Empati är en viktig del i vårdande yrken då den har visat sig ha en positiv inverkan på patienternas utfall. Tidigare studier har däremot funnit att empatin hos studenter vid vårdutbildningar sjunker efter utbildningspraktiken. Det finns dock en brist av studier gjorda på psykologstudenter vilket denna studie ämnar att bidra med. Denna studie utformades därmed för att undersöka inställning till empati bland psykologstudenter utifrån tre frågeställningar. För det första ämnade studien att undersöka om det fanns skillnader i skattad inställning till empati beroende på vilket år av utbildningen psykologstudenten befann sig i. För det andra undersöktes om det förelåg skillnader mellan kön i skattad inställning till empati. Slutligen undersöktes en möjlig interaktionseffekt mellan kön och år i utbildningen för inställning till empati. Deltagarna bestod av psykologstudenter från år 1 (n=65), år 3 (n=68) och år 5 (n=36) vid Umeå Universitet. En reviderad version av instrumentet Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy Student version (JSPE-S) användes för att mäta studenternas inställning till empati och frågeställningarna besvarades genom en tvåvägs-ANOVA. Resultatet visade en signifikant ökning av inställning till empati mellan år 1 och år 3 i utbildningen. Kvinnor skattade signifikant högre än männen och det förelåg inte någon interaktionseffekt mellan år i utbildning och kön. Sammanfattningsvis tycks psykologutbildningen vara gynnsam vad gäller utvecklingen av inställning till empati i början av utbildningen.

Empathy plays an important part in health professions as it has been shown to have positive health and clinical outcomes for patients. However, previous studies has found a decline in empathy in health professional students after the clinical practice phase. No previous studies has examined psychology students attitude towards empathy which this study aims to. This study was therefore constructed in order to examine psychology students attitude towards empathy through three main research questions. Firstly, the study aimed to examine whether psychology students rated attitude towards empathy differently depending on which year the student was enrolled in. Secondly, the study examined if any differences in attitude towards empathy was present depending on gender. Finally, the study examined a possible interaction effect between gender and year of education for attitude towards empathy. The sample of the study consisted of psychology students from year 1 (n=65), year 2 (n=68) and year 5 (n=36) at Umeå Universitet. A modified version of the instrument Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy Student version (JSPE-S) was used to measure the students attitude towards empathy and the main research questions was answered by a two-way ANOVA. ▼ Studies have shown that white matter changes and other neuropathology frequently found in individuals with dementia, also may be related to late-life depression, or "vascular dementia." As these two conditions frequently coexist, the question of whether there is a relationship between these neuropathological changes and depression among individuals with manifest dementia has not been established. The aim of the present study was to examine whether there were neuroanatomical differences evident on the CT scans of individuals with dementia based upon depression onset (no depression versus early-onset versus late-onset) and history of late-life depression (any episode of depression after age 60). We hypothesized that individuals with dementia and late-onset depression and/or late-life depression would be more likely than non-depressed individuals with dementia to exhibit frontal lobe deep white matter, subcortical white matter, and subcortical gray matter hypodensities. We found that compared to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and no depression, individuals with Alzheimer's disease and late-onset depression had a greater number of striatal hypodensities (gray matter hypodensities in the caudate nucleus and lentiform nucleus, which includes the putamen and globis pallidus). In addition, we found that although there were no differences between the non-depressed and late-onset and late-life depression groups with respect to white matter hypodensities, the late-onset depression and late-life depression groups in comparison to the non-depressed group displayed a significantly higher degree of global functional impairment, as well as impairment within the domains of memory, orientation, and in the context of their home activities and hobbies. These findings suggest that late-onset depression may be a process that is distinct from the neurodegenerative changes caused by Alzheimer's disease. ▼ The purpose of this study was to develop behavior by the pigeon illustrative of S+ and S- rules and to examine if behavior consistent with a concept rule interpretation developed. In order to examine this possibility six groups of pigeons (N=31) were provided different histories of autoshaping. Histories involved the identity of the color of the lighted center key and one side key of three horizontally mounted pigeon keys. Center key onset was followed three seconds later by onset of either outer key. Outer key onset was followed six seconds later by food presentation (explicitly paired) or 45 seconds later, during the inter-trial interval (explicitly unpaired). The foregoing reinforcement conditions were factored into two stimulus conditions, one where the center and side keys were lit by the same hue (identity) and one where the center and side key were lit by different hues (nonidentity). Two groups received identity stimulus sequences with explicitly unpaired food presentation. Two groups were exposed to nonidentity stimulus sequences with explicitly unpaired food presentation. One group received sessions combining exposure to both the explicitly paired identity and explicitly unpaired nonidentity trials. One group received no pretraining. Following pretraining, all birds were placed in a simultaneous matching-to-sample task utilizing the same hues used during pretraining. After reaching criterion on matching-to-sample, on a random ratio 3 schedule of reinforcement, birds were exposed to transfer tests, with a novel hue, to assess for S+ rules, S- rules, and a concept rule. The results indicated that there were no significant differences among groups in terms of their acquisition of matching-to-sample or in terms of their performance on transfer tests. All birds' responding during transfer conditions provided evidence of S+ rules, but neither demonstration of S- rules nor concept rule performance was evidenced. During autoshaping, birds in the identity, explicitly paired groups responded primarily to the center key, suggesting that the stimulus on the outer key was not a salient stimulus for the identity discrimination. For birds in the nonidentity, explicitly unpaired groups neither the center nor outer key controlled responding. For the group combining identity, explicitly paired and nonidentity, explicitly unpaired trials, the birds failed to form a discrimination between types of trials. Advisors/Committee Members: J. ▼ The present study examined Gottfredson's theory (1981) of vocational development, which suggests that occupational preferences and occupational stereotypes are influenced firstly by sex-typing, between the ages of six and eight, and secondly by social background, between the ages of nine and thirteen. A large, heterogenous sample (396) of New Zealand school pupils, aged between five and fourteen were asked about the occupations they would like to do, using free and forced choice formats, and these responses were then tested for their relationship with gender, age, parental socio-economic status and ability. A forced choice Occupational Card Sort, comprising 15 occupations, was used to measure sex-type and status dimensions of occupational stereotypes and effects for age and gender were investigated. Data were analysed using discriminant analysis and contingency analysis. Results indicated that gender was a strong influence on the sex-typing of occupational preferences and occupational stereotypes from the age of five (younger than the age suggested by Gottfredson), with males demonstrating more rigid sex-typing than females. Consistent with Gottfredson's theory, socio-economic background and ability were significant influences on status level of occupational preferences for respondents aged over nine years, with results suggesting that ability had a more direct influence on the status level of occupational preferences than did parental socio-economic status. The developmental pattern for the formation of occupational stereotypes was not as predicted by Gottfredson's theory, as both the sex-type and status level elements of occupational stereotypes were evident from the age of five. Results further suggested a weakening of sex-typing of occupational stereotypes with increasing age. The inconsistencies of present findings with Gottfredson's theory were discussed in the context of previous research and the developmental literature, and the usefulness of the theory in relation to occupational choice was evaluated. Implications of the present findings for careers awareness and education programmes were considered. It was concluded that Gottfredson's theory provides a useful framework for examining early vocational development, but that the failure of the theory to explain deviant developmental patterns limits the theory's explanatory power. It was suggested that the theory's usefulness would be enhanced by recognising the impact of environmental influences such as campaigns to encourage women into non-traditional careers and by incorporating more psychological influences such as self-cognitions.

▼ Crosscultural differences in dementia diagnosis and care-seeking merit more attention as the booming older adult population becomes increasingly diverse. I aimed to examine differences in clinicians’ assessment of dementia as well as diagnostic delays and impairment levels across 444 Hispanic and 11,081 non-Hispanic White (NHW) outpatients diagnosed with normal cognition or dementia at their initial Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers evaluations. Results revealed that informant reports of patients’ behavioral and psychological symptoms were significantly associated with diagnosis in NHWs only. Informant-reported functional abilities may be more strongly related to diagnosis in Hispanics as opposed to neuropsychological test performance (NP) in NHWs. I also found evidence for the crosscultural factorial invariance of these two informant-report scales and scalar invariance for one of them. Additionally, Hispanics with dementia were significantly more impaired in NP than their NHW counterparts when using combined ethnic-group norms, but the opposite pattern emerged with ethnic group-specific norms. Finally, in a subsample of 22 Hispanic informants, lower literacy and education levels were associated with less accurate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) knowledge, whereas stronger Hispanic acculturation levels were related to more cultural beliefs about AD. In a subsample of 120 NHW informants, higher AD knowledge levels were related to poorer NP in patients. In sum, these findings bear importance regarding crosscultural diagnostic validity as clinicians may weigh certain NP tests and informant reports differentially across Hispanics and NHWs during the diagnostic process. Moreover, both informant scales can be used meaningfully among these groups, as they have similar factor structures and loadings across cultures. Finally, higher AD knowledge levels among NHW informants may be related to patients’ poorer NP perhaps because informants learn more about dementia as patients’ cognitive symptoms progress.
