▼ Contemporary political theorists have tended to ignore
the question of
parental authority in their exploration of the
nature and origins of political authority. Nevertheless, seminal
thinkers in the social contract tradition such as Hobbes and Locke
dedicated significant attention to the relationship between
parental and political authority. My dissertation aims to revive
the idea that the question of
parental authority is philosophically
relevant to the question of political authority, and vice versa.
Thinking about
parental authority in the light of political
authority, I argue that we discover that the duration and scope of
parental authority is surprisingly more limited than we may have
thought. And in thinking about political authority in the light of
parental authority, I argue that we discover ways to solve problems
that arise from the contemporary emphasis on consent as the moral
foundation of political authority.

This report is based on an analysis of a professionalizing internship Master’s degree in preschool education. The changes noticed in the society and family structures have consequences on the children scholarship. In this way, on the notion that it is necessary to turn the kindergarten into an open space where everybody is involved, parents/family were considered fundamental elements of intervention in the educational process of the children. In this sense, numerous theoretical studies were led in the aim of providing a theoretical structure which will help the educational practice experienced. This work was based on the observation completed with data got by the observation and reflection during the school-year, allowing to adapt the educational practice. This investigation effort permitted to know the contribution of the parental involvement in the development of a 4-year-old group, and its importance on the children development. We used a methodology of quality resorting to semi structure interview. ▼ This study addresses the critical issue of
parental involvement in the educational
process. Educational research overwhelmingly reveals the importance of
parental
involvement for students. In addition, education theorists and national education goals
mandated by legislators conclude that
parental involvement is essential to increased
student learning. The purpose of this study was to identify the beliefs of assistant
principals regarding
parental involvement. The results of this study will add to what is
known about the views and practices of assistant principals. It additionally will provide
useful information that can be distributed at professional development sessions for
educational leaders as they prepare to become the future leaders of tomorrow.
This qualitative survey research used open-ended questions and responses to
supplement the research findings emphasizing the need for
parental involvement in the
educational process. The data supports the literature in finding that
parental involvement
is crucial because it contributes to increased academic achievement in schools. Effective
parental involvement is significant because the role of the educator is changing
drastically due to government policies such as No Child Left Behind (2002). Both the
literature and the survey results indicate the often unmet need for
parental involvement
programs on campuses. The findings in this study not only add to the literature, but they
can practically inform campus administrators and school districts as a whole.

▼ In order for educators to increase
parental involvement and to better improve student success, teachers need the proper training and assistance on different methods they can use to increase
parental involvement. Due to the lack of support and resources, teachers are forced to find solutions without the proper guidance. It is important that teachers have easily ready accessible solutions to combat this difficulty that is effecting many elementary schools. If this issue is not addressed with teachers, our students will suffer because of the lack of
parental support they have in the household. To help teachers, I have created a webpage that includes supplemental information and multiple resources teachers can use to increase
parental involvement in the classroom and the overall school community.

▼ Education accountability has risen due to the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) legislation, and practitioners are working harder, and with more creativity, than at any other time in recent history to find ways to improve student achievement. If a school fails to meet what has been determined to be "adequate yearly progress" (AYP), a mandated set of prescriptive guidelines, requirements and sanctions, are imposed by the government. One of these requirements is that an improvement plan be developed and approved by the department of education. This plan must include a listing of policies and procedures that define how the school will improve and increase the involvement of its parents and community.
The involvement of parents in the education of their children has been shown to have a significant impact on the student's achievement in school. Improving
parental involvement has become an increasingly evident theme in federal legislation over the last two decades. NCLB and other educational legislation require the adoption of parent involvement policies that will build the schools' and the parents' capacity to work together.
Since a great number of high schools are preparing these improvement plans, now is an advantageous time for gathering information on programs, activities, and initiatives being instituted by high schools that are improving the number, as well as the quality, of the parents' involvement in the education of their high school age children. Idea sharing, brainstorming, and heated debate are happening any time two or more educators get together.
The work of this study will be to survey high school principals, teachers, and involved parents, to determine what, in this fertile and active education environment, is working to increase the amount and quality of parent involvement at the high school level. This information will add to the body of collective educational tools used to increase the quantity and quality of
parental involvement practices at the secondary level. Special attention will be given to
parental involvement programs that are proving effective in districts facing the added educational and social challenges that arise from poverty.

▼ Studies have discovered barriers that prevent parents from feeding children nutritiously. There is sparse information about whether parents intentionally feed their children functional foods, raising the question of whether there are barriers that inhibit parents when feeding their children nutritiously. This study of parents in two Mississippi school districts in 2015 ( n=193) examined the barriers parents face to consuming health-promoting, functional foods as well as the relation of these barriers to feeding their children functional foods. The age group 45–54 was less likely to perceive taste as a barrier (p<.05) to consuming functional foods, while individuals with some college education (p<.05) and individuals with an associate degree (p<.05) were more likely to perceive taste as a barrier. Additionally, the age group 55+ was less likely to perceive availability of food as a barrier (p<.01). Lastly, the females were more likely than males to perceive knowledge as a barrier ; lack of knowledge of foods’ health benefits was significant for the female gender (p<.05) to consuming functional foods. This study also found a significant relationship between parent’s lack of knowledge of health-promoting foods when feeding their children functional foods for specific health benefits. The findings concluded that parents who perceived lack of knowledge as a barrier to consuming functional foods, were more likely to feed their children foods with health benefits for cancer prevention (p<.01), heart health ( p<.05), and other health benefits (p<.01), while not for bone, digestive, and weight health. Further investigation showed that foods beneficial for cancer prevention, heart health, and other health benefits are among food items incorporated in children’s diets through foods such as fruits, vegetables, fortified foods/beverages, etc.

▼ M.A. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2014.
This project investigates the interplay between parent beliefs about children's learning, verbal and non-verbal teaching strategies, and children's learning outcomes. Study 1 found differences in parent beliefs about how children learn across cultural contexts, learning domains, and SES. Study 2 was an experimental manipulation, which asked parents to teach 4-year-olds a sorting rule using either verbal or non-verbal methods (each parent did both conditions). Parent beliefs about development and children's learning outcomes were also measured. Parents who more strongly endorsed the idea that children learn from those around them used more direct teaching strategies; this relationship was strengthened when parental beliefs in the efficacy of verbal teaching strategies (over non-verbal strategies) were also examined. Interestingly, parents who believed children learned best by constructing their own knowledge had children who performed better on the outcome measure; however, this relationship was mediated by parents' use of controlling teaching strategies. Results underscore the importance of examining the nuances of cultural context, parent beliefs, learning domains, teaching strategies, and children's outcomes when deciding how to best teach children.

▼ In recent years,
parental involvement has become the focus of attention for many researchers interested in investigating factors that influence academic achievement. While there are many possible reasons for this continued interest, it is important to continuously re-evaluate the factors that influence academic progress as a means of reducing social inequality and narrowing the gap between rich and poor. In addition, family structure and the factors that inhibit or enhance
parental involvement are undergoing constant change. The purpose of this study is to replicate an earlier study, Effects of
Parental Involvement and Family Structure on the Academic Achievement of Adolescents (Jeynes, 2005), that found that many types of
parental involvement are positively correlated with the child???s academic achievement.
Sources of Data
In addition to a substantial review of the current literature on the
subject of
parental involvement, family structure, and academic achievement, the main sources of data used in the development and production of this thesis are the National Education Longitudinal Study 1988-2000, and the Education Longitudinal Study 2002-2004.
Conclusions Reached
The results of this study are consistent with the findings in the original study and lend credence to the ideas that intact family structure and certain types of
parental involvement have positive effects on academic achievement. Moreover, the consistency in scores may indicate that living with both biological parents ??? even in cases where divorce is the eventual outcome ??? is associated with higher test scores in comparison to situations where the parents are never married. Regarding specific elements of
parental involvement, parents checking-up on their students??? academic activities is associated with statistically significant, negative effects. On the other hand, parents who discuss school classes, activities, and things studied, and parents who attend school related events and activities are associated with statistically significant, positive effects on academic achievement. The largest positive effect on academic achievement is associated with socioeconomic status (SES).

▼ The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between
parental child rearing,
practices and values with children’s academic achievement. The study was carried out in case of
a Wereda in Raya-Alamata that is found in the Southern Zone of Tigray Regional National State.
A mixed method approach was used to supplement the quantitative data. Qualitative data was
collected through interviewing the key informants and focus group discussions, while
quantitative data was collected through questionnaire surveys. The findings of the data analysis
showed that the family size and
parental income were not significantly related with the students’
academic achievement. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the students’ academic
achievement due to the educational levels of the parents, whereas there was a significant
difference result in students’ academic achievement the occupational types of the parents.
Moreover, the results showed that there was a significant relationship between the variable of
parental values and children’s academic achievement. This showed that
parental values had a
positive and significant relationship with children’s academic achievement. On the other hand,
among the child rearing variables namely
parental nurturance,
parental responsiveness and
parental control were significantly and positively related with the children’s academic
achievement, whereas there was no significant relationship between the
parental consistency and
the children’s academic achievement. Accordingly, it could be concluded that the occupational
types of the parents were found out to be the most important underlying factors together with the
proximate factors that contributed to the children’s academic achievement. Generally speaking,
based on the findings of the study, conclusions were drawn; suggestions and recommendations
were made for the parents, the school teachers, the community, the concerned governmental
institutions and non-governmental organizations

Parental Alienation is a phenomenon that reaches more parents and children all over the world. That phenomenon was discovered by Richard Gardner, in 198, as the phenomenon whereby the child suffers a brainwashing by de alienating parent, in order to break the bonds of affection with the alienated parent. This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of parental alienation in the perspective of the alienated parents. This research aims to extend studies have made and reinforces what we intend to analyze the position of the alienated parent. Our general purpose is the analysis of the phenomenon of parental alienation through the perceptions conceived by alienated parents. Thirteen questionnaire surveys and four semi-structured interview were applied . From the results, it was concluded that there it is not necessary to have a marital conflict to exist a parental conflict. Other strategies are described by the participants: programming and manipulation of children against another parent , make a disqualification to the other parent , privation of contact between the alienated parent and child and privation of special information about the life of children .
This work is part of the Masters in Education Sciences with specialization in Special Education, and it aims to investigate how an organized parental involvement, aware of the duties determines and influences the development of behaviors and attitudes in their children. We focus on the organization of the family as a system influenced by several subsystems, which act in the family cycle. We approach the notion of parentality, the involvement that parents have with their children (between the age of eight and ten), the type of relationship and its influence on the development of parental stress; with an assessment of the latter. We analyze some behavioral disorders and the capacity that the individual has to accept adversities (resilience). We realize that parents want to share their anguish, insecurity and need training in order to consciously, and with fascination, recognize their function and have a better, and more effective, understanding of their children.

The validity of the following dissertation is based upon the exploration of both stressing
and satisfaction factors in parenthood, specifically to divorced fathers with children in preschool.
So, in a effort to comprehend both the perception and the significance of divorced fathers
when faced with these factors, it was performed a study pertaining these particular
characteristics.
After an interview was created, five semi-open interviews were conducted and its
contents were analysed through a category system, built with N Vivo 9.
Upon the goal analysis of the present study these were the results:
The satisfaction factors mentioned by the fathers may be divided in factors directly
concerning the father/child relationship, (1) their bond (their complicity and their alone-time)
and the appreciation the child shows towards the father; (2) the father's role as a guide, and the
satisfaction one has in teaching someone; (3) their ability to perform their role as parents; (4) and
then, there are the external factors to the familiar context, such as academic performance and the
recognition of the father's role by other people like friends and neighbours.
The stressing factors mentioned by the fathers are (1) the child's individual
characteristics, like the temper tantrums; (2) the fact that the parent may be unsure, uncertain
pertaining his decisions and actions, as well as feel as if his not in control of the situation; (3) the
parenting styles, the ambivalence; (4) the existence of routine, such as dinner and bedtime; (5)
the existence of…

▼ Play is a universal and innate disposition that is believed to be one of the most significant components to holistic wellbeing and development during the foundational years of childhood. Research and literature examining the topic of play in early childhood suggests that while unstructured and child directed play is valued, its existence is under threat. Instead, it is being replaced by structured, educational, and adult directed activities which aim to accelerate young children’s learning. Due to these conflicting paradigms, and a lack of research exploring
parental values in this area, this quantitative study examined
parental perceptions towards structured and unstructured play for children under the age of three years.
In order to investigate this topic, 255 New Zealand parents, with children not in full-time childcare and under the age of three years, participated in an anonymous online survey. The survey was designed specifically for this study due to a lack of pre-existing measures. The main finding was that
parental perception influenced the way in which infants and toddlers spent their time. The majority of parents perceived unstructured play to best support early development and, consequently, offered children a large amount of daily time to become involved in freely chosen unstructured play. The study also identified that: the more weekly activities a child engaged in, the higher structured play was valued by parents; older parents did not value structured play as highly as younger parents; parents with a tertiary level qualification valued unstructured play more than those parents with a school qualification or less; screen time was perceived to be more appropriate the older the child. These findings were discussed in relation to the implications they raise for the role of the parent, early childhood education, parent education, and child development and wellbeing.

▼ This document proposes a study to further understand the relevance of addressing
parental accommodation in the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders and further evaluate the value of involving parents in treatment. Research looking at youth with OCD has examined the impact of addressing accommodation with parents during treatment, but no studies to date have looked at targeting
parental accommodation when treating youth with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and Social Phobia. Additionally, although there have been a number of studies that have looked at generally including parents in CBT interventions for anxiety, there have been mixed results on its impact and benefit. Therefore the purpose of this present study is to understand the relationship between accommodation and anxiety in the context of treatment. The study involves gathering data from a sample of anxiety-disordered youth and their parents, who are participating in an ongoing intervention study that compares CBT with a parent component to child-only CBT. It is hypothesized that by addressing accommodation with parents in CBT treatment through a parent-training component, the number of accommodating behaviors will be reduced, and that this reduction in accommodation will be correlated with improvements in child treatment outcomes.

▼ The present study examined the relations among maternal psychological control, maternal acceptance, maternal acculturation and youth anxiety within the framework of a (partially) moderated mediation model. The sample consisted of 535 Hispanic-Latino youth (46% girls;
M = 9.79 years) and their mothers. The study’s data were analyzed using structural equation modeling in the MPlus statistical software program.
Results indicated that maternal psychological control and youth anxiety are significantly and positively related. Results also indicated that more acculturated mothers were more psychologically controlling than less acculturated mothers. Results further provided evidence for a partial mediational role of maternal psychological control on the relation between maternal acculturation and youth anxiety symptoms. In addition, there was a direct, positive relation between maternal acculturation and youth anxiety symptoms. No significant findings were observed regarding the moderating role of maternal acceptance on the relation between maternal psychological control and youth anxiety. The findings’ theoretical and clinical implications are further discussed.

▼ Parental responsivity can profoundly influence developmental trajectories and child outcomes. This study aimed to learn more about the contextual risk and protective factors that influence
parental self-efficacy (PSE), depression, parenting stress, and subsequent
parental responsivity in low-income mothers of preschoolers. Two models predicting responsivity were tested using longitudinal data (N = 307) from the Early Steps Multisite Study. Predictors included: parent ethnic discrimination, SES discrimination, neighborhood danger, satisfaction with social support, overall life satisfaction, neighborhood connectedness, PSE, depression, and parenting stress related to daily hassles.
Structural equation modeling was used to test for overall model fit, as well as direct and indirect relations between the variables over three time points. Model 1 controlled for maternal depression, while Model 2 incorporated maternal depression into the model as a predictor at Time 1. Two post hoc models that included depression at two time points were also tested. Models 1 and 2 adequately fit the data, while the post hoc models fit the data very well. Results indicated that discrimination and perceptions of danger in the neighborhood were related to lower satisfaction with social support, lower overall life satisfaction, and lower feelings of connectedness with the neighborhood. Adverse factors also predicted maternal responsivity at Time 3. Protective factors were predictive of high PSE and responsivity over time. Earlier experiences of depression were predictive of parenting stress and depression over time. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

The present study is to explore the paternal involvement in children aged between 3 and 5. The main objective is: to determine whether, at present, we notice a father more involved and closer to his children, and if there is an increase in the sharing of parental tasks by both parents; to understand the role of the father and how he perceives in relation to the role played; and to understand if there are any relationships between the study variables, feelings of competence and perceived effectiveness of parental tasks with parental involvement. The study analysed 507 two-parent families with children attending nursery schools. Th e gathering of data was carried out through an Identification Form and Socio-demographic Characterisation and three questionnaires: Parental Involvement Scale, Scale of Parental Sense of Competence and Perception Scale of Effectiveness of Parental Tasks.
Maroco (2006).

This study aims to contribute for the understanding of the relationship between
Parental Satisfaction and Parental Bonding in the father figure.
No studies were found to date that establish the relationship between the two
proposed dimensions, Parental Bonding and Parental Satisfaction, particularly in terms of
the masculine father figure.
We focused the study on the father figure since its importance is continuously and
more importantly recognised and valued in the development of progeny.
The study included 155 male participants who were contacted by telephone and
voluntarily agreed to answer to the material made available on line.
The tools used were far beyond the socio-demographic characterization
questionnaire, the Parent Satisfaction Scale (PSS – Parent Satisfaction Scale from
Halverson and Duke, 1991, Martins & Leal (2007) and the Parental Bonding Instrument,
(PBI – Parental Bonding Instrument from Parker, Tupling and Brown, (1979), Ramos,
Leal and Maroco (2006).
The following results are emphasized: parents with a professional active life reveal
care perceptions and autonomy denial and, the lowest and the highest wage levels
influence the burden and the importance of parentality. The perception of psychological
autonomy denial has a significant weight in parents without a conjugal situation. Lastly,
we confirm that the absence of chronic…

The entry of women into the labor market has led to changes in the organization and expectations about parental roles of Portuguese families. Therefore, new parental roles and a new family model of co-parenting, in which both parents should equally share tasks and responsibilities in the family domain, have emerged. The expanded role of the father and his involvement was crucial to help the mother. This study examines the management of work-family contexts (both benefits and constraints) through the mother’s perspective, and the possible associations with the degree and type of the father’s involvement in the child’s care and socialization activities. For this purpose, two questionnaires were applied to 90 Portuguese mothers on the conciliation of family and work contexts, and on parental involvement. This sample’s results indicate that benefits and constraints of maternal management in work and family contexts are not related to the father’s involvement. The parents’ number of working hours is correlated with constraints in work and family context management and influence the occurrence of interference between contexts, as well as participation in the indirect care, teaching and parent involvement dimensions.
This study uses 2007-2012 data from Quadros de Pessoal and a difference-in-differences methodology to analyze the effects of the increase in parental leave benefits introduced in 2009 by the revision of the Labor Code and Decree-Law 91/2009. Results show a persistent statistically significant negative effect of the policy, pointing to a 3.6% reduction of the hourly wages for the individuals targeted by the legislation. There is evidence of a larger effect for individuals with more qualifications, as well as for those with more years of schooling. Findings are consistent with the model of mandated benefits, as the increase in employer costs is shifted to wages. Results are robust to the use of different specifications of periods and groups.
