La proton thérapie est une modalité de traitement du cancer qu’utilise des faisceaux de protons. Les systèmes de planification de traitement actuels se basent sur une image de l’anatomie du patient acquise par tomodensitométrie. Le pouvoir d’arrêt des protons relatif à l’eau (Stopping Power Ratio en Anglais, SPR) est déterminé à partir des unités Hounsfield (Hounsfield Units en Anglais, HU) pour calculer la dose absorbée au patient. Les protons sont plus vulnérables que les photons aux modifications du SPR du tissu dans la direction du faisceau dues au mouvement, désalignement ou changements anatomiques. De plus, les inexactitudes survenues de la CT de planification et intrinsèques à la conversion HU-SPR contribuent énormément à l’incertitude de la portée des protons. Dans la pratique clinique, au volume de traitement s’ajoutent des marges de sécurité pour tenir en compte ces incertitudes en détriment de perdre la capacité d’épargner les tissus autour de la tumeur. L’usage de l’imagerie bi-énergie en proton thérapie a été proposé pour la première fois en 2009 pour mieux estimer le SPR du patient par rapport à l’imagerie mono-énergie. Le but de cette thèse est d’étudier la potentielle amélioration de l’estimation du SPR des protons en utilisant l’imagerie bi-énergie, pour ainsi réduire l’incertitude dans la prédiction de la portée des protons dans le patient. Cette thèse est appliquée à un nouveau système d’imagerie, l’Imaging Ring (IR), un scanner de tomodensitométrie conique (Cone-Beam CT en Anglais, CBCT) développé pour la radiothérapie guidée par l’image. L’IR est équipé d’une source de rayons X avec un système d’alternance rapide du voltage, synchronisé avec une roue contenant des filtres de différents matériaux que permet des acquisitions CBCT multi-énergie. La première contribution est une méthode pour calibrer les modèles de source et la réponse du détecteur pour être utilisés en simulations d’imagerie X. Deuxièmement, les recherches ont évalué les facteurs que peuvent avoir un impact sur les résultats du procès de décomposition bi-énergie, dès paramètres d’acquisition au post-traitement. Les deux domaines, image et basée en la projection, ont été minutieusement étudiés, avec un spéciale accent aux approches basés en la projection. Deux nouvelles bases de décomposition ont été proposées pour estimer le SPR, sans avoir besoin d’une variable intermédiaire comme le nombre atomique effectif. La dernière partie propose une estimation du SPR des fantômes de caractérisation tissulaire et d’un fantôme anthropomorphique à partir d’acquisitions avec l’IR. Il a été implémentée une correction du diffusé, et il a été proposée une routine pour interpoler linéairement les sinogrammes de basse et haute énergie des acquisitions bi-énergie pour pouvoir réaliser des décompositions en matériaux avec données réelles. Les valeurs réconstruits du SPR ont été comparées aux valeurs du SPR expérimentales déterminés avec un faisceau d’ions de carbone.

▼ Proton radiation therapy is gaining popularity because of the unique characteristics of its dose distribution, e.g., high dose-gradient at the distal end of the percentage-depth-dose curve (known as the Bragg peak). The high dose-gradient offers the possibility of delivering high dose to the target while still sparing critical organs distal to the target. However, the high dose-gradient is a double-edged sword: a small shift of the highly conformal high-dose area can cause the target to be substantially under-dosed or the critical organs to be substantially over-dosed. Because of that, large margins are required in treatment planning to ensure adequate dose coverage of the target, which prevents us from realizing the full potential of proton beams. Therefore, it is critical to reduce uncertainties in the proton radiation therapy. One major uncertainty in a proton treatment is the range uncertainty related to the estimation of proton stopping power ratio (SPR) distribution inside a patient. The SPR distribution inside a patient is required to account for tissue heterogeneities when calculating dose distribution inside the patient. In current clinical practice, the SPR distribution inside a patient is estimated from the patient’s treatment planning computed tomography (CT) images based on the CT number-to-SPR calibration curve. The SPR derived from a single CT number carries large uncertainties in the presence of human tissue composition variations, which is the major drawback of the current SPR estimation method. We propose to solve this problem by using dual energy CT (DECT) and hypothesize that the range uncertainty can be reduced by a factor of two from currently used value of 3.5%. A MATLAB program was developed to calculate the electron density ratio (EDR) and effective atomic number (EAN) from two CT measurements of the same object. An empirical relationship was discovered between mean excitation energies and EANs existing in human body tissues. With the MATLAB program and the empirical relationship, a DECT-based method was successfully developed to derive SPRs for human body tissues (the DECT method). The DECT method is more robust against the uncertainties in human tissues compositions than the current single-CT-based method, because the DECT method incorporated both density and elemental composition information in the SPR estimation. Furthermore, we studied practical limitations of the DECT method. We found that the accuracy of the DECT method using conventional kV-kV x-ray pair is susceptible to CT number variations, which compromises the theoretical advantage of the DECT method. Our solution to this problem is to use a different x-ray pair for the DECT. The accuracy of the DECT method using different combinations of x-ray energies, i.e., the kV-kV, kV-MV and MV-MV pair, was compared using the measured imaging uncertainties for each case. ▼ Die Problematik der aktuell batteriebetriebenen Elektrofahrzeuge liegt in der geringen Reichweite, einem geringen Fahrtgastkomfort, sowie den langen Ladezeiten und einer nicht ausreichenden Ladeinfrastruktur. Diese Tatsachen stellen für die Nutzer eine Hürde für den Umstieg zu batteriebetriebenen Fahrzeugen dar. Eine schon heute verfügbare Brückentechnologie ist der Range Extender. Diese, meist im Fahrzeug integrierten Einheiten, liefern zusätzliche Reichweite, bei einer elektrischen Leistung von meist über 15 kWel und einem durchschnittlichen Anlagenwirkungsgrad von Ƞ RE ≈ 29 %. In dieser Arbeit wird ein modulares Konzept eines erweiterten Range Extenders untersucht, welches die Funktion der Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung und Kraft-Kälte-Kopplung nutzt. Diese Hilfseinheit soll zum einen den Nachteil der geringen Reichweite aufgrund der eingeschränkten Batteriekapazitäten, zum anderen den geringen thermischen Innenraumkomfort von batteriebetriebenen Fahrzeugen ausgleichen. Das Konzept einer Kraftwärme/-kältekopplung zur Klimatisierung von BEV wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit mit Hilfe eines Versuchsaufbaus messtechnisch und theoretisch mittels Simulation untersucht, sowie anhand der ermittelten Kennfelder beurteilt. Die Simulation basiert dabei auf empirisch ermittelten Daten. In den gewählten Fahrzeugklassen Kleinstwagen, Kompakt- und Mittelklasse wird der mittlere Gesamtwirkungsgrad der Anlagenkomponenten in Abhängigkeit von Klimadaten (Wetterdaten) bestimmt. Dieser ermittelte Wirkungsgrad ist abhängig von äußeren thermischen Anforderungen und der Ausnutzung der Anlagenkomponenten. Der modulierbare Leistungsbereich des mikro Blockheizkraftwerks mit Kraft-Kälte-Kopplung hat zum Heizen einen thermischen Leistungsbereich von 5,7 – 13,0 kWthh. Der mechanische Leistungsbereich von 2,0 - 14,5 kWme wird in zwei Bereiche aufgeteilt. Zur Kühlung wird ein thermischer Bereich von 1,0 – 7,0 kWthk und zur elektrischen Stromerzeugung ein Leistungsbereich von 1,0 – 6,0 kWel verwendet. Basierend auf den in dieser Arbeit experimentell ermittelten Kennfeldern, die unter Berücksichtigung der lokalen klimatischen Bedingungen in Deutschland berechnet wurden, kann der Anlagenwirkungsgrad für Kleinstwagen mit Ƞ Kl = 58,9 ± 3,5 %, für die Kompaktklasse mit Ƞ Ko = 62,2 ± 5,5 % und für die Mittelklasse mit durchschnittlich Ƞ Mk = 65,2 ± 4,8 % ermittelt werden. Die zusätzlich gewonnenen Reichweiten, die durch Einsparung von batterieelektrischer Energie für die Klimatisierung und durch Einspeisung von erzeugter elektrischer Energie erreicht werden, liegen bei den Kleinstwagen bei 246 ± 31 km, in der Kompaktklasse bei 296 ± 103 km und in der Mittelklasse bei 314 ± 104 km. Eine Abtrennung des Klimakompressors von der Verbrennungskraftmaschine führt dabei zusätzlich zu einer teilweisen Verbesserung der ermittelten Werte. Im Vergleich dazu, lässt sich ein durchschnittlicher Reichweitenzuwachs von 103 km, ohne den Einsatz eines Kraftstoffes, nur durch Nutzung eines effizienteren Systems erreichen, wenn eine Wärmepumpe eingesetzt wird. ▼ Contactless Power Transfer (CPT) is the process of transferring power between two or more physically unconnected electric circuits or devices by means of magnetic induction. The potential application of CPT can range from power transfer to low power home and office appliances to high power industrial systems. Medical, marine, transportation, battery charging applications where physical connections are either dangerous or impossible or inconvenient are all prospective candidates for use of this technology. This thesis mainly concentrates on development of fundamental theory of CPT and application of CPT technology in achieving driving range extension of Electric Vehicles (EV). The work in this thesis can be divided into three broad categories which are, analysis and development of design criteria of a CPT system, experimental and practical implementation, and range extension studies with on-road charging of EVs using CPT technology. The main component of a CPT system is the specially constructed transformer with a large air gap between the primary and secondary winding. In order to achieve efficient power transfer through this large air gap, the principle of resonance is used. To increase the power transfer capability and to reduce the VA rating of the CPT system, capacitive compensation is used in both primary and secondary winding. In this regard, Series-Series (SS), Series-Parallel (SP), Parallel-Series (PS) and Parallel-Parallel (PP) topologies are analysed and design criteria for efficient and stable operation are presented. Constant current mode and constant voltage mode operation of SS compensated system are discussed and it is concluded that SS compensation topology is the most suitable topology for battery charging application. Power electronic requirements for efficient power transfer are investigated and it is concluded that use of active rectifiers in the output stage provide more controlling options and higher power transfer efficiency. To test the many analytically deduced design considerations and feasibility of a CPT system with respect to the efficiency of power transfer, an experimental setup is built. The efficiency of power transfer was measured to be close to 91%. But since DC power is required at the output to accomplish battery charging process, full bridge diode rectifier is employed in the output stage causing additional losses in the system which brings down the overall efficiency of system to 83.2%. To reduce losses in the rectifier stage, use of active rectifier is recommended. Later, CPT charging process is successfully demonstrated on MagIC (Magnetically Induced Charging) car, which is a radio controlled car with super capacitors acting as the on-board energy storage. Due to the multitude of advantages associated with CPT technology, the use of this technology in EV charging application is considered. ▼ Life expectancy is increasing, but with advanced age comes an elevated risk for sustaining a fall. Individuals with sarcopenia have been shown to fall more frequently, however the mechanism behind this remains unknown. The focus of this dissertation was to examine properties of muscle related to rapid volitional movement. Over the course of four experiments both age-related and sex effects were explored. Measurements were obtained through kinetic, kinematic, anthropometric, and clinical tests. A large focus was on knee extensor muscles due to their importance in activities of daily living, however arm movements during a handrail grasping task were also examined. Young adults were stronger and more powerful than older adults at maximum voluntary knee extension and these increased abilities were associated with larger rates of torque and velocity development. A major age-related difference was a decreased maximal velocity in the older adults relative to the young adults, which was observed in a knee extension task and center of mass velocity during a voluntary reactive task. Males were stronger, faster, and more powerful for nearly every metric examined, however, they were also on average taller, heavier, and leaner than the females. These anthropometric differences are key factors in the observed sex-related differences. Body composition analyses revealed that no older adult tested was classified as sarcopenic, however individuals with low grip-strength were shown to have proportionately lower muscle quality than their peers. Grip strength was significantly correlated to dual task Timed Up and Go time and several reactive movement metrics (e.g. total movement time, peak lateral centre of mass velocity, and total 3-dimensional movement) during a lateral handrail grasping task executed during forward walking. Collective results from this dissertation suggest that older individuals interested in reducing falls risk should consider participation in physical activities that not only promote strength gains but do so with high velocity movements. We also encourage future studies and clinicians to consider incorporating both grip strength and dual-task Timed Up and Go into their protocols as very simple measurements that could aid in the identification of individuals who may be at a greater risk for injurious falls. ▼ A phase-domain analog-to-digital converter (PhADC) is a promising alternative to a pair of amplitude-domain in-phase and quadrature (IQ) ADCs for low power FSK/PSK demodulation, but due to the nonlinear amplitude-to-phase conversion, IQ offsets and gain mismatch can produce nonlinear phase distortions which that can lead to phase errors and an increase in bit-error rate (BER). An IQ offset and gain mismatch detection technique is developed for PhADCs and verified. The offset and gain mismatch is estimated by detecting the phase vector distribution imbalance among the four phase quadrants after the analog-to-phase conversion. A feedback path has been constructed between the PhADC output and the offset/mismatch compensation interface. The closed loop will help the compensation interface to settle to the proper compensation values of the offset and mismatch. Incorporating this cancellation loop in a receiver system can improve its sensitivity and robustness. In a conventional IQ ADC receiver we have two quantizations, i.e., one for I and one for Q, and then process the information to extract the phase. By contrast, the PhADC, due to its embedded demodulation attribute, performs only phase quantization. So only one quantization is needed. Because of its compactness, the hardware is simpler and thereby consumes less energy. Moreover the PhADC is immune to magnitude variations, because in an IQ ADC, amplitude quantization noise produces larger phase quantization noise at small vector magnitudes, while in a PhADC a larger vector has the same phase quantization error as a small vector. Because of these advantages the PhADC is a very good candidate for low power communication. A detection algorithm has been developed that detects the phase vector distribution imbalance between the left and right IQ complex half plane in case of I offset and between the top and bottom of IQ complex half plane in case of Q offset. Using this imbalance we can determine the sign and size of IQ offset. A similar approach has been done for IQ gain mismatch, where the phase vector distribution imbalance is detected between the four phase quadrants in the IQ complex plane. A mixed-signal approach, i.e., detecting the offset and mismatch in the digital domain and compensate in the analog domain. It is well known that in the IQ ADC receiver the offset and mismatch can be detected and calibrated if necessary before the amplitude is converted into phase in the digital domain, but in the PhADC receiver the offset and mismatch cannot be determined directly due to the absence of amplitude information. Here, we use phase information rather than amplitude information for detection and compensation. For this reason, we have created a direct mismatch and offset detection technique using the output phase signal of the PhADC. ▼ In this dissertation, several approaches to improve the efficiency and sensitivity of wireless power transfer and wireless power harvesting systems, and to enhance their performance in fluctuant and unpredictable circumstances are described. Firstly, a nonlinear resonance circuit described by second-order differential equation with cubic-order nonlinearities (the Duffing equation) is developed. The Duffing nonlinear resonance circuit has significantly wider bandwidth as compared to conventional linear resonators, while achieving a similar level of amplitude. The Duffing resonator is successfully applied to the design of WPT systems to improve their tolerance to coupling factor variations stemming from changes of transmission distance and alignment of coupled coils. Subsequently, a high sensitivity wireless power harvester which collects RF energy from AM broadcast stations for powering the wireless sensors in structural health monitoring systems is introduced. The harvester demonstrates the capability of providing net RF power within 6 miles away from a local 50 kW AM station. The aforementioned Duffing resonator is also used in the design of WPH systems to improve their tolerance to frequency misalignment resulting from component aging, coupling to surrounding objects or variations of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.). At last, a rectifier array circuit with an adaptive power distribution method for wide dynamic range operation is developed. Adaptive power distribution is achieved through impedance transformation of the rectifiers’ nonlinear impedance with a passive network. The rectifier array achieves high RF-to-DC efficiency within a wide range of input power levels, and is useful in both WPT and WPH applications where levels of the RF power collected by the receiver are subject to unpredictable fluctuations. ▼ Electric vehicles are a promising option for future transportation. The technology related to these have undergone rapid development over the last two decades and there are now many commercial electric vehicles available on the market. However, consumers still suffer from the "range anxiety" due to the limited driving range and long recharging time (refuelling time) compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Wireless charging is an alternative recharging option; currently the usual recharging method uses plug-in charging. With wireless charging, the connection between grid and vehicle can be established in less than a second without any manual operation. Therefore, recharging EVs can take place during a short stop or in motion. This means that there are more recharging windows available during vehicle use which would effectively extend the range of the vehicle and reduce consumers "range anxiety". This work is divided into three parts. The first part addresses the background and reviews the literature on EV recharging technologies. This is formed from first two chapters: Chapter 1 provides the introduction and outline of this thesis; Chapter 2 puts forward a literature review of the state of the art of recharging technology. The design of the wireless charging coupler is reviewed in this chapter. The second part is the study of the inductive charging system. Chapter 3 introduces the wireless charging pad analysis, which includes a circular pad and a rectangular pad analysis. The parameters of the pads are analysed. An analytical and numerical combined method for resistance analysis is introduced to wireless charging coupler resistance analysis which is the first contribution of this research. And Chapter 4 proposes a pad geometry with assistive coils which is a new arrangement that improves the coil coupling which is the secondary contribution of this study. Chapter 5 analyses the inductive power transfer system at circuit level, and experiment validation is carried out. Finally, conclusions and future work are given in Chapter 6.

▼ Wireless sensing of electrophysiological signals in day-to-day life, outside the well-controlled clinical or laboratory setting requires the sensor to detect tiny signals (with a resolution of a few μV), while avoiding clipping or saturation for approximately 100mV of non-stationary interferers. A dynamic range of 100dB is required from the analog front end to avoid saturation under the presence of the interferer. At the same time, the sensor is also required to provide a low input-referred noise, making a high-gain, low-noise amplifier indispensable. High gain and high dynamic range are difficult to achieve at the same time with conventional voltage-domain amplifiers, because the output gets limited by the supply voltage. We, therefore, propose to process the input electrophysiological signal in the phase domain, since there is no physical bound on phase. In this work, we directly digitize the input using a VCO-based ADC, that meets the required resolution and input-referred noise constraints for biosignal recording. The proposed front end provides a μV-level resolution for the signal, while maintaining a saturation-tolerance to 200mV_p-p interferers, 20-times higher than conventional designs. The power, noise and area of the front end is comparable to that of state-of-the-art biosignal recording systems.Robust, low-power signal acquisition is just one half of the story of building a power-efficient recording interface. In many cases it is extremely inefficient, if not impossible, to transmit the large amount of data that is collected by the sensor array. High data rate is a particularly acute problem for implantable action-potential recording systems because of their high sampling rates, large number of channels, and stringent power consumption requirements. To solve this problem, we would need to process the data locally and transmit only the computed results. Spike sorting, the process of classifying the recorded action potentials according to their source neurons, is a common post-processing step for action-potential data and provides a significant data-rate reduction. In this work, we used various algorithm and architecture-level techniques to design power-efficient, multi-channel spike-sorting ASICs. These chips consume only a few μW/channel of power and achieve about 200-times reduction in the output data rate, making it possible to support wireless data transmission for multiple channels. To demonstrate the functionality of this work in a practical use-case scenario, we developed quarter/nickel-sized prototype motes that can allow several hours of wireless biosignal recording. These motes are currently being used for neural recordings from rats by our collaborators in the UCLA neurology department. Future generations of the mote would directly interface to a cellular phone.

▼ Low-cost radio frequency (RF) communication circuits are frequently fabricated in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. As system-on-chip and system-in-package designs are becoming increasingly complicated, the manufacturing test cost is continuing to make up a larger portion of the total product cost while the need for built-in testing and calibration methods rises to ensure reliable operation during the lifetimes of chips. Accordingly, on-chip performance monitoring of individual analog blocks within RF chips is beneficial for identification of faulty devices and system-level self-calibration.; A non-intrusive built-in testing method for on-chip performance monitoring of analog/RF integrated circuits is advanced in this research. A sensor circuit was designed to monitor signal power dissipation and linearity characteristics based on electro-thermal coupling instead of an electrical connection in order to avoid impact on the performance of the device under test (DUT). With this approach, a bipolar junction transistor is placed in the vicinity of the DUT as thermal detector. The sensor circuit transmits a detected temperature change that reflects the power dissipation in the DUT. Two amplifiers are used in the sensor core to process the currents from the temperature-sensing transistors. In this thesis, a class AB output stage was developed for these amplifiers, which allowed to extend the dynamic range and enhance the sensitivity of the sensor circuit. Designed in 0.18μ CMOS technology, one version of the temperature sensor has a simulated sensitivity up to 207.1mV/°C while consuming 2.23mW of power. A low-power version has a simulated sensitivity of 185.7mV/°C with 1.13mW power consumption. The sensor was re-designed in 0.11μm CMOS technology for fabrication of a prototype chip with a power consumption of 0.6mW. This sensor has a measured sensitivity of 395.4mV/mW to power dissipation in a DUT that is located in its vicinity on the chip.

▼ Non-Destructive Testing of industrial components carries vital importance, both financially and safety-wise. Among all Non-Destructive techniques, Long Range Ultrasonic Testing utilizing the guided wave phenomena is a young technology proven to be commercially valid. Owing to its well-documented analytical models, Ultrasonic Guided Waves has been successfully applied to cylindrical and plate-like structures. Its applications to complex structures such as multi-wire cables are fairly immature, mainly due to the high complexity of wave propagation. Research performed by the author approaches the long range inspection of overhead transmission line cables using ultrasonic guided waves. Existing studies focusing on guided wave application on power cables are extremely limited in inspection range, which dramatically degrades its chances of commercialization. This thesis consists of three main chapters, all of which approaches different problems associated with the inspection of power cables. In the first chapter, a thorough analysis of wave propagation in ACSR (most widely used power cable) cables is conducted. It is shown that high frequency guided waves, by concentrating the energy on the surface layers, can travel much further in the form of fundamental longitudinal wave mode, than previous studies have shown. Defect detection studies proved the system’s capability of detecting defects which introduce either increase or decrease in cross sectional area of the cable. Results of the chapter indicate the detectability of defects as small as 4.5% of the cross sectional area through a 26.5 meter long cable without any post-processing. In the second chapter, several algorithms are proposed to increase the inspection range and signal quality. Well-documented wavelet-denoising algorithm is optimized for power cables and up to 24% signal-to-noise ratio improvement is achieved. By introducing an attenuation correction framework, a theoretical inspection range of 75 meters is presented. A new framework combining dispersion compensation and attenuation correction is proposed and verified, which shows an inspection range of 130 meters and SNR improvement up to 8 dBs. Last chapter addresses the accurate localization of structural defects. Having proven the optimum excitation and related wave propagation in ACSR cables, a system having a more complex wave propagation characteristics is studied. A new algorithm combining pulse compression using Maximal Length Sequences and dispersion compensation is applied to multi-modal signals obtained from a solid aluminum rod. The algorithm proved to be able to improve signal quality and extract an accurate location for defects. Maximal Length Sequences are compared to chirp signals in terms of SNR improvement and localization, which produced favourable results for MLS in terms of localization and for chirp in terms of SNR improvement.

L'avènement de l'Internet des Objets a permis de déployer de nombreux réseaux de capteurs sans-fil. Ces réseaux sont utilisés dans des domaines aussi variés que l'agriculture, l'industrie ou la ville intelligente, où ils permettent d'optimiser finement les processus. Ces appareils sont le plus souvent alimentés par des piles ou batteries, ce qui limite leur autonomie. De plus, il n'est pas toujours possible ou financièrement viable de changer ou recharger les batteries. Une solution possible est d'alimenter ces capteurs en récupérant l'énergie présente dans l'environnement alentour. Ces sources d'énergie sont cependant peu fiables, et le capteur doit être capable d'éviter de vider complètement sa réserve d'énergie. Afin de moduler sa consommation d'énergie, le capteur peut adapter sa qualité de service à ses capacités énergétiques. L'appareil peut ainsi fonctionner en continu sans interruption de service. Cette thèse présente les méthodes utilisées pour la conception d'un capteur entièrement autonome alimenté par récupération d'énergie ambiante, communiquant sur un réseau longue portée LoRa. Afin d'assurer l'alimentation électrique, une carte permettant de récupérer de l'énergie depuis plusieurs sources d'énergie simultanément a été conçue. Un module logiciel de gestion d'énergie a ensuite été développé afin de calculer un budget énergétique que le capteur peut dépenser, et choisir la meilleure manière de dépenser ce budget pour exécuter une ou plusieurs tâches. Ce travail a ainsi permis le développement d'un prototype de produit industriel entièrement autonome en énergie.

The advent of the Internet of Things has enabled the roll-out of a multitude of Wireless Sensor Networks. These networks can be used in various fields, such as agriculture, industry or the smart city, where they facilitate fine optimization of processes. These devices are often powered by primary or rechargeable batteries, which limits their battery life. Moreover, it is sometimes not possible or financially viable to change and/or recharge these batteries. A possible solution is to harvest energy from the environment to power these sensors. But these energy sources are unreliable, and the sensor must be able to prevent the complete depletion of its energy storage. In order to adapt its energy consumption, the node can match its quality of service to its energetical capabilities. Thus, the device can continuously operate without any service interruption. This thesis presents the methods used for the conception of a completely autonomous sensor, powered by energy harvesting and communicating through a long range LoRa network. In order to ensure its power supply, a board has been designed to harvest energy from multiple energy sources simultaneously. A power management software module has then been developed to calculate an energy budget the sensor can use, and to choose the best way to spend this budget over one or multiple tasks. This work has enabled the development of an energy autonomous industrial sensor prototype.

▼ Understanding variability and unpredictability of wind power is essential for improving power system reliability and energy dispatch in transmission and distribution systems. The research presented herein intends to address a major challenge in managing and utilizing wind energy with mitigated fluctuation and intermittency. Caused by the varying wind speed, power variability can be explained as power imbalances. These imbalances create power surplus or deficiency in respect to the desired demand. To ameliorate the aforementioned issue, the fluctuating wind energy needs to be properly quantified, controlled, and re-distributed to the grid. The first major study in this dissertations is to develop accurate wind turbine models and model reductions to generate wind power time-series in a laboratory time-efficient manner. Reliable wind turbine models can also perform power control events and acquire dynamic responses more realistic to a real-world condition. Therefore, a Type 4 direct-drive wind turbine with power electronic converters has been modeled and designed with detailed aerodynamic and electric parameters based on a given generator. Later, using averaging and approximation techniques for power electronic circuits, the order of the original model is lowered to boost the computational efficiency for simulating long-term wind speed data. To quantify the wind power time-series, efforts are made to enhance adaptability and robustness of the original conditional range metric (CRM) algorithm that has been proposed by literatures for quantitatively assessing the power variability within a certain time frame. The improved CRM performs better under scarce and noisy time-series data with a reduced computational complexity. Rather than using a discrete probability model, the improved method implements a continuous gamma distribution with parameters estimated by the maximum likelihood estimators. With the leverage from the aforementioned work, a wind farm level behavior can be revealed by analyzing the data through long-term simulations using individual wind turbine models. Mitigating the power variability by reserved generation sources is attempted and the generation scenarios are generalized using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm regarding power correlations of those individual wind turbines. A systematic blueprint for reducing intra-hour power variations via coordinating a fast- and a slow- response energy storage systems (ESS) has been proposed. Methods for sizing, coordination control, ESS regulation, and power dispatch schemes are illustrated in detail. Applying the real-world data, these methods have been demonstrated desirable for reducing short-term wind power variability to an expected level. Introduction: Warm up in soccer contributes to performance maximization and injury prevention. Purpose: The research was divided into two studies. The first study examined the effect of an exercise program used before warm-up on preparation and injury prevention, while the second examined the effect of this program in combination with traditional soccer warm-up on various performance skills, as well as the results duration. Method: In the first study, twenty-three amateur footballers were divided into two groups. The control group performed 5-minute cycling and the experimental group a 22-minute program included muscle activation and neuromuscular control exercises. Both groups were evaluated on performance indicators, such as hip flexion (ROM), countermovement jump with hands akimbo (CMJ) and free (CMJFREE), knee flexors and extensors muscles peak torque (PT) at 600/sec and 1800/sec, as well as on injury assessment indicators (conventional-CON H/Q and functional isokinetic strength ratio-FUN H/Q). In the second study, sixteen semi-professional footballers applied the first study program in combination with the traditional warm-up, which was used as a control program and evaluated in ROM, CMJ, CMJFREE, speed, change direction speed (COD) and the ability to perform repetitive sprints (RSA), just after the protocols execution and 15 minutes later. Results: The results of the first study showed a significant improvement on ROM, CMJ and knee flexors and extensors concentric PT of dominant leg at 1800/sec in the experimental group and on CMJ in the control group. A significant reduction was observed in FUN H/Q at 1800/sec in the same leg in experimental group. The results of the second study showed a significant improvement on ROM, decrease on CMJ after both protocols, while a period of 15 minutes showed a significant performance reduction on CMJ and CMJFREE after the combined warm-up program. Also, the same period resulted in significant reduction on ROM, CMJFREE and COD to the left after classic warm-up application. Conclusions: The program with exercises applied before the warm-up, with an eccentric strength increase, can be used in soccer players’ preparation. However, the combination with the classic warm-up does not seem to favor players’ performance due, mainly, to the fatigue, while the period of 15 minutes causes a reduction in performance.

Εισαγωγή: Η προθέρμανση στο ποδόσφαιρο συμβάλει στη μεγιστοποίηση της απόδοσης και στην πρόληψη κινδύνου τραυματισμών. Σκοπός: Η έρευνα χωρίστηκε σε δύο μελέτες. Les travaux présentés ici proposent des convertisseurs d’énergie à haut rendement et très large dynamique de tension d’entrée, c'est-à-dire capables de fonctionner avec un rendement énergétique élevé sur une plage de tension d’entrée étendue (typiquement de 9V à 200V). De multiples tensions de réseaux sont standards dans l’industrie : elles sont spécifiques à un domaine (aéronautique, ferroviaire, …) et dépendent de la source primaire d’alimentation électrique (batterie d’accumulateurs, génératrice, …). Au sein d’un équipement embarqué, plusieurs réseaux peuvent cohabiter : une alimentation principale 110V et une alimentation de secours sur batterie 12V, par exemple. Le besoin de convertisseurs large dynamique d’entrée est donc une réalité, mais il n’existe sur le marché que peu de convertisseurs capables de réaliser une dynamique d’entrée supérieure à dix. Dans un premier temps, nous avons étudié les enjeux et les problématiques liés à la large dynamique d’entrée, afin de mieux cerner les limitations des topologies de puissance classiques. Nous avons ensuite traité le cas d’une architecture de conversion d’énergie de type série, dont nous avons amélioré le rendement énergétique grâce à l’utilisation de circuits d’aide à la commutation. Cette solution ayant des performances limitées, nous avons proposé de nouvelles architectures de convertisseurs DC/DC, de type parallèle, capables de supporter des dynamiques de tension d’entrée supérieures à vingt et ayant un rendement énergétique élevé (supérieur à 80%). Nous avons également étudié et mis en œuvre des stratégies de commande, numériques et analogiques, permettant de contrôler ces nouvelles topologies complexes.

Power converters are present in virtually every embedded system, but many standards of DC networks exist: the supply voltage is depending on how the power is generated (battery, alternator …) and can range from 12V to more than 115V. When an equipment must comply with a 110V main supply and 12V back-up supply, the use of a wide input voltage range DC/DC converter is mandatory. Since classical switched mode power converters cannot achieve simultaneously high efficiency and wide input voltage range, manufacturers rarely propose DC/DC converters with an input voltage range greater than 10. This work tackles the issue of wide input voltage power conversion. After discussing about designs trade off and problems that stem from a wide input range, we try to improve the overall efficiency of a classical buck-boost converter, by using non dissipative switching-aid circuits. We also proposed a novel two stages power converter capable of dealing with very wide input voltage ranges (more than 20), without a reduction of the power efficiency. Since those new converters are far more difficult to control, some theoretical analysis was performed and some practical tests were done using complex controls laws.

[pt] Atualmente, o fenômeno de instabilidade de tensão representa uma das principais barreiras à operação estável das redes de energia elétrica, que tendem a crescer e a se tornarem cada vez mais interconectadas. A dificuldade de manter um perfil de tensão aceitável aumenta substancialmente e a estabilidade de tensão na operação dos sistemas elétricos deve ser preservada ao máximo, a fim de evitar os graves efeitos que a sua perda acarreta ao sistema. Esta dissertação atua na operação do sistema de energia elétrica, mais especificamente na área de operação em tempo real, onde é importante se conhecer a proximidade da condição operativa atual do sistema daquela que corresponde ao ponto crítico de estabilidade. Tal conhecimento permite que ações preventivas sejam realizadas no sentido de se evitar a instabilidade. O objetivo do trabalho é, a partir da comparação entre a margem sistêmica e a margem nodal, calculadas respectivamente pelo Fluxo de Potência Continuado e pelo método da Matriz D, determinar um critério para a margem de capacidade de carga, do ponto de vista de estabilidade de tensão, para a operação segura. No evento de cada contingência, calcula-se o maior crescimento de carga (margem), a partir do caso base, onde os índices nodais ainda são positivos. Define-se como margem mínima a menor dessas margens. A abordagem proposta foi avaliada através dos resultados obtidos com uma versão modificada do chamado sistema Nordic32.

[en] Currently, the phenomenon of voltage instability represents one of the main barriers to the stable operation of electric power networks, which tend to grow and become increasingly interconnected. The difficulty of maintaining an acceptable voltage profile increases substantially and the voltage stability in the operation of the electrical systems must be preserved to the maximum extent in order to avoid the serious effects that its loss entails on the system. This dissertation works in the operation of the electrical system, more specific in the area of operation in real time, where it is important to know the proximity of the operational condition of the current system that corresponds to the critical point of stability. Such knowledge allows preventive actions to be taken in order to avoid instability. The determination of appropriate margins for the various activities carried out in the electric power systems is not a trivial task, motivating the development of this dissertation. The objective of the work is from the comparison between a systemic margin and the nodal margin, calculated respectively by the Continued Power Flow and by the Matrix D method, to determine a criterion for the load capacity margin from the voltage stability point of view, for safe operation. In the event of each contingency, the largest growth (margin) is calculated from the base case, where the nodal indices are still positive. The smallest margin is defined as the minimum margin. Ces dix dernières années, la miniaturisation des transistors MOS en technologie planaire sur silicium massif connait une augmentation considérable des effets parasites liés à la réduction de la longueur du canal. Ces effets canaux courts ont pour conséquence de dégrader les performances des transistors, rendant les circuits moins efficaces énergétiquement et plus sensibles aux phénomènes de fluctuations des procédés de fabrication. Ainsi, cette technologie fait face à une vraie barrière pour les noeuds inférieurs à 32nm.Pour répondre aux besoins des dispositifs mobiles alliant hautes performances et basse consommation, la technologie planaire sur isolant complètement désertée (FD-SOI pour Fully depleted Silicon-On-Insulator) apparaît comme une solution adaptée. En effet, grâce à son film de silicium mince et non dopé, le transistor MOS dispose d’un meilleur contrôle électrostatique du canal et d’une faible variabilité de sa tension de seuil. De plus, cette technologie offre la possibilité de moduler la tension de seuil des transistors grâce à une polarisation étendue à ±3V des caissons situés sous la fine couche d’oxyde enterré. Ainsi, cette spécificité apporte aux concepteurs de circuits intégrés un levier supplémentaire permettant de moduler les performances d’un circuit ainsi que d’en optimiser son efficacité énergétique.Le travail de recherche de thèse présenté dans ce mémoire a contribué au développement de la plateforme technologique FD-SOI pour les noeuds 28 puis 14nm. Dans un premier temps, l’exploitation d’un chemin critique extrait d’un coeur de processeur ARM Cortex-A9 a permis d’évaluer à la fois les gains intrinsèques apportés par la technologie FD-SOI ainsi que ceux produits par la modulation de la tension de seuil des transistors par polarisation du substrat. Cette technique permet ainsi de diviser jusqu’à 50 fois le courant statique d’un circuit lorsqu’il est inactif, ou encore par 2 l’énergie totale nécessaire à fréquence constante. Ces nombreuses analyses ont permis, dans un second temps, de proposer plusieurs solutions de conception visant une nouvelle fois à optimiser l’efficacité énergétique des circuits intégrés. Parmi celles-ci, la conception d’une structure à caisson unique permet notamment de résoudre les difficultés de co-intégration multi-VT classique, présentes en FD-SOI. Cette approche offre également aux concepteurs une solution performante pour les circuits fonctionnant avec une très large gamme de tensions d’alimentation. En effet, à l’aide d’une seule tension de substrat, les transistors n et p-MOS peuvent être simultanément rééquilibrés permettant ainsi de réduire fortement la tension minimale d’alimentation du circuit.

Over the last ten years, the scaling of MOSFETs in bulk planar technology is experiencing a significant increase in parasitic phenomenon driven by the reduction of the transistor channel length. ▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an eight weeks program ofstatic and dynamic stretching on the range of motion of the joints (ROM) of the lowerlimbs, and the jumping ability and efficiency at maximum power before and after thetraining program. Specifically, the participants examined in the speed of 20 m in thestanding long jump to the Counter Movement jump (CMJ), to drop jumps from 20cm(DJ) in maximum isometric, concentric and eccentric strength. Also examined thekinematic and electromyographic characteristics of jumps (CMJ, DJ) and the forces inthe laboratory. Forty two (42) volunteers participated in this study. Subjects,randomly allocate into 3 groups: 15 to the static stretching group (SS), 15 to thedynamic stretching group (DS) and 12 to the control group (CON). The 8 weeksstretching routine designed to stretch all the major muscle groups in the lowerextremity. Stretches were performed 3 d·wk_1, once per day, held for 10 s, and for 3repetitions. Statistical analysis of variance was used for repeated measurements, withpost-hoc analysis (Tukey's). Significance was set at-p≤0.05. The results showed animprovement of ROM of the lower limbs for both groups. Specifically, the hip flexionincreased for (DS) group at 5.71% and for (SS) group by 6.87%. The hip extentionincreased for (DS) group at 110.27% and for the (SS) group at 117%.The hipabduction increased for (DS) group at 25.60% and for the (SS) group at 11.05%. The knee flexion increased for (DS) group by 5.58% and for (SS) group at 3.28%. We had improved performance on the 20 m Sprint for (DS) group by 7% and for (SS)group at 8.9%, on the standing long jump for (DS) group by 3.37% and for (SS) groupduring 3.9% testing performed outside the laboratory.In the laboratory we measured the DJ and CMJ jumps the results showedimprovements in jump height in both the DJ at 20.83% and 11.25%, and at CMJ at15.26% and 13.05% for both groups (DS) and (SS) respectively. Additionallymaximum power (Pmax) also increased in DJ 20,24% for DS and 14% for SS and in(CMJ) 17,71% for DS and 19,15% for SS, respectively. We also had an effect onkinematic characteristics during the execution of jumps, that changes of the angle,knee and hip replacement which show changes to the technical of the jumps. We hadno changes in electromyographic characteristics of jumps.Maximal Isometric strength was increased by 30,76% (DS), and 19,57% (SS), themaximum contractile force in 19,00% (DS) and 22,61% (SS), the eccentric power by25, 85% (DS) and 24,34% (SS), the two groups respectively.As for the kinematic characteristics we had no statistically significant changes,however, Improvements were also observed in the EMG activity of main agonists(rectus femoris, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius) muscles for maximal isometricforce, maximum isokinetic eccentric force and maximal isokinetic concentricstrength.
