Les composés deutérés sont d’un intérêt grandissant dans des domaines variés. Par exemple, en pharmacologie, l'échange H/D peut améliorer les propriétés pharmacocinétiques de certains médicaments ou réduire leur toxicité. Les composés deuterés peuvent également être utilisés comme étalons internes en spectroscopie de masse. Il est donc important de trouver un moyen simple et sélectif d'échanger l'hydrogène avec le deutérium sur des molécules d’intérêt biologique. Les nanoparticules, de ruthénium en particulier, se sont révélées être des systèmes efficaces pour catalyser cet échange. Cependant, étant très actives, elles conduisent souvent à la réduction de substrats aromatiques. L'objectif principal du doctorat est l’élaboration de nouvelles nanoparticules permettant de contrôler la réactivité en échange isotopique H/D. Nous avons d’abord synthétisé des alliages Ru-Pt afin d’introduire du platine, moins actif en échange H/D, et donc empoisonner la surface du Ru. Nous avons montré qu’en changeant le précurseur de platine, on pouvait changer la distribution atomique de surface, et ainsi moduler la réactivité des nanoparticules. Nous avons finalement synthétisé des nanoparticules de nickel et d'iridium. Ces nanoparticules se sont avérées être des catalyseurs efficaces pour l'échange H/D, sans réduction de fonctions aromatiques. De plus, des sélectivités différentes ont été obtenues en fonction du métal utilisé.

Deuterated compounds are molecules of great interest in various fields. In pharmacology, the H/D exchange can improve the pharmacokinetic properties of some drugs or reduce their toxicity. In addition, deuterium-labelled compounds can be used as internal standards for mass spectroscopy, or as tracers for the understanding of different reaction mechanisms. Therefore, it is important to find a way to exchange hydrogen with deuterium in a simple, selective and efficient way. The main goal of the PhD project is the synthesis of novel nanoparticles for isotopic exchange (H/D). Metal nanoparticles and more particularly ruthenium nanoparticles, has shown their efficiency to catalyze this exchange. However, ruthenium nanoparticles are very active in arene hydrogenation, and often lead to the reduction of aromatic substrates. In a second part of the work, we synthesized Ru-Pt alloys in an attempt to passivate the Ru surface with platinum, which is less-active in H/D exchange. We have shown that by changing the platinum precursor, we can change the atomic distribution of the surface, and thus we were able to modulate the reactivity of nanoparticles. We finally synthesized Ni and Ir nanoparticles. These nanoparticles have proven to be efficient catalysts for H/D exchange, without reducing aromatic functions. In addition, different selectivity was obtained depending on the metal used.

▼ By the late-nineteenth-century, cricket had a well-established national narrative. Namely; that the game‘s broadly pre-industrial, rural, and egalitarian culture had been replaced by the 'gentlemanly‘ ethos of amateurism; a culture which encouraged cricket for its own sake and specific norms of 'moral‘ behaviour exemplified by idioms‘ such as 'it‘s not cricket‘. A century later, much of this narrative not only remained intact, it survived unchallenged. However, a regionally specific sub-narrative had emerged in relation to cricket outside of 'first-class‘ Test and County cricket. Cricket in the North was 'Working class‘, 'professional‘, 'commercialised‘, and played within highly 'competitive‘ leagues, while cricket in the South was 'middle-class‘, 'amateur‘, 'non-commercial‘, and played in non-competitive 'friendly‘ fixtures. Whereas cricket in the North has attracted a good deal of academic attention, there remains a paucity of contextualised academic research of cricket in the South. Due to assumed social and cultural similarities, the so-called 'friendly‘ cricket of the South remains subsumed within the national narrative. Whereas we now know a good deal about who played cricket, and why, in the North, we know little, if anything, of those who played cricket, why they did so, and under what circumstances, in the South. This thesis, which focuses on the County of Surrey, thus examines the social and cultural development of 'club‘ cricket in the South for the first time. In order to test the historical assumption that cricket in the South replicated the gentlemanly amateurism inherent to the game‘s national culture and historical discourse, this thesis shall not only examine the origins of these important cultural 'identities‘, but who was playing cricket, and under what social, environmental, economic, and cultural circumstances, in Surrey between 1870 and 1970. In basic terms, it will demonstrate that much of the historiography proves misleading, especially regarding the universality of non-competitive cricket. Moreover, this thesis will also establish that the introduction, implementation, and spread of non-competitive cricket was a class-specific and discriminatory ideology, which had close associations with the middle-classes‘ increasing insecurity and their migration to Surrey. The ideological basis upon which non-competitive cricket was based, was to have fundamentally negative repercussions relating to the game‘s cultural meaning and popularity, and the 're-introduction‘ of competitive league cricket to the South in 1968 may well have saved the sport from a slow and agonising extinction.

▼ By the late-nineteenth-century, cricket had a well-established national narrative. Namely; that the game‘s broadly pre-industrial, rural, and egalitarian culture had been replaced by the 'gentlemanly‘ ethos of amateurism; a culture which encouraged cricket for its own sake and specific norms of 'moral‘ behaviour exemplified by idioms‘ such as 'it‘s not cricket‘. A century later, much of this narrative not only remained intact, it survived unchallenged. However, a regionally specific sub-narrative had emerged in relation to cricket outside of 'first-class‘ Test and County cricket. Cricket in the North was 'Working class‘, 'professional‘, 'commercialised‘, and played within highly 'competitive‘ leagues, while cricket in the South was 'middle-class‘, 'amateur‘, 'non-commercial‘, and played in non-competitive 'friendly‘ fixtures. Whereas cricket in the North has attracted a good deal of academic attention, there remains a paucity of contextualised academic research of cricket in the South. Due to assumed social and cultural similarities, the so-called 'friendly‘ cricket of the South remains subsumed within the national narrative. Whereas we now know a good deal about who played cricket, and why, in the North, we know little, if anything, of those who played cricket, why they did so, and under what circumstances, in the South. This thesis, which focuses on the County of Surrey, thus examines the social and cultural development of 'club‘ cricket in the South for the first time. In order to test the historical assumption that cricket in the South replicated the gentlemanly amateurism inherent to the game‘s national culture and historical discourse, this thesis shall not only examine the origins of these important cultural 'identities‘, but who was playing cricket, and under what social, environmental, economic, and cultural circumstances, in Surrey between 1870 and 1970. In basic terms, it will demonstrate that much of the historiography proves misleading, especially regarding the universality of non-competitive cricket. Moreover, this thesis will also establish that the introduction, implementation, and spread of non-competitive cricket was a class-specific and discriminatory ideology, which had close associations with the middle-classes‘ increasing insecurity and their migration to Surrey. The ideological basis upon which non-competitive cricket was based, was to have fundamentally negative repercussions relating to the game‘s cultural meaning and popularity, and the 're-introduction‘ of competitive league cricket to the South in 1968 may well have saved the sport from a slow and agonising extinction.

▼ The research efforts discussed herein encompass two broad subjects, the development of catalytic methodologies using palladium-NHC complexes and the hydrogen-deuterium exchange of aromatic molecules under acidic conditions. The introduction (Chapter 1) gives a brief overview of the history, progress, and recent developments in these fields. ❧ In Chapter 2, the development of a method for the hydroamination of vinyl arenes using a palladium-NHC complex is discussed. This methodology selectively furnished the cross-coupled hydroamination products in a Markovnikov fashion while greatly reducing undesired acid-catalyzed homocoupling of the vinyl arenes. ❧ Chapter 3 describes the trifluoroacetic acid-d1-catalyzed hydrogen-deuterium exchange of aromatic amines and amides. While this method was amenable to efficient deuterium incorporation for numerous substrates, best results were seen with less basic anilines and highly activated acetanilides, reflecting the likelihood of different mechanistic pathways. ❧ Chapter 4 represents the intersection of these methods by employing a palladium-NHC complex under the conditions described in Chapter 3 to effect the ortho-selective ligand-directed hydrogen-deuterium exchange of aromatic ketones, amides, and amino acids, accompanied in some cases by concurrent acid-catalyzed electrophilic deuteration. Experimental evidence strongly suggests that palladium facilitates C-H activation of the aromatic substrates, a mechanism seldom observed under strongly acidic conditions. ❧ In Chapter 5, the application of hydrogen-deuterium exchange methods to a pedagogical context is examined. Using acidic deuterium oxide, efficient deuterium incorporation into resorcinol was possible during the course of a single undergraduate laboratory session, and iodination of the deuterated product allowed for a visual representation of a kinetic isotope effect. ❧ Appendix 5 contains supplementary research regarding the synthesis of various NHC ligands for palladium incorporating sp3 amine substituents. ▼ This thesis fills a manifest gap in the history of end-of-life care in England through an exploration of the circumstances, position and importance of the Friedenheim, Home of Peace for the Dying (1885-1981), thought to be the first proto-hospice in this country. As yet virtually unexplored in published works, the nature of this hospital and the ethos of care provided there are demonstrated through evidence drawn from a multiplicity of sources, including archival records and personal testimony. By definitively establishing the chronological evolution of the institution, its locations and facilities, discrepancies in current lists and commentaries are clarified. Analysis of the nature, scope and influence of this hospital, which offered specialised care only for the terminally ill, illustrates and informs the emergence of specialised care for the dying in England. The thesis tests the accepted primacy of the institution by an examination and comparison of coeval establishments for the sick and dying. The founder, Frances Davidson, sought to provide a place for the poor to die and the space thus provided for clinical, spiritual and social care is explored. The complexities of managing this philanthropic institution and sustaining its financial viability are exposed through consideration of its administration and evolution. Analysis of patient profiles, morbidity data and referral statistics furnishes insight into the evolving nature and place of the hospital within London’s medical and philanthropic worlds. Details of the clinical, social and spiritual attention given to the patients reveal the breadth of care provided for them. Finally, the thesis discloses links with Cicely Saunders and challenges the received assumption that the Friedenheim, by now called St. Columba’s Hospital, played no part in the establishment of the so-called ‘modern’ hospice movement. The extensive and detailed results of this research confirm and justify for the first time the Friedenheim’s accepted place as the London pioneer of dedicated institutional care for dying people and place it at the inception of specialised care in England for those at the end of life.

La demande croissante d’électricité, notamment renouvelable, entraîne une croissance de l’éolien avec l’utilisation de pales en composite de plus en plus grandes. Pour réduire le cout de maintenance de ces structures composites, le suivi de santé structurel (SHM) au cours du temps permet d’évaluer le comportement de la structure, d’anticiper les dégradations et la maintenance. Dans ce cadre, le développement de capteurs, à base de résine époxy et de nanotubes de carbone, appelés Quantum Resistive Sensor (QRS), est présenté. Les QRS peuvent être attachés à la surface de la structure ou intégrés à cœur durant la séquence de drapage. Durant la polymérisation de la résine, le comportement électrique du QRS traduit l’évolution de la réticulation et de la température dans la structure. Suite au processus de fabrication, l’influence des paramètres extérieurs (température, humidité, vitesse de déformation, coefficient de Poisson…) sur les caractéristiques des QRS a été étudiée. Durant l’utilisation de la structure composite, les QRS ont également permis la détection et la propagation d’endommagements jusqu’à la fracture ultime. Les QRS représentent donc une solution potentielle comme capteurs SHM non intrusifs, permettant un suivi de la structure, de sa fabrication jusqu’à sa dégradation finale.

The growing demands for electrical energy, especially renewable, is boosting the development of wind turbines equipped with longer composite blades. To reduce the maintenance cost of such huge composite parts, the structural health monitoring (SHM) is an approach to anticipate and/or follow the structural behaviour along time. To do so, a proper instrumentation is necessary and has to be as less intrusive as possible. To this end, the development of carbon nanotube- epoxy Quantum Resistive Sensor (QRS) is presented. QRS can be as well glued on the surface or embedded in the core of the composite structure during the stacking sequence. During manufacturing, both the temperature and resin crosslinking can be detected with the change in the QRS electrical characteristics. Once the structural part is made, the effect of the external parameters (strain rate, temperature, humidity, Poisson ratio…) on the electrical characteristics of QRS has been studied. During the composite life, the QRS electrical behaviour has also demonstrate its capability to detect the initiation and propagation of damage until final failure. A non-intrusive monitoring with QRS of the structure life cycle, from manufacturing until final breakage is therefore possible.

Lorsqu’un hélicoptère opère dans des conditions givrantes extrêmes, l’accumulation de glace sur les pales peut considérablement impacter les performances de l’appareil. De nombreuses recherches portant sur le développement d’un système de dégivrage à faible consommation et moindre coût ont été initiées ces dernières années. Dans cette thèse, une technique ondulatoire de protection contre la formation de glace sur les surfaces des pales d’hélicoptères est étudiée. La stratégie proposée repose sur l’utilisation d’ondes guidées d’ordre élevé spécifiques pour créer des cisaillements dépassant la force d’adhésion surfacique d’un profil de glace. Des essais ont d’abord été menés pour réaliser le modèle E.F. d’un tronçon de pale, puis une stratégie de réduction de modèle est développée pour la Méthode des Éléments Finis Ondulatoires. Cette formulation s’appuie sur la projection des vecteurs d’état sur une base réduite, constituée des formes d’ondes progressives. Elle permet de réaliser des analyses ondulatoires large-bande dans les structures complexes, 1D ou 2D périodiques. Les ondes guidées sont d’abord examinées dans la pale d’hélicoptère, puis les effets de localisation et de conversion des ondes sont interprétés dans divers guides d’ondes 1D et 2D. Les interactions de ces ondes d’ordre élevé avec les profils d’accrétion de glace, ainsi qu’avec plusieurs types de singularités structurelles, sont analysées au moyen d’une Méthode des Matrices de Diffusion. Une formulation ondulatoire temporelle est ensuite proposée pour l’analyse rapide de la propagation d’un train d’ondes dans les guides d’ondes couplés. Enfin, un réseau d’actionneurs est conçu pour la génération de trains d’ondes d’ordre élevé, et des validations temporelles sont réalisées dans une plaque composite ainsi que dans une pale de Super Puma.

When helicopters fly through extreme conditions, ice can aggregate on their blades and seriously affect the aircraft performances. Recently, an increasing research effort was devoted to the development of affordable low power de-icing solutions. In this thesis, a wave-based approach is adopted to prevent and/or remove ice aggregates from the surfaces of helicopter rotor blades. The de-icing strategy uses specific high-order guided waves to exceed the shear adhesion strength of ice accretion profiles. Experiments are conducted in order to update the FE model of a realistic rotor blade, then a Model Order Reduction strategy is developed for the Wave Finite Element Method. It involves a projection of the state vectors on a reduced basis of propagating waves shapes, and enables broadband wave analysis in structurally advanced 1D and 2D periodic structures. Guided wave propagation is studied within a helicopter rotor blade, and wave localization and conversion effects are discussed in various 1D and 2D composite waveguides. The interactions of high-order waves with ice aggregates and other types of structural singularities are also examined by means of a Diffusion Matrix Method. ▼ Regluna um res judicata eða bindandi réttaráhrif dóma er að finna í 116. gr. laga nr. 91/1991 um meðferð einkamála sem kveður á um að dómur sé bindandi um úrslit sakarefnis milli aðila og þeirra, sem koma að lögum í þeirra stað, um þær kröfur sem eru dæmdar þar að efni til. Lögð er áhersla á að skýra inntak reglunnar um bindandi réttaráhrif dóma með hliðsjón af því hvernig henni hefur verið beitt í dómaframkvæmd. Sérstaklega er litið til þeirra dóma sem fallið hafa eftir gildistöku laga nr. 91/1991 um meðferð einkamála. Í ritgerðinni er leitast við að svara álitaefnum í tengslum við það hvers konar úrlausnir dómstóla eru bindandi, hverja úrlausn bindur og hvað telst vera bindandi. Umfjöllunin er með þeim hætti að í 2. kafla er fjallað almennt um bindandi réttaráhrif dóma, uppruna hugtaksins, síðari þróun þess og sjónarmið sem búa að baki reglunni. Enn fremur er vikið að því hvers konar úrlausnir dómstóla hafa bindandi réttaráhrif og tengsl reglunnar við litis pendens áhrif í 4. mgr. 94. gr. eml. Í 3. kafla er síðan rætt nánar um inntak hugtaksins og höfuðþætti þess. Í 4. kafla er vikið að formlegum réttaáhrifum dóma með það að markmiði að afmarka hvenær dómur telst endanlegur. Í því skyni er fjallað um leiðir til endurskoðunar á úrlausn dómstóla sem og hvaða formkröfur megi gera til dóms svo hann hafi bindandi réttaráhrif. Jafnframt er vikið að því hvort það sé á forræði aðila að semja sig undan bindandi réttaráhrifum dóma. Í 5. kafla er gerð grein fyrir efnislegum réttaráhrifum sem eru hin eiginlegu bindandi réttaráhrif dóma og skilyrðum þeirra. Hin efnislegu réttaráhrif greinast í jákvæð efnisleg réttaráhrif og neikvæð efnisleg réttaráhrif og verður leitast við að afmarka inntak hvors um sig. Í 6. kafla er síðan litið til takmarkana á bindandi réttaráhrifum dóma en þær má greina í huglæg og hlutlæg mörk. Hin huglægu mörk lúta að því hverja dómsúrlausn bindur og er í umfjölluninni leitast við að afmarka hvort og í hvaða tilvikum dómur geti verið bindandi fyrir þriðja mann. Hin huglægu mörk snúa að því hvað telst vera bindandi og í því sambandi verður skoðað hvaða hluti dóms það er sem bindur hendur aðila og tengsl við hugtakið sakarefni. Þá er vikið að því hvenær breytingar á málatilbúnaði leiða til þess að heimilt er að höfða nýtt mál vegna áður dæmds sakarefnis. Auk þess er vikið að því hvort síðari atvik geti valdið því að bindandi réttaráhrif dóma falli niður. Að lokum eru helstu niðurstöður ritgerðarinnar dregnar saman í 7. kafla.

Nos estados sólido e gasoso, a água está em toda parte no Universo: nas mais distantes galáxias, entre as estrelas, nas manchas solares, nos planetas, em seus satélites e sistemas de anéis, em asteróides e cometas. Em seu estado líquido, a água tem suma importância no surgimento, desenvolvimento e manutenção da vida terrestre. No estudo de formação do Sistema Solar, a origem da água na Terra é um dos mais importantes e controversos assuntos discutidos. Das hipótesis mais atuais, pode-se destacar possíveis fontes principais, endógenas e exógenas, para a maior parte desta água. A hipótese endógena mais aceita salienta que boa parte da água da Terra pode ter sido absorvida por grãos diretamente do gás nebular. Já a hipótese exógena defende que a maior parte da água terrestre veio do cinturão de asteróides, através de planetesimais com até 10 % de água por massa. No entanto, nenhuma hipótese sozinha explica de forma satisfatória a origem de toda esta água. É bastante provável que a água da Terra tenha uma componente absorvida, uma componente asteroidal e uma componente cometária. Neste trabalho analisamos as implicações da composição previstas pelas principais hipótesis em um modelo que busca analisar as possíveis origens não só da água da Terra, mas também de quaisquer planetas terrestres formados em sistemas do tipo solar. A razão D/H da água é usada como fator discriminador. Realizamos simulações do último estágio de formação planetária com integrações de N-corpos em três dimensões e em todas as simulações consideramos a presença de embriões planetários e planetesimais que variam em massa, quantidade e razão D/H da água. Também consideramos a existência de um ou dois planetas gigantes que influencia(m) a migração de planetesimais mais aquosos para a região de formação de planetas terrestres. Ao final, verificamos a massa, quantidade de água e razão D/H da água dos planetas sobreviventes, focando na formação de planetas dentro da zona habitável de suas estrelas principais. Dos resultados obtidos concluimos que o modelo criado produz valores esperados de massa e quantidade de água para planetas terrestres, além de melhor explicar a razão D/H da água da Terra. Prováveis contribuições relativas para a mesma são de 35-38 % de água localmente absorvida, aproximadamente 60 % de água asteroidal e 2-5 % de água cometária.

S’inspirant des théories de « dégénérescence » avancées par Nordau et Spengler à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, Lawrence pose l’hypothèse d’un déclin physique et moral des individus et des formes sociales collectives en Europe. Il se met donc en quête, à travers le voyage et sa narration, de possibilités de « régénération » que pourraient offrir les lieux et les cultures extra-européens. Ce faisant, il analyse la confrontation entre ses personnages voyageurs européens et l’altérité culturelle qu’ils découvrent, une altérité portée à la fois par les individus étrangers et les sociétés auxquelles ils appartiennent, les lieux et les forces sacrées qui peuplent ces derniers. Lawrence postule que la régénération, ou réanimation, du sujet européen dépend de la capacité du voyageur à se laisser altérer par la puissance étrangère. Chaque œuvre examine ainsi le processus d’altération que subit le sujet européen et qui dépend de divers facteurs, tels que la relation à la patrie, la finalité poursuivie à travers le voyage, la condition sociale, l’éducation, et le genre.L’œuvre lawrencienne s’intéresse en effet majoritairement à la réanimation du sujet féminin et la plupart de ses personnages voyageurs sont des voyageuses non-accompagnées, un choix singulier pour l’époque. Pourtant, Lawrence n’envisage pas d’auto-émancipation du sujet féminin, car sa réanimation n’est possible que grâce à la rencontre érotique avec un autre masculin, porteur d’un monde étranger.Lawrence expérimente toutefois avec diverses formes de régénération, individuelle et collective, politique et spirituelle, susceptibles de contribuer au renouveau de la civilisation occidentale.

Drawing on Nordau and Spengler’s theories of “degeneration” in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Lawrence posits the idea of a physical and moral decline of both individuals and collective social forms in Europe. He therefore sets out, through his personal travels and travel narratives, on a quest for the “regenerative” possibilities which he believes non-European places and cultures may have to offer.His travel writings examine the encounter between his European characters and the cultural otherness they experience abroad in the form of foreign individuals and societies, places and the sacred powers that inhabit those places. Lawrence postulates that the “regeneration” or revitalisation of the European subject is determined by the traveller’s ability to let himself or herself be altered by the power of otherness. Each of his works thus analyses the process of alteration undergone by the European subject, which is affected by various factors such as the latter’s relationship to the home country and the end sought through travel, his social status, education and gender.Lawrence’s works are primarily concerned with the revitalisation of the female subject and most of his travelling characters are in fact unaccompanied female travellers – an uncommon choice at the time. La transformation génétique naturelle est un mode de transfert horizontal de gènes chez les bactéries, qui contribue au maintien et à l'évolution de leurs génomes. C’est un mécanisme clé pour l’adaptation des bactéries, qui pourrait être responsable de la transmission des résistances aux antibiotiques observée en clinique chez certaines espèces pathogènes (S. pneumoniae, H. pylori,…). La transformation naturelle s’effectue par l’internalisation d’ADN exogène à travers la membrane, puis par sa prise en charge jusqu’à son intégration dans le chromosome bactérien par recombinaison homologue. Le processus de prise en charge fait intervenir la protéine DprA, très conservée dans le monde bactérien, impliquée dans la protection de l’ADN entrant contre les nucléases, et dans le recrutement de la recombinase universelle RecA sur l’ADNsb. DprA joue donc un rôle majeur et a récemment été décrite comme étant impliquée dans d’autres aspects de la transformation génétique naturelle, comme la fermeture de la compétence via une interaction directe avec le régulateur de réponse ComE, ou la levée de la barrière du système de restriction-modification afin de faciliter la transformation. Chez H. pylori, DprA est en opéron avec DprB, suggérant l’implication de ces 2 protéines dans une même voie et une interaction directe entre elles. DprA apparaît donc comme étant au cœur d’un véritable réseau d’interaction, protéique et nucléique.

The natural genetic transformation is a mode of horizontal gene transfer that contributes to the maintenance and to the evolution of the genomes in bacteria. It is a key mechanism for their adaptation which could be responsible for the transmission of antibiotic resistances observed clinically for some pathogenic species (S. pneumoniae, H. pylori...). Natural transformation is performed by internalizing exogenous DNA followed by its processing and its integration into the bacterial chromosome by homologous recombination. The DNA processing involves the highly conserved DprA protein for the protection of the incoming DNA against nucleases and the recruitment of the universal recombinase RecA on ssDNA. DprA plays a key role and has recently been suggested to be involved in other aspects of the natural genetic transformation, such as the shut-off of the competence via a direct interaction with the response regulator ComE, or removal of the restriction-modification barrier system in order to facilitate the processing. In H. pylori, the dprA gene is in operon with dprB, whose function is unknown, suggesting their involvement in the same pathway and their likely direct interaction. DprA appears to be central in protein/nucleic acid interactions network.

Cette thèse propose une approche transversale entre différentes disciplines : musicologie historique, musicologie analytique (analyse des œuvres et génétique de l’œuvre) et sociologie des arts (analyse socio-économique et analyse sociologique de la trajectoire de l’œuvre). Les compositeurs de la « Nouvelle Simplicité » sont à l’origine d’un courant compositionnel très large réintégrant les formes musicales traditionnelles dans une interprétation nouvelle, réactivant la fonction de la polarité des consonances et des dissonances. La notion de « simplicité » et les idées qui ont émergé de ce concept ont ainsi été un catalyseur qui a participé à l’établissement du postmodernisme en Allemagne. Toutefois, la génération de la « Nouvelle Simplicité » et leurs idées et concepts en communs ont trouvé une fin brutale avec la chute du mur de Berlin et les changements culturels et politiques induits par ce bouleversement. Les évolutions politiques et la création d’une nouvelle Akademie der Künste Berlin qui représentait une fusion de l’Akademie der Künste Berlin est et ouest ont abouti à une opposition entre deux signataires du premier manifeste de cette génération de compositeurs : W. Rihm, avec son abstention du débat, et H-J. von Bose, avec son retrait de l’Akadémie der Künste Berlin (il sera suivi de plusieurs autres artistes tels que G. Ligeti et G. Baselitz). Cela marque la fin définitive de la collaboration de cette génération de compositeurs.

This thesis proposes a cross-disciplinary approach between: historical musicology, analytical musicology (analysis of pieces and the genetics of the piece) and art sociology (socio- economic analysis and sociological analysis of artistic practice). The "New Simplicity" composers were the source of a very wide compositional current reintegrating traditional musical forms in a new interpretation, reactivating the function of the polarity of consonance and dissonance. The notion of "simplicity" and ideas that emerged from this concept were a catalyst that contributed to the establishment of postmodernism in Germany. However, the generation of the "New Simplicity" and their shared ideas and concepts came to an abrupt end with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the cultural and political changes induced by this upheaval. Political developments and the creation of a new Akademie der Künste Berlin representing a fusion of Akademie der Künste Berlin East and West led to an opposing position between two first manifesto signatories of this generation of composers: W. Rihm with his abstention from the debate and H-J. von Bose with his withdrawal from the Akademie der Künste Berlin in common with many other artists such as G. Ligeti and G. Baselitz, marking the definitive end of the collaboration of this generation of composers.

▼ The Domain Archaea is comprised of prokaryotic organisms known for often living in extreme environments. Despite potential biotechnological uses and their importance to the carbon and nitrogen cycles, archaea are understudied compared to eukaryotes and bacteria. Considering that archaea share features of bacterial RNA regulation (e.g., CRISPRs) and have transcription and translation machinery similar to eukaryotes, elucidating mechanisms of archaeal RNA biology may help us understand the evolution of RNA in the tree of life. For my dissertation I studied archaeal RNAs that contain the kink-turn, an RNA structural motif, with an emphasis on C/D box sRNAs and H/ACA box sRNAs.I used high-throughput RNA sequencing data and RNA bioinformatics to (1) improve detection and explore biological roles of archaeal C/D box sRNAs, (2) improve detection and analysis of H/ACA box sRNAs across the archaea, and (3) survey kink-turn-containing RNAs in archaea. C/D box and H/ACA box sRNAs guide the 2'-O-methylation and pseudouridylation, respectively, of transfer and ribosomal RNAs in archaea and are likely under-annotated. To improve computational detection of C/D box and H/ACA box sRNAs, I incorporated the RNA kink-turn motif into covariance models. My results are supported by comparative genomics, promoter predictions, and small RNA sequencing from 20 diverse archaeal species. I increased the annotations across the archaeal domain and, in particular, increased annotations by 20-30% in the hyperthermophilic species. I also demonstrated that non-canonical forms of H/ACA box sRNAs are not unique to the Pyrobaculum genus, but are widespread across the archaeal domain and compose approximately half of all H/ACA box sRNAs. During my work with C/D box sRNAs, I found that the sequences comprising archaeal kink-turns are likely more diverse than previously thought. The kink-turn motif is a three-dimensional RNA motif ubiquitous across the three domains of life and is a key component of important ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes, such as the ribosome, riboswitches, and small nucleolar RNPs. Recent discoveries of kink-turns in archaeal RNase P and the unusual form of Pyrobaculum H/ACA box sRNAs indicate that there may be kink-turns in RNAs that we have not yet discovered. To improve understanding of this motif, provide data for computational models, and find novel kink-turn containing RNAs, I sequenced RNAs co-immunoprecipitated with the archaeal kink-turn binding protein L7Ae, which has a broad-binding specificity. I used a strain of Thermococcus kodakarensis with a HA-tagged L7Ae for these experiments. I found evidence that kink-turns occur in mRNAs and some annotated non-coding RNAs.
