▼ Mobile internet involves the use of a wireless handheld device such as a mobile phone to access the
digitized contents of the internet. The devices remove the space and time limitations from internet
access as they can be used anywhere and anytime. Previous studies have shown that access of internet
via mobile phone technology is popular in many countries across the earth but the technology is still
not widely utilised in some regions.
This research identifies and assesses the factors that influence the usage of a mobile phone to access
internet. It specifically focuses on the service in the Kenyan context. The research model is based on
the basic concepts of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Data was gathered through a survey conducted
in Nairobi. The data was coded in SPSS 16 and Confirmatory Factor Analysis used to analyse the data
while Structural Equation Modelling using Analysis of Moment Structures 16 (AMOS 16) software
was used to validate the research model.
The results indicate that perceived satisfaction or enjoyment, perceived behavioural control, perceived
usability, perceived social influence, perceived facilitating condition, mobility, perceived cost or value
and subjective norms have a positive and significant effect on usage of a mobile phone to access
internet. The result contributes to the body of knowledge by demonstrating that mobility, usability,
satisfaction, cost, social influence and facilitating conditions influence the intention towards use of a
mobile phone to access internet which in turn affects usage.
Though the study has Iimitations, the inferences of the results provide practical recommendations to the
mobile internet service industry and directions for further work.

▼ There has been a transformation in the way insurance services are delivered in the country. Mobile phones have enhanced rapid penetration of insurance products to mass-market and furthermore created opportunities for new business models to emerge for example Mobile Micro Insurance model. Empowered with mobile connectivity, micro insurance providers are increasingly mobile technology platforms to deliver new micro insurance products hence transforming the insurance landscape in Kenya. With great adoption of Mobile Phone Technology in Kenya, the objective of this research is to determine whether there is any effect of mobile phone technology on growth of micro insurance in Kenya. This study adopted census survey design and focussed on all insurance companies providing micro insurance in Kenya from year 2009 to year 2013. Primary data was collected by use of questionnaires to micro insurance consultants. Multiple Regression Model was used and data analyzed by use of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 and descriptive statistics used to establish means and standard deviations of the responses. Correlation coefficient (R) and coefficient of determination (R2) was used to establish the nature and strength of relationship, while test of significance was undertaken by use of F test. The study revealed that mobile phone technology explains great percentage of the growth of micro insurance in Kenya. The study, recommend for regulatory authorities to come up with policies that promote mobile micro-insurance business in Kenya such as allowing co-insurance of mobile micro-insurance risks where different companies conglomerate to cover certain aspect of risks that are considered enormous to be covered by a single insurance firm. Insurers to work with regulators to ensure that they are able to seize the opportunities offered by mobile phones across the insurance value chain, such as digitization of client data and more efficient electronic payment systems and Regulation to support these opportunities while ensuring that consumers are protected and have access to appropriate insurance products that they understand and use. Insurers need to carefully design products and processes and pursue new partnerships in order to grasp the tremendous opportunity offered by mobile phones to efficiently provide valuable risk management services.

▼ Since its arrival, the cell
phone has been transforming culture and the ways in which we live, exist and interact with life. With minimal access to telecommunications, since 2006 it has become ubiquitous in Samoa.
Using observation and semi-structured interviews based within two villages in rural Samoa, this thesis has explored the influence of the cell
phone upon Samoan daily lives. It investigates how it came to be in Samoa, what perceptions surround the cell
phone and how it is seen to have contributed and influenced daily activities, culture and customs of villagers.
Similar to research and literature into mobile telephony on other cultures, affordances provided through the cell
phone such as micro coordination and increased connectedness are also being experienced in Samoa, reducing time and space and facilitating activities that required a fair amount of coordination into activities of micro-coordination, also creating greater access to economic opportunities, such as work and the possibility of entrepreneurship. Nonetheless it appears influences such as locality and social status seem to affect the degree of use for Samoans.
The ability to have greater privacy provided by the cell
phone in combination with being able to be perpetually in contact with others across time and space predominantly through communicative methods like SMS or texting seem to be challenging traditional expectations surrounding authority especially around familial relationships. What looks to be the difference between similar experiences in other cultures is the speed to which this technological affordance has been integrated within rural Samoa which had no previous telecommunication availability prior to 2006. This combined with the absolute social and customary expectations placed on the values of obedience, respect, love, selfless service and Christianity appears to be accentuating the ‘loss of parental control’.
Traditional customs such as gift giving have been adapted by the service provider and transferred into the use and practice surrounding the cell
phone into daily activity and use by Samoans resulting predominately in the transference of money but does also include the gifting of cell phones.
Crossing multiple disciplines this thesis explores a number of topics surrounding the cell
phone and highlights the need for further research establishing a primary base from which to build upon.

romantec: artistic expression through cell
phone photography is a one-person exhibition of large scale unframed photographs displayed in the University Art Gallery, Taylor Hall, at California State University, Chico. All of these photographs are taken with a cell
phone camera. They are printed by the artist on an Epson 9900 digital printer using archival Epson Ultrachrome HDR ink on Breathing Color's Elegance Velvet Matte paper. Each print is archivally laminated using Breathing Color's Timeless Matte varnish.
The prints in romantec are the record of adventures experienced and captured with my camera at dusk and in the dark of the evening. While looking through the lens of a new technology, old world ideas of beauty are rediscovered, revealing ideas similar to those expressed by Romantic, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist artists who delved into mysteries of the universe and spiritual realms with attention to science, beauty,
and perception. This paper discusses the artistic motive and process behind the works, relevant technological aspects, as well as various historical contexts, which aid in the understanding of these works.

▼ Using Global Production Network (GPN) theory as the foundation, this research focuses on the growth and proliferation of mobile telephone subscriptions in the eight full member markets of the Central American Integration System (SICA), from years 2000 to 2014. The purpose and inspiration behind this research was to study the phenomenal growth rate of mobile telephone subscriptions globally, study mobile telephone penetration rate (MPR), and to answer the main research question, “What’s causing mobile telephone subscription growth in the full member Central American Integration System markets?” In addition to the main research question this research responded to research sub-questions, “Why are some markets above the 100% mobile telephone penetration rate?”; “Why are some markets not above the 100% mobile telephone penetration rate?” Hypothesis were developed for each market, and the information from the regression model was used in responding to hypothesis developed for each market. A mathematical equation of each SICA market’s regression model was constructed. The research showed that the dependent variable, mobile telephone subscriptions, was correlated with the covariates as well as the population and income variables were shown to be contributors to mobile telephone subscription growth in the full member SICA markets.

▼ Human travel affects important processes in public health and infectious disease dynamics. Refined spatial and temporal data are needed to accurately model how the dynamics of human travel contribute to epidemiological patterns of disease as well as access to healthcare resources. Here, I address a number of key issues related to modeling human mobility patterns and applications for understanding the spatial spread of infectious diseases and geographic access to public health resources. Using large sources of behavioral data anonymously collected from mobile phones within two African countries, I first analyze the utility of these data to quantify human mobility patterns as well as the usefulness of common modeling frameworks. Then I compare these data to two more common sources of human travel data: the national census and a comprehensive travel survey. Next, I use these data to assess the impact of human travel on the movement of malaria parasites. The final component of my thesis focuses on the utility of this data source to generally understand the role of geographic isolation on travel patterns to better understand the disparity between areas with various levels of access to public resources and the uptake of preventative healthcare such as immunizations and antenatal care.

▼ With rapid deployment of reliable mobile data networks and rising smartphone adoption, there is a
growing opportunity for digital delivery of agricultural extension services in rural India. This project
worked with a company called Cheruvu which began as a provider of soil testing services in Telangana
India. Cheruvu has developed a mobile application to convey the results and recommendations based on
farmers’ soil tests. Through surveys and interviews with some Cheruvu’s customers, this project will give
advice to Cheruvu about their next steps.
Results show that the farming information is shared primarily through pre-existing social networks and
that it is difficult to introduce other forms of information sharing. The greatest demand for information is
related to emergent issues that occurred over the farming season such as pests or disease. The local
fertilizer shops dominate as providers of both information and solutions for these emergent issues.
According to the interviewees, the biggest barrier for adoption of smartphone applications was lack of
education and access to smartphones by the farmers in the household.
Our findings suggest that Cheruvu should continue to provide farmers with a paper form to ensure that
farmers receive their advice. Cheruvu can also increase adoption at the village level by working with local
influencers and offering solutions to problems as they arise during the cropping season.

▼ The mobile phone has been dubbed the “the single most transformative tool” for development, its usage has
increased coupled with lots of technological advancement. This dissertation describes and reports on
mobile grid middleware implementation. The advances in mobile devices promise ubiquitous computing.
Smart mobile phones have relative high computing power which is not fully utilized since they are only
used for making call and text messages.
In this project we develop a middleware framework for grid computing based on android operating mobile
system, on which applications could be built. This middleware acts as a proof of concept that grid
computing can be implemented on mobile phones. The grid middleware runs on android mobile platform,
addressing mobility and resource sharing in mobile grid environment harnessing the raw power of mobile
devices which are not fully utilized.
The methodology used deployed prototyping where agile methodology was used resulting to “inspect-andadapt”
approach to development that greatly reduced development time and delivered working modules.
The middleware comprised of the server and client node applications. The communication was based on
WIFI and successfully tested over mobile telephony network. The middleware communication and task
handling was achieved. The task handling involved the following; ability of client to submit a task request,
to the coordinator, the coordinator generate computational load, the server ability to split the task and to
submit subtask work to client for computation and results returned back and finally the coordinator
aggregating the results and sending to the requesting client.
There was successful testing of the middleware for both nodes that is server and client on emulator and
finally using two Ideos android phones in real work environment. The communication was successful over
mobile operator network where WIFI was not available, proving viability of grid middleware and acting as
a proof of concept that grid computing is possible on mobile phones.

▼ The mobile phone banking services in Kenya is a relatively new concept in the banking sector and it has the potential to drive banks’ success. The introduction of this concept by some commercial banks was aimed at taking advantage of the increased number of mobile phone subscribers. Generally, out of 24,968,891 Kenyans having access to a mobile phone (CCK, 2010), only approximately 9.66 million have bank accounts. Other reasons driving banks to adopt this concept is to increase competitiveness, efficiency and speed in provision of financial services to the banks’ customers for both personal and retail banking and offer them a 24 hours and 7 days a week accessibility to their bank accounts.
The purpose of the research study was to enhance information system security in the mobile phone banking services in Kenya with the view of evaluating the current information system security and the mobile phone technologies available in Kenya.
The research adopted the descriptive approach. Questionnaires were used as the main instrument for data collection. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of percentages and frequency distribution tables with the help of SPSS (statistical package for social science) program. Histogram and bar graphs were used to present the data.
The expected outcome of the research study was to derive additional information system security measures that will enhance secure provision of mobile phone banking services in Kenya.

▼ Mobile banking services in Kenya have achieved substantial growth since inception in March
2007 when MPESA service was introduced by the leading mobile phone service provider
Safaricom. All the three other mobile phone service providers have since introduced the Mbanking
concept and have seen massive growth eating into the conventional banking
business.
The study's main objectives was to determine the extent of adoption of the mobile phone
banking technology, factors influencing the adoption and to determine the challenges facing
the Mobile Phone Banking in Kenya. The study which was carried out as a case study of
Nairobi CBD adopted descriptive survey research design targeting business persons in the
informal sector in Nairobi city CBD. Random sampling technique was used to identify the
respondents to the study where a total of 100 respondents were targeted. Questionnaire was
the main instruments for data collection which were then analyzed with the assistance of
Statistical Software for Social Scientists (SPSS). Eighty four (84) filled questionnaires were
returned for data analysis.
The study revealed that mobile phone banking services dominate the money transfer service
industry. In a five point rating, the M-banking indicated a rating of 90% as compared to the
others which include; Commercial banks (67%), Postal money transfer services (44%) hand
delivery (54%) and internet banking at 25%. The main reason given for the adoption of the
M-banking was the technological advancement and the accessibility. Most respondents'
interview viewed the adoption of the M-banking to be riding on the accessibility of the
service (25%). Others attributes considered beneficial to the adoption includes; ease to learn
and use (13%), service publicity (12%), Improved technology (13%) and the ability to use the
service to pay bills (11%) among others.
The respondents identified various challenges which were considered to hinder the adaptation
of the M-banking concept to include; fraud and illegal transactions (35%), Delays in network
(21%), lack of enough float at the agents outlets (18%).The researcher, following the
conclusion of the study had various recommendations to make. Most prominent of these
include; the need for mobile phone service providers to boost their capacities to reach more
people who may need the M-banking services especially in the informal sector, delays should
be eradicated to allow for efficiency and effectiveness and establishment of more secure
outlets. Others recommendations were that there is need for more surveillance and
monitoring for fraud.

▼ Traffic flow, allocation and availability of parking space within the streets of Nairobi, is a
major concern to for every motorist. Parking is managed by the City Council of Nairobi
(CCN) and this exercise is currently a nightmare for the officials of the city council. For
the CeN the concern is the allocation of parking space and charging thereof, while for the
motorist, the concern is the need to park his/her vehicle as well as get fairly charged for
the service. On the other hand, anyone visitmg the city is concerned about the congestion
in the city among other things.
The availability of the mobile phone and its increased affordability has led to its adoption
as the main gadget and techno logy for contemporary communication in most developing
countries. Furthermore, the convenience it offers to users and its cost effectiveness has
made it the technology driver not just in developing world but also in the developed
countnes. One area where its application has born fruits in some countries is m mobile
parking.
By use of mobile communication as applied in telematics' , cities in countries such as
Sweden, Singapore and Germany have experienced increased efficiency in traffic
management and parking fees collection as well as prevention of car theft.
In some cases, this technology is based on a specific software or hardware. The
complexities involve even the service providers of the mobile communication services
and banking organizations. This means that technology used in the aforementioned states
may not be appropriately imported and used in Kenya.
This fact makes it necessary for any mobile-phone based solution required for traffic
management to be locally developed; hence the mobile phone-based parking system that
is the subject of this project.
This project seeks to provide a local solution to the problem by developing a prototype
system that can allow payment and remote access to parking information via a mobile
phone

▼ Mobile phone technology has grown rapidly in developing countries and its impact at the
macro economic level has been phenomenal. Kenya has not been left behind in this growth
that has been witnessed world over literarily breaking economic barriers. The growth of the
mobile phone in Kenya has been both in numbers of subscribers and geographical foot print
and statistics from the sector regulator indicated that the subscriber numbers were in excess
of 18.5Million and geographical coverage at 84 %(CCK, 2009)
The key questions of the research were based on the affordability issues when it comes to
mobile phone adoption and the question of a mobile technology adoption model that can
address the needs of the low income earners. The study found out that the adoption of the
mobile phone in the subject area was 80% and the users of mobile phones spent between 1225%
of their income on running of mobile phone against proposed internationals standards of
5%of income on communication services. 30% of the adopters of the mobile phone were
dependent on third party sources for air time and this findings suggested that the rural poor
maybe adopting mobile phone but at a very high cost and there needs to be refocused policy
shift that looks at universal service in the context of mobile phone as opposed to legacy fixed
network. The adoption of mobile phone among the majority in the rural areas does not
necessarily conform to well known models of adoption as in some cases adoption takes place
before acceptance due to a large majority in rural areas being dependent upon the urban
population in both acquisition and maintenance of mobile phones majorly for maintaining
social networks and relations.

▼ An accepted position among business executives is that external factors such as competition situation and market size are key success factors in the communication industry. Therefore it is a key function among the top leadership of a business unit to come up with appropriate strategies to capture opportunities presenting itself in the market and at the same time limit any threats present in the market. This means that business entities adjust their operations continuously so as to capture the opportunities that arise as well as vend of any business challenges that will affect the business strategies. Therefore, the capacity of a firm to re-orientation has a strong and positive impact on performance. However, in doing so, due consideration should be given to the specific firm capabilities used to implement market orientation into the target market. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of marketing orientation on business performance of mobile phone companies in Kenya. The study used primary data which was collected using self-administered questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences and presented in tables and charts. Regression analysis was undertaken to determine the relationship between marketing orientation and performance. The study found out that customer orientation has enabled the firms to ensure that its customers are satisfied, increase customer value, understanding customer needs, closely monitoring and assessing company level of commitment in serving customer needs. Customer orientation enabled the sales people regularly share information within the organization concerning competitors’ strategies, target customers when the company has opportunity, discuss competitors’ strength and weaknesses and responds rapidly to competitive actions. The inter-functional coordination was achieved by the companies through communication of customers’ information, all the departments being responsive to one another’s needs and requests, managers understanding how employees can contribute to the value of customers and that all the business functions are integrated in serving the needs of target markets. The regression analysis showed that customer orientation, competitor orientation and inter-functional coordination jointly influence the firm performance.

▼ The present study examined objective measurements of cognitive performance in tasks a clinician may use when evaluating an adult for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to determine if the cell
phone behavior and self-reported text-message dependency and social media use accounted for the variance in scores. Seventy-four participants were included. in stepwise multiple regression analyses. Independent sample t-tests found age of first cell
phone was significantly higher for men than women and reported significantly decreased sense of control over their social media use. Reported number of texting behavior (i.e. daily number of texts sent, received, and checked) were positively correlated with perceived excessive use measured by Self-Perception of Text Messaging Dependence Scale; however, increased anxiety, disappointment, and need to maintain relationships were not correlated which suggest a possible concrete evaluation of participantâs dependence. Stepwise regression analyses included two remarkable findings of reported cell
phone behavior in scores on Controlled Oral Word Association Task (COWAT) and Connersâ Continuous Performance Test II (CPT-II) Omissions. Texts sent and received predicted lower scores on COWAT FAS and Animals, while length of cell
phone ownership (i.e. age of first cell
phone) predicted higher inattention scores on CPT-II Omissions. These two findings, therefore, warrant future research to examine if a causative effect of cell
phone behavior is present in these two assessments which suggest clinician caution in interpretation between ADHD and learned behavior impulsivity.

▼ Over the last decade the use of cellphones has increased dramatically among the young adolescent population. In New Zealand, most children of this age also use a cordless
phone. With the rapid proliferation in children‘s use of these devices, there has been increasing concern about whether children are more vulnerable than adults to possible adverse outcomes if such effects do result from wireless
phone radiofrequency exposure.
This is the first study of young New Zealanders‘ wireless
phone habits, focusing particularly on the extent of use, and the relationship of that use with well-being. Two studies were undertaken: a census of schools with Year 7 and 8 classes in the Wellington Region of New Zealand to ascertain what rules were in place regarding cellphones at school, and a cross-sectional survey of students from the same region, using a representative sample of 373 students aged 10.3-13.7years. Both studies were conducted by the author independently from any research group.
The primary research appears in Part II. Chapter 5 presents wireless
phone user-habits. The large majority of young adolescents were already using cellphones and cordless phones regularly in 2009, although use was generally light or moderate. A small group (5%) was using both
phone types extensively (≥ 30 minutes cordless daily plus ≥ 10 cellphone calls weekly); almost a quarter used a cordless
phone ≥ 30 minutes daily, and 6% reported, on average, 1¼ hours or more use daily. This extent of use over 4 or more years has been associated in several major studies with an increased risk of glioma. Both the MoRPhEUS data and this study‘s data (Appendix 1 and Chapter 5) showed that use of the two
phone types is positively correlated, increasing the comparative and actual radiofrequency exposure in heavy users. Cellphone use during school was compared with school expectations, discussed in chapter 6, showing there was a considerably greater level of illicit use than that of which principals were aware. This use was adjacent to the lower abdomen, and a brief review of relevant fertility literature suggested that cellphone use, or even carriage, in that position may impair sperm quality and duration of use like this appeared consistent with reduced fertility.
A novel observation is explored in chapter 7. The mental process in recalling the extent of cellphone use was not linear. It parallels that found in many types of magnitude estimation, using a logarithmic mental number line. This carried implications for epidemiology methods that use recall data, particularly the need to record the geometric rather than arithmetic mean when a range of estimated use is provided. Not doing so put almost 5% of participants in an incorrect category when estimated use was split into tertiles.
Recall estimation has a large variance. Chapter 8 presents a Bayesian method of reducing estimation bias in recall data. It should be applicable for use by studies that conform to the method‘s requirements. Chapter 9 presents the results of logistic regression analysis of the…

▼ In recent years, mobile phone use in healthcare delivery has been the focus of healthcare
research. Of great interest to researchers is to study and understand the acceptance and use of
mobile payments in health delivery since mobile payments serves as a complementary service
to mobile health. Mobile payments provides a solution to the growing moral hazards and
security risks associated with cash payments in healthcare delivery and also lessens the
institutionalization of informal payments in health delivery.
A census was conducted on all health facilities within the Ayawaso municipality and the
results analyzed with the help of structural equation modelling (SEM) via the AMOS
software package in SPSS version 22. The constructs were tested and found to have high
validity. Fifty-three percent of providers were found to be currently accepting mobile
payments at their facilities.
The study concluded that performance expectancy and perceived cost are strongly associated
with the intention to use mobile payment systems and the actual use of mobile payment
systems and recommended that healthcare providers should analyze the task-technology fit of
payments and liaise with mobile money operators to shorten the series of steps needed
towards completion of mobile payments to save time for patients and providers.

▼ This study describes a method to integrate a personal handy-phone system (PHS) positioning system, which utilizes the electric-field intensity of the base station, with an exploration method, which utilizes the directional-antenna terminal electric-field strength, to search lost items in logistics markets. This methodology employs the directional antenna to confirm the position of the lost item within the errors of the PHS positioning system. An effective exploration method is proposed by comparing the position, which is obtained from the relationship between the electric-field intensity of the PHS terminal and the distance, and the position obtained from the cross point of directions of the maximum terminal electric-field intensity measured at several positions. By focusing on Chinese logistics business background and targeting the positioning and car sharing, the quantitative utilization tendency and requirement estimation are done by using the traffic data which includes PHS positioning data, reservation data, cycle data, etc.

▼ We demonstrated a mobile phone sensing platform, MoboSens, with integrated plug-n-play microelectronic ionic sensor that performs electrochemical measurement by using audio jack of a smart phone. This platform was used to measure nitrate concentration using a few microliter liquid samples on field along with providing geospatial map locations through a wireless network. This compact MoboSens platform (~65 gram), based on a smart phone, is able to detect nitrate concentration in water with a detection limit of 0.2 ppm within 1 minute. The nitrate ion detection on MoboSens platform is performed by a microfabricated microfluidic sensor utilizing a cyclic voltammetry based electrochemical process. The stability of the measurements was verified by performing the experiments under varying temperature, pH and ion interference conditions. The mobile phone app reports the quantitative nitrate sensing results along with user-input metadata. The results can be automatically saved on secure cloud servers or can be pushed on public social media, e.g., Twitter. Finally, the digital sensing information can be retrieved with geospatial information tagged on an internet map service, e.g., Bing Map, for public sharing and viewing. We tested this lab-on-a-chip mobile sensing platform for field water quality measurement and confirmed our mobile sensing results with other existing analytical testing methods.

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2014.
Personal communication devices such as basic cell phones, enhanced cell phones (smartphones) and tablet computers provide users instant access to a wealth of electronic media such as the Internet, email, and instant texting. In hospitals the potential distraction of personal communication devices could be particularly hazardous. However, the extent of this issue is unknown. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the frequency of personal communication device (basic cell phones, enhanced cell phones (smartphones) and tablet computers) use among hospital registered nurses, and (2) to identify the concerns and opinions among hospital registered nurses regarding personal communication device use on in-patient units. In March 2014 a previously validated 30-question survey was emailed to the 10,978 members of the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses. There were 825 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. The use of a personal communication device while working was reported by 78.1% of respondents. Sending personal emails and text messages while working was acknowledged by 38.6% of respondents. Nurses reported shopping on the Internet (9.6%), checking/posting on social networking sites (14.3%) and playing online games (6.5%) while working. Safety concerns were expressed by 87.2% who believe that personal communication devices on a nursing unit are a serious distraction and 69.5% who believe that personal communication devices in hospitals have a negative on patient care. Registered nurses reported that distraction by their personal communication device had negatively affected their performance as a nurse (7.4%), that they had witnessed another registered nurse negatively affected (70.9%); that they had missed important clinical information (4%), that they had witnessed another registered nurse miss important clinical information (29.9%), that they had made a medical error (0.8%) and had witnessed another registered nurse make a medical error (13.1%) as a result of their use of a personal communication device. This study suggests that the majority of registered nurses believe that personal communication device use on hospital units raise significant safety issues. There is a need for further study of this issue and to establish a consensus on the appropriate use of personal communication device while working in hospitals.

▼ As vehicle manufacturers continue to increase their emphasis on safety with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), I propose a ubiquitous device that is able to analyze and advise on safety conditions. Mobile smartphones are increasing in popularity among younger generations with an estimated 64% of 25-34 year olds already using one in their daily lives. with over 10 million car accidents reported in the United States each year, car manufacturers have shifted their focus of a passive approach (airbags) to more active by adding features associated with ADAS (lane departure warnings). However, vehicles manufactured with these sensors are not economically priced while older vehicles might only have passive safety features. Given its accessibility and portability, I target a mobile smartphone as a device to compliment ADAS that can bring a driver assist to any vehicle without regards for any on-vehicle communication system requirements. I use the 3-axis accelerometer of multiple Android based smartphone to record and analyze various safety factors which can influence a driver while operating a vehicle. These influences with respect to the driver, vehicle and road are lane change maneuvers, vehicular comfort and road conditions. Each factor could potentially be hazardous to the health of the driver, neighboring public, and automobile and is therefore analyzed thoroughly achieving 85.60% and 89.89% classification accuracy for identifying road anomalies and lane changes, respectively. Effective use of this data can educate a potentially dangerous driver on how to operate a vehicle safely and efficiently. with real time analysis and auditory alerts of these factors, I hope to increase a driver's overall awareness to maximize safety.

▼ Survey of Kenya is the country's institution charged with the
responsibility of collecting, checking, storing and disseminating Land
parcel related records.
Of late efforts have been made to digitize these records and form a
database. However the majority of the records are in paper form.
Dissemination of this data, done through a search, is still manual. The
public fill a search form and pay a small fee, and the records are
reproduced to them in form of a filled and dully signed form or map or
both. A government seal is impressed on the search and an
incremental search number filled as evidence of authenticity.
This project is intended to create a subsystem that can access a
prototype lands database and access user defined datasets regarding a
parcel of land. This will be done via a Graphical User Interface which is
a website. A customer queries the database to verify availability of the
data. Upon confirmation the search data is then billed via existing
mobile phone money transfer services and a search compiled
containing the requested information. An option exists for an
accompanying map to be attached to the search. The final search
document has electronic signatures of time, unique search number and
time-stamps.

▼ Šiame darbe išnagrinėjau darbo su duomenų
bazėmis ypatumus dirbant su Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operacine
sistema.
In this work I explored the characteristics
of working with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating systems database.
In this work there are explored local and external databases and
other data storage methods. While working with local data
structures I explored the ways of working with SQL CE database,
Sterling database and with isolated data storage. And while working
with external databases I explore and show with examples the ways
of data extraction. I especially carefully explored HTTP requests,
WCF technology and WebBrowser object use. I have also provided a
table in which I compare the work capabilities with databases of
Windows Phone 7.5, Android and IOS. As a practical part of this
work I tried to realize electronic diary system which consists of:
1) MySQL database installed in an external server 2) Script written
in PHP language and workink in external server 3) Windows Phone
applications communicating with HTTP server
requests.

▼ The purpose of this project was to create an Android
phone application that could be used to teach Texas Paleontology in a secondary school classroom. Since experienced teachers have reported that many students who do not have personal computers at home still have their own cell phones, the concept of using mobile devices for science education is very attractive to educators. In order to test out this idea the project had to include not only a mobile app, but also a webqest to help seamlessly integrate that app into Earth Science curriculum. To begin the project, I developed the Texas Paleontology webquest as a frame for the cell
phone integration. In this activity the students are required to create their own field trip to explore relevant paleontological locations in Texas. They are required to document their field trip using Google Maps. These field trips could eventually be used to enhance the Android Application. The development of the Android Application represents the majority of this project. It was designed to be an app that can either stand alone or work with the Texas Paleontology webquest. In order to create this application I had to learn the XML and JAVA programming languages and become familiar with the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment and the Android Software Development Kit. The results of the project can be downloaded from the Android Market b searching for "Texas Paleontology." This report not only includes a description of how the application could be integrated into the classroom, but also an instruction guide for how to create an Android Application in a similar way. As cell
phone technology becomes even more prevalent it is likely that more educators will want to utilize mobile application development in their own classrooms. This report provides a starting point for accomplishing this integration.

▼ Mobile phone use while in the presence of physical conversational partners is a reality in modern day life. Many researchers have investigated how different subgroups use mobile phones and the consequences of such use. The goal of this research was to determine how mobile phones are used in social settings when face-to-face conversations are taking place. The main questions that the research attempted to solve were: (1) If the phone use was related to the conversation at hand, (2) if the intensity of phone use was correlated to how the phone was used, (3) and if phones are used during conversations in different ways depending on the relationships and demographics of the conversational partners.
The research was conducted in Malmö, Sweden at bars and cafes´ by administering a semi structured verbal interview on people seen using their cell phones while in face-to-face conversations. Relevant demographic information was recorded as well as five open ended questions. The questions were aimed at understanding how the phone was used, and the phones use in relation to the physical conversation.
The research was conducted using the research paradigm of Positivism and the data was analyzed using an Inductive research strategy. Uses and Gratifications theory was the main theory that this research was viewed through. In addition, relevant information was drawn from various psychological theories as well as problematic mobile phone research.
The findings show that the majority of phone use is unrelated to the conversations at hand. But often this phone use is re-integrated into the conversation at a later time. It was also found that phone use related to information retrieval was most likely to be related to the face-to-face conversation. Additionally, the data showed that conversational partners that use the phone a lot are highly unlikely to be using the phone in relation to the conversation. The data showed that friends are most likely to not use the phone in relation to the conversation.

▼ The goal of the Masters project is to develop an application, mainly designed for tracking the lost mobile
phone. It is embedded with several tracking features, which will help tracking the lost
phone. All the features work on SMS (short text message) basis. So, incoming SMS format plays a vital role. Application on the current platform Mobile Defense is a related app, which uses GPS to track the lost
phone of the device or uses the cell tower data to send the coordinates. However, it does not take pictures of the user with inbuilt camera present on the device to track the user with picture and lacks SMS feature, which will be implemented in the current project. Similarly on IOS (iphone OS) an application called Find My iphone which only provides the Location of the device.
Android application running in the cell monitors all the incoming messages. If the SMS is meant for the application, it reads the same and performs the expected task. The application auto starts every time you boot your cell, goes to running mode and continuously listens for the incoming SMS messages. Whenever there is a new incoming SMS, it checks the content of the message and does the certain designed features in the application.
??? Show Me where you are
??? Unknown SIM Identifier
??? Show Me the Picture
??? Call Monitoring Tool
??? Profile management
This Master???s project demonstrates added advantage of SMS features, from which user can track the
phone. SMS are easy to use and has no dependency on cellular data. In comparison to related application on Android and IOS, the designed application can give the GPS location by sending the SMS, taking the picture and can still work on changing the SIM card.
