▼ High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are new and promising classes of metallic alloys for structural applications. HEA development is challenging, due to the vast compositional space that exists for these multicomponent alloys. As such, predictive modelling is paramount for the development of HEAs, so alloy design does not need to rely on time-consuming, expensive trial-and-error experimentation. Although solid solution strengthening is the main strengthening mechanism of HEAs, the fundamentals behind this mechanism are not fully understood in this context, and further consideration with respect to modeling is warranted. In this work, the solid solution strengthening mechanism of Face Centered Cubic (FCC) and Body Centered Cubic (BCC) HEAs is investigated experimentally, and the results are interpreted using a combination of different strengthening models available from the literature. Here we show the
mechanical behavior of HEAs is comparable to conventional alloys. Similar temperaturedependent yield stress regimes are observed in comparison to conventional BCC alloys, and solid solution strengthening via the contribution of atomic size and elastic modulus mismatch is found to be the main strengthening mechanism. Strength models are used in high-throughput alloy design by combining solid solution strengthening and thermodynamic predictions to find strong, single-phase (e.g. FCC) HEA compositions in the multicomponent space. In addition, a high-throughput experimental methodology for characterizing a large number of HEA compositions is developed. This work contributes to fundamental understanding of solid solution strengthening and phase stability of HEAs, toward the design of promising compositions by prediction that exhibit tailored
properties.

▼ Hempcrete is a particularly promising lightweight, porous, and breathable biocomposite material that has the potential to significantly reduce the embodied energy related to the construction of buildings while improving their indoor air quality. However, hempcrete’s
properties and performance depend on various parameters such as ingredient amounts, binder type, hurd characteristics (e.g., particle size and porosity), and the amount of water. Therefore, there is a great need for research that will focus on the development and production of hempcrete mixes and materials using local, Canadian resources. This research study characterizes the
physical, microstructural, and
mechanical properties of nine hempcrete mixes developed using lime and eco-friendly pozzolans such as metakaolin, crushed brick, and natural hydraulic lime in varying relative proportions. Furthermore, it compares three different types of hempcrete walls against the conventionally insulated walls of a single-story house located in Winnipeg, using S-Timber 2019 software. The microstructure analysis of hurd particles showed their porous nature. The dry densities of all design mix range from 294.59 kg/m3 to 399.68 kg/m3, with the majority (⁓73%) falling between 320 kg/m3 and 370 kg/m3. The average compression strength of the developed samples ranged between 0.11 MPa and 0.51 MPa, whereas the average splitting tensile strength ranged between 0.010 MPa and 0.0348 MPa. The results show a positive correlation between the hempcrete’s
mechanical properties and density, mainly, in the case of compressive strength. The microstructure analysis of all the design mixes exhibit adequate adhesion at the interface, and present high carbonation with some hydrates. The main findings suggest that locally sourced metakaolin and crushed brick are excellent alternatives to the expensive, imported hydraulic lime. The modeling analysis indicates an increase in the dead loads and foundation sizes due to hempcrete infill compared to the base case. The results also indicate that the best option for a house considering the increase in dead loads and foundation sizes, is a wall case that meets the energy code through the thinner wall composed of 100 mm of mineral wool and 140 mm of hempcrete.

▼ The aim of this study is to assess properties of lesser used/known timbers from Mozambique. The studied species were ncurri (Icuria dunensis Wieringa), ntholo (Pseudolachnostylis maprounaefolia Pax), metil (Sterculia appendiculata K. Schum), namuno (Acacia nigrescens Oliv.) and muanga (Pericopsis angolensis Meeuwen).
A comprehensive literature review found the Mozambique timber sector to be dominated by very few hardwood species while the rest of 118 lesser used wood species are almost unexplored. The above mentioned lesser used timbers were selected and subjected to descriptive and comparative analyses aiming at describing the physical-mechanical properties and natural durability with regard to prospective end uses.
Standard test methods determined density, moisture content, dimensional stability characteristics, colour, natural durability and a number of mechanical properties of the selected lesser used timbers. The study revealed that ntholo and ncurri are heavy timbers with a density in the range of 850-1100 kg/m3 and very low dimensional changes. Metil is a medium light wood with an average density of 550 kg/m3 at 12% moisture content and a coefficient of anisotropy of 1.8 from green to oven-dry state. End use assessments suggest that the timbers of ntholo, muanga and namuno can be used in similar applications as the well known timbers, e.g. internal joineries, tool handles and furniture. Metil timber seems suitable for packaging boxes, plywood and construction purposes. In terms of natural durability, the results showed that heartwood of namuno, muanga and ntholo can be classified as very durable to deterioration and degradation caused by fungi and termites. These timbers showed good performance when untreated samples were exposed in- and above ground field tests providing a good indication of the expected service life and outdoor use features. Wood of metil was classified as non durable to any of the considered hazards and is not recommended for exterior uses unless treated with appropriate wood preservatives.
The study determined ntholo timber mechanical properties and examined interrelationships with density and anatomical features of ntholo through regression and correlation analyses. The study found ntholo to be a very dense timber with high mechanical strength in comparison to well known timbers. The regression analyses show that both ntholo sapwood and heartwood densities are poor predictors for the tested mechanical properties, although may provide some indication of tested properties.
All tested properties of ntholo sapwood were influenced mainly by ground tissue proportions, while heartwood properties were described by more leveled anatomical predictors. Fiber length was the only anatomical feature significantly correlated to density and all tested mechanical properties of ntholo. The number of vessels/mm2 and % vessels were not significantly correlated to any of the measured properties but appeared to be key anatomical features for predictions under regression analysis.

▼ The aim of this work was to evaluate and model the water absorption process of corn grain submitted to soaking process at different levels of
mechanical damage at different temperatures, as well to determinate and model its
mechanical behavior during the process. Behavior of some
physical properties was investigated in function of moisture content. Corn grain of AG 1510 variety were utilized, with initial moisture content of 0.142 (decimal d.b.) obtained at a small producer from Viçosa (MG) city area. Different
mechanical damage levels were induced at grains, correlating with electrical conductivity. At soaking process, solution of 0.2 % of sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and 0.55 % of lactic acid (C3H6O3) in distilled water were used, referring to wet milling conventional process of corn grain, at temperatures of (40, 50, 60 and 70) C and
mechanical damage levels analyzed indirectly through electrical conductivity of (2.847, 14.077, 22.261, 29.194 and 32.971) μS cm-1 g-1. Soaking process modeling was performed by Pelegs model. Effective diffusivity coefficient to hydration process of corn grain was obtained through observed data adjustment of liquid diffusivity model based on Ficks second law, and its relationship with temperature was described by Arrhenius equation. Bulk and real densities, porosity, circularity, sphericity and volumetric expansion were evaluated to corn grain without induced
mechanical damage (witness) in function of moisture content.
Mechanical properties were also determined: force to a specific deformation of 0.001 m, proportional deformity modulus, deformation energy and resilient modulus, evaluating the force-deformation curve, to different moisture content and
physical damage levels. Was concluded, according to obtained results: (a) structural alterations caused by induced
mechanical damage at corn grain altered product water absorption rates; (b) Pelegs model adequately adjusted to observed data to entire conditions utilized; (c) effective diffusivity coefficients values increased with temperature and damage level increase, presenting magnitudes between (2.403 × 10-10 and 19.220 × 10-10) m2 s-1; (d) activation energy referred to water diffusivity of corn grain varied from (14.533 to 28.366) kJ mol-1, being that higher values is correlated to higher product
physical integrity; (e) porosity increased linearly until achieve a certain level, and its behavior was described by a bi-segmented model. Bulk and real densities varied by a quadratic relation, where by values decreased until attain a minimal value, increasing afterwards. Circularity and sphericity of corn grain didnt varied with moisture content; (f) Unit volumetric expansion was best represented by Rahmans model. None of the conventional models used to predict volumetric variation of agricultural products adjusted satisfactorily to apparent volumetric expansion observed data of corn grain, therefore a new model was proposed; (g) The
mechanical properties evaluated decreased significantly only with regard to moisture content variation.…

▼ Successful continuous or semi-continuous profile forming of wood-strand composites requires development of the underpinning science, including a suitable binding system, forming defect management, and process-property relationships. A hybrid resin to stabilize the wood-strand preforms for subsequent profile forming and curing was devised using a mixture of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resins. This study examined the influence of PVAc on the cure kinetics of PF with differential scanning calorimetry. Results show that the cure kinetics of PF blended with PVAc does not differ significantly from neat PF resin for blend ratios of 1 or lower. The nth-order Borchardt Daniels model provided good prediction for the curing of adhesive system with a PVAc/PF ratio lower than 1 and neat PF resin. This blended resin system can potentially be used for continuous or semi-continuous profile forming of wood-strand composites. To gain an initial understanding, the complex state of deformations in wood-strand preforms during profiling forming was studied using single-curvature bending. Three failure types were identified based on the primary failure mechanisms in bending, buckling and shear slip. The initial failure in bending was predicted with a strength-based model with the goal of minimizing defects, such as buckling. A relationship between preform conditions, forming defects and thickness recovery was established.Profile-formed wood-strand composites showed much better shape conformance than profiled veneer-based composites. Slow closing rate and relatively high moisture content caused flat and peak-at-core vertical density profiles (VDP). Lower moisture content resulted in more uniform VDP.The internal stress state in the bend of the profile-formed V-specimens was determined with elastic curved beam theory. Delamination, dominated by radial stress, was the initial failure mode. The Chang-Springer failure criterion was used to determine the initiation of delamination failure within the bend of the V-specimens on roller support. V-specimens tested on pin support yielded greater bending strength than those on roller support. These support conditions provide lower and upper bounds for stresses in the bend of the specimen for some applications. This study adds to the limited knowledge base of profile forming of wood-strand composites and provides an insight into process-property relationships.

▼ Prerada drveta - Primarna prerada drveta / Wood
processing -Primary wood processing
efekat.
stabilnost dobijenih ploĉa imali uticaj i termiĉki tretmani i
u slojevima lepka. Ovaj pad smicajne ĉvrstoće najverovatnije je
posledica slabljenja kvaliteta lepljene veze pod dejstvom
predtretmana.

Using ligno-celullose polymers combined with artificial polymers in form of composite material is result of a developing research line which had as initial objective the use of the firsts as just filling material in an agglutinant thermoplastic matrix. Due to the necessity of reusing industrial processing residues, the research and utilization of fiber and woody particles had grown in importance and started to contribute on the development of new techniques, processes, equipment and materials that make possible creating a huge variety of products and applications.

This study aimed to make a comparative analysis and to determine the physical properties of wood and its charcoal along the radial and longitudinal directions of the wood of ten clones of Eucalyptus and Corymbia, of high productivity. Therefore, disks of different heights of the trunk were collected from tree species in the town of Capelinha, State of Minas Gerais - Brazil, obtaining test samples according to specific standard for determining the density, linear shrinkage and volumetric coefficient of anisotropy and initial moisture. Following, the samples were charred, aimed at determining the bulk density, volumetric and linear degradation, gravimetric yield and mechanical strength. For the evaluation of the experiment a variance analysis in a completely randomized statistical design and the principal component analysis (PCA) on comparative evaluation of the physical properties of wood was used. Multivariate dissimilarity (canonical relations) in the comparative evaluation of the physical properties of wood and charcoal was used as well. As a result, there was a high heterogeneity between the studied species, which were divided into four…

Building construction is one of the sectors that most consuming natural resources and use energy intensively, generating considerable environmental impacts coupled with large amount of waste. Employing alternative product like wood panels comes as a possibility to reduce these impacts. Oriented Strand Board, developed to substitute the plywood panel, has gained more space in the construction spite of its lower dimensional stability against its predecessor. The addition of plastic waste in constitutive matrix of these panels represents an alternative to reuse this kind of waste and wood economy in the productive process of these composites, besides improving their physical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility of producing OSB of Pinus sp. wood with the addition of various proportions of particles of bioriented polypropylene in its constitutive matrix and polyurethane resin based on castor oil with evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of these panels. In accordance with EN 300 (1999), the OSB panels have been classified as 4 in accordance with the physical properties assessed and as OSB 1 for the elasticity modules and rupture. ▼ Over the past decades, a dramatic increment on the production of maize husk (MH) in Mexico has been observed. The SDA framework was developed from a designer point of view to confront the concerns of MH overproduction, including social, environmental, technical and economic implications. The investigated fibres were obtained from two harvesting methods: manual (MASH) and mechanical (ASPROS). Both MHF's performance was lower than other natural fibres. ASPROS fibres showed a steadier mechanical performance with a cross-section area of 0.14 mm², an ultimate tensile strength of 45.75 MPa, a 7.65 % of elongation and Young's modulus of 1.95 MPa. Nineteen different MHC blends were manufactured, at a concentration of 70/30 MH/binder. Four MH sizes with three binding systems were tested; the sizes were (1) whole husk, (2) chopped, (3) milled and (4) 10 % NaOH alkalinised fibres. The binding systems included: (A) a board made rearranging MH's natural components through thermal fusion, (B) MH mixed with lignin for the production of non-resin MHC boards, and (C) MH blended with a super SAP® CPM epoxy resin (SSE). The sizereduction (milled and alkali) improved MHF' surface interfacial bonding with SSE resin, however, only alkali treated presented enhanced tensile properties. Overall, the M30 boards met the properties of general purpose fibreboards for use under humid conditions (BS EN622-5:2009). The AK30 and M20 boards properties remained within the general-purpose fibreboards for use in dry conditions (BS EN622-5:2009).

Nanocomposites are interestingly growing since their development in the 1990s by Toyota Company. Therefore, improving the properties of such materials is a major issue from fundamental and industrial point of view. This improvement can pass through a relevant choice of reinforcing loads added to the matrix particularly regarding the type, geometry, the proportion, and the treatment of these fillers. The processing parameters of the mixture play also a key role. The objective of this work is to contribute to the identification and understanding of the mechanisms at the origin of the reinforcing thermoplastic matrices by nanofillers. This aspect presented through the study of the thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites formed by a polyamide 12 matrix (PA12) filled with organically modified clay nanoparticles. More specifically, we analysed the effects of the filler mass fraction and environmental aging on structural, thermal and mechanical properties of these nanocomposites. The mixing conditions on these properties were also examined. A particular attention has been paid to the study of relationships between the macroscopic properties and the structure of nanocomposites. Viscoelastic properties of these materials in both melt and solid states were compared, which represents one of the originalities of this work.

▼ Utilization of forest wood raw materials for particle board production has resulted in
deforestation, loss of habitat for millions of species, climate change and raw material
competition. Therefore, the use of non woody ligno-cellulosic raw materials is a good choice for
particle board production. In this study aloe and sisal stem fibers were used as a blend and
mixed with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin for particle board production. First the aloe and sisal
stems were collected form Adigrat and sun dried. The dried stems were then crushed into 3mm to
6mm in size. The particles were further reduced in size by grinding (0.5-2.5mm) and classified
into different classes, i.e. very fine (250µm-475µm for both aloe and sisal fibers), fine (0.5-1.4
mm for aloe and 0.71-1.4mm for sisal fibers) and coarse (1.4-2.0 mm for aloe and 1.4-2.5 mm
for sisal fibers), based on the requirement for production and analysis and stored on different
containers until needed. The fibers were then analyzed for their moisture, ash, extractive,
hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose content. FTIR analysis was also performed for identification
of the functional groups present in the aloe and sisal stem fibers. After analysis of raw materials,
three layered particleboards were produced using 22cm by 22 cm mould using coarse particles
(60%) as core layers and fine particles (40%) as surface layers. Design expert 11 software was
used for design of the experiments and statistical analysis of the results.17 different boards were
produced by varying the aloe to sisal ratio (30-60%), resin loading rate (10-15%) and pressing
pressure(150-200 bar) at pressing temperature of 155
C and press time of 14 minutes. The
physical (moisture content, water absorption and thickness swelling) and
mechanical (Modulus
of rupture (MOR), Modulus of elasticity (MOE) and Internal bond (IB))
properties of the boards
were investigated and compared with the Ethiopian standards for particle board. The results of
the
mechanical properties test showed that the particles boards have an average values of
11.267 MPa MOR,1686.34 MPa MOE and 0.417 MPa IB. The analysis of
physical properties
also showed that the particle boards have average values of 76.95% water absorption and 62%
thickness swelling after 2 and 24hrs of immersion in water bath. The maximum results for MOR,
MOE and IB were 12.42MPa, 1830.13MPa and 0.505Mpa, respectively. These values were
observed at 45% of aloe to sisal ratio, 12.5% of resin loading and 175 bar pressing pressure.
The minimum values for WA and TS were 47.15% and 61.9% ,respectively. These values were
observed at 45% of aloe to sisal ratio, 15 % of resin loading and 200 bar pressing pressure. The
final results of
mechanical properties were compared with the Ethiopian standards for particle
boards and they were found satisfactory for general purpose use.

The main objectives were: To understand the mechanism of sound production in musical instruments and the effects of the material(s) employed on the sound generated; To build upon previous research regarding selection of the tested physical/mechanical properties and acoustic properties of cementitious materials; To draw conclusions regarding the effect of different constituents, mix designs and material properties upon the acoustic properties of the material; To build a model of the relationship between the acoustic properties of a cementitious material and its mix design via its physical/mechanical properties. In order to meet the aim, this research was conducted by employing the semi-experimental (half analytical) method: two experimental programmes were performed (I and II); a mathematical optimization technique (least square method) was then implemented in order to construct an optimized mathematical model to match with the experimental data. In Experimental Programme I, six constituents/factors were investigated regarding the effect on the physical/mechanical and acoustic properties: cementitious material additives (fly ash, silica fume, and GGBS), superplasticizer, and basic mix design parameters (w/c ratio, and sand grading). 11 properties (eight physical/mechanical properties: compressive strength, density, hardness, flexural strength, flexural modulus, elastic modulus, dynamic modulus and slump test; and three acoustic properties: resonant frequency, speed of sound and quality factor (internal damping)) were tested for each constituents/factors related mortar type. For each type of mortar, there were three cubes, three prisms and three cylinders produced. In Experimental Programme I, 20 mix designs were investigated, 180 specimens produced, and 660 test results recorded. After analysing the results of Experimental Programme I, fly ash (FA), w/b ratio and b/s ratio were selected as the cementitious material/factors which had the greatest influence on the acoustic properties of the material; these were subsequently investigated in detail in Experimental Programme II. In Experimental Programme II, various combinations of FA replacement level, w/b ratios and b/s ratios (three factors) resulted in 1122 test results. The relationship between these three factors on the selected 11 properties was then determined. Through using regression analysis and optimization technique (least square method), the relationship between the physical/mechanical properties and acoustic properties was then determined. Through both experimental programmes, 54 mix designs were investigated in total, with 486 specimens produced and tested, and 1782 test results recorded. Finally, based upon well-known existing…

▼ In this thesis a study of outstanding properties of epitaxial graphene on SiC were carried out involving Raman spectroscopy, AFM, UFM, XPS, Photoelectric effect and electrical resistivity. Epitaxial graphene was grown from a semi-insulating on-axis 6H (000-1) or 4H-SiC (000-1) substrate. Epitaxial growth is based on Si atoms sublimation from the SiC substrate bulk. We used the basics of epitaxial graphene growth; however small details were changed. This allowed the growth of various layers, new features and new properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS was used to identify the different components forming within the graphene substrate system. The graphene layer number is evidenced by XPS. Atoms percentages in the grown graphene layer were determined. Furthermore, the oxidation of the graphene layers was clearly distinguished. Atomic force microscopy AFM was carried out to study the topography response of the graphene sample. This distinguishes any morphological changes of the graphene layer. The size, orientation and regularity of the layers terraces were determined. For the first time, new features such as: island, bubbles and domes of graphene layers were identified. The nature of these features was determined using ultra force microscopy UFM . High-resolution micro-Raman (Jobin Yvon HR LabRAM) was employed to illustrate all the revealed properties. Nonetheless, it illustrates the doping, defects, disorder, number of layers and phonon-plasmon coupling of epitaxial graphene. These properties were carefully demonstrated based on local Raman mapping. The findings of these investigations indicate the formation of various types of epitaxial graphene layers. These latest could have various forms with new electrical properties. This was illustrated using a comparative study to mechanical properties of epitaxial graphene island. In fact, new charge distribution was found across these features. These findings also differs from other electrical properties found in flat graphene layers. These latest shows electroneutrality of charge distribution between graphene SiC substrate. Here, Phonons- plasmons coupling in epitaxial graphene SiC substrate system were illustrated. On other hand, epitaxial graphene properties were not limited to the graphene layers flatness. In fact, new photoresponse of epitaxial graphene under violet light was revealed. Here, photo resistance increase during to epitaxial graphene morphology.

▼ Human embryonic stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (hESC-CMs) can be potential used to in a stem cell-based regenerative therapy to cure heart related disease. The maturity of HESC-CMs still remains fetal-type even though many differentiation protocols have been discovered. In the first part of the thesis, I will focus on electrical physiological characterization of the maturation process of a confluent layer of hESC-CMs. With the high throughput of monitoring microelectrode array (MEA) system, we observed the development of hESC-CMs over weeks and analyze the electrophysiological features during maturation in great detail. In the second part of the thesis, we further investigate the external factors that can affect maturation process of stem cell derived cardiomyocytes in vitro such as electrical stimulation. In the third part of the thesis, the mechanical properties of cancer cells are explored. We discussed the role of mechanical factor in cancer cells. This could add a new dimensional approach in characterize and enhance the maturation of hESC-CMs in future research. In the fourth part of the thesis, we present nanoscale characterization of action and actin binding proteins using Atomic Force Mircoscope (AFM).

▼ This study examines the effects of cryogenic temperatures on the
mechanical properties of carbon, aramid, and poly(p-phenylene-2, 6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers. Although the
mechanical properties are documented for these fibers at ambient and elevated temperatures, there is an absence of data in the open literature for how these fibers behave at very low temperatures. To evaluate the
mechanical properties, the ASTM standard method for testing at ambient temperature was used as a baseline. The low temperature tests were conducted inside a double walled cryogenic chamber to evaluate the fiber performance at 100K. Fiber
properties at low temperatures displayed differences from room temperature
properties in the form of increased ultimate tensile strength (UTS), decreased in elongation to failure, and increased Youngs Modulus. The change in
properties due to the effect of temperature was more pronounced in fibers with a higher degree of crystallinity.

U oviru ove doktorske disertacije istražena je
varijabilnost anatomskog i hemijskog sastava u zavisnosti od
starosti i položaja na stablu, i uticaj hemijskih predtretmana na
hemijski sastav juvenilnog (10 godina) i zrelog (72 godine) drveta
poljskog jasena (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. ssp. Pannonica Soó
& Simon) sa područja Morovića. U cilju ispitivanja dejstva
sirćetne kiseline i 0,03 g/g natrijum karbonata. Za anatomsku
karakterizaciju primenjene su svetlosna i elektronska mikroskopija
(SEM). TAPPI i ASTM metodama određen je sadržaj celuloze,
Klasonovog i kiselorastvornog lignina, mineralnih materija i
ekstraktivnih jedinjenja rastvorljivih u vreloj vodi i u smeši
organskih rastvarača (toluol/etanol). Za utvrđivanje sadržaja
glukoze, ksiloze i manoze u uzorcima drveta i ekstraktima iz
spektroskopija (FTIR). Elementarna analiza karakterističnih detalja
uočenih u tkivu poljskog jasena obavljena je primenom SEM-EDS
sistema. Primenom standardnih EN SRPS i DIN, kao i naučnih metoda
svojstva, upijanje vode, zapreminsko bubrenje i toplotnu moć drveta
poljskog jasena. U cilju istraživanja mogućnosti primene tretmanom
modifikovanog drveta izrađene su eksperimentalne jednoslojne ploče
iverice. EN SRPS standardi su primenjeni za ispitivanje fizičkih i
mehaničkih svojstava izrađenih ploča. Ustanovljeno je da postoji
varijabilnost dimenzija elemenata anatomske građe i hemijskog
stablu. Svi tretmani su doveli do promena u hemijskom sastavu
drveta, i to u većoj meri kod juvenilnog drveta. Tretman vodom
izazvao najmanje promene, a tretman natrijum karbonatom najveće. U
smanjen posle ostalih tretmana. Tretman vodom i sirćetnom kiselinom
doveli su do smanjenja, a tretman natrijum karbonatom do povećanja
sadržaja ravnotežne vlage tretiranih uzoraka (90 %, 20 °C). Svi
tretmani doveli su do intenzivnijeg upijanja vode i poboljšanja
dimenzionalne stabilnosti za 14 - 24.6 %. Adhezivna svojstva

▼ Rapidly solidified nanoquasicrystalline Al93Fe3Cr2Ti2 at% alloy has previously shown outstanding mechanical performance and microstructural stability up to elevated temperatures. Despite this, no in-depth study had previously been performed assessing the active strengthening mechanisms, the long term microstructural stability and the effect of plastic deformation at elevated temperature to simulate the production methods utilised for engineering applications. The current project analysed eight bars consisting of a nanoquasicrystalline Al93Fe3Cr2Ti2 at% alloy matrix with varying amounts of pure Al fibres, produced through gas atomisation and warm extrusion. Microstructural characterisation and thermal analysis of the as-atomized powder was carried out to assess whether microstructural changed were likely to occur at the extrusion temperature. A microstructure made primarily of nanometre-sized icosahedral particles in an FCC-Al matrix was observed through a combination of SEM, TEM (and CBDP), EDX, XRD. Thermal analysis of the powders performed by DSC showed that no change was expected to occur at the extrusion temperature. Five bars were extruded during the course of this project: one bar of pure Al-Fe-Cr-Ti alloy, two composite bars with 10 vol% added pure Al and two bars with 20 vol% added Al. Three more bars were received from a previous project and analysed. Warm extrusion caused the powder particles to become well bonded and elongated in the extrusion direction introducing a preferred orientation in the FCC-Al grains. A bimodal distribution of grain size was observed after extrusion. Several low angle (5-15 °) grain boundaries were also identified by EBSD along the extrusion direction. No obvious change in size or shape was observed by TEM in the icosahedral phase (a bimodal distribution of hard, incoherent precipitates was observed after extrusion), or any change in the amount of solutes in solid solution in the Al matrix. Mechanical properties at room temperature were tested by Vickers microhardness, quasi-static tensile tests, dynamic tensile tests and dynamic compression tests. A theoretical model correlating the microstructures observed with the various active strengthening mechanisms was applied in order to predict an estimate of the yield strength of the material produced. It was found that the strength of the Al93Fe3Cr2Ti2 alloy came primarily from a combination of the effect of the hard, incoherent nanoparticles, the small grain size and work hardening. The fibre addition to this alloy caused a linear decrease in mechanical strength with increasing vol% pure Al. This work represents the first quantitative estimate of which strengthening mechanisms are active and how much they influence the mechanical strength of Al93Fe3Cr2Ti2 alloy and composites. An understanding of the yield strength is essential as engineering components…

▼ Interphase phenomenon gains more and more interest throughout the research community. An interphase is formed between a filler particle and a polymeric matrix, and it may constitute almost the entire volume of a nanocomposite. If the interphase have favorable mechanical properties it will thus result in a nanocomposite with such properties. Therefore, understanding the principles of its formation and properties are crucial in order to design advanced nanocomposites. This thesis focuses on PDMS-carboxylic acid modified latex nanoparticles (PDMS-CML) surface composites investigated by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). A new sample preparation method was designed and utilized together with the Gel Trapping Technique (GTT). Quantitative Imaging Mode and Contact Mode were utilized in the AFM studies. Topography and nanomechanical properties were investigated and compared for pure PDMS and PDMS containing the nanoparticles. Further, Contact Mode was used to investigate nanoscale wear of the samples in order to elucidate the interactions strength between the nanoparticles and the matrix.

▼ Oxidative aging is a major issue in asphalt pavements that leads to hardening of the asphalt, which further contributes significantly to asphalt pavement embrittlement and eventually results in excessive pavement cracking. In addition, the performance of asphalt binder is also highly related to its service conditions which involve climatic conditions and traffic conditions, such as temperature, moisture and traffic loads. Generally, the
mechanical properties of asphalt before and after oxidative aging can be tested in the laboratory; however, the fundamental material science of asphalt before and after oxidative aging is difficult to be investigated in the laboratory regarding chemical composition and property change due to the difficulties of studying the molecular structures and their dynamic behavior in asphalt. Therefore, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation method is used in this study to understand how the chemical composition and property changes of asphalt after oxidative aging affect the
physical, thermodynamic, rheological and
mechanical performance of the asphalt, and how the oxidized asphalt acts under different conditions, such as loading, temperature, and moisture, compared to the unoxidized asphalt. MD simulation is a computational method used to simulate the
physical movements of atoms and molecules depending on time and force field chosen under different conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and loading. Asphalt models before and after oxidative aging are developed for MD simulations in this study under different temperatures, loading and moisture contents. Simulation results show that the oxidized functional groups in asphalt molecules increase the strength of intermolecular bonds of asphalt, which further contributes to the hardening of the oxidized asphalt. Specifically, the internal energy changes, especially for higher magnitude of intermolecular and lower kinetic energies, are responsible for the hardening of oxidized asphalt, and the higher potential energies and for oxidized asphalt further proves that oxidation increases the polarity of molecules in asphalt and forms strongly interacting components. The internal property change is consistent with the external
physical and rheological property change after oxidation, which is revealed by the increase of density, bulk modulus and viscosity. Considering the
mechanical property of asphalt using MD simulations, both the unoxidized and oxidized asphalts deform more and fail faster with an increase in both compressive and tensile stress rates, especially under tensile stresses. However, the oxidized asphalt is stiffer than the unoxidized asphalt, which shows slower and less deformation, further validating the hardening of asphalt after oxidation. Asphalt is significantly susceptible to temperature. Simulation results show that density, and zero shear viscosity of asphalt decrease with an increase in temperature. Isothermal compressibility and bulk modulus also change under different temperatures. Moreover, the density, bulk modulus (inverse of…

▼ Thesis M.S. Michigan State University. Forensic Science 2018
This study analyzed femoral and tibial cross-sectional properties in a medieval Nubian skeletal sample to explore patterns of lower limb activity and mobility. The sample of skeletal remains was excavated from two cemeteries on Mis Island—cemetery 3-J-10 (AD 1100 – AD 1400) and cemetery 3-J-11 (AD 300 – AD 1400). Two research questions were investigated within the Mis Island sample. The first set of comparisons were conducted between the two cemetery groups that comprise the sample, to evaluate potential temporal and spatial differences between the communities. Biomechanical data between adult males and females were also compared to infer the degree of sexual division of activity and mobility in this society. The cross-sectional properties between the two cemetery sub-samples were not significantly different, suggesting that both groups of individuals shared similar levels of physical activity concerning the lower limbs during this period. Results of the comparison between male and female groups demonstrated significantly higher measures of diaphyseal robusticity in males compared to females. This finding indicates that male individuals in this society were generally involved in more physically demanding activity concerning the lower limbs. However, results of diaphyseal shape suggest that males and females may have been more similar in their roles regarding logistic mobility. The outcomes from this study indicate a sexual division of activity involving the lower limb, but perhaps a relatively equal level of mobility, that may have been present in this region throughout the medieval period.
