数種類の材料から構成される複合型の微粒子(複合粒子)は、新規および既存の機能を持つ新素材、新製品を設計する上で、欠くことのできない材料として認知されている。複合粒子が発現する性質を利用することで、記録・表示材料をはじめ、薬物送達、食品などの様々な分野で活用が期待されている。一方、単一素材の単純な組み合わせでは、物性や品質の制御が困難な製品への応用も考えられる。このような背景から、複合粒子に要求される機能や特性が応用分野の広がりとともに細分化したため、複合粒子の調製技術や物性評価等の基礎研究が未だに重要視されている。本論文では、有機ポリマーをベースとしたミクロンオーダーの複合粒子、特に有機-無機系の複合粒子に注目した。具体的には、ハイブリダイゼーション法、懸濁重合法、もしくは液中乾燥法で調製したポリマーベースの複合粒子について、配合やプロセス等の調製条件が、粒子形状、内部組織および熱的、機械的特性に及ぼす影響を調査することを目的とした。 第1章では、緒論として、複合粒子が潜在的に持つ特性、複合粒子の様々な調製方法および研究目的等の本論文の背景について述べた。 第2章では、ハイブリダイゼーション法で調製したコア/シェル型カルボニル鉄-フェライト/ポリメチルメタクリレート(PMMA)複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体に関して、GHz帯領域の周波数を持つ電磁波の吸収特性について述べた。カルボニル鉄/PMMA複合体は、複合体厚さを変化させることで、2.0-5.0 GHzの領域において、電磁波吸収量99%に該当する-20 dB以下の反射損失を示すが、カルボニル鉄をフェライトに適量置換した場合、複合体内部の材料定数(複素誘電率及び複素透磁率)が変化するため、99%以上の吸収帯領域が高周波数側(5.0-13.0 GHz)へシフトした。つまり、カルボニル鉄-フェライトの混合割合および複合体の厚さを変化させることで、2.0-13.0 GHzの領域で、99%以上の電磁波を吸収する5 mm以下の電磁波吸収性複合体の設計が可能となった。さらに本複合体は、成形の際にバインダー材を必要とせず、複合粒子のみの集合体であるため、電磁波吸収性物質が偏析することなくミクロンオーダーで分散した均一な組織を形成する。その結果、複合体内部で特性のばらつきが非常に少なく、吸収特性はシミュレーションの値と実測の値が良く一致する。これらの結果は、シミュレーションによる簡便な製品設計を可能にすると考えられる。 第3章では、塊状-懸濁2段階重合法で調製したポリスチレン(PS)/疎水化水酸化マグネシウム(ST-1)複合粒子とその複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体の内部組織及び熱的、機械的特性について述べた。予備的な塊状重合プロセスの導入、PSマトリックスへの無水マレイン酸の添加によって、複合粒子中のST-1の含有量が配合量とほぼ等しく、かつ分散性に優れた多核型構造の球状複合粒子を設計できた。また、これらの複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体は、無水マレイン酸を含むPSマトリックスとST-1の親和性が高いため、界面に大きな空隙が極めて少なく、高い難燃性を示した。第4章では、液中乾燥法によるST-1もしくは5種類の異なる機能性フィラーを含有した多核型PS系複合粒子について報告した。簡便な液中乾燥法によって、ST-1の配合量と含有量がほぼ等しく、かつST-1の分散性も極めて高いPS/ST-1複合粒子を調製できた。それら複合粒子の圧縮強度は、ST-1添加の有無及び添加量に関わらず、ほぼ等しい値を示した。一方、5種類の異なる機能性フィラーを含有した球状に近いPS系複合粒子も、液中乾燥法によって調製できた。それぞれの機能性フィラーは、粒子内部で偏析することなく、比較的均一に分散して存在していた。第5章では、環境に負荷の少ない溶媒を用いた液中乾燥法によるポリエチレン(PE)系複合粒子とその複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体について報告した。1:1の体積割合で混合したシクロヘキサン-ヘプタン混合溶媒を用いることで、球状に近く、かつST-1を多く含有したミクロンオーダーのPE/ST-1複合粒子の調製が可能となった。従来、環境負荷の大きい溶媒に限定されていた液中乾燥法によるPE系複合粒子の調製に新たな可能性を示したものとして、環境負荷を軽減した本技法の提案の意義は大きい。また、PE/ST-1複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体内部のST-1は、混錬を行わなくても、ミクロンオーダーで分散していた。第6章では、総括として本研究で得られた結果をまとめた。本論文では、各種有機-無機系の複合粒子を調製し、それら複合粒子の内部組織、熱的および機械的特性、さらに、それら複合粒子を用いて成形した複合体の諸特性を明らかにすることで、複合粒子が製品を構成する基盤の配合材となり得る可能性を示した。
