O objetivo geral deste estudo foi comparar variáveis espaço-temporais e fisiológicas durante o nado crawl com o uso de palmares e nadadeiras. Participaram 11 voluntários do sexo masculino (25,8 ± 5,5 anos de idade, 75,2 ± 5,5 kg de massa corporal e 177 ± 6,5 cm de estatura), nadadores de nível nacional e regional que realizaram dois protocolos distintos de avaliação: nado de 50 m em máxima intensidade e 12 repetições de 50 m em intensidade submáxima (nado intervalado). Ambos os protocolos foram realizados três vezes: nado sem equipamentos (SE), com palmares (CP) e com nadadeiras (CN). Foram coletados dados de desempenho, comprimento médio de braçadas (CB), frequência média de braçadas (FB), velocidade média de nado (VN), duração das fases da braçada (A, B, C, D), índice de coordenação de nado (IdC), frequência média de pernadas (FP), profundidade média de pernada (PP), concentração de lactato [LA] e percepção subjetiva de esforço (PSE). Utilizaram-se filmadoras para obtenção de imagens (60 Hz) subaquáticas dos nados no plano sagital, posteriormente analisadas, e um pacer subaquático luminoso foi utilizado para controle da VN nas séries de nado intervalado nas condições CP e CN e lactímetro portátil foi utilizado para obter as medidas de [LA]. De modo geral, em máxima intensidade palmares alteram [LA] e nadadeiras afetam FB, VN, e [LA]. Em série de nado intervalado, palmares alteram PSE e nadadeiras afetam CB, duração das fases A e C, FP, [LA] e PSE. As áreas de palmares e nadadeiras, relativas às mãos e pés, parecem ser decisivas para os resultados encontrados.

The Main objective of this study was to compare spatio-temporal and physiological variables in the front crawl stroke with paddles and fins. Eleven male volunteers (25.8 ± 5.5 years old, 75.2 ± 5.5 kg of body mass and 177 ± 6.5 cm of height), regional and national level swimmers, performed two different protocols: 50 m all-out and 12 trials of 50 m in sub-maximal intensity (interval training). Both protocols were performed three times: non equipment swimming (NS), paddles swimming (PS) and fins swimming (FS). Performance, means stroke length (SL), stroke frequency (SF), swimming velocity (SV), duration of the phases of the strokes (A, B, C, D), index of coordination (IdC), kick rate (KR) and deep (KD), lactate concentration [LA] and perceived exertion (PE) were obtained. Underwater images (60 Hz) in the sagital plane of the swimming were obtained with camcorders, after these images were analyzed, and an underwater pacer was used to control SV in the interval training for the PS and FS conditions and a portable lactimeter was used to obtain [LA]. In general way, in maximal intensity, paddles change [LA] and fins change SR, SV and [LA]. In interval training, paddles affect PE and fins change SL, duration of phases A and C, KR, [LA] and PE. Paddles and fins areas, relatives to hands and foots, seem to be very decisive in the found results.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the acute responses of biomechanical parameters to different sizes of paddles in front-crawl stroke. Fourteen national competitive male swimmers (Age: 20.0 ± 3.7 years, height: 1.84 ± 0.08 m, body mass: 76.3 ± 8.6 kg, 100- m best time: 53.70 ± 0.87 s) volunteered for this investigation. For the propulsive force evaluation, 02 maximum efforts of 10 s were accomplished in the fully tethered swimming. In each effort, 08 consecutive strokes were analyzed to extract the average value of peak force (Fpeak), mean force (Fmean), explosive force (TDF), impulse (ImpF), stroke duration (DUR), time to peak force (TFpeak) and minimum force (Fmin). Additionally, swimmers accomplished two 25-m maximal swimming in order to measure the average velocity in 15 m (VM15m) (first 07 and last 03m were discarded), the stroke rate (SR15m) and the stroke length (SL15m). Both testing protocols were repeated in 05 conditions: conventional swimming (LVR), wearing small (PP, 280 cm²), medium (PM, 352 cm²), large (PG, 462 cm²) and extra-large paddles (PGG, 552 cm²). The one way ANOVA or the Kruskal-Wallis test were adopted for intersituations comparisons. Possible significant differences were detected by Scheffé post-hoc test (for parametric data) or Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni adjustment (for non-parametric data). The significance level was set at 5%. The artificial enlargement of the hands allowed the swimmers to push off against a bigger mass of water and provided a significant increase of the Fpeak in the comparisons LVR x PG, LVR x PGG and PP x PGG. Because of this, there was also a hand's velocity reduction, which repercuted in a greater DUR in these same comparisons. The Fmean and/or the TDF did not change significantly due to the concomitant modifications of the kinetic and temporal variables that influence them. This result of the TDF, associated to the increase of the ImpF (the main variable related to swimming velocity) in the comparisons LVR x PG, LVR x PGG and PP x PGG, might indicate that PG and PGG propitiate the development of propulsion without any apparent damage in the swimmer's explosiveness. The TFpeak increased from LVR to PGG and from PP to PGG due to the increase of the Fpeak and the decrease of Fmin. The Fmin decrease significantly only from LVR to PGG, pointing to a possible modification in the relation between the beginning and the end of propulsion of both arms. The absence of significant changes in the VM15m might be related to the wave drag increase. The SR15m decrease significantly from LVR to PGG, while the SL15m presented exactly the inverse behavior. The purpose of the present study was to record the underwater stroke kinematics of front crawl swimmers and to investigate possible modifications in the sweepback and pitch angles of the hand in front crawl swimming using different sized hand paddles. Ten female competitive freestyle swimmers performed three maximal trials of 25m with and without hand paddles of two different sizes (small paddles: 116cm2, large paddles: 268cm2). The underwater motion of each subject’s right arm was filmed using four S-VHS cameras, operating at 60 fields/s, which were positioned per two at an angle of 40 degrees behind of 4 stationary periscopes systems. The spatial coordinates of selected points were calculated using the DLT procedure with 24 control points and after the digital filtering of the raw data with a cutoff frequency of 6 Hz. For the statistical treatment of the data the analysis of variance for dependent samples with one within subject factor was used. The analysis of the data revealed that as the size of swimming paddles is increased, are not altered the pitch angle and the sweepback angle of the hand in the individual phases of the underwater stroke. The time to complete the underwater arm stroke (F2,18 = 12.831; p < 0.05) and the total arm stroke (F2,18 = 18.133; p < 0.05) were significantly increased. The medial displacement of the hand during the outsweep, insweep and push phase were slightly reduced while medial hand velocity during the insweep (F2,18 = 80.662; p < 0.05) and the push (F2,18 = 18.242; p < 0.05) phase were greatly reduced when paddles were worn. Moreover, the stroke length (F2,18 = 24.738; p < 0.05) was greatly increased and especially when large paddles were worn the stroke rate (F2,18 = 14.724; p < 0.05) was greatly reduced and the mean swimming velocity (F2,18 = 4.863; p < 0.05) was greatly increased. Consequently, the relative contribution of drag and lift forces should be remain the same, while the reduced stroke rate and increased stroke length and mean velocity should be attributed to the increased surface area of the swimmers hand

Σκοπός της παρούσας έρευνας ήταν η καταγραφή των κινηματικών χαρακτηριστικών της υποβρύχιας έλξης του χεριού στην ελεύθερη κολύμβηση, η διερεύνηση τυχόν διαφοροποιήσεων όταν χρησιμοποιούνται κολυμβητικά χεράκια διαφορετικού μεγέθους και ο προσδιορισμός των γωνιών προσανατολισμού του χεριού κατά τη διάρκεια της έλξης με ή χωρίς κολυμβητικά χεράκια. Δείγμα της έρευνας αποτέλεσαν 10 κολυμβήτριες ελεύθερου στυλ κολύμβησης, αγωνιστικών κατηγοριών, οι οποίες κολύμπησαν μια απόσταση 25m με μέγιστη ένταση (100%), μια φορά χωρίς κολυμβητικά χεράκια, μια φορά με κολυμβητικά χεράκια μικρού μεγέθους (116 cm2) και μια φορά με κολυμβητικά χεράκια μεγάλου μεγέθους (286 cm2).
