Studying the large-scale structure of the universe is one of the most important elements to understand the origin and evolution of the universe. Galaxy clusters which formed from gravitational collapses in the cosmic density field are the largest gravitationally bound structures. Using the two-point correlation we can quantify the clustering of galaxy clusters in both spatial and angular scales. Many galaxy surveys have been carried out for similar purpose. The Planck Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) cluster catalog contains sources detected through the SZ effect from the 29-month full sky Planck mission. This is the largest SZ cluster catalog and it covers about 85% of the sky. In this thesis, we investigate the angular two-point correlation…

▼ This dissertation focuses on catalogs and other
publications that served as critiques of conventional art and
museum practice by artists and curators of American art during the
1970s. This study attends to both experimental forms of curating
and the publications that accompanied them, as well as to the
catalog as an exhibition or curatorial process in itself. The
objects of this study, often collaboratively produced, were lodged
between the traditional categories of art,
catalog, exhibition, and
book. “Cataloguing Critique” explores the idea of “curating” a
catalog, when artist curators work as authors, editors, and
producers. By looking closely at particular curatorial and
publication projects of the early to mid 1970s, this project
endeavors to highlight the importance of the exhibition
catalog as
a site of expression, political critique, and collective action
among American artists at the time. ❧ These case studies provide
examples in which artists and curators radically experimented with
the formal and conceptual possibilities of the printed
catalog. In
each of them, the
catalog fulfills a function beyond that of
documentation. The manipulation of images, text, and attention to
format, layout, and binding play a part in the objects of this
study as they do in other printed artistic media. This conception
of the
catalog as a space of exploration parallels the growth in
artists’ books and self-published magazines in the twentieth
century. If artists’ books and magazines live at the margins rather
than the established center, then the catalogs examined in this
project lie somewhere in between. The artists, curators, critics,
and collectives featured in this project operated in dialogue with
institutions at some level, seeking to augment or even undermine an
exhibition by presenting supplementary, alternative, or
oppositional ideas and images within the catalogs they produced. ❧
The subjects of this study show how, in the late 1960s and 1970s,
curators, artists, and critics increasingly called into question
the purpose of the museum as a passive and ideologically neutral
space of display. The precedent of non-traditional, experimental
catalogs explored early in the dissertation paved the way for
activist and feminist approaches to formulating, documenting, and
also critiquing exhibitions. Thus this project also contributes to
existing scholarship on collective action among American artists
during this period to mount political critiques through their
actions or their art production. The objects of this study fall
within that same context, and an expanded view of American art
history should include them. ❧ Rather than emphasize the
differences among experimental exhibition catalogs in post-war
American art, this project seeks to foreground what this material
has in common. The producers of these objects revised the
audience’s expectations about how catalogs function. They redefined
the role of the traditional
catalog from that of documentation to
one with the potential to express critical or contradictory
viewpoints…

▼ The Mackenzie Mountains are an actively uplifting and seismogenic arcuate thrust belt lying within the Northwest Territories and Yukon, Canada. Seismic activity in the region is poorly constrained due to a historically sparse seismograph distribution. In this study, new data are analyzed from the 40-station, ~875 km-long Mackenzie Mountains temporary network (Baker et al., 2020) crossing the Cordillera-Craton region adjacent to and within the Mackenzie Mountains, in conjunction with Transportable Array and other sparsely distributed arrays in the region. Data from approximately August 2016 – August 2018 are processed and compared to the sparse-network earthquake
catalog records maintained by the USGS and Natural Resources Canada. Using algorithms developed by Kushnir et al. (1990), Rawles and Thurber (2015), and Roecker et al. (2006), signals are identified and subsequently associated across the network to note potential events, estimate phase onsets, and resolve hypocenter locations. This study improves the regional earthquake
catalog by detecting smaller-magnitude earthquakes and lowering the regional magnitude of completeness from Mc = 2.5 to 1.9. Within the Mackenzie Mountains and immediately surrounding areas we find 524 new events and additionally recommend an updated location for 185 previously cataloged events. Our b-value computation for the updated
catalog (0.916 ± 0.08) likely indicates a relatively high level of regional differential stress. We identify the spatial distribution of earthquakes in the Mackenzie Mountains as diffuse, and offer far-field stress transfer as a mechanism for producing widespread reverse faulting observed in the region. Further, we associate regional seismicity with tectonic activity in the context of known faults and orogenic provinces such as the Richardson Mountains.

▼ Galaxy clusters can be used as a sensitive probe for cosmology. A large
cluster catalog that extends to high redshift with well measured masses is indispensable for precisely constraining
cosmological parameters. Detecting clusters in optical bands is very efficient. Multi-color CCD photometry allows combined detection and redshift estimation for clusters across broad redshift ranges. However, the lack of precise information about galaxy positions along the line of sight leads to contamination by projection, which
plagues both
cluster detection and the measurement of their properties. The dominance of red sequence galaxies, tightly clustered along the E/S0 ridgeline, provides a powerful method for
de-projecting field galaxies.
We developed an Error Corrected Gaussian Mixture Model to fit the galaxies' color distribution around clusters by taking into account the measurement errors. By this technique, we can detect the red sequence color clustering and extract unbiased information about the evolution of the red sequence ridgeline and its width. Precision measurements of ridgelines yields better estimates of
cluster richness and possibly their dynamical state, leading to better estimates of
cluster mass.
By using the red sequence clustering in color space identified from the Error Corrected Gaussian Mixture Model, together with the
projected NFW filter in the projected RA/DEC plane, we developed a new and efficient
cluster finding algorithm that can reliably detect
galaxy clusters across the redshift range from 0.1 to 1.4. We have also run the
cluster finder on legacy SDSS DR7 data and assembled an
approximately volume limited
cluster catalog across redshifts from 0.1 to 0.5. The algorithm has been tested against a Monte Carlo mock
catalog, showing the identified clusters are highly complete and pure.
With the completion of this thesis, we build the first and essential step towards precision
cluster cosmology. Meanwhile, the large optical
cluster catalog across a wide redshift range makes possible the systematic and detailed investigation of
cluster formation and evolution.

▼ In this thesis, we design, analyze, and numerically validate positive and energy-
dissipating schemes for solving Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations and Fokker-Planck (FP) equations with interaction potentials. These equations play an important role in modeling the dynamics of charged particles in semiconductors and biological ion channels, as well as in other applications. These model equations are nonlinear/nonlocal gradient flows in density space, and their explicit solutions are rarely available; however, solutions to such problems feature intrinsic properties such as (i) solution positivity, (ii) mass conservation, and (iii) energy dissipation. These physically relevant properties are highly desirable to be preserved at the discrete level with the least time-step restrictions.
We first construct our schemes for a reduced PNP model, then extend to multi-dimensional PNP equations and a class of FP equations with interaction potentials. The common strategies in the construction of the baseline schemes include two ingredients: (i) reformulation of each underlying model so that the resulting system is more suitable for constructing positive schemes, and (ii) integration of semi-implicit time discretization and central spatial discretization. For each model equation, we show that the semi-discrete schemes (continuous in time) preserve all three solution properties (positivity, mass conservation, and energy dissipation). The fully discrete first order schemes preserve solution positivity and mass conservation for arbitrary time steps. Moreover, there exists a discrete energy function which dissipates along time marching with an O(1) bound on time steps.
We show that the second order (in both time and space) schemes preserve solution positivity for suitably small time steps; for larger time steps, we apply a local limiter to restore the solution positivity. We prove that such limiter preserves local mass and does not destroy the approximation accuracy. In addition, the limiter provides a reliable way of restoring solution positivity for other high order conservative finite difference or finite volume schemes.
Both the first and second order schemes are linear and can be efficiently implemented without resorting to any iteration method. The second order schemes are only slight modifications of the first order schemes. Computational costs of a single time step for first and second order schemes are similar, hence our second-order in time schemes are efficient than the first-order in time schemes, given a larger time step could be utilized (to save computational cost). We conduct extensive numerical tests that support our theoretical results and illustrate the accuracy, efficiency, and capacity to preserve the solution properties of our schemes.

Space debris have become a significant threat to the viability of operational satellites in Low-Earth-Orbit. In order to avoid accidental collisions, space surveillance systems exist but their detection performance is limited for the small debris (less than 10cm). New solutions are then at study. This thesis aims at supporting the feasibility of a ground-based radar sensor with a narrow-fence type field of regard for the cataloging of the small space debris. Such a system would produce “isolated” observations, that is to say that an orbit is not directly available from each one of them. The large number of potential combinations is then computationally prohibitive for solving this tracking problem. In this work, we propose a new method for track initiation, i.e. associating isolated observations with little ambiguity and deduce accurate orbits. The obtained set of tracks are combined and filtered using an multitarget tracking algorithm that we have adapted to the peculiarities of the problem. With a coverage rate of more than 80% in real-time on 3 days for 500 to 800-objects scenarios in addition of a high false alarm rate, the performance of the proposed method supports the…

The subduction zones are the most seismically active places in the world and are also the seat of megathrust-earthquakes such as the one that stroke Chile in 1960 with a magnitude estimated at 9.5. The last major ruptures in Chile have revealed complex seismic-aseismic interactions. In order to study these interactions, we investigated on at two seismic crises: the seismic swarm of April 2017; the preparatory phase of the Iquique earthquake (M w 8.1) from April 1 st , 2014. The seismic swarm took place near the city of Valparaiso in an area known to have experienced mega-earthquakes in the past: in 1730 and in 1906. In order to study the dynamics of this swarm we have built a rich catalog of more than 2000 earthquakes composing the sequence. An intense seismic activity began on April 22 nd , two days before the main earthquake of the sequence M w 6.9 and was accompanied by a gradual slip along the interface that we observed both in the GPS data and using repeating-earthquakes. Our analysis suggest that the swarm was driven by aseismic slip. The second study concerns an earthquake of mag-nitude 8.2 which occurred on April 1 st 2014 near the city of Iquique and broke one-third of the seismic gap in northern…

▼ MR.VISHWASThe most striking feature of Earth is the
existence of life, and the most striking feature of life is its
diversity, popularly known as biological diversity or biodiversity.
Biodiversity is the biological capital of our planet and it forms
the foundation upon which the human civilization is built. It is
fundamental for the Earth s life support system. The history of
human civilization and material culture and development of economic
systems are all indirectly associated with the use and management
of biotic and abiotic resources, together called as natural
resources . These natural resources are often taken for granted
which provide much essential natural service. Hence, it is in the
interest of mankind that these resources are used in sustainable
manner, cautiously, so as to ensure continued survival of human
race on this planet. Efficient access to knowledge base on these
natural resources and process is essential for their effective
conservation and sustainable use. The term quotBiodiversity
Informaticsquot was coined to circumscribe the application of
information technology tools and technology to biodiversity
information, principally at the organismic level. It thus deals
with information capture, storage, provision, retrieval, and
analysis, focused on individual organisms, populations, and taxa,
and their interaction. It covers the information generated by the
fields of systematics (including molecular systematics),
evolutionary biology, population biology, behavioural sciences, and
synecological fields ranging from pollination biology to parasitism
and phytosociology. Biodiversity Informatics is considered a part
of biological informatics sandwiched between - and strongly
overlapping with - environmental informatics and molecular
bioinformatics. It will provide the skeleton for a generalized
scientific information infrastructure in biology.

▼ The rest-frame UV, optical, and X-ray are important wavebands to study quasar activities because they trace ionization phases and dynamical properties of the physical structures surrounding the central engine, including the accretion disk, the broad line region, and the outflow.
This thesis investigates the correlations of spectral components (continua, emission lines and absorption lines) and the physical conditions implied by these components using well-defined samples of spectra from the archives of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the
International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), the Swift Space Telescope, and the Keck Telescope. The scientific goal of these studies is to produce a set of well-documented properties of quasar UV, optical, and X-ray spectra that will provide important constraints on models of the quasar phenomenon.
The UV and optical continuum properties are studied using a set of composite quasar spectra created from the SDSS quasar
catalog. We discovered a dependency of the continuum shape on both quasar luminosity and redshift, and found that the Baldwin Effect, in which the equivalent width of an emission line is
anti-correlated with the continuum, applies for most of the broad emission lines. Focusing on the CIV emission line, we construct a sample which consists of 272 Type 1 AGNs. An analysis of this sample indicates that the changes of the EWs are
controlled by both UV and soft X-ray emissions, suggesting that
the UV and X-ray emissions are closely related.
We show that variability is an important contributor to the scatter of many important correlations, such as the Baldwin Effect, as well as the quasar spectral energy distribution (SED) between optical and X-ray. In order to eliminate the influence of variability, we compiled a
catalog of quasars with simultaneous UV, optical and X-ray observations from the Swift gamma-ray-burst explorer. Using the Swift data, plus the photometric data from SDSS, we constructed a set of composite quasar SEDs for most of the objects in our
catalog. We use this set of SEDs to constrain the amplitude of the big blue
bump. We also re-visit the l_uv-alpha_ox relation and demonstrate that the dispersion of this correlation can be reduced by ~20% using this simultaneously observed sample.
Quasar intrinsic absorption lines are important diagnoses of the quasar outflow. Models of intrinsic narrow absorption line systems towards three high redshift quasars from Keck/HIRES, reveals high ionization levels and super-solar metallicities of these absorbers, indicating vigorous star formation occurred before the quasars become visible.

▼ The Epoch of Reionization represents a largely unexplored yet fundamental chapter of the early universe. During this period, spanning several hundred million years, the first stars and galaxies formed and the Hydrogen-dominated intergalactic medium transitioned from a predominantly neutral to ionized state. Modern efforts to study exactly when and how reionization occurred are largely focused on the distribution of neutral Hydrogen gas and its evolution in response to the increasing abundance of luminous objects and ionizing flux. The Murchison Widefield Array is a low frequency radio interferometer designed as a first generation EoR experiment. The predominant systematic difficulty in making a detection of the primordial HI signal is the overwhelmingly bright emission from the intervening fore- ground galaxies and quasars. This thesis presents novel survey methods used to create a highly precise and reliable
catalog of discrete extragalactic sources for the purposes of both calibration and foreground removal.

▼ The objective of this study was to create a comprehensive record of the vascular plants of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Specimens were collected from the field during the 2011 growing season (March 21 – October 27), and for part of the 2012 growing season (March 22 – May 30). Local herbaria of James Madison University (JMUH), Bridgewater College (BDWR), Eastern Mennonite University (HAVI) and Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) were also searched for pre-existing specimens. The results of the study were compared to records of the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora (2012), which currently maps the distribution of vascular plants in Virginia. The survey resulted in 53 new additions to the county record, including 2 new state records for Virginia. The combined results of the field collections, herbarium specimens, and Digital Atlas comprise a total of 1,299 species in 563 genera and 143 families. Of these, 57 species are ferns and fern allies, 8 are gymnosperms, 322 are monocots and 912 are dicots. The records represent 1,014 native species to Virginia, 268 introduced, and 14 unspecified by the Digital Atlas. Voucher specimens of the new field collections are housed in the James Madison University Herbarium.

▼ A museum
catalog is a legible, interpretable information system that acts as a rhetorical exposition of the museum’s collection and work. The unity of a collection is of course distinct from that represented in a
catalog, and still further from the reader’s experience of it. But the information that comprises such an assemblage of individual records or representations, consistent metadata, support the ability to “read” collections as finite, enclosed, or complete. Here I perform a close reading of the elements and relationships that underpin the Walker Art Center’s online Permanent Collection
catalog, an emergent publication funded by The Getty Foundation’s Online Scholarly
Catalog Initiative (OSCI). I incorporate multiple layers of interpretation into my reading of the structure and contents of the museum website, drawing on concepts developed in information science and textual studies by Bonnie Mak and Johanna Drucker. My performance of reading of the new
catalog helps me begin to address how collectively, online representation in virtual frames, contextualization within a website, searching, and browsing support divergent interpretations of a collection catalogue as a text. I conclude that to engage a
catalog at a scholarly level, and to interpret and synthesize meaning of the
catalog as a text, the museum must situate its self-representation spatially and temporally.

▼ One of the main impediments to realising the Semantic Web vision is that most scientific data, even those data deployed on the web, are not generally expressed or encoded in an unambiguously defined, machine-interpretable manner. This is particularly the case for Antarctic-themed data. Ontologies that are linked to datasets via semantic annotation are required to achieve semantic-enablement of scientific data infrastructure. In scientific communities that adhere to the Open Geospatial Consortium Service-Oriented-Architecture (Web services) paradigm, Feature Catalogues are the repositories intended to manage and publish descriptions of dataset concepts. This thesis explores how Feature Catalogues can be ontologically-grounded to facilitate semantic annotation and in doing so addresses the lack of guidance in current standards about how to configure an ontologically grounded Feature Catalogue and how best to access the resources it contains for the semantic annotation of Web services. Also investigated is how ontology selection and evaluation is currently taking place in practise because ontology evaluation methodologies mentioned in the literature are resource intensive to apply, often requiring a high level of ontological expertise. Both contributions seek to lower barriers for ontology uptake and reuse within scientific communities.
To address these issues, two scientific communities of practise (i.e., AODN and SCAR) were used as case studies within a Design Science research method to ground-truth the design and to prototype an ontologically grounded, service-enabled Feature Catalogue. To address research questions pertaining to ontology selection and evaluation practise, fourteen experts (from outside of the AODN and SCAR communities) with experience in building semantically-enabled scientific infrastructure, were surveyed and interviewed to ascertain what ontology evaluation methods and criteria are being used in practise. A hierarchical evaluation model was established from analysed expert data using Template Analysis (Crabtree and Miller, 1992; King, 2004). The Analytical Hierarchical Processing (AHP) technique (Saaty, 1980), was then harnessed to establish the relative importance given by experts to each of the model elements.
The contributions arising consisted of an enhanced ISO 19110 Feature Catalogue model which accommodated additional concepts necessary to describe the observation-centric dataset paradigms of the two case study communities. The extended conceptual model was semantically grounded using the DOLCE (upper ontology) and expressed in both OWL and SKOS. Demonstration REST-based service interfaces (and REST query patterns) were created for serving Catalogue content to requesting Web clients. To the author’s knowledge, no other Feature Catalogue implementation, founded on the ISO 19110 conceptual model, has attempted to model the Catalogue as an ontology, or permits access to Catalogue content via REST-based service interfaces. This thesis also delivers a “practical” framework for evaluating and…

▼ Macroseismic data in the form of felt reports of earthquake shaking is vital to seismic hazard assessment, especially in view of the relatively short period of instrumental recording in many countries. During the early 1990s, a very detailed examination of historical earthquake records held in the State Government archives and the Public Library of South Australia was carried out by myself. This original work resulted in the compilation of a list of just over 460 earthquakes in the period prior to seismic network recording, which commenced in 1963, The majority of these events had escaped mention in any previous publication on South Australian seismicity and seismic risk. This historical earthquake research, including the production of a large number of isoseismal maps to enable earthquake quantification in terms of magnitude and location, appears to have been the only study of its kind in South Australia performed so comprehensively, and resulted in the most extensive list available. After 20 years, it still stands as the definitive list of historical earthquake events in the state. The incorporation of these additional historical events into the South Australian Earthquake Catalogue maintained by the SA Department of Primary Industries and Resources had the potential to raise the previous listing of just 49 pre-instrumental events to 511 earthquakes, and to extend it back another 46 years to 1837. Some of the major events have been formally included in the South Australian Earthquake Catalogue. However, for many events, there was insufficient information and/or time to finalise the source parameters due to the onerous task of manually trawling through historical records and newspapers for felt reports. With the advent of the information age, researching historical newspapers and records is now a feasible undertaking. As an example, I recovered reports of an additional 110 previously unrecognised events during the first 50 years of colonisation from digitised South Australian newspapers, recently made available on the National Library of Australia’s website called TROVE. This was done in a relatively short period of time and now the South Australian Historical Earthquake List incorporating these events comprises some 679 entries. This thesis builds upon and consolidates the work that was commenced 20 years ago. By doing so, it proposes the establishment of flexible and convenient computerized processes to maintain well into the future an increasingly accurate record of historical earthquakes in South Australia. This work may also provide a model for the ongoing development of historical earthquake records in other states and territories of Australia.

This thesis proposes a study of the ancient and modern uses of a passage from the second Book of the Iliad, known since the 5th century before our era under the designation « Catalogue of Ships ». This passage became a sort of paradigm of a particular mode of utterance, the « catalogue mode of enunciation » (καταλέγειν), which great number of the modern studies had interpreted as an ideal way to describe the reality of the past in a discursive order closely related to the transmission of a « truth », or rather being in the origins of the writing of history. We assume that this reading had an impact on a number of modern studies and it is a consequence of them as well. Such impacts are far from being meaningless, once they had led to consider the catalogue as a document judged reliable to find the « Homeric Greece » and, who knows, to answer to other « Homeric questions». The status of « catalogue » in this passage nevertheless echoes the practice which, as other studies had shown, goes back not only to the diversity of the poetical production from the archaic period - including the Iliad where this practice presents itself as an original interlocution mode - but extends it far beyond. On turning towards some ancient uses of the speeches in catalogue, particularly the ones from the Catalogue of Ships, we aim to understand to what other functions (those being close or not from the ones identified by the modern texts) this enunciative…

impossibilitava a descongelação completa do pescado.
Planck e do
Planck, pescado.

Abstract
The internship took place at Eurest Portugal, a company belonging by Compass
Group that is the world leader in the provider of power and management of canteens
services, both in the public and in the collective restoration. The management of
canteens implies a correct and efficient handling of all products and raw materials.
The
subject of this work arose due to the company´s need to define the average
defrosting times for several species of fish, as well as the determination of the
percentages of water glazing of the received fish in order to establish whether the
information declared in the label was correct.
The method described in the Decree Law nº 37 of 2004 the percentage of water
glazing of 37 fish samples (339 units), which involved a total of 12 species and 9 was
determined suppliers. The percentages stated on the labels with the percentages
determined experimentally were compared and only 5.6% of the labels had the same
percentage to that determined experimentally.
Relatively to defrosting times were measured times of 1713.16 kg of…

▼ A stochastic process or sometimes called random process is the counterpart to a deterministic process in theory. A stochastic process is a random field, whose domain is a region of space, in other words, a random function whose arguments are drawn from a range of continuously changing values. In this case, Instead of dealing only with one possible 'reality' of how the process might evolve under time (as is the case, for example, for solutions of an ordinary differential equation), in a stochastic or random process there is some indeterminacy in its future evolution described by probability distributions. This means that even if the initial condition (or starting point) is known, there are many possibilities the process might go to, but some paths are more probable and others less. However, in discrete time, a stochastic process amounts to a sequence of random variables known as a time series. Over the past decades, the problems of synergetic are concerned with the study of macroscopic quantitative changes of systems belonging to various disciplines such as natural science, physical science and electrical engineering. When such transition from one state to another take place, fluctuations i.e. (random process) may play an important role. Fluctuations in its sense are very common in a large number of fields and nearly every system is subjected to complicated external or internal influences that are often termed noise or fluctuations. Fokker-Planck equation has turned out to provide a powerful tool with which the effects of fluctuation or noise close to transition points can be adequately be treated. For this reason, in this thesis work analytical and numerical methods of solving Fokker-Planck equation, its derivation and some of its applications will be carefully treated. Emphasis will be on both for one variable and N- dimensional cases.

▼ We describe the design and characterization of the SPIDER balloon-borne experiment which will launch from Antarctica in December 2014. The experiment is designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with unparalleled instantaneous sensitivity, and in doing so, constrain early universe models. The experiment is ready to deploy. We will emphasize: 1) The cryogenic architecture of the SPIDER flight cryostat. 2) The design and characterization of a capillary assembly which provides a continuous flow of superfluid helium to a 1.8 K temperature stage required to operate adsorption refrigerators cooling each focal plane. 3) The design and build of a Fourier transform spectrometer used to characterize the spectral response of the SPIDER detectors. 4) The optical characterization of the SPIDER telescopes and simulations characterizing susceptibility to polarized sidelobes contamination.
We also describe the analysis of the spatial (beam) response of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) onboard the
Planck satellite. This characterization work is required for high fidelity cosmological analysis of all-sky maps in six frequency bands spanning 100 to 857 GHz. The beam reconstruction error and bias are constrained using time-domain simulations that include the most significant non-idealities that affect the analysis. Using these simulations, we also verify the consistency of the beam product used for cosmological analysis of the 2014 data release. As part of the beam reconstruction, we characterize the flux of the five outer planets in the six HFI frequency bands. We also verify the absolute photometric calibration of the experiment by comparing planet flux estimates with existing models. Finally, we use planet flux measurements to show that the absolute calibrations of the WMAP and
Planck experiments are consistent at the half percent level.

▼ This thesis makes two contributions to the solar literature. The first is the development and application of a formal statistical framework for describing short-term (daily) variation in the level of magnetic activity on the Sun. Modelling changes on this time-scale is important because rapid developments of magnetic structures on the sun have important consequences for the space weather experienced on Earth (Committee On The Societal & Economic Impacts Of Severe Space Weather Events, 2008). The second concerns how energetic particles released from the Sun travel through the solar wind. The contribution from this thesis is to resolve a mathematical discrepancy in theoretical models for the transport of charged particles.

Planck is an ESA spacecraft launched in 2009, its mission goal was to map with an exquisite precision the first light of Universe, to help understanding how it has formed. This ambitious objective requires a very high level of control on the instrumental effects. During the mission, it has been found that the component responsible of the digitization of scientific data introduced an unexpectedly high bias effect, preventing full exploitation of data from the Planck/HFI instrument. The present work relates how this bias effect was understood and successfully corrected for. A very deep analysis of the spacecraft detectors, the cryogenic chain, and the digitization component has been performed, which required a specific methodology to gather data from the spacecraft before the end of the mission and its decommissioning.

In the pespective of a modification of the Système international of units (SI) based on value of fondamental constants of physics, the Laboratoire national de métrologie et d'essais (LNE) has developped a watt balance experiment, in order to contribute to the redefinition of the unit of mass: the kilogramm. Indeed, this unit is the last one of the base units of the SI which is based on a material artefact: the international prototype of kilogram.A circular coil, immersed in a horizontal and radial magnetic flux is the centre of the watt balance device. Flown by a current (static phase), it exerts on it a nominaly vertical Laplace force which is compared to the weight of a standard mass. Moved nominally vertically (dynamic phase), it appears at its terminals a voltage. It results from the combination of these two steps an equality of virtual electric and mechanical powers. The determination of electrical…
