▼ A common phenomenon is that larger cities have different place identities; therefore, this thesis is based on the case of Malmö since it is Sweden's third largest city. The purpose was to explore how Malmö’s place image coheres to its place identity, and how the duality of Malmö influences the place image. The research was based on a qualitative case study with an abductive approach since the purpose was explorative. Furthermore, the developed conceptual framework of this thesis was based on previous research regarding place branding, more specifically, place image and place identity. The empirical material in this thesis was collected through a comprehensive user-generated content analysis of Instagram posts as well as through two semis-structured focus groups with people living outside of Malmö. Findings revealed that the place image and place identity cohered in some aspects, while in other aspects the place image differs from the place identity. Furthermore, the findings revealed a complex duality within the city; thus, the place identity of Malmö sends out dual messages which influenced the place image that strengthened the duality of Malmö. The findings of this thesis have contributed with insights to the field of place branding since the concept of place image has not been related to dualities within cities in previous research.The limitations of this thesis were that the participants in the focus groups were from the same university which might have influenced their perception. Another limitation was that only people aged 35 or younger participated. Due to Covid-19, it was hard to find people older than 35 to the focus groups and the result could receive a broader perspective if the participants were older. These limitations could be considered in future research to receive the place image of a broader age range. Furthermore, future research could consider complementing the method of this thesis with focus groups to expose both the positive and negative side of Malmö.

▼ Places, like corporations, have an identity and image, identity being more of an internal construct of place, and image being projected and developed externally. This research argues that identity is a pluralistic construct, meaning that corporations, and indeed places, have multiple identities. Language plays a functional role in construction of place identity, as identities are expressed through communication. Although place identity has been studied across disciplines, it has been given limited attention in place management and place marketing. As such, there are inadequate methodological guidelines for revealing a place‟s identities and none of which focus on the importance of language. This thesis argues that place managers should be aware of the multiple identities that exist. This knowledge allows managers to be aware of alignment, gaps and even conflicts between the stated brand identity and the population of identities. The premise of multiple identities existing within an organisation is argued by Identification Theory and Social Semiotics, both of which are used to guide this study. This research uses a case study methodology, whereby a single-case study of the City of Wollongong, Australia, was selected. In light of the communicative nature of place identity, data was collected from a purposeful sample of residents by way of semi-structured interviews. Considering the functional role of language in identity formation, analysis of the transcripts was guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics. Reference theory and system networks were used to reveal and model the identities of Wollongong. The findings reveal a range of identities, some being complementary, while others not so. The results prove the usefulness of the methodology when revealing a place‟s identities and provides a foundation for analysis of gaps or misalignment‟s between the population of identities and a proposed brand identity. As well as developing a novel methodology to reveal the identities of a place, the findings are of value to place managers as they provide the opportunity to better understand and implement place marketing strategies.

▼ This thesis recognises the need to understand and manage the complex network of perceptions between internal and external place stakeholders. These perceptions are termed identity and image, and are central to the development of effective brand strategy. Generally, identity is how we see ourselves, while image is how others see us. These concepts have relevance to individuals, organisations and places, with the concept of place identity being the focus of this thesis. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this thesis combines marketing, social-semiotics and urban planning literature to characterise place identity. Pivotal to this thesis, is the argument that place managers should examine identities as the starting point of developing a brand strategy. Despite the characteristics of place identity being acknowledged, existing approaches to reveal identities do not holistically address all characteristics. Typically, studies take a static snapshot to reveal an identity or identity set, but do not consider the communicative, fluid and multi-sensory character of place identity. This thesis addresses such shortcomings and answers the question, How to research place identities? Guided by communication theory, a Systemic Functional Participative Multi-modal Framework (SFPMF) is designed and validated in this thesis. The SFPMF facilitates reflexive and participative process consisting of three phases, orientation, narration, and reflection. With the aim of enabling participants as co-researchers, they assist in collection and analysis of spatial, audio and video data. Due to the relevance of communication, systemic functional linguistics techniques were used to analyse the data, including appraisal, reference, transitivity, and speech function analytics. Using a design-apply-learn process, the methodology was developed with residents from Wollongong, a regional Australian city. Once no more changes were required, the final version of the SFPMF was tested again with residents of Wollongong, demonstrating its ability to holistically operationalise place identity. Uniquely, this framework enables a participative inquiry and offers tools to confirm such. The value of this method to authentically include residents in place management strategies is also addressed. The thesis concludes with a discussion of these contributions, as well as suggests opportunities to further develop the SFPMF methodology within place branding, and its potential in other domains.

▼ This thesis is dedicated to studying the current processes of the Kaliningrad Region's identity transformation by examining debates over restoration of Kaliningrad's historical name, Königsberg in regional media. The aim of the study is to find out how does the regional media contribute to the renaming debate, and how is the regional identity transformed within the discussion in the media. The material for the analysis is a collection of 24 articles from 5 regional media sources published in January-April 2013. Articles are examined using Fairclough's three-dimensional concept of analysis of media texts. This work provides an introduction into the socio-cultural background of the topic. It thoroughly investigates how text producers use genre of "letters to the editor" to influence their audiences in a certain way. It discovers the political dimension of the renaming debate by looking at standpoints of various political actors and their representations in the media texts. It defines central topics within the renaming discussion and examines argumentation of renaming supporters and their opponents. It identifies discourses influencing the process of transformation of the Kaliningrad Region's identity. The study has shown that some of regional media outlets prefer to keep the status quo, while others are interested in the further development of the renaming debate. The latter are trying to introduce new topics and fresh opinions to their audience. The analysis of argumentation has shown that some arguments have already lost their persuasive power since the beginning of the discussion in 1991, while new arguments are entering the scene. The most influential discourse is the discourse of Europeanness, which central idea is to become as close to the EU as it is possible, without being separated from Russia. It shows how the Kaliningrad Region attempts to utilize its position in-between the EU and Russia. Conducted study has demonstrated significance of borderlands as political actors in international relations and importance of analyzing political dynamics related to margins along with state-state dynamics.

This degree project is focusing upon the use and relevancy of the phenomenon of ‘a sense of place’ within Swedish municipal spatial and strategic planning practice. The aim is to investigate if, when and how Swedish municipalities are working with the phenomenon of ’a sense of place’, which includes investigating possible motives and problems towards working with this. Furthermore the aim is also to investigate different theoretical, as well as empirical, understandings of the concept as ‘a sense of place’ is a highly ambiguous concept.Various theoretical understandings and definitions of the concept are acknowledged within the study, however a broader definition is primary used within the empirical investigation, whereas ‘a sense of place’ should be understood as: the particular qualities and atmosphere that makes a place unique, this is embedded within peoples understanding about place, which is affected by the physical environment, human activities and social relations.The empirical investigation is primary based upon qualitative interviews with public officials in seven Swedish municipalities. The study concludes in that ‘a sense of place’ as defined within the study, is highly relevant and present in Swedish municipal planning practice. Furthermore the study concludes in that there are possibilities to gain both economic and social benefits from incorporating a‘a sense of place’ perspective to planning, arguing for a relationship between social sustainability and ‘a sense of place’.

Denna studie undersöker fenomenet ‘a sense of place’ relevans samt aktualitet inom svensk kommunal planeringsverksamhet. Syftet med studien är att undersöka om, när och hur svenska kommuner arbetar med fenomenet ’a sense of place’ med fokus på planeringsprocessen. Vidare är syftet med studien även att verka teoretiskt samt empiriskt begreppsutredande kring ’a sense of place’ samt angränsande begrepp, då det är högst mångtydiga koncept.Studien diskuterar och reflekterar över flertalet tolkningar och definitioner av begreppet ’a sense of place’. För att konkretisera och underlätta den empiriska undersökningen appliceras en bredare definition av begreppet som: ’a sense of place´ är de specifika egenskaperna och atmosfären som gör en plats unik, vilket är inneboende i människors upplevelse av plats, vilket i sin tur påverkas av platsens fysiska karaktär, mänsklig aktivitet samt sociala relationer.Studiens empiriska undersökning är främst baserad på en kvalitativ intervjustudie med tjänstemän från sju svenska kommuner. Det empiriska materiaet kompletteras även av kommunala handlingar samt tre kvalitativa intervjuer med kommunstyrelseordföranden. Studiens slutsatser är att ’a sense of place’ som definierat inom studien, är ett högst relevant och aktuellt ämne inom den svenska kommunala planeringsverksamheten. ▼ The present study is devoted to the exploration of place presentations and online representations of immersive place-based experiences by teenagers on Instagram. This study is curious to understand if students' from an international travel program, Rustic Pathways, presentations of place online are different or similar than descriptions of place experience offline and if these representations differ, why? The humanistic geography concept of 'place' and place attachment theory was used as a guiding framework for this study. This study employed a mixed methods approach, completing fifteen interviews with former Rustic Pathways students and textual analysis of ninety Instagram posts. The analysis applied multiple lenses of interpretation through a hermeneutic perspective as well as a critical textual analysis to understand both the constructed realities of place experience and to addresses the structures at work beyond individuals' actions within texts. After an extensive investigation into the phenomenon of place experience and place presentations on Instagram of Rustic Pathways participants on Instagram, I illustrate the place experience reflections as communicated by Rustic Pathways interview subjects. I also explore the interview subjects' descriptions of how their identity, values, and behaviors were influenced by place. I next explore the intersection of place and identity as observed on the Instagram platform. I examine how the data introduces conflicts in the communication of identity and experience as impacted by curated and invisible narratives, the discursive expectations of Rustic Pathways on the interview subjects and user's presentation of experience, as well as the influences of performativity on online representations of wild and exotic places. Finally, I explore the digital negotiations of place experience by examining the complexities of communicating offline experiences in an online space through identity performances. ▼ The need to plan for climate change is an emerging reality for Canadian communities. Impacts like flooding or changes in the formation of sea ice have already contributed to significant financial and social disruptions in many cities, towns, and regions. In response, a growing number of municipalities have adopted climate change adaptation plans that lay out a pathway to prepare for such events. It is typical for such planning efforts to recognize that local economies, elements of the built environment, and the ecosystems that support them are vulnerable to climate change impacts. However, these plans often fail to examine how intangible socio-psychological dimensions of community life might condition these vulnerabilities. They also typically do not ask whether experiential aspects of community life like local values or identity might also be vulnerable, or explore the potential consequences of their disruption. Accordingly, this thesis argues that there may be a blind spot in dominant approaches to adaptation planning that is exposing communities to unforeseen risks. It also questions whether current planning efforts will be sufficient to buffer against disruptions to the many foundations of community life that are not captured in the rational calculus of climate change adaptation practice. Churchill, Manitoba is examined as a case study of the potential for a place-based approach to climate change adaptation planning. When conceptualized as a bond between a person and a particular landscape, the place perspective offers a vehicle for incorporating local values and identity into adaptation planning processes. Place provides a language that is familiar to the planning profession, and that is also conducive to community engagement. That said, results from a community survey (n= 51) demonstrate that inaction in the face of acknowledged climate change impacts can persist even in the presence of strong place connections. When place is considered more broadly through the lens of mobility, a potential explanation for this finding emerges. Results of a structural equation model show that visitors’ (n= 306) place identity and sense of nature relatedness shape the desire to consume vulnerable landscapes (i.e., a last chance tourism motivation). At the same time, in-depth community interviews (n= 24) conducted as part of grounded theory show that manifestations of power and mobility influence the place bonding process and condition the belief that an active citizenry has no legitimate role in shaping a community’s climate future. This thesis illustrates how processes that financially exploit a community’s place identity can condition community vulnerability and constrain options for community adaptation planning. It also challenges the dominant notion that the primary benefit of the place perspective is encouraging individual behavioural change through place protective action. This thesis is an exploration of the cultural characteristics and urban identity of residential neighbourhoods of Shillong, a hilltown settlement in the north east region of India. The rapid pace of unplanned urbanization trends in the hill stations of India has resulted in the degradation of the quality of public space networks of hill stations which are of primary importance to the structure and quality of the urban environment. The present scenario of development in hill stations have resulted in extreme pressures in the built environment such as problems related to congestion, overcrowding, pollution and inadequate infrastructure which has resulted in a change in their morphology. Urban identity is a concept which entails a certain quality of life for the urban residents and can be used as a tool for maintaining quality of life in the face of rapid urbanization. Form, activity and meanings are the aspects which contribute to sense of place and it is these aspects which contribute to identity of a place. Due to change in building typology from the low-rise bungalow typology to the midrise apartment buildings which now graze the skyline of the neighbourhood this shift has seen a neglect in the urban infrastructure (movement networks) which provide accessibility as well as behave as a public realm. This neglect has been noticed in the rise of unsafe neighbourhood streets. This thesis aims to identify aspects of the urban environment, both tangible(physical) and intangible (mental and social), which contributes to the making of urban identity. It aims to provide a strategy, based on the qualities of urban identity, for one of the oldest townships of Shillong city which had seen a gradual decline in the quality of the network of public space structure which exists in the neighbourhood in order to bring back life to the network of public spaces in order to make them safe and also provide a better living environment for the residents. Drawing on such understandings the aim is to create a design strategy which aims at recreating these informal pedestrian streets as the social and public realm of the city.

▼ This anthropological, ethnographic study investigates the mobility patterns of Maritimers within Canada, with a focus on political economy. Specifically, I have analyzed the links between mobility, livelihood and identity within Miramichi, New Brunswick, as indicative of broader mobility patterns. This analysis is based on ethnographic data gathered over the course of two sessions of fieldwork in Miramichi itself, phone interviews with people who had moved away from the area, and extensive research of the historical regional political economy. I argue the historical and global context of the political economy and predominance of natural resource-based industries in the area are intricately related to mobility decisions. These contexts have also influenced understandings as to what work is available in the area and what is considered to be “good” work. Local understandings of livelihood are intricately linked to mobility decisions, which take many different and complex forms. I formulate a typology of the various mobility patterns which emerged from the data collected. Out-migration takes place largely for two reasons: for education and for work. Commuter migrants leave the community for work purposes, at varying distances, but maintain their household or home in Miramichi. In-migration takes place with the two main categories: retirees, many of whom lived in Miramichi during their youth and have “come back”; and educated people in-migrating for employment. This work also contributes to the greater understanding of the potential role communal ties, attachment to place and sentiments contribute to mobility decision-making. My analysis of social sentiments surrounding mobility in relation to notions of community, drawing on the concept of structures of feeling, lead to the formulation of the concept of nostalgic resilience. The nostalgic remembrances of the community past can lead to collective ideas that it was resilient and thus would persist, and even thrive, in the future. In arguing the Miramichi area has ongoing patterns and understandings of mobility, though, I am careful to note that there are negative lived realities in connection with these patterns. Nor are the nostalgic notions of community resilience without negative aspects.
