately 2,7€, 0,8€ and 1,6€ per m2 for each hub respectively. Inserting the distance variable as a dummy variable, instead of a continuous one, displayed a similar behaviour. Thence, each housing sample is divided into categories in order to execute a distance effect sensitivity analysis. It is suggested that “young, large, row houses in greener neighborhoods” exhibit the largest distance decay effect sensitivity. Lastly, the overarching monetary values are roughly estimated. These are 5,81, 1,98 and 3,28 million € for each hub respectively, whereas the average value per m2 per house is 77,44€, 57,68€ and 107,47€ respectively. Concerning Phase II, the ESHs’ core components and characteristics are identified. Then, an association between the economic benefits and the core characteristics is attempted, through qualitative correlations. These are summed up in the following statement: “Ecosystem Service Hubs generate higher economic benefits when they are larger and more diverse, in terms of both composition and ecosystem services, with a significant sensitivity to recreational opportunities”. This research’s findings could prove to be insightful for urban planning, since they could be applied in two major ways. Firstly, given an identified Ecosystem Service Hub, the development of the surrounding area could be adjusted to encompass primarily the optimal house and neighborhood characteristics. Secondly, given the “house…
