An Examination of Attachment Styles and Distress Among Parents Who Have Lost a Child to CancerPhilip M. Domingue, Ph.D.Director: Karlynn BrintzenhofeSzoc, Ph.D.This study of bereaved parents whose child died of cancer, investigated how retrospective insecure attachment and social support impact both the individual and the couple in dimensions of marital satisfaction, grief, and psychological distress. The impact of levels of discrepancy in retrospective attachment styles between spouses, on marital satisfaction, grief, psychological distress, and social support were examined. The study also explored the impact of insecure attachment and social support on grief oscillation (ref: Dual Processing Model of Grief) (DPM). The study utilized a cross- sectional correlational survey design. Couples bereaved in the last five years, still living together at diagnosis of deceased child, were invited to participate through support organizations such as Candlelighters in both the U.S. and Canada. The survey consisted of seven standardized tools: Retrospective Attachment Questionnaire (RAQ), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC), Texas Revised Inventory of Grief (TRIG), Inventory of Daily Widowed Life (IDWL), and Social Support Index (SSI)). Demographic data was also collected. The sample consisted of 86 individual and 32 couples. The data was analysed using SPSSS and multivariate analysis of three hypotheses were performed. Results showed mixed support for all three hypotheses. Insecure attachment was a stronger predictor of grief, than gender. Insecure attachment and social support were both predictors of psychological distress. Retrospective attachment style was not a significant predictor of marital satisfaction/distress however, the control variable gender and social support were. Discrepancy of anxious ambivalent attachment in the couple increased the level of social support. An interaction between discrepancy in disorganized attachment and gender impacted levels of grief. In terms of oscillation balance of grief insecure attachment was the only significant predictor with social support trending. This study supports aspect of the DPM, specifically the claim that attachment styles have an impact on individual and to some extent on couples grieving outcomes. The findings support the DPM concept of oscillation balance and that loss and resolution orientations are separate grieving tasks. Retrospective attachment was stronger predictor of grief than gender. Researchers and clinicians should consider retrospective attachment styles as an important variable in grief.

▼ The purpose of this multi-case study was to explore classroom teachers' and school counselors' perceptions of multi-varied
grief manifestations present from elementary students, ages 6-12, after the death of their primary caregiver(s). The second purpose of this multi-case study was to describe how the multi-varied
grief responses of students were compounded and/or comprehended by educational personnel in the school environment. This study utilized unstructured, open-ended question interviews to gather qualitative data of multi-case studies. All case studies focused on the phenomenon of
grief manifestations of elementary age children and their effect on the school environment as perceived by educational personnel. The cases for this study were bounded together by time and place with the death of the students' primary caregiver occurring within the last 24 months. Three major overarching themes emerged from this study:
1. School counseling services are the main source of support for grieving students and their families in the school environment. 2. School counselors and classroom teachers indicated that students'
grief was inconsistent with the "normal" moods and behaviors observed prior to the student's death experience. 3. School counselors and classroom teachers indicated a wide array of manifestations of
grief within bereaved children, which included behaviors, physical sensations, and feelings (Worden, 2009).

▼ This qualitative study aimed to hear the subjective lived experiences of adults who experienced parental death during adolescence in order to gain insight into how their experience has impacted them from adolescence to adulthood. The findings from this research endeavour to contribute to a theoretical understanding of this experience and highlight the clinical implications for Counselling Psychologists working with individuals who have experienced parental death during adolescence. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was the methodological design used to facilitate an understanding of how participants make sense of their experience. Seven participants were recruited via a purposive snowball sampling method. Participants spoke about their experiences of parental death from adolescence to adulthood in 45-50-minute semi-structured telephone interviews which were then transcribed and analysed. The Findings illuminated the following four superordinate themes, Managing Emotions, Interpersonal Changes, Complex Grief and Positive Changes. Participants appeared to have an impaired ability to manage and regulate their emotions relying instead on maladaptive coping and defence mechanisms to attenuate their emotions. This could be attributed to their difficulties with grief expression, lack of support in both aiding their grief and helping the development of these regulatory skills. Emotional regulatory difficulties could also be symptomatic of their unique developmental period. Participants appear to exhibit an array of symptoms pertaining to the diagnosis of Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder (DSM-5, 2013) and Prolonged Grief Disorder (ICD-11r, 2018). Participants reported experiencing vast interpersonal changes and experienced subsequent attachment difficulties which were influenced by a range of developmental, psychological and psychosocial factors and stressors post parental death. Although indicators of growth were also apparent, the findings support the potential association of parental death in adolescence to ongoing developmental, psychological and psychosocial effects, from adolescence to adulthood. Implications for Counselling Psychologists’ clinical practice, training and consultancy have been addressed. How the humanistic and psychodynamic counselling framework addresses the needs of the individual parentally bereaved in adolescence are illuminated. Furthermore, a range of directive and non-directive therapeutic interventions and clinical suggestions have been recommended as Counselling Psychologists work in an integrative manner in line with the nuanced need of the individual client. Early intervention inclusive of a comprehensive complex grief assessment and a developmentally informed formulation is suggested. Psychological therapy to aid the development of emotional regulation skills is also suggested. Parent-child/Family therapy and a range of treatment and preventative initiatives and interventions across the education, health and community sector is recommended with both the bereaved individual…

▼ The death of a child can be one of the hardest things an individual will have to endure in their lifetime. Many parents and siblings struggle to understand why or how this type of tragedy occurs. Family dynamics play a big role in how the family mourns the loss of the child. The way the family copes depends on how they all communicate with one another. Every relationship is different and depending on the relationship is how an individual will feel after the loss of their child or the loss of their sibling. There is a constant push and pull for family members to understand one another and how they are feeling in these types of situations. It is up to the family in order to balance out their life to create a new normal without the child that has passed.

▼ Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
This essay explores a broad range of literary works that treat long-term grief as a natural response to the death of a child. Literary examples show gaps in the medical and social sciences’ considerations of grief, since these disciplines judge bereaved mothers’ grief as excessive or label it bereavement disorder. By contrast, authors who employ the ancient storyline of child death illuminate maternal grieving practices, which are commonly marked with a vigilance that expresses itself in wildness. Many of these authors treat grief as a forced pilgrimage, but question the possibility of returning to a previous state of psychological balance. Instead, the mothers in their stories and poems resist external pressure for closure and silence and favor lasting memory. Harriet Beecher Stowe, in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and Emily Dickinson, in letters to bereaved mother Susan Gilbert Dickinson and in the poetry included in these letters, represent maternal child loss as compelling a movement into a new state and emphasize the lasting pain and disruption of this loss.

▼ Most modern
grief theories and clinical working models are constructed in the context of Western culture, and the effectiveness or explanatory power of those theories and models have not been fully tested in other cultures, especially through a more complex interactive model. The current study focuses on the role of attachment style, coping strategy, social support and spirituality on older bereaved parents’
grief. It also explores if differences in age, gender, causes of the child’s death, time since the death have a differential effect on
parental grief. The purpose of this study was to test the main factors effectively mediating or aggregating the extent of Chinese parents’
grief following their only child’s death. The sample of this study consisted of 206 Chinese older parents whose child has died. Since the study includes the development of initial theory and model construction aided by data collection, structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized as the analysis method. Results found statistically significant effects of attachment style, coping strategy, social support on the level of
parental grief. Different groups showed different behavioral patterns in response to the death of a child. Specifically, women showed more insecure attachment style, had more daily spiritual experiences and perceived more social support. Older participants perceived less social support. Implications for social work practice, research, theory development, policy change are discussed.

▼ There is a paucity of research on the effect of parents maintaining a continuing bond with their child who died by suicide. Furthermore, there is a gap in the research literature regarding differences among the
parental continuing bond, posttraumatic stress, and complicated
grief between parents who directly witnessed the suicide or found the body of their child and parents who were notified of the suicide by indirect methods (police, clergy, family, media, etc). This quantitative study included a convenience sample of 219 participants (response rate = 63.29%) who self-identified as parents whose child died by suicide 6 or more months prior to the initiation of the study. Participants were predominately White (85.8%), married (67.1%), female (91.3%), and mostly between the ages of 51 and 60 (44.7%). Data were collected on the Internet using the REDCap software program. The survey, which was completed anonymously, contained viii demographic information and three questionnaires: The Impact of Event Scale—Revised (IES-R), 22 items (0-88); Inventory of Complicated
Grief (ICG), 19 items (0-76); and Continuing Bond Scale (CBS), three items (0-15). The mean score for the IES- R was 34.75, mean score for ICG was 33.03, and mean score for CBS was 6.28. The results suggest that the higher the parents continuing bond was, the higher were the levels of posttraumatic stress disorder and complicated
grief. There were no differences between the group who observed the suicide or found the body and the group who was notified by other methods.

▼ The main aim of this mixed methods study was to explore parental grief after the death of a child to chronic illness. The support that parents sought or received in correlation with their needs during the period their child was ill and after his/her death was explored. Parents (N=56) of children who had been hospitalized in a public pediatric oncology unit in Athens participated in the study. Fifty six semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using Grounded Theory Methods. The inventories WHOQOL-BREF, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Inventory of Complicated Grief were administered. Parents’ experiences during the period the child was hospitalized were found to be related to their grief after the child’s death. Factors that influence their grief were related to the care the child received during hospitalization and the support parents had before and after the child’s death. Parents’ family and social network are essential sources of support in bereavement. Social support was found to improve the quality of life of bereaved parents and to reduce complicated grief. A considerable percentage of the parents who participated in the research, however, suffered complicated grief. None of the parents in the study received formal bereavement support from the hospital where their child had been treated. However, continuity in the provision of support from the medical staff after the child’s death is important to parents. Further research is necessary for the identification of other factors contributing to complicated grief and the identification and evaluation of bereavement follow-up care provided by public pediatric oncology hospitals in Greece.
Τα ερωτηματολόγια Inventory of Complicated Grief, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support και WHOQOL-BREF χορηγήθηκαν για την διερεύνηση της σχέσης της κοινωνικής στήριξης με τον θρήνο των γονιών.

▼ Although significant growth has occurred in some areas of the
grief and bereavement literature, little attention has been paid to the phenomenon of adult child loss from the perspective of parents. Simultaneously, there have been mounting challenges to the traditional
grief work hypothesis, which translates 'detachment' as healthy grieving, by proponents of the 'continuing bond' model. While the notion of an ongoing connection with the deceased seems to more accurately describe the experience of bereaved parents, there has been minimal research to explore evidence for this. The intent of this qualitative study was to examine the written and spoken discourse of parents bereaved of adult children in an effort to understand the ways that language is used to give account to that experience and to discern something of the nature of the parent-adult child relationship in death. A discourse analytic approach (Potter & Wetherell, 1987) was taken in order to understand more specifically the function, structure, and variability of written and spoken accounts of bereaved parents. Discourse was collected from diverse sources, including solicited written submissions, face-to-face interviews, published writings and Internet chat between bereaved parents. The findings revealed a range of discursive devices and practices available to participants, through which they achieved reconstructions of their deceased adult children, their relationships with their children, and their experiences of
parental bereavement. The most prominent result was the discovery of the use of extreme case formulations (Pomerantz, 1986) by bereaved parents. This particular discursive device had only previously been identified in contexts of conflict. Additionally, participants used categorization, detailed description, characterization, comparison, contrast, paradox, evidence-building, and metaphor as discursive strategies and devices. The social actions performed in the process included: constructing/reconstructing, convincing, remembering, evaluating, describing, and demonstrating
parental investment. The discursive content ranged from talk of how special the child was, to the constancy of thoughts about the deceased child. There was also discursive evidence in support of the of 'continuing bonds' model. This study promises to inform the literature on
parental bereavement as well as to widen the field of discursive psychology to now include research in
grief and loss.

▼ Adolescent development relies on the integration of experiences to support positive youth outcomes. Supportive environments and social supports reduce dangerous risk-taking behaviors, which threaten healthy development. Findings from previous studies have underscored the critical role of attachment in maladaptive behaviors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to explore adolescent perceptions of the experience of permanent separation from parental guardians and the perceived impact on behavior. A key focus was on understand the meaning of parental loss through separation in youth by investigating the lived experiences and perceptions of adolescents in permanent foster care through the Department of Social Services (DSS). A phenomenological design was used to illuminate the complex phenomena of parental separation. An interpretive semistructured interview was used in this research. This research design allowed participants to explore and describe the phenomena they experienced.

▼ A deep interest in how relationships, specifically romantic partnerships, cope with
and survive tragedies, guides this research. My research question was: What are the
narratives of intact bereaved couples whose children have died after receiving palliative care
for a life-limiting illness? Five couples were interviewed who had lost their children ranging
in age from 1-14 years of age. This loss occurred between 2 to 9 years previous to this study.
The purpose of this narrative research study was to better understand the ways in
which intact marital partners/couples coped together with the stress and grief involved in
having a child with a life-limiting condition and then having that child die after receiving
palliative care. A secondary aim was to bring forth their voices through their narratives as a
means to address the stigmatization and isolation often experienced by those who are
bereaved, especially those who have lost a child. This project informs professionals who are
working with couples undergoing the struggle of a child's critical illness or who are working
with bereaved couples.
Each couple's narrative account was written in story format. In addition to the rich
information gained from reading the holistic stories, 5 themes emerged through a categorical
content analysis which were: 1) the last thing you worry about are issues about us, 2)
accommodating one another's coping, 3) recognizing sources of support and limitations, 4)
two souls against the world, and 5) we have a common bond : lessons and legacy of the child.

▼ This study examines how parents disclose a child’s
gay/lesbian identity to outsiders as a signifier of true acceptance
of the child’s identity. The closet metaphor has been applied not
only to gay and lesbian individuals who are hiding their
homosexuality from those who perceive them to be heterosexual, but
the metaphor has also been applied to parents of gay and lesbian
individuals. The secret is unique because literature on family
secrets discusses the solidarity among secret-keepers, but keeping
the secret of a child’s homosexuality may have detrimental effects
on the child’s identity and self-esteem. A preliminary study found
evidence of a three-phase model of acceptance that includes going
into the closet, feeling good about the issues, and coming out of
the closet. The current study found evidence of this phasic model
that includes variations of popular
grief models, plus extended
behavioral and communicative actions that make up a more
comprehensive model for how parents cope with, accept, and disclose
the family secret of a child’s gay/lesbian identity. Further, the
study includes analysis of general versus specific disclosures and
the differences between mothers’ and fathers’ reactions. A unique
online method was used to gather nationwide
participation.

▼ Using a mixed method approach, this study explored the impact of attachment styles on the
grief experience of parents and guardians of a child who has a hematological or oncological illness. The
grief experience was evaluated through the lenses of Chronic Sorrow, Ambiguous Loss and Anticipatory
Grief. This study was conducted at the Loma Linda University Medical Center Hematology Oncology Pediatric Clinic and was completed by 106 participants who responded to a quantitative survey with open-ended questions. An open-ended questionnaire regarding the impact of the child’s illness on the couple relationship was completed by six couples. The results indicated that experienced
grief is significantly lower for parents or guardians with a Secure attachment style. The degree of
grief experienced by parents could be predicted by whether or not the child was currently receiving treatment, whether the child was considered cured and the time elapsed since the diagnosis was given. Healthy and unhealthy coping skills were identified within the couple relationships, which provided richness to the understanding of the experience of parents and guardians with a child who has a life threatening illness.

▼ The study of the loss of a sibling in mainstream
bereavement literature has been largely neglected in psychology.
This sentiment has often, and still continues, to be expressed by
those outside and within the psychological field. The focus in the
childhood bereavement literature has been on the loss of a parent
and, in adulthood, on the loss of a child or of a spouse. Despite
the growing interest in sibling loss in more recent times (since
the 1980s), more specifically in childhood and adolescent sibling
loss, in reality bereaved siblings remain ‘forgotten’ and even
marginalised. The present study concerned the experience of the
loss of a brother or sister in young adulthood, an area that has
been largely neglected. The phenomenon was explored using a
qualitative approach and employing the empirical phenomenological
psychological research method as articulated by Amedeo Giorgi.
In-depth interviews with three research participants who were asked
to describe their experience of the loss of their sibling were used
to gather the data. The emphasis was on discovery, on allowing the
siblings to speak for themselves by posing an open-ended question
rather than focusing on isolated aspects of the loss experience.
The general psychological structure revealed that the experience of
the loss of a brother or sister evolves over time and cannot
meaningfully be understood as an event that can be contained within
a specified moment in time. The experience is a fundamentally
relational and paradoxical phenomenon and is reflective of the
context in which it occurs. With the loss, the sibling's whole
world changes in a very radical way. It is a triple loss: the loss
of the brother or sister, the loss of the family unit and the
'loss' of the parents as the siblings had known them. Initially
bereaved siblings put aside their
grief in an attempt to protect
parents and significant others. A conspiracy of silence evolves
which conceals their pain and as they continue with life as

stability. Yet internally the bereaved sibling struggles with
intense emotions and a lonely struggle ensues. The lack of
acknowledgement of the sibling’s

critical to bereaved siblings and when this is possible they are
able to let go of their deep emotions and grieve the loss of their
brother or sister. The loss of a sibling is the experience of
losing various parts of the self and needing to reclaim and
reintegrate self. The main contribution of this study can be

multi-layered and multi-dimensional process of this loss experience
to clinicians and others who care for bereaved siblings. Where the

▼ "Déjalo descansar, no le llores"
- "Let them rest, don't cry for them" is an expression Mexican
mothers often hear after the death of a child. While accepted as a
culturally polite means of expressing condolence, the phrase
nonetheless can have a detrimental effect on the parental
bereavement experience of these mothers. Through the use of focus
groups, 22 Mexican migrant mothers were interviewed to better
understand the role that imperatives such as "Déjalo descansar" and
other prescribed beliefs, rituals, and customs play in their
bereavement experience. From the five focus groups conducted in
this qualitative study, participants reported that the expression,
"Déjalo descansar, no le llores" and other such culturally
normative expressions served to stifle the expression of their
grief. In addition to cultural factors unique to this group, the
issue of their residency status impacted their grief experience, as
these mothers faced difficult decisions regarding the disposition
of their children's remains and the absence of emotional support
due to being separated from extended family members in Mexico.
Other findings from this study include the importance of
maintaining a connection with the deceased child through the use of
personal, religious, and cultural activities, the significant role
that religion played in serving as a source of support, and the
benefit participants reported in talking with others about their
bereavement experience. This research study contributes to the
literature on grief and bereavement, in the context of parental
bereavement and as specifically related to the intrapersonal
bereavement experience of Mexican migrant
mothers.

▼ Grief research generally demonstrates that children and teenagers who have lost a parent in suiciderisk developing severe psychological and physical morbidity, as well as social disabilities, in adultlife as a result of traumatic aspects of the death and complicated grief reactions. The youngbereaved also run a highly increased risk of developing suicidal behaviour or to commit suicidethemselves. Despite these alarming reports, the research field is poorly explored and studies thattake an interest in the long-term consequences and the subjective experiences of the bereavedyoungsters are lacking. A qualitative study using narrative methods has been carried out toexamine the experiences of four young women, who during adolescence lost a father in suicide. The study specifically focuses on the grief process, the short- and long-term consequences, and theneed for social support in relation to family, extended network and society. The study reveals thatthe women’s traumatic loss has shattered their basic assumptions about the world as a safe andmeaningful place. A fear of losing another significant person, i.e. the remaining parent, siblings ora life partner is also a common denominator. The women have experienced complicated griefreactions such as guilt, shame, anger, feelings of abandonment and “why-questions” regardingtheir fathers’ suicide motives. They have found it difficult to receive social support due to moralaspects of suicide as a death cause – sometimes even within their own family – and due to a fear ofbeing condemned or regarded abnormal if they told others about their trauma. The time aspect isnot found to have affected the grief process. This process has been facilitated, however, throughsocial support from family, relatives, friends and professionals. Moreover, “sense-making”, or thecapacity to construct an understanding of the loss experience, as well as the active process of“re-membering”, has been found valuable in the grief process as it contributes to the constructionof an inner representation of the father. A continued relationship to the father after his death has inmost cases been regarded as helpful in the grief process. The women describe that the father’ssuicide has affected their self-conception and their life contents. Coping with the loss the womenseem to have developed stronger self-esteem, but at the same time some of them have come toregard themselves as “odd” and more mature in comparison with their peers. All women talk abouttheir fathers’ deaths with high actuality, indicating that the grief is most present. The womendescribe a re-priority of what they find important in life; close relationships are portrayed as moreimportant, as well as being helpful to others.

Previous research of children with parental loss shows visible tendencies that focus is on remaining parent and that the child easily tends to fall in shadow or becomes forgotten. The study aims to investigate professional´s views and experiences of children´s needs for support when losing a parent. The theoretical views of the study are; the perspective of salutogenic, ”the new sociology of childhood” and the theory of structuration in a constructive perspective. The study was performed with a phenomenographic methodological approach to capture professional´s views and experiences and the material consists of seven semi-structured interviews. The result and conclusions shows that professionals proceed from some kind of model in their work and the model then guide the professionals in giving information, support and advice to the child. The child´s needs of support is mainly to find new strategies to deal with everyday life and the creation of identity when losing a parent. Different inputs of supports can help the child to defuse and normalise their expression of emotions in losing a parent. The ambition of the professionals is to listen to the child in order to meet each individual child and his/hers family situation, since children are not an homogenous group, their needs also vary. Most important is that the child doesn´t feel that he/she also is losing the remaining parent´s attendance and caring for him/her, through the parent´s own grieving process.

▼ In this study a mother’s experiences of communication between her adult son
dying in leiomyosarcoma and herself (the author), between his family and a
palliative home care team and communication in the support of the mother in
her parental grief and bereavement are described and analyzed.
The mother’s experiences are captured in personal accounts, writings, during
the year of her son’s illness with cancer and his palliative home care and during
three years of grief and bereavement after her loss. The data analysis is carried
out in four steps by the mother as a researcher:
1) Identification of events of experiences of communication and significant
concepts in the writings
2) Construction of four narratives, illustrating the concepts and including
excerpts from the writings
3) Interpretation, contextualization and validation of the narratives
4) Contextualization in broader contexts.
The son’s hope and disavowal and the mother’s fear and despair emerged as
important concepts in understanding the communication between them during
his palliative home care. Recognition, acknowledgment and respect from the
palliative home care team supported the mother.
A network of supportive arrangements was made available to the son and his
family. The team recognized the son’s and the family members’ emotional
needs as well as the family members’ needs to do anything they could for their
husband, father, brother and son. Trust was a key concept in the communication
between the son and his family on one hand and the palliative home care team on the other. Trust seems to be a base for the empowerment of the family
members. Main factors besides the team’s medical professionalism influencing
trust were flexibility, accessibility and continuity.
Information, control, friendship and shared experiences were important factors
in supporting the mother in her first year of bereavement. The findings point to
the necessity of customizing bereavement support, specifically for high risk
mourners.
In the short term perspective the mother found support in her pre school aged
granddaughter, who had lost her father. These contacts provided breaks in the
grief, actualized positive memories, established and sustained rituals. In the
long term perspective confirmed family bonds helped the mother in her reconciliation
process.
Empathy, based on the welfare system, providing flexible structures in which
the mother was recognized and acknowledged, felt trust, was looked upon as
an individual, was empowered and finally was reached by support after her
loss, was of substantial importance to her. Empathy based on compassion,
shared experiences, shared loss and strengthened family bonds supported her.
Empathy to self allowed her to make use of the support she received and was
part of her reconciliation process.

▼ Children, pedestrians and pedacyclists are considered vulnerable road users, and are more likely to die in an auto crash. In 2009 244 child pedestrians and 74 child pedacyclists were killed in the United States (NHTSA, 2010). My study describes through the narratives of bereaved parents how they navigate
grief and loss with an emphasis on how they make meaning of the ongoing nature of their loss. Eight parents who lost a child between 1992 and 2009 were interviewed in 2013. The interview data (along with data from social media and memorial websites) was analyzed from a symbolic interactionist perspective to gain insights into the subjective experiences of
grief and meaning restructuring among this population of the bereaved. It may be concluded that such
grief is prolonged, is complicated and consistent with extant
grief literature and life-long in its effect on surviving parents. The death represents an event horizon from which parent grievers live out the rest of their lives. This study gives voice to a marginalized group of grievers and indicates a need for further research among populations of those affected by vulnerable road user fatalities.

▼ This study examined the role of personality variables in the relationship between subjective well-being and loss of relationships through death or
parental divorce. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of extraversion, neuroticism, and locus of control as moderating variables between loss of relationship and subjective well-being in college students. Given the prevalence of loss through either death or
parental divorce in college students and potential long-term effects on subjective well-being, the current study attempted to further knowledge in this area. Thus, this study aimed to better understand how life events are moderated by personality in influencing an individual’s subjective well-being.
This study predicted that individuals who had experienced a loss of relationship would have a lower subjective well-being than individuals who had not experienced a loss of relationship. This hypothesis was not supported by the data which found that individuals who experienced a loss of relationship did not report lower levels of subjective well-being than individuals who had not experienced a loss of relationship.
Additionally, it was expected that individuals who reported higher levels of neuroticism and who had an internal locus of control would have a lower subjective well-being. Again, these hypotheses were not supported, and the results indicated that individuals with higher levels of neuroticism also reported higher levels of positive affect and neuroticism was positively correlated with life satisfaction. Furthermore, individuals who reported higher levels of extraversion did not report lower levels of negative affect or life satisfaction.
Finally, this study hypothesized that a loss of relationship through death would result in lower levels of subjective well-being. However, the results of this study indicated that individuals with a loss of relationship through death did not report lower levels of subjective well-being when compared to individuals without a loss of relationship through death. The results of this study further the literature on loss of relationship through death and
parental divorce and on subjective well-being. This study provides support for the subjective well-being research and provides contrasting findings in regards to personality variables. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are also addressed.

▼ For bereaved parents the death of a child is the most tragic of all deaths. When a child dies, parents lose not only their child, but all their child represents, such as a future together and descendants. Life as they assumed it would be ends with the child’s death and the role of parent changes to that of bereaved parent. A child’s death seems to subvert the natural order. Parental grieving can be, therefore, the most devastating, the longest lasting, and the most far-reaching in its effects of all forms of grief. Although much has been written about grieving infant death, adolescent suicide and violent death, information is sparse on grieving the death of a young adult child from cancer. One of the reasons for this is that the incidence of cancer in the 18 to 25-year-old group is very rare. This thesis aims to address the gap with a creative nonfiction memoir titled Sing no sad songs and an exegesis titled Grieving the death of a young adult child from cancer. The creative work is a memoir of my own experience in dealing with the diagnosis, illness and death from cancer of my 23-year-old daughter, Rebecca. The exegesis consists of six chapters which provide a context for Sing no sad songs. Chapter one comprises a critical reflection on the inspiration and influences that informed my writing, the process I used, and issues that arose during the drafting. Chapter two contextualises Sing no sad songs within the findings of psychological and sociological theories of grief. Chapter three elaborates on these findings with an examination of spiritual perspectives on grief. Chapter four analyses the language traditionally used to describe grief and bereavement in Western societies. It concludes with an examination of the human affinity with story telling and the way in which narrative can be used as a tool to help the bereaved assimilate their grief into their changed life story. Chapter five is an analysis of creative nonfiction and examines my rationale for incorporating creative nonfiction techniques in my memoir. Chapter six concludes the exegesis. – Abstract.

▼ Blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) has become an increasingly acceptable treatment for children with life threatening malignant diseases. Survival rates for transplant recipients vary from 23% to 63%. Children with complications from BMT, typically die in the hospital after a prolonged stay. The
parental decision to allow a child to die a natural death is typically made in an aura of emotional duress and bewilderment at the complexity and volume of new information that must be assimilated. The purpose of this study was to describe the process of
parental decision making for Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) or to withdraw life support in pediatric BMT.The framework for this study was developed from the author's epistemology that blends neo-modernism (recognition of individual uniqueness yet acknowledgment that certain underlying universal principals exist) with the idea that the nature of all things may be viewed as an ongoing, self-constructing process.Grounded theory methodology was used. The sample (determined through theoretical sampling) consisted of seven parents of children who died following BMT and for whom the parent made an end-of-life decision. Data was analyzed using constant comparative analysis, a method that combines both substantive and theoretical coding of data with a qualitative style of theory development. The realization of
parental knowing was the process that parents used to navigate the human problem of having to make the end-of-life decision for their children who were dying following blood and marrow transplantation. This process consisted of four categories: Developing Trust, Committed to Seeing It Through, Facing My Worst Fear, and Acceptance of Self. The knowledge gained from this study will inform nurses who care for children who are dying following pediatric BMT. Strategies may be developed that will assist nurses to support the development of
parental trust, to help sustain the commitment of parents as they move through the BMT treatment journey, and to assist parents as they face their worst fear. As a result, parents should be better able to achieve an acceptance for themselves that will facilitate a more satisfying experience of the ever changing process occurring in their own lives.

▼ Remarkable advancements in life-saving technology have led to prolonged survival rates for premature infants and young children who have experienced trauma, illnesses, or medical disabilities. However, this progress has also led to a concurrent increase in long-term morbidity, including chronic and degenerative health conditions that result in early death. Early interventionists, special educators, and other multidisciplinary professionals are subsequently working with a growing number of families who are facing the potential deaths of their children due to life-threatening disabilities. To support parents facing such loss, an understanding of their life experiences and support needs is essential. However, most research related to supporting grieving parents is based on samples drawn from self-help bereavement support groups which typically consist of parents whose children died as a result of catastrophic illnesses or trauma. Little is known about supporting parents whose children are diagnosed with life-threatening or degenerative disabilities. This qualitative inquiry explored the experiences and needs of 7 bereaved parents whose children died between the ages of 3 and 21 due to a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Four professionals also participated for triangulation in this national study. Narrative analysis was used to search for themes in the stories shared by participants. The themes that emerged for parent experiences include: abundant stress from dissonance, exhaustion, chronic changes, unanticipated shock, and profound
grief; ongoing struggles for validation; and, the positive impact of formal and informal supports. The themes that emerged for parent needs include: hope, information, useful resources, helpful networks, healthy partnerships, choices, and validation. Finally, the themes that emerged for preferred supports during loss and bereavement include: professionals' awareness of and attention to parent experiences and needs throughout the child's lifespan; ongoing connections with providers and activities that were a part of the child's life; and, support options beyond traditional bereavement groups. The results are discussed with reference to previous and emerging theory and research in
parental bereavement. Practical implications and future research are also discussed.

▼ The purpose of this study has been to investigate how psychosocial support for families where a parent suffers from a life threatening illness can be constructed. The intent was also to explore how the child's perspective is protected and what barriers and opportunities there are for family oriented support. The study has a qualitative approach and includes interviews with four social workers. The interviews were analyzed with a systems theory and attachment theory. The conclusions are that the whole family suffers psychological and social pressures when a parent is sick. The psychosocial support is given individually and to the family as a unit to help them deal with their changed life situation and facilitate subsequent grieving. An important aspect of the support is psycho education to parents and children, which aims to increase the understanding of the situation, their individual and each others' reactions. The social workers stress that it’s important to establish contacts in the family’s private network and support agencies in the community.
It falls under the medical mission to offer support to relatives and it includes a responsibility to inform and support the child based on individual circumstances. However, there seems to exist a variation and uncertainty about its nature and extent. Therefore professionals need to be aware of the importance of highlighting the child’s needs and support families.

▼ Games are a natural part of many people's everyday lives and have gone from being a divergent interest to become Sweden's biggest cultural export. As a result from this expansion, digital tools had to be further developed and through this progress these tools have reached new areas of usage, which has created new challenges for game developers. The games that offers a higher purpose than pure entertainment goes under the genre serious games. Serious games are used in various application areas such as; in the military, health care, education, business, and psychology, which is the framework of this thesis. By combining and unifying previous research grounded in psychology and game science I want to answer the questions: How can games be used as a therapeutic tool in a child's grieving process? and, Which features should such a game focus on? These questions are answered through the information gathered from two interviews conducted with respondents that have different expertise within the area of this study, this to reach a broader perspective. A child's grieving process can manifest itself in various ways depending on the individual's level of sensitivity. It is therefore difficult to draw any general conclusions on how such a game should be designed. All games have the opportunity to motivate and engage, but this is not unique to a serious game and therefore a measurement function is essential in a digital rehabilitation tool to provide the therapist with valuable information about the patient. The figurative language makes it possible for the child to communicate where the spoken language sometimes has limits. For older children social support can be important as it creates opportunities to meet others in similar situations and together work towards improvement. Grief is a non-linear process and can present itself in many different ways and it is therefore important that the game should offer various turn-outs to make it adaptable for the individual.
