本研究は身体領域から時空間領域への意味拡張と、その言語的現象に働くメカニズムを考察することを目的としている。身体基盤経験主義に元づき、Heine Svorouの方法を援用して、日常生活における身体経験がいかにして言語的概念化に反映されるかを考察する。データの分析により、英語、日本語、スペイン語における言語固有性と共通性を示す。この研究では、身体部位は大きく3つに分類される: 人体の外的部位、人体の内的部位、動植物に特有の部位である。取集したデータから、外的部位は内的部位と比べて、より多くの時空間領域へ拡張している表現が見られた。これは外的部位が外的環境において事物に働きかける特性があるためである。一方、内的部位は、少数の空間的意味の事例があるが、時間的意味の拡張はほとんど見られなかった。
