In an era where economic turbulence is constant with many organisations rightsizing to remain competitive, customer value improvement (CVI) is central to organisational strategy. As a panacea for this customer value improvement or continuous improvement challenge, many excellence frameworks and improvement methodologies have guided organisations to performance improvement since the 1980s. Despite their popularity, numerous authors have reported inadequacies and have made calls for improvement. Consequently, the research aim for this study was to review customer value improvement with a view to developing and validating a new customer value improvement (CVI) framework and to provide deeper knowledge and understanding of customer value improvement for increased organisational return on investment ROI.
As part of the first strand of the literature review, a review of the effectiveness of the MBNQA Award and the EFQM Excellence Model was carried out. The second strand reviewed the effectiveness of Six Sigma. The third strand of the research reviewed the role of strategic quality and customer value. Combining these three research strands enabled the researcher to distil the key concepts for customer value improvement.
In order to address the research aim, a mixed methodology approach of survey and in-depth interview was used to answer the following questions: Q1. What are the key components of customer value improvement in organisations for increased ROI? Q2. How are these components of customer value improvement connected inside a customer value improvement framework? Q3. What knowledge is required by leaders and improvement specialists for effective adoption of organisational customer value improvement for increased ROI?
This doctoral study has made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of customer value improvement research. First, this study has developed and validated a new framework. Second, this study has provided deeper knowledge and understanding for organisational leaders and improvement specialists through work undertaken for three peer reviewed journals. Third, this study has validated (Conti 2011) assertions concerning the inadequecies of the existing excellence frameworks. Fourth, this study has extended the work of Maier (1955) on people performance models by validating a more comprehensive performance model. Finally, the empirical study demonstrates that this new validated CVI framework has practical application in all organisations looking to increase the ROI through customer value improvement.

▼ For service organizations to achieve higher performance, quality should never be compromised at all costs. Employing of reliable and a valid instrument of quality measurements are essential for performance improvements. The research focused on the service quality delivery service and performance improvement in healthcare at Kenyatta National Hospital. The findings proved that, Kenyatta National Hospital widely employed the usage of the service quality dimensions in responding to their customers‟. The service quality in this regard were; Reliability, Assurance, Tangibility, Empathy and Responsiveness while the performance measurement were determined by structural indicators, process indicators and outcome indicators. Structured questionnaires were administered to personnel working at the facility and patients‟ to gauge their opinion on the application of these instruments and the results indicated greatest usage of service quality dimensions though the facilities encountered challenges such as inadequacy of the specialists staffs and lack of modern diagnosing tools such as MRIs scan. Furthermore, the staffs to patient ratio were very small where buy accessing the 24hr healthcare service was a problem. The recommendations were; the management to employ the competent staff for quick response to patients‟ issues, increase the remuneration of its staff, and offer training opportunities to her staffs about service quality. Therefore, it is important to note that, organizations should constantly monitor their performance and employ valid and reliable measurement indicator which are well designed, defined and implemented amicably with scientific rigour.

▼ This study was conducted to discover if coaching direct reports for
performance improvement was currently happening in organizations. Using the qualitative interpretative phenomenology analysis methodology, eight participants were interviewed. The participants represented four organizations and had managerial experience ranging from four to 44 years. Participants were interviewed and presented the ten most frequently cited competencies from managerial coaching literature on cards for them to organize into a representation of their coaching process. The data analysis process encompassed data reduction and analysis of each interview that then produced emergent themes. The findings included the emergence of three superordinate themes: coaching categories for successful coaching, use of coaching competencies in
performance coaching, and
performance coaching and management style. Other findings included all participants using a progressive type of
performance coaching. They each had unique uses of the coaching competencies and they identified some as overarching, foundational, or most important. Lastly, the participants all maintained that coaching for
performance improvement was a large and integral part of their management style. Some of the implications of the study include: (a) progressive coaching is a process that can be adapted, taught, and implemented in organizations today; (b) less formal coaching conversations are happening regularly and should be encouraged; (c) consistency of coaching is important to the success of the direct reports (d) and metrics are important when coaching for
performance improvement and they should be clearly established. This study demonstrates that managers coaching their direct reports for
performance improvement is happening and successful.

performance via Continuous
Improvement (CI) activities as a whole, and the relationships among them within the context of various levels of employees and different functional areas at one North American Automotive Supplier. Dimensions of HRD practices – HRD framework (Garavan, 2007) have been adapted as independent variables, sixteen indicators adapted from the
Performance Improvement Model (Jorgensen, Boer & Laugen, 2006) have been explored as three dependent variables. In addition, six CI abilities have been examined as mediators from the CI Maturity Model (Bessant & Caffyn, 1997) and two different moderators have been defined based on the real practices of the target population. In brief, only the first hypothesis was positively supported and the second and the third one were not supported in the overall relationship.

▼ Performance management remains a challenge for many organisations, despite progress made in administrative science research and practice. Utilising an action research approach, this study explored the experience and immediate effects of implementing an integrated performance management model, across organisational, departmental and individual levels. The connection to the personal level is also explored. Several lessons were learned from the experience of developing, implementing and using an integrated approach to performance management in the context of a shared services organisation. The importance of aligning implementation timing with other organisational priorities is one of them. The role of leadership and skilled professionals in implementation and utilisation of performance management systems in another. Thirdly, the study outlines a universally applicable performance management framework which can may be used as a platform for knowledge alignment and concept validation by both researchers and practitioners.

▼ Middle management resistance to improvement efforts is one of the most frequently cited barriers to organizational success. There is not much research on the effect of middle management support for improvement on organizational performance. In this research, the relationship between dimensions of middle management support for improvement and dimensions of organizational performance capabilities was explored. Final analysis was based on a total sample of sixty-six participants from a metropolitan university. Two surveys were administered, one assessing middle management support behaviors and one assessing organizational performance capabilities. The results of a canonical correlation analysis indicated the two sets of variables (middle management support for improvement and organizational performance capabilities) were significantly related to each other. The more middle managers provide open communication and work toward building a trusting environment, the more likely employees were to view the organization as strong in terms of leadership.

▼ Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology that utilizes the electrical field between two electrodes to remove the ions from the salty waters. The ions are stored in the electrical double layers (EDLs) forming at the interface between the electrode matrix and the aqueous solution. Until now, numerous effort has been devoted to studying the ion transport mechanisms and to fabricating high-
performance electrodes. Yet, there lacks a fair evaluation framework and systematic understanding of the dependences among the operational variables. In this dissertation, we start with the thermodynamically reversible cycle to show the ideal operation of CDI, followed by comparing it with the CDI operation in reality to reveal that the energy efficiency of CDI is relatively low. We move on to understanding the energy losses during the charging and discharge steps of CDI. The quantification of the energetic-kinetic tradeoff for CDI demonstrates that the energetic efficiency cannot be divorced from the kinetic efficiency. We then employ the tradeoff curve to evaluate the two commonly used charging method, i.e. constant voltage and constant current, of CDI, and found out that which is better depends on the separation scenarios. In order to reduce the energy consumption, we decrease the impedance of electrode macropores by filling with conductive polyelectrolytes, with which the energy consumption saves up to half of that in membrane CDI. In the last chapter, we model the continuous operation of flow electrode CDI (FCDI) with an equivalent model that considering the flow electrodes as film electrodes rotating around the electrode chamber. The model successfully capture the phenomelogical characteristics of FCDI including effluent concentration, current density and cell voltages. In summary, this dissertation introduces the framework for CDI
performance evaluation, and demonstrates the effective direction to improve the
performance.

▼ The main purpose of the study was to explore the effectiveness of
performance appraisal in ethio telecom in correlating with staff professional
improvement and organizational development. In order to achieve the objective of the study, descriptive survey method was employed. The study used questionnaire to collect primary data. Accordingly 182 respondents from 1821 employees working in the six zonal offices were selected using purposive sampling technique .the data gathered through questionnaire were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics mainly frequency, percentage and correlation coefficient respectively. The descriptive study revealed that is unclear
performance standards/criteria, lack of ongoing
performance feedback, rater’s error in evaluating
performance and use of
performance appraisal program for administrative purpose only. The inferential study also revealed that there is a strong positive relationship between
performance appraisal variables with personal
improvement and organizational development particularly appraisal process and procedure. Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that the appraisal process was not clearly communicated before implementation; lack of required skill on the side of the appraiser and the criteria is weak to measure
performance highly affected the overall effectiveness of the
performance appraisal of ethio teleocm at large and personal development in particular. It is recommended that since appraisal process and procedures are the most significant factors of all the
performance appraisal dimensions resulting in personal
improvement and organizational development, the management should conduct detailed study and assess critically on
performance appraisal process and procedures for it is a starting point in the design of
performance appraisal dimensions. Moreover, it is recommended that ethio telecom should device training for it’s appraisers to make them equip with the all the required skill which in turn will avoid problems related with failing to keep file during prior to evaluation periods, giving equivalent ratings to all regardless of their
performance and not frequently letting know how employees are doing which impacts and affects both personal
improvement and organizational development.

▼ Improving program performance through the use of multiple homogeneous processing elements, or cores, is common-place. However, these architectures increase the complexity required at the software level. Existing work is focused on optimising programs that run in isolation on these systems, but ignores the fact that, in reality, these systems run multiple parallel programs concurrently with programs competing for system resources. In order to improve performance in this shared environment, cooperative tuning of multiple, concurrently running parallel programs is required. Moreover, the set of programs running on the system – the system workload – is dynamic and rapidly changing. This makes cooperative tuning a challenge, as it must react rapidly to changes in the system workload. This thesis explores the scope for performance improvement from cooperatively tuning skeleton parallel programs, and techniques that can be used to cooperatively auto-tune parallel programs. Parallel skeletons provide a clear separation between algorithm description and implementation, and provide tuning knobs that the system can use to make high-level changes to a programs implementation. This work is in three parts: (i) how many threads should be allocated to each program running on the system, (ii) on which cores should a programs threads be executed and (iii) what values should be chosen for high-level parameters of the parallel skeletons. We demonstrate that significant performance improvements are available in each of these areas, compared to the current state-of-the-art.

Purpose: To explore the benefits of a digital prioritisation tool for improvements, for support functions in a manufacturing industry, based on performance measurements and costumer needs. Additionally, to examine the benefits of using OEE as an overall measurement for such a tool, and the available benefits of connecting said tool with daily management if it were to be visualised digitally. Methodology: In order to elucidate and attempt to solve the formulated problems of the study, a case study has been carried out in parallel with a literature study. During the literature study, material within…

▼ A review of the research literature and observations obtained from personal professional experience in process improvement indicate process improvement success is not guaranteed and there are many factors that conspire to push improvement initiatives toward failure. Indications are that process improvement failure rates in manufacturing environments are high and that performance gains attained struggle to be sustained over time. The same mistakes appear to occur repeatedly and it would appear at first glance that manufacturing organisations on the whole are slow and ineffective learners. However often before undertaking a course of education it is first necessary to understand that an entity, either person or organisation, has a knowledge gap that would be beneficial to close. It is difficult to take action on risks inhibiting the likelihood of success if that organisation is oblivious to the existence of these risks. A further problem occurs when organisations attempt process improvement and set performance targets which in practice the organisation has little chance of achieving. In these circumstances personnel involved may experience frustration and discontent when improvements initiatives continually flounder and as a result avoid further participation at all costs. This situation is not inevitable and is avoidable. A risk assessment method has been developed in this research with the aim of providing manufacturing organisations in particular with knowledge they require to increase their probability of success in process improvement projects. The method provides knowledge the organisation requires of the capability areas they need to strengthen and guidance on areas to tackle first. From data collected on the state of the manufacturing improvement system the risk assessment model provides an estimate of the probability of success or odds of achieving defined performance targets. Access to this quantitative probability of success predictions for future performance allows a more realistic matching of performance gain expectation to the capability of achieving that gain. Use of the new developed risk assessment method provides therefore a benefit to manufacturing industry by better matching improvement expectations to existing capability to achieve them. New variables and functions have been developed as components of the innovative risk assessment model. The ‘performance effectiveness’ variable kP is a new measure of the effort applicable to obtain a level of performance gain. The new function P vs kP matches performance gain to the effort required to attain that gain based on characteristics of the specific process improvement project. The function kP vs SC specifies the range of effort kP an organisation can apply to an improvement based on their level of improvement capability defined as the ‘capability score’ SC. Integration of these functions provides a quantitative estimate of the probability of success in attaining a desired performance target. As a result…

▼ The purpose of this paper is to present a case study
on the application of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) quality improvement
methodology and tools to study the analysis and improvement of
facilities management (FM) services at a healthcare organization.
Research literature was reviewed concerning whether or not LSS has
been applied in healthcare-based FM, but no such studies have been
published. This paper aims to address the lack of an applicable
methodology for LSS intervention within the context of
healthcare-based FM. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and
Control (DMAIC) framework was followed to test the hypothesis that
LSS can improve the service provided by an FM department
responsible for the maintenance and repair of furniture and
finishes at a large healthcare organization in the southwest United
States of America. Quality improvement curricula and resources
offered by the case study organization equipped the FM department
to apply LSS over the course of a five-month period. Qualitative
data were gathered from pre- and post-intervention surveys while
quantitative data were gathered with the Organization’s
computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software.
Overall, LSS application proved to be useful for the intended
purpose. The author proposes that application of LSS by other FM
departments to improve their services could also be successful,
which is noteworthy and deserving of continued
research.

▼ In the context of rising demand for health care, growing clinical complexity, and increasing rates of medical intervention, hospitals and health systems around the world are under strain. As pressures on health systems grow, aspects of performance failure are progressively revealed and compounded. Health services, ‘…perceived to be inaccessible, disease-oriented, inflexible, disjointed, error-prone, and inconsistent, and to be delivered by overworked, unmotivated staff’ (Greenhalgh et al. 2009), are not easily improved. This thesis sought to examine public hospital performance and the ways in which hospital performance may be improved, by conducting an in-depth case study of Alfred Health, a high-performing hospital network, located in Melbourne, Australia. Although there is a reasonable volume of research and scholarly writing on the topic of hospital performance and performance improvement, the state of knowledge is poor. Theoretical
understandings are often criticised as rudimentary and overly-simplistic, and empirical evidence is highly contested and largely inconclusive. Two literature reviews informed the development of research aims and questions for this study. The first review surveyed the entire spectrum of theories and explanations of relevance to hospital performance, and the second assessed the state of empirical evidence in support of those theories. A key finding of the two reviews was that the literature on hospital performance tends to be deeply splintered along disciplinary and theoretical lines. As scholars have sought to test the veracity of one isolated explanation for hospital performance (e.g. a funding instrument, or a policy change, or organisational structure, or leadership, or a particular improvement strategy) they have generally missed the significance of the dynamic interactions between each of these elements at play. As suggested here, there is little utility in understanding one or
more organisational elements (splinters) deeply, without also understanding how altering those elements might influence the entire ecology of the system. This study, therefore, was designed to both deepen and broaden knowledge and understanding of public hospital performance and performance improvement. Adopting a critical realist perspective, the research was driven by an overarching pragmatic goal to contribute to public benefit as much as to contribute to the academic corpus. In particular, the study aimed to explore how and explain why various environmental, organisational and strategic factors came to influence the performance trajectory of Alfred Health, a hospital network that appeared to have consistently improved performance over several decades. Two research questions guided the in-depth case study: 1. What were the key contextual conditions and organisational factors that gave rise to Alfred Health’s trajectory of high performance and sustained performance improvement? 2.
How and why did these key contextual conditions and organisational factors come together to produce this result? …

▼ Performance-based compensation is gaining traction in the education systems of countries that lead in the world economy and in comparative international assessments of student achievement. Longstanding and contemporary debates in educational policy and research question the potential of this incentivist policy to improve teaching. Some scholars warn that decades of experimental research have found bonuses yield little or no
improvement in various measures of teaching quality and student achievement. Yet, policymakers and
performance-pay advocates maintain that financial bonuses will lead to better teaching, student learning, and educational markets. As PBC persists, we remain unaware of how financial bonuses are enacted and shape teaching.
To better understand how financial bonuses shape teaching, recent qualitative research has investigated exactly how
performance-based compensation unfolds inside of complex school settings. Building on this emerging scholarship, this research examined the implementation of merit pay and its effects on teaching from the perspectives of teachers at School M1, a high performing elementary school in Shanghai. Those who aspire for high ranks in comparative international assessments and other proxies of global economic leadership are turning to regions such as Shanghai for lessons on “what works.” Shanghai thus provided the opportunity to investigate incentivism in a system that has gained global influence yet whose policies and corresponding practices remain understudied. A principal and 20 teachers were interviewed, and a range of policy documents were collected in This qualitative case study. Data were coded according to theory on incentivism, policy enactment, and teacher development. Responses were then further analyzed to determine recurring themes and patterns. I find that state and national policymakers and the M1 Principal intended for PBC to improve teaching quality. However, the M1 teacher participants perceived bonuses were intended to augment base pay, compensate teachers for their existing effort, and to provoke teachers to exert additional effort. Teachers had little understanding of merit pay implementation processes. While merit pay did not erode teacher relationships, and norms of respect and deference to authority guided teachers’ silence on and acceptance of the policy and shaped their participation in policy enactment. They perceived high expectancy, low instrumentality and valence, and they held mixed views on fairness.
The majority of teachers suggested their sense of motivation and self-efficacy was driven by a sense of personal responsibility for collective good and by public displays of recognition from their peers and superiors. Teachers suggested that social relationships, professional community, and trust were more efficacious ways to get to improved teacher quality. Overall, teachers perceived bonuses neither inspired instructional
improvement compelled their low performing peers to leave the school or the profession.
Advocates suggest bonuses…

Performance management begins to be an increasingly important point not only to have a good management, but to have a good functioning of the institution as well, with the aggravation of the economic crisis we are experiencing today.
The implementation of performance management programs is not always easy because many workers are afraid of being evaluated thus putting a stop to these programs, or even the weak management involvement in the process. But when well executed performance management benefits at the organizational level, for workers, saves time and reduces conflicts.
This study's main objective was to help a conservatory to improve their performance management and for this was used a qualitative and quantitative methodology through a questionnaire from students, parents and employees of the conservatory. In total, the sample consists of 81 students, 25 workers and 60 parents, therefore having a total of 166 questionnaires.
This study can be concluded that the strongest point of the school is teaching where teachers are also encompassed, being the facilities the weakest point. It was also concluded that the management performance of the school is still poorly developed as stated in the literature, but with signs of improvement and willingness to change.

▼ This project sought to see if training frontline nurses and physicians together in Lean methodology improved collaboration between the two disciplines while giving them the tools they need to lead change at the bedside and in their practice. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention methodology was used. The intervention was six, four-hour in-person modules on
performance improvement (PI). Respondents completed two surveys, the
performance improvement instrument and the Professional Practice Environment Assessment Scale (PPEAS). Surveys were paired for analysis. There was a statistically significant median increase in participants confidence for all questions on the PI instrument post-intervention. Results for the PPEAS showed lower scores post-intervention, however, the results were not statistically significant. This project emphasizes that, with time, training, and support from leadership, frontline nurses and physicians can become confident in applying Lean and
performance improvement tools to lead change at the bedside. Improving the professional practice environment will likely need to take place on a larger, organization wide scale to be impactful.

▼ E-learning, also known as cyber learning, has become an important part of society. According to the incredible volume of published articles, institutional investment in practice and uptake of web-based education tools in the past decade demonstrates that E-learning practice has achieved a momentum that will make it a central part of future education. The existing body of literature indicates that E-learning is a means of implementing education that can be applied within varying education models (for example, face-to-face or distance education) and educational philosophies (for example, behaviorism and constructivism). However, the quantitative criteria for improving the online learning system remain a mystery. In this study, an experiment was proposed in which the underlying relationship between personality, perceived workload, EEG-detected emotions and learning
performance in online learning is addressed. In the experiment, participants were exposed to two kinds of stimuli in the learning of a semaphore flag-signaling system, during which their emotions, NASA-TLX scores and quiz scores were recorded and analyzed.
Based on the analysis performed on the study data, the correlation between personality and perceived workload is observed. It is also concluded that a static learning stimulus is superior to the video form. Relaxation, excitement and focus are revealed to be the most significant emotions in our online learning setting. A best model of predicting one’s learning outcome based on form and emotion data is obtained through symbolic regression. Furthermore, Structural Equation Models involving different number of variables were also considered, indicating that excitement is the strongest mediation factor.

▼ The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO) is, currently, undertaking a huge electric
power generation expansion. The generation capacity under construction is about 7757 MW.
This huge expansion demands existing AC transmission line upgrading and new transmission
line installations. On the other hand, instability problems have occurred frequently within
EEPCo system manifesting themselves in the form of system blackouts.
Considering these two problems this thesis work proposes integration of Voltage Source
Converter Based High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system for
improving future system stability and enhancing power transfer capability.
The thesis investigates the dynamic
performance improvements that can be attained through
integrating VSC-HVDC transmission system. The investigation started by developing a
monopolar VSC-HVDC transmission model with a complete control system on Digital
Simulation and Electrical Network calculation program (DIgSILENT power factory) software.
Different controllers are designed including, faster inner current controllers having transient
response specifications: rise time 0.0003 s, settling time 0.000842 s; DC voltage controller
having transient response specifications: rise time 0.00156 s, settling time 0.0132 s; and outer
PQ controllers. Then the
performance of the control system is evaluated and found to function
satisfactorily at supporting bidirectional power flow and at maintaining stability during
disturbances. Finally the designed VSC-HVDC link is integrated to North-Western EEPCo
high voltage grid model and time domain simulations are carried out to investigate system
dynamic
performance improvement. It is obtained that with the proposed option the system
pre-disturbance bus voltage values are improved from below 0.95 pu to 1 pu and post
disturbance bus voltage values are improved from below 0.9 pu to above 0.95 pu. On the other
hand system low load higher voltage values that go beyond upper limit of 1.05 are managed to
come within the limit. A better damping of generators’ rotor angle oscillations is also attained
showing general system dynamic
performance improvement.

▼ This research study sought to find out whether KPRL met its performance improvement
objective by implementing BPR in asset management system and the challenges it faced
which constrained its improvement.
The findings were based on both secondary and primary data. Secondary data was
collected from KPRL records covering six months pre- and post- BPR implementation.
This was the data available for post BPR implementation when the research study was
started. The consideration was for a single item transaction case with the initiator being a
technician level employee and approval up to the supervisor level only. Cost
consideration was for the initiator expenses exclusive of all other transaction associated
costs.
Primary data was obtained through interview where an interview guide was used to
collect data on BPR implementation challenges. Seven informants were targeted to
enable data capture for all the sections and categories involved in asset management.
They included; one engineering head of department, one engineering supervisor, one
mechanical technician, one instrument technician, one electrical technician, one materials
clerk and one contracts clerk.
The study found out that by implementing BPR in asset management, KPRL drastically
improved its materials approval process time by achieving a ten times reduction resulting
in an eleven times reduction in cost too as the two were noted to move in tandem. The
cost consideration represented part of the cost saving in the process and the full
consideration would result in a much high saving.
v
The study also found out that BPR implementation comes with a lot of challenges which
impacts the improvement achieved. On the part of KPRL out of the many challenges
considered, all came out with a significance rating of medium and above with medium
representing 57% and above representing 43%. The biggest challenge experienced by
KPRL was on communication of the project importance within the organization which
was rated high. Generally for any BPR undertaking, reasonable improvement levels can
only be achieved when all challenges are managed to the desired level

utilizadores do serviço.
Portuguese Public Administration has suffered several modernizations and changes,
through which new management instruments and philosophy have been introduced,
namely at the levels of self-evaluation and continuous improvement of the quality of the
services provided.
Quality is a management philosophy that has became fundamental for the current
functioning of any Organization. The adoption of this philosophy in public services
requires a significant effort to change the cultural patterns prevailing in Public
Administration.
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) was created to introduce Total Quality
Management principles in the Public Administration, mostly an assessment and continuous
improvement culture.
Thus, the assessment and self-assessment of the Public Administration performance has
become more relevant in the sense that it guarantees a permanent progress. This is only
possible by means of a reflection on the implemented practice, in order to meet the needs
and respond to the demands of today`s society.
In this context, the present work aims to develop a methodology that showed that the…

▼ Cellular manufacturing is an important approach to the organisation of production. Large benefits are claimed over traditional functional organisation, and it is compatible with prominent manufacturing theories, such as just-in-time, total quality management, and computer integrated manufacturing. Several very successful applications of cellular manufacturing have been reported, but a wide range of performance improvements has also been observed. Many benefits ofcellular manufacturing do not arise directly from changing the organisation and layout ofdirect production resources, but from changes to the way the production process is operated, managed and controlled, that are made possible by the cellular organisation. Underachievement occurs when companies do not identify and exploit such opportunities. This research aims to address the problem by providing a system wide concept of cellular manufacturing and an improved process to support the design of a cellular manufacturing system based on this concept. A review of the theory and practice of cellular manufacturing is presented. A model is proposed, which comprises a general set of mutually compatible, production system wide, production system features for supporting or exploiting self-contained groupings of manufacturing resources. A subset of the features from the general model will be appropriate to a particular application of cellular manufacturing. Current processes for designing cellular manufacturing systems do not adequately support the application of such a concept. In particular, tailoring the general concept ofcellular manufacturing to a specific situation is identified to be an important but widely neglected design activity. A process is defined that makes concept design explicit, and a matrix-based tool developed to relate the features of cellular manufacturing to a company's performance improvement objectives. The value ofthis novel approach to designing cellular manufacturing systems is determined to be in facilitating the generation and communication of insight into the nature ofcellular manufacturing, encouraging a comprehensive appraisal of the concept and its impact throughout the production system, and focusing limited resources where they will be most effective.

▼ Purpose: This master thesis attempts to propose a guideline for improving logistics performance in terms of cost efficiency and on-time delivery in shipper-TPL provider relationships within offshore outsourcing businesses. Methodology: As a first step, the authors construct a conceptual model based on a thorough literature review. In a second step, empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews within a single-case study with dyadic perspectives examining the shipper-TPL provider relationship of Ericsson, Sweden and Aramex, Saudi Arabia. Lastly, the authors are able to develop a final detailed model through merging the discovered theoretical and empirical findings. Findings: The findings of this thesis highlight the impact on performance of the factors of communication, culture, work agreements, standardization, system compliance and trust. Based on these factors, the PILOOR Model is developed that illustrates a sequential order of these factors to improve performance. In detail, the findings suggest to start off with communication and culture in order to foster a mutual understanding. Afterwards, work agreements and standardization within processes and communication channels should be established. Thus, considerable efforts are required within the build-up stage of shipper-TPL provider relationships. Within the execution stage, system compliance is found to enhance performance, in which formal and informal communication tools support performance improvements. Finally, this research highlights that trust develops over time by successfully working on the other factors. In addition, it has an overall positive effect on performance once a sufficient level is achieved. Research Implications: This research is the first to propose a guideline for performance improvements within offshore outsourcing of TPL services through the presented PILOOR Model. Thus, this research fills a significant gap within the body of the TPL literature. Furthermore, the PILOOR Model is believed to support practitioners in successfully building-up and executing their offshore outsourcing shipper-TPL provider relationships. Limitations & Further Research: Due to the choice of methodology, this study is limited in terms of generalizability. Therefore, the authors suggest replicating this study within other offshore outsourcing shipper-TPL relationships. Ideally, the developed PILOOR Model should be tested empirically.

▼ It is of key importance for modern printing systems to maintain high standards of efficiency, reliability and print quality. In this regard, the scope of this work is to investigate the applicability of data analysis and machine learning techniques to improve the performances of industrial printers manufactured at Océ Technologies. Two critical aspects of the considered printing process are analysed and multiple algorithms are developed. Temporary failure of printhead nozzles, a well-known issue in inkjet printing, is first addressed. Available data are used to real-time estimate the health status of each nozzle. This allows for a prompt identification of problematic scenarios and lays the foundations for the introduction of condition-based maintenance. The analysis is further enhanced by the application of machine learning. Gaussian process regression is used to predict the evolution of nozzle failures. The designed solutions show to be precious tools for nozzle prognostics, providing great accuracy and a high level of flexibility. Problematic nozzles can be restored by performing automatic cleaning actions. However, because of the costs and limited efficiency of these, their appropriateness is highly questionable. Such delicate matter is tackled by designing an autoregressive model that enables to define an advanced cleaning strategy. The presented method allows to decrease the cleaning costs up to 5-10%, leading to a considerable operational cost reduction. All the proposed solutions are thoroughly evaluated and compared, considering both their efficiency and implementation costs. Therefore they represent valuable proposals, ready to be factually implemented on an Océ printer.

▼ Globally, the construction industry is considered as one of the most dangerous industries. The industry is known to be a challenging regime in which to practice adequate health and safety as work activities take place in hazardous environments with exposures to heights; changing weather conditions and different locations. More so, construction workers are always expected
to cope with the changing environments and different scopes of work. The construction industry is perceived to be fragmented, unfair and unpredictable regarding the adequate protection of construction site workers, often violating their fundamental human right. Recent construction H&S legislation in South Africa has been amended in an effort to achieve optimum health and safety throughout all construction project phases. However, it would
appear that the primary purpose for compliance with health and safety legislation requirements among contractors is to avoid penalties and for profit maximisation. The purpose of this study was to analyse the recent construction H&S legislation changes (Construction Regulations 2014) and their impact of on construction workers’ quality of life, wellbeing and their sustainability within the South African construction industry. An extensive review of literature on the topic was conducted from online databases, books, articles, reports and other studies.
Furthermore, a quantitative study was employed and data were analysed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Descriptive statistics was adopted for the data analysis and further interpreted using inferential statistics. The total sample size for the study was 120 participants (80 managers and 40 construction workers) where a total of 80 construction companies in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province were conveniently sampled based on proximity and familiarity. The response rate for the study was 78.3%. A total of 64 managers (as representatives of the companies) and 30 construction workers completed close-ended questionnaires. Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test was used to determine the internal consistency of the constructs that had been used to analyse compliance and impact of legislative changes on construction workers wellbeing and the internal consistency of the various scales was deemed acceptable for interpretation. Independent t-test was done to determine the statistical significance of the means between management and construction workers’ responses. There was an overall statistical significance suggesting that both management and construction
workers shared the same views on the impact of H&S legislation on construction workers wellbeing; onsite facilities; the level of compliance with the construction regulations 2014 onsite, and workers wellbeing. However, the respondents did not share the same views on whether there was management commitment; availability of H&S policies onsite; workers’ involvement in H&S inspections, and also if there was sufficient knowledge of the construction H&S legislation. Furthermore, the means from both…

▼ Sustainable manufacturing methods make it possible to develop products in ways which minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and save natural resources whilst being economically sound. The concepts of sustainability in manufacturing being are still fairly broad, in scope, and need to be more focused and firmly established at the process, machine or factory levels. This project proposes a structure for manufacturing with a main objective to develop a sustainability framework which encompasses various production processes. Structured information models for the seamless flow of information across the design and manufacturing domains, for selected manufacturing processes, are defined. The thesis work identifies key performance indicators (KPIs) for the assessment of manufacturing sustainability and performs analysis of selected unit manufacturing processes and their sub-processes with the aim of proposing a methodology for determining science-based measurements of the manufacturing processes affecting these KPIs. The theoretical foundations established are then used to develop a model that could evaluate sustainability of selected manufacturing processes and their respective process plans providing a basis for inter-process comparison and selection of the most sustainable process plan. The proposed framework is presented in form of a manufacturing planning computer-based package which is designed to to consider different influencing factors such as product information, part geometry, material related physical and processing properties and the manufacturing equipment operating data. The thesis presents a number of case studies which have been published in international journals. The case studies present estimates of the manufacturing sustainability KPIs for a number of production methods. These estimates have been verified with available shop floor data. The work in the thesis makes it possible to establish manufacturing industry equipped to deal the challenges of the future when sustainability will be the major factor up on which the quality of success will be determined.

▼ The purposes of this qualitative multiple case study were to determine the catalysts and pathways that caused principals to move from managers to effective leaders. Data were collected through a series of interviews with 4 principals who were selected through a purposeful sampling procedure. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using inductive coding to determine themes. Findings were presented for each theme within the context of reviewed literature.
National polls indicate that 6 out of every 10 of the nation’s schools need major changes or an overhaul. Can improving the skills of their leaders make a difference in the performance of these schools? Research repeatedly supports the importance of a principal’s leadership to the overall success of a school. It also tells us that effective leadership is in short supply and that there is a need to initiate leadership development. The underlying task in this study was to determine how to help those who want or need to become better principals or how they can help themselves.
Several themes emerged from data analysis, and each is important to consider when working on improving principals’ leadership abilities: the impact of mentors; university administrative certification programs; on the job experience; personal motivation; tacit knowledge; state, local, and private leadership development programs; and pathways to improvement. Specific recommendations for practices to improve principals’ overall effectiveness included incorporating more and lengthier mentoring in the early part of principals’ careers or as part of performance improvement plans; increasing study of cultural and instructional leadership in administrative certification programs; providing more field experiences in administrative certification programs; and developing individualized leadership improvement plans based on needs, interests, and learning styles of principals. The need for additional quantitative and qualitative research was also suggested.
